"The West Virginia was on the road all the time. Oh yeah. Morgan found the home of West Virginia university. Yeah. And in fact, one of your guests that you're going to have on your show is the former colonel of state police Tom Kirk. And I'll just give the audience a heads up on him is he called me and said, are you one of those guys that investigate the money from narcotics? And I said, yes, sir. He says, would you meet me in a night and I said, well, okay, tell me when. Where and when, he says, tonight, 11 p.m. at the West Virginia university coliseum. And I said, well, how will I know how to find you? He says, no, no, no, no. I will find you. So you think you were getting set up at this point like somebody's going to roll you as a case. Needless to say, the gun was out. The gun was out. So I'm there and I'm in my G car, which is a Buick, one of those first front wheel drive buicks that they had in Skylar. And all of a sudden this green Chrysler Cordoba pulls up. And this car I mean, it looks like you had been in one of these when the high school kids take a sledgehammer and you can pay a dollar to beat on it. So he says, you, the IRS guy, and I said, yeah, and he said, get in. Well, I get in the car, the door was broken. Broken. And in fact, in the headliner was so rotten, I had to drive around Morgantown with my hand up holding the headliner on the cards I could see. And that was West Virginia's first take home car for their state police, right? Trust me, that fine Corinthian leather was more rotten than you could imagine. I'm shocked Richmond. Ricardo montalban sang about that on his commercials about the rich couldn't the leather. I know, I know, yeah, that was at his retirement party. Needless to say, I brought that up. He was so well respected. I said, why didn't you just rip the headliner out? And he says, that took away from the mystique of my Colombians. Yeah. I got to take a quick story about Tom, because we were scheduled. Morgan and I were scheduled to interview Tom this morning, and we're interviewing Jeff this afternoon, and of course on listeners, don't care about that. But I had to postpone because some concrete trucks were here at our house and they were making a lot of noise and don't say concrete trucks. You're putting your pool in the backyard with the big slide, aren't you? That would be nice about it. All right. So anyway, Tom and I got in a conversation after I got a hold of him and said, listen, we got to postpone it. And he's very gracious. And we got to talk about him working undercover. Narcotics when he was with me state police is just a truth. You know, he's a road trooper..

"Things did to that series. I haven't seen halloween kills yet Jeff tells me that it's brutal but doesn't really offer anything in in the in terms of being must see material by any means as such now bloom house drops and other effort and it's a lands again with the definite third and that's a bloom houses fantasy island. This is a movie that reminds me of a two thousand eleven two thousand twelve. Uk of oracle panic button and in that one the for users of social media sites called altogether arrive at a uk departure terminal as they're obviously contest winners and they come with their bags packed and ready to collect on a contest winnings which is a all expenses paid trip to new york city. This crew is all excited. They're all you know Part of this in the nascent at the time social media boom and they're just pup posting all over the place but how wonderful trips gonna be and they're given champagne and elihu ride onto the tarmac and they they board a luxury jet and they're all ready to go nuts and have just a wild old time and of course things to take a terrible turn. Bloom houses. Fantasy island is a similar concede where you have a bunch of contest winners. Who arrive at this. Just gorgeous locale in the middle of the caribbean and There's the sweeping vistas and this a panorama of the views of akwa blue waterson and towering peaks and lush jungles. And it just looks like absolute paradise and makes you wonder really because obviously the titles blouses fantasy island right or maybe it's not so obvious but fantasy island was one of these. Really beguiling mystifying. In fever dream. Inducing projects and willis things. It was something my my grandma used to watch along with the love boat. And all this sort of mystifying. Very strange television. That came out in. I don't even know when it was the seventies and eighties. And in the case of the love boat it follows the antics of this crew aboard this carnival cruise type ship and various the comings and goings of various denizens. They're on and people going to different caribbean destinations and falling in love and losing their luggage. And i think those were the only plot points throughout the whole thing is just baffling. That would be something people would watch again when you're limited in your options them. I was watching a series about how the film business has changed. And it used to be that you would guess pitch one to seven different networks on your shows and then you would do it sequentially after you got rejected by one you would go to the next to the next to the next until you finally run out options now there's at least seventy to eighty different platforms. That would accept programming. That and fantasy island was about this suave debonair figure who really replay by ricardo montalban would grant people wishes and where these impeccable white linen suits. Just wander around this gorgeous locale. And i just don't know why that was popular but i can get a i guess a certain appreciation of the desire to when you release a movie to have something based on a pre existing property..

