"Whom are close to biden And the binding world sort of you know pointing to like all the reasons. They think their state should be i. There are other arguments for moving away from iowa to vote counting issues. Expose the system itself it's byzantine and feels out of step with the popular vote conception of how we conduct politics in this country. I think of it like you know what. If you put the electoral college system in a blender and then tried to kind of frankenstein the back together right. It is so bizarre and it is You know you have a bunch of people who are in a room and for those who've never been to a caucus and you have different presentative from for each candidate coming in making a pitch and then you start whittling down these groups and you have to have. There's all these rules for getting viability and getting to the next round and so forth but then you can argue everything to death and when you start having these these numbers and wait that really have a ability and that person was at in that group or that group it just became more and more apparent that the electoral system was just not what it used to be and what what people are demanding now which was much more transparency once they it was transparent and people actually saw what was going on. There were fide. They don't want any more in the democratic party in iowa got a lot of blame and they did mishandle a lot of stuff in two thousand twenty but in a way what they were really paying. The price for was a system that had been in place for decades and was being examined in new light and all of a sudden stuff that used to seem charming. Seemed a little nuts you know. They're turning stuff in with handwriting and things scratched out and well. All of that always happened. It's just now you're actually seeing it and people didn't like it once they actually. I mean not nationally. Anyway and i think that's that that's part of it. You know we. We want a clear cut system where we can count votes. It's it's you know one person one vote a system that is uniform across states. Everyone knows how it works. If there is a recount there's a recount. Of course the bad part of that is what we started with at the beginning. Which is are you taking all that intimacy away again the end of the system if and when it happens would be would be a huge change. It it would be. I mean i think about it for for for you and i it would be Change the only system we've ever really known for most of our lives. And that is a system with iowa and new hampshire at the front of the line in iowa playing the most prominent role into alter that really shakes the foundations of the political world. We're confronting systemic racism across our institutions and our electoral process is is being going to be examined Just as our police departments are in our criminal justice system as a whole so to have this process in place. I think is more and more politicians are just and the democratic national committee. There's just going to be so much pressure to move it away from this and you know because of all of those reasons why are we. Having a bunch of white people decide the trajectory of our nation. Who's in the white house. Essentially and it's a powerful argument. I think we are in a moment in the country where we're ready for some change and i say that i say that i love iowa. Let's be clear nine casters. We're not trying to dunk too hard on iowa. right now. we're political journalists. We will always be attached to rituals. Even if they're weird. I have a special place in my heart for it. I know the people there. I spent a ton of time. They're they're wonderful people. They take the process very seriously if you go to any diner. The person serving your food subscribes to the economist. And we'll start talking to you. Where are you from and knows every single candidate who's running. Not just that who. Their campaign manager is how much they have. I mean it's it's too that that level so they do take seriously but the country's changing and changing fast actually. Now that i think about i would maybe actually was kind of an accurate predictor for the rest of twenty twenty. Not so much for who would be in the white house but for exposing weaknesses in the political system. Because when you think about it. I wha being first in the nation they were. They were the first to have a calamitous election. And that's what we ended up seeing over and over again and maybe there was a little bit of iowa iowa telling the rest of the world. Hey twenty twenty is going to be really rough and being just see that in in all the local primaries and then what was to come in the general election but we saw it across our institutions including in our police departments And you know protests and counter protests and all the ugliness. That was under lying underneath all of that from george floyd on and yeah so in some ways. Iowa's definitely first-in-the-nation..

"Love it. The threw me there. And those arguments have held great sway for a long time combined with the unified bipartisan. First principles of the the iowa political parties and the new hampshire political parties that which is that whatever else we may Disagree on we are a unified front for keeping our states in this privileged position in the presidential nominating process. And yet now. We're looking at the aftermath of an election where. The president of the united states finished fourth in iowa. Fifth in new hampshire and then obviously not only went on to win his party's nomination but one won the election. And that's put both of these states under enormous pressure but probably most especially iowa because of the the circumstances of the caucus with the technical difficulties in the vote counting problems a year ago. Yeah although i don't think that's the biggest problem confronting them right now. I mean candidates sometime. We'll bomb in iowa and that's just the way it is the biggest threat to iowa and this is true of new hampshire. Really is the question of demographics. Every person in the two thousand twenty field wanted to be barack obama in that sense. They thought you know if i can make me. I'm set. They will pick me up from the crowd. And that's why iowa so important particularly in two thousand twenty one you did have a very crowded field. And lots of huge names pete. Buddha judge and bernie sanders and warren and biden. And amy klobuchar. They were all looking for the same thing which was iowa. Give me legitimacy legitimacy aspect. There's the kind of winnowing the field aspect. There's the elevation. There's an intimacy you talked about. And yet at the same time it kind of feels. It feels like to to some degree. This is like the instagram version of the iakobs. It's like look how look how great look at all these great things it does and then you know like people post about how great their lives are especially this year on instagram. And then there's the reality then what's like the messy reality appeal right and that is what i would argue. Was what the app the faulty app that contributed to faulty accounting and issues reporting the results..

"Briefly tell me about the role that the caucus traditionally plays well. The iowa caucuses mythic in some ways and has been ever since It gave a springboard to jimmy. Carter from georgia. I hope and being president please. Kind of winnowing. Role in the same way. That new hampshire does it's not always guaranteed to produce the winner but it is a unique institution that people pay really close attention to all the candidates are most of the candidates. At least a caucuses allowed this intimacy with all these candidates that you don't get anywhere else in the country. The caucus system itself really kind of guarantees that that intimacy in that conversation happens everywhere else. You're watching these ads on television right. The candidates are all people who are on the stage. And you're far away but niwa put it this way. What if you went to california nobody would ever meet. Voters would be all radio and tv ads or internet ads. Candidates would never actually meet real people but they're forced to do that in a small state like iowa and the same is true in new hampshire but in iowa. They're forced to walk down streets and go to coffee shops and small towns and hit all these civic gatherings and i think that is something that is really great for our system. I think it's great for our leaders to be forced to interact in that kind of way to win in a caucus. You need to win people over so all these big names are going into having dinner with families are and they're all competing with each other like oh. They had dinner with my whole family. Oh ho she only had elizabeth. Warren only had coffee with me and my husband. And it's insane the stories. They're telling you. I mean they're you know some of them have had you remember the huge sprawling field once upon a time in two thousand twenty every single. Some major democrats in iowa had all of these people in their living rooms it rewards passion and organization and i think that we want to have an element of that in our politics. We want to have long shot candidates or candidates who don't appear on the radar who somehow build up a enormous reserve of goodwill at the grassroots level. We want candidates like that to to compete the biggest role that they probably played in the modern era in politics. Is barack obama in other something happening in iowa. My voice talk until iowans are very proud of rack obama. We picked him. No one knew who he was. He wasn't a big deal while he was he was not the political star yet that he later became he was on the rise. But you know. Hillary clinton was presumably the front running back and they chose obama and that sort of set set the trajectory of the reysen and twenty eight. I saw this amazing number this year. Scott from a study that said that during the two thousand eight prisoners pain in two months before the two thousand caucuses. Roughly two-thirds of iowa voters had personally met at least one candidate. That's amazing two thirds of the state had met a candidate. And i don't think that would have happened otherwise unless they had the caucuses unless iowa had it's kind of Privileged status there. If you're in california and again you know. No disrespect intended to california. Or even you know my home state. The you know the the great commonwealth of pennsylvania scott which i know. You're you wish very much the you were born in even in the state like that you don't get to be presidential candidates. Free rarely sorry. I couldn't resist. I.

