Tyler Glenn: I Can Feel You Feel Forgetting Me

"You know as artists become more famous. Lies, and their experiences often become less relatable and I think we see that show up in their work and I. Bring that up because I think that things are singing about this new album are shockingly relatable and relevant to the people listening I have some specific examples but that's something that you think about or are concerned about. Take probably I always want to feel like I'm relating to the audience listening to it and to me I suppose I'm famous to some people and I I suppose my band is popular but I I still live like a very I dunno I some of it must have to only coming out a few years ago feeling like myself. So I feel like I'm still very much like I don't know. Does that make sense like just a person with a phone trying to navigate romance with APPs and like I I still just as much of that even though I have access to other things and maybe a platform I mean you bring up romance I think one of the things that like I struck me was about being ghosted and ghosting and I was like, Oh yeah I guess they must people do have. To deal with that as well. Yeah, and I also have seen the flip I've used ghosting to sort of get out of a thing. It's this weird thing that I'm exploring in my own life is the modern phenomenon and we were given all this power. Maybe I'm too happy about it but I think we're still in the middle of even understanding what that is and the power of that and how it. Affects our people and things like that. I feel like I've had one public relationship right after it came out I really wanted to work and I realized like still had so much inner stuff to work out an exit I sit here with you as a thirty six year old man and I'm like I don't know if I've ever really been in A. In a relationship that actually is healthy life is also public and also like rewarding the both of us it's interesting thing I'm still navigating as a as a guy. You know I think for me. It's been the last few years of just like why what is codependency like? Why am I feeling this way? Why might seeking someone so hard to fulfill me and it's like it's probably stuff that sounds very juvenile but from me I, there's aspects of things that I do feel you know I'm still having to experience myself. I mean I think you named check codependency on at least two different solid in. That's not a word of ever heard in pop music before lake. Yeah it's a running theme. It's repetitive lyric on purpose I. Think I not only with the person that I'm directly talking about his record but I think my own codependency with my devices, my own codependency with alcohol and drugs as as a Mormon kid growing up that was Jones in my head that that's not what you're supposed to do but you're also not supposed to be gay. And I knew I was gay. So now I'm I'm without labels. As an openly gay man also not subscribing to that fifth expression anymore. I feel like I'm not certain basic things. Does that make sense or are you saying because mormonism has so many? knows. You know you can't drink alcohol drink coffee. You can't smoke that. You're now late twenties early thirties like figuring your own relationship to alcohol and like everything I. Think. So I think it's even less about the no it's also the coupled with the idea that like. And I know mormonism is an exclusive religion that exclusively feels this way. But like it kind of combines this this greater existential crisis with drinking coffee for example, like the fact that you couple that with with sinning. So it's this weird. been this navigation of way I woke up hung over me and I'm an alcoholic I don't know I'm just figuring out maybe stuff you do in early twenties and get through it doesn't make sense. It makes sense and I have to wonder if that is something that everybody our age is feeling and thinking about it just looks more like a personnel cylinder light your life probably, and that's been the beauty of being out I've been out for six years, but I've only really been in my body as a gay man. Without the trappings of certain things for the last three or four years, it does make me feel less alone and made me feel like this is just an isolated experience when I when I see like people that have no relation to. The things that I grew up. Bonn are still like fumbling with and sort of figuring out I live in Salt Lake City now, and it's a very still like reminding of the Mormon Church but I, don't think about it all the time until I have to share myself from my story and. You know for better for worse. That's a big component of my. My Life is how that's affected me and me getting out of it and how that's affected me

