"Letter to the university community, UMD's chief medical officer says the staffer has taken all necessary medical steps and is doing well. The letter says appropriate cleaning and disinfection has been done that, according to CDC guidelines, the prince George's county health department is leading the effort to notify people who may have been exposed. The letter says it's likely there will be more monkeypox cases on campus and the university is monitoring the situation in partnership with local and state health departments. The first day of fall classes at the university of Maryland is August 29th. Montgomery county health officials are asking for more monkeypox vaccines and asking everyone to make sure they're up to date with their COVID vaccinations too. Montgomery county executive Mark L rich noted the county's current COVID level has dropped from high to medium to low, but warned it could easily pop back up into the medium range. But we're happy to be in low for now and hopefully this will maintain itself. I know a lot of people are expecting a spike as kids come back to school and people return through vacations. "Be election certification day in Montgomery county, a fairly routine process, but it won't be because of an unexpected development. We've learned that the Montgomery county board of elections won't certify primary election results at this afternoon's meeting because workers found more than 100 sealed provisional ballots during a pre certification audit. The ballots were discovered during a search of folders where provisional ballots had been stored. WTO's Kate Ryan says the unaccounted rather uncounted ballots are important because just 42 votes separate Montgomery county executive Mark elric and his challenger, David Blair. Blair said he'd file a petition for a recount, and he has four options, including asking for a manual tabulation of printed reports from early voting, election day, mail in and provisional ballots. The board of elections will meet at three 30 this afternoon to talk about the audit findings and to schedule the counting of those newly uncovered provisional ballots. Good news about COVID and Montgomery county while the fight against monkeypox continues in numbers rise. Maryland state health officials don't report monkeypox numbers by county. There are 335 cases statewide. In Montgomery county, health officials have asked for 2000 more doses of vaccine to combat monkeypox, and they report that COVID levels have gone down. The county is now in the low range. Earl stoddard the county's assistant chief administrative officer says part of the reason for that dip is seasonal. We are moving into that more expected low to medium transmission that comes associated with a summertime. But he adds, I would fully anticipate those would move back indoors in the fall. We will see an additional surge again, whether it's BA 5 or another variant that emerges. Kate Ryan, WTO P news. Rep. Chip Roy Reacts to Biden Withholding Monoclonal Antibodies From Florida and Texas

"Is even more horrifying And we have the Montgomery County judge here in Texas, which is near Houston. Who posted on Facebook yesterday, the day before. I'm not sure if you saw it where he right. He wrote out the 2000 Texans that were benefiting from the treatment that they had put in place to have a clinic or set up there to run these mono monoclonal antibody treatment. And it was successful. And this is where the vaccinated and unvaccinated and then now you've got the Democratic leadership in Washington coming in and saying no, no, no. We're going to step in and interfere with the market and create a problem that didn't really exist. And I look, I wrote a letter to the HHS on Monday, lighting them on fire about this and raising this issue up the flagpole and then load the whole We get 24 hours later, they were gonna have a briefing on Friday. We had that briefing today, Mark And I asked twice. I got cut off. And then I got back in Q asking a second time. Hey, how many, Uh, doses do you currently have a supply? How many can be made per month and what's the demand? You tell me the numbers. You show me how there's some massive national shortage that you've got to interfere, and they would never answer the question. Literally, he said. Well, we'll just have to get back to you. The numbers to wait you're stepping in and rationing care. Rationing what Texas can get, and you can't even tell me what the numbers are its political. They started off of saying seven states have 70% of the demand on this stuff and get never mind in January. It'll be 10 different states Mark because we know how this virus works. And yet that's what they're doing. It's political. It's purposeful and people's lives at stake. And they're doing it because they don't want to talk about treatment. Not just this. But after cork wine back when that was more effective. Let me tell you something about, uh Hattrick chloroquine. I've been taking that for months. Have heart disease and asthma. Maryland Board of Education to Host Special Meeting on Statewide School Mask Mandate