"Eight say. Espn remember college. Football playoff semi finals and final are on espn espn radio coverage of the rose bowl and sugar bowl on espn radio. Begin to friday at three pm eastern before you do that field. I am so disappointed with every single person. Part of the lebatardshow here today shannon. I'm disappointed with you stash. You don't have your video up on zoom. But i'm disappointed with you bubba. All disappointed but especially you field. The fact none of y'all have watched head lasso yet. I'm the only person here on this fine radio program. Who has i'm you just if you do. Not if i find out that you did not at least consume one episode by friday before the the semifinals. I will be highly upset with you. Game changer. Here's the thing. Peter is that so the show debuted on august fourteenth of twenty twenty. Some of us have been in the middle of an nfl season since then and not every single one of us on this show. Rise in grinds and watch every single play. Like i'm a dan orlovsky clone. You know i'm too busy putting in the work here to find time for anything other than the nfl. There's my excuse. Okay i listen. I'm grind seven days. We got two kids. I i still find a way to just tell you it will make you wake up and be a better person. I'm saying now. I am excited though about the semifinals. In the in the final i think alabama notre dame. That's going to end up being a blow out. we'll get into. Who has more pressure on them coming up. But i find this interesting. Trevor lawrence going to be the number one. Pick of the draft right in now. The question is not necessarily where he's going to go jacksonville. It's who's going to coach them in. Who's going to lead them. How about this from cartel. John's former ohio state quarterback and twenty fifty national champion. He joined keyshawn. J. will zubin in talked about. Hey is it going to be urban meyer. And if so what would. He need to compete. I just had dinner with coach. Martin this past friday and of course. It's kinda came up about back. Coaching things like that. And i'm not saying you say yes not saying no but i think for him has assessment. Nfl and i think he would agree with common. That make you have to have more. Roll like bill. O'brien what kind of the head coach and gm so he can get his guys in there so you can you know do all along as coming at gm is on a pretty much the same way when it comes to the The other team in direction because coach mars as a big control guy in a d love to have his blueprint and his footprint. No almost any and everything and does what the program and organization so i think that right organization is willing to kinda give the keys to the guy who who haven't had experienced nfl level. I'm thinking can be successful. So how does that play into your thoughts. Urban meyer taken over the. Jags filled that work so the first half of that when cartel was suggesting he needs to be like bill. O'brien i'm thinking to myself. Why why would a team you to urban meyer at example to us right right right well i understand though the cartel was not suggesting that result but more the idea that he had complete autonomy um basically do whatever he wanted the second part of it which was at. He needs to work with somebody who is in concert with urban. Meyer's ways that. I'm thinking to myself peter like yeah no kidding. Like that's exactly what does work in the nfl right. It doesn't matter how good the coaches is better. How good the. Gm is if they are not working on the same wavelength. It's not going to be built to last. So the reality for urban meyer. That's not the reality for every other candidate some but not all of them is that there are going to be teams were. Urban meyer has the leverage over them right. Like i don't know That jacksonville may you can make the case. That the jaguars need urban meyer. More than urban. Meyer need to jaguars you guys made millions. And millions of dollars cemented. His legacy is one of the greatest program. Builders and great college football coaches ever. Does he need to go to the jaguars. No you know why. Because a year from now he'll be right there on the radar again for nfl. Coaching jobs if he desires there other head coaching candidates who may only be offered head coaching job. Once or twice ever and may not be able to say no to that. So i'm on board with urban meyer as a head. Coaching candidate very much. So i just would love to see some checks and balances in the form of a general manager like that's not such an right feel but it's not as field. Yates peterberg hero. The dan lebatardshow field. It's not as if that he's coming in and go listen. I'm drafting this guy. I'm working the cap. I'm doing all of this. All it is is that right now. There's a vacancy for the gm spot jacksonville right. I'm sorry doug marrone if you're listening to us today probably going to be ousted this urban. Meyer wants that job right. I'm a firm believer. Actually that that urban meyer would looked at texas had crystal konta. The athletic director gave tom her the boot but again texas ended up winning last night in the bowl. And yet they're back right but with that being said if you're urban meyer you got number one draft pick and trevor lawrence. So there's no issues there you handpick whoever gm you want to work in cohorts with your in a small media market no state income tax. If you don't take this job. I don't ever want to hear about ever mayer his name being linked to the nfl again. Because there's won't be a better blueprint than this. Yeah i mean for for urban. It is a very savory opportunity. Right i mean i don't i'm not todd. Mcshay am not mel kiper but if you look at look back at the last twenty years of draft prospects. You're probably looking at somewhere between the first two third best draft prospect. We have seen during that time. It is a crown jewel. Job so pressure on the jags. To land or urban meyer. At this point. Who's got the most pressure on them. Is it dabo. Is it notre. Dame is it alabama coming up. Hit us up on twitter at peterborough at field..

New York City to Close Public Schools Again as Virus Cases Rise
"Students in the nation's largest school district will once again be learning from home Today. New York City has closed its schools because the Corona virus has gotten so bad there again. On your Kamenetz from the NPR Ed team is in New York and joins us now. Good morning, Onya High. Rachel. How did this happen? How did New York get to this point? Well, it's been a saga you know. At the opening of schools was delayed twice this fall, There were acrimonious debates between parents, the union educators. The city, the state and most recently, it was hours after sort of the initial announcement that parents actually learned that they wouldn't have any way to send their Children the next day. Huh? So how? How are officials making this decision? What criteria are they basing it on? So Mayor Bill de Blasio had previously set this threshold of 3% positivity rates on tests taken across the city. That's that's very different from what we're seeing inside the schools where there were a few cases and we've been edging closer to that 3% standard over this past weekend. Now, Rachel 3% positivity is a pretty low level. Some critics have called it arbitrary. The mayor has called it, you know, conservative and stringent. How does this decision in New York computer what's happening happening in other places around the country? I mean, I think what we've been seeing obviously, cases air rising around the country and even in places where they'd opened up. Sometimes they have to close down again because there's so many staff in quarantine, but generally across the country, cities are much more likely to either stay remote or go remote. You know, l a USD in Chicago have stayed remote. This whole time. Detroit and Denver just went remote. So to Des Moines, set of Toledo, Oklahoma City and s. So it's it's really It's a tough time for in person school right now. So what are you learning on you about the science disclosing schools actually make a difference in curbing the spread. This is a really tricky point. You know? Most scientists at this point will tell you that schools, especially elementary schools, have not been found to be significant sources of spread. As a reported recently, we're seeing in many places in Europe. They've been dealing with the second wave by closing bars, restaurants, sometimes lots of businesses yet keeping schools open. But there's very few or if any places in the United States that are actually putting the kids first in that way, so Lots of critics who point out here in New York City. Indoor dining is still open at 25% capacity and their many local officials calling on the mayor and the governor to prioritize school's over bars or restaurants. What are parents telling you? I mean, especially parents who can't tell a work right? Who can't stay home with their kids? Right? So, you know, Rachel, this is a big, diverse district, Its majority low income and we should note on Lee about 300,000 of the Million Plus, students have been going to school in person, so there's a lot of variations. The mayor did mention yesterday that the city has space in its learning Bridges program, which is basically free child care, especially for essential workers. About 30,000 spots right now. We also heard yesterday and this is kind of upsetting when it comes to equity. There are about 60,000 students in the city who still don't have devices for learning at home. They're gonna be getting paper packets, and that's eight months in schools closed, but I think you know, I talked to Daniella example. He started a petition to keep schools open. She's a working mother of two and she feels like the city's taking parents like her for granted. I think a lot of it is frankly, you're a parent and you love your Children, so you always figure it out. But there's just no recognition of the insurmountable burden that parents have been under for the last seven or eight months. She added. A specially working moms NPR's Anya Kamenetz. Thank you. Thanks.

Aircraft Delivery Founder Steve Giordano (Co-Founder and Managing Director of Jet Test & Transport)
"But I started jet test. Kind of as a hobby while I was at allegiant early on even when I was based in Vegas. The idea and what does it do? Well so I first and foremost at the time jet test didn't exist. I just blind the line flying de Moines and flying to Bellingham Washington and Fargo and might not you know in the MD eighty and I was flying with this is what I was photos the beginning I was flying with the captain and he said you know we hit it off and he said Hey this weekend I'm burying a D. C. Nine thirty over to Belgrade Serbia and I could use I could use an F. O. and I was like Yeah County, and I've got a passport and I get paid. was. Very. Done for for I L F, C at the time. I don't as they don't remember it could have been. We did a lot for C. we still do for air cap, which is now let's see but I don't remember who the customer was, but we were basically. So he was like a like a freelance. Highlight. For Higher. He just went in and jobs and I had no idea that existed and so it was an opportunity for me someone that just loves to travel I had never really had the experience of flying internationally besides Mexico and Canada and stuff. So of course, I jumped on that opportunity and I I still remember that whole trip like like it happened yesterday because it was my first time flying across the ocean. Sure. It was show. You. How long were you gone from the time started to the time you returned home. I think it was probably done about three or four days. So we got over there, and then of course, we hung out that we hung out for a day. You know nowadays we get well forget it. I, mean cove it makes it impossible to even leave the airport for the most part, but that's another story. But you know at the time. Even, we're so busy we we generally move from trip, but at that point in time, I had never been to Eastern Europe and I had gone wants to Ireland and wants to Germany as you know as a as a team but. Anyway. It was it was awesome. We walked around drink beer and had good food at the restaurants and and it was just it was just such a cool experience that the first thing that I did when I got back with say what's next? When can I do this again? And it turned into, you know I was I was I made myself available and I was ferrying airplanes mostly DC nine, some dash eight, some MD eighties because that was all I was typed on. And I was doing a trip every couple of months and whether it was domestic ferry you know or flying over to Asia. Started kind of doing the same thing as him and. What happened from there is you know I started getting type ratings I just I wanted to do it more and I wanted to make myself available on more more equipment. So the first thing I did was I went out and bought a seven thirty seven type. Crossed when you did it. I think it cost about eight nine thousand bucks. Yeah. It's really almost about the same as it costs today but you know I did it in an old seven, thirty, seven, two, hundred simulator which you can't find nowadays right And then and then I flew right seat on a lot of ferry flights until I got the experience and the confidence to to

