"Welcome to nobody told me I'm Jan Black and I'm Laura Owens and we're really excited about our next guest, Amy Morin, she's a psychotherapist and the author of thirteen things mentally strong people don't to an international bestselling book that's being translated into more than twenty five languages as well as thirteen things. Mentally strong parents don't do or Ted Talk. The secret of becoming mentally strong has more than six million views. She's also a columnist for Ink Forbes Today welcome to the showing me. Well thanks for having me. It'd be. There's a fascinating story about how your first book thirteen things mentally strong people don't do came about tell us about that. I saw it was a Serapis to and I, had thought my goal in life was just going to be about teaching other people to be mentally strong. But I went through a series of losses in my life. My mother passed away suddenly from a brain aneurysm when I was twenty three. And then on the three year anniversary of her death, my twenty, six year old husband died of a heart attack Oh my God and yeah and so at some point, my journey was mental strength really became personal figured out. Okay. It's not just about other people. These skills I also need to practice them in my own life. And Terrell seeing people in my therapy office over the years I figured out sometimes. Wasn't always about what people did but sometimes, it was more about what they didn't do. And so I practice not just developing good habits but getting rid of bad habits that would keep me stuck. And then a few years down the road I was fortunate to find love. Again, I got remarried and life was looking good and my father-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer. And to get through that we were dealing. But we knew was about to happen the doctors gave him a few weeks to a couple of months left to live. I wrote myself a list of all the things mentally strong people don't do and it was a way to remind myself not to do these certain things so that I could stay strong as possible and published it to the Web thinking maybe it help somebody else but it was read by more than fifteen million people. and. So then I was fortunate to be been be able to go on and write the book and sort of explained the backstory because when the list came out, it was pretty much just the list nobody knew why wrote it? They thought I wrote it because I had mastered it not because I struggled with it and so just a few days after my father-in-law passed away I was on national TV talking about mental strength but. Nobody really knew the backstory. So I was thrilled to be able to write the book and explain, Hey, we all struggle with these things and but giving them up can help you to become stronger and you're on top of those issues. You can be aware of them and figure out how do I give up these bad habits that I can be the best version of myself and how did you come up with a thirteen things? They were all things that You know he'd seen again in therapy office I thought okay. When people don't do these things like when they don't feel sorry for themselves, the seem to bounce back better and some people had been through lots of really tough things in their life and..

It's been up to them to raise a lot of the money themselves to conduct a lot of the investigations themselves and. You know to do the hard work of bringing awareness of the case Krista and all of Ashley's family has worked very hard to bring awareness and we're just trying to help them with that. If you don't know who I am on the host of a totally different podcast and the podcast this feat is on but. I felt that this message was important enough to contact fellow podcasters to pass this story on the reality is. The time to recover. Ashley, and bring her home is running short and we need government to step in and government to help the family bring Ashley home whether that means people coming in and providing tips to the people investigating or pressuring the government to provide resources or equipment to help find her. "The skyline studios on the phone with us a psychotherapist Amy Morin let's talk about relationships it's interesting during the self quarantine no one thought that we'd be spending twenty four seven with our spouses so here we are we're all thinking the same thing oh my gosh I'm running out of things to say or my spouse is super mad at me where am I gonna go I can't really go anywhere right I'm trying to make you a letter saying you know we're getting on each other's nerves are both trying to work from home and my house is so loud over I just can't find any time to myself where can people are singing I'm so lonely other people are saying I can't get five minutes of peace and quiet and lots of love just bickering over small things the dirty dishes in the sink or they find themselves arguing about what to watch on TV and it makes sense we've been together a long time and and there's not a lot of outlets that we have to rely on anymore so it makes sense that people are getting on each other's nerves oh my god the dumb fights that we've had at our house I'm sure people are going to use the dishes were one of bomb taking out the garbage why are we taking it out so much how come we're doing so much laundry right now yeah we're going through that yeah and I think you're right in the same place where so many couples are right now is in specially the ones I have kids at home suddenly who are out of school the whole family's home all day long every day and they don't have a lot of there the activities and things that they're used to doing it's just crazy so what do we DO help couples everywhere that are listening right now Amy one thing is you know we tend to