The US Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights says the professor did sexually harass female students by having them remove their shirts then commenting on their bodies as they sat there in their bras. "Down to the 50s later. Good evening, I'm Dimitri Sotis with the top local stories we're following this hour. We have a couple of breaking developments. A young child has died after a fall from an Alexandria apartment tower. We'll have the latest on that in less than a minute. first, But we've got to tell you that we are now under a code red air quality alert that is unhealthy air for everyone. The Council of Governments and Seven News say we'll also be under code red air quality all day tomorrow. For most of this day, we were coping with code orange air quality, less severe. It affects sensitive groups, including those with heart and lung problems and asthma. This is all being caused by the smoke from still raging Canadian wildfires, hundreds of them. Stay with WTOP for the full forecast. Now to our other big story. A toddler lost life this afternoon from an apartment. It happened in Alexandria shortly after two, after the child fell from the high rise. WTOP's Mike Morillo with more. Our condolences goes out to the family. Alexandria Police Chief Don Hayes on the heartbreaking scene. First responders found at an apartment complex on Yoakum Parkway. It comes after a top advisor to the mayor resigned under a cloud of scandal. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau has introduced a bill that would involve a third party when comes it to sexual harassment complaints like those filed against former Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio. Any mayoral appointee being accused would trigger an outside investigation. Her goal, she says, is to promote transparency. And so what this bill does is say to our employees, we want you to have trust in the process that you will get the outcome that is fair and just for you. Mayor Mario Bowser has asked DC's Inspector General whether an outside review is needed and to look at whether government sexual harassment policies should be updated following the accusations against Falcicchio, which also included bullying and retaliation. Melissa Howell, WTOP News. Attorneys for one of the women accusing Falcicchio of harassment are out with a new statement and a demand of the mayor. They say they strongly urge Mayor Bowser to consider an independent investigation by the DC Attorney General instead of tapping the Inspector General. They say the IG's office is an executive branch agency which promotes its independence, but does report to the mayor. In sharp contrast, they say the DC Attorney General was elected by the citizens of the nation's capital. A title binds sexual harassment investigation into a local professor is wrapped up. The US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights was investigating accusations of sexual harassment by a professor at Montgomery College's Tacoma Silver Spring campus. Students said that he had told female students to remove their shirts and only wear bras as part of a medical assessment training, and then he made comments about their appearance. The professor was eventually fired. The Department of Education found that the school complied with Title IX requirements by conducting a prompt investigation, but the college didn't do enough to inform impacted students about steps they were taking to address what happened. The Supreme Court of Maryland is going to hear an appeal from Adnan Syed whose conviction for killing an ex -girlfriend became the subject of the popular serial podcast. He was freed from prison last year after Baltimore prosecutors found flaws in the evidence presented at trial and a judge agreed to vacate his conviction, but he had spent more than two decades behind bars at that point. Relatives of Hay Min Lee appealed, arguing they didn't receive notice enough to attend the hearing that set Syed free. In March the Maryland Appellate Court agreed and reinstated Syed's conviction. As the case proceeds, Syed will remain free, but there's a chance he could ultimately return to prison, depending on the outcome. "Williams, president of Nassau community college, and a first generation college student himself. I must add sensitive time I recorded this episode, Jermaine has been named the president of Montgomery college, a community college located in Montgomery county, Maryland. And I congratulate him and I wish him well. But let me tell you, if you're going to start a podcast about helping parents become future college parents, why not go straight to the top and get an actual college president? Jermaine and I were first introduced several years ago through a professional organization. We're both members of. He's one of the smartest people I've ever met and is all about providing access and equity to higher education. I couldn't think of anyone better to start the show out with. Now, before we get on to our conversation, I want to provide a disclaimer and know lawyers were not involved in this one. But I want listeners to know that I am not a seasoned interviewer and audio technician or a social media expert. But what I am is an educator who only wants to help arm parents with information to help their students period. And I'm asking that as I begin this journey and as we begin this journey, that you please focus on the content and not the delivery and I promise that I'll get better. And now here's my interview with Jermaine. Welcome to the future college parent podcast. Thank you so much for being here and helping future parents, future college parents, and thank you for being one of our first 6 guests. You are a guest number one for our 6 episode premiere of the future college parent podcast. Thanks, Jermaine. It is an absolute pleasure. Thank you for having me. I'm very excited to be with you today. Well, let's jump right into it. Fantastic. Can you share with us what about your journey from high school to college? Do you think informed the past that you're on now? The resources that came with my journey and realizing the individuals who helped me along the way and that's really what has informed where I am now knowing that those resources were so essential and so much more than I thought I would ever need to successfully transition. So what type of resources are your folks, your school, absolutely? That's one of the great things about the podcast Justin and why I'm so excited to be here is because I didn't even know what those resources were when I was transitioning as a first generation college student. It's not only until I reflect back and think about that given my time and higher education professionally that I identify what was important and you started to hit the nail right on the head. You know, community resources from my church to my coaches. Teachers to the counselors who were in colleges. There was so many resources and such connectivity with a large array of individuals and groups. I didn't even I didn't even expect I would need all that support to successfully transition and looking back. I realized that all that support was absolutely critical for successful transition. Tell me, if you don't understand, or you don't have a sense or your parents don't necessarily have a sense of the processes. How can colleges respond to parents in that scenario or that situation? From my lived experience as a first generation.
