"Continue The Milwaukee health and Economy briefing with Dr John Raymond, the president and CEO of the Medical College of Wisconsin, and Tim Sheehy, the president of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce. Gentlemen, you heard their baseball was the talk. I want to start with you. Dr. Raymond. Is there a scenario Do you believe where there are baseball fans in the stands this season in the next two months at Miller Park. Most baseball fan. I'd sure love to see that and it is certainly possible, but it's going to be a challenge for us. We really don't know what the rise in the number of new cases is going really result in terms of hospitalizations, maybe a month or two down the road. That's something that bears watching, and I think it is possible with appropriate spacing that there could be smaller crowds available and Mitchell Park Usher hopes help. Hey, Tim. Baseball question to you. Baseball start up this Friday. We're all excited about that. What's the value to a city the size of Milwaukee being a major league city? We quantify that you can, and we actually did a study that showed since Miller Park's been open. That the Brewers in Major League baseball have added 2.5 $1,000,000,000 to the economy. And this is the bus $4 dollars that wouldn't have been spent without the Brewers on interestingly enough, the players That play here. Both home and visiting teams helped generate close to $20 million a year in taxes, so it's got an economic importance, but it's also a part of the culture in fabric of the community, and that's important to it gives us a common bond. When I saw you in that beer two years at the news conference yesterday, I saw a gentleman is a beer vendor and the things we don't think about. It mean a guy that relies on that toe help feed his family making 10 or $15,000 a year. Those air the little things that are now very real because of what's happening in the world. They are the beer vendors, The ushers the people giving folks ride to the stadiums, the tailgating purchases that people that go to a bar a restaurant before and then go to the game. Yeah, those air all wrapped up in what we call Major League Baseball. Dr Raymond with where we are with the virus, and as you look at the calendar and how it will unfold on the sports landscape, more likely that there will be fans in the stands. Do you believe in a baseball game in the next two months or at an NFL game, which won't begin for about two months? I'd really hate to speculate. We just don't know. I think in large parts going depend on how many people are willing to continue to wear masks and socially distance those air really important variable that her human variables that we don't necessarily control. We're talking on the Milwaukee health and economy briefing with Dr John Raymond and Tim Sheehy. I wanted to ask you both this before we let you go. I know you're both very busy, and I'll start with you, Tim, the most promising and most challenging news from your vantage point the economy this week. Yeah, The most challenging news has been, you know the job recovery, which has taken the state of Wisconsin under the national average. I think the biggest challenge is you know what lies in front of us. But I will add to that just quickly by saying, I think it's really good news that the city of Milwaukee Is allowing flexibility. It seems two schools that can safely open in teach kids that's important, not only from a teaching standpoint an education standpoint. But it's important for people as they come backto work that there are places for their kids to go to school that are safe. What's the most promising thing? Was that it that that flexibility That was the most promising thing, the possibility that schools are going to have the flexibility to open and we can actually educate kids and get back to it in a safe fashion? Dr Raymond the most promising and challenging health news that you've seen this week, the most promising health news. I think we are making progress and developing new drugs. There was a very preliminary report about using inhaled interfere on beta, and it showed again. Small numbers, though a significant effect in terms of extraditing discharged from the hospital in patients with covert 19 and that's pretty safe drug. It's already been used in multiple sclerosis. That's called F N G 001 So I'm looking forward to hearing more about that, Just in terms of challenges you you already mentioned that we have set records for new cases. And I'm looking at the Wisconsin Hospital Association site, and we have 61 more patients hospitalized this week than last week for covert nine. 18 and we're up about 20 patients, and I see youse and that's a trend that we've seen for the last couple of weeks so that bears from watching the Milwaukee health and Economy briefing features Dr John Raymond, the medical College, Wisconsin president and CEO and president, Tim Sheehy. In the coming weeks. Gentlemen, I hope we can dive into education and a bunch of other things. Thank you so much for spending some time with us. Thanks, Animal..

