"At Indiana? This is a former high school football coach in this state who has a chance to build off? What was it eight win season a year ago that took them to the Gator Bowl when they want eight games last year. The one that reach that level for just the eighth time in program history. Those air rare seasons now they're not that for gotten program in the state of Indiana. Speaking of that there's another big game in this. Yes, coming up in a few hours when her name takes on the Trevor Laurence less Clemson time 2nd 13 with a minute to play one more or one couple more victory formation, snaps, panics will back up. Take a knee on the clock rolls inside a minute. There's big hugs on the sideline. There's no social distancing when it comes to the hugs among the players of the coaching staff for Indiana. They're about to celebrate a 17 point win over the Wolverines, and they weren't underdog coming in. They were in one more snap, and it's real celebration. 33 seconds 32 seconds. There's one more snap. One more need for Michael Penn ex junior teams will head towards mid field. The Hoosiers all streaming on the field is the final few seconds will tick off the clock. Here at Memorial Stadium and on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Bloomington, Indiana, Hoosiers Moved to Torino and they take down the Michigan Wolverines who falta one into our final. Michigan loses to Indiana 38 to 21 Keith. This wasn't exactly.

"We welcome you back. Our next coach resume would would take the rest of the year to read but He is certainly Hall of fame coach coach the national championship at alabama. He was also the head coach at texas. Am in the sixties. Were of course. He played as one of the junction boys and not only that he was a trustee at texas. Am ten years ago and was always considered to be one of the leading proponents in in the and most influential people involved with am joining the south eastern conference coach dean showing coach. Chevelle how are you. It's great to hear your voice and good afternoon. I'm doing fine and Give too little. This is day. The johnny passed away and You are always extremely kind. John and that's one of the reasons always appreciation for you. He was a joy in my life and but he's in better all understand that. But i still miss him well coach. I'm glad you brought him up. Because anyone who ever had the opportunity to encounter him. And i consider myself very fortunate You know it was moved to by him that we never will never forget him always loved him. And i'm so glad you brought that out. Because i'll never forget sitting in the in the in the press box On january first nineteen ninety. Three after having seen johnny in the locker room. And i've never seen a happier young man in my life of when when he got to watch you carry off the field as a national champion. Yeah but what a joy was in and and we had just a little little small of rome that when the game was over where i was able to busy with john and he looked at many said good job. I remember that extremely well. I'll bet you coach. Thanks so much for joining us. And i think we all want to hear. Your views played that role ten years ago and now watching it as an aggie seeing the horns about to join the sec ball. If i had my rather watch. I don't and i'd rather that An be the only school and there's sac but back when texas was trying to get into the sec. I really wanted that to happen. So i can't be. I can't worry about what's happening texas and oklahoma. Because they're doing what i wanted to happen. And i think they'll be a great asset It's all about money. I understand that but they both have outstanding bro rooms and it'd be fun to watch them and may be in him and and texas will be able to play again somewhere along the line. Yeah that's a game show folks have wanted. I know it's been a few years since since. Yuko sat game but I i'm sure the feeling in the memory never changes. Does it dried in the back in those days and then we're told my longtime ago always by that game on thanksgiving and remember we beat the university of texas In memorial stadium. First time. That bag is it ever one and that particular stadium and we got a day off from school and as a result of that so and i got married right after that games away today also anyway. I very well coach. I'm also interested in your view. And i think everyone knows you who knows you knows your view of college sports and how it's changed and is it ever changing by the hour before we even get to the college football conference part of it. I'm curious your thoughts on on players now profiting coach of nick. Nick sabin said not not more than two weeks ago. The his his quarterback who has not started a game could be making as much as as a million dollars a year from this name image and likeness. Now won't good thanks to happen to the players. No question about that but we got to remember. They go to college for an education and when they're provided opportunity to go to college for pre And the the just the ability to be able to compete on saturdays and and various times and