La annual at the hammer museum and huntington library art museum and botanical gardens which has been stalled last summer. but he's only now gaining an audience. I spoke to jerry finkel regular contributors to the newspaper and the new york times about l. La's emergence from hibernation jewelry. Why is it. California has taken so long to open. Cova numbers got better in san francisco. San francisco museums reopen briefly. Two to four weeks and then had to close again. I don't know which is better opening for a month or not opening it all up and in the case of la that cove numbers have kept us in what they call the purple tier. Governor newsom has created a tier system an order for museums to reopen. They had to move out of the purple tier in that county. Meaning that counties metrics the number of cove infections per day Had to reach a certain level and we just didn't reach that level until recently so by by march we got the word that museums could reopen. That was exactly a year after they close like so many others across the world yep and so basically they opened Not all of them are even open yet so we have a case where lack my real and soon as it could. I think it was the first major museum here to reopen the hammer and the huntington reopened soon after that mocha is still closed. It's not opening until early. June the getty center is still closed. And they haven't given their reopening date yet. But we expect. I think even says on their website likely to be late may

Mental Health And Matcha Lattes With Dr. Vania Manipod
"Hi mana pod. Welcome to the wo- med. I'm so excited to have you here. And it's almost international women's day and it will be actually when this episode airs. I'm really excited for that. But i guess off the bat. How are you going to celebrate. I am going to actively participate in the campaign. i love the theme. i think it's hashtag. Choose to challenge. Oh okay yeah. I saw that on the website. Say oh every year i try and think what can i do to promote that day. And the ball is to encourage women and men to kind of like post different ways they plan to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality when they see it and in my opinion it's also kind of trying to find ways that we could each try and figure out you know look within also because i know competition among women is pretty common also to kind of think about if there's times that prevent us from trying to promote other women's accomplishments like what is going on within us to overcome bat. 'cause we're stronger together so got to figure that out we really are and you know it's something that i've i've struggled with two. You know i've felt threatened before about different women. You know coming into this space and starting podcast cinema. Why am i so threatened like there's room provinces totally goes against what. I'm trying to do here. So no like just changing that within myself to has been really cool growth wise and just to try and make space for other women right but i will say it's. It's kind of a struggle. At least you know with while that. I've been dealing within my damned especially during the whole election stuff like that is if i don't like someone else's views and they happen to be a woman. I get attacked with well. I thought you supported all women. And it's like that. That's not what does not what it means again. You cannot like what someone stands for and you can be vocal about that right exactly. You're not you're not alone on this actually something that i've done the work on even therapy to kind of figure out. Why why do i get so down. If i see someone who's doing more women who is doing more than me right right. No that kinda some. If we're going to elevate others that's just we gotta do the work right to figure that out right. I will also say this is. Sometimes i get on tangents. But i saw that. You're fellow macho lover. I am too i have. I make my own macho every single day. And what's your favorite milk to put in a macho a lot. Today i love that question. I i i love like the plant milk so much better. They are and i don't get the stomach aches so i like oatmeal but also combine it sometimes with cashew academia. Okay i might have to try that. I've combined oaten coconut before. And let's really lovely. Yes i do that. sometimes too. It's nice to mix it up every now and that is but i feel like they give you like this even better. Nuttier lynn creamier. Just oh it's so good it's just really good. Yeah i love that. You're a macho lover. So can i ask one question. Yeah i will leave it. 'cause i can go on tangents on macho also yeah. What is your favorite macho powder. The tea shop. That i was getting my macho from got demolished in the tornado. And i haven't been able to get it in over a year. So i will like there on. What's the brand of it. I found it on amazon. It's a little white ten ceremony or so many. there's so many but ones that i hate. It's like i think it's like this sunpower brand or something. It was like it was like almost a yellow. This is not like green tea. This tastes like dirt. Guess this is so funny and for all of you. This mental health related because macho. has some benefits on lessening anxiety compared to coffee. So it's relevant it does. It makes me so calm. And i never fully understood have never been a coffee drinker. I never understood what drove people in the mornings. Feel like. don't talk to me until i've had my coffee. You know or like when they just take that first sip like oh it's so delicious because it's never been delicious to me. I hate like anything coffee. Flavored colusa mocha ice cream. Like tearma sue. I don't like it. Because i don't like the flavor but once once the macho hits my lips and i'm like okay. This must be what it's like. 'cause this it oh calming it is coming and i have to admit though right before the podcast. I did drink espresso. That's fine. i don't usually you joel. Kiviranta jolt and boost. Because it's monday. It is a monday. I had to ask myself this morning too because when my friends like yeah i start my new job on monday and i was like it's monday. Why are you talking to me right trying to get over that monday type monday blues trying to make it not so much of a thing but it's hard it is it is.
