"Kensho, John Kobal and Ken Shampoo. Okay, if I Answers. 40 live everywhere in the I Heart radio Afghan is away today We're going to be following this Venice boardwalk cleanup extremely closely. What the sheriff is doing. Because he has interviewed over 220 people on the boardwalk and by my count about about 90, or so of them have been rear sight either. Only five C. This was frustrated only two in mental health programs in three in substance abuse programs. And you know, all research has indicated nearly everybody living out there has mental health or substance abuse issues. However, he got 20 people placed in a shelter Another 25 or reunited or going to be reunited with family and friends. 40 r. Gest, Uh, no mats. Truly transients. They just moved from place to place young hippie types and then 18 of them already have shelter. They have bridge housing, but they like to spend a lot of time on the beach boardwalk cause Mike Bonin lets them And that that smells the number. And I guess others are just going to wander off. They're going to be forced to wander off at least temporarily, because the city is now going over the next say the city has now responded to Vienna waiver. And this shows you the hypocrisy in the idiocy of Bannon and everybody else all the other officials that attended that press conference the other day, denouncing the getaway. Eva Sheila, Kill the idiot L. A County supervisor George Gaskell. In the Idiot district attorney. They're all denouncing what Vienna waiver was doing. Nobody paid attention to their stupid news conference. They were Bonnin realizes he's sinking fast. I mean, he was practically crying yesterday at the City Council meeting. So now what are they doing? They're cleaning it up the next five Fridays. They're going to clean up five sections of the boardwalk. Everyone's got to pack up and go or your stuff gets packed up and put in a storage bin for 90 days downtown, and you got to go get it. The final piece to this is having l A P D keep anybody from camping there period, which is what they're doing. An echo Park Lake. For all the times these politicians claim. It's a very complicated problem. You know it, it defies simple solutions. Mitchell Farrell, LAPD solve the problem at Echo Park Lake. They interviewed everybody. Gave them their options cleared out the park. Put up fencing while they cleaned up. What was it? Well, Jeez, I forgot. What was it? Many tons of garbage. 40 tons of got 40 tons of garbage. Then £10 and pounds of fecal waste. Needles hundreds of needles. I mean, they cleaned it up, and now they simply have l A P. D. On patrol in Echo Park Lake. Telling Anybody who puts up a tent? No. You just say no. Because when that what? Even the homeless When they hear. No, you can't stay here. They get up and they go. They want to be left alone. Overwhelmingly, they want to be left alone. They don't want the police hounding them or anybody else. They want to snort their bath, inject their heroin, smoke their pot, drink their beer. Which that that's what you want to do. You just got to go somewhere out away from the rest of us. You don't often often what's what's not covered in the media. Is the pain that people have been going through the just the aggravation, the irritation the danger. I want to read part of an email that appeared in the Venice Current, which is a local West side. News site. And this woman lives in Mar Vista. And she was a really compelling email. And Um on December 2nd. This woman. Heard that a transient had murdered her neighbor. And this woman from our vista cried for most of the day. Then she emailed Mike Bonbons office for the 25th time. Now she's emailed him again. After learning about the, uh Leaked memo written by the deputy district director, the story we covered earlier this week, Heather Levine Adam Levine. Excuse me, the one who was complaining about the one homeless guy who's been sleeping for two months in front of Her office. And she wrote a memo to other people in city government said. Well, what can we do about this guy? And I didn't want to step over him anymore, and it didn't want to hear him yelling during the day, distracting him. Carson is a member of the Democratic Socialist Group. Anyway, that the, uh The neighbor of the woman who was murdered. Councilman bonded. When I initially read the leaked email written by your deputy district director My first reaction was to cackle out loud. You just cannot script that kind of irony. When I watched the Fox 11 news segment that shed more light Hannah on the person Hanna sought to remove. I was incensed. Because you remember when the reporter read the email allowed to this, um, housed man. The man was so embarrassed to hear that he was bothering people that he moved his belongings immediately. And she's being sarcastic here, she writes. I really can't imagine what kind of egregious disruption this one seemingly conscientious, um, housed man could have caused but I recognize there could be more to the story. So I wanted to ask Hannah some questions for clarification. Did he push? None housed woman up against the wall of the office and beat her mercilessly. Because