look at what should my partner be doing differently to make my life better we can't control what our partner doesn't can only control we have a question to ask yourself in the home are you doing what could I do differently how can I be a better partner right now rather than trying to focus on what your style should change well why is she so loud on zoom that's what I understand can you close the door put on headphones why it's so difficult have those conversations about you know it's it's tough for me when you're really loud on June but you just want to make sure that you're doing it now in a polite and respectful way obviously when they're frustrated the words don't tend to come out it's kind of we just you know yell from the other room it's a quieter I'll be knocking condescending his want to have those conversations that you want to do in a polite manner right so how do we get there how do we look at ourselves what should we do as individuals if you woke up every day and you thought well what am I grateful for about my partner I can put you in my right mind sets instead of thinking of all the things you're doing wrong right now which is figure out what are some things you appreciate about them and then ask yourself what that was something I can do today to be the best partner I can recognize I partners going through a tough time just like I am so my job is to be the best partner that I can't how might argue that what might that look like what am I going to do today and if at the end of the day you check in with yourself and just thought how did I do today what could I do better tomorrow I guarantee it'll make a huge difference in your relationship I we just got a text message what's the best way to deal with the break up in the middle of a pandemic and going back to living alone that's a great question you know hearing from a lot of people about break ups are people who are long my gosh in quarantine to somebody and I'm pretty sure we're not gonna make it through this so I have to Oakland so I think you know obviously the whole world is weird right now Intel eight your life is weird if you're going to go through a breakup and things are gonna be different afterwards so think about finding that balance of letting yourself go through grief and all of the top of motions that come with the break up but not letting yourself get stuck there they recognize god's money I'm so sad I can't have I don't even want to leave the house you want to fill out your name just so angry that in certain check out my frustration on other people and to really just take a look at how what do I need to do to cope better in and take care of my emotions we beat ourselves up because we feel like failures only oh absolutely absolutely and sometimes we're just angry wanna blame other people for the problems are going to blame our partner or when the state of the world on why relationship didn't work on the emotions coming up for people right now along those lines well there's people that are listening they are beating themselves up and then they you know it's a slippery slope then you get depressed and then you're anxious how do we not beat ourselves up what can we do the first is to recognize when you engage in toxic self blame it's definitely not helpful to you or anybody else and one of the things is to look at when you do make a mistake do you think I'm a I'm I made a bad choice I'm a bad person and that shift in mindset makes all the difference in the world after all who's going to make a better choice next time the person that thinks that they may have made a mistake that just made it meant they made a bad choice of the person who thinks I'm a bad person you think I'm a bad person you think you're not capable of doing any better and I guarantee you'll keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again oh my gosh yeah you're probably right about the tough conversations people have to have with their spouse right now about money maybe moving or you know those of life conversations that they're trying to put off but they're gonna have to have how do they how do they do that how do they get to step one I think interesting analogy this is going to be tough but it doesn't mean I shouldn't do it just to have this conversation because I think so often we think of doing that ID provoking I can't do it and we put it off in the longer you put off the harder it becomes and to know that just because you're upset doesn't mean you shouldn't have the conversation or just because you're sad or just because it might upset your spouse doesn't mean you shouldn't do it that a lot of us need to have those tough conversations right now and you can give yourself a little pep talk a ticket take a deep breath and do it and I think he sometimes is to minimize our sounds fields of course about the instance you know gosh that's horrible that we have to move over there can be terrible that we can't afford to keep some of our things but on this day it's not a big deal you'll get over it what makes people feel worse you just want to know and yes this is a hard I totally get it even if you aren't in the same boat where you don't feel as bad about something not wrong that your spouse does it is validating somebody's feelings goes a really long way to helping them feel better sometimes when couples get together and they have these tough conversations they start getting into an argument right away and I think that's a self defense mechanism where they don't have to get in the Argus are the a conversation because the argument starts and then the real conversation stops is that true oh absolutely right if you can deflected if you can start arguing about something you can bring up will you