CDC says fully vaccinated people can gather indoors without masks
"Got mortgaged news on vaccinations and on CDC guidance earlier today. Doctor to net. Nash Watt are Fox News colleague joined us in the first hour to discuss the implications of what we're learning here is part of that conversation. If you could just walk us through what you heard this morning. What the big takeaways are what the implications are for people. He got so guys, This is really incredible news, and I'm just really excited. Ecstatic about it, because what this tells us it symbolizes that the end is here. It symbolizes that we have control and it gives us social premiums and gives us a taste of them of feet. And when you provide clear and realistic guidance to Americans, that's gonna increase compliance, and it's really going to get a Further where we need to be faster. So I think this is an important, very important step that has been long awaited, and it makes sense that with the first group that she mentioned a beautifully vaccinated and your mom and your parents, your neighbors fully vaccinated. It's okay to be around them indoors in a small group without a mask, But just use your common sense if you're vaccinated and you're around other people. You are not, and they're at high risk. You might want to just be careful where your mask Until that person who is high risk is able to get their vaccine because it's your high risk in the first place. They should be vaccinated. So I know it's a little bit cumbersome, but it's just a matter of time. Remember, by the end of May, everyone is gonna have according to president right and everyone is going to have access to the vaccine on. But this is really very hopeful. Good news. Because we're almost there. We're at the home stretch and it's It's a point to take these these steps because, remember, the vaccine is not 100% effective. Right, but it's I mean, it's awfully close, right? And so you start adding up these numbers, you say Okay, well, because this is one of the things that Doubters will bring up. Well, it's not 100% effective. Well, that's true of almost every vaccine ever. Right. It's it's about managing expectations and managing risk. And we have a disease that is, you know, 99 plus percent survival rate if you get it. Then, if you have most people with vaccines that are between let's say 86 94% effective. The math just gets so much better for society as a whole, and we're back to something close to a normal risk scenario where we've all been living our lives under that type of rest scenario. For years and years. Right, so the vector after the vaccinated, plus vaccinated person, right, So if you've got a small group of people, everyone's been vaccinated. You all can get together in. The CDC is saying it again. This is a recommendation. They don't actually Set policy that doesn't have, you know legal weight, But their recommendation based on what they say is the best science is and that first part, I think is just totally common sense toe toe Average people. If you've got a group of folks who've all been vaccinated, Of course, they should be able to hang out indoors outdoors wherever they want to be. Without masks without social distancing, because they're all safe themselves, and they're safe from each other. The one where I guess it is a little bit. Mork confusing. And if you could just maybe parse out some of this guide us a little bit, doctor. It is the permission that they're giving, or at least in their recommendations. That people who are vaccinated can safely gather with unvaccinated people as well. Talking about vaccinated grand parents and their unvaccinated, you know, families or grandkids, or, you know groups of friends and they're saying be careful. It kind of depends on who the unvaccinated people are. But we're not saying that it is unsafe. For vaccinated people to hang out Now indoors. No, masking know, distancing with some unvaccinated. Others Just spell that a little bit more further. A little bit further for us, please. Yes, that's correct and going back to the first one. Where if you're fully vaccinated, That means you have to be two weeks out from your second dose or two weeks out from the Johnson Johnson because I got to tell you guys this past weekend I had a lot of positive covert patients, and many of them had only had their first dose. Even other symptoms were very mild. So you want to make sure that it's both doses and infinitely two weeks after Second does now when it comes to not wearing your mask. If you're living in the same household with others who are not vaccinated, it is a caveat is those who are not vaccinated in that trustful. They are how rich you might want to take precautions. If they have COPD or diabetes or heart disease. You might want to take precautions. And the thing is, if you're mixing more than one household member, if you're increasing the size of the gathering You're increasing the risk of possible transmission. That's when they're that's when they say. If there's more than one household that you're mixing with, then you might want to consider where in your mask, and they also still recommend everyone avoid medium to large indoor gathering. But if you can't do that, where your mask social distance again Just get more American vaccinated. We have about 9.2%, who are fully backstage about 30 million Americans, which in my opinion is really good at that, with people who are naturally infected. We're almost that, you know. Herd immunity. I really do think we're getting there. So the key is the mixing of the household. If it's more than one helpful on Duren, the harvest situation, maybe having AH co morbidity is common sense. Protect yourself. It's not hard to wear that mask. And to me, it kind of feels like a headline. If you want to boil it down. This does not apply to every single case, but it's like, Hey, Grandma and Grandpa. You're vaccinated. You're fully vaccinated. Go hug your grandkids. It is safe, right and like that, is that such a wonderful thing to see And it's it's just way all knew. That moment was coming in for a lot of people. It's now been here because we've had people getting vaccinated. Out for weeks and months. But to have it now be sort of the broad recommendation of the CDC. That is very exciting. The data among seniors 65 especially 75, plus Thing. Definitely to sort of herd immunity. If you will that level of inoculation among older populations, who are overwhelmingly the most likely to get very seriously ill or die from this disease. We're doing a great job prioritizing those people in a very high percentage. Super super majority of seniors in America are now vaccinated in that number continues to grow. Every day.
