New Features of Safari 14

"I thought it'd be worth while to kind of dig in because safari got a lot of changes this year. It did work to now version fourteen of safari which is something that when we wrote it out like. Oh i feel really old. I remember once the fire was brand new version fourteen. It has a lot of changes in it and what it's cool like. We said earlier apples good about supporting older. Oh in terms of software update safari is is one of those examples it will run On mohave and catalina in fact came out mid september. So you probably already been using safai fourteen for a little while. But i thought we could talk through some of the features under the hood. There's some changes of flashes. Gone of course get better performance and things like javascript. Page loading apple always talents. That know safari. Superfast senate is. When's the last time you ran flash and safari though. It's been a long long time. I'm guessing me like six years. I mean flashes. Basically gone everywhere. Yeah yeah the The thing i'm most excited about really is this idea of them. Bringing in plug ins. You know an more robust plug in architecture. Yes so the the new extensions. Api we talked about this where a company or developer has an extension available to them. They've already written for chrome or firefox or something else they can bring that in through ex code. Gotta go in the mac app store. There's a new section in the maps or now for these things but they can pour these faraway easier than they used to be able to before this developing is a far extension was like a one off the way apple did it was an unusual than it used the the tool. So that's a ra- standardized or on chrome and firefox cts From a user perspective though because the far east of Based on privacy is that you can really control. The access is extensions. Have to your data so you can allow it on specific sites or all sites. You can say you only have access to this for one day. A lots of of really nice settings to limit what these things can do because a lot of these extensions work by seeing what you're doing in your browser and of course that does have privacy implications yet it gives you that great Ecosystem plug ins without the wild west mentality of like. What did this just due to my computer. 'cause and some other browsers you really don't know The so good on that. I haven't really seen the payoff on that yet. Though i mean there are several apps that i'm or plug ins and following. That aren't there yet. But i feel like that's only a question of time. Now yeah i think so. I think it will take a while. I think those will be more successful than apple's past extension programs. But i don't think we're ever going to see the wide range of things that see in something like chrome i think a lot developers won't bother with safari but for those who do. It'll be a lot less work for them.

"Quick recive for aggressive considering what the the goal is. And I don't even know if that's that's not Google stated goal, right? Like that's kind of what we come up. They they've been very cagey about it. Very, but we were all kind of left kind of grasping at straws going. What is fusion? They're public enough about it that we know it exists. And that you know, like the news this week Bill. Stevenson, a fifteen year Apple's senior manager who actually oversaw the launches of all different versions of MAC OS lion through Mohave is now joining Google he announced on Twitter that he's going to be he's going to quote help bring a new operating system called fuchsia to market. Stay tuned. So I mean in some ways, you know, it's not it's not super secret. Right. We just had and we've actually seen it operate and seen it in operation. We just have. Idea. Because we're here we are three Chromebook users. Normally normally right now using an ipad. I think nah. Yeah. Raider it's Megan's doing the switch. I can't wait to get my pixel slate back standard the standard of comment that worries. You're gonna make. But so and they've gone I think as far as they can they can go it's still not on the show before. I if so they needs any kind of content rights management, it doesn't work. So Netflix is really flaky on on my Chromebook pixel is the app cer- awkward, you know, it it's better. But it needs a new s yes needs something. New to bring bringing together by fear is how much rewriting of apps there's going to have to be out there. And how long it's gonna take. You know? We'll Netflix say not big enough market whose unusual and we have to wait forever. That's the awkward transition time. Absolutely. My fear is that we all think they'll do the thing that we want them to do which is eight a combined thing that will be replacement. But then sometimes I remember, wait a minute. This is Google. We're talking about they they they are a company that they closed the thing. You don't want them to close, and then leave open the thing. And you know, how many communications they have right now. They just keep adding things. So one distinct possibility is that they will never kill Cromer, Android, and usual exist. And now, they'll real just assumed this would be really great for your refrigerator for your connected refrigerator. That's why we built few too many developers on Android, and we wanted to give some half of them someplace else to go. The twenty percents project. I guess we will. We'll find out someday. I feel like we're going to be talking about this with lots of guessing for a long time before we actually know. But I do think that there's there's some, you know, there's some trickle some nuggets there knowing the Bill Stevenson and his background is being brought onto the team that feels like feels like progress. Right. Like, he's overseeing. Yep. The launch of major S's. Yes. So there's some dedication. There's some confidence there as far as she's concerned. I don't know how many engineers I think the last time. I saw in a report it said somewhere around one hundred engineers more than one hundred engineers, which sounds kind of sounds light light for a whole damn though. S? Yeah. Yeah. So who knows? But you know, it's funny. It's funny about that. Is that is the it wasn't that long ago? When we got all excited on shows like this that a new version of an OS was coming out. So we talked about cube. But it's it's a bit of a shrug. The OS a web world the decision is important as it was an avid web world. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And as far as q features are concerned, like, you know, also keep in mind like that's that's based on a very early leak the OS in a month or two when they actually do their their official unveil of the alpha, whatever, it is the do not Fernie reason installed us on your phone. If you plan on using your phone everyday version, they'll probably have some more. But I think that what we know. Now, the grand or kind of a protest the the grand or kind of point is better permissions management as a really big core fee..