always do this are you never do that in the we bring up old times in past hurts and then eight gives us another excuse to delay it and then we think we shouldn't talk about that subject as we argue too much then you can you delay it and try to convince yourself you don't need to address that oh boy yeah and now a lot of couples keep score two well I did this you need to do that right which never goes well because the truth is you know we always think that we deserve better or that the other person could have done more and when we keep score just hi Leslie come better angry and resentful and creates all sorts of most definitely not helpful in the end a bitter angry resentful that's one of my old girlfriends from college I'm glad you brought that is I mean it's it's a tough time right now it really is and we're just looking for answers in thank you so much for coming on and stress we all need help we do absolutely there's no shame in talking to somebody are reaching out for help to help you manage this difficult time right now and one of the things that I do and maybe it'll help other people is I write a list for everything I have paper in my car a paper on my night stand I have tons of lists right now in the studio I just make a list of everything I'm a list guy in if I have to have a tough conversation with my wife's there I'll do use bullet points just to make sure that I don't waver from the original content I think that is so wise because it gives us more of a way to be objective so often we want to bring up all of our emotions hello there eight hundred reasons why we're bringing something up rather than just sticking to the facts and sometimes you can just take this actually I feel this way here's the reasons why but you don't necessarily need to to bring up you know a thousand reasons other reasons why you don't need to justify a lot of things we try to do that sometimes when there are emotions get high and one of the things during self quarantine is these text messages when you send a text message the other person doesn't see your emotions or if you're joking in some way or if your wording something differently but they read it differently text messages are the worst if you're trying to get a point across you need to pick up the phone actually call someone so they can hear your voice right we do the silly things very type of smiley faces after paying you know when the text messages to try to make it clear you know I'm not mad at you or something like that and I think sometimes we come across as condescending and things get misinterpreted so absolutely have conversations face to face or over the phone when you can I feel like this is a therapy session for me Amy you're the best thank you for coming on thanks for having me all right that is anymore and psychotherapist and one of the greatest things that she said.

"Today's Morin of the day is really going to start your Monday because today is Monday by the way even though it feels like Tuesday's because every day is Tuesday now today's Monday and this is going to start your day and kick your week off. You're gonNA feel so good. It is horrible. It is precious. It happened in Philadelphia and that is the first time anyone has ever described anything that comes out. The Philadelphia is adorable impression. But a woman named Preston Bagnall was at home with her family. Quarantine minding their own business and they have a sliding glass door that looks out into their yard and something caught her eye and she looked and sitting on the other side of her sliding glass door was an actual groundhog clutching a piece of pizza in. Its tiny little pause staring in at the family and eating pizza so the woman did a double take. You don't see a pizza eating groundhog your backyard. Every day and the groundhog stayed for more than an hour eating pizza and watching the family. They have two dogs. Groundhog didn't care ground. Dogs were on the other side of the glass. She rolled video on it and pizza. Groundhog has become the quarantine symbol of hope that the city of brotherly love the need it and we have the video and it is precious. I mean looks like punks. Have Tony Phil Eating? A piece of an honestly. I don't think that's frozen pizza. That looks pretty artisanal. I got I got to tell you these days. Depending on what day of the week is might fight that hard for that piece of listen you see the pizza. It looked good gonNA fight that hog

Dude you reminded me of when I went to my first taping of unbeatable. And you did some sort of trip behind the couch or out the door out the bar. I did a lot of trips out of the Bar And it was like an topless step up a couple of steps and I remember like them wanting to do a rehearsal. And you're like no let's just like do it and I was like and it was like it was very Chevy Chase s who. I feel like being of pratfall that John Ritter as well. That looks so real right there. That was real. I was just trying to see the view and then I'd tipped over. Yeah I feel so fat to at least in and out for the first time in a while it was a baby and he's got a treat your breathing now I'd Chick-fil-a for the first time in a while a couple of weeks ago and that was one of those again like Oh yeah like I feel what a great choice me. Yeah and then ten minutes air like I guess. I'M GONNA get a new pillow sweating. You should see it yourself after you eat chick fillet last time you were here. We didn't have this backdrop. No you didn't have like a doing an interview on fuck and you know something funny inserted joke. Never give up on Improv. I promise yeah. It's a good Goto. I did a few times on stage. Rows like trying to buy their. There's nothing worse than trying to handle a heckler