So well you wouldn't have had a lot of people to warn you would have had a potential situation to warn about even if it was just a few people of like a major chemical spill or a gas leak or something like that so to me the idea that it was some sort of warning system it does make says well but at the same time. How did you progress into a professional aviation career? yes. So The big thing was me and you he he was a pilot but just for So it was a big thing in the family that for me to even think about making money with aviation I didn't really have a good model for that. So establishing that model really came down to two guys. One was my uncle Berle who was a mechanic and the other was a guy named Dave Grohl who restored A spearman's and t six is just down the road from the airport where I learned to ride my bicycle. Melville was going to get the first flight you know Pete or whatever but it was gonna be some flights before customers were in the right seat in the back seat and that Steve was gonna you know some get bored and they were going to put someone there and you would have a chance to be an astronaut supersonic all reversible controls rocket engine like everything flying the world's greatest Hondo. So, creating a path to make yourself competitive for that in this environment like mojave work for spaceship one before they should wonder but voyageur Mohammed was desolate. There was nobody really after spatial won the place got like flooded with talent. So. There's all these guys that are buying for my spot. I want that spot, right so I go to work as hard as I can all day but the other day there's slow there's time left the end of the day. Then you drop another million to two million to make him a test pilot that's what you're competing with as a civilian, right so high, you get that experience. Airport Full - No Parking Please
"So the airlines had a whole new kind of problem these days, and and this is an interesting shots of it. Breaks. My heart to. But. David! What's this? You should quickly discern what. It's turned into. A parking lot on par with. Mahabe in a couple of other places in the South West. Uses a aircraft storage. Yeah, yes, of course. Mojave is for airplanes that are that are extensively retired. These are just airplanes that are parked and. Waiting to go back into service, it kind of begs the question of where I don't know it makes me think. that. There are a lot more airplanes in the under normal times. There's a lot more airplanes in the sky than we ever realized and now that we now that we can't store them in flight. You know we've got to put them because you would think that there would be no got park someplace overnight, but apparently not they you know. They always had to park someplace overnight. As my point well, they always had to park someplace overnight, but they add gauge to do that at. And Hey be even overnight. There's still some of them in operation right right right. Oh and I see what you're saying. Chip that that even though things are down, they have to keep gates open. They can't use the gates as parking places right because they are. You know not as much, but they are using the gates. Okay, I'd forgotten about that. You're right all right so Yeah, we see this. We're seeing these kinds of images all over the place with the airliners. Active airline aircraft. Act I don't know how to put this exactly. What's the right term? But the point is are not retired aircraft there just. Aren't needed right now. Short term storage. Yeah, yeah, and how did you get? A work is getting longer and longer. It depends I mean. I saw somewhere where I don't know which carrier, maybe as just a general rule for for those types of airplanes but They had. mechanics early technicians periodically going out empowering things up, and and maybe even starting the engine cycling, the hydraulic system things like that, and just on a on a regular basis calling at flyable storage or something. That's certainly you know one way to do it another way to do. It would be to just seal the sucker up. Leave it there. Until, however, if Rao, our law and you have a laundry list of things to then go through. when you want to take it out of storage, well certainly gonNA. Have a laundry list one way or the other it. It's an interesting question. I wonder if they already had procedures for such a thing or if they're trying to design to write these procedures I think quick answers, yes. But I think they also had to write some of that and again, depending on the aircraft and depending on the carrier. have to rewrite some of their procedures to consider this longer longer term flyable storage. Yeah the and the long term storage slightly So many years see yeah, they they've got a big long list of what they do. I mean they mask over all the air inlets? All the heat exchangers. Tape over the window put protection over the window so. transparencies don't suffer from sandblasting when the wind goes whipping through the airport and pick up debris. Pickle the engines of Put tight covers on the enlighten exhaust into the rice. Block up those heat exchangers. It it's. It's a substantial undertaking to mothball and airplane for a long period of time. Probably. Probably not anywhere near that because. They're subject to getting back into fleet as soon as the traffic supports it. And that's the reason they're. They're the. A Close Call
"In August. Two Thousand Fifteen Steve Hill. Who had been John? Sharps crew chief and I went to restore the NEMESIS ANNEX T to flying condition. Sharps Reno Racer had been stored in a hangar. At the Mojave California airport that had been damaged holding the annexed t captive until the hangar doors. Were repaired. I was to relocate the annexed t to the Moriarty New Mexico Airport so that sharp could set some world speed records before retiring the aircraft to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Sharpen his wife Patricia. Designed and built the t around his six foot four frame and the rudder. Pedals were not adjustable even with cushions and bolsters. I was barely able to reach the rudder pedals. I was unable to perform a magneto check as the next. He slowly crept forward. During the run-up this of course was unacceptable. So I taxi back and inform sharp and the crew of my predicament hill. I returned to Moriarty to contemplate plan. B The annex t was subsequently flown to Moriarty where rudder pedal extensions were designed and installed on April twenty-seventh. Twenty seventeen I finally had a chance to fly the annex t since the winds were forecast to increase hill and I met at hills hanger early to get a leg up on the day and give me a chance to see how sharp's racer flew. The annex t has no forward visibility when being taxied so a lipstick camera was located on the right main landing gear in conjunction with a small video screen and the cockpit so the