Trump's Town Hall On NBC To Overlap With Biden's On ABC
"Town halls tonight with the two presidential candidates. Last night, Joe Biden delivered a brief pretaped remark as part of the Muslims making Change National Honors event. You see what happens when a president fans the flames? Hate crimes on the march more kids bullied in school, the rise of anti Muslim bigotry. This is not who we are. President Trump was in Des Moines, Iowa, where he prays some foreign leaders. One thing I've learned presidents she of China. He's 100% Putin of Russia, 100%. Kim Jang gun, By the way, Whatever happened to that war? We were supposed to be a Kim Jong un of North Korea. 100% thes people is sharp in this barn. ABC news chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl is with us this morning. Good morning. Good morning. This is an unusual situation with with these two competing town halls tonight. We've never seen anything like it. But then again, we've never seen anything like this campaign. You're gonna have both candidates at precisely the same time answering questions from voters on two different networks. Uh, it's it's a strange circumstance. This was supposed to be the second debate. Of course. Donald Trump dropped out of the second debate when the debate commission said it would be virtual do tow the outbreak at the White House. Ah, and you know, we've we've had this on the books and shortly after that, and NBC suddenly surprised everybody. By saying that they were going to do the same thing. But with Donald Trump in exactly the same time what we expect to hear from each of the candidates Well, I expect in terms of Joe Biden to hear him face some questions that he simply haven't answered, Uh, you know, he's a very unusual campaign because of the pandemic. Joe Biden has not taken a lot of questions for questions from actual voters. He hasn't taken really a lot of questions from journalists amazed on on some, but there are a lot of basic things he hasn't answered. I mean, most famously. What? What does he think about? Expanding the Supreme Court. What's his actual position on that? But also where exactly is he on the green New deal? We saw him kind of take two different positions during the last debate. Uh, where, you know, how is he going to work with Republicans? Is he going to put much of a priority and working with Republicans, as suggested in his convention, and in terms of Donald Trump is how does he turn his campaign around? You know, he's He's trailing, he's trailing. I mean, look, he was trailing in the polls four years ago, so we don't really know how this will play out. But there is far more than the polling on the state level this time around, and he does not have a lead in a single one of the top 12 battleground states in the recent polls. How is life changed for

"Welcome to the be I'm Ari Melber and we are tracking some new sides. Trump campaign is worried about losing the Midwest and thus the entire race to Joe Biden trump spending precious time and resources on defense and state carried by wapping ten points. Last Cycle Iowa Biden is closing that gap and putting the state in a dead heat I was one of the thirty nine states Kobe is surging appointed his greeting donald trump's visit many voters their view this campaign homestretch through the prism of covert. And the criticisms not just coming from Joe Biden or the Resistance Iowa leaders, public health experts, independent writers all noting the trump is coming back now for votes after turning his back on the crisis there take the influential Des Moines Register stating that after jeopardizing our live from far. Trump decides to visit Iowa in person. Or take a look at this. You can't pull up trump's I will rally tonight without seeing this massive billboard pointing the way to yes. A super spreader of. Trump is plowing forward on breaking CDC guidelines lying about the risk of Colbert and the timing of vaccine and repeating two thousand sixteen claims in that state and in other key battleground states that from what we're seeing on the ground and our reporting may not play as well. Right now Democrats, say many measurable signs show that some voters are now onto the con- take a local paper in the state of Pennsylvania noting that trump is just recycling is two thousand, sixteen jobs message, which may work less during the current recession while the president blows up these stimulus talks this week. And his key groups like suburban women turn on Donald Trump that's according to internal polling newly obtained by politico or senior citizen's wavering on trump group that he needs for a winning coalition in several of these states, and since we were last on air just last night, roughly three more million ballots are in leading to nearly fifteen million total ballots cast, which again is vital because it may lock in votes at a time when Donald Trump appears down. So. If you follow all this stuff, you could see the facts trump's record are hurting him. But with the second debate canceled this week, not everyone's falling all the details which is important to keep in mind and that's true. We checked even in some key states that the candidates are visiting even for people who do read the paper. Take Florida which so many politicos obsessed over even when the candidates are on the ground I wanNA show, you hear a fairly typical big city paper, the Orlando Sentinel, the twenty, twenty race it's not the very top story or line. It's not top two on the right. You have to squint there and find it. We put it in red for you below the full in the very lower right hand corner, and that's with the nominee Joe Biden on the ground. Elections are one on preference and turnout. Popularity or preference really helps. But turnout commander more. That's how unpopular person like Donald trump managed to eke out a win in the electoral college in the first place even though remember he never pulled very high. He never pulled past fifty percent and he finished with few voters supporting him in our weird. Constitutional System. By right now, thanks from that evidence. We showed you in what we've been showing you throughout the week that they are up. So they're laser on taking that preference and trying to get the turnout with these growing leads states that trump won in two thousand sixteen big leads in some places above the margin of error and the question is, can the Democrats actually turn all those people out? I want to bring in someone who knows all about this polling Guru Cornell Belcher who worked on both Obama campaigns and wanting to taller the national political director for supermajority, which focuses ongoing political opportunities for women good evening to both of you. Cornell when you see the numbers up. What is the vital part for campaigns in October as voting's begun interning turning preference in turn out into victory? I think are a couple of things are really important. The numbers that are structurally different from twice I wanted to make that plex a lot of people still nervous about twenty sixteen. Structurally this is different than twice a couple of ways. One is different than to sixteen. In that in all these polls are driven showing by actually has a majority. And that is critical I. don't care if you're five, six, seven points. If you're below majority crazy things can happen. But in most of these bound states and certainly the national polling, he's now at a majority in Washington Post polling which I which I pay attention to hear because they they have the third party candidate in there as well. He's still at a majority you remember. Hillary was always ahead in the forced to way choice coastal majority but with the third party candidates who. Turned up the instrumental she was never had a majority of that. She got in nationally law with what what we saw with third-party Cornell just to pause on that point you raise because this matters you're pointing out that sometimes the question the voters get on the phone is different than what they're going to see. If they turn out, they get presented with two and it can change the actual science of what we're getting when they're gonNA go in the ballot box and see three or more explain to us exactly what's different now or what you think that there's more optimism for Biden compared to that. There was a protest right and we understood that that that that the third party candidates were repealing. A inaudible segment of the electorate who who, who was my time voted for for Bronco Rock Obama and nowhere is that more crystal clear than the State Wisconsin, what you saw those young people third party forty we also understand that the Russians have had a big play in and try and direct some of those specials and African American voters toward party candidate candidate candidates here. But even with their and candidates right now structurally, Biden has a majority of which is which is good and it's a stable majority. Are This is unusual in that you can't go back in the last two or three decades seeing where a Democrat has held a double digit lead nationally embattled most these battleground states for not one month that two months, three months. But basically, since June so structurally, this is very different and within the numbers is very different because when you look at right now you know among College White Women, the Horse Races Twenty seven, sixty, nine ad from the Washington. Post poll so know. So, you're talking about structurally this lead in and his support is very different than what we saw. Hillary Clinton Sixteen in two thousand sixteen quite frankly I'm gonna Bama and teen got but this is structurally even different than what we saw for Brock Obama. In Twenty, eight, twenty, twelve in two. Thousand eight I'M GONNA bring. You Anita? But. You're saying it diplomatically are you saying you think the number support a bigger margin for buying than what Obama One? Is Is blasphemed don't Tell Brak. Obama but I. Joe By going to beat it by. Wow don't you know it doesn't work when you say don't tell someone, but you're on live TV. That's really you are I mean again, I just want to underscore this. Again, we're following the the numbers and I've tried to show viewers we're GONNA continue report for you. Particularly, the votes cast the voter registration were at fifteen million votes. The election has begun, which is different than a hypothetical poll six months ago so we have an Obama pollster. Saying tonight, he is seeing the elements of the larger victory for Biden and Obama that you own that. Not Me that's really interesting coming from you cornell. Elliott. said it you're not telling you. There's no things what they're. Not. GonNa, let you forget this. I don't see it. But what I do see is absolutely the margins nationally the margins in these battleground states are undeniable but also an organizer. So first and foremost I'm always going to default to this is a turnout game. It is all about the people get showing up. I am absolutely looking at that almost fifteen million votes cast number and have optimism optimism about what we can expect to see as we get closer to the election cycle and I'm also a woman optimistic about women boating and turning out their friends and their. Families to make sure that binding gets over the finish line because what what is interesting here is Bala failures that you mentioned about trump and your opening are like boater boater spill that and voters are living that every single day. So on top of all them enthusiasm for a Biden Harris, they're taking their lived experience in an ongoing pen to make that didn't have to be this way in an economic recession that again didn't have to be this way but are here but we're all here because of trump and his administration's ineptitude.

