Fires In California And Colorado Cover The West With Smoke
"There are nearly a hundred uncontrolled large fires burning across the western US right now in California Colorado Oregon and other states the fires have forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes and the smoke is affecting millions as NPR's Nathan. Ross reports that is especially worrisome during this pandemic. Stephanie Christianson is a pulmonologist or a lung doctor as she puts it who's already on the frontlines of covid nineteen. She's an assistant professor at the University of California San Francisco and over the last few days and week as fires exploded around the bay area filling the air with acrid smoke sheet and some of her colleagues started asking each other. Every apocalypse packers now is it feels kind of like we're. Doctors it wasn't exactly what to expect. Going into this, the smoke from California's fires and others is blanketing most of the western US blurring skylines and creating haze from the west coast to as far east as Kansas and in that smoke is something that Christians, and says is definitely not good to be breathing particularly during a respiratory pandemic an air pollutant called PM two point five. It's this particulate matter which is really really tiny thirty times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. So it's really really small and that means that it can lodge deep into your lungs where Christians says, it can cause A. Whole host of problems that can increase the risk of as exacerbating COPD exacerbations, heart disease issues, and she says potentially cove in nineteen the viruses new enough that most of the research into links between it, an air pollution like smoke are preliminary but Christian says they do know enough to speculate that smoke inhalation could make the virus worse and it's worrying health officials and researchers all across the western US I was initially really worried about wildland firefighters Luke Montrose is an assistant professor of community and Environmental Health at a very smoky Boise State University, and served transition my thought now. To today's the first day of school at Boise State and the first day of classes for a lot of schools K. through twelve in the West in normal times. MONTROSS says during Smoky Fire Seasons schools can keep windows shut but in a year like this closed the windows and potentially increase the concentration of virus that could be spreading around the school because you're trying to reduce the amount of toxic wildfire smoke a situation he says where there's really no good choice. Fresh air and fear of mass transit puts bicycles back on Mumbai streets
"GonNa, start with Mumbai Bicycle Counselors Why are they getting on the bikes? Like most cities around the World Mumbai has started rolling out pop bike lanes to accommodate I mean I've I've seen a huge increase in the number of black as people sort of shook public transport during the pandemic but the city is taking it one step further than pop up bike lanes are going. Install in positions of influence in city, Council counselors for its twenty four wards who are going to advocate for cycling, which is really exciting. So they're gonNA essentially, they're going to be Negotiating with stakeholders like local businesses are the civic authorities, NGO schools and colleges. To help the rollout of black lines and black infrastructure in the CD and looking helping to set up Docs for for bikes for for people to pick him up from train stations, and even setting up training zones in parts of the city for people that aren't perhaps confident on their bikes to learn. But a bit of a backlash Montrose in some places over the provision ice lanes. Maybe, this is the city that actually could have used simple counselors because because to me, it seems like there's been a little bit of a breakdown in communication in Montreal or at least certainly in terms of engagement with with the local communities. Said, they're rolling out temporary black lanes as many cities are but. A stretch in in Montreal on a believe it's it's not street Notre Dame street West outside a few venerable restaurants and establishments. Has received some backlash from from the restaurant owners there, and actually we didn't twenty four hours the city at roll back their plans to the temporary Klein and sorry it had been installed removed temporary black line and I think for me here. The thing that's interesting about this story is clearly there wasn't enough consultation and and perhaps perhaps the solution. That I propose wasn't necessarily suitable for that part of the city which clearly is relying on people unfortunately, not unfortunately, the reality is that lots of people in the city still need to be able to drive their cars and drive to these restaurants and and perhaps a better solution that balanced bike lanes with car parking motive might have served the solution that.