Breaking the Sugar Habit | Dishing Up Nutrition Podcast
"Good morning everybody. i am brittany vincent. I'm also a registered dietitian. I work individually with clients. Teach many of our different nutrition classes but one of my favorite classes to teach is breaking the sugar habit so if eating sugar is a difficult habit for you to break i really recommend taking this online class for only twenty five dollars you can go to weight and wellness dot com. Click on nutrition classes at the top of our website. And i really think the most important reason nowadays to kick the sugar habit is because controlling your blood. Sugar plays a key role in the risk. You may have contracting and then the outcome if you get the cove it or if you get krona virus infection because studies have found that the way people eat in the. Us often result in a weakened immune system because sugar process. Carbs will actually slow down How your white blood cells work and that's a serious problem. Yeah and it makes it so important for us to kick that sugar habit. Research has found that sixteen teaspoons of sugar a day reduces the ability of a special kind of white blood cell. Called neutral fills to help your body fight off infections particularly those caused by certain bacteria and viruses to. I know you listeners. Are saying i never eat. Sixteen of sugar is an obscene amount. Well let's take a look at where you might be getting all the hidden sugar and you're gonna find out it's pretty darn easy to get sixteen teaspoons to. Here's a pretty common scenario. You make your daily drive throughout your favorite for your morning. Vanilla lock and then a muffin. Just sons delicious especially with the lot tastes. You grab one of those. while you're vanilla. Lattakia has seven teaspoons of sugar and the muffin contains eight and a half teaspoons. So you're starting your day off with fifteen and a half teaspoons of sugar with just one quick trip through the drive thru. You're already at your sugar limit for the entire day in starting your day like that i can almost guarantee you're gonna eat more sugar right because as we know the more sugar you eat the more sugar as i was introducing myself Earlier i mentioned that i am trying to prevent my children from developing a sugar habit. So here's some interesting news from food business newsletter. In the fall. Pumpkin spice latte as are very popular but they typically do not attract new customers but rather they appeal to the former and existing customers who purchase them more frequently. Pumpkin spice latte today. Lovers tend to be women who are forty five years or older. So what does that say that. Sounds like my demographic will not quite but it says that basically once you have that pumpkin spice latte those are the people that are going to continue to buy that particular item. And they're going to keep coming back for more so i don't want my kids to even taste pumpkin. Spice latte day or a peppermint flavor or the chocolate mocha or any of those types of sweet drinks with fifty grams of carbs or more per per cup. I mean shoot. My kids have enough energy. I certainly don't need to give him that much. Sugar much less a caffeinated burger. I drink so remember. Just sixteen teaspoons of sugar a day. That can slow your immune function. If you have one pumpkin spice latte with twelve and a half teaspoons of sugar and then say like brittany was saying it. Sounds really good to have something with it. Say you decided by a slice of coffee house. Banana nut bread which has thirteen teaspoons of sugar. You have taken in twenty five and a half teaspoons of sugar all before ten. Am in the morning and like we said once you start the day that way it's gonna keep on that's right. The american heart association recommends limiting your sugar intake to only six teaspoons of sugar per day. Just six that is not much at all no and today. We know that over. A third of all calories come from sugar and white flour and our bodies do have great resilience but frankly i bodies are not able to cope with that amount of sugar and flour on a regular basis. And i do think you know most of you know the story about sugar and what it does to us but sometimes you have to hear it many many times for it to actually sink in. So i'm going to repeat what you may have heard before but shit just reminds me just because they've been talking about my kids. You know we as adults were just like kids right. We have to hear the same things over and over and over again before they start trade especially if you love sugar because you don't want to accept the truth now we do what we do we like it. Yeah yeah so but we know sugar gives you that initial high then you crash. Then you crave you want that high again and again over and over happens you're on that roller coaster and sugar stresses your adrenal glands get more anxious moody fatigue sets in your brain. Your body just start to not function as well however. The long term side effects are really the real trouble troublemakers. That recap vic on your health and often times. People don't even know that that's happening inside their body So before you grab one of those sugary treats that you received from a friend during the holidays. Truce and i want to share some of the health problems. You're inviting to come into the first. One is decreased immunity. Which makes you more susceptible to infectious. Bacteria and viral infections. Right and research suggests that that susceptibility happens. Because that sugar will it inhibits vitamin c entering into your white blood cells. So the more sugar you eat the less productive. Your white blood cells are and the more likely you are to get sick. Sugar also directly affects your chocolates ride