"Beautiful wings lay. I got you on a sidetrack there. Bring bring me back to how you're identifying these days and again folks were will have all all these resources that alex is going to talk about <hes> what he uses to kind of identify. These banger hammer talk days in the in the show notes. It's but take us back to where you were you. Were talking about where you how do you identify these days and show up an an tolls on the on the good one. I have a pretty pretty simple approach that has developed over the years what the due to identify great days first of all i don't give a i don't ever suppose that i don't give a shit about predictions <hes> longer than than seven days ahead. I don't even look at weather forecasts it for a longer time. <hes> things getting trusting for me especially <hes> five two days ahead and they're really want to point out the perfect service. We have in the alps here. That's called soaring meteo dot c. h. Maybe anyway familiar with that already from the <unk> yeah exactly yeah hey and it gives you. You know it's cheap fast model. It's maybe not very precise but it gives you a very fast look. At the day's quality i think one week go ahead and they have a nice easy coloring scheme. Maybe it takes a still some hours to get into the holiday. How they judge the paragliding lighting quality of those days pay. You have a good initial idea. Hey could be a nice day ahead or not and then of of course with an ever-expanding abilities of windy. You get a lot of those of various other media models. You can't compare with enter inter than i really start to look at <hes> what what kind of air masses coming and especially. What kind of cloud cover can we expect there. That's really where the standout. I also love the meteo grams of meteo blue. They also very nice because you see the cloud base base will be hall of the clouds can come is there precipitation to expect and these other things i have a roughly have on the radar <hes> for the for the five days of days and then but it really stops to look good ben the comes the especially for my area the australian bit your gene students has really nice cloudy overcast forecast and the raincoat forecast <hes> that's pretty pretty accurate and what's also important aspect is when we have especially suddenly conditions you wanna make sure you have the fast asked forecast in mind because sometimes those nikiel models they don't get the daas gift of dust from sahara when suddenly wins and they can make take this. I completely overcast in debt in some of those other models. They just don't consider them so that there is a greek site. It's called skied on. Maybe really put it down in the show noughts known yeah <hes> that at that because you know the semel index will beginning ice on the wings are nice on there. Hey how where is that overcast in coming from and this dampening so much of the solar energy <hes> that we've had already some huge ago a couple of days <hes> where we restored on those on the mountains and just did not know what happens since what what's going on and the condensation you know but what you have with a very fine dust that totally the makes the sky overcast and takes away the the thermal energy also something i always check. You know it's it's. It's very fast. Is it good is it bad is it <hes> but with an orderly the winds we've had this year throughout the season <hes> they're never any issues but still something just make sure because this also can influence research that i make a decision to go flying or not and then <hes> on days ahead one day you had a just look at the the the <unk> orders the thermal off very well judged by these you'll get the cloud-based get a good idea how high the cloud base can be and if there is a development and you can see about all three levels of <unk> very nicely yup organ of course until the end. It's called windy and i want to point out that mitchell park opponent is something that i really use. If it's a humid day flow local prediction of thunderstorms <hes> so in a way you have a hike human human thing <hes> you know it's kind of a lucky game where may be on the storms will happen or not of course there's a tendency where they are more often but i really started to trust into meteo. Powerpoint appalled both those those rather precise locations or areas over the thunderstorms within really and in years tale. You're still totally willing to fly on those days. It's more just a you know you. You'll try to pick a triangle that can work around something like that or is that she's not gay. I'm not going exactly this is for example where did knocked the append second day to allow i on flight because <hes> saw the development happening. Also coupla france were still going for that day to anto tennessee <unk> told them hey guys today was the day tomorrow is gonna be development and this is why i said okay. It's just pointless to fly around found a couple of hours and then just being disappointed that than the only element happens so we went up to the northern slug what model you know in the in the states we use xy skies lot which is kinda like media blue or pair of pants <hes> in the in the past <hes> it has been very inaccurate in europe because they're in europe. He only had jeff s but now he has <hes> the s. w. f. e. c. m. w. f. and the icon model. Which models are you really putting more weight in in these days of a totally forgot mansion exc- skies look there from the beginning and still use it and especially when you look at the blog entries these these other screen shots. I take and it's really a basis for decision because i like the low wind. They always forecast because always get the other win forecasts. You may be would not go fly. The always say nasty something in the beans of the roads families so so i still with old chief has model <hes> i still laugh the skies first of all. It costs almost nothing for what you get you get. The wins wins in a very nice nah. I think three hundred meter level leah and they they are everage and this is what i'm anyway mostly interested in what is the average because i know whenever there is there is a spine the distant blown over from the bank will be <hes> some conditions there in anything anything but still getting an idea of the old whirlwind employed develops xy sky is totally one of the main especially when it comes to wink decisions while the main resources use interesting alex how much.

