"Hey everyone chat cemetery is back. I'm your host. Diana chapman and today i am joined by katie schaefer to discuss the movie adaptation of nine thousand nine hundred twenty two which came out in twenty seventeen. Twenty seventeen was a very very busy. Stephen king year and this was a netflix original. Also we're going to be diving into the details here if you haven't watched it yet. Go check it out on netflix. And come back to this. But katie how are you doing today. Great great i actually just finished watching this a little while ago and i have read the short story so i am ready to talk about. This really really depressing one. Yeah this has such a small cast to. And here's the thing. Thomas jane stars as wilfred who is you know the main character in this and i often forget he was in dream catcher. Mostly because i forget there's a dream catcher movie all the time probably should from what i've heard about it and he's in the midst. That is one. I really enjoyed but yes one thing i noticed in this and tell me if i have completely lost my mind here but it felt like he either decided to do this or was told to do this by a director to talk as if his job wired shut yeah. I couldn't tell if that obviously if it's a directorial decision or his You know thomas. Jane is one of those actors. Who can i kind of. Think of him as nicholas cage or john cusack without quite as much wild variations in his acting. But they're still ah he gets cast in a lot of b. movies which i wouldn't necessarily qualify this as that but when it's needed he can really really pull off a totally different character than you've seen in something else and he does that and this and that's kind of what it felt like in how After he made true grit jeff bridges kind of affected that verbal mannerism in all of his movies. Yeah which is a very game. It's like he doesn't have any teeth or something which she definitely does. But that's what it felt like. It felt like an actor choice. Director would definitely have had to go along with it and it did feel accurate to someone i. I didn't grow up around farms. But i am from the midwest and have met my fair share of longtime farmers and. It's not unusual for them to have that kind of bummbly thing going on. So i feel like they had overdubbed a lot of this movie though because of it because i was hearing words and i was like your mouth like not moving like mouth normally does when you talk and you could literally hear him talking in. You could see that. His teeth clenched shut at times. And honestly this is probably like my biggest complaint from the movie because it did make him very hard to understand like i had to put the subtitles on because he would be talking to henry. And i was just like what are you saying. He does use a really heavy mid accent. So that's also part of it was. I've grown up in the around. The mid western accent in parts of minnesota is real heavy so but i also. I was subtitles subtitles for this because it is really intense. I think it works for the character. It really is a especially because his voice is narrating so much of this. And it's such a distinctive voice. I think it works. But yes it's definitely sir circuit. You speak up sir. Maybe open your mouth when you speak. Yeah and you really don't have a ton of characters in this movie you have him as wilfred you have molly parker as let who i recognized from house of cards you have dylan schmid. Playing henry caitlyn bernard playing shannon and neal mcdonough playing his neighbor. Harlan who. I think aside from thomas jane probably the most recognizable face in this. Yes yep he is. He's on he's like second on imdb which is always ranked by how big you are. Yeah so even though he's not in it a whole lot you instantly are like. Oh yes this guy. He's here you know and you kind of can tell right away. What kind of character. He's going to play as harlan especially for those of us who have read the novella which is collected in full dark. No stars yeah. I think it is it is i remember 'cause i had by the book to read it. Yeah so this was a pretty faithful adaptation. Stephen king really loves shoving people down wells. He does wells are dangerous and stephen king books. If one comes up someone's going down at this is like the reverse of delors clayborn. Almost you know. Yeah yeah instead of wife planning to kill husband husband plans to kill wife. Yes for much much less valid reasons and they both fall down. Well yes we understand that sympathize. Why deloris her are probably the best choice in this. It's like sir. No please please stop doing what you're doing like no justification for this. They both claimed to have done it for their children. But the difference with one thousand nine hundred eighty two is that wilford polls henry into it and makes henry take part in this whereas dolores claiborne. She's like i am going to take care of this. And no one is going to know exactly. And she's much better planner than wilford. Yeah he's not the brightest and you see how everything goes downhill so quickly after this you know to dive into the story. Basically his wife comes into some land from her father which would then result in coming into some money as well because she wants to sell the land he does not want her to sell the land. I'm not one hundred percent. Sure why. I don't know if the movie ever really makes that clear. I think the novella does a better job of that but here. It's like the people who want to buy it. he just really hates. he's like farrington cannot have it. Yeah it's because they'll ruin the water because they'll dump all of their waste into the stream because that's what people did then and the stream would be. He is house is downstream from the pig factory. And so he won't have good water anymore. Which will ruin his farm. Yeah and because stephen king loves to make his connections we get the hemming home mention. You know so. That is a place that anyone who has read the stand will be familiar with a and obviously this takes place a little bit before the stand fifty years or so. You know so story wise..

