"I've been feeling a bit fatigued over the course of the last couple of weeks. I think it's seasonal allergies, it's catching that cold, it's been traveling a little bit too much, and I just don't bounce back as well as I used to. It's getting older. But the other day, I thought I was around in the corner with a cold. I woke up on Monday not feeling bad, but decided to work from home feeling good, like, okay, I'm going to work on Tuesday. By the time I got up yesterday morning, that fatigue hit me again. No, I didn't sleep well Monday night, Tuesday morning. So I decided to call the doc in the box and see if they could help me out, give me some medication because this cold has turned into a sinus infection, which I normally do. It's the way they've always worked out. Of course, she was telling me I had COVID, or at least she thought I had COVID because I mentioned the word fatigue. Like, seriously? Now, we automatically think just because a person's fatigued, it's COVID. This doctor doesn't know my life. They just think it checks the box. If you're fatigued, you got COVID. But I waited too long, so no need to take a test now. If I plow through it, I plow through it. I just kind of shook my head. You can't just simply have a cold or the flu or even a sinus infection. We've got to blow it up in something more.

"I bought it to five because I get nervous. And I pounded the Giants because because the line made no sense, not because the line mates. Well, no, I agree with you. I agree with you 100 percent. It should have been a pick. The game should have been a pick. There's no doubt about it. Right. But I bet the Giants, because I know that. The Giants, the Giants can score this bullshit with Tommy DeVito and everyone think it's funny that he's Italian. The Giants can't score. He stinks and the Giants can't score and the Patriots can't score. Matt Jones might be the worst quarterback in the NFL. So if you have two teams that can't score. Why would you not take five points? Yeah. And it's just something that I didn't really give much thought to other than the belief in Bill and the defense going against the Giants, people I know can't score. And by the way, they did turn the ball over three times and still should have tied the game and since it's overtime. But like, I just don't understand that line. And then to have it play out to common sense. Common sense would tell you there's no way the Patriots should be four point favorites over anybody. So here's take the point. No, but here's why they were four and a half point favorites. One, Belichick. There's still some cachet with Belichick to the Patriots still have some national appeal from when they were the Patriots. So you're in New York. So, you know, the I think other, you know, the Giants are pathetic. Like they won the game, but they're pathetic on. Yeah, I know. I know. I know. It's just so it was one of those weird ones where the line usually I try not to get sucked into that. But the line was telling you to to the one was begging you to take the Giants. Usually when I do that, I get burned. So I go the other way and I get burned. See, I didn't I looked at it like neither team can score. So I'm going to take five points. That was my whole that was it. I just want to read these stats because they're unbelievable. Monday night football games this year, the under is 13 and one. Wow. In primetime games, Monday night, Sunday night, Thursday night, the under is twenty nine and nine. And in since Monday night football, since two thousand and nineteen, so the last four seasons, unders fifty eight, twenty eight and one. That's incredible. Get on the under bandwagon. Do you think it's just because the quality of play sucks? Brady was right about that, like quarterbacks. There are no good quarterbacks and quality overall. I think people like to bet overs. People like to bet overs. People want to watch the game and root for points. They don't want to root for the clock to run out. So I think you get a lot of people betting overs. Which makes the number go up. Right. Right. And then I think. Right. And then I think you have. Yeah. What you said that quarterbacks are terrible. Where you get burned sometimes with the unders is the refs when they call these ridiculous 15 yard penalties. So that's that's that's. The college, I know you don't follow the college, but there's been wild stuff with the Iowa football team with unders as well, like their totals every week are like twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven. I actually didn't watch the first quarter of the jet game because I was watching Iowa, Nebraska to see if that game was going to go under twenty five, which I had. That's the total for the game. Yes. What did it end up as? So listen to this. I remember like Kirk Ferentz and Iowa, they never scored a bunch back then. Now it's even worse. Right. So listen to this. Iowa plays Michigan Saturday in the Big Ten title game. OK. Michigan is. Twenty two point favorites. The total is thirty five. So so they think it's going to be thirty to thirty to seven or something. The Iowa team total is six and a half. This is a team playing in a in a in a conference title game. And the bookmakers don't think they will score a touchdown. Now, why is the line only twenty two? Is their defense good? Iowa? Yes, the defense is excellent. That's why the totals are always twenty five, twenty six. Yeah, they have a good defense. They can't score. Michigan has a very good defense like the Jets. Exactly. Well, again, you just you just got to be nervous for the defensive, you know. The fumbles and the defensive nonsense. All right. So that's all I wanted to say about betting. What's going on with the house, hon? Everyone needs to everyone always asks. So what is there you didn't do it because it was Thanksgiving, I assume. Right. There was nothing available this week. Doesn't seem like there's going to be much available. You know, getting down to it here, I'm going to be decision time is coming. Like we have to rent, rent back our house, move, rent something out like I just I just want this to be over. Are you going this weekend? I don't believe so. I don't believe there's anything available or different that's out there yet. Here's what your problem is going to be, too. You know, in a couple of weeks, they start the Saturday games with the NFL. You're going to you're going to miss those if you start house Saturdays. You know, I'm glad you brought that up, because as I was scrolling through the schedule, I was thinking of you last night. Are those those games have not been determined yet. Is that right? Actually, I'm looking at it. It doesn't start. I don't know why this is bizarre. It doesn't start till week 16. Week 16, which is the twenty third of December, the day before Christmas Eve. Wow. That's only it usually starts the week before. I feel like that's what I thought. Yeah. Yeah, that's what I thought. But I'm looking at that. Oh, they said are we what? On the twenty third, they're set. Bengal Steelers. At four thirty and then the Bill's Chargers, eight o'clock, and that Bill's Chargers game is a peacock only game. OK, I thought it was a good game. I'm probably not going to watch either of those. And then on the 17th, there's only which is week seven on the 30th, which is week 17. There's only one Saturday game and it's at night, eight fifteen. It's a good game. Lions and Cowboys. So it's not I think the reason there's not a ton of Saturday games maybe is because Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday. I don't know. Maybe that's what's screwing everything up. So I don't mind. Traditionally, I don't mind those Saturday games. I love a week before Christmas. Yeah. You know what? I don't like I don't like that it's week 13 in the NFL and there's six teams on a buy. The buy should be over by now. The buy should be from like week six to twelve. That should be the buys. It's too late. Why is that? Is that because of the London schedule or the Germany thing? I think that's just how they schedule. OK. And this and you know, the Patriots play in primetime three weeks in a row. The unwatchable. How do we not flex that out? I can't watch Matt Jones or Billy Zappi anymore. I think one game will I think one game will be flexed out. So they play week 14. They play on Thursday night on Amazon Patriots Steelers. I don't think that's going to that can't be flexed because the 28 day window is is done. So they can't flex it the week after. The Chiefs play the Patriots on Monday night. I do think based on what Mike North told me on the pod last week, they're going to flex that out and they're going to put in Eagle Seahawks. Because Eagle Seahawks right now is a four twenty five game in week 15. But it's not going to any part of the country because at four twenty five that week is Cowboys bills. So Eagle Seahawks is getting buried. So to unbury it, they might flex it with Chiefs Patriots on Monday night. What about Giants, Packers Monday night? Part of the double header, I think. I think now with the Packers beating the Lions, it's not going to get flexed. And I guess maybe because of the. I was going to say Danny DeVito, Tommy DeVito stuff, but more because more because of.

"Where are those guys in the NFL? And is it because you have to adjust to the play comes in to your helmet and it's not signaled in, you're not getting up to center, clapping your hands, looking at the sideline, and then you get a bunch of hand signals like college ball, right? Where are those guys coming in and succeeding in the NFL? We're going to need that in the next few years, like a group of about eight or 10 of them, because finding a quarterback continues to prove to be the hardest thing. And there's a real lack of patience. I'm excited to see Jordan Love this week because Jordan Love did the Green Bay plan, sat three years. Didn't have a great start this year, but they've got a ton of rookies. Guess what? On Thanksgiving, Jordan Love looks pretty good. Maybe, maybe that's the way to do it and nobody's doing it anymore. I don't know what the answer is, but I think that's the big, big picture issue for the play on the field for the NFL over the next couple of years. I agree. I agree. I think with NFL as lucky as I do think those top tier quarterbacks, Mahomes, Burrow, Hertz, I'll even put Allen there. They're also very likable. They're not just great on the field. They're all very, very likable. I mean, if you don't like Joe Burrow or Patrick Mahomes, I mean, Jalen Hertz, I mean, they're likable players too. So that's why I think the Burrow injury is almost a double whammy. You miss him on the field. You miss his greatness. And he's a guy that's just so easy to like and root for and watch. So the Burrow... There aren't many villains, right? Right. Right. Not in that level. I agree with you. No, no, no. It's a good point. I agree with you. And that comes through when you meet with these guys too. You know, there's a polish and a quality about each of them, maybe different qualities about each of them that you're like, oh, that guy does well. People often ask, well, who do you root for? I tend to root for the people who are really good, who work hard, right? The guys who are the first in, last out have put the time to task, to grow their ability. The guys who you watch come in the league and grow as leaders and you meet with them two, three times a year for four, five, six, seven years. And you're like, man, it's been fun to see. And that's just what appeals to me. I like to see the coaches and the players who are like that. It doesn't mean you're standing there with pom-poms in front of the TV saying, I hope you win. But you walk out of the stadium and say, you know, it's good for that guy because he did it the right way. And it kind of shows in the results. Right. It's, you know, it's, I cover this, I'm in it. So, um, my mentality, I'm just, it blows my mind that people think that announcers are rooting for anything other than a close game, like, or even a good game. You know, I mean, it was, I thought it was great on Monday night when the game ended and Joe said, you know, that's it from Minnesota that, you know, the game's over and Troy goes, thankfully, you guys just want a good game. Like that's, I think, listen, you have meetings with players, you might like this player, this guy gives you, but overall you guys want a close game, a competitive game and not, you know, what we saw on Monday night or on Friday afternoon. Yeah. I started saying this when I was calling the NBA and it carries over to the NFL as well. All I personally want out of every game is the ball is in the air. The clock says zero and where it comes down decides who wins or loses. Then the three and a half hours we all invested together has been worth it. Uh, the, we are the announcer for the home team and the road team and the fan who doesn't care and the fantasy player and the better.

I am Matt Verderam alongside Gilberto Manzano as always here in the midweek edition of the show. We've got a lot to get to because last week might have given us the best slate of games we're gonna have all week long. We had four games that everybody thought were gonna be great and as it turned out, three of them were pretty good. One of which was a blowout. We'll get to all them here in a minute then of course we have our week 10 lines of five games that we're gonna focus on from our SI Sportsbook odds and then from there we also have the midseason awards that we have to get to as we are halfway home in the 2023 NFL season. Before we get to all that, let's welcome the other man of the tandem, Gil, what's going on man? How you been? Yeah, I'm doing well. Matt, as you know, I like to brag about my wins and complain about my losses and last week was a good week. I went 12 -2 with the picks but I am pretty disappointed that I betted against Joshua Dobbs. What a game, right? Unbelievable. I'm annoyed. You went 12 -2, I went 11 -3 and I feel like 11 -3 should have given me some bragging rights for the week and yet it did not happen. So I will say on the whole, our group, yourself, myself, Connor, Orr, Albert Breer, Mitch and John our editors and Claire, another editor of ours as well that does great work, I feel like everybody's picks have been really pretty good this year. There are some years you look at picks and go, oh my god, I'm barely above 500. Right now, I've got the sheep pulled up in front of me, so the best record is Albert who's 95 -41, went 11 -3 last week and then after that, Claire Kawana is right behind him with 92 wins and then in gold it says 87 wins and then it's myself, yourself, John and then Connor Orr at 75 and 65 pulling up the rear, so Connor's got to step up. Connor is bringing down the credibility of this entire group. That's not bad for last play, so 10 games over 500? His thing is, we all do our upset picks and he's done 50 upset picks. I think I've done like 16. So that's part of the reason, but yeah, the picks are good and of course people that want to can read those over at SI .com, we put them out every week. The editors are nice enough to put that together. All right, so last week, like I said, we had some great games. We had Chiefs Dolphins over in Germany and then we had Ravens, Seahawks, which we thought would be a great game, turned out to be a massacre, Late Window, Cowboys, Eagles, which was one of the wildest games I can remember seeing in quite some time and then of course we had Bills, Bengals at the end, the Sunday night game there and so like I said, we'll get to all those. Let's just start with how the day actually started. Over in Frankfort, Chiefs build up a 21 -0 lead on Miami. Miami comes back, makes it 21 -14. They had a couple drives at the end where they could have tied the game, even taken the lead if they went for two. They got into Kansas City territory both times, but both times ended up going backwards, lose the game. They dropped to 6 -3. Chiefs, of course, improved to 7 -2. Both teams go on their bye weeks. I'll So, let you set the stage here, Gilberto. What is it to you, is it more about the Dolphins that game or is it more about the Chiefs? It is more about the Dolphins because they can't beat a team with a winning record and don't tell me the Chargers are .500 and the Dolphins beat them. They barely got to .500, so I am concerned about the Dolphins, but I don't want to let the Chiefs off the hook, Matt, and I know you've been writing about this, but the Dolphins have been pretty average. It got to a point where now Mahomes is saying, yeah, we sting. We're pretty bad. Go talk about the defense. That defense is carrying us the entire season. You know what's kind of funny, Matt? This season, it feels like the team with the best defense might win the Super Bowl, and the Chiefs still have the best defense right now, it feels like, so it's kind of a weird irony, but you expect better from Mahomes and Kelsey, but the wide receivers, they can't create separation. And it wasn't for that awesome fumble, reverse play, whatever it was from Cook there. They would have probably lost a game there, but what's going on with the Dolphins offense? Averaging 17 points against the Bills, Eagles, and the Chiefs, so I go with the Dolphins there because I feel like the Chiefs could figure it out. It's halfway point in the season, they're just cruising by, and I think something will finally break out there, but I'll let you maybe talk about the Chiefs a little more. But the Dolphins, man, you're supposed to be the most explosive offense, highest scoring, and you can't even get a first down. It's like, do they have too many home run hitters? Too many touchdown makers? How about some chain movers? How about some first down people? How about some quick outs, and just get four or five yards, and everything just feels like a home run, and they don't adjust, and they don't kind of make end game adjustments because credit to the Chiefs, and Tyreek Hill said it too, they covered, there was great coverage on Tyreek Hill, so it's kind of one of those games where like, why not get a tight end that can help you out here? Why not get some guys that can make it easier? How about go to Raheem Oster a little more? He had like 12 carries, and he's averaging 7 .1 yards per carry, so I don't know what's going on with Mike McDaniel on two, and two was pretty bad in that second half there. Yeah, he had the touchdown to Cedric Wilson, but make some adjustments, Mike McDaniel, and stop going for the home run ball, Tua. Yeah, look, first of all, I agree, I think the Dolphins are the bigger storyline coming out of the game. Like, they've now played three really good teams, and they've lost all three of them, and they came back against Kansas City, but they were getting killed in that game too. They were 21 -0 midway through the third quarter, and frankly, if Chris Jones doesn't take one of the dumbest personal fouls you've ever seen, it's probably 21 -7, and we're having a different discussion. I think your point though, man, is good with the Dolphins in the sense of like, there's timing strung off. They're just dead in the water. They have no answer for it, and we've seen that now multiple times, this year and last year. Kansas City basically said, we're going to get up on the line of scrimmage, we're going to get our hands on Tyreek Hill, we're going to reroute them, we're going to cause problems. Look, who knows them better than the Chiefs, right? I mean, they know what can cause some issues, and they actually went back and watched practice tape of a couple years ago to try to figure out how to stop them. They went back and watched how they worked against him in team drills and practice, and tried to figure out some things, and it obviously worked. But from the Chiefs' angle of this, listen, the offense is a disaster, okay? They had 46 yards in the second half of the game in a turnover. But they're 7 -2 in the number one seed in the AFC because the defense is incredible, and they're just shutting people down left and right. If you go and look this year at teams that have played the Chiefs, nobody's thrown for 300 yards. Kirk Cousins came the closest. He was up in the higher 200s because he threw a million passes. But if you look at Gough's numbers, 253 yards, one touchdown, which was a good game. That was without Chris Jones that week. Trevor Lawrence, they didn't score a touchdown. He threw 41 times for 216 yards. Justin Fields threw for 99 yards. Zach Wilson, of all people, had one of the best days against him, 245 and two touchdowns. That game. wild And then you had Cousins, who went for 284 and two touchdowns on 47 attempts. Russell Wilson threw for 95 yards one game, and in the other game, the game that they won, he threw for 114. These teams, two I didn't throw for 200 yards. Nobody's throwing for yardage against them. They're second in the league in sacks, the first in pressure rate. They've got two elite corners in McDuffie and Sneet, and so, look, the question with Kansas City is obvious. Can this offense get going? Because if the offense gets going, they're probably the best team in the NFL. I mean, if they get even borderline top -10 production out of that offense, forget it. They have the week now to scout. I was texting with some people around the team, and I think there's a general thought of like, look, it's a bunch of little things that are throwing off the whole thing. Question is, how many of those little things can you fix in the next couple of months? The good news is you have Mahalem, you have Kelsey, you've got a good offensive line, you've got Andy Reid. The bad news is they have you and me at receiver. So, I mean, that's the question. My guess? They'll fix it to an extent. I don't think it's going to be a unit that you'll look at and go, oh my God, they're incredible. I think it's probably going to be a top -10 unit right around there at the end of the year. They're in the mix, but yeah, I agree, man. The Dolphins are definitely the thing that you'll look at right now, and the team you'll look at right now and go, all right, you're going to make the playoffs, but what are you going to do when you get there? Are you going to beat somebody good, or is there going to be a one -and -done? Matt, let me ask a quick question, because you watch this team closely, and I think I watch them good enough because they're always on prime time, but all these analytics people are saying, look at the EPA, look at the DVOA. They're top five in offense in all these categories, and I'm like, I get it. You keep showing me the numbers, but I keep watching the games, and the wide receivers are not that great. They're not scoring points. They had nine points against Denver, so I don't know what it is. Maybe when you said disaster, I'm like, okay, cool, because I was trying to play it safe. Maybe they're average because there's something here that I'm missing with the DVOA and the EPA. They're a disaster by their standards. By anyone else's standards, yeah, they're probably still an above -average offense, but by their standards, they're a train wreck. I will say this. People forget it because they won the Super Bowl last year. They were somewhat of a train wreck offensively the first half of last year, too. They had a bunch of games last year. They lost to the Colts last year. They muddled through a Chargers game that they ended up winning because of a pick -six that went 99 yards the other way. They struggled offensively against the Bills. They ended up beating the Raiders on a Monday night last year, but they were down 17 -0, and they needed to come back in that game. They were not good offensively for stretches of last season, and then they're them. In January, they cranked it up, and that was it. Even on one ankle, Mahomes did enough to win. But this has been the year before that. They were 3 -4 at the beginning of the year. They couldn't score a point in that season. That was the year Mahomes played, again, by his standards, not by anybody else's, but by his standards. He played poorly. You go to 2021, and they lost in the AFC title game. They were 3 -4, and then people say, oh, well, then they came out of it. They did in terms of that they won games. Their point totals after that 3 -4 start, they won 20 -17, 13 -7. Then they blew the Raiders out, scored 41, 19 -9, 22 -9. The last couple of years, they've had stretches like this, but by their standards, they're a disaster offensively right now. By the NFL's standards, they're probably somewhere between 10 -12th in the league offensively. So, got to take it for what it's worth. Yeah. All right. Let's get to the next game here. The Bengals and the Bills will go right to Sunday Night Football, speaking of a team that by their standards is an offensive disaster, despite what EPA will tell you. I'm not here to bag on the analytics, guys. I will tell you this. I'm a big eye test guy. You watch the Bills. My eye test, I don't care that they're fourth or whatever in EPA offensively. They have not been good over the last month and change. I don't think there's any way to say that otherwise. They go to Cincinnati. They made it a little bit closer at the end, but they were down 24 -10 with a few minutes left. They score a touchdown. They get the two, but they can't get the ball back. The Bengals now, 5 -3. Winners of four straight playing like we expected them to play at the beginning of the year. The Bills are 5 -4. It has been a struggle for them. They started the year 3 -1. Since then, they're 2 -3 going in the other direction. They have a very hard schedule. We'll get to that in a moment. What was your main takeaway from that Bengals -Bills game? Just the difference in quarterback play between Joe Burrow and Josh Allen and how to cover that game. I wrote about it. I kept seeing Joe Burrow moving around the pocket and extending plays. Then I look at the boxer, I'm like, wait, he has four rushing yards? I thought he ran for a bunch of yards. I know he had that one where he had the first down kind of signal. It's just when pressure comes, he knows how to move. It's smooth. It's not like he has to speed it up. He just says, okay, cool. You're right there, but I'm still going to do what I have to do and just extend plays. Matt, when it's Drew Sample and Tanner Hudson and Erskine Jr., Trenton Irwin, these guys are making plays. Then you look at Josh Allen, when the pressure comes, it looks difficult. It's chaotic. He has to kind of see what's out there and then, okay, force a throw or miss a throw. I get the Bengals defense is better than the Bills defense, so Burrow had maybe an easier time, but there was pressure. He was fighting pressure. I get it. The second there is not as good there, but it just seems harder for Josh Allen.

