"About Mohawk steel workers, watch the complete 13 part indigenous led series. Go to WWW dot Mohawk iron workers dot com. Produced by Courtney montour, Mohawk from Ghana wagga and Paul rickard, who is almost cago Cree, from moose factory in northern Ontario. Through mush keg productions incorporated, which is an indigenous production company specializing in films and videos about the indigenous experience. Their films deal with contemporary issues facing Canada's First Nations. Their environment, activities, traditions, and their struggle for economic and political autonomy. All right, how about we circle back to listener Glen's email? If that's okay with you, brother. Sure. Okay. And he wrote to us in part. Also, he recognized he said that in the future he'll do a better job. Detailing for us, you know, what he's okay with sharing publicly and what perhaps he doesn't and just wants to be for us, but this looks to be okay to share with the public so that's what I'm going to do because it pertains to some of the some of the commentary that I've provided in the past over the buttoning wind industry wind energy industry. Which is something that I work in through my work in tribal historic preservation. So Glenn writes here. My primary reason for writing, however, meaning in this particular email. Has to do with wind turbines, he says. Wind turbines can be a really interesting way of generating power, and there is really a lot and really, it's good. And there is really a lot to like about them, he says. However, I also agree that there have been some very significant issues. This has been primarily illustrated here in Oregon recently. Portland General Electric has had a number of issues at one of its wind farms, including the spectacular disconnection of an 11 story long wind turbine blade from its connection to the actual rotor, the heads on these wind turbine generators are called the cells. And they work very much the way a propeller does for an aircraft. The blades actually can move. And adjust themselves to either speed up or slow down based on the oncoming wind. And there have been stories, and this would be another one because what Glenn is referring to because he didn't make any designation one way or the other, that these would be land based wind turbines when in fact the work that I do deals with offshore wind turbines, of which are in many cases of three and four times larger than any of the land based installations that includes the length of the blades, the blades on the offshore wind turbines are about three football fields in length to give you sort of an idea. And one rotation of an offshore wind turbine can power a house for 24 hours, just to give you sort of a comparison. So it goes on to say a nearby wind turbine farm owned by a farmer. A farmer cooperative that owns the land under the turbines, has had no such issues, he says. But aren't a for profit corporation answering only to their shareholders as Portland General Electric is. He goes on to say, thus, Michael's skepticism about the offshore wind farms being developed in the northeast by for profit corporations is well placed based on experience here in the northwest. I think much better results could be achieved if tribes themselves, he says, formed corporations to operate wind farms such as the farmer owned one that has fared vastly better than the general, the Portland General Electric one. Well, I can't speak to what tribes should or should not do, be it economically or otherwise. Our concerns regarding the northeast offshore wind industry encroachment as I like to frame it has to do with them building these in our all of our traditional homelands that are now submerged. Many of which were our village sites, our burial sites, and the federal government in their being led by science. Once us as tribes to point to specific locations, submerged in the ocean and say, show a specifically where these areas are and we will avoid them. Yeah, that's fair, right? And so when we present information such as, well, take Nantucket sound. That entire area is definitely the homelands of, say, the wampanoag people. So therefore, avoid it, and they go, well, we can't avoid it. We need to get our cables to shore. So then they go, well, too bad so sad to the tribes. That's the position we're in relevant to offshore wind. Land based installations are a little bit different. In some cases, more defined not that I necessarily agree with those definitions, but we know what land borders there are, right? And things like that. But out to see these challenges are, in my view, very much undefined. And the governmental standard all day long and say, well, these are we're talking about the federal water space. We are in charge of the federal water space. Well, by who, you don't have a signature by any tribe that says we have relinquished control of our ancestral territories to you. So undefined in my view. And then he's provided a couple of links, which we'll share in the show notes. And it looks like there's a video here too. We were so excited when they started building. It was so fun watching them go up because they would even in the snow, you know, even in the dead of night we'd be out there watching them because it was just so cool. And I like alternative energy. So I was really excited about it. Things started to go south about. I'd say probably. In years ago, I started having more issues. I'd say in the last three or four years, it's gotten really bad. That's my take. A lot of times they'll be 24 of them. Shut down out of 217 towers. That's a lot. They had it down to their only four that weren't running out of 217 before COVID right before COVID. So that was the best that had been in years. And then 2020 came and it went south. The last actual meeting that we had with them was down in hood river right before COVID wasn't it. March of 2019 and that's what they were basically saying is that this would be the first project shut down because the tax credits were gone. So it was more advantageous for them to run their one up at Dayton because that was a newer project and they still had tax credits so they could run in. And it felt to me like they were saying, it's our project. We'll run it when we want to. And I said, well, I thought it was like a liaison between the landowners and you. I thought we were like a big team. They're like, well, I didn't know what to do after that. Because it was obvious that they were going to do what they wanted to do and they didn't really care about our input. For us as farmers having it on our land has been nothing but a boom. I mean, it has been good because they only take out .8 of an acre, including the roads, so we didn't lose more than a hundred acres. But my thing is, I want green energy. I want them to run. You know, it really bothers me that all those tax credits are gone and now they're just obviously