"Our film critic Justin Chang has reviews of two new movies, You can watch it Home. The thriller promising young Woman starring Carey Mulligan can be found on various on demand platforms. And the drama pieces of a woman starring Vanessa Kirby is on Netflix. Here's Jeff Turns review. If you didn't know what they were about, you'd be forgiven for confusing the striking new movies promising young woman and pieces of a woman. They do have similarities that go beyond their titles. Each is an intense but uneven film about the lingering effects of trauma and tragedy. And each one centers on an American woman played by an English actor doing her strongest work in some time. The devious revenge thriller Promising young woman. The actor is Carrie Mulligan, and we first see her character. Cassie nearly passed out drunk in a nightclub. Nice seeming young man offers to take her home, but instead brings her back to his place. Just as he starts to undress her, Cassie suddenly snaps to attention fully awake and fully sober. There's an ominous cut to black. We never find out what happens to the young man or the many others like him. This is what Cassie does almost every night, offering herself up as bait and turning the tables on would be rapists. In her mind. She's making the world a safer place for women. One predator at a time. Her days are uneventful by comparison. At 30. She works in a coffee shop and still lives at home with her parents. Years ago, she was studying to be a doctor, but dropped out after something terrible happened to her best friend and classmate, Nina. In one scene, she meets with the dean of her old medical school and revisits those awful events. Daisy. That's me. Dean Walker. Please sit. My assistance is that you are interested in resuming that school. That's right. May I ask what prompted your desire to get back to your studies? I guess. I couldn't stop thinking about my time here. Yeah, that's an extraordinary place. It's an unusual request. Yes, but I left under unusual circumstances. I left because of what happened to Nina. Mm. Lena Fischer. You don't remember her. Maybe you remember Alexander Monro? Oh, yes. Alexander Monroe. He actually just came back and gave a talk here. Oh, he's a He's a really nice guy, but he's smart. Are you friend of Hills? No. So you don't remember the accusations made against Al Monroe. I don't He took a girl. Beneficial. When you don't remember. Back to his room where he had sex with her repeatedly and in front of his friends while she was too drunk to have any idea what was going on. She was covered in bruises. The next day, handprints, I guess you could say Wasn't reported. Yes. You know. Nina spoke to You. Promising young woman is the first feature written and directed by the English filmmaker Emerald Fennel who served as show runner on the second season of killing Eve. She gives the movie a subversively candy colored surface. Watching. It is like biting into a super sweet cupcake with a surprisingly bitter aftertaste. Initially, it suggests a vigilante movie for the meat to era as Cassie tries to settle the score with everyone like that Dean who turned a blind eye to Nina's pain. But then it turns into a disquieting Lee charming romantic comedy as Cassie, who has trained herself to see every nice guy is a potential threat unexpectedly falls for a nice guy. Played by the comedian and filmmaker Bo Burnham. These wild tonal shifts seemed to echo Kasi's own identity crisis, the trusting innocents she used to be and the self destructive Avenger. She's become. As it barrels toward ending that strives to be tragic, darkly funny and queasily nihilistic all at once promising young woman starts to feel at odds with itself. As if it were trying to make you cackle and weep at the same time. That it works at all is a credit to Mulligan. Skillful, shape shifting performance. She gives this audacious but not fully realized movie an emotional coherence it wouldn't have had otherwise. Vanessa Kirby does something similar in pieces of woman she's ultimately more convincing than the movie itself. In this grim English language drama from the Hungarian director Cornell Mandrake. So, and the screenwriter Kata Weber. Kirby plays a Boston woman named Martha who's about to have a child with her partner, Sean, played by child above To have planned on a home birth, which takes place in a brilliantly choreographed and excruciatingly 10th sequence that plays out in real time for almost 25 minutes. I've never seen anything quite like the scene in which Martha endures contraction after contraction, retching and groaning in pain, while Shawn and the midwife played by a terrific Molly Parker. Rush about trying to help. But their efforts end in tragedy and the baby doesn't survive. The story unfolds over the next eight months. Martha's mother, played by an astonishing Ellen Burstyn demands justice, urging them to sue the midwife. While Martha retreats into herself, Sean descends noisily into grief and rage. At one point, he becomes frighteningly aggressive in the hard