and then just coming up short with. Oh yeah a slam and then you dislike. It's said that once I was like. Oh it's going to be my Go-to to get some laugh and to quickly gather moment where it was like. Oh Yeah and then and that. So cert- well it sounds like the you you definitely have had a couple And you need to walk boy up and then he just kinda laughed if they don't laugh at like this stuff. Maybe you should get better. I say one of my brain stops just go. You know and insert something funny. I just say it's completely run out of exactly what I want to say. And sometimes it leaves us. You forget everything do I i. It's I was just talking to some of the other day about how much we talk just for like now. I mean the lines then pod robin role. What six episodes deep eight today? Wow what psych. Tough man yeah. It's a lot of work right. It's like an actual job. You've crushed Schwarzen- me the LIA Sonal I just Great and what is it exactly Jason Collins Utah? Gas called the other line standing. We have guests like you've had carry roads from the WHO is an NFL player. But then we started doing solo. Wants to like thing. I call Sunday Brunch for Monday's. Yes where it's like just eleven. Am My house. We do like just me Jason. And this kid will who's a producer odors. Yeah and that's actually really enjoyable. You're gonNA find the data actually GonNa be more fun and I think a good way to local Bratton. I started doing it. It was like it was just I and we were like okay. Let's get people on board with that. Yeah and you know. Look having guests on helps. Numbers helps get people interested. You have access to people that a lot of pods like. I'm sure when De quade comes on. I know. He said he would he will. It's just about timing. A guy like to call them decoyed Dennis Quaid for the people the Dole Queue. I'll never I'll never experienced a cooler moment than seeing Dennis. Quaid walk into the comedy store. Look and say to Brent Mourners. And here's like you an inner space And and a lot of other of my favorite movies and then to walk in him give Brenna Hug and then sit down the back and just belly laugh at Brent and never seen the new stand up now I find after and had texted you yet. I would throw it out to him like because we're doing that show together. I was like you WanNa come by the comedy store. Feel free. And he's like and I gave them The Times. He never texted back and just showed up so I didn't even know that he was gonNA come. Just let man style. Dennis Quaid is looking for you and I went down. Jesus really got real nervous because you WANNA BE WANNA be cool front of that guy doesn't need now and then he said declared. I didn't know if you're talking about D. Wade or that that Australian little person who got bullied because his name's kwaidan Clayton. Yeah there's a decoy. To as what is that. Yeah Yeah what do you see that? Yeah you hear about this. Yeah we talked about that on the podcast. Jason we're talking about Brad didn't great it wasn't then we're also talking because such an acting humanity is to pull the rug out from. He's a faker eighteen or something like that. It's really tricky to talk about anything without getting blog written about you so try to stay away from things. Although we didn't although we were on the podcast we even look it up again. He is nine right. Yeah so why? Do People Do Shit like well? Here's the thing I've been texting with Brad even like Sam. Tripoli asked me last night the store that like so. What's going on with Brad in that thing and I'm like am I the in two door community and Fahim goes you put in your time. You tend to go. And why have been texting with them? Because I'm also genuinely curious and I'm like oh I have a direct line. Let me see what's going on. And he Right out of the gate. We just kind of celebrating what he did and what happened and what the next move was and how much money like when I do. I can't believe like thirty thousand dollars. And then Lily when I texted Matt and he responded he goes. It's now over one seventy. I'm Mike what's crazy yet. Because they're trying to reach ten grand right. Yeah and then but then he you know the thing is a lot of those people that were kind of the videos that were popping up. One was like world star hip hop and was him with like like trying to be a rapper with money. But I'M GONNA do my five year. Old Nephew takes after my brother-in-law and pretend to wrap so that Demi wasn't like a defining he's eighteen and knows how to wrap like somebody was like you said the N. Word on Mike. Okay well like Lewan out of whatever when I was nine but I'm saying his mom also seems very somebody put it kind of like you know. Just you know not about not. I mean the fact that she taped him. I don't know how many times he got bolt like that happened before she was like fuck it. The world needs to see this if they had asked for cash and been like look. What's going on like focus back? Make this right send money make it make him you know. Give them experience. It's the opposite of this. Then maybe you could be part of me. Also want to be like. Maybe Brad's in cahoots with this kid. You know they're trying to split and they're going to put the money you know that's the ideal scenario but it cash grab. Yeah but no brad was like no. It's they're actively investigating because they've been talking with Ellen and an Ellen's P people were trying to be like because they don't want to have Was it moves on their face. What's the what's the the Metaphor Shit no egg on your face? Yeah Yeah what did I say? He's also is like hair. Mousse I think in actual Moose Disneyworld to place going to send a little person to honest. Jason talked about that. We COME SMOOTH BALI. The hardest