that's something I witnessed right outside my home. Did he go on record during an NBC streets of shame segment, claiming he was a struggling addict with violent anger issues only later to kill an elderly man in broad daylight while stealing his bicycle. Because that was someone who hung out my alley for years on end. Did he approach you asking for somewhere to hang out Only the chase you to your vehicle pound on your driver's side window and scream at you when you at random. Because that's what happened to me on the street by my house. Did he remove his pants have explosive diarrhea all over the walls of your office. Because that happens all over my home an alley on a regular basis. There's actually a giant black desiccated log of feces right outside my home as I type this You should get a used heroin needle stuck in the side of your shoe as you walk to or from the office because that happened to my husband just last month. That gang members begun warring over who sells drugs to this unhappiest person and started tagging war all over your office because that happened in my alley. The subject of gang members. Have there been any altercations around your office again? She's referencing Hannah Bonds assistant because I've had gang members verbally fighting in my alley for hours, threatening to shank one another underneath my bedroom window. Did you look out your office window to see a corpse with a heroin needles sticking out of his body because I have twice There's been multiple overdoses in Miami in my alley, too. To which my husband and I were first responders. Did he pass out on your planter in a heroin stupor, nearly naked with his Penis exposed. Because I know how that goes. Did he have such an intense episode of psychosis that he hallucinated screamed awful things at the top of his lungs fought the air spoken voices that resembled demonic possession because that has been pretty much on a constant loop in my alley since 2018 He blatantly smoke meth or inject heroin because that happens just as frequently in my alley as the episodes of psychosis. And there's more. I think you get the idea. This is what the woman in Mar Vista has to put up with. And then when she saw the report And Hannah Levin pissed off about the one homeless guy sleeping in front of Hannah's office. And can't somebody do something in the city to remove them? You imagine? Fury that this Marvis to woman felt I think you can Just heard part of re mail. John and can codify Deborah Marquez News. Cal Fires is £80,000 of illegal fireworks.

"We are live everywhere in the I heart radio app Ever heard of that Deborah Martin? I have not its breakthrough. Oh, it is. Yeah. We have an app to know. Mm hmm. All right. Everybody has it happens your phone full of that. You know what? I really don't have a lot. No, I try to. Yeah, I thought you would. Because you like to stay connected. Everything. Yeah. You probably have an app for every disaster That could happen. I didn't know me at the earthquake app. Yeah, that's about it. I do have the earthquake app for sure. You don't have a jolt over the weekend. Friday night 8 27 where most of each got a little 2.9. Yeah, it was pretty exciting. Were you scared? No. I was like you liked it. It was very quick five seconds. But I said that that's an earthquake. And then when I thought of it later, I looked it up. I was watching some show. So he said. A high was right. But I always go. Is it here? Is it like 50 miles away? We're just getting a little end of it. So It was local but very small. We're gonna well A couple of things have popped up in the news. This afternoon. New York City Hundreds of alleged looters and rioters, who were arrested last year in the protests following the death of George Floyd are seeing their charges dropped. Portland is on a PR campaign to get you to come back there after that city has been devastated by rioters and all sorts of unrest for the past a year or so, and it takes us to the problem with the homeless. Apparently a story that popped up last week is that 179 people who were arrested during the Echo Park Lake homeless encampment protests then they're going to be charged either. So, basically the crowd that is in favor of what you're protesting aren't going to charge you if you cause any problems, any damage, resist arrest anything like that? Speaking of Echo Park link, We played some audio last week from the LAPD chief Charlie Moore. He was asked by Channel seven about a couple of things the homeless in Venice and share of Vienna waiver. Sending in deputies there to see what they could do to clear out the encampments there. And then he was asked about Echo Park Lake, which was shut down and eventually cleaned up. A lot of trash reopened about a month ago was just before Memorial Day weekend and more was sounding like we're gonna make sure that new tense new encampments don't pop up so We don't trust that we're bringing on Riley Montgomery, who lives in Echo Park Lake was on our show a number of times before the Echo Park Lake encampment was cleared out and We look to him for the truth. Welcome back to the show, Riley. I can. Thanks for having me