number it's sugar and processed carbs not fat that stimulate your liver liver's production of triglycerides. So many people really don't realize the triglycerides are linked to stroke two heart disease and of course obesity a usually suggest to my clients. Say look at their checklists number on their blood chemistry panel. Don't just silk the total cholesterol number. Look that that whole breakdown. You'll find the glass rides and your triglycerides level is the fat in your bloodstream. And many experts believe that your triglycerides number is really the best predictor of heart disease and stroke so the number we recommend the optimal number is seventy five or less in. We've had clients with numbers over two thousand bright It's crazy but at the same time i've had clients in a matter of a couple of months drastically reduces so. That's possible we. I just read an email from a listener. Who eats a weight and wellness way and she also exercises daily. She just received her blood chemistry panel and her reckless rides. Were twenty three. Well yeah that is. That's number to strive for as you've just heard and as we all know we have these intellectual reasons in our head based on science for why we should eliminate sugar and carbs from our diet. But it's hard because sugar is sneaky and it finds its way into foods that we wouldn't even consider to be high in sugar for example pizza. Would you consider to be a high sugar food absolutely no because it's savory right it's not sweet. The stock prices of domino's pizza have risen ninety nine percent in the last three years. My gosh and i wonder how much of that was in twenty twenty. Yes but we will talk a little bit more about that when we come back. You are listening to dishing up nutrition. The holidays are over. So perhaps it's time to break your sugar habit because eating excess sugar is certainly worse for you. While we are all experiencing the ongoing cova nineteenth stress the center for disease control and prevention reports that people with underlying health conditions such as type two diabetes heart disease high blood sugar and obesity are at an increased risk for complications. If you become infected with covid nineteen we will share ways that we help clients reduce their sugar consumption with the hope that it will reduce their risk of serious health complications.

Many of my clients are saying why. No i have this in my cupboard. And then i just go and get it and i can't stop you know so that may be a real problem for some people or maybe you need to make some changes about the habit of stopping for that high sugar coffee drink. You know the mocha's or whatever it happens to be the lines at the coffee shops are horrible. These days every time. I drive by one of them. You know this is random but i have noticed. There's one place near me. And on friday nights the line is literally i would say a quarter to a half mile long of cars waiting to get in there and i think there must be something really really drying these people. Yeah i know. Yeah i have one right near me too and i always look at it and and try to see if the cars are. They go out of the parking lot and down the street that long. It's just crazy so some of my clients. Tell me that they really do want to change. But what happens. They really really struggle and somehow they just can't make those changes.

If you wanted to be with the bond does change in that great thing the what is it like being a mom of adult children. It's really hard. Because i avoid the news a lot because i don't want to hear it i do. I void the news because when it's things happen to people all the time and when they're the same age you're on the same life circumstances my children over god i in You know i've been go back to knowing that my children are smart and they love their life and they both are in great places. A Manhunt on the 17th Centurys High Seas
"Steven. Johnson joins US now. He is the author of many books many bestselling books including farsighted. And how we got to now but he joins us to talk about. His latest book is called enemy of all mankind. A true story of piracy power and Histories. First Global Manhunt Steven. Thanks for being here but much having me. There are lots of exciting terms just in your title and subtitle alone. I WANNA start with those even though and we'll talk about this. There's a larger story that you want to tell with this book but let's begin with piracy because that's a fun word. What happened on September Eleventh? Sixteen Ninety Five. There's a kind of interesting bleak poetry to the fact that this happened on September eleventh. Basically the events that are at the center of the book is a clash at sea in the Indian Ocean between pilot. Ship led by a very mysterious figure who would become the most notorious criminal in the world. A guy named Henry Avery and a much larger Indian treasure ship whose name was anglicized as the gun sway and the translation of that into English is excessive treasurer or exceeding treasure. So they were being pretty conspicuous with maiming. This vessel in terms of the of treasurer on board and effectively. These two ships confront each other on September eleven sixty ninety five by all rights. The pirate ship should have been easily overpowered but to incredibly unlikely things happen a cannon onboard board that Indian ship explodes because of some kind of malfunctioning design which basically turns cannon into a bomb when it explodes in so instantly. There's this you know. Many people on Indian ship killed the deck catches on fire. And at the same time. The first cannon fire from the pirate ship manages to have this incredibly lucky shot where they split the main mast of the Indian chip in two which