Senior Status for Judges Explained
"Judges have announced they will take senior status or retire since the election. Adding to about 50 federal judicial vacancies that existed before the election. With a narrow democratic majority in the Senate and no 60 vote threshold for judicial nominees, Biden has an opportunity to make an impact on the court's starting with the second circuit, which it now appears he can flip back to a Democratic appointed majority. Joining me is Professor called to bias of the University of Richmond Law School. Carl tell us what senior status means for judges and who's taking it well. Senior status is a form of semi retirement when judges satisfied the rule of 80. When they're 65 15 years of experience. They can take that status. They usually have a half caseload. On. Do they continue to receive the cola's that all federal judges have? And so it's a great opportunity for the judges. Because you retain their experience. But the court then gets another active judge. And so that's extremely valuable and brings new people into the system and gives the courts more resource is which many of them need. The most recent one is Judge Peter Hall on the second Circuit. Who last Thursday soon senior status. And so that's important because he's the third judge on that court. Assume senior status and means that they'll be Mork people on the court appointed by Democratic presidents than Republican president Want Judge Hall is replaced by by pointy so fighting has an opportunity to flip the court back to a democratically appointed majority, which Trump was able to flip during his time.

"A vast dot com You're listening to KCRW. This is morning Edition. The federal government and the state of California are struggling to figure out how to get Mork opened vaccines into people's arms faster. Pretty much everyone agrees that health care workers should get top priority. But the sticky question is who should come next? And that debate is heating up in California after the state announced this week, it's shifting its priorities and will focus more on older Californians rather than essential workers. Dr. Michael Wilkes is a professor of medicine and global health at UC Davis. We asked him what are the issues on the table here? The issue is we just don't have enough vaccines right now for everyone, so we're gonna have to make some tough choices. We need to ask ourselves what is the goal of our vaccination program, and there are two sides of that coin. Should the country's vaccine programs focus at least early on on the elderly and people with serious medical conditions there the people, most it risk for dying of the virus, or do we focus on essential workers encompassing Americans who have borne the greatest risk of infection? These people are also at the highest risk of passing the virus on to others. Either through their work or at home. So ultimately the choice comes down to whether preventing death or curbing the spread of the virus and returning to some sort of semblance of normalcy. Which of those is the highest priority? That's a very difficult choice. Would the vaccine had the same impact on both groups? Would it saved the same number of lives? Vaccine given to somebody older than 75 is 370 times more likely to save a life than a vaccine given to somebody younger than 50, So that's a pretty stark difference. If our goal is to maximize the preservation of life, we should go with older Americans. But if our goal is to reduce the rate of infection, we should prioritize essential workers now essential workers has become an enormous category. In fact, depending on whose definition you use, almost three quarters of the American workforce are considered essential. Firefighters, fast food workers, sewage workers, exterminators, painters. When a group like this essential workers becomes too big. It defeats the purpose of strategically prioritizing them as a group for vaccines. Then we have issues of disparities. Some groups of workers like teachers are mostly middle class and have college degrees. So some policy makers argue that if the goal is to reduce disparities Workers like teachers should not be in the queue. I should say that's not my take. Teachers are needed to keep kids healthy. So the kids don't fall further behind in their school work, and kids need to go to school, so their parents Can go back to work. Meanwhile, some people are still trying to find ways to cut the line and jump ahead of others to get the vaccine, right. You know, this is crazy. Some stars and politicians all over the country say they should go first, and they use that They're setting an example. Others feel that they're just more important. But I know of no studies that show that the public is more likely to get vaccinated because movie stars or politicians did so first and Cutting the lead. The line leads to complete breakdown in the public support for rules. The system becomes a joke, and those who are always at the end of the line will again be at the end of the line, whether they need it more. Or not. What about the serious allergic reactions we've heard about? You know, like that handful in San Diego. At this point, there have been more than 23 Million vaccinations administered. Are allergic reactions, a seriously issue. That's a great question. I mean, we have now a bunch of data. So as of this week, it seems that there's only been 29 Americans who've developed a severe allergic reaction to the cove. It vaccine and 75% of those people were within the 1st 15 minutes after the administration. That comes out to be about six serious reactions for every one million vaccines by comparison, according to the CDC data, the risk of serious reactions to say the flu vaccine is one per million, so it's definitely higher but the disease cove, it is also far more deadly than the flu. Certainly, as the days and weeks rolled by will have more complete understanding of this, But allergic reactions are exceedingly rare, and people should feel safe getting the vaccine. As the number of people who get the vaccine increases. Some folks are asking. Hey, can I take off my mask and go back to living my life? The way I used to? Is that safe? It doesn't make sense from a health perspective. It doesn't at least not for now of the studies that have been done. Don't tell us if people who have been vaccinated with two doses can still pass along the infection to others, even if they have no symptoms. Also remember, there are these new genetic mutations we're hearing about. We have very little data on how effective the vaccine will protect us against these new variants. So Unfortunately, I think we still on Lee to wear masks, socially distance and avoid crowds. Dr Michael Wilkes is a professor of medicine and global health at U. C. Davis. They will not allow a week to be interrupted. They may move a game. They're willing to move a game and when everybody's on board with that, and I'm talking about the players on either side on any side because they want to play The thought of cancelling a game and not having account is not part of the NFL DNA, no matter what Kobe 19 does to a player or 18 in the NFL. The NFL is not stupid. You can say whatever you want about Roger Goodell's again NFL commissioner, but he knows exactly what his lane is all about. He knows exactly what the NFL's lane is all about.
