Checking in on the broadcast TV upfronts in the age of streaming
"I'm Kim masters. And this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter, and Matt the affronts, or in New York have been going on in New York. This is when advertisers are presented with various networks fall programming. It's, it's such an artifact in a way, you know, I used to go every year, it used to be this huge deal. What are the new shows? What are they going to be? And I'm not the only reporter I've seen on Twitter other reporters who cover TV talking about how now it just feels so so much like the certainly the broadcast networks, fall schedules are, are just this kind of diminished thing, obviously, the ratings have been drifting, drifting downward, there's still a ton of money that changes hands as a result of these presentations. But the nature of the presentations, was really different this year. Yeah. I mean you look at what Disney did they had a two hour presentation. And ABC was the very last almost an afterthought at the end. I mean these have essentially become brand plugs for these various channels network streaming services where everybody comes together in New York. And it's just a show essentially of what these content offerings are. And it's the time where all of these companies are desperately trying to create streaming services that people will pay for subscription based streaming services, and they kind of put that all aside for this week long presentation to add buyers where they say, no, no, no, what we really care about, is this twenty billion dollar ad business that they know is gigantic, but that is not the future of television. Yeah, I mean, the Disney one in particular was apparently so overwhelming. I thought that our colleague, Dan, Steinberg wrote a really hilarious. Article comparing it to a buffet at the golden chorale. Which I've never been to the golden corral for a buffet. But there were such there was so much presentation about ESPN and this and that and Disney. Plus I, you know, I think people felt like this kind of fog in a way coming out of it, because how do you even sort through it? And, and I have to say, I am looking at the cancellation of shows on various networks. I didn't even know where on in the first place. So, yes, the model is definitely changing, but the ad market is still there. It's not all doom and gloom people made a joke. You know, this is networks, circling, the drain, or writing the Titanic or pick your metaphor. But this is still a twenty billion dollar business. It is still the numbers are either flat or slightly going up because in this environment where there is so much brand pollution online with these digital networks YouTube. You don't know if you're at is going to run next to Nazi propaganda or inappropriate content. You have in television, a very safe environment still and people are willing to pay. For that. And increasingly they're paying more for that audience, because you can't find it. Elsewhere, even at diminished levels, there was some other news that came out of this, you know, Disney in the middle of it said, we are basically taking control of Hulu Comcast, eventually selling us their stake. It's a complicated deal. But going forward, Disney is running Hulu and that creates another place where Disney will stream content. And there was also kind of apparently attempts breakfast. You know, CBS has long had this bacon and egg breakfast is always one of the highlights of the up fronts, and Leslie Moonves used to come in chat up the reporters every year in the reporters always liked it because he was very personable and people had no idea of the kind of behavior. He had been alleged to have engaged in this year. Kelly, call took over, you know, he was a longtime person who has set the schedule in his now part of setting the, you know, picking up shows, and, you know, there were questions about bull, which is this show where the star, Michael Weatherly was alleged to have harassed? One of his female, his female co-star allies, a dish coup. She ended up being written out of the show. He asked about that. Kelly, call basically said, we think that Michael Weatherly learned from this experience, and I guess it got kind of tense on. I can understand why, you know, Steven Spielberg's Amblin has dropped it's up. It's piece of the show wants nothing to do with it at this point. You know, and you sort of say, okay, he learned a lesson. But meanwhile, she was still written out of the show and CBS. This comes with the culture at CBS that has seen repeated problems. The message to other stars on CBS if you're abusive all you have to do is apologize. We'll move on. Yeah. That seems a little bit lagging behind where we thought we were with the times up movement. Thank you, Matt, thank you. That's Matt Bellamy editorial director of the Hollywood reporter he joins me this Monday at one thirty on the business. I'm Kim masters. And this is the Hollywood breakdown.