The Financial Guys
A highlight from The Impact of Safety on Economic Activity
"Here's the taxpayers, just like, well, as long as I can have my little bat blue, and I can go watch the bills. Well, wait till you start getting price out of that. Don't don't get involved. I'm amazed at the amount of people that bitch about things but actually do nothing to get involved to help right. Alrighty, welcome back. Mike Lomas, Ron Rheinstein in studio with us today. Well, hopefully, as always, we'll just pop around and go over. We're actually going to talk a little bit of economics too, but the place where money meets politics. And if you need us throughout the week, folks, 833 -FIN -GUYS. Ron, where do you want to start? You put together a bunch of stuff here. We can talk about the economy, GDP numbers. According to the Democrats, everything is hunky -dory. It's great. Sunshine and roses. Sunshine and roses. Although there's still snow on the ground. I know. There is snow on the ground. That was a little bit depressing. My kids were happy. Like, oh my god, it's so pretty. Yeah, when we were driving back from Wilson with Halloween for our kids, excuse me, you just start to see that I'm like, yeah, that's not rain. And then I think by the time I took the dog out for the last time, I was like a little bit after 10, I'm like, yeah, that's... Well, you're right on the border with me. Yeah, where you get pounded. Yeah, usually it's funny because usually the officer, we get very little. None. Well, I would say none, but not much. No, not even close to the soutouts. Not like what we get. Yeah, but I think everybody got a little bit of dusting. Yeah, no, I mean, as you look at the economy and where, you know, they're all high -fiving, popping bottles of champagne and, you know, the U .S. GDP, according to their figures, rose by 4 .9 percent. The, you know, also exceeding expectations of 4 .5. But yet, if you look around, folks just, not even just in western New York, but just overall, where savings are in decline, inflation has not slowed, contrary to what these maniacs are going to claim. Disposable personal income, again, according to their data, contracted by 1 percent, which isn't good. Yeah, yeah. And the biggest driver of this GDP growth has been government spending. Well, government spending, and I think we forget about the rebound of COVID. Yeah, I mean, we literally destroyed the economy. All kinds of businesses and some of these business owners that you and I work with on a daily basis are still trying to struggle to get back, which means they're, you know, some of these business owners that got into, hey, I worked 60, 70 hours, I got my restaurant to where I thought it needed to be, I could take a little time back, you know, maybe I'm back to 40 hours a week or spending some time with family. They are now back to 70, 80 hours a week, struggling to try to make up for the extra loans they had to take out to survive and that means more risk, more, so when I see, oh boy, the economy is like, well, yeah, a huge part of that, a huge part of that is these business owners trying to rebuild from COVID. And you even, driving around, this is Monday night, I was, I got home a little bit later, the amount of restaurants, like, because I don't know, like, I went a different route than I normally did when on my way home, but there's a lot of places still closed. Oh yeah, for sure. It's not a seven -day work week. No. With restaurants, other businesses. Well, we measure success here in Erie County by if something opens. We don't actually look at the overall picture and say, okay, are we growing? Like, let's compare it to, I don't know, Florida. Yeah. Where there are very few vacant properties. They can't build fast enough. No, they can't build fast enough. That's exactly right. And interstates are expanding because I know you guys are on the east coast and for, god, I can't believe I'm saying this now, but like for over 30 years, my family's been on the west coast. And when you take 70, or when we took 75 back 30 years ago, it was a two -lane interstate in each direction. Now, every time we go down there again, because we have family friends that are down there, I have, you know, relatives that are in Sanibel, so you still take 75 when you fly to Tampa, they keep adding lanes. They keep growing the interstate. Why is that? Yeah, well, millions of people relocating for freedom, by the way, for freedom. For freedom. So many clients are like, you know, I don't really like the heat in the summer, but boy, I do like the fact that the, you know, the feeling of, hey, if another COVID was to hit, if the Chinese decided to stir up another flu, I don't feel like I'm going to lose my business. I don't feel like I'm going to lose my freedom. Yeah, I don't need to show my jab card to exist in society. Yeah, no, and by the way, another young girl died the other day. I got 33.

I am Matt Verteram alongside Gilberto Manzano, as is the case every single Wednesday. And Gilberto, look, first things first. Here's the good news. We still have our jobs. The bad news is some people with the Raiders do not. Now, maybe if you're a Raiders fan, maybe that's not bad news. Maybe that's great news. I don't know. I'm not I'm not part of Raider nation. I would imagine that the frustrations at an all time high. You have covered the Raiders in the past as a Team Beat guy. They are now looking at Antonio Pierce as their interim head coach because Josh McDaniels is gone. Dave Ziegler gone as the general manager. And so we'll see who takes over that post eventually. This is not exactly new to the Raiders. This has been a revolving door, whether it was Jack Del Rio at one point, a head coach, or it was John Gruden or it was Tony Soprano or it was, I mean, on and on and on and on, you know, Mike Mayock at GM. And you can just keep filling in the names. None of them lasted that long. And so now the Raiders mid -season firing, of course, because it's happened with Gruden under different circumstances. Gruden, essentially, they had to move off of immediately. McDaniels are moving off of because he just flat can't coach. What are your thoughts on the Raiders and what happened essentially at like midnight for most of the country, these two out the door? Yeah, you know, I'll start there. It was like, I think, 10 p .m. on the West Coast. So, you know, I was still up trying to enjoy the last couple hours of Halloween. And Matt, I was watching the original Friday the 13th. I was carving a pumpkin. I had like maybe, you know, 50, you know, chocolate bars. You know, I was stuffed and I saw this from Adam Schefter. And I'm like, oh, okay. I was a little surprised. Mark Davis actually did it 25 games into the hiring of Josh McDaniels, which I think we all could say, yeah, it was a bad hiring a year and a half ago. But shocking that Mark Davis actually did it before the second year was over. And this guy, what, a month ago told a fan at SoFi Stadium, smart enough, smart enough, you can't fire Josh McDaniels. And all of a sudden you're the one that got smart enough. OK, I don't know. I have a lot of emotions about that, you know, the way it played out. But, you know, I wanted to give you my reaction about how I caught this on Halloween Eve. And I'm sure people on the East Coast, you're two hours ahead of me, Matt. So I don't know if you caught it right away, but a lot of people were sleeping and they woke up. So you probably like at midnight, OK, what the heck happened here? But I'll start there. I was just shocked that Mark Davis did it, but it was a right call. I Yeah, figured you'd do it after the season. But it's funny because I was assigned the Monday night game. And so the Raiders are playing the Lions and I'm sitting there and I'm thinking, like, what can I write about this game? I mean, the Lions are just rolling up and down the field. But like I've written about the Lions. I've been in a few of their games this year in person. I was like, look, there's not I feel like we're not learning anything about the Lions. They're a good team. And the Raiders are sitting there in Grappola, throwing for like 40 yards through three quarters and just hideous football. Adams is frustrated. McDaniels is just looking at his face like he knows the end might be near. And I said to our editor, John Bloom, I said, you know. How about I just write a piece that I just say they should fire McDaniels and just bench Garoppolo and be done with this? And we then both kind of agreed like, well, that's all right. You know, it's early. We'll pass on it, whatever. And we ended up not writing anything about the game because the game is kind of just a non story. And I was joking with John this morning. My God, we should have wrote that piece would have been the most prescient people in the country. I didn't think it was going to happen the next day. But I mean, what a what a just absolute tire fire. Look, Josh McDaniels. Is a terrible head coach, and he showed that in Denver, like he not only was bad in Denver, he ran guys out the door. You know, Jay Cutler gone, Brandon Marshall gone. Josh McDaniels from afar has the syndrome of being the smartest guy in the room. And he's not the smartest guy in the room. Not saying he can't be a coordinator. Had plenty of success as a coordinator with Brady. And I don't know if he could be a coordinator without Tom Brady. He had plenty of success with him. Josh McDaniels was a disaster in Denver. He quit on the Colts before he even got started with the Colts. And now you look at this Raiders tenure. They never got any traction. They blew a million big leads last year. They went six and 11 after making the playoffs. I might add the year prior. Runs their car out of town, runs Darren Waller out of town. Hunter Renfro is barely playing. And now you're sitting here in the three and five, and they're not even as good as a three and five record would indicate. They have not played well all year long. I just think the Raiders going forward here. It now becomes a matter of. How do you fix the process of finding the right guys? Because Mark Davis has not found the right guys over and over and over like this starts with him. You could fire the coach in the GM all you want. Mark Davis has been a failure of an owner since he took over for the late great Al Davis, of course, his father. That's where this thing starts. Like, does he bring in an outside firm to do these hirings? Because I think that's where this has to go at this point. He has proven he cannot make these hirings with any kind of success rate. Yeah, man, you know, I'm concerned about, you know, Mark Davis just, you know, being kind of a you know, he cares about what the public perception is. OK, what are they saying out there? And that's why he went off on that fan. And so if I say I'm saying smart enough and I'm like, why do you care? Let the guy just say whatever he has to say. And then you're the one running the show here. You know, you're the one has to make the smart decision for the team. And yes, he did the right call. Let him go. Josh McDaniel's. But his two last hirings, he wanted a big name. He wanted a big name with John Gruden. You already went down that road. You give the guy a 10 year contract like, you know, I think you want to make you want to make a splash. You're going to Las Vegas like that didn't sit right with me. And obviously that that went sideways for different reasons. And the same thing with Josh McDaniel's. You're going to get headlines regardless. Like, yeah, you know what happened with the Colts briefly with the handshake. And then you bail out and then what happened in Denver? Like these are all red flags for the guy. And you still go because you want to try to copy the picture away. That's the biggest thing right there, man. You can't copy something and try to replicate it. And that's kind of the worst way to do it, too. So, you know, and I'll say this about Josh McDaniel's, because, you know, I guess my rule and I get why you want to write that piece. But and I get what you guys decide is a little too soon, because it did feel a little too soon. But it was a right situation because Josh McDaniel's background is offense. And that is a horrendous offense. I think he's put out there. And reason number two, man, it was his guys. He finally said, you know what, Derek Carr, different regime. Let me get Jimmy G and I don't know what the story is about Jimmy G's being the number one, two or three option. Who cares? You picked them. You brought them in with Dave Ziegler and all these Patriot guys came in. And you're still that bad. Josh Jacobs was a reigning champion a year ago, and he's rushing for like two point four yards per carrier, something pretty bad. So that's your background. And the other the third point, Matt, you always need a scapegoat. And the defense has been playing pretty well. Patrick Graham cannot take the fall when his defense is actually producing. It's your office, your guys. So see you later. Yeah, I mean. I'm to the point with the Raiders. I'm thirty five. I know you're essentially the same age as me. They've sucked my entire life, say, for like three or four years with Rich Cannon. OK, and that's not that sounds like I'm just like taking some cheap shot out. My point is you got to do something differently. I mean, it's some juncture. You know, the Raiders have this weird pride about like who they are. That was great in the 70s and 80s. You there don't should be no pride in who you are now. You've been a losing friend. You've you've been the Lions for 30 years. You've been the Browns. That's who you've been. I mean, everybody talks about the Raiders like this is some unbelievable gold standard of a franchise. Yeah, it wasn't the 70s and 80s. It's not anymore. It hasn't been for a long time. I mean, they have not won a playoff game since the twenty two season. Two thousand and two. You're talking over 20 years now. And most of those years have been non -competitive. And you're now looking at this thing going, all right, look, you need a quarterback, you need a coach, you need a GM. That is that is a lot in a division where you're looking up at Patrick Mahomes and in a conference where you're looking up at not only Mahomes, but at Burrow and Allen and Lawrence and potentially the ascension of Tua and all these other guys. Lamar, right? And all these guys. They have miles to go, which leads me to this. I don't know how you feel about this. We haven't talked about this for a show. At the end of this season, I would trade Devante Adams and I would trade Max Crosby for as much draft capital as I could possibly get, because by the time they're really good, Adams isn't going to be there anymore. And by the time they're really good, I don't know what you're getting out of Max Crosby. Like those guys both fetch first rounders plus right now, maybe even multiple first rounders. Like if I'm them and I'm the GM there, man, I know it's going to be a rough couple of years. I get it. I would trade both those guys for the highest possible value I could get. Yeah. And you know, the concerning part about Mark Davis being so quick with the firing. Like, does he want like a quick fix? Like you think this roster is ready to win now? Yeah, you got Devante, Max Crosby and Josh Jacobs, three guys that are pretty good at the position, but you need a full teardown. Go get the draft picks like you mentioned, Matt. And, you know, and actually do a hiring where you're not trying to copy the old silver and black way or copy the Patriot way. Like find your own identity. Mark Davis, like, like it's been many years now, over a decade, your dad hasn't been around and you know, you can't copy things that you can't go with for the big name. You don't want to try to keep up with your, your, your owner friends and say, look at who I got here. And look how much money I'm getting on Las Vegas. Like the other bad thing too, like seeing the, the, the allegiance state of being taken over by the opposing fans. Like you're, you're the Raiders. You have fans all over your Raider nation. So even that part is really bad for where Mark Davis is doing. So like you mentioned, you know, hire somebody from the outside to help you out because you haven't been doing it right. Credit for owning your mistake and eating the money from the Gruden contract and now with Josh McDaniels, but enough with the copying, the quick fix, like I'm with you a hundred percent tear down this roster. Like, like yesterday, what are the Broncos doing? Keeping all these players, like go get the draft picks and do a full rebuild. So a lot of heads crashing moves. It's weird. Like the dovetail on the Bronx, that's actually a perfect segue into this, this next topic we're going to have here last. I'll say on the Raiders by the way, and all these things enough with the Patriot way, you know what the Patriot way was? It was Belichick and Brady. That's the Patriot way. So unless you're, you're turning back time, 20 years, it's not going to work. The Broncos though, you know, we want to talk about the NFL trade deadline, which of course was on Tuesday, winners and losers go. You did a great piece, man. I'm breaking that all down. I encourage people to check that out. I agree with you. Just about everything you wrote. It was excellent. Um, I sat there and thought the same thing you just said about Denver. What is the point of keeping all these guys like, do they think because they beat the chiefs in that game, that they're a contending team now? I mean, I don't know if, let me save everybody to suspense and drama. I sat through every snap of that football game. If you told me the chiefs had money on Denver, I'd be like, that makes sense. I could see that that was the worst game I've seen them play in the Mahomes era. And I'm not trying to gain away from Denver, but I'm going to be honest. That was not because Denver was some juggernaut in that football game. The Broncos went an average of 33 yards per touchdown drive.

