Netflix Is Reportedly Testing 'N-Plus' Service
"Working on something called n plus so net flicks plus and plus you know me and me and andy love a-plus But it's not an plus one. The molyneaux founded literary journal. It was not an station of the downtown bet. The everyone's one guys would be pretty psyched. Netflix came along and it was just like. Hey we love. We love what you guys are doing. We know feeling was a bestseller but it would be even better as a twenty part maxi's So anyway this survey was basically asking a lot of questions about what people might be interested in from this end plus product and what it essentially is is. It sounds like netflix effort to build. And what do they call that like. Is this like sidecar content. Like what is the thing. It's like content. is us clown car content. There is a word for it but is essentially con curatorial content around right there shows so whether it would be podcasts whether it would be editorial stuff whether it would be the ability for users or experts quote unquote to make playlists of episodes possibly even getting to work with the music that is in some of these shows. It's essentially like a elevated user experience. I guess and i. It's unclear whether this would be like something that lives inside the net flicks site or inside of the netflix's apper whether it'd be a separate product or whatever i imagine it would have netflix. Wants it all. It'd be in one place. I'd imagine it would be case
Why Are Fruit Flies Science Superstars?
"We'll come to brainstorm production of iheartradio. Hey brain stuff lauren. Vogel bomb here. If you've ever swatted fruit flies hovering over the fruit bowl on your kitchen counter and wondered what purpose they could ever possibly serve humanity. You're not alone. They are small. Today are annoying but humans owe them a huge debt of gratitude for their contributions. The science modern genetics one species in particular. Drosophila melanogaster is a superstar of tiny annoying things at least five Nobel. Prizes have been awarded to scientists for their work on fruit flies. Yes the lowly fruit fly and the larger glorious urge human have together tackle genetics and done a lot of cool stuff but like why fruit flies. And how do you keep them out of your kitchen? And do we need to blame scientists for them? Being in your kitchen to begin with a fruit flies have been used in biological studies for a long time which means there are a lot of tools and resources for scientists using Drosophila melanogaster to ask interesting questions. But there are some specific reasons. The species has always been a darling of geneticists for starters in genetics. It's helpful to have research subjects that can cycle through generations rather quickly and fruit. Flies are great at that. We spoke by email Thomas Merritt PhD professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Laurentian University in Ontario Canada. He said fruit flies create a new generation about two weeks making breeding them in the lab. Simple there are also small and easy to rare and care for and it's easy to house as many of them as you need in a single lab at one time also. Fruit flies are surprisingly similar to humans and other vertebrates their Sophomore Molyneaux gaster has fourteen thousand genes and we humans have somewhere between twenty thousand and twenty five thousand and about eight thousand of those genes analogous similarly must fly. Biochemistry is the same or similar to ours. Merritt said fruit flies are great to work on if you're interested in variation between individuals or genetic lineages there are also a great system. If you're interested in experimentally altering the environment they are so small we can do things like keep thousands of flies at different temperatures to see how temperature changes metabolism or gene activity in one. Study IN MY LAB. We used a small conveyor belt to slowly turn the vials. We keep the flies in this. Simple instrument is essentially a fly treadmill. And we can get literally hundreds of flies exercising on a small desktop but fruit flies can be annoying in a lab just as they can in your kitchen to begin with their small and it's very difficult to dissect a fruit fly in case you're wondering and although we share many of the same genes genetic networks were separated from them by hundreds of millions of years of evolution. So it's hard to make assumptions about ourselves based on what we find in these little insects because there are substantial biological differences between us. Merritt said there are certainly questions that are better asked and larger or evolutionary more closely related species like rats and mice a similarly. There are questions now. For example changes in genes through evolution. That are better asked and organisms. That are even smaller can be kept in even larger numbers and with even shorter life. Spans like bacteria or fungi but we can't blame scientists for the proliferation of fruit flies in the world. They would have been there regardless. Merritt explained Drosophila. Melanogaster is a cosmopolitan species. Meaning it's found essentially almost anywhere. We find humans. A fruit fly has pretty simple needs in order to prosper and multiply and those needs are usually met in our homes a moderate temperatures and a source of fresh produce. That's on the overripe side. This is why fruit flies live high on the hug and places like dumpsters compost tapes and Kitchens Merritt said a one interesting thing is we seem to see more flies inside in the early fall. I think that's from flies. That have been happily breeding and multiplying outside all summer. Moving into the warmer inside spaces as the weather cools. The good news is the fruit.