You still have the two right lanes blocked south found 65 before 61st Avenue traffic just getting by in the left lane. South bound and it is jammed up from 80 94 all the way down to the scene here because of just a single in getting bias here really backed up on the South bound side of I 65. The delay actually starts on 80 94 eastbound. Starting all the way back and burn overnight 65 because the extra into south and 65 is jammed as well. So expect some extra travel time. If you're heading south on I 65 trying to get into Merrillville and points south on the Edens Expressway were looking good on the in bound side. Love to see one one instance of Improv in the wild room like hell. Yeah I'm in. Improv in the wild I used to live in Utah, and they had a pretty big well. Almost twenty years ago, a couple of good improv troupe there that would do do shit. Live shows once a week and they were. They were pretty good I think one of my favorite I guess games. Is that what you guys? Call him well? There's if you're doing short. It's games if you're doing long formats forms. Tell me. What is it was a thing they would do where they would act. As they had eight minutes to act out a scene, and then they'd repeat it with half the time and repeat it until it's like a second long. Oh sure. Yeah, that's a game. Yeah, come at Comedy Sports Game. That was it was impressive. It was very impressive trying to keep track of it. How was living in Utah, isn't it? Is it fairly strict like no alcohol on Sundays and? Stuff that Utah Yeah. Nothing's open on Sundays, the whole pretty much closed. Because it is the Holy Land depending on, you know, the God of your parents, choosing whichever one it is. I moved I moved from Utah to Delaware. I live in Ireland now. Okay, but Quite a not really a culture jump there but I it is. Go. WHERE OUTSHINES UTAH? That's I'm just GONNA. Say I, don't have much love for Delaware, but you get right on out of here. If you're going to tell me, Delaware's not better than Utah. The apartment that I was living in was also the apartment that house the Mormon missionaries and I role in car with Utah plates, and they all flocked over like I was from the Holy Land and. Insane and then I had one guy follow me home when I still had my Utah Tags. He followed me for four or five miles and he's like. Are you a member of the Church? That man John Stockton. Listen I still got love for John Stockton. I think it I think is the all time NBA leader in assists and steals which is insane. I have to actually admit Chad. I gotta change my answer from earlier. The thing that you definitely wouldn't guess about me. Is that as a child? I was an enormous Utah Jazz Fan that. That is what you wouldn't guess about me now to be fair. That's only because of NBA Jam. Okay I was GONNA. Say Greg Ostertag. Well Yeah I. was there for that Hornacek? To Montrose Montrose on time. I missed I. Missed the Carlos Boozer era you. M. as increasing tensions but how does that cut across partisan and racial lines about nine in ten Democrats and African Americans think he's increased racial tension as do almost three quarters of independents and sixty three percent of whites forty one percent of Republicans say he's decrease tensions but you know the pollsters say that they found a pretty significant that given how much Republicans have lined up in lockstep with trump that almost six in ten of them believe that he's either increased tensions or that they're not sure if he has by the way between trump and Biden people say Biden it would be better to handle race relations in the country by a substantial margin fifty two percent to thirty four percent and this of course comes against the backdrop of massive nationwide protests at the death of George Floyd what are Americans saying about the protests well you know trump said a lot of tough talk about the demonstrators obviously but Americans as a whole don't agree with his characterizations of them or overall sixty two percent that we talked to say that they view the demonstrations as mostly legitimate protests as opposed to people acting unlawfully that includes eighty seven percent of Democrats sixty five percent of independence the exception here is Republicans fifty nine percent of Republicans think the demonstrators are mostly acting unlawfully not really should be noted though that these numbers are a really big sea change from the nineteen sixties when most people had an unfavorable view of civil rights demonstrations and thought that they would hurt African Americans goal of racial equality when it comes to police in our poll a majority still have at least a fair amount or great deal of confidence at their local police treat black and white people equally but I have to say that percentage is down eight points since Marist last asked the question in twenty fourteen and there's a huge racial divide with almost half of black Americans saying that they have very little to no confidence that the police will treat everyone equally what's the numbers their numbers to watch in the coming months thanks so much Domenico you're welcome Sir that's an and you're.