pilot could see ahead hill. Followed me out to runway two six to both assist and observe my flight. As soon as I applied power I was able to raise the tail on directional control was never an issue. I remained on the ground. Perhaps a bit longer than needed which may have been a function of the elevator. Trim position on lift off. The tee seemed very well behaved. I climbed out to the South West in order to get a better feel for how it behaved before returning to land. Although the aircraft was not unruly the air certainly was so I decided to cut the flight short and return to terra. Firma and aircraft incident or accident is almost never just one thing. It is a series of connected dots that when added up can lead to an untenable situation or worse the first dot manifested itself. Unbeknownst to me as I enter the downwind leg it had only been a few days before that I had flown the glider clubs Piper pointy tow plane. When doing so I would fly a close tight traffic pattern in hindsight. I should have flown a pattern commensurate with the speeds. I would be flying the Reno. Racer that is a one hundred fifty miles per hour on final and somewhat faster on downwind and base geared down to in the green and I started working to slow the next T- because my proximity to the final approach was far too close. I banked steeper as I watched myself fly through. Final DOT number two. I must have added a touch of bottom rudder dot number three at that point mortality Hubbard a watchful bird of prey. And the next thing I knew the next departed in a snapple. I would like to claim. It was superior airmanship skill and reflexes. That kept me from dying that day but I know better. My Guardian Angel was watching over me and only by the grace of God that I make the control inputs. That allowed me to recover at about two hundred feet or so Steve Hill was privy to all of the above and this is what he observed. The aircraft disappeared from my view and hearing to the West. After a few minutes I heard the aircraft approaching from the West and her bills radio call of left down wind for runway. Two six with gear. The aircraft appeared to me to be at a normal altitude. But maybe a little too close to the runway by this time the winds on the ground had picked up and we're gusting a little bit. The winds were mostly aligned with the runway but may have had a southern component. My perception was such that. I almost called bill on the radio. Remind Him to maintain one hundred and fifty miles per hour pattern speed. But I did not. I watched the aircraft perform a left turn from down wind base and the bank angle seemed a little steep to me. The aircraft continued at northerly heading with left-wing down at less than five hundred feet. Ag L. suddenly it appeared to snapple. All the way around and recover right I was looking into the morning sun and did not have an ideal view but I believe that the aircraft continued in a roll to the left. The maneuver happened extremely quickly. Literally in the blink of an eye. It happened so quickly that I was at that point. Not sure of what to make of it. All only that I was in a descending attitude on northbound heading and then if I did not initiate a pull up I would be making ground contact with ample speed in hand about one hundred and seventy or so. I started climbing westbound. Turn for an upwind leg while I contemplated my course of action. I reentered the down wind with substantially more distance from the runway. This time the pattern reflected the speed at which I was flying. The Annex T and the turn from base to final was made at a comfortable bank angle and speed once properly stabilized. The T flu like it was on rails. There was a bit of a southwind so I touched down left wing low as I wield the little racer onto the ground. Shortly after securing the aircraft we were in contact with sharp who was gracious enough to forgive me my transgressions and the fact that almost destroyed his wonderful creation. Sharp offer a five page explanation. Absolving me of blame but I knew better. The fault was entirely mine. The takeaways from this incident are many but mostly the recognition of how easily one can allow the deck to be against oneself. It's important to reflect on the various types of risks identifiable acceptable unacceptable and most important on identified remembering that uncertainty is always there hovering over the horizon awaiting the arrival of the unsuspecting pilot. Who has allowed his or her situation awareness to go by the wayside and for identified risk to enter the equation. I've found the episode humbling. A stark reminder of what a lack of attention to detail can lead to reality had returned with soul searing clarity. I had violated a number of tenants. The Truth You May Not Know
"Brady meters. We'll come back so you know. Recently I was in Palm Springs Springs. It's a trip that I make quite often with the family. My mother-in-law move down there. So you know we're back and forth quite a lot and the trick is mostly flown at seven thousand five hundred weather permitting and then you kind of pop up to nine thousand five hundred or so. Just where the hatch P. mountains sort of spill off into the Mojave Desert and Palm Springs is surrounded by mountains. So I really. I was thinking about leaning on the way down you know how we teach leaning. How Eileen just watching? When I'm flying with the family in a rental aircraft where I'm paying by the hour by the way and and getting reimbursed for fuel but I really started thinking about it and I ran a couple of polls one on twitter instagram? where I just ask people if they were ever taught that you lenient? In below seventy five percent power. I was shocked to see that on instagram. The majority hadn't heard that and on twitter. It was split fifty fifty so I felt like so you know I get asked the question often about should eileen or do I have to lean or so it seems that people might be confused about Wendelin while I was down in Palm Springs. I just grabbed a camera. It's so quiet down. There in the desert is beautiful and I started working through some of these thoughts about how I think we should think about in the fight training world how we should think about Lee leaning. What's the goal? Where do we want the people end up when they get their private certificate Because you know what happens now is you just not taught a lot and ends up being the private owners that have to figure it out themselves and and they know quite a lot after a while. So I'm trying to fix that problem for student pilots and I think I forgot to mention it but everything you're about to hear does not apply to turbocharged or Turbo Abo- normalized aircraft. It's for normally aspirated engines. Only anyhow. Here's exactly what I said. Well almost exactly what I said when I grab that camera in Palm Springs and if you want to see for some reason