"Okay I have found recline. Maryalice parks our political director. Our deputy the legal director. What just happened like what's going on? This is utter meltdown. I this was supposed to be the kickoff. This was the big nick. Start with the Democrats Big election year and they are unable to tell us who voted where they voted. Anything about the vote whatsoever the whole system that they set up to actually report these caucus results the most basic tasks. Just find out who voted for whom it broke down. It utterly failed them and they are stuck in a position where the Democratic Democratic Party really can't say anything about what just happened in the kickoff content. What was it like different like a new APP is the same thing they've always done? Why do you say that early? In the night I was not willing to get on board with this storyline because the party was saying they were going to be careful. They told us that they needed to make sure there wasn't bad. Information that caucuses are inherently apparently messy and take forever so when things were slow I kinda bought a lot of that spin that they had told us they wanted to make sure they cross their t's and dotted. There is and that this could take a long time but clearly as the night went on we were talking about something totally different. We don't know that it was the APP that fails but it was supposed to be a tool tool they had created for these precinct captains to be able to quickly report results. There were backup systems in place they definitely had to go to the second and third and fourth backup backup systems because clearly the APP was not helping precinct captains be able to do anything quickly as plant. So what happens. Usually come to you guys. And you're like this person won the Iowa caucus it's it's a big surprise like what. What do you do nobody wanted? Everybody lost for the Democrats go away. You're going to have a bunch of Democratic victory. They'RE GONNA put out their own numbers. They're already doing that. You're seeing from earpiece campaign. You're seeing from Bernie Sanders campaign. They have their own people in the rooms that give them at least partial results. And they're saying look our numbers show that we want. It's impossible to verify though there's nothing that ah you can use as an objective tool and already Joe Biden's campaign is signaling. Look we're not sure you can trust anything out of this. We Wanna see the numbers before you put them out. They are putting a Beagle big old flagpole out there say to the party. We are not sure that we'll ever be able to trust this. Joe Biden already night. The vulnerable position is that why he's the one being like there's this was all bad. This was all bad. Don't even Count Joe. Biden's team knew that bring a sanders went into this night with a really strong organization and a strong game plan. They had been tampering expectations for the last few weeks so so it is totally possible. That Joe Biden is trying to encourage all these reporters to look past these results that he might be able to benefit from headlines that are about the process and not about the results. And it's really possible that the final winner when all the dust settles really doesn't get the same boost of momentum that they would traditionally get because the contest of just just kept rolling on and it's normally supposed to be these headlines about a candidate that help rocket them into the next few racist supposed to go to New Hampshire with the wind at their back. Not just because they had a ticket get me like how do they eventually just had to get on a flight. Well I think they are all could not wait to get out of here for a variety of reasons up to and including the fact that this is not likely to be in play in the general election. I think the the whole usefulness of the Iowa caucuses was in question coming into the night and I don't think anything about this makes it likely we're going to be ever back in Des Moines for an important nominating contest again. Gum that big of a moments I think so rigged exactly right after twenty sixteen. You had leaders in the Party and a number of campaigns that were already questioning whether Iowa's should keep its first in the nation status. It's a messy process. A lot of people say disenfranchises too many voters. It's not regular voting. There's mail an option. You have to show up at the same time and now after through. This kind of mass reporting is so hard. There's going to be robust conversation about whether it makes sense to do this ever again real and now I know you guys have planned to catch will go recline maryalice parks. Thank you thank thank you. Thanks Brad and I'm thinking here. I'm disappointed right. We've been tromping around trying to give you a sense of a state that matters. So much for shaping shaping this race now. There's no answer it sucks. I'm thinking that I've been here for three days. There are people who spent the last year of their life with one singular goal all winning Iowa. Not just the politicians talking about volunteers door knockers. People move here for this. The numbers will eventually come in. We'll talk about them and we should but by then a lot of people will be talking about New Hampshire. No last night. All this energy has been building up was drying out. Thank you for calling the Iowa Democratic Party's caucus hotline on a phone line. Daily your goal next time on. Start here you thought this was anticlimactic. Democrats are trying to figure out the next steps for impeachment achievement. We warned you about another thing that really affected some of these candidates ability even campaign like normal normal said it will convene as a court of impeachment yesterday marked the closing arguments in the trump impeachment case setting the stage for final. Vote this Wednesday on whether to remove the president from office. Your duty demands that you convict president trump or not. This is an effort to overturn the results of one election in literally moments after this ended you had people like Elizabeth Warren sprinting back to Iowa. We've got ABC news legal contributor. cates shock US right now. So let's just talk about how these closing arguments went. Because essentially we know what the vote will be right so looking back on this. Where Democrats arguments fall short? Well one answer is that the arguments themselves weren't necessarily the problem for the Democrats Democrat so much as the Constitution's design right. The constitution requires a two thirds supermajority in the Senate to remove a president. The founders knew that in order for our republic to survive. We would need to be able to remove some of our leaders from office when they put their interests above the contras. Entre interest senators. We approve them in our history. We've never had any impeachment effort result in the conviction and removal of the president. So it's an extraordinarily high. Hi Bar and I think there's an argument that any hyper polarized moment where the president's Party controls the Senate. There's almost nothing if in fact anything that's going to raise the level of a two thirds. Vote to convict and remove. You can't trust this president to do the right thing not for one minute not for one election not for the sake of our country you you just. Can't you know it was really remarkable to hear this final statement from Adam schefter because he was appointed lead prosecutor by Nancy. Pelosi over in the house to come over to the Senate but he knows the president's not being removed tomorrow and yet it still seemed like he was kind of searching for something from these Republicans. Kate like he was making eye contact. Act with some of them on the floor. What is his case that he's making to them? You know shifts closing toggle between a few different lines of argument. One was if you don't convict this the president then all of a sudden. The wheels are off the bus and we are in an unconstrained world in which presidents can do almost anything with impunity. If you have found him him guilty and you do not remove him from office. He will continue trying to cheat in the election until he succeeds. I think he's also also trying to convince the senators to somehow make a statement right to stake out a position that condemns this conduct if you find that the House has proved proved its case and still vote to acquit. Your name will be tied to his with a chord of steel and for all of history one thing that might great service. A disincentive is a sufficient level of condemnation from the president's own party even if it doesn't rise to the level of voting against him maybe they make some statements from on the Senate floor. Maybe they put out press releases the tweet about it like Lamar. Alexander did Lamar Alexander. The Republican. He basically said Democrats interpretation of what happened is right and yet. It's also not impeachable right but he did say it was inappropriate and that I think matters and it will matter if other Republican senators. Maybe more moderates people like Susan Collins or Mitt Romney Make statements that are similar to Senator Alexander's. At least that sends a message to the president. That is going to get blowback from his own party if he tries is to do anything like this again. The president's behavior shameful and wrong because they're all sort of saying. Yeah he did it just a question of how seriously think it it is. I cannot vote to convict and like you said two thirds majority for removal. That seems out of the question but there are still some variables to keep your eye on tomorrow. Got Moderate moderate Republicans. Would they vote to convict. The president got moderate Democrats. Would they vote to join Republicans and acquit the president and remember that idea of censure that only requires fifty one votes will see. The parties might get together on that not a lot of unification so far though Kate Shaw you'd be watching. Thank you thank you Brad and one last thing is I pack up today head back to New York I really WanNa know. What is Tuesday morning going to be like for Iowans? What's it like when we all leave? You mean my cellphone won't be getting five million check soon. I won't be getting all these strange calls. I kept asking people this yesterday and almost was to a person they agree. It's kind of bizarre. So every four years. It's just the same thing. It's six to nine months of hype and then just literally. He'll stop tomorrow. They they said the yard signs stay up many claimed they don't particularly mind the attention. It's nice to have a lot of people in Iowa. It's good for the economy to what they're done with our the political ads those those are the things that find you everywhere no more ads on the Internet no more as on the radio no more ads on TV. It all just goes away but when I asked know specifically what about those nosy reporters orders like are you glad to see them gone. A woman looks at my microphone and says no comment genuine. Thanks to those folks here in the state that are constantly being asked by journalists for their most personal thoughts or just the nearest power outlet now we are allegedly. Getting the results of the Iowa caucuses later today. If that does happen we will of course have full coverage on. ABC News Dot Com or the ABC News App. I'm Brad milkey about to fly back our buddy. Alex Stone will be in the chair tomorrow breaking down in the state of the Union..

"It's five forty three PM. In Anthony Iowa I see in Caen is the windy neighborhood. It's just outside Detroit. Suburban area and walking into a gym at prairie trail. Elementary School is caucus night. Everyone yes I think it is so no one else to caucus. No one else is allowed to come in the room after some painstaking instructions from the caucus organizers. I Windsor finally told after months of waiting. Go ahead. But you're okay here we go. I think it has started people. Start to make their way. Under the sign of their favorite candidate immediately becomes clear. This neighborhood likes it. Looks even between Bernie and Pete Deep. Amy Looks Small Close Charlotte spied and I can't tell who's Biden who warned warns warns over. There looks like decently populated later. Worn looks strong in every precinct. They are surprises. And the shocker. This night in agony youtube through three four five six Joe Biden thirty thirty six. Am Mak- remember. You need fifteen percent of the roof. Any of this matter Biden out of the year and starting right at this moment you get fifteen more minutes to hit that mark will find a new candidate can see this push and pull on the floor Biden supporters. Who just need the few extra people in their Corner Bernie? I say like and their big rivals who smell blood in the water finger. Overdrafts wandering around the room watching this play out in Real Time Elizabeth Warren supporters or waving friends over turnover and we're happy to have Bernie Sanders fans or going in digging for a chance. Komo no no are you are you sir. I'm certain suddenly the Biden folks look around and he says not happen. Joe Is my first choice. And within within two minutes they've scattered most of them making the ten foot walk over to the Pete. Buddha judge crowd back by gone in the more people you talk to Des Moines Cedar rapids. Anki really felt like this was happening in other places to this was mayor pizza night. Everything seemed to be going great so until it wasn't the surprise Iowa hours after the first in the nation caucuses wrapped up still no result. We are following breaking news tonight here out of Iowa Ella Caucus chaos right now. They're in this rock the caucus event. Everyone's waiting for results in for some reason. Those results aren't coming. Then we start hearing this might actually. It'd be a problem. There's a real good deal of confusion here. No one seems to know when these results are going to come. It's remember this is a night that can make or break campaigns. If you put all your work in Iowa and you bomb you might have to quit your campaign like sometimes it happens the next day if you succeed in Iowa you better get to New Hampshire to capitalize as quickly the as you can so candidates. Don't know what to do in one by one. Unbelievable Easter coming out sings supporters. GonNa be a long all night when I'm feeling good. Don't know what's going on. So we'RE GONNA go to New Hampshire anyway. So where are you like. What City are you in? I'm in Cedar Rapids Right now calling. ABC's Ryan Burrow covered a different precinct. A couple of hours away. So do you know what's happening. What happened just spent a couple of hours in a venue with their precinct secretaries he was trying to Colon the results. You had it on a piece of paper everything that we had seen that night's everything that transpired old the information within your hand desperately trying to call this phone number two recorded in Des Moines and she couldn't get through except getting a business or as you said it wasn't a busy signal that's on for hours and hours your call will be answered in the order in which it was received. We look forward to talking to you soon. So like what does she did she did she hold the whole time. Or what. Is it resolving itself as my question is is just being her sitting at this venue everyone else is clearly not four hundred people there. Everyone else has cleared out all the stats cleared out. Go five janitor walks in and says he has getting out of here now so I believe she was still on hold at one point. She told me she just hop in their car and drive the result. Even rat devoid. It would take less time waiting for this phone uncalled. Wow okay. That's insane. Okay thanks Ryan all right. Okay relieving the Buddha judge event. No one knows what's going on so we're GONNA head back to the ABC News headquarters in Des Moines. And we're GONNA find somebody who understands what just happened.