"Were. You surprised that there would be a hundred billion dollar fund for this kind of end of days Scenario yes and no on the one hand. The number itself is unbelievably jarring especially with only sixteen million Mormons on the other hand. Mormons have been famous for a long time for sort of preparing for doomsday scenarios. The church for many years advised members to have at at least a year supply food year supply of water a year supply of fuel. Things like that. The church actually has an absolutely massive grain silo Kylo in Salt Lake City. And they say that none of this is for the second coming specifically but a lot of people including members of the Church continue to think that it is when you were sitting with these inside peak officials. Did you ask them about this theory. Yes yes we asked them and church officials said that this was was simply not the case that they did expect. Jesus Christ return at some point. But they didn't know when that would be they didn't know what that would look like. They didn't know financial assets would have any value at that point and that the money was about the work they wanted to do to build the church before then and not about preparing for for the second coming. Are they defensive offensive about that. I mean why would clerk say this privately to people. But he wouldn't say it to you. They were defensive about it and in fact search leaders are very sensitive about their beliefs about the second coming being misconstrued and when we asked about it in the interview their head of public relations interrupted US and admonished us to be respectful in the way that we write the story. So I have a follow up question for Mr With regards to the second coming. How would that work in terms of the investments that intend colds? How would you get assets investments if there was if second incoming were to happen? I hope you'll be respectful. Our faith in what we believe as Christians as Church of Jesus Christ latter-day Said's we are very respectful and we view the Savior's role in our lives is very important. So I just hope the nature of your questions as respectful of your dog is well they all affirm that they believe in the second coming that they believe. It'll happen at some point but that is absolutely not what the money is for so of all of the things that they spoke most clearly and emphatically on this was actually yet where they were denying. The second coming had anything to do with why they were putting this money away. Given these denials Ian and Rachel wanted to better understand the funds secrecy if this money is really for an economic downturn. Why haven't they talked publicly about it? After they they left a sit down interview with church officials. They caught Roger Clark in the lobby. He gave a different answer about why they've been so secret about the fund that that I think was very illuminating about their fear that if members knew how much money the church had they would think twice about tithing latter-day Saints believe that the point kind of tithing isn't necessarily to enrich the church that it's about showing your commitment to God and being willing to make a sacrifice and they believed that God will bless those who tie hi. I thought that was a very important point. And painting paying. tithing has more of a sense of commitment that it is pitcher needing the money so they never wanted to be in a position where people felt like You know they. They shouldn't make the contribution has the church didn't need it. Yeah so I think that may have played some part in during his trip to Salt Lake City in went to a church to ask congregants about this concern that they would stop tithing because of the size of the fund and it turns turns out. They didn't feel that way at all. Everyone I found there was very supportive of the church. They sort of said they were proud. That the church head managed the money so well and that members were successful and were able to tie them this way and they trusted church to continue to manage a responsibly and they would continue to tie ten percent themselves themselves and the fact that there was this huge pile of money didn't change that in any way other Mormons Ian spoke to didn't have a problem with the Fund in principle. But they wanted to see it. I used more immediately for charity. So one of the light spoke to his name Sam Brunson. He's a professor of tax law at Loyola University in Chicago. He's very active talking writing about issues in the church as well and so he said a hundred billion dollars is so much money that it could be used is to solve some major real world problem so for example he said they could put it towards helping radical malaria or they could put it towards fixing the electrical grid in Puerto Rico which was basically completely knocked out by the hurricane or alternatively he said they could just change the way that the church thinks about tithing what a number of people are saying. Is that the church already has so much money. And that tithing doesn't have to mean donating to the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day stance that it could mean donating donating to other charities that it could mean work and this is an idea that I've heard from a few people. Seems like news of this. Big Fund Fund is casting doubt for some Mormons about their tithing. which kind of makes you wonder? Why is there so much secrecy? Yeah and what does the Mormon Church standing gain from it. After having reported on this I am no closer to understanding than I was at the start. Art What is gained by being so secretive about this fund. A number of people I talked to members of the Church should've said if the church would just come out right and say openly. This is how much money we have. Then he actually wouldn't be such a big deal. It would cease to be this kind of subject of intrigue that it is now and and by continuing to not disclose what their holdings are. They've just made it this guessing but just how rich is the Mormon Church and the church in talking to us for the story has started to answer some of those questions but I don't think they have answered them to the satisfaction of all their members..

