Discussing Leading up to Breeder's Cup 2019 (With Scott Hazleton, Nick Luck, Gina Bryce, Frank Mirahmadi)
"Tasers plus i'm working came about ten years ago now i think it was wins and jato is still running goodyear to come i think she won the this stuff yeah and so i missed her agonizing defeat but yeah great to be back we mortar place kind of standing here thinking why do i live why do i live in the UK suv amen code and i i try to live here as much as i possibly can and you've been you've been stateside a ton the last several months skull and comparing notes as to how many days spent away from home this year i was beaten by you you will have someone nearly two hundred i think about one hundred twenty six months for me my very long suffering wife is just that if you need to pass assistant i'm happy to come along make the coffee whatever i'd say it's a pretty good gig you got going on out here on a day like today looking over the mountains perfect temperature top class horses cantering i you all is well with the world now and ideally from from here on in the next seventy two hours through saturday tonight get them all around safe and make this make this the the idyllic session that it should be the from from art lips god's ears as we say i wanted also to to the dubai experience right the last the last several years the the international i scott i mean lucky enough to where it we've got a royal ascot gina as well jeanine scott on the same royal ascot show now skull comes over and does a great job for fatigue as well then dubai and dubai together on on that show so yeah trips have been right i mean you can't get rid of me and to be honest with you our our our first encounter we always have we have this connection our first encounter which bad pinch is not here for this story because we're all together was the two thousand seven breeders cup at monmouth park it was my first big remote for HR TV it was was your first go second chauffeur ESPN yeah and it was lafitte lafitte was during the winter cycle presentations i show and we somehow not surprisingly found each other and managed to hang out more than a few times it was of course that week it was often oblique experience that we well saturday and sunday uh about friday and saturday but we're not talking about the weather though you're you guys were well the rain was what i call crying baby rain you think naturally has to stop but it never does danger this week that was is that was as frustrating a scenario as you'll ever going to have around racetrack it was gorgeous every single day that i got i got to meet scott hazelton think either third how i was blessed and we've not looked back since twelve years later here we are that was i i was there broadcasting for for me that was actually my first that was the first season of the show when i was alone was two thousand seven and broadcasting from from the from john heinz office that compound here and the show was four o'clock at that time four to seven so i was there all day and i basically ended up answering phones and helping people tickets and and really i was always met the days i that's one of my fondest memories let's get some let's get some thoughts and nick i always rely on you for international purposes however you've been covering all the lead ups so you know your opinions can go far beyond the the euro's but from an introductory stand point some of the horses this year that that are are kind of new and of course we had not a bayton switch but magical and up disappearing at the last minute and it was frustrating because she was ready to the sun aim she'd have been the marquee name as she'd been here given i welsh around last year and the season she's hiding she went on champions are champions weekend but she's not so on we go there isn't not substan- aim if you'd like to to hang the european challenge on but it scott some debt and there are plenty of hoses who legitimate i think probably the most interesting pair of horses is old persian and anthony van dyck see whether they can whether they can let down to bricks and mortar on the on the turf in the mile and a half race and whether they can expose any shortcomings in in bricks and mortar stamina i don't if you saw the clip on on twitter of me accosting chad yesterday it was a good natured exchange i said to my overcomplicating it he said you always complicate everything i think the the influence i was supposed to draw was that breaks it was just a good horse and i i think he'd be impervious to distance but i i think there's a dealer confidence in the ballydoyle camper van dyken can step up i think you'll have to step up a bit even though he's won a dobby and finish that in an irish champion stakes i think he needs another little step foot but they seem to think he's had the perfect preparation and he's by no means an afterthought they've had this race lined up for him since the summer and that always when we get to this juncture very often we've talked about horses that at the last set again they said oh let's go and and those horses invariably don't run well exactly so it's it's great that he's he ain't going great record in the race he's probably comparable to one one or two of his winners atn equivalent stage of their career he's he's legitimate and i can't seem finishing out of the out of the front path really i said to michelle when i was chatting to a yesterday on on the TV gee breakfast show and i'll say it again if old persian doesn't get any love from the batter's he's probably worth passing because on his full from your last year and his form for made on earlier this year a mile and a half on firm turf he's a he's a very good host but he does need to take a leap forward from the canadian run which was just okay even though he won the triple digit bar though did he not a one can rier you can run fast but just there wasn't much depth to the race fair enough for the work that i want to bring up to is a lou neck the ville de mar hicks runner because if desert encounter doesn't make that spectacular run at woodbine doesn't doesn't he show up here with a little bit of a little i'm chad i'm chairman of the desert encounter fan club only only a really ardent admirer of his exploits think he would have any kind of a show in anna breeders cup too so i think he's a show plan alaniz maybe he's honest horse who has proven that he's effective in north america but i think that's about us boulder cases i can make fair enough at an eugene you sort of perked up at the mention of his name all right yeah i actually agree with nick on the on the breeders cup turf but i just saw time christmas go past this morning on friday i think that's pretty amend as a bit of a lottery that race and they're coming down the hill and you want to get a good break and be drawn well and and get on with proceedings but the europeans quite well drawn in that race seems to be quite a few in with chances is one that's really so stamped his authority on the five furlongs sprint division at home it's a nice little horse his knee and actually when you see him go past he's not going to take the i really but i think he could be quite interesting and he's in a good spot there archie watson does really well with his juvenile he's bringing over a runner and band practice i think it's been joined in two so you'd expect him to had to be sharp and out and and another one with a with a chance but i think the juvenile houses some sometimes the race is that europeans can can occasionally pinch on the turf and there's a few interesting ones this year lucky though that with it being it's a different this year because this is only the second year of the juvenile turf sprint they had but they didn't it wasn't consecrated until she was able to race on the on the go a bit but having it around the band i think that the wesley horses have the advantage of their speed they out of the gate they get that position on the turn and then while you know it's it's game over it's not what you know the european i used to i think camario win if she breaks she's i know that's the that's the if i honestly think she's she couldn't it took a role of keeneland didn't that it took a rule of the stretch kaitlyn and then they're not gonna come back here i don't think we saw last year pledges hose just came out and blasted a multiple that was a different type of course it was it was i guess but i i don't know i think she wins if she breaks success good chances we'll drive drive yeah it's interesting they've taken a ali to wolverhampton to try and chain around the bend and get used to that because you know they you say they all going to encounter different different conditions today sir friday and they've only been running on the straight it's tough five gallons they've had to practice changing awesome getting out quickly and coming around a bend if you were there's there's one thing that unites ceos like a ali in the juvenile turf sprint and a host like anthony van dyke in turf is that this fixture has been on the top of their agenda since the summer so you're talking about hostess who are being specifically targeted at the breeders cup there's to die yet would be another one in the long race for fillies on the turf the to your own race on the tough and raja verion before she even one and finish second on an island in the moya he was saying i want to go to california with an east had some success with osa finishing placed in breeders cup races before they they have three hoses who have been typically targeted at this fixture right from the word go this year