"Vote today may change that. A special meeting is coming this afternoon to be held by the State Board of Education, which is considering an emergency regulation that would require face coverings in all schools. Some local districts already have mandates in place. Others like Carroll County, do not. "County's chief special needs housing. Explains that there are other things that can slow down the process like good difficulty finding a job. Landlords not wanting to house those who are experiencing homelessness and delays in case workers. Trying to find time to meet with their clients and then the bigger issue that harris brings up is the lack of affordable housing the county and more widely in the region. No and there never has been enough housing. There's definitely a lack of affordable housing here and particularly for the folks that we see that are experiencing homelessness that are extremely low income. They're making less than thirty percent of area meeting income and just to know. That's less than forty thousand dollars a year and a county that has one of the highest median incomes in the country council members sent a letter to county executive l. Rich last month asking him to come up with an alternative plan to house these individuals. What have they been saying about the conditions of the shelter so council president. Tom hucker who just so happens to be considering. A run against eldridge for county executive sub last week that if this were a private business like a restaurant or hotel the county would shut it down but the county owns this property and they're in charge of maintenance and repairs to the building. Here's hucker. I think it was a terrible decision for the county executive to commandeer those two rec centers to use them for for emergency housing. It's counter to our racial equity and social justice policies and reflects a lack of compassion and respect and here even people who run the shelter. They say they didn't imagine being in the rec center for over a year. They thought it'd be a three to four month temporary solution and you know obviously. This pandemic has lasted much longer than anyone anticipated. How is elrick responded to that criticism in a press conference last week. Allerg- stood by that decision and said that hucker and other council members have the opportunity to say something when this plan was created last year. He said that over the past few years the county has changed its housing policy to allow people experiencing homelessness to sleep indoors year round. Which is has has helped lowered. Kobe transmission rates among the homeless population but also meant they needed more room for shelter space. Did he point to any solutions to the issues facing the individuals in these rec centers currently so long term. There's a homeless shelter being built. But it won't be ready until late. December early january in the meantime our says he's trying to find more space in the county to temporarily house people and he hopes to announce a plan this week possibly day and more importantly the women experiencing homelessness that i spoke to recently really want stable permanent housing and until the county solves the problem of not enough affordable housing. "It's monday and that means it's time to chat with w amu reporter alley schweitzer about the week ahead in regional news and what the w amu in dc newsrooms. We'll be keeping an eye on. Good morning alley either esther so it's almost august. I can't believe i'm saying that. It's almost august but it doesn't seem like the summer doldrums have set in yet particularly in montgomery county. Where a few big issues are coming up for consideration. Yeah folks who traveled through the jurisdiction lately may have seen signs on the side of the road that say no cell towers near homes That has to do with the vote scheduled tomorrow in the county council on a zoning change that would allow five g. wireless antennas to be installed no less than thirty feet away from homes as long as they replaced or occupy existing utility poles five g. is of course the follow up to four g. It's faster it's better. It'll make you look younger okay. That last part isn't true but five g. is the next generation or really the present generation of high speed wireless technology and a lot of homeowners in montgomery county. Really do not want these towers near their houses. They've been fighting it for a few years now. A similar measure failed three years ago because council members couldn't come to a consensus on where the antennas could be allowed to go. Okay so so. What does the controversy over five. Gee there's a lot people don't like about it. One is just aesthetics five g. technology requires a lot more towers that are lower to the ground and closer together than the very tall for g. Towers were accustomed to other talk about climate effects. Five g. uses more energy than four g. Their concerns about how much control wireless companies have over where these things will go. And some worrying about radiation But the federal government says the frequencies are not harmful. I don't see the council voting this down. The main reason being that right now the county is out of compliance with fcc rules on five g. Governments are not allowed to impede the expansion of these networks. there's also economic development piece here five g. is expanding throughout our region leaders. Don't want the county to get left behind. And there's an equity issue because