Mormon Church accused of stockpiling billions, avoiding taxes

"The church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints whose members are known as Mormons is facing allegations of financial fraud a former investment manager for the church has filed a complaint with the IRS he says the institution holds and misuses charitable contributions close to one hundred billion dollars we hail is reporting on the story from member station K. U. E. R. in Salt Lake City come morning Lee the morning before we get into the specific allegations this is a big deal because donations are very important to this church right yeah I mean the church's Chrysler the saints like most churches are a lot of churches I should say as for ten percent of all income of their members be paid in typing the interesting thing is that please most that money for facilities missions vingtaine work what's left over they invest and that's where David Nilsson comes in okay so who is David Nelson and what is he alleging so he's the whistleblower who filed the complaint to the IRS and he's a former employee of the church's nonprofit investment arm it's called ensign peak advisors and he says ensign peak would receive about a billion dollars of excess typing a year and over time and through some clearly successful investment strategy they ended up with a hundred billion dollars the church is not confirm that figure they don't have to by law but Nielsen argues that ensign peak this investment arm there how to complaints their tax exempt status because they receive this tithing money invested they haven't made any charitable donations from that money they have no no charitable contributions and so instead they've used it to bail out for profit companies the church also owns how are Mormons reacting to these allegations about misuse of money that they've donated yet when it comes to like typing members of the church I think most of them will likely agree with church leadership and the official response in the church has been that the vast majority of typing is used for the purpose of helping meeting the needs of the church and the church he's also said that the claim is being circulated are based on their perspective and limited information they need and defended their right to invest the money invoking the parable of the talents things the sound doctrine on financial principle taught by Jesus in the New Testament other members of the church had a different reaction they've referred to this as hoarding and they're really upset that this a hundred billion I'm for investments isn't being used in religious or humanitarian efforts what is the parable of the talents that you mentioned there basically Jesus is instructing these disciples to go and make basically magnify what they've been given you know to kind of grow what they've been given and basically that this is an example of them growing the the money they perceive investing yeah okay listen knows these claims to turn out to be true what are the consequences for the church potentially well I spoke with a law professor Sam Brunson Atleo Loyola University in Chicago who's an expert on this kind of stuff and he said that the whistle blower is correct that no money has gone to charity than this investment arm of the church risks losing its tax exempt status while but importantly he says that the church itself is not risk the church itself it is not at risk why well because they have the separate investment arm which caused the problem but it's also going to shield them from potential fallout Lee hell with member station K. we are thanks so much for your

Funerals held for women and children killed in Mexico ambush

"Funerals have begun for the nine American women and children killed in an ambush in Mexico about seventy miles south of the Arizona border Mexican government officials now believe the killers who opened fire on the families belong to lie Lena part of the plot is drug cartel shot down on it from the top we were they say the attackers entered the territory of the rival Sinaloa cartel Sunday near LaMotta where the extended live parent family lived all members of a breakaway group once associated with the Mormon church local police have been on high alert ever since the two cartels engaged in a gunbattle early Monday morning Mexican authorities believe the gunmen opened fire on the family's three S. U. V.'s hours later first mistaking them for cartel members and family members including Max LeBaron see the group was targeted there's no reason there's no logical reason behind the other than the fact that they're just terrorist organizations they point out that children traveling with twenty nine year old Christina Lange for Johnson say she raised her arms to show she was not a threat she got out of the vehicle she right to try to identify those women and children there and she got gunned down Mexican officials say the first S. U. V. was hit by bullets and explode around nine AM Monday two hours later the other two suburbans were ambushed about eleven miles down the road after that shooting all relative says thirteen year old Devon Lankford hit his siblings and bushes and went for help about six hours later he arrived in la Motta fourteen miles away and alerted family members his uncles were forced to wait for army reinforcements to arrive before they could set out to find the children in total eight children were rescued three are still recovering in an era zona hospital the Mexican president says he is open to the U. S. working alongside local authorities in this investigation and what will work as CBS news see that what is Mexico our Steve Futterman ease into son Steve is to sell the closest city with the medical facilities these kids needed or or was there a rush just to get them to the US well I think a bit of both Steve of that they have a an excellent medical facility here in fact the place where the the children were being treated as the same hospital that essentially save the life of congresswoman Gabby Giffords a few years ago can you explain a little bit more about the community these folks are from in Mexico and then their ties to the Mormons in the US well in the eighteen hundreds these were people who decided to leave Utah because when you talk became a state part of the agreement was that polygamy would be declared illegal uneasily the people who went to these northern Mexico enclaves if you will were people who wanted to continue the practice of polygamy it's it's a bit unclear do some people who are in these enclaves today still practice polygamy perhaps yes but if it is going on it's it's very few people most of the people here have basically traditional marriages but it's a very close tight knit area we always get a sense that the people who live in these areas preferred to be below the radar if you will they don't really like outsiders coming in that much but they have gone back and forth into the U. S. back in Mexico many of the people who live on these enclaves go back and forth many times throughout the year in fact some of the people who were killed were heading to the US can you give us any indication then of why a drug cartel would want to target why would they go after them we don't know perhaps the drug cartel fought the people inside the S. U. V.'s were part of a a rival drug cartel many authority rejecting that claim but it's certainly something that's being looked into CBS is the Fuhrman reporting from Tucson Arizona thanks Steve thank you