"Welcome back. Now, if you're new to this on Molyneaux life, you may not have realized yet that every episode ends with an odds and ends ending of the show very often times. This spot of the podcast doesn't have anything to do necessarily with the overall topic for the podcast, but I use it as an opportunity to share little tidbits that I think are interesting that have been a point of conversation in the this millennial live podcast Facebook group, they may be topics that I don't simply feel I can build an entire episode around. But they're always something that I think will be of interest to you, or at the very least is something that's happening in my life and today's segment of odds and ends is really just a follow up from last Wednesday's Wednesday rewind which was the protein powder episode. If you've listened to that episode, you know at the very beginning. I teased a blog post that went up on this lineal life blog all about how I created my own high fiber protein powder. I have received tons of questions as a result of that blog post. It looks like many of you all like me are interested in the how and the why. So what I wanted to do was come here and give you all a little bit of a preview into that post. If you haven't read it, and then answer some of the questions that I've been getting about it. So essentially as share in that post I have been on the hunt for years for the perfect protein powder in the protein powder episode dodger Chris Moore gave tons of good recommendations for good quality protein powders that are on the market. I have a few that I've been using. And I like, but as you've heard me talk about especially in the prebiotics and probiotics episode. And if you follow me on social media, you know, that this topic is one that I'm interested in. And that's the topic of fiber fiber is something that I'm super bashing it about if you ever want to know how truly nutrition minded I am. And if I'm truly a registered dietitian, the fact that I qualify fiber. As one of my primary interest should give you a clue, but I am because fiber does so many things I want bore you with too much nutrition information. But at the end of the day fiber helps keep you feeling fuller longer fiber helps reduce cholesterol fiber helps make sure.

"Our interns here at TI and she sat down with Molyneaux to get us. An update. So when you were interviewed for TEFA, what were you talking about about my dad and Mika ration- and most about my dad? And your anxiety. Molyneaux was ten when she talked with us on her episode. And at that time there were a lot of links between her anxiety and her father her dad is an undocumented immigrant, and he had recently been picked up by immigration and customs enforcement, and that sudden disappearance and the uncertainty of his future of his ability to be home with their family really took a toll on Melena. She worried about him the whole time he was gone, and he did come home. But there are still a lot of steps he needed to go through to be able to stay legally. How is your dad now good? He's going to the immigration process. But he's so what does it mean for him to be going through them immigration process? Like what's happening like is governor soon since Mexico, and he's gonna hopefully get his papers there. Molyneux's dad has a work permit now, which is more than what he had then he's going to be going back to Mexico to complete some paperwork and spend some time outside of the US. So that he can be considered for a green card. It's still an uncertain path. But having a path at all has helped Molyneaux feel less anxiety about his future..

"I don't think there's any question about that. So one more here before we go our Molyneaux is killing the tuna industry. So according to this story millennials are not buying canned tuna so star Kist and basically Bumblebee are not necessarily thriving like they used to. Now, there have been stories that millennials have killed American cheese, you know, the craft singles and that kind of stuff because they're buying the boozy cheese. Basically arm Elenio is the root of all evil, basically. Because that's what it seems like every time I read a story everyday. Well, to be honest. I'm actually a millennial. I'm under thirty five years. I don't believe I should be factored into that category. It's a wide range. I feel like by the way, I'm being tongue in cheek about millennials being the root of all evil, obviously. But go ahead. Yes. Now, you're backtracking ain't now them in the same room. You know? But okay. So I read I think in that article. Does it say it's because they don't buy can openers. Correct. All right. Well, I mean like. A lot of soup these these days has sort of like the polarize anyways. So like, usually if I buy buy a can opener when I'm in distress. Oh my gosh. My chick peas don't I can't open them up. All god. I should go. Get this can open tuna. I'm not a fan of the canned tuna. I have like canned tuna in my house right now. They haven't touching a year. But you have it open it up especially now after this year. There's no reason to eat this canned tuna if I'm a millennial, and I'm using all my parent's money, and I'm not buying houses. And I'm spending it on everything I'm going he tuna. Yeah. Mostly shimi little tuna steak not going Cantu. Now, the tune to be honest. This is a real crowd of the tuna industry. You guys need to step up your game. All right fair enough. I'm with you. I mean, I don't like canned tuna. I've never once in my life. How about that NAT interested? There are a lot of people that are canned tuna people. But you know, what I think your time might be over. That's what's trending coming up next. I didn't get a chance to get to this segment 'cause we were doing trending. But there is. An update on Kawhi Leonard that we got from an audience member that a girl here JSP is not gonna lonely you about that tees in a second. But you might love it if you're from LA, but first here's a holiday shopping tip. When in doubt, go with beer..