be able be associated with outstanding program. I think i'm not saying it was enough. But i'm saying that was a big deal and I personally hate to say money. Get involved Somewhere along the lines going. call us. Hard valence Somebody makes a good run and he gets some kind of bonus for somebody has to make a blood wartime to provide that good run to happen and somewhere along the line that i think it's gonna create some hard feelings Wants the player to be. Well you know the player receives when when you talk about the various things that they've received That they do pretty good when they get a scholarship. Grants and Thanks of this. It's not like it was when i went schoolwork where you got ten dollars a month laundry money coach had there was a lot of things in a locker room. Wherever you've been in your career but this is a little bit knew how does a head football coach and the and your your staff deal with the potential issues that could arise. I think they're they're. They're all pretty self evident day that. I'm sure glad. I'm not coaching right now. Because i don't really know how to deal with it. You want the player to be compensated. And he is You want him to get as much as he can. But you got to realize that their whole more sports than just football and they out of the gorge An athlete is an athlete. He's a student athletes. If you do one thing for one sport you gotta do it. Fall of man's and women's and everything else. So i think it's going to hurt. That's letty programs. Allow these universities. Let me get to the where we are in. Whenever am whatever. We're never texas and oklahoma get into this league Whether it's in two years or four years or when or or whenever it's still going to create it already has created with many you're describing as super-conferences where if you're not at the very top you're you're going to struggle. I know you. You coached alabama coach at these are not exactly a minor institutions here. But what are your thoughts on. What is happening right now in intercollegiate athletics. Well i think that the rish you're going to get richer and the poor going to be a poor i'll feel sorry for the teams and the big eight. It not affiliated with confidence conference now that not going near the prestige that they had when at texas and oklahoma and Somewhere along the line. It's about money it's How much money you can generate And i think that's a reason they may say otherwise but yet right down to it. I think that's the reason at texas. Oklahoma elected to get into the sec. I do not think that money was what was the driving force to get tech saying them man it. I think the driving force was they had been playing second federal university of texas for a long time now. They had opportunity to ban governed by them of their their own. Get not competing weekend and week. Our recruiting against university of texas So i don't think money was a factor in. Am going in the conference. I definitely thank it was..

"Away, and it will be. It'll be the greatest comeback in Memorial Stadium history as Clemson comes off the mat down 28 kids. Scoring 24 unanswered and well down Boston College today. 34 28 eso ES. They won. They won the game. They stay undefeated, Clemson seven and, Oh, you could take a deep breath, right? That's a nice spot You got through the game, but You got no game coming up, And here's the big news with clubs and it's not just that they pulled out a very close game yesterday with the backup quarterback, but I'm going to have to do it again against Notre Dame. Now, That's the challenge because the news that we got and this is from Devil himself is that Trevor Laurence is not going to clear the protocols in time, and it's not just the idea of you know, when was he diagnosed? And what was the test taken and how many days out its There's testing involved conditioning. If you will cardiac testing it just what kind of shape is he in? Is going to be able physically to get out there and play. And he's not going to clear those parts of the protocol in time. So Trevor Laurence will not play next week for Clemson. Big time problem going against Notre Dame and also for Trevor Laurence. I mean, my goodness, how How do you not feel for this kid? I mean for him to have been possibly drafted as a freshman and then continue to have to keep playing playing meaningless games where he's leaving at half time. He's got 500 yards and four touchdowns already. Now he's got cove it And who knows how that affects him like that guy has just had a really rough time and get better. Trevor Laurence like outside of the football stuff, just get better Get healthy. Get drafted number one overall. Live your life now. Other side of the coin here for a team that was fighting to survive today or yesterday. Completely ridiculous situation here, Okay? Rutgers is playing Indiana. They're getting smoked. All right. It's 37 to 21. There's two minutes left in the game, and, you know it's a close situation here. Okay? Rutgers, just about to break through. It's 4th and 32. OK 4th and 32. Here's Rutgers Federal gun. He's got.

