"Welcome to the nutrition to the podcast. I'm your host, Monica Rheingau and this week I'm sharing some highlights of a conversation I recently had with less yet marina who is the CO founder with Olga David of a program called I cook after school. This is a hands on extracurricular program for elementary school kids where cooking and kitchen skills are used not just as way to talk to kids about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating, which is important enough. But also as a fun way to teach math reading chemistry, physics problem solving and more. I was so excited to learn about this program because it makes sense to me on. So many levels I teaching kids to cook is a very effective way to get them excited about healthy foods. Secondly, knowing how to cook is a really important life skill and one that. So many of today's adults never really learned to their detriment and finally it is a super fund effective way to reinforce the subjects they're learning in school. I Cook After School began in twenty fourteen as an after school program for children at elementary schools in the Chicago area. By march of this year, the program had expanded to six states but but when the global pandemic closed schools, lesieur and Olga nimbly converted their program to virtual programs which are now available to parents and school systems nationwide. The company has to registered Dietitians on staff and several of their culinary instructors are also Dietitians. Look kids actually love to cook. We may think of it as a chore, but They Love It. This has been something that I've used to keep my nieces and nephews entertained since they were very small. It's how we spend time together and as they got older, the recipes got more elaborate and now a couple of them are off cooking on their own but I've also found that kids are much more receptive and adventurous about what they're willing to eat and what kinds of foods they might be excited about if they're actually involved in the process. Now this can be especially useful if you have picky eaters. Now, when we have picky eaters, it's not just that they're being disobedient tour hard to handle some kids really do have a hard time with various aspects of taste and texture. New Foods are very challenging for them. And when they are in the kitchen actually preparing food and choosing foods it gives them a little bit of control and that can really lower their anxiety about those unfamiliar foods. Here's LASAGNA. They're hard to lecture cats white have to get badges and fruits every day by when they're cooking when they're engaged at home It makes it a little bit either to tell them to prove them that it actually works if you treat your body. Right. So when you have a picky eater at home you have to work with them you you cannot force them to eat something you want them to eat. Based on our experience, we see the picky eaters so much more open to try new things when they actually made the themselves because of what they made and they're very investment. So they are curious what it takes like and little by little they expand berry taste fellow. I Cook after school works mostly with kids between six and eleven, years of age, and obviously you can't just hand little kids sharp.

progesterone and other hormones in your body synchronizing your consumption of various area seeds with your menstrual cycle can allegedly relieve hormone related symptoms such as p. m. s. p. c. o. s. that's polycystic ovarian syndrome irregular alert periods hot flashes and generally increase your level of wellbeing some even claim that seat cycling can help you get pregnant in a typical seed cycling protocol you add two tablespoons of ground seeds every day you can mix the seeds into a smoothie or sprinkled on your oatmeal and purists insist is that the seeds be raw and freshly ground chewing well of course counts as grinding during phase one which lasts two weeks you eat a tablespoon of flax and a tablespoon of pumpkin seeds and then during phase two which also lasts two weeks you switch to sunflower and sesame seeds and this would add about one hundred calories nine grams of fat for grams of protein and three grams of fiber to your day now if you are still menstruating you'd start phase one that's the pumpkin and the flaxseed on the first day of your period and then switched to phase two that some flour and sesame steeds on or around day fourteen if you're no longer menstruating you can start phase one on the first of the month or some women like to synchronize their seed cycling two phases of the moon beginning phase one on the new moon and phase two on the full moon howling at the moon is strictly optional during a normal menstrual cycle your levels of estrogen and progesterone ebb and fall in a predictable rhythm as you approach menopause your hormone levels may start to fluctuate more erratically and then after menopause production of both hormones settles at a significantly lower level theoretically seed cycling clean either enhances or inhibits the production of estrogen and progesterone in the body depending on what is needed thereby balancing and optimizing using your hormones and relieving symptoms due to hormonal imbalance a few months of cycling is said to be enough to begin to see the benefits and of course as has this trend has taken hold seed cycling recipe collections smoothly mixes energy bars and cookies have appeared online and in health food stores so how are these seeds supposed to affect your hormone balance will flax and sesame seeds both contain lignans which have been found to affect estrogen activity in in human cells and in