"With the heat you never know. Maybe maybe little we had as many as sixty one thousand American Pharaoh has had his little thirty five thousand but absent the heat. I would've expected forty forty five thousand but we'll see what well as always a pleasure to come here at been been watching keeping an either the meat has gone well allies you point out clearly between what's transpired on the gaming front and with the money that the state has has included a secure future that makes it easier to plan and just just couldn't be happier for that is for you and and everybody thank you very much. I know you've been a supporter from the start and you know we're. We're happy to support you when we can. It's my real honor. The always come down and it's one of my favorite one of my favorite venues. I've said this a million times as the first racetrack that I could come to on a on a you know several day a week basis and it really kinda changed it was important in my own interests than and Development and passion for the game because anybody that comes here people come here for the first time. It's always my favorite like after Haskell for instance or anytime somebody gets the occasion to come here they they're like Oh my God they do you see pictures they think it's small and quaint and they come and their invariably just blown away by you know what a jewel it is. I it's it's one of the great venues in the sport. It is is one of the world class venues it's a jewel for our sport and you know it's been my obligation and pleasure to preserve it now did it against all odds. It continues to be an amazing accomplishment that <hes> on literally literally on a week to week basis watching legislation and watching the various states handling the siding how they're gonNA handle sports betting and the industries that have that you essentially created you know by your perseverance to me. I if it was be I I don't know I I walk around the I'd walk around with a sign on on my back time. Something something that is amazing I as an attorney I've asked you this two or three times. I mean what what it's like to change the course of legal history and Scott just be a point of you. Just you gotta read these stories as they evolve and you just what what goes through your head. Oh It's almost the pinnacle of your career sure enough. They -CCOMPLISH something like that but I remember been a trial lawyer for longtime. My father founded the firm before me and I used to come back after a huge win thinking I accomplished something and the next day okay so you did that. What's next? What's next today? So you know we have a lot more to accomplish your Obama Park. The future of Monmouth Park and racine is that you have to create more reasons for people to come after become a destination venue you have to think ahead of the curve you know even though we have sports betting now <hes> when we have racing <hes> we haven't lost track of wanting to have some casino gaming in the future East sports is a hot thing that you know we're taking a look at we want to get the younger demographics in here. You know when our current road racing fans ultimately go onto you know a better place you have replacements for them. You know you need to appeal to the younger generation and you can't ever say okay. I'm satisfied with what I've accomplished because there's always something new to do. Sports betting came at thought it would be a little slower but it isn't the business of running the business you know becomes complicated and time consuming so our work is never done well and ah which begs one question and not to not to run away again with with with this discussion but making the wagering game making the racing betting product competitive more attractive from pricing standpoint..

