New Law Changes With Tom Black

"Hello and welcome to your retirement solution with tom. Black good morning tom. How're ya. I am doing great. It is a beautiful day with lots of opportunity absolutely happy new year by the way. This is our first recording. You and i in the in twenty twenty one. Yeah it's going to be Should be really interesting year. I we it has to be different. I don't know better but it has to be something has to change. I'm i'm really hoping for better and speaking of changes you're talking about that today a little bit. We're going to talk a little bit today about Proposed changes under the new administration and things that people ought to be thinking about nassir panicking about yet but just thinking about because of the lightning what we could see some changes dealing with the last couple of years all right and what kind of changes are we talking about specifically today. Well there's there's kind of a basset of multiple different ones. We've you may or may not have heard about the we're going to be seen some increases in taxes or some individuals and some of that depends on what happens with the so called trump tax break of twenty eighteen. One of the things have benefited everybody. That was included in there was a was the twelve percent tax bracket and that's been really beneficial to absolutely everybody who pays taxes and they're talking about on reversing those trump those tax bills. Which would mean that all of us. Potentially you know three percent more in taxes. Ghana still up on. These things are all in the air. But that's one of the first things we look at. We started talking about. How is this going to affect all of our clients in general or just individuals in general taxes. And that's the first thing that i was thinking about the other. Now that we know where georgia falls is that we could potentially be seeing other attached changes that can affect how you've been planning for your retirement or for the passing of your assets the next generation one of the ones that i am most interested in keeping an eye on for our clients is somewhat People either they've heard about it. They have no idea how this works. And it's called a step up in basis that you heard of this before i have but i don't quite understand all of it okay. So let's start with that with the basic idea. Let's say that Your parents bought calf dozen stocks in the sixties. And and they've held them ever since then. Well if your parents died in leave you those stocks you might be able you would be able to today. Turn around and sell those and pay no taxes on the gain you know. Maybe it's a million dollars with the gains okay. Yeah yeah yeah so i. If my parents were to sell them they'd have to pay yet. But if i if i inherit them then i don't that's correct. Well okay. that sounds good basis and you imagine people who are retired been retired for a while. who have some of these positions stock positions. If up well hail hold onto it. And if i die owning my kids will have to pay taxes on part of their narrates not a bad strategy. If you didn't need the money yeah problem now is all we're doing now is kicking the can down the road because if that does get refilled and that is really high on the list That can change. How you're going. You know how you plan on passing those assets so the kids. Oh yeah yeah. Yeah yeah and i was gonna say it seems to be almost a double edged sword there. Because if you're saying that they may change that and then if i in twenty years let's say i passed these stocks down to my kids and they have to pay taxes on them. We've we've already kind of seen the writing on the wall. That taxes are most likely going to be higher because we have to pay for all the debt that happened this last year with kobe. The relief and everything else in the trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars so that really changes the game not only does it bring those taxes back it. they'll probably higher. Don't you think absolutely. Oh boy i had this conversation with one of my clients In december and and in that situation they had About two million dollars in capital gains. And what was trying to get him. Understand was the taxes weren't going to get any cheaper and and we were better off to take the beating at which is approximately twenty four for them would have been about twenty four percent in taxes taxes any real by the stocks back but if pay taxes on it because it won't be cheaper in four years to pay the taxes mondo stocks if the gains continued to go. So it's it's a lot more complex than than just the the idea that you're right. It's going to get more experience so we know it is. It has to yeah not even last year. I mean we've been we've been spending money like drunken sailors for

"In the middle of some nom nom news. And this next piece is exciting. This comes out of eater l A, which we love and written by a buddy of ours who comes on the show. He was looking Forward to some of the information that was coming out about essential workers within the food and agricultural industry. So restaurant employees could begin receiving doses around the same time. You know, Mondo, Amy and I start receiving, which is mid March. So we're looking at Um, that changing as well. What does that mean? Well, that means we can see more openings. That means that we might have indoor dining again. Um, sooner than later the these things could be very powerful and very helpful. Towards not only the economy, but let's face it, You know, emotional strength, you know, find finding ourselves again in the community and interacting There is an uptick there has been an uptick in crime. There has been a no uptick in, you know, mental issues and stress and anxiety and all these things. These pressures that we've been taking on through all of this that we need. We need to release We need to do it safely. But we need to release and I think this is good news. So Los Angeles County continues to do these mass vaccinations. You've heard of closures in certain areas. Of course, with the intense whether that we're having, uh throughout parts of the United States. There's also issues with getting meds from one place to the other.