"I am not I'm not leaving my party but I have as anybody who's filed me since about nineteen ninety-three knows I'm always left trump so I'm sticking around the fight. The the losing never trump battle in the short term and hopefully win the win the prize and the right term because I am a conservative. All I can say is Mike come on in the water's fine. Well let let's go to. I hear the magic music. The audio staying. I should say it's time for last. Call Robert. You WanNa go first. And then I'll bet cleanup. Yeah Ah this. I think you touched on this earlier. That there's a lot of different storylines that will come out depending on where these candidates finish In eighteen eighteen days in Iowa and I can think of lots of different ones and reporters notebook filled. I'm sure with these storylines and I've harped on this for a while so I I think it is going to be really interesting to see. We've got four big candidates Iowa doesn't have a history of leading four people. Go go forward and let me give you a little background. Since one thousand nine hundred seventy two Iowa has had seven multi-candidate Democratic caucuses only once in in those seven in one thousand nine hundred eighty two has the eventual democratic nominee. Not finished in the top three in the Asterix of course in Nineteen ninety-two do. Was Tom. Harkin favorite son Senator from Iowa is running in the caucus he gets seventy six. And a half percent uncommitted actually finishes second and Clinton finishes fourth so it is by no means a normal year. We have a huge vote of candidates but Iowa doesn't is it normally let more than three tickets. Leave that state. You want to be on a plane that night on one of those top three campaigns and I think it's going to be fascinating fascinating to see in eighteen days somebody that we just spent a lot of time. Talking about is going to finish out of the medals and the real real question is with New Hampshire a week later and boy united know this. Well it seems like forever until the race starts in the voting starts folks once it does. The treadmill is on twenty miles an hour and it is really hard to have a moment. If you don't have that momentum and I'm I'm going to be fascinated to see that night who gets on that plane finishing fourth and what what role do they play And what viability do they have have going forward. I totally agree that week. Between Island New Hampshire is like falling down a flight of stairs. And you've gotTa have that. I will momentum now I will say one of the great secret slogans in New Hampshire. Screw Iowa so that second place in Iowa is not a bad place to be but forth there as you say three. And I'd even argue the two and a half tickets out of Iowa Bernie being scary to a bunch of the regulars could make that third thing more viable to somebody if they have the huge comeback back in New Hampshire and so I I couldn't agree more all right well. My last call is more a point of observation and irony then a point of criticism and I say that both because it's true and I'd like to work again. The debate last night about shoot a woman be president. The answer is Bernie said is obvious. Of course not only should one day maybe now the countryside but also can there's also a lot of talk about. Why was there no candidate of color on the stage? Well I'm always for that I. It gets an important particularly for the Democratic Party. That has so many voters of color but the reason people are on or off the stage is twofold one the the debate rules set by the DNC. I've been critical of those rules. I think they're kinda silly. And I think the incentives are wrong. But they're based on fundraising and polling but the polling is less sophisticated than the chattering class. Voters just say what they think and the biggest problem candidates of color of had and to a lesser extent female email candidates so far in this process is in the polling. They haven't done well fifty. I my guest. Depending on the polling fifty two to fifty five percent of the Iowa Caucus voters will be women yet the two very credible well-funded and Strongly performing female candidates says performed. Amy Klobuchar together are doing about twenty three percent of the vote so what the voters are telling us is while genders important and being perceived as anti woman where you know Elizabeth Warren was trying to thanks and Bernie is definitely Kryptonite. And for good reason voters when making candidate choice are not necessarily lead by gender there led by a lot of other things because of they voted only on gender There'd be a hell of a lot more polling strength for Elizabeth Warren Amy Klobuchar so it tends to over simplify things things. When in doubt look at what the voters are telling you the same thing of voters of color I was always struck by what a struggle cory booker and Kamala Harris? And I'm a particularly big Cory Booker Booker Fan. I think he's rather courageous and I was impressed by his candidacy. At least the rhetoric and message of it. I'm pressed by him. Neither of them in polling could get a lot of attraction at least early with African American voters and they were not unknown. The African American voters were choosing. Joe Biden now. You can argue that you you know. Perhaps there ought to be a different calculus and I'm fine with that. The Democrats can sort it out but this thing is mostly driven by voter choices. As reflecting an early polling that can change but I hearing voices. call the process totally illegitimate. And that's kind of unfair voters opined for what they want and then they get it so this simple title identity prison. We have that people must vote their genetics Is Just not how the voters operate. And this is the point of clarity from the numbers. I'd I'd like to make again. It's not a criticism of any candidate. Yeah and Mike you and I have worked in races where by women candidates actually have a tougher tougher time with women right and so the dynamic isn't as easy as just thinking. If you look sound or act like me you'll vote for me. I think it's really on these campaigns to figure out what their lane is what they're unique messages and I think we may look back and realize that a lot of what we've seen is taken up by candidates that we knew were already going to be there right Biden Warren and Bernie. They're they're sucking up a lot of that vote and they're just may not have been a big enough lane for somebody to go around those three cars. Yeah I think so Fame and name I. D is a priceless asset early because cooks the polling and a lot of what the campaign does is up in that Barack Obama Surpassing Hillary Clinton Britain so over time the process reward it. But if you if you calibrate to the voices of early polling it is going to reflect what the voter say that criticism criticism I think could be due early polling of voters those voters have opinions that are predicted because over a campaign. They change their opinions as a damn will have the right to do. But anyway I I as this thing reached the fever crescendo. I just wanted to make the point that you know. The voters are driving this process. Let me add one thing. One scary thing for campaigns. Mike is if I did a little research this morning. I think we've got one more divine register. Poll coming I it looks like the Des Moines Register. Mr Did a poll. Maybe the weekend before two thousand sixteen so it will be interesting. The campaigns have led in one of the four Des Moines Register polls. It looks like we may have If they follow true to form like they did in twenty sixteen we might have one more of these polls calls Campaigns will be nervous strung out wreck by then waiting in hitting refresh On the website to figure out where they may end up. That is absolutely true. there are. There are still so many twists and turns to happen at boy. Oh boy I I am glad that I'm only opining on the campaign not doing it. Because I meant done done. I will caucuses and I remember that late. Poll and how it just turns everything upside down. Well Anyway Robert. Thank you for joining us here on hacks on tap and we'll be talking talking to somewhere soon Mike. "The only person on this stage who has beaten in an incumbent. Republican anytime in the past thirty years is me. That was as good as Elizabeth Warren gets it was the dominant sound owned by the debate on a connected with the crowd so I give her an eight for that one absolutely a strong answer and and let's be clear the back and forth that they were having having is not just about gender. It's about electability. And electability is driving a big part of the passion in the Democratic primary It will drive it in Iowa in a huge way because Democrats want to win the White House back they want to deny four more years to president trump and I think she put this in the frame of electability right. We've won The women up on this stage have won every race. We've been in. You guys have lost last ten races. I beat an incumbent Republican You know I a a really strong answer and it shows you that. A lot of these campaigns pains probably came in with four or five moments that they wanted to have This one was rehearse. it was probably done almost verbatim and she delivered it really well really convincingly and it's the clip that you'll hear throughout the day today tomorrow as you said capturing that media attention for the next couple of days he's And I think it was a great moment for her in this debate. You know I I got a couple of horse laugh watching it right afterward because I thought Oh. That's a good piece of work. Although as a political hack I was snorting because only Democratic primary. Could you brag about winning Massachusetts. I did it again I I. I beat the Conservatives who dominate the clave of Massachusetts and then they all pivoted and Ben Bernie got all cranked up nineteen forty eight Iran against a hoover Republican. I beat you got. Yeah your facts wrong and then somebody else you know and I a little bit of a of a tear came to my thinking about poor Steve Bullock the governor of Montana a red state where we're keenly beats Republicans Being laughed out of the race. Never really getting in it and Michael Bennett who I would argue and Carville just endorsed doors is the most electable candidate is from the swing state of Colorado where he's done well I can't get arrested right now. So the fact is it was all phony. They're all talking about winning easy states for a Democrat to win but it still made for an effective line so she wins the prize. She wins the prize. I did think it was I. I'm sure the