back on the show. I really appreciate it. What can you tell us about the Echo Park Lake today? Well right now, the parks looking really clean. You know, families are enjoying it. They're street vendors out there. It's looking like it did when it was renovated in 2013. But there's been a lot of attempts from Almost people trying to get back into the park and what I what I can mention. Is that right now there's temporary fencing around the perimeter of the lake with about four entrances. Um and that has been the number one thing that has been Helping keep homeless people from reforming large encampments at the lake. I know people. I have inside information that that has been the number one thing that has helped keep the park safe like it is currently because there's fencing. Yes, because it allows the LAPD and the park rangers to do their job easier, and it allows them to enforce that. And if someone does show up with the tent, they just send out urban alchemy and they give them a housing offer, and they usually accept it. Is it? How big offense is it? I mean how protective visit Well right now it's there's a temporary chain link fence, and Mitchell Carol hasn't said how long that temporary offense is going to be up, but it surrounds the entire park. And so right now what? Uh what neighbors myself and other neighbors that live around the park are trying to do is we're trying to get support for a permanent type of fence. That would surround the park. That would be like what other parts in L A has like Hollywood Reservoir Parks over like meadows, Mr. Her most unit at Park Chateau part They all have fences around them and the one thing you'll see with all of those parks, no homeless encampments. Who knew? I mean, we've always been told when it comes to the border that fences and barriers don't work. Apparently they work with the homeless, huh? Well, there's a you'll notice every rich politician in L. A has a fence around their house and that deters people from coming in. Do you know if it's a lot of people trying, is it? The activists? Is it the same people that live there? It hasn't been much because so many of the people that were at the Lakers and housed so but there's still people that expect that they should be able to live at the park that it should be. It should just be a given because it's been allowed to take place for so long. Do you think this is something that should be duplicated around LA? I mean, we're only a month into re opening the park, but it's still holding And looking pretty good. I mean, how how much of an LAPD presence is there? There's not a huge LAPD presence. There's Park Rangers and a few officers that patrol around the park and it doesn't take much It just takes. It's just L A so big and the officers are being deployed from so many other areas. But I think that this is something that could be duplicated in other areas. If council members are willing to do it, I know Mike Bonin said. This is a quote from him. Even if I were inclined to do an echo Park style cleanup, sensing our Venice speech would be really hard. So you know about some council members that might just be too hard to do. Yeah, but that's a cop out because there's other things you can do with Venice Beach and and that begins with just clearing it out. It's not necessarily that everybody would come back in to the place. But these parts these park rangers, were they there before all this got crazy. This is no. There were some Rangers, but they were. They were completely hobbled in what they were able to do because they were to attempt to do anything or even do any outreach attempts. Activists would surround them and harass them, and you've got the same. You've got the same usual characters rich kids jet barrier from Silver Lake. Kelvin Martinez runs the Cape Town for all Twitter. He's always up there, with the megaphone shouting at residents. So it was really difficult for them before and now they have the ability to enforce things. By the way. Do you have any comment on the fact that the 179 people arrested during the protests over closing Echo Park Lake for the cleanup? They all won't be charged. I mean, the city attorney is making it sound like it was all peaceful. It got pretty ugly that night. Yeah, I can't say I'm surprised the city's just scared of lawsuits. That's all it is, Um, they know that there were crimes committed. They know that they were shining high powered flashlights in the police's space and actively trying to create aggression. But The city knows that they can't win those lawsuits. So, yeah. So I get it, But I don't approve. But you know, I get it though. All right, Riley. Well, we're counting on you for these updates every now and then. To make sure that I say one more thing. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I just wanted to say if you live in CD 13 or near it, uh, in Mitchell Farrell's district or near it, It would be awesome. If you support keeping parks safe for families and you support a permanent fence around Echo Park Lake. Col. Mitchell Farrell's office telling you support the idea, 2132 Oh 7315. If you call in telling you support it overwhelmed activists trying to call in who don't even live in the neighborhood. Um then maybe something could happen and we could keep the park this way. Give the number again. 