Coronavirus Stimulus Talks Moving in Right Direction, Party Leaders Say

"This morning Democrats getting behind a scaled back stimulus toe. Try to restart talks for more. We're joined by Brown University Political science chair Wendy Schiller, professor Good to have you on with us this morning of morning where it seems like stimulus hopes. Spring eternal. But how much hope do you put in Speaker Pelosi in minority leader Schumer backing this bipartisan legislation that was worth about $900 billion it was put forward this week. Good morning, agent. Well, I mean, I think that they recognize that the you know the whole country is being hit really hard by this, but that they're the areas that are you know, traditional sport of Democrats are getting hit again really hard, and they had wanted direct aid for states and cities. They couldn't get it from Trump. They're not going to get from Senate Republicans. So basically someone like Durban and represents Illinois Big City like Chicago has to make a decision system Majority Minority Leader and them hard party and say, all right, we gotta get something you know if we you know, we especially unemployment, either top off or extension or some combination of those things on. I think the Democrats want to get what they can and not turn this into the first battle that Biden have the face once he's inaugurated. Is this about the pandemic, getting to the level that it's at now? Or is this a dose of political reality, given how the election turned out for the house, particularly with Democrats losing seats in November? I do think that the Democrats are not looking at a scenario that they hope to be looking at come January, which was a majority Democratic Senate and then picking up more seats in the house, where they could really, you know, right from ticket with Biden, so given that that's out the window. Even if the Democrats take one or two of US Georgia seats that's still not really a likely scenario you can control the Senate, barely. I have a very razor thin margin in the house now for the Democrats, So yeah, it's a political reality. But I think it's also about what they hope Biden can achieve What becomes president and taking one really big thing off the table before he starts that job, and I think that's a big incentive for them because then they could turn to things like infrastructure, which would also help the economy. Well, what's your sense of what President Biden could achieve. Given the realities of what Senate control is gonna look like either way, depending on how the Georgia run offs turned out, it's going to be a razor thin margin, no matter which way you slice it, and the president elect has said. Whatever gets past if something gets past, but during this lame duck session is going to be a down payment. For something much bigger. Well, right. I mean, this is what you know. Obama wanted a much bigger stimulus than he got in 2009 as well, and he had all three chambers. It's a very hard thing, particularly with it, you know, $3 trillion deficit and rising. So I mean, I just think one of the key factors. Both parties were looking at Tau look towards 2022. Because that's where both parties are looking right now, at least in the Congress side is that suburban voters were willing to split their ticket. And very noticeable voted Republican straight down the line voted for Joe Biden and maybe because it in like Trump. We don't know for sure, but they were willing to do that and then vote for Republicans in other offices, knowing that they're willing to do that means that they're up for Gramps, and I think that's the serve Achilles heel for the Republicans in blocking everything for Biden. I don't think they think they can do that and still safely hold onto the seats they want to defend in 2022, so that's where Biden and the Democrats have a bit of a bargaining advantage. In trying to get moderate proposal through that will help Cove it will help the economy will make suburban voters happy. I'm curious to get your take on how Biden has been starting to fill out his cabinet. Now. There are reports that he plans to announce his health team next week, and one of the names were hearing for health and human services. Secretary is someone that you're familiar with in your home state of Rhode Island Governor Gina Rowe Mondo That Gina Romano has done in an outstanding job in a very small state, but a very, very heavily densely populated state. So she's been dealing with sort of a big outbreak for a long time It subsided. Then it came back. She's been excellent communications and made some missteps very early on in terms of summer management with nursing homes, as other governors did, but generally speaking, has had very high approval ratings and has been thought to make this situation much better than it would have. Then, so she shown leadership in a very stressful time, And she's also communicated really well about why she's doing what she's doing. And I think any pick for HHS secretary has to be an excellent communicator because you have to basically explain the American people why we're doing what we're doing, and when we're doing it, and she's been doing that so consistently, and then it helps bring her state's not complete compliance. Bring her state along in a way that's been relatively successful. Are you surprised at all that, at least so far, we haven't heard any names of Democratic primary opponents on any of Biden's Cabinet shortlists. Well, he can't take. I mean, really. He just can't take anybody out of the Senate. Right? So that takes worn out that takes Sanders out. I know Sanders. People are very disappointed about that on. I think that's what Bernie was hoping for debris Sanders was hoping for, but you just can't take a Democrat out of the Senate. Even the Democratic government still can't do it right now, so that makes sense to me. I think people usually think people wanted him to get something he may still get something There's been talk about veterans affairs. But remember, you know, the Republicans have been relatively accepted to buy these choices so far, except for one choice. Neera Tanden for O M B. I