Look at this guys. Look at his chess or cleavages guy is he's he's supposed to be genetically engineered right and like super smart. Yeah the only the only thing is like when you write yourself when you write a character supposed to be super smart. And then the entire movie he just gets outsmarted by kirk. I was like how smart. He's smart was. Offer the fucking lie about how long to fix the thing. He fell for that he felt i he. He chased them foolishly into the because he's hot headed and he just like let his personal like is a very smart taking the genesis and just like ruling the world. He like just uses his personal vendetta against kirk like cloud everything he's doing. Yeah he's obsessed. He's obsessed scripture thing is rugs. Correct me if i'm wrong. But montalban played kahn in nineteen sixty seven episode star trek which was fifteen years earlier. And says i've been yeah. I've been hunting for him for fifteen years. No no to your point yes. I don't have that sort of logic problem that to like no. Where where's this because the idea ideas you take dead planet real planet because that's planted out of you don't make a planet out of a nebula. That's not what the film told me early. I'm cool with all five star. Trek's doesn't matter so he sets it off and much like my favorite movie into darkness. Something's wrong with the warp core and the only way to save it is if somebody goes down there and fix it and this and this one. This is ripping off into darkness in a huge. A huge problem for me honestly spot goes down there in this. Come on glad you brought it up. I'm glad you're saying something the The shot of spark like realizing what he has to do and making the decision knowing full well the consequences and just getting up and leaving the bridge without saying anything. Yeah fuck is that awesome. It is so what a moment of heroism in this movie. It's like well fuck it. I'm going to die today. He goes down there. Scott his the fuck umaga do So chaves doohan is breathing in the biz fucking respirator mask like he's just run a marathon he bones like a cat. Go at that spot. Yes the nerve pitch and then he gives them the which apparently was a re-shoot because they wanted to like yeah give theirselves a way out. Which i don't think is super. I mean it works but it's not super necessary like but i feel as magic is. I feel like it's this movie. So smarts hadn't this all up because it's like if i'm just watching this not knowing search for spock. It's like while that's that but like it's amazing that these little nuances add those ways out. "Should decide. They thought that means that the front door of the restaurant was closed. You had to walk around the building. Meanwhile there's this elderly couple right behind them and as they're walking why they still go. Those doors are broken. You need to go out of this. Elderly couple walks the entire loop around. Pf changs small guys like ambling down there and she got there and then realize what she got in that it was just the right door that was well can so i get. It was very a little bit. That's a weird message because if you open one and it doesn't open you're going to naturally go to the left side throws you off so yeah so it's interesting to me to know. This is a personality thing. That good or bad doesn't matter If the thing says doors closed or use other door. I'm still pulling on it. "I could sit in front of the computer during lab today. I remember that. I remember being psyched. That there was some type of video game element with school and it really it enhance the experience and made my interest example. So you know what i find. Funny steve like this whole thing about whether or not video games are safe like to the vast majority of gamers. We already know the answer. You know like they had it to me. There was a. There's like a fear based element. That people were being driven by like. Oh it's bad. It's going to introduce weird thoughts in the kids heads. Whatever like just like bad music. Remember the whole labeling thing in the eighties it's like satanic panda all over again video game panic absolutely total. Gosh all right bob. I've been hearing a lot of news recently about the formation of the milky way galaxy. Just one news item. But you're going to tell us about hard. Yeah i haven't heard anything about that all right so. Researchers have recently used a new stellar technique to confirm the timing when our milky way galaxy essentially became the milky way galaxy billions of years ago this was published in the journal nature astronomy. And so i wanna know. I'll start with a question. What's everyone's favourite galaxy. Quick quick thirty one. See it through to the milky way. To where i keep my stuff. I liked beetlejuice