"All right. So there you go. I mean this this. Kinda starts off this This Kind of Semi-joke tuner party tune aspect. That you get in Van Halen but you also get throat. Many many Hair metal albums that as time goes on But yes so so montrose. Did this light moment. You know levity going back to the roots playing this rock n Roll Party tune. Everybody loves booby So they stuck one on their record and Van. Halen did Exactly the same thing. So there's another parallel there. Okay so a couple. More comparisons than than were done Let's see Both Eddie Van Halen and Ronnie Montrose embraced keyboard and synthesizer technology despite being dedicated scholars of guitar and all the toys one could Hook up to it to make it go still by the mid eighties. Eddie was on his way towards massing tidy collection of keyboard dominant songs. Ronnie with nine hundred eighty two gamma three had delivered much to the surprise of a small but dedicated fan base full album. Virtually themed upon synthesizers so Van. Halen starts using keyboards Pretty pretty for real on What would we say a Romeo Delight And the cradle will rock but then you know shocking. The world with jump Th with with a super super keyboard riff I might do an whole whole episode on this idea but but basically they need you know. He's picking up playing the you know the piano. So we get these these schmaltzy Hey good hearty. Piano Songs You know the big power ballads Sammy Hager singing and whatnot. But there's there's quite a bit of keyboards and since you know cool ideas. I love the fact that he's such a creative guy he's a mad scientists that he that he embraces this stuff even though he's the greatest guitarist in the world whatever right so he's in there Learning to play piano using a lot of synthesizers Ronnie same thing. I mean the band gamma itself are even right from the start with Alan Fitzgerald on on keys. I think he's a synthesizer player on the first album. A gamma one gamma to gamma to is one of my favorite albums of all time. Please go check that out. Killer killer record a super classic hard rock record but you know a good futuristic bit to it as well reminds me a little bit of Robin trower. Some of it Davey Pattison the lead singer. There's a connection there with our But essentially that band is Is put together as a futuristic heavy hard rock band but the gamma three album like say Is is lots and lots and lots of Synthesizer there Mitchell from in on that one Okay so let's see what else we got. Okay we're up to our very last comparison And this is an apt way to end. This sure. It might have been all hugs and kisses in the beginning but soon enough. Ronnie Montrose was at odds with all of his lead singers namely Sammy. Hager Bob James Davey Pattison and for that matter Edgar Winter Similarly Eddie Van. Halen soon found himself more than happy to break the marriage covenant with both David Lee. Roth and Sammy Hager so again I think in Ronnie's case you know Ronnie sadly is not with. Us committed suicide in my book. You'll hear three four five reasons all coming together of why that might have happened. We won't go into that here but you know he was known to have The struggle this ego struggle with being Upstaged by the lead singer Ted nugent had the same problem with with Derek Saint Homes and Ronnie definitely had that problem. Now I don't know if If so much. Eddie had that same fragile ego. I don't think so I I in Van Halen. It's more of a situation with Dave being like pulling you know almost pulling out your hair too much of an outsized ego so I don't think it was essentially the same kind of EGO BATTLE BETWEEN THEM. But but we know you know. Dave didn't get along and Eddie and Sammy Later essentially didn't get along either so both of the band's have that comparison of the lead guitarist namesake of the band having trouble with their lead. Singer's all right there we go. Let's wrap this up. This has been another long episode But yeah I thought this went pretty well So there we go. There's your comparisons between Montrose and van. "All right. So moving on In our comparisons here in history and five songs with Martin Popoff Episode Forty Four Montrose and Van. Halen Ronnie Montrose and Edward Van. Halen were not only the namesakes of their band but they were essentially the leaders and main music writers. Okay so I've kind of made this point before but But it no it is. It is a little bit more of a comparison that You Know Ronnie essentially was writing all of all of the music for this band Not so much the drummer denny. Denia Karma's your fill the electric church Upchurch basis. Saint Same Van Halen. Mikey wasn't doing writing David. Lee Roth wasn't writing music. Alex no so Eddie's writing kind of kind of everything in the same thing is happening here okay next point Ronnie Montrose and Eddie van. Halen were both major guitar. Amplifier tinkers and gear heads in both cases arguably to the detriment of their careers. Both Ronnie and Eddie found endless amusement breaking down guitars and absent pedals inventing gear and the new sounds. They produced in the process as for the ill effects on their career. Ronnie kept changing styles and eventually settled into a pattern of obscure jazz fusion and new age type instrumental albums. One might view Eddie as so obsessed with tone and technology that he forgot to write songs and record them not the case from about nineteen