So it doesn't matter. I'm not gonna go to Marlins park just to eat bean show factory because I can do that factory. And I don't have to pay for the name of the stadium. Honestly, I wanted to be insured Mitchell park. I know what you mean. It's hard for franchise to survive in terms of fiscally. It's hard for them to survive in the face of twenty years of losing or a really long sustained period. The Marlins actually haven't had twenty years of losing. There were quite all right in the mid two thousand but they had their other issues. But when I was interning for the Panthers during a lockout, Michael your Mark was turning stuff over and selling things like crazy. You can't have just bad s sales people. I mean look at look at seven ninety survived. I mean, su- God's was taking all sorts of deals even though like early on it probably shouldn't have. So there there are ways around it and Bauer certainly looked the part. I can't wait for David Samson and join us because I'm sure you know, some sort of inside information on what's happened here. And he wouldn't be he won't hesitate at all to tell us. He's he's definitely the fair. One to talk on this. And also ask them what what what the deal is with Michael hill. Because I mean, he didn't he do these trades? Who wasn't any do the Brinson deal? Who was it? Was it David Samson made the joke that he had pictures? Didn't we ask somebody about wise, Michael hill still there? He must have pictures. Wasn't that the joke? Someone may not real though. Oh, it's a joke. But that's like the his point was is. I have no idea. Why is there? It's baffling. It is baffling given that, you know, this organization had I mean kids have executives called Larry buying fest. Uncle Larry like he was family to that team. And they got rid of it would happen. The Larry by says what happened to Larry festive? What had happened to Randy fund? Yeah. What happened rainy fund? I think I think Randy fund didn't want to be working with Riley anymore. Because there was there were some issues over not having any real power by festival. So I think what it is. But I I have not talked. I've literally just overheard that in a couple of places I haven't confirmed that please try to find out what had happened to Randy fund in Michael. And Michael Hill's defense, though, this team has had acquired drafted talent throughout the years. It's not like a hundred and sixty two draft rounds. I I'd hope to God that was saying some Mike Michael hill is not like terrible at evaluating talent that we just haven't been able to keep any aren't these trades port of evaluating who knows who's really making all the decisions on these traits. Well, that's the thing. We're sort of puzzled as soo- who's making the decision. So it really makes it difficult to blame somebody. So I guess when they fire Michael hill as a as a sort of sacrifice to the masses. Then I guess we'll just play Michael hill. We'll take the word for or could it be that the very beginning. This. They told Jeter, hey, you should keep someone around to be a fog like what's more realistic of the two things. I just said that they actually respect it. Look, it might not have been pretty here throughout the years. But this guy knows and can evaluate talent or jeeter. You're going to need a fog. I if it has to be one of those two things I imagine that being like the closed door meetings at Loria and Samson had would Geeta were Jeter s so any sort of advice for me on the way out. Yeah, you're gonna need a fall guy. In fact, you're going to need several I loved that around. I love that as his business card instead of, you know, general manager president, just Michael hill. Fall got twenty seventeen July twenty seventeen he got a contract extension through twenty twenty. So I mean,.