And then our old friend Mike Lombardi, we're gonna talk about the trade deadline in the NFL as well as what team that seemingly looks like their season's almost over might actually jump in the second half of the year. And then last but not least, we're gonna talk Italian movies and Italian TV shows because why not? This is a fun podcast. First, our friends from Pearl Jam. ["PURL JAM"] All right, I'm taping this on Tuesday before the Clippers game on Tuesday night. The Clippers traded for James Harden late night. They tried to do this as late as possible at night when the most possible people were asleep because they were embarrassed by this trade. And they should be because they're the Clippers. They haven't made the finals ever in the history of the franchise, dating back to Buffalo in 1970, talking five and a half decades of bad luck, terrible injuries, mismanagement. We had the Donald Sterling piece of it. We had load management. And in the last couple of years, they've had some of the worst playoff losses of the 21st century. And now they're trading for a guy who's quit on his last three teams. So they decided, you know what, we'll do this in the middle of the night on the East Coast at least. So we'll take the least amount of slack. They were bidding against nobody. There's 30 teams in the league. One of them had James Harden. 28 other teams were like, we're good. And the Clippers said, you know what, we need this guy. We'll still be not nearly as good as Denver, but if we do this, maybe we could lose in either round two or round three, maybe? I just feel like they don't have any draft picks left for the rest of the decade. So they basically traded three picks for James Harden. The worst one was a 2028 unprotected first. Why do this now? Why do this for a team with no other offers? Why bid against yourself? And why not just wait? If you know you're trading basically two and a half picks plus all these expirings they had, why not wait? The league, I don't know if you've watched it the first week, the league is more talented and more loaded than it's ever been, probably in 30 years. And there's a really, really, really good chance that a couple teams that thought they were gonna be good are not gonna be good. Like for instance, Memphis is 0 -4. Or is Memphis gonna go 25 and 57? Probably not. But there's gonna be a couple teams that are just way worse than they expected. And guess what happens after Thanksgiving and in December and in January? Those teams panic. Guys become available. Like what if Toronto is bad? What if they're like, you know what, Pascal Siakam, this just isn't working for us. What if Chicago, who's already had two team meetings, I think, in three games, what if they decide to put Zach Levine on the table? Like you just don't know. What you do know now is that there was only one team bidding for James Harden and the Clippers ended up with him anyway. The other thing, if you're giving up this much for one guy, I better know that I have a chance to actually win the title. And I just don't feel like they do. I went to the game Sunday night. Kawhi, he looks fine. He looks fine. Does he look like the Kawhi from the mid -2010s? No. Does he look like the guy from 2019 Toronto? He does not. He looks like an older playing himself back in the shape version of Kawhi. And if that's your best player, that's just not gonna be enough this year. The Celtics are too good. Denver is too good. Milwaukee has Giannis and Dame. Phoenix has a ton of scoring. Golden State's gonna be really good. They're still not in the mix. So that was my first issue. The second one, who are you getting? Who are you getting in this trade? Where you're getting I .S. Quinn on three teams. You're getting the most disappointing playoff star this century, literally this century. And there's no other person you can put in there. There's nobody who has even half of the qualifications from a playoff disappointment standpoint that this guy does. Zach Lowe came on the Book of Basketball podcast, I think in 2019, we did a James Harden podcast. And in that podcast, which was four years ago, called him the Karl Malone of guards. And I was immediately the most jealous I've ever been of a comparison. Since then, he had the 2020 bubble flame out. Then they had in 2022, the Miami series, which he sucked in. And then in 2023, the Celtic series, this guy, it's an all time resume. And the Clippers who are just playoff futility through and through for the entire franchise history were like, that's the guy. That's the guy that can take the lovable loser Clippers over the top, James Harden. He slows you down. He needs the ball all the time. The Clippers now have Paul George, who succeeds the most when he has the ball. Koulai Leonard, who has perennially succeeded the most when he has the ball. Russell Westbrook, who loves to either have the ball or crash the boards. And now Harden, who needs the ball. See four guys who need the ball. Then Norm Powell comes in, he needs the ball. Bones Holland comes in, he needs the ball. Are we playing with three balls now? No, we're gonna still play with one. James Harden can't guard anybody. That seems relevant. He hasn't played defense in four years.

Just things that have jumped out to us. And then Peter Schrager is gonna come on and talk about the NFL. Do we have a best team? What are we noticing through seven weeks? What can we expect in week eight that will lead to million dollar picks? And that is today's podcast. Let's bring in our friends from Pearl Jam. Here we go. All right, we're taping this. It's almost 10 o 'clock on Thursday night, Pacific time. Rob Mahoney is here from The Ringer NBA and showing TheRinger .com. We stayed up late because these were two good games. We've had three straight days of very entertaining basketball and we gotta start with the biggest story. Kelly Oubre in the Sixers. What a signing that was, he looks great. No, we just watched LeBron versus the Suns. LeBron's 29 minute limit I think is out the window. He played the whole fourth quarter. And then made the two big head down just going to the basket plays at the end. But biggest thing that's jumped out to you in the last three days is what? Lakers wise or just in general? In general. I think a lot of these teams that we expect to be really good clearly have some assembly required. And the Lakers are one of those teams. I think we saw that from the Bucks and the Sixers tonight too. We're seeing it certainly with the first days of the Victor Webinama experience. Everyone is getting up to speed into their rhythms, trying to understand how all these new pieces fit together. Not revelatory for the opening days of the season to feel that way, but I think even some of the stuff that personally I thought was going to be seamless, like the Giannis, Dame pick and roll, there's some kinks in it that they're going to have to figure out over time. Lakers I thought were the one that surprised me on that one because I thought they were one of the teams that were going to have the advantage coming in. You think about last year's team compared to this year's team. It doesn't seem like Reeves is involved enough either game that, I don't want to say he's an afterthought, but it just felt like he was more in the mix in the playoffs last year. And I liked what Schroeder did for them last year and he was good on Toronto last night and really fit in with what they did. So they're going to have to figure out that Vincent D 'Lo thing. Wood was playing crunch time, which I was really surprised. Did you think we'd be getting this much Christian Wood? I thought that was like a flyer for them. Guarding Kevin Durant on some possessions, wild stuff. But if nothing else, we can trust that when Christian Wood is out there, he will be Christian Wood. In these uncertain times, we can always fall back on that. He certainly had his fair share of like black hole kind of possessions in this game, but he also does play into the Lakers advantages in terms of their length, right? Their size against a team like Phoenix, they're just going to be able to out muscle, get to rebounds, get to balls that they can't get to. So that part of it paid off, I thought in terms of just like having another big out there and certainly the Anthony Davis experiment continues as far as like, do you want more size with him? Do you want to play small with him? There's always that internal question because he seems a little reluctant to do it on a full -time basis, but I'm sure Christian Wood's going to get his shots. I mean, clearly Jackson Hayes is going to get some shots in the rotation to be a meaningful part of the Lakers, the mix there for the Lakers. So I don't know. I think Darvin Ham has a lot of questions to figure out, including the one you listed with Austin Reeves, which is like, who has the ball? Who's initiating for us? Who is involved on a possession to possession basis? Because this game, this was a lot of D 'Angelo Russell, and it was a lot of a better version of D 'Angelo Russell than maybe we saw the other night, but it still feels like a lot. 33 minutes for him tonight. Yeah, Reeves, seven shots, one assist. And I thought all of his usage stuff was going to go up, but it seems like it drifted Russell's way. The other thing I was surprised, I thought Rui was going to be a bigger part of this team. I only played 12 minutes, but I haven't changed my thought on them. They're just such a big, problematic team. And if you're the Suns and you're feeling good after that Warriors game, right? And the Warriors, no Draymond, they were able to overpower them a little on the boards. The two centers had 22. And then tonight you see the flip side of the use of Nurkic experience, where it's like, you're getting zero room protection and you're getting somebody who's just going to be confused anytime somebody is coming off a pick. Basically Lebron at the end of the game just said, I'm going to go attack that guy. Yeah, I'm going to go attack that guy right there. Durant was better tonight, at least for the first three quarters that he looked on Tuesday night. It was really cool just seeing those guys on a basketball court after all these years. As I get older, I'm older than you, but just think like, man, this goes way back now. We're talking mid 2000s was the first time these two guys played basketball against each other and it's still going on. So that was in a cool way kind of lingering over this game. I was enjoying that one. How do you think Durant looks in terms of being a 35 year old guy who they gave up three first rounders and two swaps and Mikhail Bridges and Cam Johnson for? It feels like a slightly loaded question. Yeah. He's looked good. And certainly as you said, the first three quarters of this game looked more than good enough. I think the problem was just like this version of the Suns like felt very James Harden is hurt and Kyrie Irving won't get the shot. Nets, you know, just like Kevin Durant and a bunch of like - I blocked that net out of my mind. I think a lot of us have tried to, but you know, him with a lot of like serviceable workaday role players can get you so far. But as you saw on this one, against a really good defensive team like the Lakers in the fourth quarter, they can just shut the water off. And this is where, you know, I'm nervous about the Suns for a variety of reasons. I think if it was just the defense or just the depth or just the injury risk of their core guys, I would feel better. But it's all of the above all the time. And that's going to put Durant in some games like this one. It's going to put Yusef Nurkic in positions like this one where all of a sudden he's triggering your offense because you don't really have a default point guard out there. And sometimes the value of having a point guard in your rotation, I don't think it's really going to matter when Beal and Booker and Durant are playing together. Those guys can all handle and play make and do everything they need to do. But in a game like this, where two of those guys are out, sometimes it helps to just be able to run some offense that doesn't have to involve Kevin Durant pounding the rock through pick and roll. Yeah, 28 shots for him today. 13 including, and then 13 free throws. He played 39 minutes and was also playing the five in stretches. And this is game two. They had to basically try to unlock 2007 Texas Longhorns Durant. That's the last guy I want to be throwing miles on, maybe in the entire league other than LeBron. Cause he's, you know. That's going to be true for Booker and Beal too, right? Like when any of these guys are out, those three, whoever's left is going to have to play huge minutes or else you get into Grayson Allen and Drew Eubanks are playing like a massive role in your rotation. And I like those guys. I like Drew Eubanks. Maybe not like tamper and lose a second round pick like Drew Eubanks, like some teams do, but. I'd lose 50K for him. Maybe not a second round pick. It's a little steep. Yeah. The other game, Milwaukee Philly. So no Harden. I wish there was a way to just mute the entire Harden story of all coverage for it. Anything online, anything on Twitter, all conversations. I just don't want to hear it anymore. And I don't think he has any interest in playing. And I just think, just tell us when he gets traded. Their best chance now, now that the, especially the Clippers last night looked great.

The Bitboy Crypto Podcast
A highlight from Bitcoins Most EXPLOSIVE Bull Market Ever Is Coming! (Here's Why)
"Last week, on October 16th, we watched Bitcoin jump from just below 28k all the way to $30 ,000 in less than 10 minutes on the release of a fake report by Cointelegraph. That fake report was going to be the BlackRock ETF apparently finally launching. Then late Monday night on October 23rd, we saw prices absolutely destroy resistance and hit $35 ,000. All of this explosive price action has come from an excitement about the incoming Bitcoin ETF. It has gotten a lot of people interested in the prediction of what will be in fact happening when these ETFs are finally approved. Now while no one can give the exact number of when the bull market is going to top, in this video we are going to be diving deeper at the surrounding circumstances as well as how much money could actually flow into Bitcoin's price action to help you better understand just how significant these ETFs are and why this bull market just might be the most explosive one yet. It's time to discover crypto. Now before we get too far, let's make sure we lay the basis of what an actual ETF is. An ETF is a publicly traded investment vehicle that tracks the performance of an underlying asset or index. This is different from a stock because stocks only track the price action of one company. ETFs are a popular way for investors to get exposure to the value of an asset like gold or oil. They usually trade on traditional stock exchanges and their value should rise and fall when the asset increases or decreases in price. Now the first ETF launched all the way back in 1993 and they quickly became a popular way for investors to invest into a basket of assets all at once. More than likely you have heard of this ETF, it's called the S &P 500. When you purchase the S &P 500, instead of buying shares in 500 separate companies, the singular ETF lets you gain exposure to all of them combined all with one purchase. While we have had Bitcoin futures ETFs for a while now, which allow investors to trade future price action of Bitcoin, the news is currently flooded with stories about Bitcoin spot ETFs. A spot ETF is where a centralized entity like BlackRock purchases a large amount of Bitcoin, but then allows other investors to use the stock market to invest in Bitcoin at specific price and also take profit. But the Bitcoin would always belong to BlackRock, not the investor. Effectively, you could invest in the price movement at Bitcoin at any given price immediately without having or ever worrying about actually holding that crypto yourself. If you ever heard of the phrase, not your keys, not your crypto, BlackRock is essentially going to be holding and purchasing all of your crypto for you. Now for those of you who are currently holding Bitcoin and have learned about the advantages of self -custody, you might be asking why wouldn't the masses as well as the institutional investors just buy their own Bitcoin? Well while it seems like that should be simple, it actually can be a little complicated. While I personally would always advocate for self -custody, there are a couple of reasons that somebody would prefer an ETF. One of the biggest reasons is going to be just because of regulation, but they also may just not want to have to deal with the risks that come with and all of the burdens of self -custody ownership of a spot Bitcoin. An ETF would be approved by regulators and managed by a firm that would buy and hold the Bitcoin on their behalf. So they have nothing to worry about at all. In July of 2013, the Winklevoss twins with their Bitcoin trust filed for the first Bitcoin ETF proposal ever in the United States, yes, 10 years ago. It was rejected along with every other subsequent proposal for years. Then came along the ProShares Bitcoin strategy ETF and that became the first Bitcoin futures ETF available in the United States on October 19th of 2021. The purpose Bitcoin ETF used the trading ticker BTCC and made its debut in Toronto in early 2021. According to its issue purpose Investments Inc, this ETF invest directly in physical slash digital Bitcoin. And that's where things stand of as today. As I said before, there is a Bitcoin's futures ETF available on the US market, but not yet a spot Bitcoin ETF. But if the SEC does and has approved a Bitcoin futures ETF that claims to be investing directly into Bitcoin, then why hasn't it approved a spot Bitcoin ETF just yet? Well, that's the question. I think it's shocking that we don't have a better answer to that question. Nobody really knows. There have been a lot of applications, several rounds of frustrating congressional testimony by his ugliness, Darth Gensler, the vague. But none of this has actually ever yielded anything concrete other than a reluctance to allow Bitcoin to further integrate into the existing financial system. Now, Gary Gensler, everybody's favorite human being, got his start at Goldman Sachs. And there has been a lot of speculation that Gary Gensler wants to become the secretary of the Treasury after Janet Yellen. This would allow him to do the bidding of his old buddies on Wall Street. In other words, he's deliberately stalling while trade five bankers scramble up to catch up and bring the market centralized options to compete with Bitcoin. J .P. Morgan, for example, deployed its JPM coin for corporate clients in Europe in June of twenty twenty three and has been rushing the rollout of its onyx coin systems to the market. Now, no one can actually say for sure, but from the outside looking in, it sure seems like something corrupt is going on somewhere. I mean, it's never like JP Morgan's committed market manipulation in the past. Now, the SEC is currently reviewing applications for spot Bitcoin ETFs from the likes of Blackrock, Wisdom Tree, Invesco, Galaxy, Wise Origin, Vanick, Bitwise and Valkyrie digital assets. They recently delayed all of these again, but they are going to have to either finally approve or deny many of them by March of twenty twenty four. Oddly enough, this falls very close on the calendar to the estimated date of the next Bitcoin halving, which is currently projected to take place near the end of April twenty twenty four. And even more interesting, during a panel discussion on ETFs at CC Data's Digital Assets Summit in London, former BlackRock managing director Steven Schoenfeld, and I don't know if I'm butchering that name, who now serves as the CEO of Market Vector Indexes, predicted that the US SEC will approve a spot Bitcoin ETF within three to six months. Another ex BlackRock director, Martin Bednal, now CEO of Jacobi Asset Management, speaking at the same time at the same event, said that he also believes the SEC will approve all of these Bitcoin ETFs together. Now, this is to avoid any signs of market manipulation and make sure that BlackRock's not looked at as the favorite from the SEC. But if the approval of all these spot ETFs syncs up with a 50 percent reduction in a new issuance of Bitcoin, that could provide the basis of a very powerful bull run, a huge drop in supply, combined with a vast amount of new capital entering the Bitcoin market and generating demand. But how much demand? How much are we really talking about? And how much would the price actually move? Well, the combined market caps of these firms is around seventeen point eight trillion dollars. Yes, that's a lot of capital. The assets under management and all of this is hard to capture exactly because companies like Vanguard, State Street and BlackRock all have leaders who sit on each other's boards and they all effectively own each other in some way or another. Now, this makes it pretty hard to precisely estimate. However, going back to Stephen Schoenfeld, who may have mentioned before, says that his into Bitcoin, specifically into investment products over the next three years. Now, Bernstein estimates that the crypto fund management industry will grow to over five hundred billion dollars of assets in the next five years. And then there are lasered eyed maxis like Michael Saylor who think that Bitcoin is just going to go to infinity. So what's realistic to expect in terms of inflows and how much would that move the price of Bitcoin? Well, again, this is tough to say. But in March of twenty twenty one, Bank of America published a research note with some interesting observations on the subject. They claim that, quote, Bitcoin is extremely sensitive to increased dollar demand. They claim that it would take at least two billion dollars worth of inflows to move the price of gold by one percent and over two point two five billion to move 20 year plus treasury bonds by one percent. Thank God we print money. But Bitcoin was much easier. The analyst said, we estimate a net influence of Bitcoin of just ninety three million dollars would result in a price appreciation of one percent. He also added, looking at detailed block chain records, we find that the largest addresses have not been selling in aggregate since the beginning of the pandemic. That was back in twenty twenty one. And since then, whales have continued accumulating and supply held by long term Bitcoin holders has hit an all time high. So the supply of Bitcoin is still decreasing and Bitcoin is still very sensitive to increased spot demand. So let's have some fun and do a little bit of moon math. If we're looking at investment firms with a combined total of seventeen point seven trillion dollars of assets, let's say that they move just about one percent of that money into spot Bitcoin. That would be about one hundred and seventy seven billion dollars worth of new capital inflows into spot Bitcoin using Bank of America's estimate of about 90 million dollars to move Bitcoin up one percent in price. That would mean that in one year, the price of Bitcoin would rise a little bit over nineteen hundred percent. Now, at today's price levels of about thirty four thousand dollars per Bitcoin, a one thousand nine hundred percent increase over one year would put Bitcoin comfortably over the six hundred and forty thousand dollar price level. That to me seems wildly bullish and way too high. And I want to emphasize that there's a lot of estimation and assumption going into that calculation. But there is no guarantee that these spot Bitcoin purchases are going to be market orders and directly impact that price. And there's no way to know how much selling might be done once these numbers start to run up. Still, though, there's no denying that the mass approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs, combined with a new Bitcoin halving, would bring about a huge increase in demand alongside a huge reduction of supply, very similar to what we saw in 2004 November when Gold launched their ETF in the November of that year. That's just what I think. Let me know down in the comments how you think all of this is going to play out. Will the SEC approve a spot Bitcoin ETF or continue to keep them shut out of the market? And how much money do you think institutions are going to be bringing into Bitcoin once the ETF actually gets approved? Or do you think secretly they're already accumulating? That's all I got for this one. Make sure to smash that like button and subscribe to the channel to keep yourself educated on all things crypto. That being said, I'll see you all at the top.