star. Well yeah it's got to be the milky way or at least top three right because we live here but there are scientists that look at the history and development of galaxies and it is the most epic job title. I've ever heard galactic. Archaeologists said awesome. So what do you do love galactic archaeologist. I mean what. Oh my god. So they basically reconstruct the past events they look at the history of galaxy to put together. What happened to it. And so this is what was happening for this news item and this also includes galaxy mergers galaxies merge all the time. And that's to be an important part something that You know a galactic archaeologist is going to have to look into and the most important one apparently happened ten billion years ago now. We've the milky milky way swallowed multiple different smaller Galaxies in the past that we found evidence for this one was looks like it was the most important so imagine ten billion years ago. You've got a progenitor galaxy and you have this satellite galaxy in orbit around each other. Now the progenitor is four times more massive than than than the smaller one and it's more metal rich now. I tried to find out the name of the progenitor galaxy. No name any name. And i thought that was really sad so jay. I'm naming it frank to our progenitor galaxy was frank. That'll take off. Yes oh it absolutely will now. The satellite galaxy was called. They call it. They gave it a name. It's called guy enceladus or it has another name that i'm going to use and this is legit name. It's called guy sausage guy sausage and that's yes it is it absolutely is on. And that's because if you if you look at the data from the guy at mission. The dana looks like an elongated sausage. So that that name of a lot of things look like sausage white sauce it. They could have picked a worse far worse name. I think guy. Talia is better sausage. A little it's more lovely. I like that okay. Guy valley it is so guy. Failure was dwarf galaxy slightly more massive than the small magic cloud and this is a quote from josephina montalban who led the project. She said the merging event with guy and sell. It is thought to be one of the most important in the milky ways. History shaping how we observe it today. She's right obviously because she's a scientist and she knows what she's talking about but what happened. Was that this merger. At a a lot of real estate they calculate at least eight globular clusters along with fifty billion solar masses of stars guests and dark matter so this was a huge bam. Here you go bolles of of matter and energy for the four frank but to do that to actually know all this stuff. They had to employ a new technique called astro seismology. I hadn't of this before. It's not astro. Seismology it's astro. Ast should they got a good reason for that. So what astro seismology does studies stellar interiors. It could examine the oscillations within stars the sound waves that move the bounce around back and forth on the inside and with it you can find out a lot of stuff about about the star. They combine that technique with spectroscopy to see what elements are in the star as well so in their study they looked at one hundred old red giant stars red giant stars a hundred of them and they found out that a bunch of them were alien stars. That came from guy. Sausage or guy talia real. But i like it now. In general in general these guy thallium stars were younger little bit younger and they have different orbits than stars. That were from frank. Now if you if you want to look at the milky way now if you look at it now so what. Can you see today that you know that was the impact that we were the ramifications of this huge merger. So if you look at a lot of the stars of the core of the milky way they came from the original progenitor frank but if you look at if you look at if you look at the diffuse halo of stars around around the galaxy around the milky way those from guy guy italia and if you end the stars in general you can say generally that the stars have different trajectories and also the merger of these. Two galaxies thickened the milky. Way's disk. And i think that's because of the because of all the gas all the gas. I came crashing together because you know during a galactic merger. The stars don't hit. It's all about the gas so about the gas sound kind of like i've got so much gas. My disc is thickening a lot of that at all but but all that gas crashing together of course causes caused stellar nurseries to pop up and start that. Don't worry all right. So what's going to happen in the future and the future. They're going to look at a lot more stars. They're going to measure them using astro seismology and spectroscopy and get even more detailed.