to watch sex scene that couldn't help but remind me of the recent abuse allegations. Brought against law above by his former girlfriend. It's not the first time the actor has given a performance that seems to spring in part from his own personal demons. Pieces of a woman doesn't entirely work. It has its share of falsely contrived moments and heavy handed symbolism. Kirby's quiet, implosive performance is breathtaking in its subtlety. You can see in Martha Ah, quality that also defined Kirby's young Princess Margaret on the crown, a steely refusal to conform to others expectations. Martha recoils when loved ones try to comfort her. She's reluctant to pursue the lawsuit. Her grief exists beyond the reach of compensation or consolation. You don't always know what she's thinking from moment to moment, but you believe her completely. Justin Chang is a film critic. For the Times. He reviewed the new films promising young woman and pieces of a woman. Tomorrow show we speak with Director Paul Greengrass. His new film News of the World, starring Tom Hanks is a Western set in poor, small Texas towns and settlements shortly after the Civil war. It's a time of racism, division, anger and epidemics. Green grasses. Other films include three Jason Bourne Movies. United Flight 93 Captain Phillips, which also starred Hanks. I hope you can join this.

"Um, And I think it's a bit on Amazon Prime. Didn't you say that Netflix picks it up, too? But no, no, I said quick. Didn't pick it up. It took. It took the distributor almost a year. Teofilo and anybody that would would show it because they were so I think they were just so afraid of the how the Saudi government would react. Yeah, probably. And then and then the trump government, too. Don't you know Trump is in this too, and he's just course he is. He's just a jerk and everything coming in, and even some worse. Jared and bin Salman were such good friends. Oh, yeah, yeah, they that that's that's gone into slightly, but, uh, yeah, It's uh It's zah great documentary. It's one of the best of the year. If it's actually it probably would have gone on my top 10 if I had seen it earlier, which is which is which is another reason why top 10 lists are so silly really meaningless. Really. They are. They're they're just lift. Now, only one way. And then how do you compare? You know? How do you compare? Like? I don't know. Sound of music to the dissident. I mean, you can You know what? There's no comparison? Of course. But you know what? Yeah, of course. Thank you, Paul. But the thing is, I just, you know, I um uh you know, I I I I lost my train of thought. I totally lost my train of thought because I interrupted, you know, that's okay. I'll think about it. You know, as much as my grandmother used to say to me when I would do that, she would say, Well, it must have been Why, if you focus on and I really I would challenge your ad takes. What? How on God's green Earth? Did you conclude that anybody say that That's so funny? Yeah, she's to say what must have been alive, said Okay, right? Whatever, Gramma. OK, so that's a that's a definite Let's see it. That's an Amazon prime, which means you have to pay for it. Unfortunately, I can't believe first they make you pay for Amazon Prime and then they make you pay for the movies. Well, you know if you can wait like a few weeks what usually after they get some initial, you know bucks for it, then they usually just becomes a part of your subscription, So people want to wait for a couple weeks, but it's also a good movie. It's a good cause. Really. Really? It's a good cause to contribute people. Yeah, Yeah, absolutely. You pick one now, Mimi Little hobbit pieces of a woman to go to Netflix. Speaking of dismemberment from dismemberment to pieces. Oh, you're good. It took me. It took me like about five seconds to get that piece Is this from Male dismemberment two pieces of a woman. Yeah, Okay. And this? This is another one of those woman movies that we've been talking about. There was I'm your woman member that promising young woman anyway. This is a very interesting drumming and hits Netflix today and I'll tell you why. It's interesting for one. It's one of the most unusual portrait of Unexpressed repressed grief that I have ever seen in the cinema. And I'll explain that. What makes it doubly interesting is how it puts the viewer right in the forefront of the characters own grief by putting you the viewer. Actually, through the traumatic experience of the main characters in real time on screen. In other words, the movie begin. The movie actually begins with this extended sequence in real time involving childbirth, and that's all I really want to say in terms of plot because a lot of this has to be discovered is this movie goes along, but it's a harrowing and intense sequence. And as I mentioned, it's done, and it's shown in real time so because the audience is put through the mill, the six Periods were right there in the room with this couple and midwife, the couple's play by Shyla buff and Vanessa Kirby and the midwife has