"The best examples for a need to tax searches and the Mormon church. Oh, god. Yeah. The Mormons they that's big business. The Mormon church. Definitely. And I think they've come out, you know multiple times with different. I mean, from prop eight in California to most recently with the medical marijuana and Utah. They definitely just seem like a big business overall more so than a church in it's shown through their like their changes in policy from the recent changes with. Allowing gay children to be baptized, too. You know, the black being allowed to have the priesthood back in the seventies. So is that a public relations gig? Is it a marketing demographic thing that they're doing you think I think it is? Because they I know they recently announced that they were hoping to get it and digital who's at thirty thousand missionaries, I believe number may be a little bit off. But then they I know those numbers never came to when they lowered the age of being allowed to start at eighteen. So I think they're just seeing those numbers dwindle, pretty rapidly. And so they're just trying to kind of stay with the times a little bit better. Yeah. I was talking to David FitzGerald about evolution and the evolution of religions. And he's like, if you wanna see proof of evolution just look at Christianity. Right. It'd be we see in a religion that has had to adjust and Volve and widen and alter and morph and change to stay relevant based on the culture that it's in. And so when you. You have a more accepting culture gradually stepping in that direction. How does the church day relevant? Well, they'll be few fundamentalists, who bunker down in the rest of the churches are going to say, hey, wait a minute in order to stay relevant. We're going to have to appeal to the culture that we live in. So it becomes sort of a marketing ploy. Absolutely. I mean, I know when I was growing up to even drink a mountain dew would be the one to biggest seems I could ever commit. But they've even relaxed their scans on that. So they had a ban on mountain dew a new there was coffee. Oh, I see it was caffeine in general, and now cold drinks are okay suddenly, but if you warm up the caffeine, suddenly, the same car coming in with the devil. How did you live without caffeine? It's just no wonder you left, no wonder you left. And I think because coffee is kind of an acquired taste, so like he at first, like I was gross to me, and so it took a little time to even get used to that. But, but now you partake you imbibe you I definitely I definitely fall under that Jack Mormon. And I just wanted to say real quick, I was a navy veteran. And I think where they come at is that they assume that you already believe in God, and that's what I kinda saw with a lot of the people that I didn't Iraq with it was like, oh, well, what's your or you go into? And it was just like kinda -ssume that you already a Christian or whatever religion you are in. And so, like the prayers that would be, you know, kinda just a basic nondenominational prayers and stuff like that it was just kind of like an accepted, part of the culture, I believe, well. I appreciate you calling into the show. Take it easy. There was a statement released by the Mormon church in twenty eighteen talking about its own financial management. Where does the money come from? This was posted at Mormon news room dot org. And they say that, well, a lot of their church work is funded my tithing from the church members. Well, that's partially. True. They also say this is a quote, a small portion of funds comments from businesses maintained by the church. Now anyone familiar with the Mormon church knows that they have their fingers in a whole bunch of corporate pies. Okay. Or business related buys the church admits that on top of the tithes they have stocks and bonds taxable, businesses agricultural interests, and commercial and residential property there in the real estate business. Well, mormonleaks is a Wiki page..