You get context and context changes everything. Go to Bloomberg .com to get context to TV subscriptions because of Monday Night Football, not Monday Night Football, Sunday Ticket, right? That sounds like you have a business of sports podcast, Scarlett. Sounds like you have a business of sports podcast. Yeah. Well, we pay attention to it all. Let's walk through the numbers real quickly here as we await some of those earnings across the wire. The Dow Jones Industrial Average in the green on the day, up by about two hundred points or six tenths of a percent as we wait for these numbers to settle down just a bit. But the S &P 500 is going to finish higher by about 30 points or seven tenths of a percent, while the Nasdaq composite higher by about one hundred twenty one points or nine tenths of a percent, while the Russell 2000 closing out the day with a gain of about eight tenths of a percent. All right. We await those earnings. Quick check on the S &P 500. Three hundred forty six names. Scarlett higher in today's session. One hundred fifty five to the downside to unchanged. Yeah. And looking at the sector breakdown overwhelmingly to the upside, telecom utilities and autos leading the way. Telecom, of course, getting a big, huge lift from Verizon that grew up almost six percent on the downside. Energy tracking lower with oil prices, transportation and commercial and professional services all down. All right. So let's get to it. I mentioned Chinese names, definitely not performer in today's session. And we do have Microsoft. I'm thinking we should go right there. Yeah, let's go right to Microsoft. Those earnings crossing the wire right now, the headline number coming in here with revenue for that fiscal first quarter. Fifty six point five billion dollars. A slight beat over street estimates of fifty four point five. EPS for the quarter coming in at two dollars and ninety nine cents. Not quite sure of the comparison there, but let's go through a couple of the segments here. Personal computing revenue coming in at thirteen point six seven billion. That's a beat. The intelligent cloud revenue business coming in at twenty four point two six billion. That's also a beat. And the.

Check out the first episode. It's not that long. It's really well done. And you will definitely 100 % enjoy it. Okay. Let's bring in the cuz. Let's talk some football. Let's talk some wound licking with some bets, some Eagles, all kinds of things. It's all next. First, our friends from Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam! All right. We are taping this. It is 830 Pacific time on Sunday night. Cousin Sal is here as always. He's wearing a nice, fresh Oregon hat that I think you probably bought probably this weekend. You went to visit your son? Smells very new. Yeah, I went to visit my son. I'm not happy with the way my hair looks. And I think the hat's an improvement. So what am I going to do? It looks great. We just watched Dolphins Eagles just now. And at the same time, Rangers Astros was happening. And it really felt like, I don't know, it felt like a great October sports night there. And then Texas blew it open in the end. But next week, we'll have basketball. There will be baseball going on. It'll really feel like October. The Eagles though. So right as I start sending texts to Eagles people in my life wondering what's going on with Hurts and what's going on with this team, and then they just turn it on and they win by 14. It's weird. Eye test wise versus the stats and just looking at the standings and stuff. It's a team that doesn't seem like they have all their shit together. And yet it doesn't matter because they have so much talent. They can just kind of pick and choose. And then all of a sudden they win anyway. I know don't what other team in the NFL is like this. Do you see that too? Yeah, absolutely. And it's a bummer because I think you agree. The Dolphins are, I don't know, favorite team to watch if you have to cut everything else out. Best offense, so much going on, like dynamic, Tyreek Hill, anything. Tua. But when they play a game like this, when they go to Buffalo, they're just going to get beat in the trenches. And like what you said is it doesn't really matter if you're so physical, Philadelphia, offensively or defensively. And like Tua's getting swallowed up in the pocket on third and ones. And where Philadelphia could just run that tush push like it or not, it's going to move the chains every time. So, yeah, it sucks. Yeah. The less flashy team wins. And they happen to be in my favorite team's division. But that's what's going to happen in January. Ten turnovers for Hertz. He had eight off last year. There's times where, you know, like sometimes, and I don't know whether he's protecting his body or what's going on, but he'll kind of duck away from taking hits, which is smart. And then he'll have weird throws. And I texted Solak today during third quarter. I'm like, are we going to find out that Hertz has had like torn rib cartilage since week two or, you know, he doesn't look right sometimes. And then in the fourth quarter, all of a sudden looks great. And I don't really know what to make of it. And I can't get a feel for it. But on top of it, they have this tush push thing that in the big drive of the game, they're able to get two straight fourth and ones on their own side of the field. I know we, you and I have talked about it. You've talked about it incessantly. And at the same time, it feels like it is the most important NFL invention in the last five years, this play that nobody can stop ever at any point. If he does, nobody else can do it. I know it's weird. And we likened it to the Tom Brady thing. There was no reason why Tom Brady should convert fourth and one and a half every single time, you know, physically and everything else. But except they had their shit together, the Eagles, they really do. And if he does have cracked ribs, I hope it's from his own teammate, smashing them over the line of scrimmage there. Yeah, it was just wear and tear on the back of his body from several guys. Yeah. So they're performing the Heimlich on him like every eight minutes. So I guess if you're taking the takeaway from the Eagles is nice when they needed to have it, they're also supposed to win. But the AJ Brown piece of it, the fact that they traded, you know, a first round pick basically, and then they paid him. And I don't know, he's one of the four best receivers in the league now. Is he one of the three? He's somewhere on the shortest possible list. I have him on multiple fantasy teams, and it's gotten to the point where I'm just expecting 100 yards in a TD every game. But that turned out to be one of the better trades, I think, of the last 10 years. Just kind of took him from Tennessee. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that was ridiculous. And he is such a great possession receiver. And it's like, it's scary, too, because you'll forget about him, too. You probably put Justin Jefferson in the top three. And then every time Cousins drops back the pass or any snap, you're like, all right, this has to go to Jefferson. Otherwise, it's going to go for nothing out of this offense. And then eight tush pushes in a row. And then you see AJ Brown's like, oh, my God, I forgot about this guy. What? He's got 120 yards. It's nuts. So, yeah, dynamite. I like, yeah, there's like four different kind of catches he can make, too, which I think makes him stand out because they can throw those bubble screens. They can just put them right over the middle, like for seven, eight yards. It seems like whenever they want, they can send him deep down the sidelines, which he seems to love. And then that kind of deep over the middle with two guys on him and he can make plays anyway. But he he has, like, I think the biggest bag of any of the receivers right now. Yeah, personal. I don't know. I got these guys. Yeah. Yeah. I hate this team. I don't know. I don't even know what to say anymore. Like, you know, the Miami have what, 10 or 11 penalties? It's just like it's a it's like a mind fuck, too, when you play him, too, because you can't get out of a can't get out of your own way when you play against them. Kyle, don't turn on the tick tock camera for this. Has Philly replaced Boston for most interesting sports city? Like, look at all the shit they have going right now. Right. Right. They're they're about to make the World Series. They have this Eagles team that made the Super Bowl last year and it feels super relevant again, is definitely going to be a final 14 worst case scenario. And then they have this NBA team with this James Harden saga that God only knows how he's going to sabotage things over the next month. But and then you look at my team where my city where I have the the you know, we have a great NBA team, it looks like. And then other than that, completely forgettable across the board. I think Philly's kind of grabbed the mantle a little bit. I don't like it. I don't like it right now. That's not good. And it's not good for their fans because their fans are supposed to just hate the other team, not supposed to like their team. So it doesn't matter if their team is good. Right. Yeah, I don't know. It's a bummer. Although I'll say that they were in this position last year, too. Right. Phillies win the World Series. The Eagles win the Super Bowl. This has been this is the 2020s has kind of been the Philly decade. I don't like it. It's upsetting to me. And fortunately, the Sixers are it seems like they're going to go in the tank. But I got to say they have great crowds like the the Phillies playoff crowds are way up there. That's about as good of a baseball crowd as you're going to get. It really feels like if they can have like a do or die game or a must win game or a clincher at home, you feel like they're going to get it. And whatever happened with Bryce, you know, pretty special, like to sign that guy from another team and he becomes the signature athlete in your city. We had a little bit of that with Manny Ramirez, where we kind of took him from. We paid for it, but took him from Cleveland and he kind of became one of the symbols of that run. But pretty nuts that they just took him from another team and he became what he became. Yeah, it's a great crowd whenever they I mean, I thought the Rams crowd today was dynamite, too, against the Steelers. I thought they really showed up. It's really loud. Yeah, yeah, it's been proud to be from L .A. Yeah, I have a I know you don't want to talk about Phillies, so I'll move on. I have a Tyree question for you. What's your all time receiver list for receivers you've watched just where you're like, that guy's fucking amazing? Because for me, it was always Rice number one and Moss two and then a drop off. And then some people like Tio's three for me. I'm like, cool. Tio is like an absolute franchise murderer and was a huge head case and you couldn't trust him. And as the years pass, the stats will be great. All the fucking drama that he brought to every situation he's in, that stuff will kind of die off. But for me, I think Tyreek's unequivocally three now for me. Every single game, it just you just feel like he's going to have 250 yards as you're watching it, right? Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Unstoppable, Tyreek over Calvin Johnson, that type. Yeah, I think like where you would put him. Yeah, I think for me, he's definitely over Calvin Johnson. Michael Gallup is three, four. I'm trying to see where I would put these people. Yeah, I think you're right. I think you're right. I think he's got to be number three. Although if you look at like Antonio Brown, who's now a punch line, he had like six of the best seasons you'll ever see in a row. But but in terms of presence and being unstoppable, Rice, Moss, Tyreek Hill, it's a good three. That's how I feel. I think, you know, Sharp, I think, could have gotten there in the Packers way back when in the 90s. And then, you know, he hurt his neck and he basically only had like a six or seven year career. But I thought in the 90s, I thought other than Rice, he was the second best guy. Your guy, Irvin, was great. There's no question that team was loaded. We've had some good ones over the years, but Tyreek, the speed, how he just tilts the field over and over again, how scared the other team is of him. How much space he opens up for everybody else. I think he's three. I don't think he'll ever get over Moss or Rice for me, though. I'm trying to think who could pass him, though, now at three. I mean, we've put Justin Jefferson up there before. Now that we haven't seen him for a few weeks, we've kind of forgot about him in the right now. But Hill's done this now for, you know, six, what's it, six years since he's on the 18 Chiefs. I can't remember how many years he's been in the league, but yeah, he'll be stride for stride with two defenders. And then, like, if the ball hangs up there long enough, he's now seven, eight yards past them. Oh, I know who's number four. That's a nice little advantage. Pooka. He is? Guys, see that catch he made on the sideline today? It was pretty great. Before the Rams realized they were going against a force greater than any satanic force or anything, the Pittsburgh Steelers. You want to talk about that? Yeah, let's do it. Let's do it. So they're four and two. I've watched every play of all six games. I have no idea how they're four and two, but they've hit the point now where I feel like they're going to win when there's no signs. Like that guy missed the extra point today for the Rams and made it nine, three instead of 10, three. I'm like, oh, here we go. Steelers come down. All of a sudden it's 10, nine. They have five first downs because they get the TJ Watt, you know, the pick that sets up the touchdown. And you're just like, here we go. They're doing this. And we've seen this before because this was the Eli Manning. Danny Heifetz was the first person to point this out. This was the Eli Manning recipe for years and years that I can't believe that team's winning. What the fuck just happened? He only made two throws. How did he do it? They're four and two. I totally believe in them. And I feel like they're going to go 12 and five and have a negative point differential. Well, the good thing is we're making money off them, right? We've been and we saw them. Plus, I mean, I thought they'd be favored last Sunday night. I thought they'd be favored, but they're not. So we're doing that thing, but also just taking them because the Steelers. But I found the gem and I gave it out on ringer wise guys, Rams first half Steelers to win the game 10 to one. You know, I'm positive that their bullshit is going to pay dividends and 10 to one. I think it'll hit like three more times. Like you're right. That TJ Watt interception brings it down to the eight. We see some separation from Pickens on a receipt, like the little one drive you wait for all game and it happens. And then that terrible spot at the end, it didn't give him a chance. That that was beyond really big. McVeigh also probably should have had a timeout left. I know. But, you know, what is it important to be like, hey, listen, we could get this right, but we'd rather teach you a lesson, coach, to save your timeouts. Like, I don't, this, the spot thing bothers me more than missed pass interferences because it's an old man jogging eight yards and he has to see between 20 bodies. And then like, you know, he sticks his foot in the mud and says, here, this is like a surveyor from 1835. He's like, this is where your property in, sir. Like we got to put, there's a chip in the ball. Isn't there a chip in the ball? What's it for? It's funny that we figured out Wimbledon. We figured out we've in U .S. Open, we figured out how to measure serves immediately, whether they hit the line or not in football, which seems like it would be really easy to just have some sort of magnet that was attached to the chains. The other thing that was weird about that for the people who didn't see it, the Steelers did fourth and one, they had the lead. There's probably like a little more than two minutes left and they run the QB sneak play, kind of the Brady play where you, you kind of put your head down, but you go left. But he slipped and fell on his knee and his knee went down. And it wasn't one of those when you're watching it where you're like, oh, I wonder if he got it was like, you knew immediately, oh, he didn't get it. He slipped. And then they come in with the spot and then like, oh, he might have gotten it. And they did that. I couldn't believe it. And I'm rooting for the Steelers. But I was like, oh, my God, it's the worst spot of the year. I thought they deserved to win anyway. But but that was pretty tough for the Rams. We need some clarification. And I get it because McVeigh didn't have timeouts and it wasn't actually the two minute warning yet, even though it did wind to that after that. But is there a ref in the sky? Is there this guy in the sky or is this everything has to go back to New York? Like, I feel like we're told three different things. It's a bummer because that could have been overturned. But you're right. Ten to one we hit. Let's just keep doing it. You know, you know who else would have gotten that fourth one? Eli Manning. He would have fallen down a half foot in front and somehow would have gotten the spot. The Rams kicker was the MVP of this game for the Steelers. He missed two longer field goals. They were like 50 yard field goals, but he missed about them. Then he missed that extra point. And then Tomlin just, you know, he threw away the challenge. He screwed up a challenge, which is the Tomlin staple.