thing he has a great relationship with Brad as well. Fuck Brad all the time. It's like you do. Brad get you know because you know you're joking cares of course but that is a great thing to for small. Where he he makes you feel comfortable about. Yeah he's He. He goes out of his way to make you like making the I joke self deprecating. It's truly a brilliant but at the same token I think sometimes people that don't have the report that they need to have to be able to throw back. I've seen people I've seen him make them comfy. And then being like so like are all midgets is cool. That met him sick for six minutes. But he makes you feel so. So what a J. Thiessen because it's I was laughing at too because he was trying to speak about it because we were talking a prior to that even if it was fake. Which it's not. It's still a good thing to promote for anti bullying so there's no way eighteen or nine that this kid wasn't bullied in his life eighteen and he like any cried for getting bullied. I'd be like came in a couple of weeks ago. I cried from a bank commercial but it was like it wasn't bowling but the same thing like your emotions are still very fragile and eighteen is still a very and he's not but and also even if they had even if he was. This is what I was trying to like. You know Compartmentalize IF HE's eighteen or. I'm sorry if he's an actor still but not eighteen arm. Sorry if he's eighteen and an accident when he got on your face if he's if he's if he's an actor and that video was still the real which I think it was because the it just you know you can just we all have our instincts in our perception levels at at an observation Skill sets at a high level being in the acting. Stand up world right. You're you have these very Dialed in connections to like the human behavior. So I'm watching Video Mike. This is no way this kid is acting this and then I have to meet that halfway and go okay fucking Tom. Hanks pretended to be forrest. Gump you know what I'm saying..

"It's me trying to changes mind. Will he's trying to get rid of me. So it becomes part of that so it under I understandably we now know why they were really hesitant of giving me the lead movies. Yeah But one of the things they were trying to figure out is like is there or anything. Because my natural New England fucking sarcasm as I come off sarcastic nerve. Is there anything with him. Being sweet and my age and Rachel I sit any unbeatable clip. That's all I said. He'd asshole so the clips they sent. Bridget was in them and they couldn't find a love interest. Never like what about her will and it was. Aaron Kaplan our producer. who was like? Well she's at MIT. She's not acting right now which she still Liz and he goes. I'll deal with it. And that's what. He does a convinced her. And then she tweeted. Thank you Brent. But really thank you bridget rigid wow and the like what is she studying a mit. What what what what kind of advancements in human evolution are you stopping from happening getting her out of MIT yeah? It's it's something that sounds like a dinosaur but it's like something science. She was one paper away from bringing dinosaurs. Bullshit she's always a lab she always says. Oh I was in the lab and there's something with chemical bullshit bullshit every time I see him like we need Dr. Yeah you know that right. We didn't need more. Can you know but it's more fun. S. have suffered record high temperatures cities and suburbs are some of the hottest places because of what is called the urban heat island effect but there are ways to mitigate that as Brett Dahlberg of member station W. X. X. I. in Rochester reports when it's really really hot out the last place you probably want to be is in the middle of a mall parking lot but that's exactly where I am with Carl court marker he's a professor of environmental sciences at the nearby Rochester institute of technology there's a large expanse of asphalt and if you look out here you'll see very little vegetation where's the nearest tree and it's a long way cities and suburbs in the U. S. have lots of this kind of space expansive black tops with precious little she court marker says these areas are basically big outdoor warming ovens and that makes hot days even hotter it heightens the risk for people who are vulnerable to heat related health problems like older populations and people who don't have air conditioning at home and for everyone else it makes the heat waves even more unbearable the court marker says it doesn't have to be this way even in this desolate parking lot there's an example of how developers can reduce the effects of urban heat island so we're walking over to what what is this just a little better Tatian island in the parking lot you can already see on this if there's moisture right hand on it it's surprisingly cool actually says it's the moisture in the plants the keeps this space cooler than the asphalt and for more examples of how developers can learn from nature he leads me down to a quiet spot by the Janice the river which flows through Rochester we are grass all around us anything that vegetation in an urban setting you are going to be helping to cool it off of that she is also going to sort of cool the building itself I mean think about houses that have big shade trees and they're gonna be cooler you reduce your energy bill Marcus is the closer we can get to having our cities look like natural ecosystems the better off we'll be in heat waves cities across the country are making some progress Rochester's got plant cover over part of it city hall to absorb heat Chicago started promoting reflective roofing and in San Francisco some parking lots are getting resurfaced with new reflective coatings for NPR news