"Well you know i always tried to cooperate with the state you know in this effort because you know this was a team effort and you know i certainly respect the governor of the state the senate president and the speaker we know legally you know there was no injunction issued against monmouth park and now that's premium court has reversed and said that pass was unconstitutional on a legal basis we could open under the private regulated body which was the former two thousand fourteen law but having said that and having planned to move forward quickly i've always said that if the governor senate president or assembly speaker ask us to slow down we would do that so they're doing some legislation now there's an assembly draft of a build there's a senate draft i'm sure they'll get together and make those identical there are some legislative hearings that will be on the fourth which is monday then the current schedule would have the assembly in the senate voting on the bills on the seven and sending them off to the governor and the governor presume would sign the bills expeditiously and you know we're being told at least at this point there's a likelihood we could get our license on june eight and assuming that's the case we're gonna make every effort to open to the public on june the eight and if there's some delay you know we can't control that but you know that's what we're being told about that come june eighth we should be good to go already are you concerned that if the legislature drags its feet then some other state may getting ahead of you because obviously this cleared the way for everybody to do it and you know maybe some states that want to get in ahead of new jersey well i do know that delaware is planning on starting their wagering on june fifth so yeah we're a little disappointed that another state could start before us but we have to respect the process here in new jersey you know we'd take gambling seriously our legislature and our governor wants to get it right from the start and so you know having a little bit of a delay although personally i'd like to be i yeah it's not gonna hurt us tremendously of delaware starts and some of.

"I'm talking about new jersey because it was mentioned in the us supreme court case but is there a possibility that other states could start taking sports bets before new jersey possible i think jersey for reasons we talked about earlier is is in private position to get going pretty quickly but i heard people in west virginia already saying yesterday that they'd like to have things going before the nfl season starts as well and it's a small state kind of news and it might be a little bit easier for them maybe like the the the lower your that market for them to get things going pretty quickly to i definitely think that pennsylvania's gonna be pushing as well and more states but i would i would just i get that a lot of states would be looking at the goal there have been going by that is because of the biggest opportunity of the year in terms of revenue they'll be pushed by several things go online around the same time i think you just answered my next question is when can we start seeing sports betting is so it's definitely football season right that are trying to push are going to have at least early the football season it might be slightly dishes to be online before but it definitely real possibility that happens too but i expect before the end of the year article about this yesterday on and john gambling about which states you might be able to take then by the end of this year it right correct i want to turn our attention back to new jersey is there a place right now that is the front runner for sports betting i know we talked about monmouth park who i think it'd been preparing for this for months.

"The next year you'll see three or four states that do it and then whether three or four dribble out over time but what is clear is that he does make sports incidently more valuable because i do think it does increase the want for people to bet so i think i think there's going to be more dollars bet i think there's gonna be a whole industry of gambling information that now come out of what was previously you know the undo belly i think the amount of people who were in the tau business in the early eighties and early nineties up until maybe ninety two ninety three and then that business kind of faded away i think that will rise up again so everyone's gonna be looking for an advantage is gonna be interesting to see what happens with the corner bookie i i don't think that person goes away that person's still only person's going off offered credit and allow allow you to not put up money and still that but you know we'll we'll have to see i think obviously the race tracks there overestimating what they're going to get i do not think monmouth park will make a billion dollars in a single year on sports betting which is what they're projecting at the high end but we'll see there's there's a lot i think we'll go slower than people think but it is an unbelievable race between the draft games and the fan bills fan duel pardoning patty power and bet fair eights caesar guys instead of the people who are just the silicon valley guys trying to build apps out of nowhere that are the easiest to use and maybe through someone else trying to get a license so this this is you know the greatest race in sports after maybe the the college you know the the war the the financial war among colleges be greater than the neck.