my talking head walking around the golf course saying this Video is up on Patriots so anyway. Here's some thoughts on leaving. You know a lot of pilots really don't understand leaning and the flight training environment is not conducive to learning good leaning habits and so what we tend tend to do. I think is sort of ignore it and it's not good for really two reasons one is you're not operating you're typically operating at three thousand feet or lower maybe the three thousand five hundred so you know it's not like nine thousand five hundred the leaning you should be done but it's there's no huge consequence if you fail to do it And also we're doing a lot of maneuver based training so often going to full power settings so we start with a mixture full rich just in anticipation of going full power. I'm so we kinda tend to ignore it and what I find. Is You know with my students and with pilots. I fly with even after. They've been certificates. Did they'll look at me when they get to cruise altitude three thousand five hundred kind of timidly touched a red handle and look at me and see my reaction and say eventually. Do we have to lean or do you want me to lean so you know and it's like one of my least favorite questions because it just reminds me how much work there is to do there. So it's a topic that I'm really taking on not just in this podcast also in the latest public youtube video and this podcast right so You know basic principles of leaning. Ideally ideally you have a perfect fuel air mixture To introduce into the cylinders so that the Pistons can compress it seeing inefficient burns you can produce power with a lot of without a lot out of excess soot or carbon or you know explosions or anything like that you get a nice burn and as you go up in the atmosphere the air becomes less and less dance so you need less and less fuel all these are the that's the basics right and then when everyone can tell me about that but you know maybe the devils in the details but it's maybe it's about win like Wendy Lean so if you go oh to the Cessna manual there talking a lot about altitudes three thousand feet five thousand feet and I find that this is what's common if I ask pilots when you lean they'll say well you know usually above three thousand or sometimes I'll say four thousand on but if you go straight to the lycoming manual the manufacturer of the engine and you read it they'll tell you it's appropriate to lean the aircraft anytime you're operating below seventy five percent power so that's the one main point that I want to convey to people is that the whole reason you have those altitudes three thousand feet the five thousand feet because you don't have percent power gauge so they're giving you a convenient device nice to know when you're at an altitude above which you can't produce seventy five percent power but the main thing according to lycoming is that you're leaning the engine when you're operating below seventy five percent power so I think it's important for pilots to understand this. I think this conversation will serve us a lot. Better than the conversation about altitude For example if we're in cruise flight and you're asking me. Do we have to lean. Well are we doing slow flight. Are we gonNA power back and fly in at minimum controllable air speed for the next thirty minutes or are we gonNA cruise along as fast as we possibly can with attack needle just off the red line because in case a I'd want you to lean in case be I wouldn't rate what if we're in a full power climb up to seven thousand five hundred just like I was on the way down here to palm springs. I'll start leaning leaning as I pass through five thousand because that's the altitude at which I'm no longer producing seventy five percent power. I think it's I think it's wise to think about leaning this way because for the reasons I just mentioned also it's a good reminder that your engine is just a big air pump and also once you start to understand what percent power you're operating. Adding Fuel Burns our constant forgiven percent power output so just seems to be a better way like a more direct way of approaching the topic of leaning meaning rather than talking about altitude. I'm in that really just leaves. Then you know how specifically do you lean. And that part's pretty simple you. The Best Power Leans best economy liens and manufacturers recommended which is sometimes one of the first two that we just described best power is the lean setting that gives you the absolute absolutely most amount of power most of flying fixed pitch prop in training. So this is the lean you should learn how to master you take off you up to cruise altitude. Make sure your pitches constant because if you're pitches and constant you're going to see like if you start pitching up you're gonNA see a drop in RPM when it had nothing to do with leaning it was just because you pitched the airplane up so divide your attention get comfortable pulling out until you feel a slight drop in RPM and then bring it back until you get the most power. You've you can get in practice. That like a little micro skill. I would practice practice moving my hand in and I'll just finding that point bringing it back finding that point get comfortable. Divide your attention. Hold your pitch. pull the mixture back until the power starts to drive and bring it back into good at that right. That's easy. That's the best power lead in a fixed pitch prop airplane. If you're flying the one eighty two I was fine. You don't try that and the governor's GonNa keep the prop at the same RPM so you have to have another way and that other way is exhaust gas temperature. That's how we figure out the mixture because it is the temperature of the gas coming out of the cylinder and we are going to learn how to read that temperature and figure out what it means for us. A best power lean would be peak exhaust gas temperature and then come in fifty or in this case like home and saying one hundred degrees rich hundred degrees rich cool on the rich side of that peak exhaust gas temperature and there's your best power Now best economy is the second kind the least amount of gas you can burn so you have to have an easy t h for this. You can't do attack on or so in the Cessnas that we were talking about or the Piper Warriors those airplanes that have fixed pitch prob- you're just going to use those old analog needle GT's and it takes time right. It takes those E. G. T. needles. Move Slow so you're going to start to lean lean lean and wait for that needle come up and lean and lean and lean away fat needle come eventually it comes up so you mark the peak with that little yellow indicator on cross country flights. That's when I would practice this with students but best power leaned for normal flying once you start doing cross countries. You can start playing at that. Exhaust gas asked temperature.