Case you don't know it's about guess who visited Mysterio mysterious Tropical Island to live out their fantasies for a price. There was a big screen version of it, but it was very strange. I watched a little bit of it. It was nothing like the TV show at all. It was kind of morbid. Fox says they've created a contemporary adaption for the Today's times, huh? Did you ever watch it? I did not know was I didn't think you were around. But it was an okay show. But I look Ricardo Montalban is dead and little hurt Village as is dead, So they're gonna have to have somebody else and well, they still have the you know, the beginning with the plane. And you couldn't go through an entire year without Adrienne Barbeau being on it, which I had no problem with whatsoever. It'll be interesting. I mean, they keep reinventing the same thing over and over and not always for the best, either. All right Charity. What else is happening?.

"From Bentley School, where students in kindergarten through 12th grade can develop a deep intellectual curiosity and profound awareness of their responsibilities. A citizen's virtual Open house Saturday November 7th. Info at Bentley School board that look at the final push to get out the letter. Next vote for November's election is ahead in the final segment of the world. A good harvest, of course, depends on the climate. And with the climate changing a lot more crops aren't gonna grow well where they are grown now. Farming on a warming planet Next time on marketplace, stay with us for marketplace. It comes on a four o'clock this afternoon. And then we'll have a repeat broadcast this evening at 6 30 here on 88.5 San Francisco in 89.3, North Island, Sacramento. Hi, Marco Woman you're with the world two weeks now to Election Day, and campaigns are urgently trying to get out the vote, but the push to get more Latinos registered to vote that's been going on for decades. Sublets from Eagle Ricardo Montalban or not, but I mean actor Ricardo Montalban back in the 19 eighties, telling people vote gives us the voice We need 30 years later, Latinos are the second largest ethnic voting block in the US Writer Michelle Garcia's looked into this and joins me from New York City. So you've pointed out that Latinos they're still building a legacy of their own When it comes to the vote. What do you mean by legacy? Right? So remember the photo of the congressional representatives women all dressed in white. That was to mark the passage of the 19th amendment that gave white women the right to vote a century ago this year. Black voters understood within the context of their long civil rights, struggle and effort to get to the ballot box, many of which also benefited Latinos. There's little context for Latino voters. Most people are not taught that Latinos to had to face literacy test poll taxes. This context is important for understanding that when Latinos turn out to the polls represents the overcoming of decades of suppression and neglect. You know, Michelle, So much of the narrative is about how a candidate reaches the Latino voters. Or, as they say, the Latino vote. What should we be paying attention to? Instead? I spoke with Frances Negron Moon there who's innocent. See a professor at Columbia University, and she told me that Latino context is often working and coalition. For example, Puerto Rican is working with African Americans in New York and Chicago. She said that Latinos have contributed to the political history of this country with movements around labor. Gender and immigration to see Latino voters and the multiple movements that Latinos have organized reframes the voting story, and it becomes a constellation of stories. And I think that's very frightening before some people, particularly those that benefit from the current arrangements of power. Because he had multiple stories and you have multiple perspectives. Then you would have to, you know, be a totally different relationship between groups. That's Frances Negron, speaking with my guest, Michelle Garcia. So what? We've seen how the political system has ignored Latinos, which is partly why they face constant suppression of the polls. Yet candidates are always seeking their vote at some point in their campaigns. What needs to change here? I spoke with Irene Godliness from the North Carolina group all dead end. See We're no longer that transient community that People thought we were going to be. We're not going anywhere. We are North Carolinians, and we are carving out. Space for ourselves in North Carolina politics and in the landscape in general, because we have long been ignored, have long been taken for granted and With our organizations were saying Not anymore..