2132073015. Alright, Riley. Good work, and I hope you get the permanent fence. Appreciate it. I really appreciate that. You guys have a good day. Riley Montgomery's residents of Echo Park Lake A man that just like many people who live there wanna park that exists for all of the public to enjoy not to be overrun by homeless encampments, but, um They, by the way, this story in city news about these protesters not being charged, once again includes the description. Uh, it was a supportive community had a vegetable garden working showers and shared kitchen. All right. This is what the protesters are saying. However, the paragraph before says the park had to undergo $600,000 worth of cleaning and repairs and all that many tons of trash. We talked about that they had to haul out of there. Yeah, I'm sure. It's just a wonderful, sweet little community like any other. Why would you want to destroy it?.

A City Councilman Joe Buscaino. Was there a campaign appearance. He's running for mayor, and they had to apprehend a woman with a knife. Well, more than one listener has sent us an UPDATE, which includes a photo. At 7 30 PM the homeless woman who tried to attack Joe Buscaino where the knife is back out on the boardwalk. Uh, thanks, Mike bonding. And thanks Uh, l. A district attorney's office for the progressive destruction of Los Angeles. So Or would that be the cities? I don't know. Who would have handled that case Attorney valet of the L A. D a. I guess. Because involved the knife. I read everyone one news report. That she was issuing threats. So she could carry a six inch knife issue Threats l, A police captain got his hand all cut up, and that's it. Like it never happened. You know, we're in a no bail. No jail situation now, anyway, Do you really think they were going to hold her for more than an hour? You don't step into any any, but here she is. In the photo. She's flopped down on the pavement holding a box or a bag. Some guy next door is crouched over eating something that debris everywhere. It's disgusting. What the hell? Uh, you know, even five years ago, I couldn't imagine this. No, This is a really upside down world. We're in now, and she's a young girl. Read one report said. She's cause she's from Oregon, right. He's 19 from Portland. Somebody get her Mom and dad down here. Was she an antifa or an anarchist up there, Which he put? Uh, I don't know. Maybe important. Michigan's that were going on. Portland was too crazy for no. But seriously, everybody everybody goes. We got to be compassionate. Compassionate thing to do is to call it for parents. Get them to come down here and put it in the back of a car and take her to a treatment center. She's clearly a drug addict, and she's probably got some severe mental disorder. So why wouldn't you do that? Instead, you put her back out on the boardwalk and she claimed, and she might be telling the truth. She's got the knife so she doesn't get raped. Which means she's already may have got raped by all those dirtbags that live on the boardwalk. What are the infamous mental health hold laws? I mean, she's holding a knife. She could be a danger to herself and others. Wouldn't that give them the chance? At least hold on to her for a couple of days. 72 hours. They don't even do that. No, no. Yeah, They're all compassionate. Right? All these progressives. All these phony thank progressives not compassionate at all. Poor girl was suffering there. Probably has been the sexually attacked clearly is out of her mind has a horrible drug problem. Well, what What? What is everybody doing? Uh, now on another part of town dealing with the homeless. We got word and we will talk at four o'clock to one of the organizers behind the recall attempt. Against L. A City Councilwoman Nichia Ramen. We talked about her concerning a couple of things. In Los Phyllis. There was a big homeless encampment. It's being run by gang members. Really horrible and dangerous. And then we had that Griffith Park story last week, where one of the guys who was camping an Echo Park Lake that's part of Mitchell Farrell's district. Decided when he finally got evicted. He was one of the last holdouts to head over to Griffith Park and plant the flag. And the Park Rangers there said No, you're not going to do that. And basically what that guy was saying was, Oh, well, Cynthia Rahman's office said. This is this was okay. And of course, they tried to walk back That guy's statement. But except he's probably telling the truth. And what he ran into. Is that the park Rangers don't answer to Nicaea Rahman. They may have neutered LAPD, but Ramen and Bonnin cannot neuter the sheriff. And cannot neuter the park Rangers. They get to operate independently. Apparently, the paperwork's delivered today we're going to be talking after four o'clock to Alison B. Cohen, the lead proponent. But she was served this morning with a notice of intent to recall. Some boy, we get the bonding thing going. We will have four recalls going at once, won't