"And it sounds like your mother was sorta crazy like in a good way when you say when somebody has an outsized personality, and everybody's like they just know this is a special person. It sounds like your mom was that kind of a person. Well, I say in the book that my mother was to people. Refined lady first of all he played contract bridge. She went to the opera she liked ballet, she did those elves. She would have gone on a garden tour. You know, everybody's not wondering what's the second part of this going to be the Baltimore Orioles came to town. And it all went out the window. And my mother became a crazy obsessed Orioles fan when did when did the Orioles come to Baltimore eighteen fifty four really really? And now why so Baltimore obviously had no baseball team before that. No, no. They were the St Louis Browns. And they came to Baltimore. I think in one thousand nine hundred eighty three and became the Baltimore Orioles in nineteen fifty four when my mother discovered them, and then all hell broke loose. So say Louis Louis Cardinals. You got the Orioles, and I liked bird names. So tell me why would your mother suddenly become a crazy? Baltimore Orioles fan. I don't get. You know, what we couldn't figure that out because her only connection with sports growing up was that she was on her high school basketball team. And I'm guessing she was probably their leader because she was a take charge person. And then the next thing we know she's this crazy obsessed ball fan. Who embarrassed me nonstop? Yeah. But she could've embarrassed you more. If she had been in Ken Burns's baseball series. Can you imagine do you do you? Remember, I don't know if you remember this. But there was a woman. There was a middle aged woman who is obsessed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. And I think her name was Hilty, and she showed up at every game with the noise may like, you know, she was like an institution and she got into the Ken burns baseball PBS series. So your mother didn't embarrass you to that extent that to that extent. But we did go to ball games. We had a friend who worked for a company that had a box owned a box at memorial stadium. Yeah. And he knew that my mother was such a fan. So he gave us tickets to my chagrin because she dragged me along to a lot of the games. Now did your dad get to nocco? Well, my father went I think two times with her and poor thing. He couldn't stand it when she would get up and dance in the aisles. Stand up and scream. If my mother had done that I'd be dead by now that is to put a kid or husband through that. That's tough. I'm tough on my family because I I'm I'm exuberant, but to do that that's. Well, and you have to remember to how out of character. This would have been for a woman like this. I mean, this is as close to a socialite as as you're going to see always a control, always particular. But the Orioles gave her an excuse to come unhinged. This is so beautiful. I just this is some American. I love this. I had to be careful when I invited friends over that. It was not during a ball game. As a teenager. That's that's tough on a teenage kid. I mean what I put my daughter through. I can't imagine. But you, but so this sounds like at the end of it all this is this is pretty wonderful to have a mother. That's so excited about a sports team. Well, it is. And it did save her life in the end. What does what do you mean? He fell and broke her hip. And was not recuperating well at all. And they told me that they were going to discontinue physical therapy. If she didn't make an effort, she had just lost her will. So I wrote a letter to the front office of the Baltimore Orioles. And I explained what a fan. My mother was how devoted she had been through the years. They it really sound good. True. You laid it on pretty thick this skit schoolteacher knows how to do that kind of stuff and they invited her. But first of all they sent her a ball that was signed by the Orioles. And then they invited her to throw the first pitch out. Oh, my gosh in July, but she had just broken her hip. So I had do with your hip now stand. Okay. We're gonna we're gonna go to a break. This is too much folks. Just in case, you're scoring at home. I want to be very clear we're just coming out of the first inning. I'm sitting here with the famous, Mike. Rowe and is now increasingly famous mother Peggy Rowe and.