CBS fall schedule: Here's how the network is moving on after 'Big Bang Theory,' Les Moonves
"About the big bang theory. And the wrapping up the show, and he promised to do some research on how much money obscene amounts of money, these actors in Hollywood are making well, and it was kind of interesting to read because they the main stars of the big bang theory were all making a million dollars episode, but they all took a pay cut. So that Melissa row and may Bialik both got a big raises because they were earning far less than that. Now, they both make a half million dollars per episode. The main stars that looks like they're making about nine hundred thousand dollars per episode. All right. So. The modern family did the same thing the Casta modern family, they negotiate as a cast not as individuals. Okay. Which is kind of interesting. So anyway, but as a result so that all that adds up to about two percent of the annual revenue the show the annual revenues about a billion dollars. And that's without streaming rights being sold yet. So all those stars are going to split still round twenty million dollars per year in syndication and don't forget, you know, Jim Parsons, the, you know, the guy who really was kind of the breakout star of the show they had that young Sheldon show now where he is the voice of that. So they're not hurt that way. No, no shows going away. You will see it streaming somewhere. I am sure. In the very near
CBS News announces anchor changes at "CBS This Morning," "CBS Evening News"
"Morning. There is a shakeup underway at CBS news this morning. The network announced major changes to its flagship shows this Gayle king on CBS this morning. We are announcing some major changes today moving forward working to get even better at what we do. Those major changes come amid ratings concerns for CBS this morning and also for the CBS evening news. And also after a series of harassment revelations rocked this network in recent years joining us now with more NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik morning. David. Hey, do to what is happening CBS. And why why is it happening now? So let's first talk about what's happening. You're going to see Nora O'Donnell, leave CBS this morning. It's that's their their morning news show, and she's going to become the anchor of CBS evening news. You know, the newscast once host by Dan rather on kites storage show. She's replacing Jeff glor- who's been there less. Than eighteen months. You're going to see a little bit of rotating chairs happening on the morning show. She is doing that John Dickerson's going to leave the morning show and the coin correspondent for a sixty minutes. And you're going to see the remaining this show built around. Gayle king who's been there who's really a sword in recent years, but particularly even in the last year landing a bunch of news making interviews, including a memorable one with our Kelly's been accused of so many crimes memorable interview to say the least. Yeah, really intense and really brilliantly handled by king, and she'll be joined by Anthony Mason longtime Saturday morning show host. He's been a longtime evening news anchor Fillon at a correspondent for the network. Anthony Mason, we'll also be joined by a twenty dokoupil a correspondent for for the network, and those those figures will be rotating in and around these these major programs, and what about the timing is is there something. Significant that CBS is going through all the shuffling at this moment. What does it tell us will even seeing a lot of coverage in a lot of rumors and speculation about what was going to happen? CBS had won some audience and also gotten a lot of morale boost by pursuing harder news edge for its morning show and for the evening news, and yet ratings had sagged in recent years, Jeff chlorine, some ways was expected to be the solution. He replaced got Pelley after Kelly's ratings after initial boost had had declined and there've been some tension between Pelley, the former anchor and former CBS news president David Rhodes glare was supposed to solve onto this under under roads and had not done. So and there've been a question of what's going to happen to pairing of John Dickerson, quite brilliant. Former moderator of face the nation had not had the same level of success as the morning show. It had under Charlie rose. And so they said something's going to happen. Too risky was named at the beginning of the year to shake things up in the shakeup was hers. So is. Is it just about ratings or how much of this has to do with the the sexual harassment scandals that we've seen this network through? Well, you seen a network. The network rocked by sexual harassment scandal from the top les Moonves, the chairman of CBS the entire parent network Inc. As well as Jeff Fager, the former chairman of CBS news in the longtime executive producer, sixty minutes, which is far and away in some ways, the most important show, certainly money maker for CBS CBS evening news CBS this morning. Have sort of been perennial third rated shows Charlie Rose's departure from CBS this morning in late twenty seven teen really rocked the chemistry and rock the stability of CBS news, but they had hoped to Dickerson could stabilize that. This sentence is the latest domino to fall from that. They want to stabilize the show want to stabilize the network insurance scheme particularly wants to show it's hers, and she's going to find a path forward for CBS. All right. Big changes today at
Abigail Disney calls out Disney CEO Robert Iger's astounding pay