"Even a larger convention center. Does anyone have an appetite for that the Milwaukee business journal's rich Kirch around that idea up the municipal flake Lewisham heavies around town. He joins us live on WGM Jake, boarding rich morning. So this idea actually had been brought up by some municipal leaders not too long ago. But now you're saying nobody wants this thing the linger anymore. Yeah. That really seems to be the case it was actually people in the business community as well as some other sort of civic leaders metropolitan association, Milwaukee association commerce, misery two years ago. You know, we're we're talking about anything from in. This just the Milwaukee county. The cats will go away in the other four counties. But yeah. Milwaukee county seem to have the greatest needs. So so why not do something there? But yeah, when I when I checked around now with with the you know with that tax sunset insight. I it seems like there's there's just not the the energy or the will there to to try to push that through rich. You have in your article again. And as gene mentioned to the Milwaukee public museum is in desperate need of of new home. The Mitchell park domes are falling apart. Do we do? They have any ideas on how we can start addressing some of these things. The short answer is no the other answer is I, you know, not Milwaukee county government leaders tiny executive Abeille, the Milwaukee county board, of course, are well aware that they need to do something they they just finished a task force. And and, you know, a documented in February saying, you know, they call it a fair deal for no Joaquin county. They're trying to figure this out. They want to get more state aid a back they say the county's paying more into the states and it's getting back by. But there there's no specific plan. They they haven't ruled out some kind of sales tax Milwaukee county itself. Already is maxed out with a half cent sales tax. We're live with the Milwaukee. Business journal's rich Kirch in on WTMJ. We had the mirror on earlier, and he mentioned are strange relationship with Madison from over the years. Maybe now, do you think with a democratic governor and legislature that's half democratic maybe that olives gonna come out of the journey more revenue will come Milwaukee's way? There's a lot of money in there for projects in Milwaukee at UW on campus. Medical College of Wisconsin. A new state office building security tension facility other state or w system functions. So there's no doubt. The governor's office is is more friendly than Milwaukee, Milwaukee county democratic strongholds, but the legislature still is controlled by the Republicans. So there's going to be a lot of back and forth to say, the least best dating story from the or the Milwaukee business journal's rich Christian on WTMJ about extending perhaps that Miller park. "Well, it really does all come down to access more than forty million Americans. Do not have access to high quality food and farmers markets are one of the ways to respond to that problem. And they're not as expensive to operate as a grocery store. They also confer benefits on the shoppers and vendors, so farmers markets. Research shows that farmers markets lead directly to increase produce consumption. And of course, there is also other was discussing earlier there the social interaction. And the community building that takes place at farmers markets is something that we really believe everybody has a right to so light. You like Heather I believe that everybody has a right to good food. And that's why we have strategically, you know, targeted neighborhoods, and our neighbors and communities that do not typically have as much access to healthy food. So Fandi is a nationally recognized leader in connecting with low income consumers through our snap e-bt program. And what that is is basically it's a program that allows people to use their federal nutrition benefits snap AK foodshare, aka food stamps at the farmer's market. This is really important in Milwaukee's in our side. Because our neighbors have more than fifty six percent are participating in the snap program. So it's been a really important way to to. Serve the community by allowing people to use those federal nutrition benefits at the market. We additionally raise funds to double up those benefits. So you know, one dollar becomes too for more, fruits and vegetables. That's a nice way to to convey the importance of healthy eating. I think if they know that they're they're program, whether it's food stamps or whatever the snap program when he said if they can use them there, then why wouldn't they if they know that they're getting healthy foods as opposed to going to the box MAC and cheese at the pick and save, and you know, because it's cheap. And it's on their list of foods that they can get knowing that they can use these dollars. If you will at the at the farmer's market scrap. Well, let's talk about the farmer's market. Specifically, there's so many things I think everybody should know about this. I was not aware when when Heather I started telling me about all the ways that you're impacting the community with the healthy foods. I think it's important that our listeners understand that. So let's let's talk about the farmer's market specifically. Well, so in addition to the snap program. In addition to our double up snap and wick matching program we also work with local healthcare systems to implement what we call a fruit and vegetable prescription program, so people go to their doctor. They get a prescription that they can then bring to the farmers market, and they turn that in into coupons that can be spent on fruits and vegetables, it's incredibly popular. And we're trying to figure out a way to spread that two more healthcare systems and more farmers markets across the region. You know, finding farmers market was our first market, and we have since grown to operate three farmers markets. So a number of years ago, we opened up the funding market at schlitz park, which was another opportunity for farmers to, you know, have make more money basically