"Title stranger of our national anthem here at the rock memorial stadium this afternoon as we rejoin our pregame show and boxer is back with us. Once again as we get ready for this match up here. The shaft Penn State is a ball club. The comes in at four and two they have lost two games in a row to Ohio State by a point and last week to Michigan state after by week. They lose in the final seconds that contest. And just a very very, I guess disrupted from a mental standpoint type ballgame, but Indiana's also lost two in a row, and they've had a mental problem last week because they in playboy, well, especially on the defensive side. And so both of these teams come in here with really an interesting scenario and how who comes and gets ready for this game. Yeah. The two differences as Indiana's coming off a game where they felt like they just didn't give the kind of effort. They're usually give enter trying to fight back from that. Penn state. Maybe a little tougher mentally where they played pretty well have won two games in a row, and then didn't win two games couldn't finish it off. So after the house date game their head coach talked about. Well, we're not pointing elite yet. Okay. I don't know if you want to say that in front of the public or not. And maybe they're not quietly, but they are a very very good football team. Well, they're close to being elite loaded that way, and in that sense alone. They're out of the playoff picture at least. That's most people would recognize that they're not going to be in that picture, and they were very much shooting for that this year while they were honestly down there out of big east too big east losses. So they gotta look at it going boy, we're going to have to get a lot of help to get back involved in that. So they had to re boot their whole goals situation. And it'll be interesting to see how they come out. And the weather's a factor today. And that's always a factor in the mental side of it too. Well, it's going to be interesting as this day wears on how much colder it's going to get that's one of the things, but the wind is just howling here. They're not putting the big flag up. You're right. They're not putting it up today because of the wind factor. So you can you imagine in the wind defies behind us. I'm afraid you're gonna come through that window in a minute. Great. So it is a factor today the ball situation in this helps a little bit. But it's going to be winning for sure. Well, let's talk about Penn State in the sense of how they play the game with trace McSorley? They haven't changed all here in the last three years. They're not quite they're not quite as I look at them. They're not quite as much in the odds again running the football. They call a lot more runs than they used to Barkley.

"Field lights at five different schools such lanes are designed to mitigate the impact that the districts changes in school start times that were pushed back more than an hour or really excited about it i think it expands the opportunities for our students for parent in of seattle public schools says it's all about getting more use on the fields for students and the community we have an increased number of people moving into the district so we have an increased demand for field use the lights would be installed around the perimeter of the field to comply with guidelines set by the city's parks department from dusk until eleven o'clock the lights are also designed to have less glare at night for me it should be fine i know that for other people it would be a more difficult living situation sandy kurtz slips across the street from the field others have concerns about bright lights noise isn't traffic all things the district considered when putting together the plans i think it would be a good idea because like we can't really run in the dark even when the lights are up football games will still be played at memorial stadium near downtown these fields we'll get a whole lot more use the exciting especially as the eu there have two more years left here as for a time line the lights will be installed next summer and ready for use by the fall cathedreal come on air flights are set to be as the roosevelt garfield ballard franklin and cleveland high school skull news time eleven the eleven be oughta brokers sportsdesk time they see hawks in primetime sunday at centurylink field the colts featuring a defense at sea hawks offense of quarter darrell bebel says ought to lend a little bit about first of all as a team we don't know and somebody we haven't played it played in a while so getting familiar familiar with with the players you know with with how you want to attack that the specific defences that they have obviously the players in you know how how they match up how we match up against them the scheme understand the scheme as well so all that just to newness in the familiar getting familiar with them is something that we have.

"Yeah you did definitely that's why you did it you literally said afterwards i had something planned i just didn't know what and here's the deal i'm okay with it so i love that baker mayfield did this she too because ohio state a year before it norman granted it was a team thing with the team together with the head coach saying the alma mater with ohio state fans the corner of memorial stadium norman fine but the didn't stick well with baker may feel in the eu's this is motivation throughout the whole offseason but i'm okay with it there is nothing wrong with what he did nothing i have a problem with him apologize me too do you think that he was forced to a podcast the school made and there's no there is no doubt that after a got such a response that it did which i thought it was fantastic because he went into a hostile environment played like a heisman trophy winner and stuck at to ohio state and they did it the year before i was fine with it but it got such a visceral reaction the day after in the night of 'cause we were talking about this early word football brings up the crazy and all of us people went nuts and so i'm guessing this is pure speculation that some one that sits up in one of the administrative offices that as a suit for a living said well baker took the attention off of the win and put it on himself and made oklahoma look bad it's so you know what we're going to have to have him issue an apology to because that made us look bad the stupid it didn't make them look bad young people that were offended or had their feelings her by where ohio state fans everybody else was here for the petty i loved it it's because it was baker mayfield.