think that's going to hit some some bumps along the way. Probably big bumps. But generally speaking, he wants a smooth Cabinet confirmations, You know process. So anybody who's super politicized more to the left of Biden for a top job. It's just probably out of the question, given the composition of the Senate. Only about 30 seconds left here. Do you think Attorney General Bar is on borrowed time after the voter fraud allegations from President Trump? I think during her borrow, looked ahead to the future and decided does he want to leave the Trump administration with any shred of credibility? And I think this move was designed to show that he wouldn't be try to leave with credibility and confirm the election knowing he's gonna leave anyway. And, you know, thinking about what's next so that he gets fired doesn't get fired. I think what he did was forward thinking for him. Not Miss Ellie and President Trump. Everyone wants to know course the news is. Are you going to move us to phase three? The answer's yes. Rhode Island has stayed in phase three ever since and during her weekly interview on 12 news. Now it formed, the governor says that's not going to change anytime soon. As much as I would love to relax these regulations. I just I'm confident. That's not the right thing to do. We have to stay where we are in Phase three. And just hold on for a few more months until we have the vaccine. But despite an uptick in daily cases and hospitalizations, reaching their highest level since June, the governor says We're not going to move backwards either. So we're not there yet, in fact, not close to being there, but I will say this cam. It's not the trend we want to say, and I would ask what Islanders to try to be a little bit more careful. I was with Dr Burkes. This afternoon, she visited Rhode Island. Small Small group gatherings. Maybe coffee after church. Maybe having a few friends over for dinner. We get relaxed. We don't wear wear masks. That's what we're seeing here is what we think is driving this increase, she says. The good news is the state's test. Positive rate is still under 2% and Rhode Island is testing a lot. Add to that testing regiment. The governor herself who's previously on Ly been tested twice once after her massless appearance at this June rally Now following President Trump's diagnosis that's going to change director of the Department of Health has suggested that I probably should get into a regular cadence. The personal history of David Copperfield features a diverse cast with Dev Patel as David Copperfield, but made his feature film debut in Two Thousand Eight Oscar winning slumdog millionaire. He also starred in both the best exotic marigold hotel movies and was nominated for an Oscar for the twenty sixteen movie lion now in the personal history of David Copperfield Dev Patel plays a young man trying to make his way through Victorian England despite numerous setbacks. He eventually becomes an author with a right turn out to be the hero of my story. Or that station will be held by anybody else. These moments must show. Recently Dead Patel join me via. skype to talk about his role as David Copperfield. I totally missed out on this classic growing up and I was sort of one of those kids that was false fed dickens as a child. In the curriculum and I I mean assist the shame most office I think. But you know for me in particular to be able to step into the shoes I related a lot to David. I think you know to his anxiety to his kind of imposter syndrome about a young man's johnny trying to fit in very much coming of age story and it's only when he can embrace his real truth and his past his own stories I guess that he finds triumph, and in this case, it says a great writer you know. I WANNA play a scene from the film Here your character David Meets Dora played by more fit Carter a young woman whose pet dog JIP starts a conversation with David. Fear Of Death Is Contagious In The Psychological Thriller 'She Dies Tomorrow'

"Our film critic Justin Chang says, she dies tomorrow feel surprisingly in tune with our present moment of unease. Everything you need to know going into sheet is tomorrow is pretty much right there in the title. This moody and more deadly funny psychological horror film opens on a young. Woman. Who Awakens one morning with a horrifying from edition of doom she believes that she's going to die tomorrow and it sends her into an eerily calm. Almost Zombie like trance. She wanders the rooms of her recently purchased lock home. She plays Mozart's requiem repeatedly on a record player and shops online for an urn to hold her cremated remains. She never explains why she thinks her death is imminent, but the look on her face is so grave and haunted that we find ourselves believing it to. The woman played by the excellent actress Caitlin she'll is named amy. Not. Coincidentally, that's also the name of the filmmaker amy scientists who has said that the movie was inspired by her own experiences with anxiety and her recognition of how easily that panic could affect those around her. And she dies tomorrow the fear of death proves contagious. The mere act telling someone that you're going to die tomorrow is enough to plant the idea that they are going to die tomorrow and so on and so on. The first person amy tells is her friend Jane played with a sharp comic edge by Jane Addams who thinks she's being ridiculous but the seed has been planted by the time Jane stops by her brother's house where a birthday party for her sister in law is in full swing she too has come to believe that she's going to die tomorrow. And once she voices this fear, the other party guests, it's only a matter of time before they also succumb. In the montage you're about to hear Simon's uses thunderously loud music written by Mondo boys and wild strobe lighting effects to achieve startling moments of operatic intensity. I'm going. To die. Tomorrow. Throughout the movie in these feverishly heightened intervals, Simon seems to be expressing level of horror that the characters themselves cannot. Jane's brother and sister in law. That's Christmas Gina and Katie Nolan do panic a little over