played by Molly Parker, all of whom are really excellent. This movie. We can then emotionally relate that much more and sympathize and empathize that much more with the emotional aftermath and anguish of this event and how these characters including the mother, Of the woman giving childbirth just brilliantly played by Ellen burst, and I mean she's so always so good. She gets better. She ages anyway, but way get to empathize with them in their processing of this experience. So this is a movie about a family dealing with grief and inconsolable loss and how it affects them after the fact in their marriage and their professional lives and their friendships, and it is just it's powerful. It's based on a play that the screenwriter Kata Weber Adapted for the screen, and the opening is very strong stuff. But if you stick with the film and you brave your way through that sequence, you'll be rewarded with an impressive and and memorable, very memorable drama. I keep thinking about it. I saw it weeks ago on it leaves you thinking as well because of the issues that it brings up and emotionally rewarded as well. It's called pieces of a woman. Okay, But here's the thing about that is we're really upset this week. It's been a hard hard wheat him. I don't know if you were listening earlier pen and I got a big fight on there anyway. Yeah, fight all the time. Well, you know, it's funny when you sent me the email and you said we really need to be. You know, we need an uplift this week. I looked at the movies that I saw him. I thought none of these really are uplifting. If anything, they're you know, they're kind of depressed. Well, no, I actually didn't find any of them Depressing just but most of them were pretty hard hitting. And yet there's this meeting is good. And normally, you know, I'm good with that. But I'll tell you what I'm gonna do. We're gonna take a break. Comeback. Apollinaire gonna put our heads together and not fight and we are going to think of a really good movie that can be uplifting. That's going to make people happy, and you do the same thing to him. Okay. All right. All right. See, that's the hard It's e Give assignments that are easy to accomplish. Yeah, All right. "To stay at home. I wanted the baby to decide when she wanted to come. My daughter came into this world for the time that she did, and I can't bring her back 67% of these cases. We really find a satisfactory explanation. Certain things medically, we just don't have answers for Very sorry for your loss. Okay, Jacqueline. So I assume she loses her child during childbirth. And and that's what starts The movie. Yeah, pieces of the woman stars Vanessa Kirby. She's a high powered first time Mom, and she's married to Shiloh buff. You know, he's a construction workers, so she's definitely the bread, one of the family and they're having their first child and they lose it in this really harrowing opening scene that is very difficult to watch, but has some incredible acting by everyone involved and The rest of the film is sort of watching the Nesta Kirby as she tries to piece together her life after this huge emotional moment, where she lost her, her child, and it talks about relationships expectations. It has an incredible performance, also by Ellen Burstyn as her very narcissistic and manipulative and toxic mother. But, yeah, it is absolutely incredible movie and it has a performance that you'll definitely be thinking about after you leave it. Him. You know, the first half an hour or so, like Jacqueline was saying is this unbroken shot of Shiloh buff and Vanessa Kirby, their characters getting ready to have the baby at home? It kind of happens unexpectedly. They have not their midwife, a sort of a replacement. Emergency midwife come over, played by Molly Parker in the first half an hour is just a sequence of the entire process of them trying to have the baby and what goes tragically wrong. It is really hard to watch. It's incredibly powerful infecting, and the rest of the movie is almost kind of Like the aftermath of this horrific thing that we've all gone through with Vanessa Kirby's character and how She tries to sort of cope with the loss of her child. And so it's almost two movies and won the first half An hour is so affecting everything feel slightly anticlimactic afterwards, But I think that what Vanessa Kirby does incredibly well in the film. She gives the sense of somebody who refuses to grieve on other people's timetables. What she does His show how this individual is going through a very unique process, and neither her mother nor her husband is going to force her to behave day sort of particular way. And so it makes the performance more sort of complicated, more interesting. It's a little uneven as the film goes along, but Vanessa Kirby's performance is so strong that it kind of Papers over some of the weaker spots in the second half of the film, All right, next up documentary. It's called The Reason I jump, and it follows five young people with autism Spectrum disorder, and here's a clip from the trailer. Can.