effectively disables at in in the water and so the pirates are able to board the ship they pull off this heist that in today's currency we be would be worth as much as one hundred million dollars so it makes one of the most lucrative crime some in the history of crime and triggers a global crisis that reverberates around the world. Okay before we get to that crisis because you would wonder why one active piracy would do that. Just general picture of the piracy problem at that time. I'm always taken aback by the way that pirates are these cute Nara dwells in children's picture books or like Johnny Depp for many people. But that's not what piracy was back. Then what did it looked like? And was this unusual. Well actually one of the origin points to this project for me was years and years ago. I mean something like fifteen years ago. When my kids were very young we went to Disneyworld and we went on the pirates of the Caribbean ride and it was right after nine eleven and I had this on. I was floating down this little canals. That ride songs are being song and everything. That's very Kelly. The that the pirates were the terrorists of the seventeen hundreds and sixteen hundreds right. They were these terrifying figures would show up out of nowhere and burn your village down and attack. The women and people lived in fear of them. Here was three hundred years later. And it's just a kind of a children's story so they'll link between pirates and terrorism. Which is something that runs kind of subtly through enemy of all mankind actually began on that. Disneyworld ride in some ways. But what's historically really important about pirates at this point in history and one of the reasons why this particular story has so much significance. I think is up until this point. There was a very blurry line in terms of the legitimacy of piracy so there was this other class of occupation. That was called being a a private here. And if you were a privateer from all outside appearances you're a pirate attacking other ships and stealing their treasure and doing all these atrocious things that seat. But as long as you weren't attacking if you were a British privateer as long as you weren't attacking British ships. You're within the zone of and people like Francis. Drake a couple of generations before Henry Avery. When often basically we live the life of piracy but then came back to England and was knighted and bought a giant estate and lived a completely legitimate lifestyle. And so in a sense what happens to this period because of crime for reasons we can get into. It's a turning point where the British crown finally has to take a stand against piracy. They have to basically announced to the world that they're not a nation of pirates the way they've been accused to be. Let's talk about what made this pirate attack so noteworthy. Obviously there was the hall but were there other things that made this a big deal at the time. There are a couple of big ones. I is the other element of the crime. This ship that they attacked was a ship that had been doing business and ports of call like Mocha in the red seat but it was also filled with religious pilgrims coming back from Mecca on a whole other level was kind of a Muslim like religious transport vessel as well and among those pilgrims were a significant number of women women in the Royal Court of Aranda. Who was the great grand mogul of India? The last of the moguls and this was an unusual thing. At the time right you would not see a lot of big vessels in sixteen ninety five. That had a significant number of women on board but there are all these female pilgrims on board and so when the pirates attack the guns way they find these women there and number of the pirates rape the women on board. Some of the women commit suicide jumping overboard to avoid being attacked. And so there's this kind of outbreak of the atrocious sexual violence that happens as part of the crime and of course WORD GETS BACK TO WRONGS. Zab that not only has a hundred million dollars of his assets been stolen but members of his extended royal family have been sexually attacked and violated and this all is crucial in terms of geopolitics. Because it's right at a moment in a time where there's a major economic transition happening in the world. There's a chapter in the book called two kinds of treasure and is basically. There are two different ways of making a fortune that are in conflict with each other here. There's a very old way which is represented by Aurangzeb which is have an autocratic dynasty tax year citizens. Sit On that wealth and pass it onto your descendants. That's what every most of the rich people in the world at this point where people who were members of some kind of royal family that had some kind of dynastic wealth. But there's this new way of making money that has just appearing in it comes in the form of this interesting embryonic. New Organization called the multinational publicly traded corporation and that was the east India company. The east India Company was the first company that actually had publicly traded shares. So that people could. Outsiders could invest in the company in those shares could go up or down in value and for the first time people were making money not just through the prophets of the business but through the increase in value of these publicly traded shares and that turned out to be the future. Right dot is how if you look at the one hundred richest people in the world today. The vast majority of them were people who made money because they had traded shares in a company. They found that their parents found it. So in a sense clash between these two massive economic forces and Henry. Avery in his little pirate ship gets right in