"I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellany of the Hollywood reporter, and Matt I think some people at the Walt Disney company in the upper echelons or having a breakdown Abigail Disney whose grandfather was Walt Disney's brother ROY has written an editorial following some earlier tweets calling out Disney CEO and chairman Bob Iger, four his astounding pay. He made sixty five million dollars in two thousand eighteen she points out that's one thousand four hundred and twenty four times the median pay of Disney worker, not the bottom rung the median pay. And you know, she is making a point that that is a bad, look, right, and immediacy ios have famously been paid much higher than their peers in the last couple of decades for many years, Leslie Moonves at CBS was the highest paid CEO corporate America this year. I'm betting David zaslov at discovery will likely be the highest paid CEO in America despite their stock. Doc, not doing so hot lately, but Disney is different. And it is a public facing company. Unlike any other has a relationship with people who go to the parks who see the movies who have a strong affinity for the brand. So the fact that Bob Eiger is making so much more money than the rank and file at Disney. Does mean something in does resonate. And we're seeing that in the media right now. Yeah, it's a Sarah symbol of income inequality. I'm old enough to remember. When begets father ROY who was waltz nephew led an insurrection against management at Disney and ended up ousting Michael Eisner, and you'd never seen anything like the magic of Disney name in that context. Mom and pop shareholders old people young people came to this shareholder meeting because they were fed up. Roy Disney had made the argument that you know, Michael Eisner had wreck the Disney magic. Now. This kind of a dark twist Disney hasn't really responded to this and Abigail. Disney tweeted yesterday. That she was getting some signals that Disney was looking for dirt on her. And I will note that Disney in the past banned the LA times for a period of time for reporting on its tax arrangements with Anaheim, which was a wild overreaction and would not stand. They came after the Hollywood reporter when we reported on John Lasseter claiming that we had four were forced to publish a correction, which did not happen as we pointed out in our story. This tends to be a little a little reactive in these situations. And they've put out some stats that show that they have raised the minimum wage at the parks, and they're doing things to lift up some of the lower level employees. But the point that Abigail Disney is making is that it's not just idir if the upper echelon executives at Disney were to forego some of their extremely high bonuses they could provide significantly meaningful compensation for the lower level at the company, and they just benefited from this. Massive tax decrease that the Trump administration past and instead of giving employees a one time bonus, which they did they could have raised wages. Yes. And I think they're not the only company in that situation. Thank you, Matt. Thank you, that's felony editorial director of the Hollywood. Reporter. He joins me this Monday at one thirty. I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood break this season unless notes from KCRW how does it feel to be like a girl playing instrument is? Well, how's it feel to be a man asking the questions? He was trying to hold onto one of those things more than the other. Yeah. Exactly. Reputation kind of out the window not much. You can do about that one hundred and twenty million dollars pretty big deal. He had at least four women on the hook who had come into his office and give him a Hummer whenever he asked. Linda, can you come in here for a second? And that's the relationship. He had with all women and his work. That's just the way it was and everybody else around their knew it. And and the suction was in the office that they can't be fired or can do whatever they want because he's not gonna get rid of them. May be aware of, what's been going on in my life for the last few days I issued the, one and only statement I will ever make on this topic on Twitter and I will stand by that statement today, tomorrow forever It sounds very sort of like like speaking truth to power it's like no, Honey your husband was credibly accused of inappropriate behavior and Propositioning female employees for sexual Activity in? In. Exchange for a. Job yeah go like that. That is not nothing right like you might feel very convinced that, your husband didn't do anything but it's just a weird statement to make To be sort of like strident Hoots, in the haulers Jill you go what does that say to the woman who put her name to this report in? "Coverage every day, but they just figured where the exotic land of unfortunate natural catastrophe. So whatever, Eric, I think I know what you're three words gonna be about what you tell me me to an moon viz. That's four. No, no. Who is the hashtag? So it's. The cat. Okay, will allow it. Thank you. Moon vis, tell folks who use. So Leslie Moonves is the currency, o of CBS a man who is credited with sort of building the fortunes of this media company and taking it from a network that was thought to service, you know, older viewers into something that's modern and very successful. There was a story in the New Yorker last week that accused him had features, six women, accusing him of sexual harassment, and worse. Unwanted kissing touching and then harming the careers of women who rejected him. Now, he released a statement where he said he may have made advances that made some people uncomfortable, but he never harmed anybody's career and he has denied assaulting anyone and the CBS board decided to move ahead with an investigation. They hired two law firms to look into it, but they did not take moon Moonves out of his job as CEO put him on leave. They didn't put him on leave or suspend him. And this is a delicate time for CBS because they're already. Ready in the middle of this fight. The company that controls CBS an Viacom, a sister company that owns a bunch of cable channels is trying to merge. The two of them Moonves doesn't want to do that. And now in the middle of all of this, a story drops that accuses him of sexual harassment and worse timing is everything. And so all of this is sort of swirling around the TV critics press tour, and we're all wondering if the top entertainment executives CBS will actually answer questions from