what will happen to their daughter when they're both gone. But for the most part, everyone here tends to retreat into their own private moods showing little concern for others Jennifer Kim plays a party guest who abruptly breaks off a relationship something she'd been meaning to do for months. Her now ex boyfriend played by tune had been bay does something much more frighteningly impulsive. Interestingly no one really tries to ward off the crisis or even figure out what's going on a sense of futility sets in and stays there. There's something troublingly resonant for me about the characters inertia. Speaking as someone who's able to work from home and hasn't suffered so many have during the pandemic I'm not afraid of dying tomorrow but I recognize something of myself incitements as characters, the ones who retreat into a state of false calm maybe because screaming and expressing how they really feel might be too horrible or flat out exhausting to bear. I don't want to overstate the metaphorical implications of she is tomorrow, which was made well before the pandemic. But Simon's clearly has her finger on something about how people might respond or not respond to an invisible threat. She's made a fascinating disaster movie of the mind. This is the second feature scientists as written and directed seven years after her debut film. The lovers on the run drama sun don't shine. She's worked for more than a decade as an actor writer director and producer rooted in the independent film world, but with increasing forays into Hollywood. She's one of the key creative forces behind the TV series, the girlfriend experience, and you might also have seen her performances in recent studio thrillers like Alien Covenant and Pet cemetery a role that helped her finance this much lower budget horror movie. Depending on your persuasion, don't like she dies tomorrow might not sound like ideal pandemic viewing but I think one of the great virtues of the horror genre is that it can put our own fears into perspective. There can be enormous value in confronting our feelings of dread had on and feeling a sense of kinship with characters who are confronting there's to. Sign it's doesn't provide easy answers. She also doesn't tell us if her characters worries are justified. She closes the movie on a note, picked between serenity and alarm leaving us to wonder if the end is as near as it seems or tomorrow might, in fact, be another day.

"So maybe that's what it is. It's just a personal. So you got an a business you we're going to go for year two and then go back to your business and continue on with your life here for five years later. You're so into it, you're so I don't know dictate to it. It's heavy. If you get it out of your system is just to leave. So you've got to Japan. Yeah. I didn't take decision or how did you say? Hey, man, I'm in so deep if I keep going some bad's going to happen. So you know, what I'm a hall asked to Japan, I did a tour of Japan. And that was when I completely fell in love with the country. You can go to other countries Europe, you know, UK whatever we're still on the same planet, you go to Japan. It's like these people feel like they're all acting. I always at I felt like snap my fingers, and they're all going. Okay. We'll act like normal people now, but they're just so compliant there, so respectful there so diligent. It's I fell in love with the culture. I always had a dream of getting back there to work as an artist as a filmmaker. But part of it was with with my life. And with my wrestling, the identity, I just wanted to complete new paint job on everything just complete shift to tuck it all. Side. And so, yeah, I was offered a job as a documentary filmmaker. And so I moved to Japan and took that and. I guess it was more about just like turning a page and completely moving on with life. You know, but the wrestling did kind of creep back in which we can get into with Rory little Mondo. Did you start speaking the language? Yeah. It I had I had taken Japanese one and two in community college, slowly, preparing, but taking Japanese one and two is not being ready to speak the language then same with going rush from school, you know, relearn to get into ring on job training. Yes. On your entrenchment society, culture, you there? So did you pick it up? Yeah. It happened. Getting getting a job over there moving their happen quicker than I was expecting. But it's not a fun way. To learn a language, but it sure does help if you're forced they'd send me up to the disaster zone where the earthquake and soon NAMI hit and other times. I'm just by myself. And it's like we want you to meet these people in film, these interviews and I'm like, oh, man. So there so. Comma, dating in. So non-confrontational the Japanese that it's know I figured it out. But but yeah, that's that was how I I picked up the language Ernest. Roy you'd picked up on your shoulders yet match previously. And all of a sudden, I mean, you were like hitting his idol. Yeah. So all of a sudden now he's basically Mondo junior yacht. Our mental Mondo Rory when I was wrestling. There was a fan. He would dress up like me. I was Nick Mondo. He was little Mondo. He'd make a sign and hold it up. And it's kind of funny because up telling you, he's the biggest he'll in the building back, then the whole crowd sometimes would start chanting f little Bondo ch- f little mono, and I'm not kidding. Like the kids like one hundred pounds. Not even he'd stand up on the chair, and he'd be cursing him out like all of us here at work in the crowd. It was hysterical. Some of the wrestlers he'd legit get under their skin super dragon guy out for California like. Roy legit pissed that guy off a couple times. And I remember this clip that used to be online like he's just had enough. And he's just writing a little mon- does face. And finally he kind of punked him out and made them the slip back a little bit. And but like ROY got under his skin. It was really funny. But yeah, he's he's ten years younger than me. And I quit wrestling. I knew he was hanging around the school training did not know he was going to debut as little Mondo..

