"It when, you know, I think there were parts of it that I wasn't a fan of, but I understand that if you're committing potentially hundreds of millions of dollars like Julio Rodriguez, like that might be there might be something to that contract, right? Like it might be kind of complicated, but it's my cool walk. Yeah, I understood with green because of the uncertainty that he'll be back and how good he'll be and all of that. And I guess with waka, there's always a little bit of uncertainty about health, but not in as acute away as there was with green. So I don't know. Suddenly, it's just these modest contracts are incredibly complicated. It seems, anyway, Padres somehow squeezing another player onto their ever expanding roster. And it also came out that they are now it seems like going to be switching over from a revenue sharing recipient to a revenue sharing payee. So because their revenue has increased so much and because they expect it to increase so much more with more ticket sales and sponsorships, et cetera. So it does turn out that you do have to spend money to make money or at least that is one way you can do it. So I don't know whether that pays for the spending that they've done on the free agent market and on the trade market and everything if you're doing just an annual budget, but it does go to shows that even in a modest media market, if you invest in your team and everyone gets super excited about it, granted there aren't as many alternative pro teams and said, yeah, go for people to get excited about, but still, Padres fans are excited about the Padres and I would be too if my team were allowed to roster 49 players. Yep, as Stephanie Epstein said, small market is a state of mind. Exactly. Yeah. I hope, by the way, that we'll get some news at some point about fewer blackouts in MLA TV, speaking of MOP TV, because it does sound like that's a priority now, rob Manfred made some statements about how that is a priority for the league. And we will see their hints are tied to some extent, but as we discussed recently with all the valleys possible bankruptcy situation, perhaps they'll be able to claw back some rates and show us more games because that'd be really nice too. If we could pay for MLB TV and also watch all the games on there, that would be great too. At least the ones that are not split up into 7 other streaming services. Yeah, I mean, I have so many streaming services now. And because I like poker face, I have another. I haven't used to have Ben. And so I feel overwhelmed by that. Well, people tend to churn them now. They just want to watch one show. As they signed up for a month and they binge that and then they let their subscription lapse. So there's a lot of turnover these days as people are trying to juggle several streaming services. So there's something that happens when spring training starts, which is it's very exciting and everyone shows up and then you start getting injury news pour in so whether it's a gram feeling some soreness or it's Frankie montas of the Yankees possibly going to miss the entire season or it's Steven Strasburg having another setback. It's like there's this Schrodinger's injury thing that happens like before pitchers report before players show up and start to do things that sometimes injure them or you find out about preexisting injuries. You can just sort of dream and fantasize about the season and look at who you got and then reality sets and when spring training starts and this guy's shoulder hurts and that guy's elbow hurts and often these things as you're ramping up for the regular season workload. That is when things tend to break or you realize that something you hoped would have healed over the off season didn't and that's why we see so many Tommy John surgeries or injuries that lead to John surgeries tend to crop up in spring training. So it's a combination of the optimism of renewal of spring and it's a fresh start and then almost immediately there's just an onslaught of sad depression goose too. So you can't have one without the other, I suppose. Yeah, it is a bummer, but you know it's like the 60 day IL opens up and you gotta tell people when people are hurt so you can start moving guys over there not the gram is going on the 68. Not saying that. Isn't what I'm saying, but part of it is that there is this option available to teams now that they can move guys there who are injured in more substantial ways than Jacob de Grom, who was, it sounds like just soaring cold, you know? And who hasn't been sore and cold or sore because of colts. So there's that piece of it too, where it's like, what did we get to put a guy on the 60 day and that opens up a roster spot for us? And now we can go sign a veteran to an overly complicated deal for no reason. Right. Yeah, I've been with the Padres specifically, they don't have to worry about the raster spots as much as everyone else does. Because they have like 90s what we've established. Exactly. They got a special exemption. So we've got a guest today, and it's a recurring guest, a favorite of ours at pal, Evan drellich, who is a newly published author of a very fine book about baseball called winning fixes everything, how PS bar's brightest mains created sports biggest mess. And then they ended by scoring three combined runs. Look, they faced Frankie montas on Saturday who very good pitcher. 10 years on, Michle Montas recalls the day no Haitian can forget