journalists. The other thing is that what I'm starting to see a lot here a lot in terms of people talking about is that this could be a pivotal point in the metoo movement because some people think it's swung too far. So do you accuse people who's done who've done this twenty years ago? Thirty years ago does is still matter. Where's the tipping point? Now, some people aren't there just spoiling for these women have ruined everything. Let's just stop it. Yeah, but I've, I'm hearing some women say, okay, if you have a person who has been supportive of women in terms of, you know, advancing their careers in two terms of doing the set and the other, and they're accused of this, then what do you do? Jehadis separate the bad boy from the good boy and who's in charge who who was an arbiter, who does this berries even in these organizations who thinks what about what what I found? So interesting this week is the type of responses that we've seen about les Moonves from people who work at CBS Stephen Colbert who works at CBS. He had a very powerful statement on Monday. Everybody believes in accountability until it's their guy and make no mistake. Let's move. As is my guy. He hired me to sit in this chair. He stood behind this show while we were struggling to find our voice. He gave us the time and the resources to succeed, and he has stood by us when people were. At me and I like working for him. But accountability is meaningless unless it's for everybody, whether it's the leader of a network or the leader of the free world. This brave and contrast that with what Julie Chen said, this is less moon vez his wife who is also the host of a CBS show called the talk. She mentioned the scandal on her show this week. Now, some of you may be aware of what's been going on in my life for the last few days. I issued the one and only statement I will ever make on this topic on Twitter, and I will stand by that statement today tomorrow forever. In this statement, basically said I fully support my husband in stand behind him. Leslie is a good man and a loving father, devoted husband and inspiring corporate leader. But like how does an organization like CBS? I bet the coffee in break rooms at CBS. Because you have such a juxtaposition within the organization. There's a lot unpacked there because Julie Chen number one is somebody who was on on air personality at CBS who wound up married to the boss, and this is a guy is accused of.

"But also, you know, when the media finds a way to make itself the big discussion at these events, what did we miss the same week in which we have Ivanka Trump making these comments about the press. And then Sarah Huckabee Sanders getting into it with the press over the same issue. Heads of intelligence agencies were talking about Russian interference, and that's a big deal. And every moment that we're doing the enemy of the people song and dance, we're not talking about these really, really, really big major issues, and that is. What I worry about. I sympathize with my brethren insistent in the press corps that are being attacked by this president, but I also know that it's not the only story why I would also point out that one reason why we're having this discussion now is because of an event that happened in where I live in Tampa, Florida. There was a a rally for Donald Trump where the vitriol directed at c. n. n.'s Jim Acosta was so intense that people were concerned for his safety and in a way it's a way of the press going to the president and almost begging him in a way to to real back this rhetoric before something awful happens. I have three words for my week of news. They are still it burns. As you know, we are all in California right now, and we are in the midst of wildfire season, and it's come this year earlier than usual, which has been the case for the last few years. And every year it seems it gets worse and worse. There is no fire Susan anymore. It's always season. Yeah. And so you know, climate scientists are saying, hey, this stuff is linked to climate change six of the most destructive wildfires in California's history have occurred in the last year. These fires are larger. They are lasting longer. There's one fire right now in northern California called the car fire. It's so big y'all. It's made its own weather system which is frightening. The weather system created by this fire can make its own lightning. It's own wind cloud and perhaps even its own rain. That sounds absolutely biblical. It's weird because you can get used to anything. Right? And so like I live in Florida and people are like worried about hurricanes and they're worried about this and now ain't nothing. You know. So what if I had to evacuate because Irma and I thought my house is going to be destroyed a year ago, but then I come here and I'm like, y'all crazy with these earthquakes in the fire and how you gonna what's the drill go? And so, yeah, you know, there's this low level anxiety that I am not used to living with even though frankly, if I was, you know, more perceptive I would have when I was at home, but but I really do feel well. And my thing with, you know, as we hear more stories, linking these fires to climate change. The thing that I always feel what these climate change stories is the general undercurrent is well, we're doomed anyway, and it makes one quite nihilistic. But why sit and wait for it. I don't. I just wonder like, what can I do. Well, for one thing you can trim those bridge bridge Bush's that are all around your house. Turn into little. A spark hits them for another. We could use less electricity which you're doing with your happy, electric car? Yes, less gasoline. The air quality will be better. That's another part of the problem for California that having spent all this time in money and improving the air quality now that everything's burning up so much. The air quality has gotten worse during fire season and that's affected some people's health. It is one of those stories where if this many fires were happening on the eastern seaboard and be wall to wall.