"Whereas, hey, man, I gotta have more gotta have more. I've got up fanny because that I'm sick, Nick Mondo. I mean, what is your relationship with pain go into the business, and we'll go on through life. Well, experience some type of physical pain injury. This business of ranch sling. You know, whatever it is death matched up even more extreme than that. What your relationship with pain now versus what was then because you wanted to inflicted upon yourself. There's part in in the docudrama war your whipping yourself. Yeah. Insane. I mean, d like it. No, I'm not somebody who enjoys pain, but I'm somebody who. It's sort of like this. Ferocious side of me where I look at it. And I think you're not gonna stop me. Like, I'm I'm not going to give into you. And so I do have a higher tolerance for it. But again when the adrenaline goes away when it wears off in your regular life. It's gonna be a tough guy like sucks man, just like getting up and having to pull on the railing to walk up the steps because my ankle is in such bad shaper bend over to brush might teeth and then stand up straight because my lower spine hurts, you know, that sort of thing it's just like one of deal with this all day long. But in the ring, I was never on any drugs. Some people some people ask that, and I was never on anything. But it doesn't hurt a lot of it didn't hurt as bad as you would imagine. It would like there's there's this wrestler Nate hatred, and he actually just died not too long ago in a car crash is very sad. But big frightening, really, really strong, man and. I helped get him into CW. And they wanted him to do a barbed wire boards match. And he had actually never done anything like that. And he came to me all nervous. And he's like, I don't know. What do I like can you help me prepare for this? And and I said, listen, listen. Here's what's.

"That's awful. If they'll let me know gonna take it for granted. Because you don't assume you're going to be given like the Plum jobs that like everyone wants, but in as long as I keep St. mobile post, I will carry on doing awful post is one of the beautiful things is there are multiple Black Panther pieces here there are multiple Infinity war vendors and all of the artists represented here. Yourself included have your own style your own feeling. Yeah. There's room for multiple versions. Yeah. I mean, that's kind of what's so great about Mon those the breadth of the office, they work with you know, we all different. And like no one's going to produce in the same way. I mean, I didn't know that. There was another concept. He's in the show. So I literally go here. Most Nansen just like kicks everything. But he's totally different from me in terms of the composition. The start of his soaring. So I mean now over the second best pound the poster, but that's fine. Because like most species amazing, totally different. And so I hope that some who have a doesn't like his if that person exists will like. Mine instead, so or they want all four. Yeah. That's the audio situation. Just by them time backtrack a little bit. How did you first give exposed to marvel the characters the universe? All that's is a big question. I'm trying to think when I actually discovered mobile like I read COMEX growing up, but then when I was about those fourteen kind of back. Comex lines up picking up show matter ours, X, men run and that kind of got me back into COMEX. And from that, I mean, I'd say through the kind of light nineteen hundred thousands. It was basically mobile for me X men, fantastic fool thaw enough of so happy when it goes to rock and roll because it's like such a fun goofy character, and then when the mobile movie star come now, we're gonna see on man to catch like a preview screening about three or four weeks before it came out just on the off Jones replied to an Email about something. And just like blew me away. They managed to catch it. It's you know, like the coma. Kness of it. But notes in a kind of cheesy way or kind of kitschy way, it was just like his straight superhero movie. And it's amazing, and yeah that was kind of it for me, and like I've seen promotional the mobile movies in the cinema and carry on going to see him because that just fun. There's a bad one. I don't know how that's happens. How did you get into the world of pop culture art and working with studios and films? Well, being an illustrates of fool gone sixteen years now since graduated. And I was doing book covers notorial work and I did somewhat gallery. Ninety nine hundred abou- must have been getting on ten eleven years ago. Now, one of the pieces, I did them roll Mitch ultra soul. And so they go in touch with me an awesome. But wanted to have a go the movies. I like the look all did Ron Johnson's break. That was like my first suggestion of film and loves and they just said, yeah. Do that. So did happy with Ron was happy with it. I was happy with it sold well on from then it's spice just being a continual stream of work like I haven't still working with Mondo for the past six years. Now, it's my dream job. What movie studios like twelve year old would be losing his mind?.