the middle of it because once. Iran's UB here's that his money has been stolen in women have been raped he threatened to eject the east India company from India which is the main source of their income. They've been trading CALICO and chinse fabrics and so on and if that had happened if they've been thrown out of India the whole course of the British Empire would have been transformed. It's entirely likely that the British Empire would not have formed in in India in the subsequent decades. If the east India company had been injected. So why wasn't it? Attracted rings up puts a number of the employees of the east India Company under house arrest and threatens to execute them and they began a furious letter writing campaign back to London. Saying we have to find the pirate we have to bring him to justice and we have to announce to the world that we are not going to tolerate piracy anymore or else this whole incredibly lucrative business that the country is increasingly dependent on is just going to disappear and so. That's what triggers this global manhunt really the first one in
Catch a Kite 5
"Hey how you doing? Hey well I guess my closet and I are doing just fine. Thank you glad to hear it as you remember a while back we did a call out. Xm folks in prison to send a snail mail updates about what's happening inside prison during this covy at nineteen pandemic and we finally got some responses. Male takes his time coming out of prison. Yep So let's start with Richard Gross. He's in Pennsylvania at the State Correctional Institute at Phoenix. He writes at first. Corona virus. Didn't mean much here. It dominated the new cycle and fed the jailhouse rumor mills also known as INMATE DOT com. That's what you call prison. Twitter actually died. That's what your other co Holes Roussin Call prison twitter. That's right as you know. Prison do produce a ton of Gasol. Richard slider continues. It got everyone's attention when they cancelled visits in stopped. All are outside volunteers. Coming in as a SOP. They threw us some free phone calls and emails. Next handed up masks made by Pennsylvania Correctional Industries the library limited attendance to only ten people at a time as long as they were wearing their masks. Who Ten people. That's not a lot know. The libraries wanted him spots where you hang out at. It'd be like thirty people forty people in the NBA. People walking back and forth people could be on the computers people reading books so yeah ten people. That's only the legal beagles. Richard goes on to say that things are changing all the time last Sunday. I woke up to find myself block lockdown. They didn't tell us why. I found out from a local radio station that the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections had a case of Corona Virus Phoenix prison. They opened up four cells at a time leading eight guys out for about half an hour to an hour to use the phone or take a shower. Commissary has not been delivered but they do our laundry. They come by a few times a day to take our temperatures. This could last a long time and a sad postscript that since. Richardson is letter. The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections reported that one person incarcerated at that prison where he is did die from complications related to covert nineteen. That is with riches. Right though This thing could last a long time and prisons needs to be prepared for that Another guy who wrote is worried about how his prison is preparing. Tyrone Baker is locked up in Nash Correctional Institution in Nashville North Carolina. Tyrone says the most disturbing administrative action. I'm pertains to social distancing. The prison staff primary concern seems to be separating us from each other staff members of making no effort to distance themselves from US quite the contrary to staff is actually interacting with us more intensively and more extensively than they were prior to Covy at nineteen. They don't seem to realize that no prisoner would get sick with Kobe. Nineteen unless a staff member I brings into disease and that's a really good point. One of the reasons I stopped going in before it became a rural was just that I had no idea if I might be bringing the virus in right I mean prison. Basically sequester from society But they do need outside people to function so as tricky okay. We got one more letter here. This one's from intron price. Who's currently at two? Mocha Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach? Florida. Back when he sent this letter things in his prison were pretty quiet on the covert front of. Oh they've reported more cases since then any case. What about this guy is that he clearly respects lady? So can I please read this one? Go okay. I'm writing to you because my lady is a Superfan of your podcast. And she suggested to me strongly to write you guys. I'm not going to write a book but I can say a few things concerning how it's going. The institution is corona free in the staffer. Doing a good job trying to keep it that way. The VIBE is mellow no one is going crazy. There are people who have loved ones who have contracted the virus and we pray. Console them as much as needed. He wraps up. This letter isn't as informative as I wanted it to be but as a start and my girl will be happy. And that's accounts. Can we give her a shout? We can all right Haley. Thanks for tuning in spreading the word about your hustle and for strongly encouraging. Antara underwrite to us. We just got him some cool points. Unfortunately there are prisons where things are lot harder with covert nineteen and we'll be hearing about some of those places to in later episodes in the meantime those of you inside keep in touch. We WanNa know how you doing in there