"Karen, Eric here with me to look back on the week of news and culture and everything else per usual. Got a lot to talk about. There's a fire so big in California right now that it's created its own weather system CBS as we know is still reeling from sexual assault allegations against its CEO Leslie Moonves, and an underground conspiracy theory that is gaining ground this week. It's called q. a non. We'll explain also listeners all you Friday listeners wanna send you back in our fee to our latest Tuesday episode. I was in conversation with d. l. Hughley the legendary comedian. He has a new book that is a hilarious and satirical look at race relations in the Trump era. The combo was worth listen in large part because it was one of those chats. Where any question I asked he answered, all right, let's get into it. I'm going to have each of my guest. Describe how this week of news felt in just three words, Karen, the woman of the hour you're up. I, my three words are not the enemy. Any not the enemy, I think I know what you're talking about too. Well, in this case, this was Evonne ca Trump who earlier this week sort of tried to walk back one of her father's more infamous statements, which he uses a lot as sort of like an his top ten favorites, where he calls the press the enemy of the American people. He's been doing it more at some of his recent rallies and the hostility and the threat of violence has sort of ramped up. And there's been a lot of discussion about that in the news media, and someone asked if Lanka at a press conference for something else earlier this week, she resort it was it was an axios live event in Mike Allen of axios his own AMA. Yeah. Taper. This number of our colleagues here on the press. Do you think that we're that enemy of the people. Sorry. The enemy of the people? No, I do. View that's shared in your family. Are you looking for me to elaborate. No, I don't also like it doesn't matter what she says. Good matters. What he does, president's what he does, what he does. And he actually after this kind of addressed her comments, Karen, he tweeted and said, we'll actually not all of y'all enemy of the people just most of y'all are know. No. I'm so tired of this, Karen. So bizarre. I feel like he both depends on the media and in in needs the media in this very prime away to pay attention to him to make him the center of everything. But then he also beats up on the media. We need him to this thing at the CNN's and the large newsrooms maybe including ours, don't want to admit ex, John Trump is good for business. There would actually be other news to report if we weren't looking, you know, at Donald Trump every two seconds, but would people be, you know, jacking up our audience numbers by twenty percent. That's that's, that's. That's what I'm saying across the board. Almost every major news outlet has seen huge audience gains since the election sustained since the election. My question also is, you know, so then there was this White House briefing worst CNN's a- Jim Acosta ask, press secretary, Sarah Huckabee. Sanders. More about the enemy of the people debates and it was another contentious back and forth the price of the United nation not refer to us as the enemy of the people. His own daughter acknowledges that all I'm asking you to do, sir, is to acknowledge that right now and right here, I appreciate your passion. I share it. I've addressed this question. I've addressed my personal feelings. I'm here to speak on behalf of the president. He's made his comments, clear. Here's my thing with this care, Eric. At some point, the CNN's of the world and the rest of us know what the answer is going to be when you ask that question. So why are you still asking the question? Sometimes I feel like they asked this question to get the heat in response to put it on TV, two gyms, more attention than coverage to go going. Sometimes they asked the question because it was never answered no matter how many times you ask. Definitely. And I think that's what happened in this case..