"It's jockey's silks that i go by because that's the best way to discern the horses from each other those are the colors of each individual courses owner and that's the way to be able to tell them apart what i do is when the horses come onto the track i just repeat their names over and over until i feel like i know who they are without having to look at my program obviously race like the derby or the preakness you do that well in advance with the preparation by making you know cue cards so you know who they are look at look at one side with the silks and say hey that's justify that's good magic until you just have just embedded in your memory and then the you know with a normal racing day as soon as that race crosses the wire there's just leave your head and you have to dump all that information out and in half an hour call another race ever made a glaring mistake i have once or twice yeah we had we had a race it akwa duct couple years back called the wood memorial which is a pretty big preparation for the kentucky derby and there was a horse down on the inside there was sort of fog that they not quite as bad as the preakness but i thought it was another horse all the way up until the wire as soon as they hit the why i real realised that was not calling the right horse the entire stretch run and it was it was pretty embarrassing and luckily it wasn't the last race i call that they so i could sort of recover and a half an hour well you also had august of twenty ten at monmouth park which is one of your better moments i think nationally or at least the opportunity for people to realize what you do and you you don't know how these courses are going to intertwine when you look at the program but it seemed to intertwine magically that day so we'll take you back to that call here's larry cole miss at monmouth park my wife knows everything broke well lady tatas up and on the pace role host tunas out third the life doesn't know fourth to the.

"The supreme court essentially this week opening it up for gambling to become legal anywhere and essentially what it was is a win for the state of new jersey but it in overtime expect many many many many many states to be able to legally bet on sports and it's kind of made the idea is here ninety s i read that ninety seven percent of sports wagers are bet through illegal means whether it's off shore betting sites or through bookies or the like now that doesn't have to happen anymore so if you want to bet on sports you're not going around the law you just you wanna bet on sports you can bet on sports anywhere you want virtually is the likelihood here in the very near future would you think of of that when it happened like that the lead state by state we'll see what happens looks like new jersey monmouth park there are set to begin sports betting memorial day with william hill sports book dr and others want to follow so they want to certainly get in now if they wanted to get indefinitely before the nfl season think the states are going to be some pressure there to to get it all raring to go and then lined up and then the mobile device the phone the ipad making convenient nehisi in game betting has become very popular in recent years they wanna certainly allow that to happen and then the added viewing i mean that's what's going to be huge for t from a tv standpoint and and the the fight hours and hours on these people now we're going to watch that game there will be more intently watching and and there'll be more intent on placing a wager now i think you'll see women now with fantasy that would happen there now with gambling you can bet legally and you can do it easily with an app or a phone and you're gonna have in game betting as well for the nfl comes at the right time it was a rough year with the protests and the kneeling with national anthem and the negativity that came with.

"Day lots going on i guess the biggest headline is sports gambling now legal or states can make legal if they wish thanks to the supreme court decision i think new jersey will be first in line absolutely by memorial day row down at monmouth park clearly well i think james corden made a good point last night on the late late show on cbs some big super premium court news today the highest court in the land has struck down a federal law the fan sports gambling so now it's going to be legal to bet on sports every school's finding america was like oh good we can stop betsy oh that's true what's gamblers are rolling their eyes saying oh what's the big deal although this is now what do you think makes this tweet at our a show twitter feed at lend michael wer raymond tweeted he said gambling as a disease taxes generate will be misspent and squandered by our incompetent and corrupt so called political leaders.

"The the idea that it's gonna be good news because it's going to be a boon for purses it's kind of like monmouth park slot machines but i think any gain from horse you know from from from tax or course racing being the outlet for sports gambling is going to be short term but long term i think are not our opportunity but our obligation is gonna be to compete regular during the the bats were were pence it the content data which were way more expensive and then the transparency of sport which just because of the sheer volume of ingenuity paid to this other sports on talk radio and a bunch of television stations twenty four hour news they ever had start so i hope that represents a chance for us to get our business back in line and then i think horse planes great it's a great wagering pretended and it's what we all love but if we can if we can get the pricing and order and then we can then hopefully it represents something we can really do to help the business it seems to me like one way we're gonna know pretty early on how the wind is blowing with the in the states where sports betting becomes legal is is what they're going to do about pricing are they going to do in my mind the only sensible thing which is to follow this established business model from las vegas of the ten cents sport lines that has been so successful for so long or do you see it like with racing and being regulated on a state by state level potentially them falling into what i would think is a trap of charging more money for their bets any sense on that.