"Fourth artists that we talked to is Becky Cloonan Becky is wonderful. I actually I met Becky many many years ago when I was editor was her magazine. And I worked on a section about independent comics and a book that she had worked on back in the day that was one of our of that month. So it was cool talking about that with her and then talking about just all the stuff she's done working with Steve Dillon, which was a really fun part of this conversation that she and I dig into but her piece was for marvel studios. Thor Becky Cloonan. Hello. How are how are you? Good. So we're here Mondo part of the big marvel studios tenth anniversary gallery show. And you've got a piece what your piece, and how did you get to be a part of this? I did for the first movie, and I was actually just rubbed Jones. Just emailed me when daylight how do you feel about or and I was like, he's great. That's how I got into. Rob Jones, creative director of the creative directors here. What was your first piece for Mondo in general? It was cabinet of Dr category. Actually, kind of a weird one. It's not weird. I guess, but it's a little old. So one of the things we always like to ask here on the show is what is your marvel origin story. How'd you first got connected to the characters and the universe? When I was very young. I would see like I think eight years old. My dad had got some silver, surfer comics and like read them to me as bedtime stories. So that was kind of my intro. And then I think to his dismay I became like really obsessed with comics and started, you know, every time we were at the grocery store, and this is going to date myself a little bit they'd spent a Rex this was at a time. When you couldn't get every issue, and I lived in a small town in New Hampshire where it was like, I was lucky if I could get to consistent issues or an issues that were like initial heart even so sometimes I'd be reading these stories with like three or four issues in between not knowing what happens all you get the editors know, you're like what happened in this. You never know. And so I would start making it up in my head. And I think that's kind of where might inherent desire like Tolstoy. Came from. So how did you get into actually making comics? I had always made comics I can just high school in middle school. I had I would just make comics a friend of mine, and I heard I would do stories together on computer paper. I don't think it was. I was like seventeen when I I figured out that they actually on big, you know, and I was like, oh, I gotta get like professional tools like archive links. And and then I went to college frenemy. You'd see how well that worked out. Have you done any automated stuff? Yeah. I worked on the film super troopers. I love super troopers. Yeah. It's great your mind. I had the super troopers boys at marvel h q. For the second movie. Tremendous hilarious did that emission in the story boards for that film to. So that was my first and last animation like ever..

"Work and more about you. You can follow me on Instagram or Twitter at. One hundred soft easy, very easy guy. For sure. All right up next. We're gonna have Oliver Barrett. He did a marvel studios, captain, America's civil war poster, which is awesome. Like looking at that up close the detail. He puts into it. It's fluid piece of art. You gotta check it out on marvel com- or on on does website and his social media. He's really cool though. Great, dude. Hopefully, we're going to have him by marvel again, give them a little tour. But he was neat. Check him out. Right now. Oliver for joining us. So we're here we're in the Mondo space. What is your poster? And how did you get to be part of this gallery show? I did a poster for captain America's civil war, and I was super excited to find out that was the film that I was assigned because I feel like of all the pre Infinity ward films. This is the film that closely resembled like how I felt like an eleven year old kid, I'm gonna take all my action figures, I'm gonna mash them all together and just make them beat the crap out of each other. So it was a super good fit. But also is really tough because it's like how do you make a poster for this movie? That's not the same thing. All the key art where you've got the heroes on one side, and it sort of like a west side story like dudes on one side like this on the other side like this. So we kind of threw bunch of stuff at the wall. And it was like, okay, who's right? Who's wrong in a scenario because you have all these heroes that are fighting against each other. And there's good guy in a bad guy. But there's not here because they're all technically. So the. Idea was to take every hero in the movie pair them off and have a version where one guys winning and the other guys losing vice versa. And it was a lot of drawing. But it looks gorgeous came really well. It's very striking. Like the plan was not have it feel like a choreographed like summer blockbuster superhero fight, but more like, WalMart and black Friday type. It was one of those things where it's like, this is a great idea. And it was like this is a terrible idea draw. So you say you through a bunch of stuff at the wall. Did you have a bunch of different versions? You were thinking of I think like that was sketch numbered eleven, but the thing was is all ten before that we're like okay at best like it was still a lot of stuff. That's resembling. The key are which is always something and trying to avoid because working with Mondo is like a really really great opportunity for any artist and try to make the most out of that by doing something has my own voice. My own spin on it rather than just being like, I'm going to take these studio assets and put them all together into collage. And there's nothing wrong with that. But it's just I wanted to put my own flavor on what is your marvel origin story? How did you? First get connected to the characters the stories our universe. I lived in a neighborhood that had not a ton of kids in it. But enough, and I made friends with the guy that live down the street and his older brother had this binder full of cards. And I'm like what the heck is this? These aren't baseball cards basketball cards. I think the first one I saw. Have been cable or something like that?.