Let's just say that when you're at a random party in Hollywood and people are like, I hear running Faeroes next piece is going to be about les Moonves as the CBS board knows about it. Yeah, right. I guess they have to legally, but the board decided not to do anything. I think they're probably like, well, he probably didn't rape anyone. That's the bad one right that they feel that he can probably skate by and they can send it to some rehab center and he can apologize. And that's part of the problem. When you make Harvey Weinstein, the bar for bad behaviour, anything under Harvey Weinstein. So many people are like, oh, well, we can. We can work through that and it's like, no, this is still shitty. He probably deserves to lose his job. You don't have to sexually assault someone violently in order to not be competent to to serve in the role that you're in. I will also commend Stephen Colbert who has the late show on CBS and open his show with a monologue about how accountability is for everybody. Are different people? No, I didn't have to take him down. Got it. Got it. Chris, Hardwick did get his job back though. What was his job posting? Fifteen different things. Right? Host talking dead. He had like a nervous podcast at midnight. All I know about him is that he probably abuses women. That's literally like, I, I haven't heard of him before. I know him only because of this I have no conduct's for him. Be a roast of his Wicky was raised. It's just Chris Harrison. Born nineteen seventy-one probably abused women. Since last week I talked with mean not to enduring about James Gunn. They were fabulous by the way. Thank you even nicer. You were blessed with Amina enduring and I know you messed us, but they are Verizon. There was some fence were out of pocket. Blocked some of, you know what you did well, where you were blessed with Amina Doreen are brilliant and wonderful and incredible and better what they do than most everyone living. So respect on their goddamn names. Bring on Amy Schumer next week. Oh my God. But we talked about James Gunn last week. And since then the whole cast is now petitioned Disney to rehire him array. Listen, Chris Pratt, even came out with some bible verses. The statements that was funny thing we're, they're like, we've been thinking about this and praying about this, and I was like, you know, Chris made them put and that semen. Man, it's actually kinda funny to me because it's like the right wing crazy people going against the guardians of the galaxy people. But Chris Pratt is in the middle of this. So he's like this religious right person to right Chris, Pratt, the worst part about avengers only because not hymns like as a person, but his character, whatever spoiler if you've seen, it's been going digital now I was so angry and that you have got to be fucking kidding me. You were messing all this shit up for green girlfriend who's probably not really dead in the first buck in place. I walked out, I was furious. So I've projected onto Chris Pratt as a person you, I feel like they're going to adapt green girlfriend next. That's the next French girlfriend. He's probably still alive, starring scroll. Joe, his right ring, girlfriend. Sorry, Zoe. She's going to shoot out. She's going to issue a statement to the green community. I'm one of you understand you coming up later. This episode, we have a guest. I am very excited about mardi knocks n. I have loved her since puffy the vampire slayer, but she is also a producer, sharp objects, diet land, code black girlfriends guys, divorce unreal. She's doing everything. So we're going to talk to her a little bit later on the show..

"The markets are, rallying today on rumors that China all of a sudden they. Want to renegotiate? Their trade deals isn't. That interesting we'll talk about that we're also talking about less Moonves kinda, surprised the way this is going but we've got. An expert on this media sector he's going to join us. And talk to us about it and then doctors we're gonna be talking about where it'd be talking about, lending money to your family members but busy show busy busy hour for John Mooney joins me. Today by the way and. John, let's talk about les Moonves I I was shocked that. He's still going to work today I was to really thought this would, end up in, les, Moonves says being put. On paid leave pending the investigation they're bringing in outside investigators to look into, this situation that CBS you know the guy who, broke the, story about Harvey Weinstein eight month long investigation where he talked to six women who Who had direct claims of sexual, abuse if not borderline sexual assault and dozens of dozens of. Other people who? Complained about inappropriate behavior. And how many complaints as moon does have about half a dozen in, this case he documented six people Weinstein or does. It was many many people yeah and you know I'm not. Sure this is quite to the extent the AC accusations of what we heard with Harvey Weinstein that sounds, pretty bad some of it sounds arguably worse he held this woman down hinder down I mean. That's that's that's called rape. Yeah, again you know I I think we have an issue. Of due process here and you know I think that even in cases, like this we, shouldn't, you know throw the. Person out and then just you know say well you're accused of this but, the have Sherri Redstone fingerprints on it you know, that's that, was my first initial thought it's like wow okay To this is this is dirty hardball ios a, battle just so you'll know between CBS Viacom once they were one company they split