so many people who can't afford broadband internet or a home computer depend on wireless technology to go online. Yes the digital. Divide which became particularly urgent during the pandemic so reporters in the wmu newsroom. We'll be watching that tomorrow. And this isn't the only controversial issue being discussed in montgomery county. This week is far from it. The council's committee on planning housing and economic development is continuing to hold work sessions on proposed updates to the county's general plan that update is called thrive twenty fifty and similar to comprehensive plan which we've covered quite a lot. It lays out guidelines for development in the county over the next thirty years. The county's planning department put out. Its proposed update earlier this year. After months of public engagement but similar to the dynamic. We're seeing with five g. Again some homeowners in the county are saying this plan will lead to too much change out of control growth. They worry about impacts on single family neighborhoods. I will note. The general plan doesn't actually make any changes to zoning in the county is more of a roadmap to how the county adapts to population growth and the plan also received a lot of positive feedback from residents in a recent hearing. They liked its emphasis on density instead of sprawl. They like its focus on diverse housing types and affordability so committee members were holding the third work session on the plan today. And it's expected to get a vote sometime after the council returns from summer recess. I anticipate seeing more community activism around this well into the fall and we will definitely keep an eye on that story out of montgomery county this week as well as other stories from around the region. Fewer than four hundred thousand people in their twenties or fully vaccinated compared to almost six hundred thousand in their fifties. Some young people are trying to close that gap by talking up the vaccine to their peers and their families w. a. amuse margaret bartell's spoke with to safety ambassadors working with the nonprofit identity in montgomery county stefan. Omegna and paolo romero. Both are twenty one years. Old romero spoke through an interpreter. Tell me about when you got vaccinated. What did the moment feel like and we can start with you. Steffano got vaccinated during during the month of june and he was a really good experience like thought it was going to be worse but it was. It ended up being really nice. It just felt a little pain in the arm but that was pretty much and just a little fever but that lasted like a day. I was hoping to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Paolo would fight. You know you're coning. And miss the maiyo romy. I got vaccinated in may and i was pregnant at the time so i was a little concerned about the vaccine at first but then i decided to get vaccinated because i knew it would protect me and my baby and i wanted us to be able to reintegrate into society and do the things we were normally doing. Why did you decide to become a safety ambassador. And what's your favorite part of the job. So my favorite part of the job is basically being able to help other people and inform other people about the vaccine telling them that it's okay to get vaccinated that you're not gonna get any sort of chip or you're not gonna get like the virus from getting vaccinated your huddled up for so. I wanted to be a safety ambassador. Because i wanted to be able to provide information to use in my community and also to represent us during this job. I've been able to give information to both youth and also to older people. Who needed it about the vaccinations. And i really like being able to help out community paula. Do you have friends or family members who aren't vaccinated. And why do you think that is. The ami suitable is the amigos community side body sal in her circle of friends and family. There are several who have not been vaccinated and the main reasons the give is because they're scared or because they believe in the conspiracy theory that there's a chip and so they don't want to get vaccinated. What strategies have worked. Well for you in your job as an ambassador in convincing people to get vaccinated pretty much just telling them my experience in my close friends experience of getting the vaccine telling them that the most you can feel. It's a little sore in the in the arm. And the second is you get a little fever for like a day or something but in the end is really worth it so you can protect yourself on your family. I'm curious how much difficulty accessing the vaccine kind of plays into people's fears or concerns about it like if it's hard to get to a clinic because you gotta take the bus and take the day off. How much of that are you finding that. It's hard to get people to do it. Just because there are these barriers in the way so the most like common thing that they tell me is that they you're scared because they don't have like money or they don't have a health insurance so i tell them like most of the places do it for free and you don't have to present any kind of insurance or like documents. Us have to bring your. Id for for them. Their records see them being listed. Commit worry about having to give up a.