"Before Costco's Costco's price club and price club used to have these comic packs, it was a marvel pack. It would have like I think like fifteen issues, and she would buy it for me. And then I would just tear through all them, and whatever comics I really liked then go to the comic bookstore, and then try and buy all the back issues that I could grow up a group in Santa Barbara, California. A lot of good comic shops out in for sure to find that can feed that hunger. My mom was a children's book illustrator an artist in her own, right. And she used to do trade shows if a comic vendor was there or marvel was there. She would buy me graphic novels of stuff and bring them back to me. So I wouldn't have to buy all the back issues. So I'd like the daredevils born again, which I read when I was nine years older. I mean, those pretty heady stuff or nine year old. I have a very fond memory of reading punish your world journal six and seven that have wolverine vs punisher super violent intense. I was seven or eight years old look at how I turned out. It's all going to be fine for sure. So how did you get into the pop culture art working with different studios and films and stuff like that? I worked as a graphic designer primarily for a very long time. And I put drawing kind of on the back burner and then in the mid odds, there's a big boom around Los Angeles with pop culture are getting prominence in. So these galleries igniting eighty eight were starting to pop up, and they were having these big themed group shows that were all revolved around things that I grew up loving whether it was like TV shows or movies, or whatever. And I would look at those shows get so envious because I wanted to participate, but I didn't have any work to give them, you know, that I was like insecure to show anybody. And so I finally just like really dial down having a portfolio, and I sent this portfolio out till like all my favorite galleries. And I said, here's who I am. This is the art. I do I love the work that shows that you guys I'd love to participate and almost all of them replied to me with offers this shows to be in. And so I started a partic-. Leading in these gallery shows the first big one. I did I think it was like an Edgar right retrospective show. That was a gallery nineteen eighty eight. And so it was like a hundred different pieces of Sean, the dead and Hoffa's are and people really seem to like the work that it was doing. And so it just kind of snowballed from there. Like, I said I wanted to be a combo artist. When I was a kid, but I couldn't do it. Because I wasn't good enough for that kind of style. You know, so it's really cool to be able to find some way to participate. Yeah. And it's amazing. Because now we're here at the Mondo gallery more this tenth anniversary celebration of everything that marvel studios has done, and you've got a really cool piece..

And he showed me sketchbook. That's changed my mind. Some new straighter changed completely might my mind and. I can say I was over influenced by him. And he was being a major influence over these years. Big follower. Have you seen him or talked to them? Eighteen years ago. But I mean, I believe he's still in Mexico City. You get to see him. Yeah. It's never ending struggle. Because the fans are the ones that open bookstores. There are very few comic bookstore. So probably you don't have the latest thing over the most great inventory, but not. No. And he did the ironman piece who was the first one that they revealed for this show as they put it on their postcards and all the advertisements for the event. And it was really neat. He was lovely. And he's a big Bertha romo's fan. You'll find out right now. How you doing fine? Thank you. I'm excited because we're here in Austin. It's only my second time at the Mondo gallery. But we're here because you have a piece in the marvel studios. I ten years show. What's your piece? Oh, my business. I ramon. If there's one. It's great because guys gave me we'll be title. And if they led him at use I will choose that one. So it was a really cool coin to them. It was my favorite movie from the and they get ten years on. It's still your favorite favorite. What makes it still your favorite? That movie is something that you didn't see at that time superhero films, and on my very ignorant opinion. I think twenty star is debris heart of the. Do that that perform that? So I remember we were in the movie theater, the whole marvel company for the first screening of it in New York City, and we're all like, okay. This could be great be really hopeful. And then it finished, and we're all like, oh my God. This is the best thing ever. It was. It was incredible. And it's still like you say resonates even to this day. Now, you're designed we've seen it that's sort of been the promotional art for this show. How did you come up with that particular design of Tony working at the forge? That was particularly hard because it's been ten years from that movie. And it's been a lot of amazing artwork. And. I want to go with something simple, but our full, and I know the one of the most biggest night can the of the movie, but I went to avoid the are more in order to get into Tony stark, especially indicate seem when he has that it be funny. She building a Narmer for the outside what he need to rewire himself when the inside in order to to get that transformation. Yeah. He was