Bernie people were pulling pulling their hair out at this when as you said they get to this point in the debate. And he's like well you know. I beat a Republican and it was thirty years ago and she said why said in the last thirty ready at. You're thinking to yourself if you're Bernie you're kind of out of this back and forth on on gender in a way that that that hasn't hurt you that story's really elite challenging and important. How do you make sure that you don't get sucked into this? And he almost did. Yeah totally well in the In the line nine sweepstakes even though I think she had a bit of a flailing debate as benefits or situation the polling I thought Amy Klobuchar. Dr Has remained the best critic of the Medicare for all stuff Roy where I think joe issues he had but she's good it ends. Had this vegas chips analogy that. I thought was pretty strong way to frame it here. She is this debate. Isn't real. I was in Vegas the other day and someone said. Don't put your chips on a number. You're on the wheel. That isn't even on the wheel. That's the problem over two-thirds of the Democrats in the US. Senate are not on the bill that you and senator. Warren Oren are on. I think to your point about Biden. He could aside Karen that a little bit more because a lot of those counties the cloture people unless she has a surgeon next two weeks six which is not impossible. They're going to be falling off in the more. She is the common sense fiscal restraint. Moderate Democrat Joe should be blowing that horn to try to Atlanta the second-place voices and it's usually other than his clothes which I thought was good. See that's the winning Biden. We saw a little more of it in the last debate the rest of it was was workmanlike. He didn't make any terrible Biden. Gaffes which for him as an accomplishment always so you know I don't give him a D. or enough but it was sort of a C. Plus flat performance form until the end. And if you believe the register poll of him a few beats behind he he needs to do a little better than that the closest race because the guy in the most danger I think is a biden his third the fourth and a week later. He can't come surging back in New Hampshire. He's toast. He's the former front runner. Front runners aren't allowed to lose. It will be interesting to see and we obviously won't don't know this for several weeks but does does anybody rethink their debate strategy in hindsight after tonight now again I think based on where the race is as they did what they needed to do. I think your point on cloture I think she makes the contrast in a more pointed more detailed way way than than Biden does and and in a way biden. You would want to make a terrific line where she says where she talks about this idea of just because it's the biggest number? Does it mean it's the best policy meeting the biggest numbers good in terms of spending. I think and I think I. I thought like she's got a lot of ways. You can even see it when when they got into foreign policy with Biden in a in a place that he clearly wants a to excess weight his advantages that he already enjoys because he was vice. President Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair but even even in that He basically finds himself agreeing with part of the answer that he gives because he didn't give it authorization of military thirty four. So I I again I thought just you know. He just probably wasn't sharp on some of the points that I thought he might again what they may be doing and may a smartly be doing is if you figure Amy Klobuchar. Six or eight isn't going to be viable but she's basically talking to the same voters I am. Let's it's just let's hang back a little bit. Let Amy make the contrast on Elizabeth and then if I'm in that precinct in pot Awami Oughta me and somebody doesn't have the viability threshold in. Amy Can't maybe they just walk over to the Biden. Yeah I just think he has to use the debate to hang a bigger lantern. He was kind of oddly passive. Yeah but that's again part of not screwing up by also has the headwind. I think of a little weaker organization. He's going to have less veteran staring at people from the second round around and that counts in Iowa Caucus. Now let's talk about Mayor Pete. Here's somebody who was on fire and now is not doing poorly but his lost at least in the polling a little bit of the momentum he dropped nine points from the last register poll on this one. Now that said the mere Pete people have told me their internal tracking was never as good as the last registered Paul but he was somebody I think who needed a gearshift. He's always very lucid. He performs well. There were no mistakes but what what was your take last night on Pete versus where he needs to be too close strong. I'm here in potentially even being the top two in Iowa. Yeah I thought it was going to be an interesting night for him because as you said if you look at where he was in that register poll and boy boy. I'm sure they cringed when that poll came out A couple of months ago. You just you don't you. Don't get to decide when you're gonNA peak and God knows a bunch of these campaigns. Aren't ever going to peak so you don't WanNa look that in it. Take that for granted but boy it was clear that the wave at crested too early really he lost a decent amount as you saw in this des Moines Register poll. It came particularly on those who Lessen their belief his favorability His very favorable number decrease in I think he needed to go out and remind folks of his generational message so again. I thought he did a fairly good job of of not just taking a question and saying here are the seven issues. I believe are important but wrapping them in a Botha Generational and I haven't served my whole life in Washington frame which I think is important. Because that's his contrast contrast right the top stars side you've got the other four candidates who have spent are either currently in or spent a huge amount of their life in Washington and his message is if you think Washington it messes everything up. I let me remind you. I'm not from Washington and Oh by the way I'm also not really old and so I think he tried to wrap that into again. I think whether it was where the polling is or where where the format is questions tended to lend themselves to answers that seemed like forty five seconds out of their stump speech and I think Pete did a good good job of delivering those stump speech moments. Here's a Pete moment which I thought was pretty strong. I'm ready to take on. Donald trump was because when he gets to the tough talk and the chest chest thumping he'll have to stand next to an American war veteran and explain how he pretended bone spurs made him ineligible to serve and if and if he keeps trying to use religion if a guy like Donald trump keeps trying to use religion to somehow recruit Christianity into the GOP gop. I will be standing there not afraid to talk about a different way to answer the call of faith and insist that God does not belong to a political local party but my criticism of Pete who I'm sympathetic to because I like smart presidents even if they're far more liberal than I am is that he never seems to be or very infrequently just needs to do it more to take command of the stage absolutely has like and now. We go to Pete for a very informed opinion and thoughtful remark. And he's very good at that but to close does this thing. I think there needs to be a more everybody's looking at Pete and he owns the dam. Stage Biden had a little that during his clothes. Worn had that when she you know slammed the swung the big gender hammer around clobbered a few people. Amy Never quite had it but when when she was kind of going at somebody. There's a little bit of drama to it. When Bernie really winds up his act and is putting the corporations on alert and getting ready to slap the cuffs on you know the fortune five hundred? There's some intensity to it. Well we'll pete becomes the observers so so that is the missing piece but but with all that said you know. I'm having a little bit of a flashback. To the wonderful days of the two thousand fifteen two thousand sixteen Republican primary. Hi Marion these analogies. You gotta be careful with. But when trump had his voters which isn't a twenties at the beginning in started growing winger bit all the rest of US looked at trump. People we can see in the polling are pretty locked into trump so you had bush and Rubio in case they can Christie into lesser extent crews. Who who was kind of floating in trump's wake all turning on each other to say all right we're going to emerge as the anti trump and win the two way in the end And there's a lot of criticized well why Jeb smells money killing trump. Well wasn't our job to clear a path for Rubio Cruz because trump voters had you know some affection but no interest voting for a guy they thought was establishment as JEB. So I see Bernie You know my headline on this debate is Bernie getting closer to potentially winning owning the Iowa caucus or at least being in the top two which will change the dynamic of the race. Because then it's going to be down to Bernie versus somebody and they all better solve that. Who the somebody thing is pretty quick which will be a Biden Pete the some extent Elizabeth race though he can squeeze her out because of their similarities through the New Hampshire Primary Maria Week? Before or Bernie may really start a run here so I think the headline is Bernie's real and he's coming and you know the AH DEM's gotTa get organized about it or trump's going to have the happiest week in February and his life. I agree with you on Pete. I mean there's an and you know the one thing about these debates is those awkward cut-away pictures of the candidate with the kind of blank. Look on his face holding his hand or her hand up hoping to be recognized. Yeah third-grader yeah teacher. Call on me. I did my homework to And I think as you said I think sometimes pizza sink back a little bit you. Oh you do want that moment. I think it was smart of him not to try to force that moment because again that's awkwardness and the dynamic that we talked about in the beginning I think he was I think he had a pretty good close But I agree with you. I think there's there's a spark that he's going to need to look for it out again. The the the advantage he may have Presumably will be. He's GonNa be in a bus in Iowa when these other guys are back in the Senate and that's a good point. Ah As you said look I I I think one of the things you said to I mean sanders is headed avoiders Paul..