"All right. So in this episode we're going to dive into you know, something that we all have a vested interested in and something that I think we can all have some fun in bed and talked about how the brown Community is being portrayed in in movies. And in the media. Yeah, I think that's a really good issue to talk about because you know, there's a lot of us out there. One of the things that comes out is like the stereotypes of good or bad, you know good or bad kind of hobby. Yeah, because like when you look at like old movies older movies, like when Mexicans were in that they had like typical roles and they they never had leading roles. Well, you know what? I mean, I guess it was like Ricardo Montalban, you know, Ricky Ricardo. I mean those were some that were not typical but for the most part when they had Mexicans or Latinos, they were just like dead. Made like the I want to ask guess as we dive into this, this is the beginning I want to ask like why is this an important topic owning? I think about this is almost like a bridge episode to our previous episode. We were talking about black lives matter and how people of color are being portrayed in the media on the screen. I think that has a an impact on how Society sees us last week. We focused on on the black life matter today. We're focussing on Latinos and the images that are portrayed on on the on big screen and on the small screen currently as well or eccle and there are stereotypes of Latinos were pretty much treated and in basically three or four respects, you know, we're dead. If you're a woman, you're either highly sexualized or you're made if you're a male your way. We're basically portrayed as sexual predators, you know, where we might be portrayed as being criminals. We might be portrayed as being unintelligent dog gardeners or the hell and yeah, you know and and then if this is what people see and then you have politicians who play on this and then they use these stereotypes and sometimes specifically use rolls that that are the big screen as caricatures of all Latinos. This is you know, this is a serious issue, you know, yeah, you know, we go to the movies to you know to get away from home. Aldi but when I see a Latino being portrayed in the stereotypical ways, I can't get away from reality. You know, it's like hitting me in the face again off.

"In nineteen forty nine for use in the film Neptune's daughter she sure can't Ricardo Montalban and Esther Williams singing the duet when Williams character initially wants to stay after realizing she's falling in love with multiple character despite her best efforts not to put recognizes what people will think of her if she does yeah I really can't get a hold on John I got to go away it's cold outside she isn't forced to stay or stays only because of Malta binds characters badgering it's because she wants to later in the film the song is sung again only this time by red Skelton and Betty Garrett it's time the roles are reversed and she is pursuing him now I get to be too obvious if I sat on his lap the entire scene is a long gag about how desperately she wants him with since he's pretending to be someone else he's desperately trying to get away they call and got away here it's character like Williams was the also sorting her independence her sexuality and her freedom to choose whom she wanted to love the movie was a success but baby it's cold outside was a smash hit and went on to win the academy award for Best Original Song when Johnny Mercer and Margaret whiting recorded a version later that year it became an even bigger hit on the radio especially at Christmas time because of its winter theme for decades this song was a Christmas staple without a hint of controversy surrounding it supposedly dark undertones because quite simply audiences didn't hear any the line say what's in this drink harkened back to a relatively common comedy bit in which a woman or a man pretends to be drunk to excuse their outlandish behavior that might violate societal norms of the time in fact it is this suppose in violation of societal norms regarding sexuality in the nineteen forties and fifties that underpins the song the woman is not desperately trying to get away from a predatory man she wants to stay with him what is thinking out loud about what various people in our life will say about her if she does my mother will start to worry she laments my father will be pacing the floor in the very next line she lets on that she really wants to stay in spite of what people might think of her so really I'd better scurry she states before quickly adding well maybe just a half a drink more worse is thrilled by this answering with with some records on well I pour that the next line is say what's in this drink is the tell that he didn't Speicher drink or anything like that he merely poured the drink that she asked for but she's pretending that she's just too drunk to be responsible for what she does next just as was common in broad comedies of the time the punch line to that joke was invariably that there was nothing in the drink the audience knows it and knows that the person who just under the line is doing well exactly what the woman in the song is doing rather poorly trying to justify her actions by pretending to be drunk and intentions couldn't be clearer she wants to stay in makes this rather obvious when she says I ought to say no no no at least I'm going to say that I tried she knows full well what society.