For instance, e include you in his future. I will never forget that Ben. And I were hanging out. I think it was like the third time we had hung out. And he said to me something we plan to date for some time. That was like months he planned today for like months. It was a cooking class, and I thought oh, wow. And it was he initiated it. He set it up. He wanted to do it. And it was like, I think we started dating in January. And I think that it was like, April or men, very good. Okay. Okay. This is different right? I did something similar when I met Kelly. I had planned our wedding date. Later, tell her different like. Sign that your man is falling in love with you. He lets you know that he's developing deep feelings for you. Think it's a sign of maturity, right? If you're a motionlessly giving, yes. And not lying can say it, right? Men are like that's cheesy saying that. I think a lot of men lie about how cheese the are. Especially the beginning. They don't tell their friends the cheesy stuff they do. Sure. "Welcome back to America in the morning, thirteen till a Bill introduced in the Utah state legislature seeks to allow a church or any nonprofit organization to apologize for sex abuse without liability. Jim Roope reports. The Bill is introduced in the midst of a Mormon church sex abuse scandal by state Representative Ken ivory, who says the legislation would enable the church to reach out to the victims to apologize to minister to to aid the victims without that being considered any type of basis of liability that seems odd to me attorney Craig Vernon represents sex abuse victims of both the Catholic and the Mormon church and points out the sex abuse is not unique to the Catholic church. There is a big problem with sexual abuse in the Mormon church, and this is a longer discussion we probably longer than we have today. And it's part of it is because of the control that the church has over its members. Based on you know, it's it's doctrine and things of that nature, and the fact that the culture of and the policy of the Mormon church teaches its leaders to deal with things internally which means most times they deal with this as a matter of sin and not as a crime. "Biggest good advertising forum with michael was having his car service here when he learned of the mural he liked the artwork but was disappointed it's being painted by a robot instead of a human neurologist you know you hear about it on the news and radio every day that they're developing the sort of thing so it's not too big of a shock but young say kim cfo of viborg says they are not trying to take smaller jobs away from artists we take a much larger project and much more complex pictures they need to be done cost effectively and a much shorter period of time he says the robot can paint a mural in just a few days and for half the cost of what a human would charge in san jose matt bigler kcbs got family of eagles co founder glen fry keeping his legacy alive and resilient way after he died in two thousand sixteen at the age of sixty seven his twenty four year old son deacon has been filling his father's shoes on the road with the eagles and taylor franklin sister is working as road manager group next performs tomorrow and vancouver canada cindy fry his widow and executive is a state admits the first few shows of the tour were rough but she also says it helped them through their grief and it brought them closer kcbs news time one forty three reporter's notebook this is vicki barker after more than a century as partners the mormon church says it will sever all ties with the boy scouts by the end of the year the church of jesus christ of latter day saints had already pulled nearly two hundred thousand teenage boys out of the scout movement last year now it's leaders say to four hundred thousand remain in will go to the scouts decisions to allow gay troop leaders and to admit girls apparently incompatible with mormon teachings so the church is starting its own gospel based organization scouting has always been huge among mormons and this divorce will deprive the boy scouts of nearly twenty percent of.

"Yeah i mean you know or or is that radical islam i mean but i guess in the mormon church in the more fundamentalist i can totally see it happening so she is having to make a choice between man a or man be that the irish at least endorses that's right okay yeah because as to be a good mormon has to be good moment marriage sort of our i soundtrack go ahead in in the end i i don't know whether i convinced her or i just kind of knew was right pushed in that direction that she decided to to go with the guy who was and your remain in canada's essentially and stay scalding of number and so she laughed to go basically shakeup up the guy and then you know as the process goes to get married tune eventually so she goes off and she's living with the guy can't imagine the mormon church would approve of that but that's probably had a digression i believe the marriage took place fairly quickly aththawra she had mark located sister she chooses the canadian guy she goes off and they get married aand then what i ended up losing my job adt she knew what was going on so we were kind close on that end she said okay well look you're having some problems i can see you know you lost it up now and you've got nowhere to live why don't you come come with us to grant of remove what we've got space without house without x the room great ice on swu scholar problems he's i bought so i did that i made the break a guy did what it could to move out tackle bowman lungs and get up to northern alberta so you move into a fundamentalist mormon culture essentially cul culture yards i really didn't know what i'm saying myself up for so wait they weren't just offering you were room did they set requirements on you that you had to participate not initially that's to think not right away it's like they were sniffing out debt vulnerability and just waiting for the right moment to strike to say okay will will always have problems will slow clay.