"Let let's pivot to the debate with a footnote on the way I should unless to avoid any angry emails from Biden press staffers note a second poll all the Mama. The poll which is not as much of a famous icon of Iowa politics by any means is the the Mr poll but it came out it was in the field. Four days later came out on the twelfth. The register poll came out on eight which means when they stopped interviewing voters. So it's a couple of days fresher and it was interesting because it had Biden leading at twenty four Biden you know was running a tight fourth in the moines poll Bernie at the top at twenty Biden. Hundred fifteen on this one biden was up at twenty four and then it was. They were clump between fifteen and seventeen the the other three peat burning and Warren and again amy down at eight in this case a little better than six registered poll. So you've got one Paul says Joe's gotTa Hustle Up. You've got another poll. Hi this is Joe is leading and it just shows you kind of murky. It is last night and again. How in the debate? Nobody nobody wanted to a negative mistake. That could backfire. Fire was a much more dangerous and a more desirable goal than a risky swing for the fences. And that's why it was the sonics debate and I think it's if you're a reporter Porter You're building up this idea of. Hey this is the last debate before the voting starts in the caucus which is a bit. Maybe maybe of of a misnomer in the sense that they're these candidates are going to see literally hundreds of thousands of voters between now or most of them will depending on their jury jury duty obligations. They're going to see a lot of voters so it is. It's not as if this is the night before the election. And they there. There's this huge impetus as I said I. I think all four of the of the big four can win they'd like the cards they have and As you said there's just not a lot of upside in Y- in in in pushing that too far right right. And they've got other ways to nibble they've got field they got caught the mailboxes or fold. The TV. Airwaves are jammed. I mean they as you say they're not out of business is what this was really and I agree with what you the way you possibly that it was the last chance to really grab the media for a few days and I think one the problems for Pete and Biden not problems just kind of irritants of last night's debate was Elizabeth. Warren grabbed at somewhat on Trivia. You know the famous denied handshake from L.. After the debate. I guess we should start with a little bit about their Cold War and then right through the candidates last night you went to walk us through how to happen because you know there. There's some precursor to this or that. Volunteer script rightly so. It's like a cold war there smiling but under the surface or stabbing each other well and the interesting part is we've come a a really long way in the political life of this campaign and almost at every turn each of the candidates has had the opportunity to critique or criticized besides the other Sanders in Warren and they almost always demure Saying there they share a lot of their same beliefs They're not running against each other even though they obviously are And so I think there has been this There clearly in the same lane of voters which you could see that in the polling is one rises the at the other has gone down so there are caught in this totally. It's not exclusive but somewhat battle over the same folks and when Elizabeth was doing what well if three months ago it was really hurting Bernie. Now Bernie's having at least in the polling a comeback and the story drops. I guess on Monday Sunday. Well as you said that I volunteer scripts of and you know the the way the sanders campaign explains it is. It's not necessarily a proactive script gripped. It's if you're at a door and somebody says well I like your candidate but I also like this candidate here. Are some reasons why you know you may be shouldn't be for this person. You should be for my person got into well the the the the war in Warren Voters or the Warren campaign really is is represents elitist Pitas and represents a different group of people and and maybe not the group of people that you're in and again it was this it's rarely early. Does the volunteer door script of of a door knocker in story county become a national political story story but it did over the weekend and the press of course is bloodthirsty for conflict between them. I mean literally Bernie look at her funny would break through the story so thanks a script that on the phone or at the door when somebody says well I'm kind of leaning toward Elizabeth and then it's a great passive aggressive script. It's worth reading. Basically said well. She's really great and wonderful. Full now you know it may be a problem. The fact she killed that guy in Toledo in eighty eight or the army boots. She wears all the time. I don't know if they show win. You know she's kind of a wine and cheese candidate unlike Bernie Bernie the anyway they go on and on now by the way I would bet dollars to donuts that the field directors in the Warren campaign having equal bid of business when when somebody starts pushing Bernie on the phone but this one got discovered by the press so all of a sudden it's Zimmerman Telegraph. WHOA WHOA WHOA? And you know it turns on for a while but it sets the stage in Warrenville of all right payback time and and then the story POPs. I guess Monday that in a dinner that was had between Warren and Sanders They have a discussion About electability about gender and It's reported that Bernie Tells Elizabeth Warren that a woman can't win the presidency. I'm hoping he literally used the phrase. Hey missy MRI. Because he's Bernie as Oh yeah allegedly now th. I thought when it first broken I'd be very interested in your opinion as former White House. Press Secretary Secretary. This thing was a private conversation between two people know staff and now it's in the paper with an allegation about what one said where neither at the beginning was a source. Russell this telephone. It's high school. Well I hear that you know Reggie and lean where together last night in Orleans says that Bobby Really Likes Kathy and now a sudden that's in the paper of no name sources. I thought it was pretty sketchy at the beginning but then Elizabeth well. Elizabeth weighed in But interestingly really you know it was pretty well sourced three or four sources had been told the same story so it seemed the story seemed pretty rock solid I I think the Sanders folks realized that they went. This was Defcon one. They had to do something they quickly got. People out there Bernie denied the campaign manager denied it surrogates denied it now. Maybe even took it a little too far because then wasn't just denied that it was said but said they're lying. The campaign is right right and that I think when you get to defense condition one. It means you're at war and this is what happened and I think that caused Warren to put out a statement Later that day even though she for a long time. Several hours didn't comment on it. She puts out a statement. Says that's what happened. And now and now that she's involved it's a real deal story because she becomes resources and that sets up. What we know is going to be one of the pressure is your point moments in this debate and I thought CNN was smart To not start with that I mean it was on the tip of everybody's tongue everybody's wanting to see see this dynamic and they could have thrown that red meat right in the middle to at the very beginning and they didn't But it was clear that this was I was going to get testy. It was clear that for whatever reason to people in the room having the same conversation and either heard or believed to to a decidedly. Different things I don't it is interesting to think. Could you really come out of that. Discussion with one believing One had said the woman couldn't win and the other thinking of course I didn't say that it does seem like a black and white thing. Well Bernie his denial earlier left a little a little bit of a trap door. Because as an I I won't have this verbatim but but these are things that are there written like depositions. But he said in the discussion or a source close to burn. Anyway they put out the message that Bernie might have said that trump is a sexist and racist and a bad dancer of stupid hair so in a campaign. Don't expect him not to try to a US sexism and stuff like that. I mean they they kinda tickled the border there but the warn people tried to make a thing out of it and in our last call. I've got another point about this whole this whole topic. But do you think today the big media chase and maybe something's on the wire I missed. It's early here in California will beat reporters trying to get Bernie or Elizabeth Staff on background to say what the post-debate no handshake back and forth was about. And that's the new jumpoff jump-off characterization that'll make the thing go for another day. Of course all of this squeezes Biden. Who would love to be writing about world affairs expert dominates debate during time of Iranian rainy in crisis or mirror p generational peel excites voters? Instead were were debating whether or not to Elderly left wingers agreed to shake hands after debate or not. And if you see the clip of this you can tell gets tents pretty quickly and I mean any time. Somebody wants to shake. Somebody's handed. They Demur That's not exactly a great way to start a conversation It becomes cranky people to be honest Neil Hammer sunny personalities I think she can be but If you wanted to know what one hundred million dollars to get on a debate stage looks like for Tom Star. He's going over at that moment to basically weekly shake hands and say good to see you and it's pretty clear as standing there watching this happen and I think probably got booked on several shows does afterwards not because of a stellar debate performance. But the did you happen to overhear what Sanders have said to Warren and vice versa. So I you you know that that poor guy is is in the debate roundup as having been well thankfully we're off the war the same time for the team's time in a row but now did you the to argue and it was he his campaign. That's hilarious. He was the guy watching the big show go by but he was there. Who Do you think won? The debate wasn't her winter. I would juice. Scorecard is honestly. Don't think there was. I think each of the candidates probably feel fairly good about the case they made eight. I thought Though he didn't have big moments of contrast a real pointed moments I still think many of the candidates did what they wanted to do. I thought Bernie did a really good job A really good line When they got into the back and forth on Iraq again something you knew new Mike come and it comes in the very beginning and I thought Bernie did a really good job of saying look George Bush Dick? Cheney Don Rumsfeld all made the a case on Iraq I thought they were lying and Joe Biden believed them. and Um Yeah you know I. It wasn't he didn't outline it like that. In case you forgot who the vice president and secretary of defense were Those are Boogie men in the Democratic primary and he wanted to make sure that that that was laid forth. I you know I thought Well I think Elizabeth had a really good moment in the back and forth with with Sanders on the issue. We just talked about I. I think if you're Joe Biden this morning you're happy that nobody broke out in one. You're happy that you didn't make a mistake. But boy I felt like he was the gymnast. That just didn't stick the landing on most questions and I you know. Maybe you're getting eighty or eighty five five percent of the way there but you're not really I I just didn't think he made the case that he wanted to make as forcefully a until ironically the very end his closing statement which. I'm sure we'll get to You you watching the screen and you think to yourself. Where's the the passion and the forcefulness worse this guy been for the last two hours and ten minutes staff And now the upside of that is maybe. That's the last thing you leave people with me. Feel better about the beginning of it. It also could leave you thinking you know. I wouldn't generally take two hours and ten minutes to warm up but maybe in this case it did Yeah well I think there was one clear obvious winner which was the left wing. Nanny state. I mean I saw trillions of of spending promises go by and although trump what makes my blood boil and I want him to lose it was a rough night for Republican to watch the whole thing I mean they were making spending commitments. You would have been terrified to make an Democratic primary debate eight years ago but we're in a new era now as far as the debate. I think I'm performance. That was worn. WE'RE GONNA go to that clip in a sec but geo-strategically I think it was Bernie. He's the guy on the move. He knows his message. He plays his head..