"We're good. We weren't good. That night Hazelwood, and I slept outside info brewery in the Mojave desert below freezing temperatures, and we because the the unit that we got attached to his actually tearing down and moving to another location because they've gotten busted. And so we couldn't sleep on a cot off the ground because you weren't allowed to be behind a moving vehicle in case. Someone started humvee up in the middle of the night and started driving. And so all the humvees were taken. There was there was no room inside the vehicle so Hazelwood had to sleep outside on a medal in the back of a medal truck, a whole new meaning the phrase imbedding. Cuddle with me though. Rather we were daytime spouses for seven years when I did TV fulltime with him. And he wouldn't he was so pissed at me. He would not talk to me. And he we're we're literally laying down no sleeping bags on a metal truck bed and all the humvees are going and there's Chinooks flying over and there's these lights flashing. I'm like well here. We are here. We are. I'm really feeling it. So of course, I've take all of my three outfits that I brought out of my and I've put every single layer. I can't and I am quote, unquote, tough, Texas girl, but when it comes to temperature, I get I get angry. If it's if I'm too cold, and yeah, so sure enough it was a fun night. And he's wouldn't even talk to me, and I was singing and just trying to stay warm. And of course, that's a little bit of whiskey in and probably gonna gain for that. And. Does like Hazelwood you want some whiskey, and he's like, I said don't talk to me. And so, yeah, he's really it was a lonely night the next morning. Of course, we didn't have to wake up 'cause you know, we didn't sleep couldn't feel our feet or anything the next morning. Brought us some coffee, and then the shouldn't the helicopter came and picked us up. And we got embedded that they they actually had a nice striker going with heat on it the next night for us. So we started talking again, we got the documentary done. No, no. When we won the EMMY he they announced our name, and he came over. And he said, I forgive you said. Yeah, you. Deal. I mean you had to suffer to go through a little bit. It makes the story. You know, it makes the story. Of course, everyone thought it was all areas, you know, we were the stupid reporters, you know. But we had a lot of other really great stories happen, you my relationship with you. You've introduced me to a lot of great people over the years, and I've been blessed and fortunate to be able to hang out with a lot of those folks, get known become friends with them serve on various boards and stuff like that with with various folks who support active duty military veterans, and you and I had this conversation a while back because I said, I said, I called you on the phone, and I said, what do you think about such and such organization this and this and this and you kind of educated me on how many nonprofit organizations supposedly? Support the military and people get misled a lot don't they? I just think it's important. I think at the end of the day there are a lot of there. There are thousands of incredible individuals out there doing the right thing. And I think everybody has a good heart at the end of the day. We want to support him in a women uniform. We want to support their families. We wanna support all things surrounding military life..

"Now, one of you is an anxious to talk about Mojave stability, I'm guessing that's John. But you do have an ancient MAC though. I mean, I'm not talking about that. When I was talking about the five Camac that is always the latest operating since my Tamale. Anyway, I didn't want to pass judgment too soon because the point zero was always weird and give it a while. But now, I'm ready to declare that Mojave is less stable on all the systems that run on which is a my MAC, and my work laptop than was high Sierra, and it's not like there is some terrible problem that happens all the time. But there's just enough problems. And I say stability, I mean, like stability stability as in my computer doesn't work anymore stability, not like an app crashes, or does it weird thing or there's a bug both my work computer in my home, computer exhibit problems that it's like game over you must restart the computer with power. Kind of thing. It's not a hard freeze or says everything. So the laptop one is kernel panics, which I hadn't high Sierra to it's because it's a laptop and laptops, do that. And I have to plug it into plugged into a USB hub thing with an external, monitor whatever. And I've never still never been able to determine is this the problem of the hub devices at the problem of the laptop is it a software problem. I don't know who or what to blame. All I know is that I get slightly more kernel panics in Mojave than it did with high Sierra, I got them with high Sierra too. I guess. Anymore? The only upside to Mojave on the laptop is that I can for the most part plug and unplug it with the laptop lid close. I get kernel panics at different times. Usually like when it's Br plugging my laptop for the first time during the day when it's been in my laptop bag the whole night. Sometimes it had a kernel panic in the night. Sometimes I think packs when I plug in thing for the first time, whether it's open or close any that's the laptop and at home this my five Camac is on all the time. It's not, you know, there's no real weird software on it. I still a crash playing because I thought it might be to blame for all this stuff because running on a memory, whatever. But don't that wasn't thing. I got on my five Camac, which is on all the time. As the computer in the morning or the first time, I use it for the day, and I will make it up, and I will enter a password or whatever time unlock it. And on the screen in front of me. I will see a bunch of dialogues com. Either asking for like, an I cloud password or a key chain unlock password. And I'll see a bunch of them stacked on top of each other very often than menu bar will be gone. And I have learned from experience that there's nothing you can do this situation, you can enter whatever password is asking for and it will just re prompt you or you'll reveal the dollar boxer, and you can't sell his dog boxes and new ones will spawn as fast as you can hold down the escapee your computer spatially, did it thinks it's not logged into it thinks it's not logged into cloud anymore. You can't switch to a different account usually can't restart the way usually restart as open a terminal which brings back the menu bar, and I repeat from the command line, which I think counts as clean restart, then I suppose, but sometimes the power button is required. Because you can't even get the terminal to launch because command space doesn't work or the. Doc is unresponsive. I don't know what it's problem is what happens during the night that that it suddenly thinks it's keychain locked in isn't logged into on cloud on the best thing is when it comes back up. Everything is fine. But then you get a dialogue all your devices saying you've just signed into such computer with your new apple, and do you know that thing? And so it doesn't it doesn't happen every day or every week or even every month..