up the red stones were from Brookline Boston you know local people Sumner got to be very, old and was Durrell's daughter, took over his daughter took, over he? Was. Incapable of running, it based on his his healthcare and his mental state at the time and so right now is a. Battle between CBS and. Viacom and Sherry his daughter would. Like for CBS to purchase, Viacom for. Them to, merge into. What they were. Before. CBS, has done, really, well on their own thank you and a lot of us dude les, Moonves and outstanding job he's done running that, network and, I just, think his thinking is we don't need, Viacom there, the, poor, child will we're going, to go a little bit so the feeling. Was that, maybe Sherry went Redstone may have orchestrated. This to, take, a Stab. At the one person who standing up against the merger but and, we have no. No substantiation to that and oh that's, just speculation, and I don't buy it I thought that initially did you, and the reason. Why I don't think. It's the case because the timing is unbelievable is that the guy who wrote this article has been. Working on it for eight months in interviewed literally dozens of people more. Importantly got people to go on the record using their name with specific accusations that's pretty strong stuff. Especially given the fact that this is the. Same person who wrote the story on, Harvey, Weinstein this guy is got. Credibility he does the other. Thing you should be aware of folks is less moon Bez draws. An annual pay package of sixty nine point three million dollars. And if he is fired or leaves the. Company without the board finding him at fault He gets a hundred and eighty four million dollar exit so I think, if if I'm CBS I think what. They're doing is they're saying here okay there's an accusation been made we, are we're going to investigate, it so we can. Get, out, from underneath this hundred and eighty four million. Dollar payment I think that that's? A legitimate point to be made I mean that's why wouldn't you do that if you're the stock if that's your money aren't you saying hold on here one hundred eighty four million. Dollars even if you're a multibillion, dollar media company that's real money exactly and you know they've handled other. People like Charlie rose, a little bit more forcibly yeah but small potatoes compared comparatively Matt Lauer small potatoes Matt Lauer. Making eight million bucks that's. True well if you look at Roche was even making that much and the. The well but this also they also in fairness to we should point. The they were both on the air so and that's a pretty big deal you are Yeah seen. By everybody representing your company in a very very visible way obviously on air les Moonves. While we all know he's one of the most powerful. People in all of broadcasting in all of media the fact is most people don't know, who, he is a lot of. People speculating. He's all done like it could be if if I'm les Moonves and I'm guilty I'm not saying he is. But if I'm guilty I'm going to do a Friday. Night news, dump and just say I decided to retire he's sixty, eight years old he's, sixty eight years old and at? The end of the day if only one of these accusations are correct right. You gotta go he's. Done you gotta, go that's just the era were in always should have been that. Way, but the fact is if he is, guilty in, any of, these he's done Friday. News dump. Always, pay attention to the news that comes out after four o'clock on Friday especially, in the summer I including from the White House elected officials there's a very big stories that they, don't want you to know that come. Out late Friday tell me it ain't so doctors, payments increased drug prescribing by, seventy three percent this, is related to a drug near and dear to our hearts cholesterol, medication yeah and in. Which case you know there's. A there's a five hundred. Dollar a month option and there's a, two dollar a month option and they both. Work? About as well. Yeah but. Yet the five. Hundred dollars a month option is offered recommended yeah I don't know. About you bury but I never felt comfortable with this whole cozy, relationship between drug company representatives. And doctors and I was to be a lot worse John I worked in, the media and some, of my colleagues went to work for drug. Companies and they were paid a lot of money and they're always good looking women were Or good looking men one or the other yeah you look at a drug salesman for Pfizer crest or any of these drug companies here. Like models I'd take, a meeting And they, have lunches and dinners and you find out about, all this other. Stuff which is legal but to me. Is, almost like, bribery well, the the the statistics bear, it out John's seventy even the seventy three. Percent increase in prescribing Drugs yet where you've been taken, out to dinner so the sexy drug. Salesperson, from Pfizer, Yup male, or female takes. You out, to a nice dinner at Morton's right yeah For, that? Right Tells you how great you are and then all sets. Up the tab. You're your Seventy-three you're increasing your prescriptions of their drug by. Seventy, three percent yeah maybe they by like I. Think it happened I've talked to doctors and they deny it profuse they if you talk to a doctor and I've got doctors who are clients and, I've asked them I. Brought, it, up, oh no no we would. Never do that. Stats don't lie I'll tell you where. It. Does happen okay I I have a Stanton, and you know I was taking laboratory and Lipitor cost a fortune literature even makes their own, generic right now which, by the way also