we? Oh, this This is the big flush. It has to happen. I have been promoting the big flesh for many years, and this is what it is. It's like you remove all these bastards. Right there damaging. They're dangerous. They're making life miserable for everybody. Who needs them? I don't understand. Why would anybody be attached to any of these people? Why would you want people who promote a filth and drug addiction and needles and feces? What? What would you who needs Who needs Nidia Ramon and Mike Bonnin? My God because Channel seven ran another story. Speaking of Rahman's district that apparently there's a huge homeless encampment, which has taken over a pedestrian tunnel. In the neighborhood of low skill. It's It's one of those underground pedestrian tunnels, so you avoid crossing the street. It's under the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and New Hampshire Street near Los Phyllis Elementary School. Neighborhood, residents say that's packed with the homeless, their belongings. It poses a serious safety problem. Parents and Children now rely on a crossing guard to cross the busy boulevard rather than take the pedestrian tunnel they used to use this. So the kids could get to school safely and not have to cross the street. What do we have? Audio of Oh, that's we don't have time. Tell them we don't have time. It wasn't on the cut sheet and we don't have time because it's like three minutes. It's a channel seven story quote. We've had reports of narcotics being made down below people actually trying to cook inside the tunnel trying to heat during the cold with open flames God Yeah, You've got a fire going in the tunnel, and that's where kids are supposed to go to school. Except the schools have been closed for a year and a half. Well, so there's that story. LAPD claims that they've tried to lock the tunnel, but the people cut the locks. And slide to the chain link fencing. Well, the thing is to if you lock off the tunnel, then the people can't use it either. You know, Children. Why don't Why don't you? Why don't you guard the tunnel? Or come up with the lock that they can't cut If you put up a cheap fence and the cheap block, Of course it's going to be cut, so don't do that. But I have a security guard to shoo away the homeless every day and every night, start arresting them and putting them in jail for a while, and they'll stop living in there. By the way, this tunnel is just a block west of the gang encampment at Bere Endo Street. Yeah, so you know what's going on here? This is Nidia Rahman's district. Anthea Rahman thinks a school crossing tunnel meant for Children should be turned over. To a drug infested homeless gang. That's Nichia Rahman's family values there. Oh, my God. You You should recall her in a day. Well, the website it's up. Recall rahman dot org. That's recall Rahman. It's called R A m a n dot org will be talking. We've talked to her before. Alison B. Cohen at 405 is really good, and I feel confident that she's on top of this. It could move somewhere more coming up. Johnny Kidd KF I Deborah Marquez. If only joe biden had done that. I think people would have gotten in line a lot sooner to get vaccinated saying you know what here burn the mask. This is what you get if you if you get vaccinated. Now all sorts of crazy lotteries. Did you read what. They're doing in west virginia in west. Virginia i think i did. It's the only place. Yes yes you get put in a lottery for guns accustomed truck a college education in lifetime fishing and hunting license and like twenty-five trips to state parks. That's cool that's might be science one you have to bryant people jen. I know i know it drives. I seriously i've just about west. Virginia because it drives me nuts that were entering people into lottery about their health. Look if people want to get the vaccine. God love you go out there and get the vaccine if it makes you feel safe if you don't want to get the vaccine. You shouldn't harassed for not getting the vaccine and then the gray area with people like us. Ed where we have natural immunity and antibodies because we have recovered from covid nineteen. What are we supposed to do. Are we not going to be allowed to cruise or travel. Because we don't have a vaccine card We have better immunity than the people with the vaccines. That's just a a a scientific fact. Okay let's talk about what's going california's parks what's going on with the homeless people. Are they finally clamping down. What's going on jennifer. They're not finally clamping down. But there's a park near dodger stadium. It's called park and this was. We might have talked about it here a few months ago. They were trying to clear the homeless people out of that park so that they could do renovations and clean the park up now. That sounds good right. A democrat city councilman is behind it. He says this is all about improving the park making it nice for families but the activists for the un housed aka the homeless. Get a little crazy and they say even though you're handing the homeless a hotel room key to go stay in while they clean up the park. that this is not right that they can't move them from