seventy five to nineteen ninety-one but since then there have only been Three three Van halen records and zero solo albums or side projects. So yeah this this to me is a real trat tragedy and travesty of Eddie's career that we just haven't gotten more music out of them imagine what is in those vaults tinkering away and I was thinking this morning about Alex. The same thing we we don't we don't get Alex if you don't get Eddie you don't get Alex But Ronnie fell into this long career of these solo albums. You know he had one trying to make an album nineteen eighty-six meaning you know whole different band. Didn't sound like Montrose. But he's basically I. I gotTa make some money at this point this you know. There's this hair metal thing that I kinda was part of inventing. You know I gotta try participate in this. We made this album called mean on a kind of a mid size labelling it didn't do well But yeah obviously Van halen recorded very sporadically throw timing and I do believe I. I really do believe that. In both cases They're being Obsessive to the point of slight mental illness gear heads Has caused some of this. They're just so into gear that they did forget to write songs both of them. Okay so moving on Although it only contained one cover montrose feature to heavy metal rendition of an old time. Rock and roll tune good rocking tonight called the template for Van Halen's treatment of ice cream in from the van. Halen record five years later. The fact that good rock tonight was a moderate hit from Montrose. Might have helped with getting ice cream onto the van halen record so yeah good. Rocking tonight is cover. Roy Brown wrote it. Ice Cream in is a cover. John Brim wrote it Let's actually take a listen to this. Here we go This is this is our fifth one. Fifth and last entry. Van Halen with ice cream man..

"All right. Just love that song. That was so cool. You know I just love that That really I consider this almost the first modern heavy metal song to come out of America ever It's a bold statement But yeah I I you know we had. We had the origins of American metal with what was kind of going on in Detroit but then basically the UK took over and America was caught in that British blues. Boom thing with cactus mountain. And all that you know. Eventually we got our aerosmith and bluish. Her Colts But you know and kiss but basically no one no one did it better and more modern and rocking than Montrose. In nineteen seventy three with their debut album Just simply called Montrose again. I don't WanNA GET AHEAD OF MYSELF. I don't want to say too much here. But let's Let's go through these connections. Okay so montrose and Van Halen. I as we're calling this episode. I connection between these bands. Both bands were from California Montrose from San Francisco and Van. Halen from La Alright. Not much more needs to be said there. The origins of these two bands. I won't get too into it but they're vastly vastly different. There's really no comparison to the way Each each came into being van. Halen sensually baby band grew up over a lot a lot of years to arrive at nine hundred. Seventy eight with their debut OB- Montrose. He's kind of. He's kind of a little bit of a celebrity at this point. He's been in the Edgar Winter Group. He's He's played for Van Morrison and end. This band gets kind of put together around him. But let's let's not go too far into this because I don't want to step on my other point so let's go with the point number two Both bands early material was produced by Ted Temperament and engineered. By Don Landy Temple. Men Typically didn't do hard rock but he did a roaring good job on montrose with van. Halen subsequently keen on having Ted. Bring all the D. applied to that record into their world. So this is one of those you know cool. I you know. What do you want your record to sound like? We wanted to sound like this sort of situations. The Montrose album was recorded gorgeous. -Ly Big Fat Molten Electric Guitars just super modern for nineteen seventy-three. I often I often make the quick or the case that basically after nineteen seventy-three with dark side of the moon. You had all the base in trouble you wanted from that point forward It was simply producing with simply a product of choices. At that point you can have all the high fidelity you could ever want after nineteen seventy-three as this semi argument that I make So basically you couldn't produce any better than you could in nineteen seventy-three nineteen seventy-three to me. Is that point and you know and frankly like I say this montrose album kind of fits in that This this is a great sounding record. You couldn't even want a record to sound Better than this. From this point forward you can do anything you want to make a record sound. Good whatever you did you were just moving things around by personal preference as a or a producer. Kind of my point. Okay so moving on both bands recorded for Warner brothers records so You Know Montrose. High High Identification Worth Warner Brothers. They had it even had an album. Called Warner Brothers presents. Their third album was called that and van Halen Super Super High Association with Warner Brothers to remember there was that That kind of Promo LP sampler thing that had the the looney tunes Logo on on the front of it. I believe but basically You know not. All bands are super associated with their labels but