"That would be really unusual which I don't points the societas with this in any way. But it just feels like we're at the brink of something really big. It's like iphone software of map, right? Like. Yeah. But even that was mostly just like this what we're doing this version like I think this is going to be like this is what we're doing now and next year. This is going to happen in two years. We will be here as opposed to where we are today. So a multi step multi lease like overarching story about where they're going. A is like we're like we're standing like on like the the edge of something really big happening. But the MAC and IRS, and I feel like they continue to do this sort of thing this year like we have the marzipan apps on Mohave, and they're all kind of bad and like so we don't have to think about them like they're bad on their own. But they just beta apple label. His beta like, but when I build up on the MAC is going to have these controls like they in a vacuum of information. Like, the people think the worst thing, and if apple is getting ready to move into a really distinct transition time, I think putting those details out early helps people from freaking out, and I think apple needs to help people from freaking out right now. I agree with your thinking. Right. Like that. It would be a wise thing to do because of those reasons. The I the problem is the problem with doing that. Is talking about an architecture change in the abstract if they're not ready to do it. Because it could Maxine lls, right? Maybe. That was a risk when they did it with Intel people still about max, I don't know. Yeah. I don't know. I it's definitely a possibility. And it would be nice, right? But that also doesn't feel necessarily necessary like they showed off projects neek bake. But didn't say anything more about it. Right. They're just like this is the thing. And then that was it. And that was kind of all they did they didn't really give any details about how roll out a what would be available or like in what a what it would end up leading to. But it depends on how much they're gonna talk about like, if they're gonna do what you think they're gonna do and they're gonna have an all MAC of lable than. Yeah. Might be a good idea to talk about a multiple year plan about this stuff. So. We'll say all right. My my non great my last non graded pick was a rejected risky pick. So this is my first risky pick. But my fine. Co host my steamed choas said it was not risky enough. I disagree. Not both of them. Oh, yes..

"Com version of the website if you care enough, I wanna make sure I'm not sending an apple news. You are. I want to send the original URL. On the MAC version. There was no open in safari. And there wasn't a way to copy. The link. It was like one of the first ways I figured out to get a real URL out of it was to copy the URL. Which would copy an apple dot news slash whatever. Unique identifier URL, and then instead of using safari go to chrome and pasted in there, and then it would redirect to the original website because chrome doesn't know the magic. Hey, if it's an apple news URL open an apple news. But if you opened it in safari, it would always take you to safari. There was other than using chrome or some other third party software. There was no way to get the original URL like that's crazy and very unmacht. Like Donncha is limited anyway. I don't know. I see that stuff as a I'm very worried about it to be honest that if if this is actually a sign of where apple thinks, you know, that these are fine examples of. The other thing is that in the latest version of Mojave. They added a file share or copy safari link button or something I forget what they did. I don't use Mojave on a daily basis. So I forget what it was. They added a menu item that does that does give you the original URL. So there is that. It might even still be in. The the beta version, that's not actually shipping. So anybody out there who is looking in Mohave and looking for while I listen to this. Maybe it's not there yet. But there is a solution in the beta at least, but it is not it's not the right solution. It's certainly not the MAC like one. So I'm deeply concerned that these are. There either. Some type of prototypes that that are that affectively should have been branded as public betas that worshiping public betas of these four apps in Mojave Mojave will be shipping as a non beta OS in the fall, and it will include for public betas of these apps. Which they did not say these apps are not branded is public. Betas branded is the MAC version of home news, and whatever. I'm deeply concerned. If the mistake is that they should have been called public betas, and they didn't want to come public betas. But they've got much better ideas for where they're going with this stuff. Then I can't wait. I look forward to hearing about those ideas, if these are actually indicative of where apple MAC ups like what makes a reasonable MAC app from apple then I'm I've maybe never been more concerned about the future of the platform. That's that's the mystery. Isn't it is did they think these were? Okay. Or are. They just trying to the advantage of shipping is especially for news news is a news as an important platform for them. It's an thing for them to do home. Right. Having home kit. Support is important to have. I get why the you want to get those in Mojave. So you can say finally the MAC can do these things I've been complaining about no home kit support in the last couple of years. Right. So great. It was like when the MAC didn't have Siri for years. Right. Yeah. Exactly. And it's like, you know. Okay. So now now we can do that. And I get it. But there is I do think it's an interesting question. Why they didn't given how apple has really become much more open to branding things. As beta shipping. Beta things in their operating systems for a while. Now to not have branded these as a beta or something because I I hear just like you do I'm sure from people when you criticize these apps say, but you know, it's just a just trying it out. It's just new and it's like, yeah. But it in the shipping version of the software. It's not a beta it's the final version of these apps that ships with the OS, so they obviously have some degree of confidence because they didn't slap that label on it..