to to sell to another community. Downtown right now, let's park and then in two thousand fifteen we took over operations in the Milwaukee winner farmers market. So that's why we're able to say that we have more than one hundred farmers markets that we operate a year that's more than any other organization in the state of Wisconsin. And the Wisconsin farmers market. That's the one at the domes. Yup. The Milwaukee winner farmers market is at the Mitchell park domes greenhouse annex every Saturday from ADM to noon, and that goes from now through March through the end of March and you'll see fresh produce every single week of the year because our farmers there. They've invested in season extension and storage techniques or indoor growing methods. So you can find not just you know, cold-storage root vegetables, but you can find fresh greens really any in the air. Sometimes they're just micro greens. Well, that's interesting though, because I had visited a farmer's market this last weekend. And my thought was there's no way. I'm gonna find fresh fruits and vegetables, and this particular one that I went to had a mix of they had some dairy represented there and some meat, but they also had like local artisans that were selling different things that really wasn't what I had expected. It was still decent. But it wasn't what I expected so knowing that the one at the domes or actually the schlitz park one you can get fresh fruits and vegetables. I think that's that's. I think people would need to to be aware of that. Yeah. Absolutely. I invite people to come on down. You know, the that market really created an avenue for farmers to make money in the winter. And so it's a win win. It's a win win. And so those farmers and vendors have been able to invest in these season extension techniques that allow them to bring fresh produce to the market. We also have cheese and meat and bakeries and hot food vendors. What's your favorite hot food vendor? Say it's the it's the soup. It's from Wisconsin soup. No, the the soup that Jamie. Oh cafe cafe. So you can go there for lunch. You get there before and and do. Okay. Get there before noon. Okay. And it's really multicultural too. When you think about it? There's there's from the prepared food side at the domes vocation, there's empanadas, and there's you know, there's barbecue waffles. Okay. Now, you're making me hungry. Yeah. Okay. Well, what about this Fandi farm project? That's you know, an organization that was started to operate a farmer's market. When you start a farm what tell us about that. So what happened is back in two thousand eight and two thousand and nine we started seeing farmers dropping out of the founding farmers market. And we couldn't have that. Because we needed to have a long-term supply of produce to offer to our neighborhood and our shoppers. And so when we started researching by the farmers were dropping out of farming. We realized it wasn't because they are ready to retire. It was because they didn't have access to land, or at least they didn't have access to long-term affordable quality, Lisa's and really that in part is because most of our farmers are among American refugees. And so, you know, they are people who have not historically owned their own farms and been living on handshake leases. So we started the farm and last year was our most impactful year yet thirty eight. Twenty-six farm families and a real demand for us to continue growing that project. There are a lot of people who want to be farmers. They really believe and you know, the lifestyle they really believe and making sure that fresh produce is available Turk munity, and I would add into you know, when I am on the at the markets, and I get to visit and talk with the farmers. You know, having those hundred markets around the year gives them that option of really selling it as close to harvest as possible when we've got mid week and multiple days on the weekends where they can sell what they've harvested, and that's going to help them to want to invest in all the different ways to make farming more efficient for themselves. And then also provides for the shoppers for for us founding avid fans, you know, really that option to get that more diverse vegetables across culture and. Cross different types of farming. And and cultural food that's a really great point. I mean, that's one of my favorite things about the founding farmers market in particular earlier, I mentioned that we have a lot of new refugees and emigrants who seek out the market even if they don't live in the neighborhood because they're such a diverse array of produce one August couple of years ago. I counted thirteen varieties of eggplant on one single day. From the size of cherry tomato to you know, the big globe. Well, well, and I think the education around the food is interesting because I understand you have something called healthy, food, advocacy. I had no idea that there were that many different versions of of eggplant, or you know, now, I can maybe increase my my my recipes that call for that. But what about this healthy food, advocacy, where you we educate the people well at market, we do cooking demos, and we also work with a number of community partners who bring in education and resources that benefit the community, and why more widely than that, our advocacy is about working with community partners across the region to try and connect more of our local farmers markets with more of the low income community members and their own neighborhoods and communities, and so we're offering technical assistance and training and sharing. Some of the lessons learned at the founding farmer's market with these other markets that also really believe that everybody deserves access to good food. And so they want to make sure that they're serving their low income neighbors. Well, well, there's certainly a lot of information here to to learn about, and so we're not able to cover everything that we that. We would like to talk about. But I think it's important for people to know that their there's a website that they can visit to get more information..