Montrose and Van. Halen were both super associated with their labels next point Montrose. Debut record was a self titled the name of the Band and the name of the record. Being the last name of the band's guitarist same a van Halen right so Ronnie Montrose. His band is called Montrose. Eddie van Halen Alex Van Halen. Their record is called Van Halen. The Band is called Van. Halen too so. Both of them are banned an album. Yeah you get you get the point. Quite a comparison there Okay so moving on Both Montrose and Van. Halen sported the classic who type configuration of their membership. Four members namely guitarist basis drummer and frontman vocalist. Who generally doesn't play an instrument. So there you go so there there again you have this The the focal point on the one guitarist he's like he's like you know the the leader of the band and And you know kind of the main thing competing with the With the lead singer. We're going to get to that as the very last point because that's gonNA become contentious Probably yeah mean basically in both of these bands Okay so moving on we have Okay so on the first two MONTROSE ALBUMS. The lead singer was Sammy. Hager who would move on to a prolific solo career before reaching the top of the rock and roll pile as lead singer for van. Halen so this is obviously one of the massive massive comparisons The Montrose band their lead singer with Sammy Hager and when Sammy Joint Van? Halen I mean this is a big big point To him getting that job and doing great in that job they did huge huge business and made a bunch of records You know not as many as they should have made But that's another story I in fact was GonNa do an episode on this whole idea of wasted talent And the two came to mind immediately were Eddie van. Halen and Brian May They basically haven't made enough music Given how awesome and talented. They are But Yeah so Sammy going into Van. Halen you know. Two things. Were super important at this point while three things. He's a great singer. He's a great front man. He was a good personable guy but he did have this long long bank of Solo career to him so he had the stature You know he was kind of a mid mid West Midwest mid place kind of band sandwich band but he was doing okay and of course he came for Montrose which Van Halen Super Super Light. Okay so let's move on. Let's play another song This is van Halen with atomic punk. Take a listen.

Lou Williams, Los Angeles Clippers And Houston Rockets discussed on The Stephen A. Smith Show
"The Los Angeles Clippers or eight and five on this season, the Los Angeles Clippers it's very very early. It's only thirteen games in we understand that. But that's still should not take away from the job that we're watching Doc Rivers do with this team laser, gentlemen. I am feign this kid Montrose. Herro he is the closest thing to Dennis Rodman that exist in the NBA today in terms of his activity on the court, particularly on the defensive side of the floor blocking shots rebounding defending on a perimeter rebound. Some more running on a break the activity of this guy. What is something special to behold? This guy could play on my team any day of the week. I love what he does for the Los Angeles Clippers right now. And I gotta tell you something. I don't think it was washed but Houston to lose somebody like him. I really really don't. I really don't when you want to know what's going on with the Houston Rockets. And while they're struggling so much. Don't look at Carmelo Anthony. Look at the absence of Trevor reason, the lapses of Luke embar muti the absence of Montreal's herald, look at that they come talk to me. And the ashes of just as diligent the physical ordanation who abruptly retired. But now has decided to come back after you handle family matters, probably around thanksgiving. He'll be back those four components that are pivotal to your defensive prowess that you enjoy last year as the Houston Rockets, would you the number six defense in the entire NBA? So there are more who I am a fan of who has been a guest on this show who I think has done a magnificent job as executive and as the GM and the president operation for the Houston Rockets. He might have dropped the ball on this a little bit. Nobody's perfect. But we gotta look at it from that perspective. Nevertheless, that's not my point Montrose Herro. And Lou Williams sixth man of the year this brother special, and I'll tell you right now somebody needs to arrest somebody on the clippers that because this guy Lou Williams getting only eight million a year. I want to know who is aging is. I wanna knows age this even though I really really do know. But I'm not gonna bring his name up on the end. 'cause I don't wanna get in the way of any business. I will say this to the agent of Lou Williams eight million a year for this guy in this NBA economy. Lou Williams is worth it least double that. Double Louis should be getting fifteen to sixteen million a year will what he gives you off the bitch foot, Los Angeles because it's not like he can't start. It's just that. He's so affective off the bitch. Why would a good thing? But Lou Williams can ball, flip plain simple. I want the ball in his hands around money, Tom because most often more often than not he finishes. I love Lou Williams. So I want to point that out. He's underpaid. He's not under appreciated 'cause the clippers level, but he is under paid.