"So we got a couple of new amps with a MAC OS Mojave which is a, it's been awhile since we've gotten new apps on the MAC. And the funny thing here the big reveal is that these are Iowa's apps that we got on the MAC. So what do we think about that? We talked about this a little bit after WBZ where apple is putting in the system where you can take an eyeless application and turn it into a native MAC project Marsa hand. Well, I don't think Apple's over said that publicly, but that's, I guess, background what they've been calling it. But the the idea of this is there's this big influx of apps showing up on MAC OS that are like these web based outs. Basically, you run the app and it opens a web, a web browser that looks like an app that's running and up from the web. You know, slack, I believe uses that and some of the other services. So so a lot of apple, MAC fans have been saying, well, I don't want apple to be make it easier for people to just take. And I turn your back up, then they're not gonna make custom mccafe's. In the overall quality of MAC apps will go down. But I, I would say first of all, that's probably not as big a worry as you think it is because the overall quality is going down anyway. If people are making web portal apps, these will be better than that. And if we can get more apps on the MAC, I think that's a good thing with your position on that. Katy mostly good. I think yes, more apps on the MAC argued thing. I think if it's easy for developers to port their app over to the MAC, it will be better options for MAC owners. We'll have more apps on MAC owners. I just think we need to be careful to make sure that that we're getting quality apps over on the MAC because just because you can port your Iowa's afterward, the MAC doesn't necessarily mean you should and doesn't necessarily mean that it will be a good port over to the MAC. And so I think it has to be carefully done. I don't want to just see an influx of bad apps over on the MAC just because you can. I, I agree with that. I also think on the flip side of that, the. A big power apps, you know, logic and Omni focus and Microsoft, or they're not gonna just push the button and try and convert their apps to an Iowa up from, you know, from Iowa, I just don't see that happening. So I think the absolute we do need special love and attention on the MAC, those holes continue to stay for the foreseeable future. But anyways, so apple has this program they now that they're doing next year is going to be the year. We'll be talking about that because that's one that's going to happen, and we'll see how it all shakes out, but just kind of as a proof of concept apple to the news, the stocks, the home and the voice medalists app from Iowa, put him on the MAC. I can tell you my favorite of those three is the home app. I love the home app on my MAC. Have you been using that? I think is probably mine as well..

"I think is more useful. I think for watching my kids. They all talk to each other FaceTime all the time. You know, it's very common. I think for for younger folk, that's a way they communicate more than older folk. And if they could have three or four people in the in the FaceTime room, I think they'd like it even more. So this is a feature that's important in. I hope it. You know, it's not like the airplay where it just kinda lingers for year maybe disappears. I, I suspect this one will ship they. They've already announced the beta for Iowa's twelve twelve point. One is out now and I think that they are probably not gonna I, I would guess that we're going to get a beta for Mojave the first point one up date very shortly after releases. I would hope that that's the big thing with the point. One release that they get this figured out for the multiparty FaceTime calls. I think it tests fall so it could be I, I guess, fall as soon that we'll saying usually that's the point one release though, isn't it? One is if there's a big show stopper that maybe point two, but either way. Hopefully not too far off. I'd like to tell community to talk about an sponsor, and that's our friends over at one password. It's made by group of people that are obsessive about giving you safe and secure passwords and having a way to have your cake and eat it too, to use those big passwords. But at the same time, have a convenience while you use the internet and it just got more convenient with the latest release of one password for IOS. They're taking advantage of this new feature that that apple put in Iowa's twelve. It's -application where you can go and fill a password in an application. You have the password save for your favorite websites. But what if you have an app that needs a password filled in, we'll apple made it possible for third party applications to provide the password and username for you. And I, this is a personal experience. I was sitting behind the one pass. Guys, a group of them while we were watching the WWF Keno. I wasn't in the big room. I was in the one of the one of the little party rooms and there were guys there and you could just see them when they saw the announcement that they could add this feature. They like sit up in their chairs. They're so ready for this. So they did it and it came out with the release of Iowa's twelve. So now if you've got one password and you save your passwords, there you go into your favorite app on your iphone, your ipad, you gotta film your password, it's taken care for you. That's just one thing that went past does. There's so much more if you.