The suburbs are far more diverse than they were decades ago, and many suburban voters had an intense dislike of Donald Trump Republican create A V is hoping some of those more moderate voters come back to the GOP. "All right. Thanks, Rita, Kelly almost hate to do this, because I think he could maybe could put it away for Friday and Kelly stupid. Now, first of all, you guys have to go to the Montgomery County sheriff's departments Facebook page to actually see this thing. But the Montgomery County sheriff's department deputy pulled over a guy in Amsterdam this week and he saw an inspection sticker made out of construction paper and handwritten. All the months and they have the punch for the month. The inspection expires at all that. So the Montgomery County sheriff's department posted the copy the sticker along with the message. So we appreciate people who take some initiative. However, this will not work as your vehicle inspection sticker. Nice. Try. It's larry. So they arrested a guy thirty five year old guy from Amsterdam Manuel, new knees. He faces a violation vehicle was not registered obviously. And so the, you know, originally, I mean it doesn't it's not very well done, but I will say this, it might have been it might have been affective if you're just passing a cop from a long distance away. It looks like the red sticker, you know. So maybe also do the same thing if your inspection sticker was expired. You know you can't tell cars passing whether the inspection is expired. Yep. Got the date on it. But I mean the colors for the years. Maybe they way expired it was way. So this is so it'll give you a laugh. I'm sure he's not laughing much, but Montgomery County sheriff's department Facebook page for the handwritten sticker. Another rally yesterday at the in Albany for giving licenses to people who are not citizens here. You know, I'm really at a loss now this, this team this movement because we have a lot of downstate legislators, and the Democrats control the state legislature, and the governor's office right now Kelly, but I got the sense that this thing was going to happen now. I'm not so sure. Yeah. I mean I don't know why we're still having this debate. I mean that just opened the door to so many problems in terms of Audra identity theft, and I mean, what's the incentive for people even become citizens? Now, I know we're going to give them all like all the benefits of living in the United States. We'll give you scholarships. Get your license live to be bothered. Yeah. So there's the Republican lawmakers who, again, really aren't in control that they do have some sway, and they can also you know, I think that the, the surveys, the polls show that the public doesn't want this. It's not a matter of hate. I don't think maybe look at there's always some percentage of haters and bigots, but I think a lot of people just feel like it is legitimate security issue, and that also the price of citizenship, and the people who do it the right way shouldn't be disrespected in that fashion. So, so anyway, there's a big rally their supporters argue middle deal to help people, and they'll be more inclined to get insurance. And whatever word that said against that we've met made are up. Positions pretty clear in recent weeks. You got you and your husband you've gotten if you upgraded, your driver's licenses Kelly, I God, that's a bad Linden also. And it's a little bit of a process, speaking of which unless you're maybe a legal. It'd be a lot easier. But did you guys what did you end up with? You have the real idea in the enhanced we did, too. It's the it's the most expensive ones thirty bucks more than the real I d. But for the we're simplifying it, you really you're going to need to fly. Even domestically the rely ID, right? The enhanced does it gets you border crossings in Canada. I mean not see if you can't cross the ocean and go into, you know. Ireland or whatever. Only go into Mexico and I got the enhanced. I mean it's valid for longtime. It's only thirty bucks more and, you know, if I let's say we go to Canada fairly often, so if I forgot my passport, at least, I have it now. And so, but you have to jump through a few hoops, documentation wise to get that, you know. Yeah. And you have to show. I mean if you go to the DMV website, which I strongly recommend you, it will give you a checklist from each category. At you need your social security card. You need like a utility Bill. You need a whole lot of different things that you wouldn't normally have needed before, although Roger lessons poll wallet. So you're like, what do you wanna show have association but you keep your social security card in your wallet? He's like not anymore. I don't keep minor. No fire. Fire retardant thoughts. Yeah. So the deal is you're gonna have to deal with it. Unless you never wanna fly again, this is even domestic flights. You have until October of twenty twenty and let's face it, there's going to be a run. The guy at the envy, was telling us. You know I it's busy now where do you see what happens come October? It's going to be crazy next October next October. Right. And, you know, like the six months leading up to go be insane. You know, even if you have time left on your license, I'd just, just do it because you're going to be you're going to have to do it, and it's going to be a living. Hell at the time. I saw Syracuse TV stations at a follow up report. Our license plates are still feeling like crazy. I mean mine is fine. I don't know why mine is better with Rogers, but his is a mess. Is it really fine too? But they're still having big problems. They had problems with the old white ones. Now at the orange ones, I don't know. I don't mean to say, like you know this day and age. Put a man on the moon. We can't get a license plate that doesn't peel fleas, and obviously your, this is your warning. Again, the state announced they're doing their stock DWI crackdown for the long holiday weekend all throughout the region. The, the checkpoints etcetera will be begin on Friday and then running right through Tuesday. So there's your official warning Chuck and Kelly's six forty one. My team is turning the tide.