"Sensitivity. So it tries to smooth out the motion. If you want does a little different than the built in camera app. I'm not sure which one's better to be honest with the use them both, but the but it's just a very powerful video camera app. And you always hear about third party still camera apps. But filming pro, I think, is without a doubt the best option for shooting fish. Jio and it's just fifteen dollars. So it's half of our thirty of under thirty fifteen is probably a lot for an eyeless up to a lot of people, but man, this one, if you shoot video, you should have this one on your phone. Do we feel like that's changing any? I mean, are I feel like with this more apps are going towards subscriptions? I feel like developers who are really producing productivity apps are are getting a little bit less shy about charging more for their apps. And I think that's a good thing. I mean, all the ones that didn't are out of business. So that's that's what's happening. But anyway. Yeah. What's next on your list. All right next on my list I installed again Mohave and when I did it installs a safari version, twelve, that was one of the big features of Mojave is we got a new version of safari that did all of these great things for privacy and and everything. And all of a sudden I started seeing these ads everywhere that I hadn't seen them before. What's what's going on here? Well, I use an adblocker and I know that some people love them. Some people hate them. Some people are morally opposed to add blockers. Okay.

"The general consensus seems to be that bad and I understand that like this is the beginning of a process, but Apple's really pulling these beta or anything. Right? Which I'm surprised that then they'll all cold like home, beta news, beta like that being kind of shipped as if the finished. Yeah, this goes back to the conversation we had back in June, which is why. Even announce it this way. And I think the answer is one the existence of Steve trout and Smith. Yeah, say if we're going to show everybody like him, there's nobody like it, but you know, would have been clear very soon upon the release of of the first Mohave beta that these four new apps that apple extolled onstage are. Actually, it would have been clear, everybody would have known you just look at them. You can tell. Right. So how could you not say anything? And it is a developer conference. It allows apple to say on the record. Hey, guys. Next year we're going to ask you to do this not this year, but think about it start thinking about it, which I think is good. I think it's great for developers to get that piece of information. Here's where they never do this. Here's where apple is going in twenty nineteen, which is they're going to give you a way to convert your and run them on the MAC. And so many people WBZ are developers. We're going to give you that next year. So start thinking now, but we don't have any tools for you now. And I think that was the right move. I think that's the right move. And the truth is they do have a year. So what they are doing now is. You know the dog fooding right? It's they're using this stuff and they're finding, I think it is great because I think there is probably somebody who's responsible for news who's looking or not news for home, who's looking at that spinner in the scheduling and being like, we can't do this. This has to be better, and I'm disappointed that they didn't do that in Mojave, but I'm optimistic that sometime perhaps in Mojave update and or perhaps the next next year's release, stuff like that. That is very clearly not good enough will get addressed like multi window apps is not a thing right now, and perhaps it will be and might even be related to changes in IOS next year. Right? Where if if I less apps get multi window support, like safari has now, that could be part of the same thing that allows MAC apps running based on us to have that. But anyway, so I think it's good thing that they're doing it and it might. Give them an excuse to be like, yeah, we know they're weird, but at least you can cause the truth is at least I can turn my lights on and off from my MAC. Now I used to sit in here with no iphone no ipad and be like, oh, I need to turn that I have to get up and go find an Iowa device because my MAC sitting right here was incapable of doing it. So I mean, I'm glad the home app exists. I'm glad it's tied into Siri. That's all great. It's just, you know it does. It does make you wonder what exactly the plan is for next year. All right. Today's show is brought to you by a friends of at ERO. The folks at aero built the wifi system that you'll gonna won't feel home..