I'm Brett Dahlberg in Rochester New York many people think that once you have type two diabetes you are stuck with it but with enough weight loss and exercise people can get their blood sugar levels back down in the normal range research shows people need a lot of help to do that Blake farmer of our member station W. "How how can we get unstuck? So to speak how to get unstuck to finally walk. Whatever we desire, are you? You're the first part of your question. You are asking about what you would call. Comparison passer. Yes. But not really well. Yes. So there is comparison. But let's say they're not even feeling compared they just have this vision yet they feel stagnant. In stuck wherever they're at in life. They have this desire to be come something that they just haven't yet been able to really reach. How can they get unstuck? We must we must create without a need Morin out. Come essentially, we must live our lives from the state, but we understand it as not using maybe in this incarnation time where you stand now. So essentially where we are all going is a distance where we are needless, and we are in being in this. And so we start with we start with this. But we offer you if there is more of a creed of life that you are creating and wanting to connect with we are asking you to make any room that you can for that creativity to flow through view, we must open the valve I in stead of thinking or believing that the future outcome is our hewing, you can see again how projecting into the future or the past as you said only gets us stuck. So how can we begin to open that bow for that being nece or that creativity to come through? How can I begin to make room for this essence in my life? And remembering that, it doesn't help to judge anything, particularly where you are thinking that it will get you quicker to where you like to be you can see that this just becomes entangled. It is okay that we these forms. It is part of the process. For those that have a family are surrounded by friends that do not really accept their new this new way of life that they are being introduced to this lifestyle of highly conscious lifestyle and their beliefs of the universe. Some. A lot of people because most people are not yet aware of or accepting of universal truths that are out there. And a lot of young ones are becoming more awake to it yet. The thoughts are not being accepted by their closest family and friends. So do you have any advice for those that are sitting in this position because that's a painful place to six specially when you love those that are not quite accepting of what you believe in a sense. There is a two two contrasting sides. What is the sole or these soils have come in to share their light? Yes. Even with these family members that are closest to them we can begin to at least consider that the opposing souls have had have contracting this in their life. Lives in have had the courage to attempt to try. These perceptions on even considering their own life experience. So how can we have reverence for the career that exist within these souls? This helps to take away any judgment or frustration that we may be having in that we can see them in in their true. Essence the other thing we would like to offer is is just being aware. And perhaps letting go of the need of them needing to understand or be on board for the new belief systems. Why do I need them to have this belief system? Can I hold this truly honestly a on my own and my willing to carry this torch for myself and also? Being aware of the need to quote, unquote, heal these people in their life, they need. No healing. What if they're healing was only to go through this experience? Yes. Picky back off of this those that may not have others that surround them at this time that believe what they believe. Is there a way that they can call in more people more humans that do have the spill leaf from our perspective, we see that? They have we understand. It is not as easy, but we pose haven't they are ready with this podcasts haven't they are ready with the books that exist haven't they are ready with the resources end connections that exist on your internet, and please no entrust that path will be provided for a physical or more physical encounters. "What did you have in place when you decided to launch myself i had an engineering and design agency that i paid five thousand dollars to build the initial website and i had created a couple weeks worth of content as just content and actually the initial strategy was okay i'm gonna make enough content to create you know enough engagement the people come back to my site and then i'm gonna build apps and all these different categories wedding food home and create utility services these categories then redirect them to download the apps and so the concert was just part of the funnel what happened was what people just started really liking the content abc it's no limits i'm rebecca jarvis in each week we're talking to the most bold and influential women lang at the top of their game trying to demystify success and what it really takes to get there in all the tradeoffs whether you're looking for answers or you just want to hear a good story you're in the right place on today's episode we're talking to one of the women behind the largest digital media companies for women britten co written more and made her way to silicon valley by get this answering a craigslist ad to work at apple she's also worked at google she was one of the original creators of google maps and she launched this lifestyle site less than seven years ago and now today is reaching over a hundred and seventy five million people so how did she do it here's my conversation with brit morin.