"Take a look at the whole entire land of the jitsu scan, snap family. And when you decide to grab one, let them know that the folks over at MAC power users sent you. We didn't just get stacks. We've got some other finder improvements with the MAC OS Mojave. One of them is the replacement of cover flow byu? I always never really understood cover flow view in the finder. Did you ever use that feature before? Not really cover flow was something that that worked. I think for a while and tins and I think Steve Jobs liked it so much, and I tend to that. He decided to bring to the finder as well, but it's been replaced with something that I think is a mix. A lot more sense. Which is gallery view. It's it's much better it. It gives you a set of thumbnails of the documents in a folder with a large size image of the currently selected image down the right side of the screen. It gives you easily identifiable and adjustable. Meta data. Like when I, I can't a whole bunch of stuff into my action folder all the time. And this new view has become my go-to place for going through that folder because I can just arrow key through each one which is something you could have done with cover fo- before, but it wasn't as convenient as it is. Now you can adjust the name so your, hey, SEL roles can kick in. You can apply flags air. I'm sorry tags, not flags, and you can even do additional features that got a markup. You know, the that API I showed up on Iowa's where you can like sign a document or do basic edits on a on a PDF document or some automation. So it's it's a much more. Power Usery feature than it ever was before. I think the ability to make quick actions particularly and to markup by apple has pretty much put Mark of everywhere, but the ability to make quick actions and you can do that whether in your gallery view or not is huge. I mean, it's going to allow you to quickly rotate things or crop things without actually going all in and opening the app, and you can put your own in there like, you know, apples on this HEI see photo format like I was, I was moving images from my iphone and ipad. I'm working on finishing up the focused field guide, and I was sending all these images to my downloads folder, and they show up as HEI c. which when you drag that into screen flow has no idea what the heck that is. It can't process the image. So I made an automated script. It's real simple. It just takes an image. It saves it as peg, whatever you do, and I saved that as a service and automated. And then when I. Was looking through this this view that tool auto magically appears as an available tool now in my in my finder, so I don't even have to. I can just go through and make all those those adjustments right in the finder it. It's really nice if you start doing automation stuff. I think quick quick actions is that what they're formerly calm, quick action using the right name for the that's in the dialogue. They call them quick action. So yes, I think they're huge. I think they're going to save me a ton of time you. You can do a lot of things you can crop. You can Mark something up. You can rotate them. You can create a PDF. You can trim video. You can even, like you said, create your own. So they're, they can't be super complex, but they are super, they are customizable. I think that the quick actions combined with markup is is going to Sherlock some simple apps. I think sketches probably a prime example when you when you create your own, I think limit is a service. Based automated script is if you make a service base automated script, it's gonna show up in whatever format you get. When you make a service, you have to give it like, what does this work on this?.

"I found that it was hard also when you had multiple windows stacked on top of each other when you were dragging windows around to differentiate the borders of win. One window started in one another window ended. So I was having trouble saying, all right, at my grabbing my web window now are on my grabbing the window behind it. It was just hard to tell. Maybe there just wasn't as much translucent see there wasn't as much depth. I think when you were when you're viewing things in dark mode. So I thought that it it wasn't as user friendly of a system to be able to differentiate between the different apps that you were using. And then the big downside obviously was anytime you were browsing the web, the web is still very light. I think we will see websites start to build in support for dark mode, but I don't think it's going to happen a lot or anytime soon. I saw that there are some themes that can help create dark modes, and there's going to be some CSS scripting done for for dark modes where you can build a dark mode theme for your site and light mode thing for your site, but keep in mind. The max shurer is still pretty small on the sheriff max who we're going to be writing. Mojave is going to be pretty miniscule. Why are people going to voice their time developing for this at this point. Is there a hook that a website can look at to say, this user is on MAC OS Mojave running dark mode. I, I don't know, and maybe we'll hear about that before next week's impute plus, but I would imagine that was possible, and that would be cool if the websites would automatically just the reason. I think people should start thinking about this is I think it's only question of time before this gets to Iowa's and there's a lot of people using IOS. So in fact, I was a little shocked that it landed on MAC before it landed on IOS, but I think that I always at some point is gonna get another like Iowa, seven type redesign, and it's going to have a dark mode. Now, I think the interesting thing about dark motives. If you just wanna use dark mode, you're going to like this. And if you get everything set up the way you want it, you know, you've got your timing out running dark mode and you've got your your setup. You know your, got your screen, your desktop picture. That's another issue. You dark mode with a light desktop picture looks pretty weird. But if you just wanted to say, no, I really like dark month. I want to run it all the time. You're going to be pretty happy with this, but if you wanna switch switch, you know my mind might change. You know, maybe I feel today on the light side, right? But the, you know, there's overhead to switching back and I think I'm going to read a keyboard maestro script for that. Now I think about it. I could probably script all my switching my apps with a keyboard maestro script. Yeah, I to me, it's not even worth using that that bandwidth to do because it's, it's just, you know, it's, it's just sugar coating something, you know, I, I, I don't need it. It's not productive. It's just. With the user interface always is really, I mean, yes and no. I mean, yes, the user interfaces is pretty it is, but it's also functional and to me, dark mode is less functional. But for some other people, it may not be speaking of which you know you mentioned that the desktop background that you use? A lot of us use our own photos as desktop backgrounds. Apple built in some of their own desktop backgrounds specifically for use with dark mode. They've also created this appearance profile called dynamic desktop, which I think will be interesting to see if this is something that that third party developers can can hook into. It's a desktop that will. They've got a couple of scenes that will transition from like a morning noon tonight seen as your your day goes by, which is it's pretty, it's it's cool. I don't know that it's very productive and it may not be applicable. I, I would imagine that a very large percentage of users immediately changed their desktop. I think most computer users that I know even if they're fairly novice, computer users have got a photo of their family or something or something on their desktop, their dog, their kid, their family vacations, something like that..