a very different person. And that was what I want to do one the big Tony stark Cameron in very simple strong way. It's very iconic to one of those pieces in that film that sticks in your head. Yeah. Holding the hammer getting his hands dirty. Yeah. A lot of things happening in his hat in his moral compass same time, he's hammering in for Jim. I wasn't to put that in the posters. Yeah. So what what was the process for you? Do you do sketches thumbnails designed like multiple versions, or did you just have it right away? Well will be seen it like two times. So I have a pretty good story of the scenes, and I re watch the movie take notes and Sambol mcginnis catch Dan is saying to Mondo guys they give him feedback is back and forth pros. Yeah. They totalled freedom. And that's it's ninety five percent of the stuff that I put in the sketch. What you can see in the final artwork. It's pretty amazing too. Especially with more studios marvel being so big and everything's so icon of having that freedom, and then it working so nice. It's a lot of it's great. What's your like origin story with marvel? How did you first get exp-? Posed to the characters in the my very first moment is six tombs. I watch home Saturday mornings. And I did that from when I was five years to fifteen years not only a child I was enjoying that cartoons. I used to live in Mexico City. So there was a lot of reruns of the show for ten years. The same. Suits were running running all over again, all the Saturday morning. So that was my first broached due tomorrow, all the captain America the man for and that care, be styled. The finally a lot straight or. And. And after that I stood in graphic design and Dan. I met, but at the Meuse, which is one of the biggest comic celebrities all over the world. Not only Mexico. But things just God. We could do we could totally diversify getting soundtracks be easy. It was not easy. And we start off with a couple of records that we had easy access to who are relationships with directors. And then we had a bit of a low, and then this wealth recording me came out and started killing it and that just put a far unrest's start going to harder at it. It's a his pieces, and it's super exciting to see his take on on the guardians. So yeah, it's also collaborative with the artists in general kind of reaching out and saying, hey, what are your favorite films? We're doing marvel gallery show. How long have you been working together? Rob is one of the co founders and creative directors of the company's. He's been around since the beginning days of Mondo, I joined the company in two thousand eleven so I've known Robin worked a prop for the better part of seven years now how did Mondo begin? And if we have some listeners who don't know a lot about Mondo, what is mongo is a collectible. And I know now it's so wide and crazy so different from what it started from. We're basically just a place that makes cool stuff. That's probably a boils down to what we might posters, soundtracks games, collectibles, statues and pins anything that we're like, oh, we'll be awesome. If we and then we try that blink every day every day. It was really born out of the gig. Poster seeing the kind of rock poster that's the world that rob comes from. And you know, the idea Alamo draft house, which is our parent company. They had the sightsee of wanting to do this rolling roadshow series where they show films and conical. Locations so escape from Alcatraz at Alcatraz, for example, like that kind of the idea of doing poster out of like, well, let's do a poster for these events for these shows. And then that's just raw. Raw me to make one poster that would cover the entire event didn't want individual posters. That was the thing. Oh, they just wanted an event posters. Just to advertise. The whole rolling roadshow aspect. I had some ideas for it that we're like making an icon free movie looking like one of those bad roadside attractions, like the giant Paul Bunyan. But making doctors as but I looked at it. I was like this is not the best way to advertise. This look I really want to get my friends because I know what they could possibly do. It's not what I would do and to Stu like a good post for each movie and Tim league said, well, if you can make that happen at the same budget. Go ahead. Although he did increase the budget a little bit after I showed a few results, and those went really well and just kept pestering the guy to hey, we should make posters for this event. That event this event. Tarantino coming QT's, six six t posters. Great is this guy named Tyler stout? He's doing some great work. I think he'd be a good higher. The first time, and it just us slowly built up until finally just exploded over the place. But that was that was what attracted me as a fan, and as someone who like their ears perked up when I saw this. This is a really holy kind of unique. And original way of seeing something that I've been exposed to my whole life. And I think that core concept just took an ran with it, and that some movies and movies that have been around for thirty or forty years. You see it in a new way you present it in a new way a lot of that comes from the artists a lot of that comes from the direction on mongo's part. But just looking at it, and it kinda unique fresh perspective and seeing it as a different way than what tends to be the more Hollywood traditional studio posters.