SI Media Podcast
A highlight from Joe Buck and Troy Aikman
"I'm Mo Rocca and I'm excited to announce season four of my podcast Mobituaries. I've got a whole new bunch of stories to share with you about the most fascinating people and things who are no longer with us. From famous figures who died on the very same day to the things I wish would die, like buffets. Listen to Mobituaries with Mo Rocca on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome everyone to SI Media with Jimmy Trainor. Thank you so much for listening. We have an awesome episode this week. We have Joe Bock and Troy Aikman together followed by our weekly train of thought segment with his alakada, Joe and Troy entering year number, well not entering, they're in year number 22 together and they will top John Madden and Pat Sumrall for the longest broadcast crew in the NFL with 22 years together. So we discussed that and a variety of other topics. Talked to Joe about if he'll ever call baseball again. Got Troy's opinions on the tush push, what's going on with Bill Belichick, some broadcasting stuff, Tom Brady. So excellent, excellent stuff from Joe and Troy from ESPN. Monday Night Football. And then in train of thoughts, we read some mailbag questions. We're going to start doing that every week on the podcast. So check that out. Before we get to it, just a quick reminder, if you missed any recent episodes, go into the archives and check them out. We had Brian Curtis from The Ringer on last week, Andrew Marchand and the New York Post two weeks ago, Kevin Clark from ESPN three weeks ago. So if you missed any of those, check them out. Give them a listen, subscribe to SI Media with Jimmy Trainor and rate and review on Apple. All right, let's get to it. Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, followed by train of thoughts all right here, right now on SI Media with Jimmy Trainor. All right. Very excited. I've had them both separately many times on the podcast, but I have them together. The broadcast crew, the best broadcast crew in the NFL from ESPN, Monday Night Football. Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Joe, Troy, how are you guys doing? Good. We're good. I have a question already. You said the best broadcast crew in the NFL from ESPN's Monday Night Football. Was that the best broadcast crew in the NFL? And they're also from ESPN's Monday Night Football? Or is it just of all the people that ESPN has doing the NFL, we're the best group? Well, since you brought that up, then I'll just tell everyone that two weeks ago, I believe it was during the giant Seahawk game, I that tweeted Troy is so far and away the best analyst in the sport right now that the gap between him and number two is really wide. And Dan Arlovski actually replied to me on Twitter and was like, hey, you know, like what about me? So I did mean across the entire NFL. Anybody want to respond to that? Troy's just laughing away over there. Yeah. No, thank you for the compliment. It means a lot. It does. It does mean a lot. You know, it's kind of a funny thing. You know, you don't get most of the feedback you get is negative and it's people on Twitter and it's people that are ripping you and saying you're a moron. And, you know, to have somebody who watches this stuff and pays attention saying that is nothing that I take lightly. I think it's great. Thank you very much. Well, I appreciate that. We're going to get into all this stuff and it's your 22nd year together. And I want to talk about that. But I do listen and watch very carefully. So I heard something this past Monday night that I'd like to sort of maybe facilitate here on the pod where Joe you because I am a degenerate gambler. So anytime there's a bet involved my ears perk up. Joe, you offered Troy a hundred bucks if Troy could name four players on the Texas Rangers. I thought this would be the perfect time to see if Troy can do that and then you can pay him when you see him on Monday. Let's see. Pudge Rodriguez, Nolan Ryan, Alex Rodriguez. So no hundred bucks for Troy. No hundred bucks. I was the easiest bet I've ever made in my life. There you go. I love that moment, though. And I think that moment because Steve Ackles, our producer, who's phenomenal, clip that somebody had that on Twitter and sent that to us the next day kind of like, okay, love this for you two guys. And it is I think it does kind of speak to our relationship and it speaks to our friendship and it speaks to the fact that he came back with, you know, there was a time in October I didn't have to work with you. I was so happy that like I was I love that, that he came back at me. So it's that stuff is really fun and I think hopefully separates us. It was definitely a fun moment. You want to offer Troy 50 bucks if he can name one Texas Ranger? Yeah. No, I'm not doing that to him. I like him too much. I'm not going to do that to him. I mean, they advance. You got to now you got to learn one player on the team. Nate Evaldi. There you go. Like I said, you guys now, 22 years together, Madden and Summerall did 21. I know, I know, Troy, you are a huge, huge Madden guy. Yeah. Talk to me about it. Yeah. I know Madden sort of took you under his wing a little bit, right? A little bit, but it didn't, the friendship didn't initially start that way. You know, first of all, I was really fortunate in my career that when we got good, which happened relatively quickly, all things considered, Madden and Summerall, they were, they narrated my, the highlight reels of my career. So, you know, I'm, I'm really happy about that, but, but because of that, because they covered so many of our games, I became very close friends with them on a personal level. Pat lived just outside of Dallas. I spent time, you know, at holiday parties with him. I did a TV show with him while I was playing for two seasons, a weekly show. And then Madden got to know him, spent 4th of July's with him up in Northern California. And played golf with him. And so then when I retired and decided to go into broadcasting, I, yeah, I picked his brain a lot. And that first year we were together at Fox. And then one year later I was actually in Santa Barbara and he called me. That's how I got the news that he was leaving Fox and going to Monday night football that he called me and gave me the news and had little idea what that might mean to me. But that's when Joe and I and Chris Collinsworth got paired and moved up. But yeah, John was, he was a special friend as Pat was as well. And the fact that we're even mentioned in the same sentence with them because of our longevity, it means a lot. It's something that I'm really proud of. The worst thing you or any analyst could do is go into a broadcasting career and try to copy or imitate John Madden or be John Madden. So given that, what did you try to take from him though, when you started to do games? Well, the questions I had was just that there's a lot going on in the booth. And when you get into the booth as a player, straight from the field, it takes some time to figure out exactly what you're supposed to be looking at. Where, you know, I asked him those kinds of questions, like what do you focus on pre -snap? What are you looking at at the snap? And what I found is that, you know, he views it differently. One, because he was a coach, but also because he was a linebacker. So, you know, he views it more along the line of scrimmage. That's what he got into a lot of. Matt Millen, the same way. And then when I came into it, I was a unique analyst compared to what Fox had had at that time. And so I talked more bigger picture. I talked more from a quarterback perspective. And there was a resistance initially to where they said, hey, we need more offensive line play. And I said, well, if you need more offensive line play, then you got the wrong guy, because that's not what I do. And so everybody comes at it a little bit differently. But what John's advice was to me was, you know, hey, where your strength is right now is you're fresh off the field. You know what's happening. You know the players. Whereas his strength was that he knew television, and he had been broadcasting for a long time. So that then is what he leaned on more. And I agree. I don't try to be anybody. I mean, I do listen to all analysts. I know what I think is good and why it might be good. And with that, then you try to say, OK, yeah, maybe I should attack this in this way. But at the end of the day, I'm who I am. My personality is what it is. And I don't try to be John. And quite honestly, I think early on, there were a lot of analysts trying to be John Madden. And I understand it to a point, if he's the best, then everybody's kind of wanting to be that. But think I analysts now have been given a little bit more runway to be who they are. And I think that those analysts who have been able to do that, I think they've been better served. Joe, obviously, Troy was the player, now the broadcaster. You've been a broadcaster your whole life. So I would assume the 22 years together with Troy passing Madden in some role, longest tenured NFL broadcast crew, has special meaning to you, being in this business, with your dad being in this business, et cetera. Yeah. And I have personal ties to both guys. My dad was a broadcast partner to both. My dad did radio football with Pat. They were both at CBS for a long time. My dad was one of Madden's first TV partners. And I know John really liked my dad and obviously vice versa. So I always had that connection to John and to Pat when I would show up at the Fox Seminar. And I was down the list of play -by -play guys. So I do appreciate that fact. I am proud of the body of work that he and I have put together. You have to throw the first three years in there with Chris, too. And I think we're better now than we've ever been, which I think is the best part of it all. I honestly believe that. I think Troy's better than he's ever been. I think I'm more dialed in than I've ever been. Maybe that's without baseball and not kind of running on fumes during this particular month on the calendar. But to think, at least in my opinion, we're still growing and still getting better. And that, to me, is more exciting than milestones. When I was the youngest this and the youngest that, I just had to go do it. I didn't really get caught up in all that stuff. And at the end of the day, nobody really cares other than my family. So, you know, I'm proud of everything I've done with the other guy on this podcast. And I'm really proud of everything I've done with you, Jimmy, over the years. I feel like we've done some good work, too. We have. But that doesn't mean I'm not going to grill you later on some things. No, that's fine. I hope so. We've got some things to discuss. Just on your 22 years before we switched gears, did either of you have, it could be different, a moment, a game, a season where you felt like, we're really good, we're in a groove, this is working, this is kind of special? Like, when did you first feel that? I think right out of the gate, I knew it was pretty interesting. I think it was very different, obviously, with another person in there, being Chris, and Chris and Troy being very different people. And very different broadcasters. By the way, I think that's really the only time it kind of works, when the two analysts in a three -man booth are different. And that was certainly the case with Chris and Troy. But I never felt like we weren't in a good rhythm. I never felt like we were a bad listen. I do feel like once you get through your first Super Bowl and you come back around and you're lined up for the next year, and now Chris had moved on, and it was Troy and me, it didn't take long, that fourth year total, for us to get into an even better rhythm, because it was almost like the weight was off. The weights, the handicap was off. And that has nothing to do with Chris. It could have been anybody. But I think three -man booths are very hard. And when it was just the two of us, it became very easy to get into a rhythm together. And he knew when I stopped talking, it was his turn. I knew when he stopped talking, at some point it was my turn, as opposed to having another person in there. So I think I would say year four is when it felt like, okay, this is really good, I enjoy this, and hopefully it lasts for a while. Troy, you got anything on that? Yeah, no, I would basically agree. I don't think there was this moment when, hey, this is really good, or hey, this works. I know that I had been in a three -man booth my first year with Moose, and then three years following that with Chris. I mean, I knew four games into my career with Moose that three -man booth was tough, and it wasn't something that I really wanted to continue to do. So I was excited when it became a two -man booth. And you just control the broadcast a little bit more, and you're not scatter -shooting after every play and chasing a lot of different things. So that part of it was good. And I would just add this, Jimmy, and Joe and I have talked about it, and we've talked about it on other podcasts and with other writers, that when you get to 22 years, there's a lot of things that have gone well for you. I mean, there's other pairings that could have lasted that long as well, but it was not because of anything they could control. And there was changes made, or this network lost football, or whatever it might be, you know, or this guy wanted to retire. Joe and I came in, you know, we're roughly the same age. I'm a little bit older. But when I left for ESPN, there was no certainty that Joe was going to be able to get out of his contract, so there was a lot going on there. And I think that had Joe not wanted to come to ESPN or if I had not wanted Joe to work with Joe any longer, we both had equal opportunities to kind of take a stand and say, hey, this has been great for, you know, 20 years, but, you know, it's time to kind of move on. We could have very easily have done that. And I think the fact that we're still working together, it's one thing to say, hey, you really respect the guy and you're really close friends, but I think that both of us going to ESPN and continuing to work, you know, you really put an exclamation mark at the end of that. And it meant a lot to me. I mean, I can't even begin to tell you how much it's meant to me that Joe wanted to come and continue to work with me. And I think it's fair to say that it meant as much to him that I wanted to continue to work with him. And so if anything else, going to ESPN has only made our relationship that much stronger. The parallel is interesting because here you are passing Madden and Summerall, and Madden and Summerall, and you guys are the rare teams that stayed together at different networks. They were obviously at CBS for a million years. CBS loses the NFL. They went together to Fox. I'm sure, you know, NBC at the time who had the rights trying to get them or Monday Night Football, but they stayed together. And then here you guys are, Troy goes to ESPN. Joe wasn't there yet. It was Troy leaving first. And then you guys end up together. It's an interesting parallel to Madden and Summerall that you remain together. I mean, John ended up having other partners afterwards, but, you know, we work with Al Michaels, but it's an interesting - I'm pretty sure John ended up at every network. Yeah, he did, I think. You know, when it was all said and done. And yeah, I'm just as proud of that. And I do like that parallel that Pat and John stayed together and he and I stayed together. And it's just, this business is too weird and it's too tough at times who not knowing is standing next to you and what they're all about and what their motives are and if they've got your back. And, you know, to have that and to have the - forget the mechanics of the broadcast and the rhythm and all that stuff. We've got that down. That's baked in. But knowing, like, even that moment that we've already talked about where I know I can throw something at him. If I was working this year with Greg Olsen and I said that, I don't know if that's gonna piss him off. I don't know if he's gonna be like, hey, why are you trying to - But Troy one -upped me by ripping me saying there was a time when I didn't have to work with you in October. That's what I'm talking about. Like, I can give him trouble. He can give it back and be better at it than me. And that is like a great moment for us. It has nothing to do with me. Like, I genuinely root for Troy to be great. And I know he does for me. And that is what it's all about. And I would imagine with Madden and Summerall not having asked him this specifically, but they fit together so well because Jon was so big and such a big presence and a personality and a wham and, you know, kind of snot hanging off the face mask and all the other stuff. And Pat was the straight man. And we're not that, but we fit together on the air in a way that I think is genuinely pleasing to ears people's and sensibilities when they're listening to the game if they bother to listen to it that closely.

The Tennis.com Podcast
A highlight from Roger Smith's Journey From The Bahamas to Pro Tennis: Beating the World #1 and Teaching The Next Generations
"Welcome to the official tennis dot com podcast featuring professional coach and community leader, Kamau Murray. Welcome to the tennis dot com podcast. I'm your host, Kamau Murray, and we are here with the man, the myth, the legend. A graduate of The Ohio State University, former ATP pro, a coach to many, a mentor to many, father of great tennis player, former USTA coach, worked for Federation, from the Bahamas, former Davis Cup player. If you name it in Tennessee, he's done it all, knows everyone. Everyone has great stories about him, and we're going to hear some of his great stories today. We are here with Mr. Roger Smith. Roger, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me, Kamau. I really appreciate this opportunity to speak here, man. So I'm glad I got you on the show because, you know, when we think about Bahamian tennis, the first person out of everybody's mouth is Mark Knowles. And then I got to correct him and be like, hey, what about Roger? What about the brother Roger? So, you know, you grew up playing tennis from in a small island, but, I mean, that island's had a lot of success reaching the same world group as the US back in the day. Tell me about how you got in the tennis from that small island and how you were able to sort of progress to come into play at the top level NCAA, you know, top college in the States from the Bahamas. Well, if you have all day, I can tell you that story. I'll do bits and pieces as we go. Yeah, I'm from a small island, obviously Grand Bahama in the Bahamas, but I'm actually from a very small settlement called West End. The population was probably three thousand. And in that settlement, you know, obviously, tourism is the main industry. And we had one resort down there called the Jack Tower Hotel. And remember, I'm old now, you know, I came from the days where, you know, the bosses and the powers to be were obviously, you know, we were a British colony. So obviously the white British guys were in charge. And coming from an island where there was mostly, you know, black people, we could only go so far, you know, working at that resort. You know, we could be maitre d's, you could be pool attendants. Most of us couldn't even show our face at the front desk, per se. So growing up in that environment, I kind of knew from a young age, I'm saying six years old that, hey, there's something bigger and better for me out there. You know, because all my friends growing up, all they wanted to do is be bus boys and maitre d's where they can get $40 tips and so forth. And I was like, nah, man, there's got to be something bigger than that. And so I despised that. I remember back in the day where the bosses, white guys would, you know, word would go around that they were coming into the village, per se, to eat and dine and drink a few. And everybody in the village would pretty much cook their best food. You had to dress up in your Sunday best. And if there were like three, 30 restaurants, per se, maybe they would go to visit two or three, right, during the course of the evening. And everyone would be so disappointed. All the restaurant owners or the bars would be so disappointed. I mean, the look on their face, man, was just terrible, you know, in disappointment. And I just despised that, man. And that motivated me. I found my purpose at a young age. I was not going to get caught up in that stuff. I knew there was something bigger and better out there for me. I didn't know what it was at the time. I was six years old. But, you know, I took a bold step to just strive for something better. And even if I so -called failed to end people's eyes, it didn't matter. My purpose was so deep that it just didn't matter, man. I was going for it. I didn't know it was tennis. But we eventually moved to Freeport, where my mother, we moved to this condominium, and they had tennis courts and they had a tennis wall. And it was so bad. Come on, man. None of the kids would play with me, man. And mostly white kids, you know, expats. One of them would play with me. And there happened to be one kid I went to school with that taught me how to score, taught me the rules of the game. And, man, I just became a fanatic. I fell in love with the sport. And I played a lot of other sports, you know, basketball, baseball, you name it, track and field. But I just fell in love with tennis, man. And I just played on this wall all day, all night. I wouldn't even get in trouble with my mom, man. I'd come in after dark and I'd lose a million balls. I'd be climbing fence to find balls, man. But I got good. And three months later, I played my first tournament. And back in the day, junior tournament was just 18 and under. No age group. No age group. Right. Yeah. And I got to the quarterfinals, you know, just on fight. My strokes were terrible. I could run. I hate to lose. Like I said, I had a purpose, man. Now, were you self -taught at that point? Did you receive any form or training? Or was it just you and the wall? Just me and the wall. Self -taught. And everybody that would hit with me, man, I wanted to go all day. They would hit for 10 minutes and quit. I was just getting so pissed, man. I wanted to just hit all day. I'd line them up, man, hit with three people. And after like an hour, they quit. I had no one else to hit with, man. So I would just go on the wall. Right. And I, you know, I just learned. I just didn't want to miss. I just got consistent. And I got to the quarterfinals, like I said, beat a couple of good guys. And then I lost in the quarters to this kid who was 18. And he had a beard, man. Big and strong. Good strokes. Lost six points a third in a three and a half hour match. And then all the kids wanted to play with me. And then some men saw me play and they invited me to their club. And they were like, look, it was hotel, really, not the club. And come play with the men. So I started to play with the men and they would beat my butt, man. I'd be crying because I want to win so bad. They would tease me. But I forgot the kids, man. You know, I didn't play with them. I just learned how to compete, you know, just learn how to compete through everything. And a year later, man, I played my first 12 and under national tournament, which was in Nassau now, where Mark Knowles is from. And I won the 12 and unders. And that was like within six to eight months after I first started playing tennis. So that's how I got started, man. That's how I got started. But I was like a court rat, man. Anyone would tell you, man, if you want to define Roger Smith, he was at the court at this one hotel called the Princess Tower. And going further, you know, the Princess Tower was where they had the superstars. I don't know if you remember the superstars back. That might be before your time. That's before my time. Yeah, but you heard of it, right? That's when they had all the superstars of every sport come in and compete against each other in different sports. To see who was the best. And this guy saw me play, and he loved the way I played, man. He saw me hitting other courts and he said, hey, who's your coach? And I said, man, I don't really have a coach. And he said, I'm going to come back in two weeks, man. I'm going to get you some coaching. And I go, okay, man, you're going to come back in two weeks. I'll be ready. So an hour later he came back and he shook my hand. And he says, look, man, you ready to go? I mean, I mean, this is how serious I am. And he gave me a hundred dollar bill. And a hundred dollars back then is a lot of money. And it was a big guy, man. You know, and he just had this certain look about it, man. And a strong male figure, you know, but I didn't know who he was. Gave me a hundred dollars. Show enough, Kamal. Two weeks later, he came back and he said, you're going to be ready to go on Sunday. This is like Thursday. And I'm like, damn, he's serious. I'm like, yeah, I'm going to be ready to go. And he says, but I got to meet your parents. So I go, I get you. You're not going to meet my dad. Because remember, my dad passed away when I was 11 months old. So I never really knew my dad. So it was all my mom, you know. And so I told her, look, we got to go to dinner to meet this guy. He's going to take me to Florida to get this coaching. She's like, man, get the hell out of here, man. You crazy. I was like, no, man, no. And she's like, I ain't going. I was like, no, you're not going to kill my dream. You got to go. So she came. We went, we met him at the hotel. She saw him. I said, there's the guy right there. She says, do you know who that is? And I go, no, I don't know who that is. She said, that's Jimmy the Greek. And I'm like, Jimmy the Greek? I don't know who that is. And she said, man, that's Jimmy the Greek. So anyway, we went. You know, Jimmy the Greek, man. You know, he was the big Vegas odds man there with sports and stuff. You know, he did Monday Night Football. He was huge. And so anyway, long story short, she gave me $200 to go with him on Sunday. We get to the ticket counter and I said, hey, Mr. Snyder, because his name is Jimmy the Greek Snyder. Here's my $200 for the ticket. He said, man, keep that money in your pocket, man. So we get on the flight, man. We go to Miami and we get there and we're met by like a group of like seven, eight people. And you could tell they were someone, you know, and a limousine. And we go to the limousine and I'm really nervous because I'm like, our bags, man. I need our bags. And he's like, oh, don't worry about the bags. I'm like, no, no, no, you don't understand. That's all the clothes I got. I need my bags. So we get to his condominium and we went to this place called the California Country Club, which is where I was going to train with Gardner Malloy. But he had a condo there and it was owned by Cesar's Palace. And so we go up to his condo. We get in there and our bags are there. I'm like, damn, is this magic? What the hell? How did we get our bags blown away? But it was my first formal experience of life of the rich and famous. You know what I'm saying? Damn, these guys got magic, man. I mean, we ain't got it like that. I don't have it like that in the Bahamas, you know what I mean? So I got my first coaching experience from Gardner Malloy, the great Gardner Malloy. You know, obviously, and he was great. He was stubborn. He was mean, but he meant well. And I was not going to blow my chances at this chance to play tennis. Yes, I was going to ask you that because, you know, a lot of like we always talk about people from Barbados, from the US version of the island, from the Bahamas, finding their way to Florida at some point. Right. Yes. So comments on the island. And at some point, somebody makes a phone call, sees him at a tournament, sees him at ITF. And before you know it, they are one of the academies in Florida. So is that when at 11 years old, is that when you made your move to Florida? It was at 12. I had my first experience with coaching with Gardner Malloy. Yes. And I would. And the very next year at 13, I went for the summer and then I actually went to a military high school in Florida. I played state championships, got to the semifinals in Florida and everything. I was highly recruited in Florida. Florida State, Florida, Stetson, you name it, UCF. Didn't really want to stay in Florida because I don't really like Florida, believe it or not. Southeastern Oklahoma State University. So there were a lot. I got accepted at USC, but not a scholarship, obviously, because remember, if you're from the islands, you can't play the national tournaments. You have to be an American. So if it wasn't by word of mouth, you weren't getting in. And that's exactly how I got to the Ohio State University. Just by word of mouth, man. And they flew me up, man, for a visit. The minute I hit ground, that was it. Decision made. Now, that's interesting you say that because a lot of people don't really understand that. That if you are from one of the smaller islands, you aren't playing Kalamazoo, San Diego, none of the USTA, Midwest, all that kind of stuff. Florida sectionals. And so it is about word of mouth and relationships and just international relationships between college coaches and coaches overseas and in Mexico or the Bahamas to actually find players. You know, it ain't just, let me go play Kalamazoo, somebody's going to see me. By the time they get to Kalamazoo, they already got somebody from Europe that they saw, you know what I mean? Or the Bahamas. Right. And then back then, remember, the ITF junior tournaments were done different because it was done by invitation. Well, certain countries had certain allotment, right? Like the United States would get like 10 players in the slams, in the junior slam. Islands like the Bahamas got like one player invited. And of course, I never got invited. For whatever reason, we're not going to get into that. Players before me got invited. My turn, nothing. Players after me got invited. And I was always one or two in my country. But anyway. So you go to the Ohio State University. Did you do your recruiting visit when it was snowing or when it wasn't snowing? You know, we know we see guys in the Midwest trying to fight to go to Florida, UCLA, Texas, TCU, and you went from Miami to Columbus, Ohio. I went luckily in March. It was turning a little, you know. And you know, it was cool, man, because they had block parties and everything, man. And I mean, I was in awe because 64 ,000 students, man, you know, that's the population of my whole island. And I was like, I'm going to go to university with 64 ,000 people. Dang, that was amazing. And I always wanted to go to a big school. So, but never thought of Ohio State. All my friends that played football obviously wanted to go to Ohio State. So they were jealous when I went up there and came back and told them how great it was. Now, how good was the school back then? Were y 'all continuing for a championship? Were y 'all, you know, top 25? What was the story? No, man, we weren't even, we weren't even top, we weren't even top, I don't know, we were top 80, man. You know, we had a good three, four players and we fell off at five and six. And then we had maybe one or two good doubles team. And then we had some injuries on our team that hurt us also. So you can't win with four players. You know what I mean? You need a six players, but the team was great. And I got what I wanted. You had Ernie Fernandez, who was a graduate, would come back and practice and train with me. I had pros that would come in and I was able to hit with them. So to keep myself going. Now, one of my best coaches and persons instrumental in my development, Ron McDaniel, was there at Ohio State with you. So, you know, he always tells us these stories about how great he was. How good was Ron? You know, and by the time he started coaching me, you know, he had the braces on his knee. He had surgery. You know what I mean? So he'd stay in the corner and bang with me cross court. You know what I mean? Yeah. Ronnie was good, man. Ronnie was good. Serving volley. He had a great serve. He had good hands. Ronnie was good. In fact, Ronnie beat me in our challenge matches. It was the only match like I lost in challenge matches. It was Ronnie that won that. We became real tight, real good friends. That was my boy in college, no doubt about it. You know, we still talk tonight. No, he was good. He was good. He did get injured. Unfortunately, we were playing Harvard one time when an overhead came down. And we needed him, man. If we had him, we could beat top 50. One player. But it was unfortunate, man. I felt bad for him. So you go from Ohio State who wasn't top 25 in the country at that time. Now they're just a perennial powerhouse, right? And then you take that and you get top 100 in the world and make it on the Pro Tour. Yes. And we've seen players win NCAA's and never become top 100. Right. So what made you believe you could make the transition? What was the switch that happened as you go to what then, obviously Ohio State's a big school but a small tennis program at the time, right? To really make that transition. Well, we had a good schedule, number one, which was good. And remember, I found my purpose early. So you know what, when you find your purpose, and I teach this all the time Kamal, nothing's going to stop you. It doesn't matter where you go to school. It doesn't matter if you really want it, you're going to find a way. And my purpose was so deep. I don't care where I went. I was going to find a way to do it. Obviously, I wasn't worried about my tennis. I kept developing and stuff. And I was top 20 in college, despite being at Ohio State and not a powerhouse, I was top 20.