"And part of that may be because of the machine. This twenty sixteen MAC book pro that I'm running it on. I've, I've never been particularly happy with. I have been running them Ave beta, and I will tell you that since I've been doing that, things have been better, but they have not been solved. David. I know that I've been expressing my frustration with you because I, I've been going through literally months where if I leave my MAC on overnight, there's probably a seventy five percent or better chance that it will not be on when I get up in the morning. Because it something has happened that I come back and it says your because expectedly shut down, but that's great. How often, how often seventy, five percent or better chance? I would tell you is crazy crazy. Yup. I think it's a hard thing at the hardware problem. It could be well happened with Mojave. I think it has happened once with Mojave. Now. I have not been running. The Mojave is long, but it's definitely happened at least once. But that could also be related to something else. I will tell you it is. It definitely appears to be a a thunderbolt related thing. I've also had circumstances where this MAC will not turn on if it's plugged into thunderbolt. And then as soon as I unplug thunderbolt accessories, it will. It will then turn on again. There's definitely wonky nece related to this particular MAC and thunderbolt, which feels kind of hardware related, but the fact that it hasn't happened nearly as frequently since upgraded to Mojave. Could mean that it was software related. I will just tell you that I think apple has been, although this is supposed to be all about under the hood improvements in those types of things. I've been really impressed with the quality control coming out on the MAC. Lately, both from a hardware and the software perspective, that's an acceptable. I mean, just, I mean, it shouldn't happen really. Once I, I had that. I MAC whenever the first written imac was released, I think had that machine like four years, and then I got a new one this year. I cannot recall a single kernel panic with either machine ever or coming to it and saying, it's shutdown while you're away. I don't think that's ever happened to me every time I complained to David about this and text. He just sends me a link with the by dot apple dot com..

"Thing to wake up or whatever but so far so good how about mojave is it what's it status same thing it's a beta so there's some quirky behavior i've had it on both the i mac pro and my mac book pro since ww dc anyone's been fine i've had a couple like sometimes the icons and the talks aren't there they come back they haven't abandoned me a dark mode is is really nice i find that a little bit oppressive all day every day so i like that you can turn you can switch back and forth yeah and apple did a lot like it's not just a dark mode it's like the it has a lot of treatment to make it look seamless when you switch back and forth and it also samples the background image and background windows so that it's not a off cast to compare to what the rest of your environment is like so it's a it's a it's a cosmetic change to be sure but it's a very nice cosmetic change and it's one that a lot of people whether you're you know you're using pro apps you want your content bop or you're reading in bed you don't wanna be hit and head of the pillow all those things it's much better but not only that but i it took it took apple this long to allow us to really choose our own highlight color for like highlighting of buttons so we're instead of having to you have two choices are you you you have both options both slate gray or blue now if you really want if you wanna tangerine highlight color if you want a red highlight color as these are these are colors are when i when i saw the the the developer beta it was like i i quickly wound up with leaving my mac and dark mode but like a sort of like that sort of a burnt tangerine highlight color at it feels like i'm running lennox i feel like a bad as i use purple because i thought andy would appreciate it if you want to roll back from either iowa's twelve or mojave you can't yeah just make backup i you okay let's make sure you do your backup i so back and they do really emphasized by the yes and if you when what happens when the released versions come out do you are you now out of the beta program or it depends like you can lead the certificate that's all a certificate system now so you put a certificate on your computer or your phone and it knows to look for the beta branch instead of the release branch and you can delete that at any time otherwise it will just keep going into the next because they'll be a twelve point one and we'll have a point one betas it'll keep going that way if you want so go to beta dot apple dot.

"I into mojave on that extra ssd the internal drive doesn't show up find her unless i mount and give it a password like it is hidden away but i can still boot from other volumes no problem so i i kinda got the feeling that you have something bigger going on i'm not sure that i would blame file and it's possible that when you turn on somehow it it cooked your keychain or something and now you can't log in but i think you're in you're in a weird spot that you obviously shouldn't have happened so you've had some sort of you so i didn't know about any of this pot right like this this co conversation happen between the two of you like even this petition thing even beginning in the first place so for what it's worth federico i just want you to know that i appreciate the work that you have attempted to do this time to fix the problem that you create i i appreciate it just didn't work so you try try try to harvest he spent money on it you spent time on it i hope that this experience has told you a lesson for next year well genuinely i don't i doubt it because i still i still don't understand even why you did it in the first place like i don't know why you would bother to install mojave it doesn't make sense to me he's a huge mac fan and he just it's it's probably stupid it's stupid but i thought that messages would sink better we'll have really wanted to try dock mode but i can tell you messages thing to you like because when i'm recording shows like for example interviews on apps oris i need to be able to talk to john but message is always out of sync or just texans sylvia in the other room stuff like that but i can tell you now going on the record with stuff next year especially on the watch like i will never ever again put a watch beta on my main watch it's been an incredibly frustrating process in that i cannot do reliable workouts anymore like external hut rate sensors are not working the bolting sensor is worse than than usual like the the bulletin apple watch censor for heart rate was always problematic for me but now it's just been a horrible experience with the like my heart rate it's like one hundred and fifty pm and the sensor says sixty seven or the calorie counting just such working like i'm dying over here apple watch it's not sixty seven bpm it's a that you'd go to the hospital you just got really good yeah yeah you're leading an animal in your heart rate's barely of most people's resting rate so i feel like i will never put a watchos beta on my main watch ever again i should probably be like david smith and like twenty to watch his arms and also i think the same argument applies to the mac i think i learned season that i find the mac on frustrating though is that there is a there is a like there is a way few to do this which is to just put the state like it's not like with the watch stuff if you wanna try out your option is by a new watch or just do it right and it's like so i would understand that more but like you could just externalize society you know taking care of use my amazon affiliate co that's in the show notes beset pretty it's blue and everyone should buy one should we take a break and then actually do follow up yeah that's it because we never got that it was the story about the steering wheel that really hit a love we really really drove off course at that.