"In the days following the earthquake ten years ago that killed around two hundred twenty thousand Haitians. The sounds of praying shouting. Not yelling filled the streets and a sense that this was the end of the world. Well that's one of the powerful memories from survivor. Michele Montas that former UN spokesperson who just returned turned home to live in her native country when disaster struck within hours she was working with the UN peacekeeping mission Nusa helping coordinate a huge international aid effort it the UN having lost one hundred and two of its own staff on that fateful day to mark the tenth anniversary this week she spoke to News Christina Silvio one aftershock after the other the initial one was in my house and lived with I saw the walls being just cracking. We all went out to nobody. Stayed in the houses of Forego `about to three nights. I spent a fulling three nights with a group of a school children in a Catholic nuns who across the street from me and nobody will go inside buildings and dissents that listening to people praying shouting yelling with the sense that this was the end of the world and that will not can that really marked me and we'll stay with me rest of my life. We realized how many people impacted only the following shoe days. The following is that's when I was called to join minister so I was retired from the UN. So I thought and I I was glad to join minister because dealer the only one we're capable of actually playing the coordinating role to help the aid. That was pouring into Haiti. Can you talk a bit about what it was like that first response and the rescue and the emergency response what was it like. Government was just is functioning inside a police station and the His government could not react had no means to react and the UN was there to actually get that aid even to the where troops coming from the US from Canada from different country are just arriving but it the first responders where people from the UN troops from the UN who actually were helping to dig people out of the rubble. We're we're helping also to evacuate people had been wounded and helping the medical teams coming into Haiti to set up emergency clinics in the street. That's where people were had to be amputated where had to be then transported to hospitals. They were not hospitals was that were really makeshift ones because the real hospitals had collapsed fifty centers in hospitals collapse. That day and there was no way that he's an infrastructure. Could take those people and do you. Employ extraordinary role in evacuating. Some people. Were actually as soon as it was possible. Possible to fly them out to fly them to different places where it could be taken care of the wounded even though the UN had also itself itself been hit quite hard yes the UN was was still trying to get people out of the rubble over the Christopher hotel we lost the UN lost one hundred and two people pulled that day and the people who were from the civilian mission. We've been working in that hotel in new almost vicky few people actually managed to get Out Alive. How long did that emergency response last in terms of the organization until it became less of an emergency response and more into to rebuilding? It took a while to it took a while because even rebuilding was done on a temporary basis. I we had a tense. For the people we thought lodging then we had a temporary lodging that were built we had camps that had to be installed with water supply and it took civil civil civil months while I would say up to six months before actually you know people could be taken care of six months in which they are to be taken care of the camps to be set up the food had to be distributed. Water was a great problem. The distribution of water and Dominica. Help all these where everything was urgent. Everything meanwhile the aid was being flown in could not cog was clogged into the airport report and to get that out to people who needed it took weeks and weeks. They were number of NGOs there and I have to say a lot of them came. Would you know wanting to help but not always knowing how to help. And that's a good thing that the UN was was there with the infrastructure. The agents for UNICEF was there all the agencies of the United Nations were there within the civilian mission. They were not at that building collapsed but they were able to react pretty fast into of a helping with the water with food and with the emergency response wants. What was it like for you to go through such a catastrophe and and live through it? What does that brought you? Well I think it marked my life and is very difficult to forget it. I don't think I will ever forget it. I don't think any Haitian can forget it. Every time they reverse we like the tenth anniversary three there was a fifth anniversary was marked. People can tell you exactly where the where when he happened. They can tell you exactly what we're doing they can tell you who the lost and in what circumstances they can tell you about you know waiting for hours for your loved one to be taken out of rebels they can tell you with great precision season and I can tell you we quit precision When I got friends out when I had to go tools when I saw buddies bodies being dumped in trucks and being taken to make shift a grave?