"Train of thoughts segment my buddy from WFAN radio, S and Y TV in New York, Sally cotta, Sal, how are you? I'm okay. I'm looking forward to next week. The holiday, you know, this is the best time of the year. Get the holiday season. Crank up that Delilah. And here we go. I am definitely looking forward to Thanksgiving. Giant cowboys. We'll talk more about it next week. I don't want to waste it this week. I lost my best bet this week. You lost it. I couldn't remember. By the way, this was the one week where I was like, okay, I can live with losing that game. It's unacceptable, but I still stand by the pick. It didn't work out, whatever. I don't know how the bears blew that game. What was yours? I forgot. Seattle. Oh, okay. Yeah. Now all of a sudden, Tom Brady's back. So. I don't understand why I have a rule in my life to never bet against Tom Brady and then I did it. So that's what you knew you were in trouble when you went against that. You said it. You said you know the constellation is you were going to take the bears with me anyway. So I like the bears more than the lions and then, I don't know, I still don't know what happened in that game. All right, let me start with something bizarre, but I need to get this off my chest. Do you know what FTX is? No. Okay, me either. But and I've been able to avoid it my whole life and I don't care and I don't want to know, but now I saw it today that they're suing, I don't know who, but someone is suing Tom Brady, gisele, Steph Curry Shaq and Larry David. So I'm like, what is going on? I don't know why. I know FTX, I think it's like Bitcoin and it's worth nothing, but I don't know why people I don't know anything about it and I don't care. If you're listening to this, you don't have to tweet me because I really don't care. I just, I didn't think you would know, but I thought if you had like a one sentence explanation, but no. Well, what are they doing about? I have no idea. Like I said, I haven't paid attention to red one article. It's one of those. This is one of those things that we need to come up with a word for this. When there's a topic that you only know about it, because you scroll through Twitter and you see tweets about it. And it's a very specific thing. It's not like you scrolled through Twitter and click on anything. It's just words you see while you scroll. And every day, I'm scrolling, and I see FTX, FTX, and then today, so Larry was trending, and I clicked it, and it said something about he's being sued with all these people because of but I don't know what FTX is. Me neither, honestly. I know. It's a good point. But I don't know. Yeah, I don't even know what Bitcoin is. I know there's something called Bitcoin and it's money, but that's all I know. So you're better off. It's tanking. So you're better off. Another weird question that on the topic, will you watch any of the World Cup? I actually will. I'm oddly interested in this, and it's like soccer is not my thing. Although when it's on, I find it to be a very enjoyable watch the atmosphere is it draws me into it. Now, look, I mean, obviously like anything else. If I'm busy at a particular time when the game's up, I'm not gonna seek it out.

"Play it forward foundation, creating opportunities. Speaking of never say no. I'm transitioning here. Okay. The last time you were on this podcast was January 27th. So you were still at Fox and the rumblings were very strong that Troy was going to leave. And I threw a theory at you. And we're going to play the clip, Shelby, can you please roll that clip of Joe buck on the SI media podcast January 27th? Imagine next year, week one, four 25. I can already see the look on your face. Let's say it's about to come out. Let's say you're in SoFi at four 25 week one. You get on camera. Welcome to SoFi for the rams and Seahawks. I'm Joe buck and he's the Hall of Famer Tom Brady. Okay, well, there you go. If Tom Brady is standing there, there's zero chance Tom Brady is standing anywhere near me. I don't even think I've ever been in his prep maybe three times in my life, but that ain't happening. I feel like I'm on an apology. Why? You're not standing part of that was true. Brady's at Fox now. Oh, he is. Because he did a FIFA promo or a World Cup? You think he's walking away from $375 million? His ass will be in that book next year, don't worry. Really? You don't think so? You think he's gonna play? You think he's gonna play next year? I think he could play next year. Really? Yeah, I think he's the least of Tampa Bay's worries. Oh, I agree with that a 100%. I just think 46 years old. Sandy's definitely gonna play Tampa Bay. I'm not saying he's definitely gonna play. I have no idea. I haven't talked to Tom Brady since whenever we did a game of theirs last year. So I don't know Tom Brady, other than when I've spoken to him, couldn't be a better guy. But I think there's so much up in the air in his life right now for anybody to go, hey, he's 100% doing X, Y, or Z I think. So you think there's a chance he never calls an NFL game for Fox. Is there a chance? Yeah, I think there's a chance. I mean, who knows where his family life takes him? Who knows where if he plays one more year if he doesn't? I know there are people at Fox who are who would say there's a chance that he doesn't call a game there. And $375 million. He's going to walk away from it. You know, I just don't know. I think this is you trying not to apologize because my prediction was correct. I'm just looking for a little bit. Let me say that let me go back. Your prediction sucks. Your prediction has no, what do you mean? I predicted Tom Brady will go to Fox. Tom Brady's going to Fox. Let's go back to your scenario. It's four 25. I've been SoFi Stadium. And I'm saying hello everybody. I'm Joe Bach, and I'm here with the Hall of Famer. Tom Brady. Not one of those things is possible. I didn't know at the time Fox is going to be dumb enough to let you enjoy go to ESPN.

"The way back to the hotel. And it's been nothing but kind of the same feeling since. It was exhilarating. It is every Monday night and then I get to go home and spend the week with my kids getting ready for the next game. It's an entirely different feel for my life. And I think it's made me better. It's made me better on air. I think I'm probably the best version of myself doing football these days. Just because I'm not going a hundred different directions. And I don't feel rushed. So yeah, I think it's been a win in that regard. Do you ever look back and think about how insane it was in the off season during that period of time when all of the broadcasters were short of shuffling around you and Troy going from foxy as pian and Al went to Amazon and Carter street comes in the mix? Partially responsible, but it got so much play and attention and you're in the middle of it. So when you're in the middle of it, I'm sure I think you're trying to block out the noise. But now that it's 11 months later, that was really crazy and why do people care about this so much? Or do you not even think about it? Well, I do. I mean, I understand why you would be interested in Andrew and Richard and I just don't maybe there's an appetite for it. To me, it was like, you know, people just want to see the games. And they want to see the team they want to watch. And whatever channel it's on, I think we're all conditioned now. Now we're into the broken through another wall with Amazon. the game? What time is it on? And who's calling the game? I don't really care. I don't know that people give that much of a shit about who's doing the game. But I do. I do the I wanted to be nothing's changed there either. I wanted to be with Troy. I'm thankful every week I'm standing next to him. You know, it's a great comforting, comfortable feel for both of us that, you know, in kind of a high stress job, I know where he's going and vice versa. And we've leaned on each other through this. So it's a transition. It's a new producer, a new director, new support people, a lot of support people at ESPN, which has been awesome. A lot of in game help, which we didn't really have before on a slack monitor. I never even knew what that was. So it's a little different, but at its core, it's Troy and me. And yeah, I mean, I guess it was interesting for people to write about and read about, but I don't think people really care that much. It's embarrassing. I mean, I hate that the money's out there. My dad is spinning in his grave going, what the hell is going on with all this money with network broadcasters? I was born too early. And he's right. I mean, he would be right. It's crazy. And, you know, if somebody's willing to pay it, I'm dumb, but I'm not dumb enough to say no. It's weird for me because I don't care about the money. And I know that's something that people do care about. And I'm always torn about am I supposed to mention this?

"Of my aim for buying it in the end, followed by trying to talk to Sal wakata. And buck gets into a lot of the move from Fox to ESPN, how his first year calling Monday Night Football is going. Gets into his relationship with Troy Aikman, differences between Fox and ESPN get into Thursday Night Football, how Al Michaels is doing, calling a horrible schedule, and a lot of other things with Joel and a lot of Tom Brady stuff and how Tom will do as a play by player and Joe possibly if he would have stayed at Fox working with Brady, so we get into all that. Before we get to the episode and the interviews, make sure you check out recent SI media podcast if you haven't listened. Great run of guests lately. That's the worst introduction I've ever had today. I just, you know, 20 years at Fox. And now you're The Voice of Monday Night Football. It was a different 28. Well, the NFL you did for 20 with Troy. That's, well, not with Troy, yes. Yeah. Well, that's funny. But I did the NFL at Fox for 28 years, Jim. Right, right. Come on. But I'm talking about researchers in that. "Throughout the year and how it might go one might be the right time. He's not telling me what those are. And i didn't get the sense that the results of games were really all that mattered. I think there they wanna see. They see justin fields in practice every day. He said he's improving by the minute literally. He still has work to do what more you want. Good process for For your team. You want a good process at cs martin well-thought-out in the to think about all contingencies what you want. I don't like it as a player. I understand the palach. The point is what i know is saying and what jeff say are two completely opposing points of view. You're talking like a player in the locker room. And i get it. That's the way you were talking like someone with a long term view of this. Which is what they picture to have the franchise so you think matt nagy will be there next year then if this process works out i don't know but here's my thing right. We talk about guys. Coaching for their jobs. The right thing to do is not to coach prior job. Like as long as you're the head coach of the bears you got to be the head coach of the bears and do the right thing for them and if you want to be an organization. Builder as opposed to a sunday coach. I i think that's that movements there when you draft a quarterback general manager the only part of this sort of rubs me the wrong way is that we act like it's either or is it like the one or the other and that both can't be true which is to say that putting just fields iron field right now because it gives you the best chance to win right now somehow automatically is in the lesser of the best interest for them long-term. Both of them can be true. He might be their best option right now and it might not stone is development or whatever. It is their word i mean. That's my argument. Generally is think quarterbacks learned from being on this island. I tend not to believe in that and take a year to learn how to read defenses or learn how to identify the mic. Like you get better by playing. That's how you get better. So i like the idea of having justin feels. Yeah go in there and get better zip. This that wilson is playing. He ran for his light. Yes against the panthers. Right good defense by the carolina panthers. Everybody knew it was a mismatch up front. Justin feels going to face the same thing and next year. It may not be any better job. Josh was better by the end of that game to exactly he learns right. When i got to roll out window a half to eat. It went to step up in the pocket. You don't learn by most in football you gotta be out there to get going. I guess my take away from the conversation was that they have a plan that they made a sober time right in the off season. And they're not gonna let results of games changed that plan and if it turns out to be a bad one. Then i'm sorry pays a pro. Yeah exactly sometimes when managing makes a decision in a sober time all the fans need to get drunk as.

"Thirty times. He don't for a little over two hundred yards an interception right now. Interceptions a tip get but at the end of the day. You're telling me justin field couldn't have been out on that field and done for you more than eighty and this is not any problem. I've listen. I think he's a good quarterback. I am telling you. Justin fields in that locker room. Everybody knows gives you a better chance to win it. Pisses you off because again everybody was like all you can't beat the rams will played a decent enough data. Could've i mean i. I agree with you but to play. Devil's advocate of been doesn't feels is a more athletic quarterback athletic quarterback for ten to hold onto the ball a bit long sure that offensive line is not absolute auto. You do not you need a guy who's gonna hit that back foot and get rid of it in order to keep your team healthy and keep the sax down and keep turning down you also are likely not and this is the thing i think that upsets you and upsets me like the people in the front office. Who are upstairs. That's what we call them. Because we were on downstairs right down the upstairs people are started thinking about man we gotta keep them healthy. We got a win for next year. We got to have a team of quarterback for five years from now. That's not how we think. No if you watch those games every week. Somebody's out for the season in his career so short and they're so important for us. That's a hard thing to be in the locker in. No at your coaches making a decision. That limits your chances of success. So what. i'm with you. I just wanted to be fair and matinee but you actually making what might be the most important point here and it doesn't mean it's necessarily the wrong thing to do dan. To what degree do the results of the games actually impact this decision. I don't know about results had chance to talk with nagy last week about this and says look. We had a plan when we drafted justin. We andy and justin know that and he said they've kinda gamed out scenarios.