animal models what effect they have depends on whether there is a surplus or a deficit of estrogen already on hand so in the absence of estrogen lignans are mildly estrogens that is they stimulate estrogen receptors on the surface of cells but but in the presence of estrogen they are mildly anti estrogen ick blocking some of that estrogen from reaching the receptors the lignans in both flax lacks in sesame are similar in their estrogen regulating effects but for reasons i cannot explain they are traditionally used in opposite parts in the seed cycling protocol pumpkin sunflower seeds meanwhile play more of a supporting role they contribute nutrients such as vitamin e. and zinc that generally generally support reproductive-health now before we take a look at the evidence to support seeds cycling let me pause and thank this sponsors support for this week's podcast cast comes from pete and jerry's organic eggs pete and jerry's has done one thing for generations produce not a lot of research to look at here but seed consumption does not appear to have a measurable effect on estrogen or progesterone levels in in menstruating women the vital estrogen activity of these seeds while observable is just too mild to actually move the needle on human hormone levels for postmenopausal women whose hormone levels are much lower some research suggests that including flax or sesame seeds in your diet on a regular basis this can have some mild benefits including reduced hot flashes but in most studies these effects were pretty similar to what they got from placebo most of these studies also involved larger amounts of flax or sesame lignans than you'd get from a typical seat cycling protocol and while flax and sesame both have potential benefits there's really very little rationale for cycling them because cycling is very unlikely to have a significant effect on your hormone levels it is generally safe safe even if you're pregnant or nursing or have or have had breast cancer or another hormone sensitive cancer if you have any concerns though you should definitely run them past your doctor dr all types of seeds are full of good nutrition including protein fiber and healthy fats and the lignans in flax and sesame while they may have only minor effects on hormone levels may offer some cancer protective benefits in short there are a lot of good reasons to include seeds in your diet and if you like the idea of consuming them in cycles or you feel that doing this increases your well being there certainly no harm to this practice but but there's also no need to worry about consuming the wrong seed on the wrong day in the show notes for today i included links to some more information on how nutrition affects ex-pm s. p. c. o. s. menopause and That's bulldog online dot com slash nutrition. Diva. Joining me on the show today is registered dietitian nutritionist, Janice basics. Welcome, janice. Thanks, monica. It's great to be with you. Janice. You and I have known each other for years now. And when we first met you were the co host of the long running needle makeover moms podcast and then a couple of years ago. You really shifted your practice to providing information about all things cannabis everything from medical marijuana to CBD oil, which we're gonna be talking about today. But I have to ask you kneel makeover mom to cannabis Janice is pretty big league. So what led to this dramatic shift in focus for you? If it was quite a big leaf in nothing that I would have ever expected in my life, but two and a half years ago. My father was suffering some from very severe pain in he had been in pain for quite a while in. He was taking the usual pain. Meds, the doctors give you and had a lot of side effects. He didn't like how they made him feel. He was groggy. He was severely constipated that required a hospital. Stay said to his doctor really is there. Nothing else. We can do for his pain. I said what about medical marijuana now mind, you Monica? I knew nothing about medical marijuana. They teach us that in nutrition school. They don't and even all through college. All my friends were smoking pot. I just wasn't interested. I tried it. Once when I was a senior because I thought I may never get this opportunity. Again, didn't like it never even thought about it again. So when his doctor said, I think that's a great idea. I thought rent row, I better I better do some research. So I did and the more I learned the more. I thought will wait a minute. Why why don't we know about this? Why aren't we promoting this? Because from what I read in learned it has quite a lot of potential for pain management. So got dad certified we went to a dispensary. Got him a vape pen came home. He took a couple of puffs. And then he said, I'm going to go take a nap and he stood up. He said, wow. I said are you dizzy what he said, I'm not in pain. And that was so dramatic to me from him going from ily debilitating pain to having that pain re reduced so dramatically. So right. Then that day, I said, okay. I am changing my career in. I'm going back to school which I did to become a holistic cannabis practitioner in took me about a year. And that's what I've been doing ever since. So we're not talking about medical marijuana today. We're going to be zeroing in specifically on CV oil. But before we start that just help sort out some of the terminology here we have marijuana we have head. We have cannabis. Are these all words for the same thing? Not exactly cannabis marijuana is is a. It's a slang term. I don't use that term marijuana. I used the word cannabis and cannabis has been used for over six thousand years medically