their home which they've taken over as this park. Well they finally get them out. They get the police involved. They clean up the park. They go to reopen it. And the activists are back on the doorstep of this city councilman mitchell farrell. Who's no great guy. He's been hard on the nra all these things. he's not great he's a democrat. Who has done some pretty liberal things. But my question is why is the community. Why are activists for the house upset about cleaning up the park. They took out. They found guns knives syringes and seven hundred pounds of human waste. Who in their right mind is going to be out there. Upset that you remove seven hundred pounds of waste human waste biological ways from a park. I mean i would stick that on the doorstep of any one of those activism if you like it so much. here's your own at home version. One of these people think it's good for the homeless to be homeless. I what's the logic. It's the une house now that they have a right to be wherever they want to be. Very hippy dippy. And they're even looking at an imagine. This empty retail stores empty shopping malls all throughout california because of the year-long closure and the pandemic they're now looking at making that low income housing for the homeless. Now they're not just putting up temporary things they're looking at putting up permanent low income housing in places where all the shopping malls are. Well that's fantastic for the neighborhood. Who are now going to deal with. Crime on the rise spiralling property values all of these things that make no sense when we could really be dealing with the core issue of homelessness which is not about not having enough structures or roofs over people's head. It's about dealing with mental illness and drug addiction and most oftentimes both of those things. We whoever you are. I don't care who you voted for. We are doing the greatest disservice. We are being inhuman by.

"What do we have any news. What bad things have happened. Shifting into the into the bad murders share. I think. I got weirdly busy with work with nothing to show for it last week. A little additional for nothing. I could talk about mostly just busy however the one thing that was on my brain is the thing i've talked about a little bit before. Which is that fucking echo. Park lake was opened up again by fucking mitchell farrell and it is like some truly fascist. Shit there's cops everywhere cop cars drive on the path and it has remained fenced off with like checkpoints essentially inbetween. It's just really disgusting. And the violent displacement of people more than ever has been you know. It's wholly unnecessary. Because they didn't do jack shit to clean up the park and like there was no need to perpetrate violence and literal literal crimes. That state people would be tried at the hague for their arresting journalists legal aid anyway. I don't know as not only la centric but echo park centric and disgusting. It's real disgusting watching echo park kind of be open in such a gross wave. That's the thing that was in my face this week. Yeah i saw some of that too. And i'm wondering if if those sweeps that the cops do specifically there in echo park are just prompted by themselves deciding to do it or is it the case of sometimes residents calling the police for whatever reason either because they don't want the quote nuisance of an unhealthy person near their house or do they think they're helping something i mean while i suspect it's both it's sort of next door like liberal but racist set like. Oh oh my stars but also like i think it was town for all posted video of like they had police cadets handing out like flyers about how much crime there is an echo park except any actual data on them right there so so they are trying to create a culture that you know like like all on things like sort of fear mongering that there's so much crime medico park. I tweeted this. And it is one hundred percent true i would echo park lake frequently during the pandemic. It's my house if something place to walk around and literally in the last eighteen months i witnessed so much crime there and literally every single piece of it was committed by the lapd. It's disgusting So i don't know what to say other than like fuck mitchell farrell but also an i will say we had a tiny before you started some folks from no olympics. La before was on. Yeah i actually. I don't remember who all was on. But you know. I think. I think i didn't process that. They were saying they were on. But now i'm sort of have seen it and maybe it's on me for being so late to the game on this but this is what they're gonna do for the olympics. All over the city like these are all like chest runs and again. It was violent when the cops were sweeping the on house so it was like violent unnecessary at midnight. It was horrible so this kind of segues into just one small piece of news that i saw which was an article on vice. I think the title is literally. What if we stop calling the cops. And i like i'm sure a lot of black and brown people looked at that and just guffawed like yen. No shit what if we we haven't been and then of course..