And that tembos question for you mr graziano. Who do you think that could be. I honestly have no idea. I was thinking about offensive players to dominique says something about defensive rookie of the year now. I'm thinking defensive. I still don't know you're thinking the right way. It's gerard may also you were thinking correctly. It was a defensive humboldt. Hembo go with defensive rookies. i'm here. I'm not hard to read censure. I approve of that question. If he couldn't hear it. Hembo just shut up. And i probably deserved it anyway. Within one score a one scored only seven points down. He could actually beat you with a two point. "We're we're doing two minutes. What do yeah. And i'm not sure is but i would imagine he is. He is the holder on. Pat as well. So like you have to have i. I'm questioning. I'm just questioning got to learn how to play cover one. I gotta learn how to learn. Checks i gotta learn blitzes. You gotta learn how to catch kick. Yes that's in cake. Can't do this with the chiefs on the other side. Remind me. I used to cover the yankees joe. Torry derek jeter yankees. It'd be losing a playoff game by four runs. Somebody make an error and all of a sudden they'd be like six. And that's jesus drops the ball in the chiefs like yeah. This is great. May maybe they were actually something more to it. Than that. And i'll use golf is in analogy. People would tend to just make mistakes when tiger woods was involved and he just adds an element of pressure. Is it possible. I'm not trying to defend the country. You've got to catch the snap. Obviously but there is an element of we know. We can't make any mistakes. We have to be so perfect. We have to be even better. We normally are because mahomes is on the other side that causes some of those. I would agree with that for the op. The opposition offense right look. We used to feel pressure as high powered offense that if that offense on the other side was playing well we had two matches so that gives you anxiety that is true but a planner giving you that. Excuse for i mean it's like i mean for real man i mean that's it easier i could. I'm just telling you. If i'm a breath i would've lost mama. Just cannot have that again. The margin for areas. The chiefs is zero. We all understand that because of mahomes. But they had them. They had them and literally gave it away saying all drive shorter. Because it's not like you always stop them dirty. "Vacillating a little bit right. I mean but adam you just laid out some of these quarterback competition situation especially with these. Young guys are really complicated right now. So the vacillation makes sense. I must have vaseline. Dan should kyle shanahan start trae lance week. One yes but i did not feel that way. In the first quarter of last night's game frustrated watching double clutch and miss high throws but then he got hot in his second quarter and then he settled in. I'm going this is the guy that looks like he's ready to go. Yeah he's getting. The guy who needs through thirteen. Three hundred eighteen passes in college is getting it and i also think the reality we talked about this as we've seen like five percent of what this offense is gonna look like. They're not doing any quarterback ron. We're not doing any zone so it's going to be easier on the run game in the past if you think that was being opaque about the starter he is being opaque about the flavor can words. I don't know what they pay me to do. You remember when the washington football team drafted. Rg three in college. Shannon was the offensive coordinator with his father. Mike shanahan and they went into new orleans in week. One thing is you can play and ran. Something unveiled something. See an orgy. Three wooden duck that here as well. That was just reduction. No this space age run game kyle. Shanahan is working on this off season since we're not seeing any of it and it changes everything. This offense not only doesn't add an element to trae lances run game and the rest of the run game. It makes the whole entire passing attack easy for him because he's gonna throw in a wide open due to the middle of the field breath. I'm getting so excited because she can. Simplify quarterback is in conflict the entire game and it's not like rg. Three is a good calm. But he's rg three plus he's going to be. Rg three plus cam newton. So it's not even going to be like just lake but it's the power run game that on. espn plus. That's why they went that direction. Because only trae lance could do certain things that other quarterbacks and people copying his offense for awhile and copy the offense trae lamp. And there's to be knows trae lance. But you're right. There's going to be close to take the high g too. I saw jimmy g. Throw the same interception. So i thought i'm going to get the lows jimmy highs that he can't give me. That trainer has the potential to the one thing. I would say though. It's a really tough division and you're accepting some extreme lows that could lose you games in a tough division. You think they're okay with every defensive coordinator wants to play jimmy. Jean guarantee you every defensive coordinator wants to museum not trailing many of the same issues that we talked about chicago just take. It applies san francisco. It's the same storylines. "Glad you're with us on. Nfl live just in fields quite stellar. In a second free season outing this weekend posting significantly lower passer rating compared to his debut against the dolphins but he was also under a lot of duress against the bills. Here's matt nagy with more when you go back and you look at what india is doing in these last two preseason games i understand the part of you know we haven't been getting first downs with the and there's been three and outs and that i get that but andy's decision making has been has been really good. He's made some plays that maybe couldn't have or or shouldn't have been able to make any has but we like what he's doing right now with the ones in practice and i think that's what probably makes us feel good but we also like were justin's at and seeing him grow and so that's what we got to kind of talk through these next couple of weeks man. Do you see this playing out based on things that you know first of all. He said all along that any built is the starter but he said there the less so what was that. I don't know he's heading. That's not what he's been saying off season. That was the first time. I heard that clip and that my first that was a little different than what we've heard to me to to me. That feels a little bit like in dan. Tell me what you think here. Hey i'm giving myself an out in case actually when it started fields and should he. He should justin fields. But i also think he sees what everybody else sees. This guy gives us the best chance to win. Because he's a special talent the way i phrased it is matt. Nagy has to start just in fields. He's got to save his job. Very rarely do head coaches. Get too young quarterback thing with general manager ryan pace to get too young quarterbacks. The chicago bears ownership. Can't let justin play because that offensive line. Is that bad. Who and i think. There's two reasons why young quarterbacks shouldn't play in the nfl they don't have a skill or trade can allow them to survive or have been around him so bad. And i'm sitting there watching this game at comb getting angry about it because when you as a coach. Put a young quarterback on the field. You're number one. Job is to make sure it's either you guys up front control it. I don't care what the quarterback says. your job is to control the protection quarterback. Listen to them. Oh are acquitted quarterback you run the line of scrimmage. You figured although make sure everybody's on the same page. But when i showed that clip and nobody's talking. I'm sitting there going well the second reason. You shouldn't play a rookie quarterback because everybody around him is not good enough right and there is a legit chance. You ruined him. And that's the reason why i say. The bears organization can't plan at the end of the day they needed creator at quarterback not a distributor and just fields has the creative ability. The only case for not starting is the idea that you can't protect them. What you saw there is that to happen over and over and over. Oh we don't want to feed him to aaron. Donald and week one guessing you got in week three myles garrett week six daria smith you got i mean goodness it gets worse and worse and worse. I think you've got the steelers after that the difficult schedule and at some point you're going to start him at some point he's going to play a difficult pass rush and i'll say this people always bring up the david carr example. David carr was ruined because he played behind terrible offense. It's two thousand three anymore. Offenses have the ability to not only skiing. Better protection for your quarterback. They also have quarterbacks who can elude pressured. Look at justin field. Thank you can survive. It's not going to be pretty. There's gonna be more plays like that where they blow the protection due to whatever mutation or simply about offensive line but this kid has the athleticism the mental tools. We saw that ohio safe to survive it. And he's going to get better and he's going to need those reps frankly and he gives them the best chance of winning she. This is the issue and this is what they're facing in new england and chicago and san francisco. Everybody wants the young guys to play and told them they get out there and they struggle because the not as express he said. Well what do you want to know. You wanna pull that guy and go back to. The veteran would be a steadier choice and they sign any dolton to a starting quarterback contract money with the idea that they really liked him with the idea that they wouldn't be able to get somebody like justin fields in the draft but they were very fortunate and we all know that justin fields turn is coming right. What's the problem with dole. Starting the season playing until they feel even more comfortable about the offensive y and just justin fields getting a little bit more. What's the problem. What's the rush. My pushback has context matters with the situation. New england is a completely different continuity insecurity for those people running in making those decisions. Then chicago chef de i would say this. What happens if they start. Andy dalton and they go into and green based to know well then we're four games back in division. Hey justin not only. Do you have to figure out how to play quarterback in the nfl and not only does your offensive line stink. Get us out of this. Four because bill. Yes because matt nagy. You have to look long picture. Okay he's can't though but but in a way he has to. He has to know that. We've got a quarterback we're going to build around and i think that management and ownership is going to stay but maybe i've been i've been around the nfl long enough. I understand but you know what that's been a patient organization by lawyer and so they've got a young quarterback and they hire matt nagy because they believe in the work that he does with young quarterbacks so they know that he can work with him through. "Much. But i guess pass time right. Oh yeah way man. Few things we wanted to kind of wrap up our wild beer discussion there before we move onto so a couple of things with the bacteria that are used to make wild and sour beers. They're not as predictable as what we call clean. East like the saccharomyces strange. Is that right. Yeah to a degree. I think it does kind of your understanding but yeah and so with that you may get one that is more sour or has different characteristics. You may not know once time has done and it takes a lot longer to do. Its job correct. It does. yeah so you may not know at the end of it. Exactly what you're going to have to a degree that's true degree. So what's the other degree there. Well i think with a lot of the technology that we have nowadays like for example. Pcr it kind of takes a lot of the unknown that little bit of magic outweigh 'cause you kinda know what's there and i'm a pretty ferocious taster of our barrels satellite constantly mike tracking their progress. Seeing where they are. I say constantly usually about every six months. So it's one of those things where it's very easy to identify what's not going to work. And then when you. If i could work it's how will it work. Okay then you get into this world of blending and then you try to put together. This cohesive idea and of course everything has to possess intent. So what are you trying to achieve. All these questions should be asked prior to producing a beer but sometimes magic happens in that weird space and sometimes to be honest with you. There's so many beers people like. Wow how did you do this and i wanna tell them like fully no right there. So we've out. We got there. And i think the real judgment comes at the very end which is how you blend it. And then when it's ready to be presented. Is it actually worth presenting and if so are you gonna market it so all right. How important is blending. I mean could you bring anything sour or wild to market without doing some amount of blending. Could you just go all out and be cool with it. You can absolutely take something without blending to market without a doubt but when i think about the complexities that come from each individual barrel in the nuances. They possess so rarely do for the batch sizes that we have to make so rarely do those few barrels taste so exactly the same or even if it wasn't in a barrel which feels strange even say but blending is one of those things that why wouldn't you wanna do. It's one of the most magical aspects of the style of beer production all the different pieces create the some and within there is like i think that's where the passion of abreu kind of steps in as well as the excitement for the product. Because you don't really know how to turn out until it turns out. So if i got to blend everything i would but of course. I only reserve this for the barrels. Okay now you may have answered. This peterson forgive me if you have when you start a beer. Do you have a goal in mind. For what the finished beer is going to be or do you decide once you have your barrels and you start you blending. That's a really good question. So oftentimes when i produce something. It is with the general idea of intent because we have thirty zero system so it's not a small amount of liquid from there things go in different directions. So you take that you have. You put them together. Oftentimes blending this from many different batches of different beer styles even so it's a hard thing to say because it usually. I like to believe everything has a plan. But it's not the truth. Okay so it's a it's a happy man here. We have a general direction when you're making something in and if you don't quite go in the direction you're planning to go with what comes out you can calibrate absolutely it's just you know recalculating wheel. Just everything needs to possess a level of intent. There has to be some level of intent. And of course the ultimate level of intensity to produce something. That's delicious exciting creative beautiful you know so as long as it takes those boxes. I'm all about it but sometimes you end up. They're intentionally sometimes you end up there and accident okay. What has been your worst disaster in bruin. How much time do we have. We got we got. What about seven minutes. Yeah some i can tell you that another show for this the and disasters and of course all my worst fears. Hopefully no one's tried but definitely been ones where i'm just like you know face palm like. Why did we do this. And of course i'm not gonna go name those beers because i think there's always a person behind beer whether it's chur myself i don't mind thermos up under the bus but we have team and i'm not going to sit here and say that one person's idea of success is a failure because reading forget that there are people behind these beers. Were so quickly able to judge now if the technology that we have in the platforms that are out there that i just think the whole idea is kind of it does more damage than it does. Good and i think that constructive criticism is a very powerful tool but rarely do we seek constructive in our criticism in this industry. So ultimately i just bear sucks to these guys even know how to brew comments without consequence. You're gonna get that. Yeah so i mean like the worst spears that we have made. Y'all have not tried thank you. That's good what once again just comes down to disarm it like if you were just not able to recognize that this is not the right thing but you just need to convert it to cash or whatever your reason for putting out bad beer. I think that comes down to one zero so how they produce but ultimately for us. We've never taken that path. And if we have. I apologize and i will say this along those lines. I do know some breweries. That smaller breweries may be more cash draft or whatever more that have had beers at. They've admitted this isn't what i wanted. And maybe they've thrown some more hops in or they've done something in its went to market. That never does your brewery any good. No it does not for the short money you make. Let's be honest. There's very few intentional sour. Stoute's not the pick on that but there's a few different things where it's so hard to judge of course because remember. This is a business so people make decisions but we like to try to play the long game versus the short game so sure if you put a beer out there for the sake of selling that particular beer but it hurts your future sales because people hate the beer what he you accomplish that is so much more damaging than people realize in the moment so crazy. It's long-term damaging. You don't see it on your immediate financial records but you know what i'll see it. You will see yes you will. yes you will. Well peter we talk some about wild and sour beers kind of on the flip side of that coin. Monday night has hop hut fairly new. What's that a couple years old now. is that right. I mean to me. It seems so much longer because of the orange into before we launched but we actually ended up launching the hop. I think it was february. Or march of twenty twenty It was february. It was right before covid. Okay wow was it. I thought it was later that yeah it does seem longer. What is the concept behind the hot. Some of it sounds obvious but I think there's more to it than i noticed when i was reading up on it. It's extremely obvious. It is just to explore hoppy beers really with the focus of new england. Ipa's as coming out of georgia. Okay and there's kind of a musical tie and that's one of the things. I didn't realize honestly i did not seriously realize until i was preparing for the show. I'm like oh my god. There's a music tie incorrect. There isn't so fun story about is that i create a playlist every quarter just the music that i'm listening to and i create beers around the songs so here comes the sun which and with the help of my friends was solely built around the fact that cove it was kicking. Everyone's buds like lift. Something up on everything now came from the fact that i was hanging out with a win butler when we did the over under festival at the brewery and hang out with them and that was pretty transformative time and transformed my mental state. Not going to say how well you were trying. There is transformation definitely transformation. Okay okay sometimes. It's the song name sometimes. It's the lyric from the song same as it ever. Was things like that but my father's always been a avid music collector and listener and some music's always. Of course i think with any artist plays a role the mind state that you're in so i've always found it to be a fun challenge because i've never been stimulated around the production of ipa's. I think that there's a lot to hide behind with somebody hops but new england as something that we never did well so it wasn't going to go kind of dog style without trying to approach it from the classical way but still progressive and contemporary way. And i wanted to be able to jump in that space in the hang with other people that thrive there and so it took a lot of time we developed our own proprietary kind of how strain of yeast spent about a year and a half var. We didn't want us to launch a beer just to exist within the space. We wanted to exist within the space in a high caliber. At least i mean that would make our fans excited and to contribute to that style beer versus just being a part of it. I wanna see more tiki inspired beers because what the physical hop hut is a tiki bar. It is i need to see more tiki beers air. Can i count on you peter. I will take that into consideration. Yes your comments have been noted as long as you don't do it on read it all right okay to if you may have to. If we don't see results next couple of weeks we may have to take. I'll be sending. Hey guys i found out. We can control him there. You're gonna send out letters magazines lipstick. I'll be nice. And i'll use all letters from your beer bottles so familiar. You're not recycling. I'm sorry that is kind of cycling. Honestly it's hard for the forensics to track it. So i i understand your path. Yeah peter what should people keep an eye out for for monday night brain. Just keep an eye out for hopefully exciting honest intentional beers. I think what we're trying to do is not just to be a part of the space but we're trying to help mold the space whether it's in our state or district the country whatever it is but we just like to make beers that i think represent where we are now. Try to pay homage to the past whether it's through historical styles but ultimately we wanna make something that's beautiful creative delicious etcetera etcetera so some look out for a bunch of different things. All right peter. Thank you so much for joining us. We really appreciate it guys. Thanks for having me. How silly well that about wraps it up for this episode of the beer guy's radio show join us next week as we talk with crooked run brewing beer guy's radio on facebook twitter instagram. "That it was noon. I probably shouldn't have said anything you read it in your facebook. Antibac- moms grew i. Yes i did that. No i got it from my horoscope to okay. Yeah that sounds reasonable there. Peter kylie so. I think we went out. We mentioned. We're gonna talk a little more about seven deadly stoute's what i'll say to people. Check it out. Just go look and see on the monday night. Website that description. It's sold out now. Long gone right very much but if you find someone out there you bottle share something Do it up do it up. Do a trade for talk into opening it at a bottle share. Yes have a good time with it. Well peter we want to do a little talk with you about wild and sour beers and monday night. Brewing now has three facilities. You have the original location. We were talking about the google. Walk through you have the garage. Which is large. I don't know. I don't know square foot. I'm not good at that. But it's big big bary big event space lots to go on there and then recently opened in birmingham alabama grew up location. Correct that is correct. And i haven't been to the birmingham location yet. So i have to get on there and chat. You guys would love that place. Imagine we'd digging birmingham's a little beer toddlers trimtabs real good good people. Oh yeah reminds me of like twenty sixteen atlanta. Yeah definitely starting to blow up a scott. Its own little images on culture. Good people a lot of opportunity. Huntsville's man i've i've always enjoyed going to huntsville. Got their beer in space rockets rockets everywhere. Yeah fantastic well peter so one of the goals of the garage you do barrel aged and wild and sour beers there and you have a cool ship. The crunch ship among the shit. That's right it gets cronk in years for cool ship is. Can you tell us a little bit about that. Yeah i think it's still a somewhat debated topic. So i will talk about it from how i perceive it. Okay so originally. I think that cool ships can mean a lot of things some. We always joke about like you know if you have a cake cut in half bathtub ship. Boom i generally don't take that stance i look at the geometry and i look at thermal dissipation. The room itself. Is it a living room. All these different little things. We went and built out the cool ship room. We kind of had these ideas where we wanna have good. Wowed airflow comes through the vineyard in the garden and orchard and everything so when you go to the garage you see that. I goes into the cool ship when we were designing the We used to take these fog. Machines put it outside of our louvred windows and we would see how the air would go in over the cool shifts. We got the perfect airflow in there. Have a fan in there but untreated georgia pine the whole nine two so one day. If we use a room it could be a living room so the whole thing. it's about a hundred gallon. Cool ship the geometry on it. I don't remember exactly but it's designed to where we can see three dissipation in roughly around ten hours. Okay and what does that mean. What are you looking for. So we put our warren there around one hundred ninety five degrees and we will not take out of there until it's around eighty fahrenheit so of course that depends on the temperature outside. We shoot for usually anything around under thirty one preferably around twenty seven thirty fahrenheit so when we did it we just kinda looked to see how quickly we could drop temperature so we did a lot of water tests than we did even sugar water test to increase the gossipy all kinds of things so it took a really long time before we actually got comfortable with idea of using it for the first turbine mash brew. That we would do the whole ideas for us has been to do kind of a method tradition now kind of three year. Blend is the first thing that we're going to do which will be coming out. Hopefully and beginning of twenty twenty two which is going to be doing blending for the first three years so so far nothing that has come out of. The ship has been released to the public. That is correct. Lamb bakes. you didn't you didn't give it a shot to an early like one year. Lam or whatever. I think that there's a lot that we could do a lot of things that we could say. But i want to be historically accurate as possible about what we try to emulate before we go and do it the monday night brewing way but a lot of the debate around the beers that you can produce there. It's really just about how you described them. So of course i wanna do turban mash and everything historically accurate but ultimately. I don't think we can call it. Sure i'd lamb american wild l. Brian i think i think it's like a method traditional levels one in or something like that mtm so i'm thinking licking mt one i think is the lamp. Inspired style right or just. It's just method traditional to it. As but i'm i thought about doing a one or two but i thought the first way i wanted to release it would be true three or going to do a true empty three. And then we're going to do empty three francois so okay. Carbon and that is of one two and three year old crowd else cracked so the idea of three summers. Yes yeah an rambagh being. That's razzed right. Correct whole fruit. Carbonic maceration long conditioning times and then about a year in bottles. What will be shooting for for conditioning. And it's hard in georgia defined the window to use your coal ship right absolutely especially on the very beginning when we did it in first time in twenty seventeen does also in a lot of construction was still happening over in that area while heaven all these other places. So it's been actually extremely difficult to find. The right window is taking a lot of cooperation from our neighbours than everyone else. So so if you have a lot of killing up in the air you really can't use that day to collect your your wild yeast. You can give it a shot. But i would not recommend okay. That's like well didn't take action to flavored flavorings construction and construction. I get nodes of festus and you know some little concrete. In their little blacktop. Yes really nice really nice. Yes we've actually gotten the taste the past three years. Okay tim who's our would seller kind of wild brewer. He runs the garage right now. Him and i did. We tasted the barrels for the first time. And i can tell you right now. I was blown away by how promising the project looks very good. That's gonna be awesome and now we actually did a wild beer with you guys. The same loving read it. That i talked about earlier. We came down with the homebrew club and We all brought our homebrew gear at monday. Night ruined kind of homebrew party. And we each brood. Whatever our system can handle and peter has confessed that he thought this was just kind of a mess because of the way we're doing correct. Yeah if you remember that day. That was a complete mess. Not only that was probably like a top five hangover morning from ireland sitting side. I was eating chick-fil-a biscuits just trying not to throw at publicly. just privately. Thirty home excited this. Heck to brew with you running around there so all said and done easily one of my favorite memories just for so many different reasons but also because of how the beers selene d on peaches and celine dion cherry sean cherries and I think the peach and cab that it's craig good memory to kind of fill in the blanks here. We went down there. We brewed with you. Guys you helped us. We developed the recipe. We brutal on our homebrew equipment. Then we all poured it into barrels a stranger and then into barrels so after that firm it out and we just kind of took the wind. And there's someone on peaches someone on cherries and it ended up being extremely well to the point. i think. Didn't that end up getting served at strong beer fest or wild beer beer. That's right. yeah so and that's something you know. There's a lot of times brewers cool about helping out home. Sure don't often with a hodgepodge. This gets the results and exceptional result considering all the variables going into it. Yes i think turned out much better than ever should have. They were nice. Yeah very honestly it made people internally be like oh anyone can make this mike. No no you just ask. Skill brewers and a little bit of luck. Yeah a lot of bit of luck a lot. Look a little bit of magic in a terrible hangover. There you go that we found a formula absolutely so wild beer. What makes a beer wild as compared to on the flip side of that we call them clean beers. I think that's another point of contention. But my interpretation i like to use potato macy's or just wild yeast in general. So sometimes they can be die static as it can be. All kinds of things from your. I called atmospheric terroir whatever's in the air but for me wild definitely incorporates. Pretend macy's okay. But some of those other bacteria we have like lactobacillus peo- caucus somerton of macy's get those. Sometimes you can. But when i see people do lab grown lactobacillus strains of like this. That me doesn't feel as well as much as a field. Okay hold a mixed culture versus a wild gotcha and people also mistakenly kind of the blanket term beer. That's not always the case. Correct correct i think it just comes down to like the shared lexicon and how we apply it to the products that we make because some of the breath peers have had have been funky have been interesting but honestly from our standpoint not that our like you've fruity fruity and funky. So yeah it's interesting to apply that label let blanket lead to everything that involves riot out does not. You're listening to the beer. Guy's radio show..