"So we can. Hello. Testing one to talk about us. They want to Hello? What's going on today? And people will be watching jeopardy. One thing, But yeah, Today's the final day. For Alex Trebek episodes of Jeopardy Now, because of all of the breaking news, they went on yesterday Wednesday and Thursdays, episodes of Jeopardy featuring Alex Trebek were preempted. So what they're going to do over there at the Channel seven. While I You know, I don't usually encourage you to watch other TV stations. You get special dispensation for today. There's plenty of audience for everybody that I guess so they're what they're going to do is run Wednesday's episode. From 1 to 1 30. Then Thursday's episode will run from 1 30 until two and then the very final Alex Trebek episode will run in its regular time slot. At 3 30 today, that's going to seem like a regular episode they you know, what they've done is do a special tribute after the credits at the end of the show, so stay with the show. You know if you're gonna watch it Stay with the show until past the credits. And then there's gonna be a special tribute to Alex Trebek on what will be his final episode since he died last October of pancreatic cancer after Atlanta long and courageous battle that he went through. All right. So before we get to the 30 news, tell us what to watch this weekend besides jeopardy. Well, you know in, you know, I put this together before Everything blew up in Washington the other day. I should have only put comedy scene here. Three Stooges shits Creek. Uh, you know, uh, you know, you named the comedy That's what I should have put in. I've got a couple of those But as it turns out, For this weekend. The movie that I'm giving my highest rating to a Dean's list. A is an incredibly sad movie. It is called pieces of a woman. That is about one of the most horrible things that you could possibly imagine the death of a newborn child during a home birth. This movie stars Vanessa Kirby and Shailagh buff. And the great Ellen Burstyn and Molly Parker. I predict they will all be nominated for Academy Awards. They're amazing. In this very, very difficult movie tow watch. It's very sad, but it's so good and so compelling. You cannot take your eyes off of this movie that the 1st 25 minutes of the movie. And in some ways reminded me of saving Private Ryan. It is it is. It's the labor and birthing scene in this couple's home in their bedroom. And it's nonstop. It's you know, they don't have any cuts in this. It's very visceral and, uh, very, very emotional. Tow. Watch it. The rest of the movie is how the mother, the father, the grandmother, the midwife how the death of this little infant affected everyone. So I mean, even though it Zaveri sad The content is put in context and makes a lot of sense. It really kind of draws it all together, but I'm warning you, it's it's very real. When they show you everything and it's It's very, very difficult to watch. But I still gave it a Dean's list A because it's a great movie. That's the bottom line. For me. It's on Netflix. There is this sort of revenge thriller called Fatale that stars Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy. They are two people that have a one night stand in Las Vegas. He returns home to his wife and his home. The home is broken into a home invader is involved in the detective who shows up on the scene to investigate this home invasion is the woman from the one night stand. On this woman is not going away easily. It reminded me a lot of fatal attraction. I give that one A dean's list B minus. So let me just get to some. You know, some happy things that you watch this weekend to try to make you feel a little better on Netflix. There. I'm sorry on the peacock Network. Now, formally on Netflix is the office. All of the episodes of the office have been moved to this new Peacock platform seasons. 12, or freeze seasons three through nine. Are on peacocks paid premium tears. Everyone's talking about corporate Chi Season three. That's on Netflix. Called the history of swear words where each week and the six part series Nicolas Cage digs into the anatomy. The origin of one particular swear word. So if that's you know, George Carlin's turning in his grave right now, after his seven words that you could never use on TV. This Syria's uses them all in spades.