"Kina there or in the sessions like well you know we don't want the grade contrast to the wallpaper like no one's ever gonna see like it's fine but it's it's there and i will let the will shine through though right so it's you know it's there so that's a new this is not just they just move out the sliders ever in federal shop released there is some new technology kind of pudding putting these these appearances together now now there is something called accent colors which i genuinely believe is shipping even beta because it's it leads to some very peculiar cultures yes like what is going on with accent color so this is this is a new thing in mac os so you have a parents which is light motor dark mode they used to that used to be blue and graphite so they've reused that name a little bit and then there's the highlight color which is the default is blue and that is what you see like if you're in chrome or safari and you highlight the url that color that is the highlight that's highlight colors you can change that from you know blue to pink to grade orange or whatever there's a bunch of options there that's been there forever what's news accent color so before when you were either in blue or graphite appearance like if you had a drop down the right side of the it'd be blue double arrows and its graphite if you were in the graph i mode which is the one i've used for a long time in mojave you have what is eight accent colors have blue red orange ella green purple pink and graphite and so that changes those colors if you have a drop down you can set the pink or you can set it to orient or you can set it to green and it lets you customize mac os in a way that you have never been able to do since the ten transition like this is more customisation than we've ever seen you know post two thousand one or so but can lead to some really weird combinations like i kind of thought that i would like dark mode with the orange highlight because i like gray and black and orange together but it doesn't look down look great.

"We like to work productivity we improve our productivity watchos five out we're not super excited we don't use apple watch but for people who do you have serious shortcuts on there and you can now view web con content on there and the podcast which is actually great listen so inside of there exactly perfect oh always be always be promoting now this is nice really for me i've never gotten apple watch but i think i probably going to get one soon because i would use it more for fitness i like to run and i'm i'm personally into fitness so things like listening to podcasts and music and things like that i would find it useful in and of course like the fitness features but anyways that aside those are the new things watchos five and those new features apple tv personally we care even less right about this but at least i do have apple tv the old one i've actually yeah i've never even used upul tv in my life sorry to let people down dobie outmost is added onto their support for dolby atmos the other announcement is mac os mojave mojave mojave and that is a lot now yeah anyway in that in between that and i phone ten x ten and mojave mojave mugabe maybe be a lot of my job is pronounced you know i'm a foreigner so don't don't just l anyway dark mon that's that's again i guess that's a devastated feature as well actually because now you can support that.

"Mac os jason can you remind me mojave mojave mojave mahaffey mo jive dock mode i played around moved up mode a little bit on a stephen hackett had a mojave installed on on a drive and try to out and i like it more than i than i thought i would when they were showing up in the demo it just it didn't work for me but i like it more impulsive and i wonder what you about dogg mode i i'm looking forward to seeing it i'm glad that apple finally has has offered at my complain about the dark menu bar was that it felt like they wanted to do dark mode and they just couldn't and so they said well you can make a dark menu bar and i thought that was dumb so now that there's a proper dark mode i'll try it out i actually i like the idea of having my system kick into dark mode at night when my room is presumably darker yeah and and and the bright white windows on my screen are are more prevalent but also there's a question of how you you want apps to support this right like right now i have a bunch of white background black text windows up on my display and if i go into dark mode and none of them adapt that's dumb and that's one of the things is that developers will need to build with the latest k to get dot mode is not gonna to magically apply to old apps presumably because develop is gonna find a minute this text i forgot to use a system color so you're gonna get black ticks on black background how much blacker could it be none yet like we were playing around vi chins in though some apple music promos that you couldn't read the text off which was hilarious because they just basically images in johnson.

"Like maybe be level hollywood films that were supposedly shot mojave desert that was actually a set up for them and then my second question was you know how extensively did you hike that area and those old testament references i was speaking with that behavior in the desert or liar as he was alive or he was playing jazz jazz about something like that oh that's a good question well what i mean by that is is first of all the joshua tree which is the personal totem for me you know it's named after the prophet joshua that's not why it's a totem but i i just happened to be drawn to it it's kind of sort of like this beautiful but freaky radar station that frozen in time and receiving messages and sending out it's sending out receiving and sending out at the same time but to the mormons were when they came west according to the story about the trees naming when when they first saw they thought it was the prophet joshua pointing to the holy land so they named it the joshua tree and thought they were thought they were heading towards salt lake city but and they did it they got there at some point but that wasn't way the tree was pointing hiking the joshua tree and all that that conjures marking the holy land and then just at the desert it's it's a sacred space i mean you have all these miracles of nature happening there that's kind of really when i'm listening to and then these voices coming through you know good evil and and everything in between and it's kind of this alluring melody that plays and and you know just there you know in certain times of the year it's a just a gorgeous place depending on the angle of leiden you know the wins and the constellations and everything the there's an element of the sacred that runs through my book you'll see if you read it through all my work places a character and all of my work and how people move through so joe also asked about how extensively you've hiked the area oh yeah a lot hiked a lot in the desert especially in joshua tree and other parts of the west but i i just one of my favorite places.