and Chinese medicine. It was in doctors kits as they went doing house calls in then it became sort of outlawed or vilified in the early nineteen hundreds. It was in the pharmacopoeia Monica where doctors go to find out about dosing with different medications until nineteen forty two. And then for reasons that we will not give into today, it became vilified in then it became scheduled as a schedule one substance, which means there is no medical benefit and high potential for abuse that's cannabis in general. Okay. So it's on the back burner. People thought of it is just what people would would use to get stoned to get high in then in the late nineteen hundreds. We started discovering more of the medical rediscovering, I should say more of the medical benefits. Of cannabis. Ian, we discovered in nineteen Ninety-two that we have what's called an Indo cannabinoid system in our bodies, all of us even animals have this Endo cannabinoid system that is geared to us and process cannabinoid Canaveral. It's that are found in the cannabis plant in we make two of those on our own so back to back to cannabis is marijuana him is from the same cannabis plant, but hem contains less than point three percent. THC THC is one of the Canaveral in cannabis plant in that's the one that's responsible for that. High feeling the euphoria often the paranoia that some people feel when using canvas so hemp is cannabis with very very little THC. Okay. I have so many questions about CB oil, and I was really glad to have a resource to turn to in you that I knew was going to be able to give evidence base information. However in the interest of transparency, we should say that in addition to counseling patience and health providers on the use of medical marijuana and CBD products. You do also sell CD products through your website. How do you manage that potential conflict of interest? But question, in fact, my intention was never to sell. I never thought I would sell any supplement in when I was doing research. I found out that the FDA did a study and found that seventy percent of the CBD products on the market are mislabeled some of them contain zero CD. So people are looking at this and saying, wow CBD that's expensive. I can sell it and make lots of money in. They are putting out a product that is in. Fear. You're it's it's may not contain CBD it may have contaminants in. So I said to myself while I better find a product that I can recommend. So I worked with an intern for three weeks. And I said fine me a product that. I can that. We know is good quality that I can say to my clients. Listen, this is what you should buy in a product that we found that was high quality, it's organically grown it's broad spectrum which we get into later. Was a company in Colorado. And I said, okay, I'd like to recommend your product. They said, well, we don't sell direct retail. We do white label. So you would have to put your own label on that. And I said, I'm not gonna do that. That's just not what I'm thinking of. But in the end, I said, okay. This is what I will do I hired someone to make labels develop a logo. And then my Janice wellness hemp CBD products were born to that's how I got into it. It was sort of very I

The FDA recently announced that its planning to increase its oversight of the multibillion dollar supplement industry. Now that would include everything from the calcium and multivitamins at your local drugstore to those questionable weight loss and virility supplements that you see pitched on late night cable TV stations, according to the FDA three out of every four Americans takes a dietary supplement on a regular basis and for older Americans that rises to four out of five. Meanwhile, one in three of our kids are taking supplements. Now, all of these are currently regulated under guidelines known as dish that stands for dietary supplement, health and education act. According to these regulations manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that their products are safe and correctly labeled. However, unlike drugmakers supplement manufacturers do not have disappeared. Proof of safety or efficacy before bringing their product to market it sort of an honor system, if you get caught doing something wrong, you'll be punished but for the most part and without evidence to the contrary. There's an assumption that people are following the rules in the twenty five years since these regulations were enacted the supplement industry has grown tenfold from about four thousand products back in nineteen ninety four to over fifty thousand different products. Now with this explosive growth has come an increasing number of what FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, calls bad actors companies that are either intentionally or maybe even accident-free breaking the rules as a result. There's a greater chance that consumers will be exposed to products that have undeclared or even illegal ingredients or contaminants, and there's also a greater chance. That products may include unapproved or inaccurate health claims. In response to all of this Gottlieb intends to step up enforcement of the regulations. And hopefully, this will result in fewer people going to the hospital emergency room due to adverse effects from dietary supplements in twenty fifteen for example, there were twenty three thousand such visits. But to tell you the truth, even when manufacturers are strictly obeying the rules. They're still a lot of potential for consumers to be wasting their money on supplements that simply aren't doing anything for them before he continue. Let me take a quick break to thank our sponsors.