cost a fortune. Which is unbelievable but there's a lot of older status that you can literally get on any cheap healthcare plan for like a. Buck a, month I mean it's, literally that cheap some of the older drugs and. They're very effective like I took the one of the old drugs, in my numbers. Went down beautifully, it worked wonderful but we're where I think you have a problem is when you have to be taking a brand name drug and there were two or three different brand name drugs then Then now sudden we don't have, a conflict so. Do we do, the Bristol Myers drug or do we do the Pfizer drug the Fraser woman took me out and that dinner was really nice and the prices are about the same. Right I'm not causing, any harm I make the getting hurt right just, the insurance no one's really getting hurt, but? What really bothers me though is and this is really, effective is the drug companies now realize if, they, take their case directly to the. Consumer they can make the consumer demand the. Expensive drug assuming the insurance companies paying for it right that's why you see all these ads for drug companies drugs on the air because the consumer says oh. I saw the sands beautiful out I want to be just like that person they make the doctor prescribe it seventy six percent of our listeners have loaned money, to a, friend or family member and study that was done by. Lending tree in two thousand seventeen. Says that almost a third twenty eight point seven percent of those who. Borrowed money from or loaned money to a, family member reported suffering negative consequences side? Effects included discomforted holiday gathering's I would think so verbal arguments I would think so and in some instances irreparably Harm to. A relationship well our question poll question is have you ever loaned money to friends or..

"Be targeting younger demos in the younger demos or spending less and less time with television number one and number two the the film studio the paramount film studios really been an underperforming so if you're cbs shareholder you say gee my cbs stories working pretty well the cbs networks doing well the showtime networks doing well and i'm pretty happy with my cbs investment i don't want to see cbs by viacom because i just don't think they're a great company and i think they're gonna be dilutive to my growth rate going forward so i think most investors and i think less of was saying listen if you're going to force us to merge with viacom has to be on our terms at cbs our financial terms we want to we don't want to dilute our shareholders and more most importantly it has to be on our management terms we went our management team to run the combined company and that management issue is really the stumbling block here paul maybe just outlined what was cbs trying to do tactically i think well cbs was trying to invoke a part of their bylaws which is very unique to their bylaws which allows them to convene a special meeting today of the board and to declare a one time stock dividend which would dilute the ownership the voting ownership of an ai from about eighty percent down to seventeen percent effectively negating the control that share redstone would have and that's what got blocked you know when you came in here you said that sherry redstone in less moon vast could never work together again period the end so even if there's some kind of win on this appeal you know unless they actually can strip control from sherry redstone les moonves is out i think so i think the i don't see a scenario here where this management team at cbs this board at cbs can ever come back and work with sherry redstone a national amusements i just think the you know the the the trust the relationships have probably been ero irrevocably.

"Shares of cbs they are down more than six percent after this ruling by the delaware judge a victory for shari redstone who happens to be cbs director and president of the of her family's movie theater operator national amusements of course they're pushing for merger with cbs and national amusements controls viacom here to tell us more about at all as paul sweeney director north american research for bloomberg intelligence and internet and media analyst for bloomberg intelligence paul is this the the conclusion de believe of leslie moonves his career at cbs well it it certainly could be i think we still have probably six months of litigation back and forth between the you know the all the parties here but this was a big blow for less and for the board that was trying to re assert some level of influence and versus its control shareholder national movement here and and that initial opportunity for them really took a big blow here so this is something that i think you know the neck the balls in the court of sherry redstone national amusements and what will they do with the board what will they do with management including less and i think what the stock down six percent at kind of tells you that investors think a deal is coming in mergers going to happen and it won't include les moonves so so basically shares down more than six percent on the expectation that les moonves will exit from the helm of cbs viacom and cbs will merge a lot of shareholders of cbs don't want just can you bring back the memory of y cbs so why cbs shareholders or against this merger at this point i think cbs shareholders view viacom is a flawed asset it's you know it's a company that's been struggling the cable networks are particularly prone to cord cutting because the the tv networks nickelodeon networks and all those they tend to.