He's been running Larry Edmund's bookshop since 1991. And after all these years, like a lot of small business owners on the boulevard, he's starting to wonder if his days here are numbered. Hollywood Boulevard's future will be a celebration of its past. We can really dream big about the heart of Hollywood plan. The heart of Hollywood plan would attempt to capitalize on history and at the same time, preserve it, widening the street, maybe even turning a portion of it into a pedestrian mall, a sort of futurist Art Deco movie Palace Times Square. You know, when, when word spread that the park would be temporarily closed. There was a lot of backlash. I mean, is that still the case? Well, yeah, As you just heard, you know some of the same complaints that unhappy people and their advocates had then they have now they're still upset about this community being disbanded. They say some of the offers of shelter that were made weren't feasible for everyone, And they also have complaints about some who accepted offers to go into project Room Key, which place places almost people in hotel rooms are unhappy about the rules and the curfews and the isolation of that program. You know, as for the 200 or so people who were removed from the site when the park was originally closed. What do we know where they've ended up? Project room key temporary shelters, some permanent housing. I don't have an exact breakdown in front of me now, but that's definitely something that we're going to be Following up on. What about Council member of Mitchell Farrell, he led the effort to revamp the park. What's he saying now that it's back open? Protests in Los Angeles' Echo Park Lake as it plans to close for repairs
"Today we take you to echo Park Lake where people are out, protesting the park's impending closure there trying Tomo fence this place up and kick the homeless. Ciao instead of facing Actual problem, which is that we don't have affordable housing, you know? S so we're just here to support and we just want them to feel safe and secure. Know that they have a place to go at night and you don't have a place to sleep. And I just hope that always being here will show that They have value to us. You know, they're part of our community. The reports are that tomorrow, city officials plan to remove the remainder of people in tents who are still at Echo Park Lake and then temporarily fence it off and closed the park for repairs. KCRW reporter Anna Scott is at Echo Park Lake. She joins me right now. Hey, Anna. Hey, Steve. What's going on over there? What? What is the scene Been like it the park today. Yes. So early this morning, There was probably a couple 100. People gathered here. Protesters like the woman that you just heard from some one house. Residents of the park who are still here. Intense. Gathered up, had a little rally at the park, and then they walked over a couple blocks away to the office of Mitch O'Farrell, the City Council member who represents this area and has been planning the closure. As the morning has gone on, things have quieted down were speaking around mid day and things are really quiet. There aren't a ton of people here, but the thing that everybody is kind of waiting for is for City workers at some point, probably from the Bureau of Sanitation to show up and post notices officially formally giving 24 hour notice about the park closing. Anyone who lives near Echo Park, Anna or hers has driven by Probably noticed all the tenants surrounding the lake. The number has grown dramatically in the past year. Given the pandemic. How many people are there now? It's really hard to say just from walking around today I am guessing maybe a couple dozen something like that. There's far more tense than there are people. I walked the perimeter of the late just a little while ago and there's tents all the way around. Lake probably close to 200 tents pretty densely packed but many fewer people. Mitchell Farrell's office says that in the weeks and months leading up to this, they've moved more than 100 people into temporary hotel rooms and into shelters. And just in the last couple of days, officials with the L.