"We're back Monday mumbling number one for September on the topic of consent. I'm here with the Madam. And we're talking about specifically, we're coming back to talk about types of concert or areas of consent areas of concern. I think the really big thing that we hear nowadays is consensus all about sex, and that has a lot to do with that November two thousand seventeen hashtag me too movement, and that's an amazing movement. And it sheds some very much needed light into physical and sexual abuse. But I think it's also clouded the fact that there's a heck of a lot more to consent than just sex. Yes. I mean, this the sexual aspect of it is is incredibly important. It's been so poorly neglected were so long. And when you start to start to learn about these concepts, it seems like most of them should be self evident that because they've lied other areas. It's really about respect. It's really about politeness. I, I would agree with that. Absolutely. But I think one. Of the things that the may two movement has sort of started shedding light in. We've done a poor job educating just from youth up so that you know months ago we had a somebody on who's a social worker in geriatric world. Right? And she said, she's been heading fascinating and somewhat awkward conversations with her elderly clients and retirement homes who have never heard of the concept of safe sex or consent because it just wasn't part of their world and that unfortunately, that still perpetuates today in the u. Although not as much the millennials we talk, we talk later this month to leeann staus who are millennials, who do nothing, but we're, you know, teach and educate on Molyneaux and sex education consent, and they're pretty amazing. But we still, I mean, I would argue that it's still not being taught nearly enough will in..

"For losing a lot. And what. You're suggesting is that by having different things accomplished different parts of what you need. Your portfolio was a whole ends up being more stable than if you put all your eggs in, one basket that's right and that's a neat way, of thinking about it. That I hadn't fully processed previously in some sense what we're doing. With marriage these days is we've, got a heavily stock loaded portfolio and that means that when the market is up we make huge gains but. That's a lot of eggs to put in that one basket and when. The market goes down we're, going to get hit pretty hard and to some degree that that's also a reasonable metaphor for the Celtics Expressive marriage where we look to one person to fulfil. So many of our emotional and psychological needs the payoff can be huge but there's a lot of, risk now for people to actually consider diversifying their, portfolio romantically and emotionally. Presumably this also creates stresses on what we think of his marriage. So if people are looking outside, the marriage for emotional support or other needs some people are going to say well are you really married anymore I think this is a valid question and this is a, complexity that comes up when you think about how an institution like marriage changes over time I suspect that if somebody transported from. Seventeen fifty two today them, at look around and say whoa that that doesn't look like marriage I don't even really get what. You guys are doing or better yet if we transported back to. Seventeen fifty and looked at what people were expecting and how little they were, looking for personal fulfilment from the, marriage, we would be be wilder So one of the more controversial ideas that I play with in, the book is when I'm talking. About ways, that we, can ask less of the marriage by the way when I am doing. That I'm talking about how can, we strengthen the marriage by asking less of it, one of the places that I consider is in, the romantic or sexual domain, so is it reasonable for some. People to consider some type of consensual, non monogamy now this is not cheating that's. The whole idea of consensual non monogamy this is an understanding that. We don't need to have complete monogamy all the time and you can negotiate and alternative in, fact, among Molyneaux this is becoming an. Increasingly common way of thinking about the ideal relationship so this is an ideal option.