"Craft and these other owners are already partners with draft kings and fan duel this is just the next logical step which is what just flat out gambling on on on over under and all that stuff having having i mean having kiosk in the stadiums like having all like again watching a sporting event in a sports book like i used to an event arrives elf it is because you know games are over but the cheering never stops i think that's coming and how about this i don't want to sit jose whwhat states need to do they have to do this they have to take some of this revenue aside and have some sort of programming for addictive gamblers they have to they have to now you could sit here and say well some places might not do that for the lottery is a this is a different ball of wax and by the way is are the state's going to have a limit on what you could bet could some like shark come out come in from out of state and drop a seven figure amount and they're going to take that bet from new jersey and paid out like where's the payout money coming from pension fund i mean i'm serious like everyone's say oh hey new jersey's open for business i don't know the answer this maybe i should ask andrew brandt where where's the pet the i bet let's see the i bet gets late at monmouth park and that and then and then for even for for five seconds the state of new jersey is in the red on this where's the payout money coming from i would just say there are new buildings being built all the time could it be possible i i understand that that the new buildings are being built right now but what if what if new jersey opens for business monmouth park hey everybody we're open come on and bet the ponies and bet on bet on on the nba finals.

"Team average betting nfl fan watches about fifty games that is gold literally to the music ears of nfl executives where okay we're gonna have all this new interest from gambling which means revenue which means continued growth of franchise values all of the above so what happens next andrew andrew brandt here on the rich eisen show having covered this as well as you have what what happens next do you think well i think those high priced lawyers you mentioned and lobbyists are continue to work congress to see if there can be a federal framework to this but meanwhile it's going to happen and when i say gonna happen new jersey is poised they've had monmouth park ready to go spend a million dollars on nevada style sports book i think it could be opened by the nfl i'm sorry nba finals then you have states like pennsylvania delaware new york connecticut west virginia poised they have bills that have gone through committees that are ready to go and we could see action by the nfl season the problem for the nfl is this is a patch work so it is state by state does this present and go shopping opportunity with the union where marijuana state by state but not according to the nfl because that's negotiate with the union you can't smoke at least you have a protocol in place you have a drug testing program we'll see what happens there they put out statements like we want to get involved in this too and there's gonna be a negotiation so i understand what's going on in rogers offices right now how do we control this how do we monetize in the right way is it going to be a singular deal with a sports book is it gonna be some integrity fee with these states they gotta get ahead of it i love that phrase integrity that's great absolutely but because you know look you know as ron darling said last hour that there's always gonna be somebody at the at the low end of the salary spectrum in a sport that could be susceptible and wind up being in a game and throwing it for all the wrong reasons now that it could be more prevalent or that could be again an argument that is being used against sports gambling that that is not operative really when it all comes down to it and the leagues are gonna want a.

"I show talking about it this morning amongst many things supreme court rule seventytwo overturn the federal ban on sports wagering to i need to know to maybe darrell no decide now so a lot of details still needs to be worked out and i know vincent the former mlb commissioner was talking about this that he thought it was going to happen but there'd be major regulation that guy yes that guy so dan rebel our swords insider analyst joins us now here on keyshawn george and els e darren thank you for taking the time i know you've got to be busy today so this one is clearly a game changer how would you best contextualized how big this thing is how would you how would you best contextualized how big this is today all right well so new jersey's going to be the first state because new jersey has already put on the parameters of if the professional sports amateur active nineteen ninetytwo were ruled unconstitutional which was today than they would sit up where within two weeks they could have sports gambling so monmouth park which is aiming to be the first one to do it on day ten thousand fourteen they they thought they were gonna get sports gambling so they built a sports bar that they were gonna turn to sportsbook monmouth park sense that they could have things up and running in potentially two weeks and when this reaches maturity and maybe two or three years they think they'll be taking a billion dollars a year and new jersey will be taking eight billion now i have no idea whether that's completely crazy or not obviously other states will now come aboard come up with their own legislation but this is this is.