The guy's radio show remember. All episodes are available on demand. So if you missed the broadcast. Get the podcast. Bear guys. Ready was available all popular and unpopular podcasting apps now. Let's get back to monday night brewing. Peter kylie monday night ruin so we got. We actually drank a beer during the break. And then we got another one here. And let's spend a little time talking about those bears deal bourbon barrel drafty kilt. So drafty kilt a bears scotch l. Correct that's correct and we have bvd k. Here in bryan. You actually brought in a bottle of the first bourbon barrel. drafty kilt. Twenty thirteen peter. Is that correct. We started producing it released in two thousand fourteen. Okay twenty so we had a twenty fourteen and twenty sixteen and there was actually interesting. There's a little break and bbc k. There were a bunch of people. Raised hack did that. Influence your decision at all. Yes but i wanna make sure. I clarify that. Okay but yeah. No idea was that we intentionally took a year off and tony nineteen okay genuinely because we had a lot of other things that we want to explore and so when i remember writing about this and twenty nineteen. It turned into a joke that we needed to make more room in our would seller. Yes so No it was i. I kind of got to the point with making bbc k where to be completely honest the younger man back then felt like the beer wasn't appreciated. So i'm gonna take a break and see if okay see if it's my emotional reaction or if people want it and they were expecting it and we take the one year off and of course people weren't pleased about that and then yes as a burrito money neighboring. We make beer for everyone besides us in a sense so they've made times where i joke with my team where mike look. If we made beer for us would be be very different tap list. There'd be a lot of pills nurse you know. That was one of those things where it was so fun to see the passion to see people genuinely give you know kicker rat's tail i guess yeah what was i saw that passion. I thought was really cool. Took a year off us a little bit of new technology that we're talking about during the break. You know we ran it through him. Lineker filtration at the end. Once we blended it got down to one micron really nice. Got some of the noise. Out of the way really brightened up the flavors rowdies. That beer now is relatively bulletproof. Nice can't wait to see how it ages so we did it read it. We did you guys in a weird way did ask one card. You get to us. Okay get to do that every five years. And that's our local form. Read it here pretty good size form. Lots of people come in there. Peter you're nice enough to share info with us. And i think anytime anything. Monday night was posted on there. The like you can do this whereas the room for bbc i remember you saw. People were passionate about the beer. And you're like okay right. Yeah if they really want. Of course we're gonna make it for him now. You say might be under appreciated but it gets metals really early on metals are not when trout would've appreciation is that it's always cool to get accolades. I think that those are more important for our team just because you know bring beer. It's very difficult. It's as long nights. I like the metals for our team. Outside of that it was just one of those things where there's so much to explore it to bring it back was fun but to take a break was also really enjoyable. I get that. I can understand asher and you know. I guess there are just thinking back. You know if you go into a place like sweetwater you see all these awards. They've won for beers that they've discontinued sometimes as little as six months after they won the award taxes porter. That seems like almost a A death knell for for a beer won an award while this is not gonna last. It's career marketing man. Yeah that's exactly what it is. Not what is marketing. You know it's just one of those things where especially in the beginning of monday brewing. We really explored very not gonna say unexciting by just kind of benign styles and watching how craft beer is just exploded. There's so much to explore a little bit more room to explore houses like let's take some time off. Let's do some other stuff. Twenty nineteen was year. We did so much fun. Stuff that led the way for twenty twenty twenty twenty one even twenty twenty two so taking a year off from one. Beer cherry glen. I mean the whole georgia. Beer scene is grown up. And i can remember looking at the monday night. Original brewery had a google street view. Walk through that. You could go into that walk through seriously. Showed like to tanks and a whole bunch of empty space. So interesting is you guys. Were open the garage to go back and look at that and think not only. Is the original location. Totally full of equipment. But you've got this massive second facility and to still see kind of where you guys were in the beginning. There was still out there on google for everybody to walk. Is it really. Oh i would like to see off. It's been updated now. This was a couple years. I think it would have been updated. I do remember when they came through and did that. I was like whoa. Do these things walk through the whole story. I did that for a A brewery to sadly close down they were up for sale. You could walk through the entire brewery upstairs and down. This is the coolest thing ever why doesn't every burrito this. i mean obviously. It's probably pain to do it. But you know what we've had both of these different urban barrel as draft kilts of the to which you peter which do you think held up the best. The fourteen or sixteen. I cannot believe. I'm going to say this but it's the two thousand fourteen. I i agree really surprising. I agree with you. It's so fun that you had this. I enjoy these beers. Like when i think about beer especially barely ones. It's kind of like the book ends or whatever member the most because he started. And then you finish. Every year in the middle is another project. So it's kind of like going back in time. I remember so much like looking at a photo. You know so i remember twenty fourteen. That was the first the first time that we approach of coming from one. I always would hard bunk thing. So i did that with the beer not always a great idea beer because sometimes there's a little in the barrel but i remember the year we did this. We didn't have any of the tool. So we use a screw jordan into the bank and then got a crowbar. Pry the bugs out and there was a house under such pressure that the bunk shot about twenty feet up would hit the ceiling. And then this fog of you to kind of very quickly try to stick your racking one in there because all of a sudden the liquid nuclear because there was a little too nation but all those things. I was back when we didn't really know we were barrel because you were bringing your knowledge from the wine industry. They're correct still. There's no the shouldn't be any idea of positive. Pressure has been one of the season to learn from the transition of wine to.

"Like that. Yeah yeah peter. How's your week gone man. How have you been doing been doing well. Thanks for asking him. It's always interesting in this season of covid. But ultimately i feel like we started to acclimate right when i say that. I'm sure something will change. Course right It's a good week on. We're doing a another cool ship tomorrow night. So that's always on the list to talk about headlights. Good can't complain guys good. Yeah you've been doing. Some collaboration bruce which will talk about a little bit more. We one of our brewers. He was on episode number one brian. Now little cottage bruno on episode number. One of your guys. Way back john sherry so you did a collaboration with him. And he's in the process of building out his brewery up so that'd be cool so it should be a good time. Yeah brian how's your week. Men would you get into you. Know it was Not terribly eventful we We spent a fair amount of time in the studio working on our gear which we have new equipment here so you'll let us know. Do we sound better worse. We've got some fancy equipment in the hopes of sound and better streamline our process so well if we don't sound better we look cooler. Doing we do want cooler. Peter was really blown away by how cool it looks. Yeah i think. I think we're good understand. I can confirm and they haven't even paid me act. Actually they're better looking better sounding and i mean let's on us. This was already a whiz over. Yeah i did break into my cellar. Got into a breakside. Brewery teamwork dream work a double coconut stout from february of twenty twenty which was tasty andy. Founders back was from two thousand seventeen which was also tasty. So that's pretty much. The most of what i did the studio and then a few sellers okay to kind easy and we were in here work and we did get into a few nice beers. It is hype slam season slam season. So we got into that one. Peter slam fan ex ex hus- lamps and it's not because it's a bad beer if anything it's i think it's a great beards. Just in the world the multitudes of craft beer that are offered feels strange sometimes to go back in time. Okay i like it every once in a while but ultimately why seek it out with the same ferocity as it did as a young man absolutely understandable. Yeah and that's one that even when it was hyped or when it was hot i guess it still has a lot of people still search for but i would seek it out and i gotta be honest. It's not my favorite beer just because that's not my style. Yep bribe you love it correct. I'm a fan. i think the tradition is with hops. Lamb is always last year better in this case last year's was in fact better but i thought it was. Okay i think there was in previous years has been more of a a rich honey presence in there was this year so i don't know what would you think of that. Yeah i really. Yeah i really couldn't compare because i usually have enough. Just say okay. I tried it this year just to see what it was but on the last year's was better i have one word. This year's was great. I don't know if i would say better. That coco bunny. Oh yeah. I'm creature comforts. Nice chocolate rich milk chocolate nice coffee tones to it. Always enjoy that one coming in and really enjoyed. The coco bunny. This year. I've never been disappointed by any of them now. Youngest better and worse over the over the years but see better trending better. So i just saw. They've got a bottle of double coco. Bunny coming out soon. So keeper is out for that one but Yeah definitely you know pretty pretty chill week all around all right. Well you know what we should get into beers of the week then. Dow it's time for our fears of the week brought to you by the net craft beer and barbecue and downtown kennesaw georgia. If you are in the area so on our beer list for this week we pre-game it with a couple. Brian hudson who is opening neutral ground during company in fort worth texas currently building out He us a few of their pilot. Batches and we've only got a chance to get into one of them yet but we try their hazy. Ipm which is pretty tasty. Good beer so stand. Thank you so much for sending some samples to get into and our friends here at ironmonger. Having new barely edged barley wine. That is great called iron vice and I get some nice deep rich notes. English barley which it 'cause i'm not an american barley wine fan but this one i'm digging. What do you think of it. I think it's really good. I think it's solid and his belief. Peters said i'm going to quote him it's flawless. Flawless always good enjoyed it. I say that that sounds nicer. It was a very good beer. I said it lacked false lack flaws. Okay all right more pessimistic left off. Yeah i thought it was good. I enjoyed. I had a sneak. Peek of it and I went back for another so. Yeah i recommend it to anybody. It's it's interesting. You say that because lacked flaws. Sound like less than endorsement than definitely. What'd you think of the beer. I thought the beer is great wrong to say flawless about any beer is something i would rarely hand. I get that sure you know. There are no ten when it comes to beer. There's only nine you know as high as it goes. I'm not trying to buttery up here. Too much peter but my favorite bureau all twenty twenty out of georgia was seven deadly stoute's and that was a nine. That was a nine okay. That was a ten nine nine. Maybe i don't know the each pallet to their own. You know it was without flaws. Glad to hear that good stuff. Well brian what's happening this week in the news. What's in the news. The beer guys have the scoop time for headlines all right. So we've got some controversy in the news this week. Which seems like. That's the norm. When it comes to the news it was reported on read recently that allegedly brewing company has a big problem with sexual harassment. And what's worse is apparently people were being punished for reporting instances of harassment. Hr while the allegedly guilty parties were generally allowed to carry on with your sexist behavior so boulevard initially issued a statement saying that the charges were investigated in no harassment. Or discrimination was found. Well apparently they heard back from a lot of other former employees because the following day the they posted an apology admitted that Harassment did occur in the statement. They said they would be hiring a third party to investigate all the claims and they're setting up procedures to allow for anonymous reporting of workplace concerns. It was Too many places. Try to get off by just saying oh. We looked into this. We got this and we have seen with other breweries. How how that happens. You know how that goes yeah. I was surprised boulevard geared that they didn't seem to dive into it that deep but and in one of those things if it's one person the hr departments going to say. Hey you know. We're going to try to protect the company but when you have a tremendous number of people which reportedly happened. That came forward. You can't look the other way too. Certain point yeah this indicative of problems it is it is and i mean it's a bad way to have to go but at least it seems boulevards taking it serious they. Yeah they do seem to be trying to get back on track in other bad news article. I believe i'm saying that right may lose their trappist designation this because well there are no more trappist monks to oversee the beer production which is kind of a requirement for the trappist designation. They don't actually have to brew beer. But they do. Have to. Oversee the brewing. Apparently this could be the fate for other trappist breweries out. There in the future as catholicism is on a steep decline in europe. people simply aren't getting into that monastic beer lifestyle and the current monks are getting older. And there's a number of monasteries out there that are brewing that have maybe a dozen or less fathers they're working on it so it's kind of scary for trappist beer. I know man some good beer gotta have those monks to keep it going. Yeah so a bit of a shake-up beer's presence in the big game but wiser and other big names are not advertising in the super bowl. This year Those other big names are like pepsi and coca cola instead of running advertisements for budweiser abyan. Bevill put millions towards covid nineteen vaccination awareness campaigns in partnership with the ad council. But this is just budweiser ads. Ab inbev still plans to run. Four minutes of ads during the super bowl promoting. Bud light but seltzer michelob. Ultra seller artois so the headlines. You may be seen our little miss. Little misleading the middle. Yes because i didn't think we're going to anybody ads at all. You will. yeah crazy stuff. We listening to the bear. Guy's radio show. We do need to take a break. But we'll be.