"The popular vote by three three million votes. How could anybody in a million years not believe that a woman could become president of the United States and let me be very clear if any of the women on this stage or any of the men on the stage win the nomination? I hope that's not the case. I mean yeah. He went on to say there that he would support anybody who who did win. And after he said that he didn't make this remark to Senator Warren the moderator checked again and then insinuated that he did say it and asked Warren to elaborate a senator Senator Sanders Senator Sanders. I WANNA be clear here. You're saying that you never told Senator Warren that a woman could not win the election on his group. Senator Warren what did you think when Senator Sanders told you. A woman could not win the election. I disagreed Birdie is my friend and I am not here to try to fight with Bernie but look this question about whether or not a woman can be. President has been raised. It's time for us to attack it head on and I think the best way to talk about who can win is by looking at people's winning record so okay woman beat Donald Trump. Look at the men on the stage collectively. They have lost ten elections the only people on this stage who have one every single election that they've been in are the women. Amy The only person on this stage who has beaten an incumbent. Republican anytime in in the past thirty years is me. Yeah I for the first time. I'm hearing clovinger ago yeah. I don't think I heard it when I was is watching the debate But I am just going to say it was a really great answer so we watched the debate here crooked and I think everyone was pretty stunned by how effective the answer was in how Warren use it as an opportunity to highlight her particular electability In while both candidates appeared to WanNa move past this whole meeting Hoopla. It does sort of seem seem like senator. Warren's team prepped her with a pivot into talking about electability while Sanders decided to move past it. I think is right beaten incumbent Republican in one thousand nine hundred nineteen ninety was thirty years ago but that election wasn't in January so technically it hasn't been thirty years yet and Oh my God. What are we spend so much time figuring out the math on this also sometimes in a race or not running against the Republican incumbent does seem like Warren could have said in the past twenty five years ought to be extremely precise and move on? But she didn't so this is what we are talking about now. I still am not sure on the timeline of what really happened here. I don't do math. But honestly congrats grads to everyone. On their collective previous ws I will say though the exchange between them on trade was much more interesting substantive. Yeah and while. I'd hoped we could be done with it. He's done a lot of work both for voter registration and climate change in the past and you know namely this campaign to get trump impeached to answer through the sort of lingering question about what the heck is happening with him and how he ended up there. The most recent answer to that question is that there were two polls in Nevada and South Carolina Carolina that respectively had him like fifteen and twelve. Yeah I mean that was enough to have the final hurdle but he was pulling find had enough before that those were ones that were like way higher could be total outliers but to give one example of just sort of how his immense personal wealth is helping him compared compared to other candidates according to fivethirtyeight who got data from Kantar Campaign Media Analysis Group style ads aired five thousand seven hundred times in Nevada base media markets in December January. The other Democratic candidates combined aired six spots in Nevada. I mean don't act like six isn't a number zero zero. Yeah that means I mean if we're there five people in your six that means at least one each maybe maybe less than one for somebody else but still for every one time. You see the other candidates you see Tom Steyer like a thousand times basically is the map. There it just shows that you know with a lot of money you can still really really make an impact especially if you're spending it in places where the other candidates might not be spending it yet. Yeah that's right well. That's that's Tom Steyer before we go want to check in on where we go from here. Do we actually think this debate has changed anything. Is it even possible to say this point. I think I think the latter is is more likely. I think you know really in Iowa like we've said it appears to be very close based on what we know so far it you know a lot of people are in the mix there but mostly my my big takeaway was that. I don't think that there was any one thing that people are the candidates. I mean we're GONNA have to recover from days no major mistakes or anything And there's a lot of stuff that we as close watchers of all of this register is game changers in south might not end up having that long of a lifespan or even register with with voters as they make their choices. Yeah that's right. I mean I sort of feel like to be so die hard this early or late if you think about how long we've been sitting through this campaign. MP's Yeah I mean I think that what we keep seeing. All these debates is that they are all more similar than they are dissimilar they all want progress. They're liberal. I think they're they're all tired of trump They all WanNa make up with our allies and I think that after a certain point it's hard to pinpoint something that is a big enough difference like maybe their timelines are different or how they're planning to fund things are different but it's really It's just it's all starting to blur. Yeah they all want to be on time stiers America team. That's for sure I'm trying to get drafted. So there were a bunch of other policies that got debated last night the US MCA trade deal. "Last night six Democratic candidates took the stage at Drake University in Des Moines Iowa the seventh Democratic Nick Presidential Debate Bernie Sanders Joe Biden Elizabeth. Warren Buddha judge Tom Steiner and amy Klobuchar were all there. It was the final debate before the first primary voting gets underway in Iowa in just three weeks for two hours. They debated about foreign policy healthcare childcare. and WHO's on America's three hundred twenty seven million persons sports sports team. I got power forward. well. We're GONNA get into some key moments and themes of the night but first let's talk about what we thought of the debate overall Gideon how you feeling yeah. I mean basically basically going into this. We knew there was a pretty close race in Iowa. That's where the debate was. That's the first contest. The last poll we saw from the Des Moines Register typically reviewed as the best of the bunch had Sanders and the lead than Warren than Buddha judge than Biden. So what you think. And what a lot of pundits saying a lot of reporters say is that the the debates are going to be all about brawls fading and what we ended up with was something that was pretty cordial and technical. I think part of the reason that that happened is is because it's so close in Iowa because it kind of matters they're based on the caucus system who your second choice candidate is everybody's a little leery of pissing off supporters of other candidates. And that's why it sort of ended up being a debate that was kind of in the weeds of a lot of things that might be relevant for voters that were are in Iowa but more broadly could have maybe gotten a little lost in the sauce. Yeah I founded to be very policy heavy Because this is you know the nine douses debate that we've sat through. I didn't feel like there was any real big new information that came out and there was a lot that didn't end up coming up there. You Know Puerto Rico go is obviously front of mine for lots of listeners and you know myself included You know we didn't talk about gun. Violence which is a thing that a lot of people care about and so you know I just thought that we kind of I don't know I didn't think that it was a thorough enough debate and there were definitely moments. That could have happened. That just didn't get brought up. Yeah the only thing that that did feel new. Were even though a lot of it sort of was kind of introductory in a way that seven debates. It doesn't necessarily always feel like it should be. There was a lot of conversation on foreign policy but for me personally when I'm watching the stuff I'm having a harder time knowing exactly what it is that people are wanting. Are they just tuning in and learning thing about these people. Are they deeply knowledgeable about you. Know everybody. That's up there and the other thing. That was the remains funny. Is You have former vice presidential biden. Still doing pretty well and a lot of these national and early polls in yet nobody seems to be taking that that seriously are trying to make an effort to leapfrog frog him. That's very that's very true. Well let's go through a few key moments. Starting with the opening of the debate which focused on Iran and a question about why all of the candidates. We're prepared to be commander-in-chief. Yes so this is of course coming up in the context of heightened tensions with Iran that basically into high gear because of president trump's. I'm strong strike on major general soul money. Here's how Senator Sanders responded to this question in two thousand and two when the Congress was debating whether or not we go into a war in Iraq invade Iraq. I got up on the floor of the House and I said that would would be a disaster would lead to unprecedented levels of chaos in the region and I not only voted against the white help lead the episode against that wall so a couple of things in this response this is obviously the case that sanders wants to make go to the voters and say Look Biden and I I we might be pals we might be the oldest chance that are up here have really long records but there is one major difference between us and that is from Sanders perspective that he is saying he did not vote to get us into a war in Iraq and he has been consistent on foreign policy and one of the other things he demonstrated in that regard to you is that just last year he was able to work with Republicans namely Senator Mike Lee on a Yemen war powers resolution and now Lee supportive sort of a taking similar measures for Iran. So that's kind of the through line that he's arguing here from Iraq to this current moment and Joe Biden got a similar question along these lines. And here's how he responded. I said thirteen years ago. Mistake to give the president the authority to go to war. If in fact act he couldn't get inspectors into Iraq to stop thought to be the attempt to get a nuclear weapon. I it was a mistake and I acknowledged that but right out of the man who also argued against war. Barack Obama took me to be his vice president and once we once we were elected president he turned vice president. He turned and to me and asked me to end that war so this is obviously something that Biden has had to answer for before and with Iran in the news. We were sort of thinking that it would come up again and the funny thing is is it in two thousand eight. I mean this was one of the major topics of the primary. Wh that Barack Obama was in as the as the you know anti Iraq war candidate edited in now Biden yet again having been there is having to contend with it in his third. Run for the presidency You know he he wants to point out the fact that his Iraq war vote was a mistake in hindsight and sanders wants to focus on the fact that of the people that were up there they both had choices in this regard and Biden made his this choice to vote to authorize it and sanders made his Biden then moved on to talking about the Iran deal and the Obama Administration obviously a major accomplishment for them at the time and one that Biden and the other Democrats were were saying that they they needed to reinstate after trump withdrew the country from it. What were Some more of your thoughts on on that section. I think that that was something you were talking about for. Sure I mean I think that it was really wonderful because it's the first time we're seeing all of the Democratic candidates On the the debate stage since all of the fallout in Iran. And I think it was great that you know regardless of all of those things. You just mentioned They all really did take trump to task and question his credibility his His competency when it comes to this and I think that that's a line that does you know sort of breakthrough for the American people is that we're in a conflict right now that none of us voted. No one could vote for. He just did it and I I think. That's a strong statement for undecided voters or people who might be like. I don't know who I'm voting for from voting Republican. This time you know it might be helpful for them to say. Oh well oh I do like that. None of you are supporting this. Iran thing right absolutely. Yeah so that was important foreign policy stuff. Let's move onto less important other things that were going on this highly anticipated moment for no other reason that our national love of interpersonal drama takes over. This ended up being one one of the more talked about moments of the Night Senators Warren and sanders were asked about the alleged comment that sanders made during a meeting a year ago regarding a woman's ability namely namely warrant in this case to win the Presidency Sanders answered. I well matter of fact I didn't say and I don't want to waste a whole lot of time on this because this is what Donald Trump and maybe some of the media want. Anybody knows me knows that it's incomprehensible that I would think that a woman cannot be president. President of the United States go to Youtube today. There's a video of the of thirty years ago talking about how a woman could become president of the United States in two thousand fifteen I deferred in fact the Senate award was a movement to draft Senator Warren to run for president. And you know what I sent stayed. laid-back Senator Warren decided not to run. I did run afterwards..
