You're up against a head coach in Sean McVeigh, who is entering year five, and in the four previous years, he's been the head coach of that team in week one. "Evaluated. In the regular season. The stock of of Andy for us is going to be something for us is seeing what he does during the season. You know that that's how we got. We got to be able to see. What can Andy do during the season with this team and with with these guys That has been our plan this whole entire time, Um, at the same point in time, we also need to evaluate and see we're Justin's at and what he can do and again. He's doing everything that we're asking him to do. He's doing great. So I think it's a good situation for us. And I understand I truly understand the uh Yeah. I don't know what the world would be. But the want to for people that want to see more Justin and all that. I get that. But we also understand where we're at and how what The true plan is and and all we can do is ask Justin to keep playing, and he's doing it and to keep playing and Nick to keep one. My question is just a very simple one again. Why, like, listen to the beginning of this. The stock of of Andy for us is gonna be something for us is seeing what he does during the season. You know that That's how we got. We got to be able to see. What can Andy do during the season. We have to be able to see what Andy can do during the season. Andy Dalton has played in 144 games in the National Football League. Clearly, the Bears don't want to be that the top guy and for our younger listeners that may not know Happened. I lived through being a bears fan and realizing that there was no general manager. There was no player personnel guy for a while for the Bears correct they were. They did not have a guy in place as a GM. Well, it started with Jerry Angelo right after Rod Graves. There was an absence and then ride graves of Jerry Angelo. Right. Well, so they fired jeering Venecia. Yeah. Now you're going back. We're going back and then from I believe, like 87 86. Fired Jerry Vinny see because he was Lockstep with the coach. We had the culture that you talk about Matt Ryan and locks that they had that with Venecia Indica they fire Mike's guy, Jerry Venecia gone. They had Mark Hatley, who did some good things drafted. Holden Crude's that some of these other guys hey, was never named G m He was like your player personnel man, And then they went to Rod Graves. He also had been working there. Then, finally they came out of the dark ages and named a GM was Jerry Angelo. Your current, which is almost recent. It was like 2000 and two right, So that's the point is like like they're just good at their top line football guys, a general manager. That's it. And by the way, even that's behind the times. Even that philosophy is behind the times. You have no one else in the football structure to give you an outside voice or ah, voice of someone who played the game. I could tell you what's going on today. That could help you with the organization right now. Well, it goes back to when Ryan decided that Mitch Stravinsky's the guy. They did all his homework, and he watched to Sean and he broke down table, but he never went to the level that he went to We'll evaluate Patrick Homes and Mitchell Travis Key. And all of a sudden you got the worst of the three guys. Great kid. You were right on his intangibles and his work ethic and players love playing with him. You got the wrong guy. That's just a fact. We let it play out over four years. There were people that the day of the draft ready to make that decision and had never watched Mitchell too risky other than a couple Saturday games But in the end, they were right. He wasn't good enough and you don't have a safety net. That's the point. You don't have. Jonathan Hood at the top of the organization. Who's a football guy who you say pull out, right? You want, Mitch? Okay, Well, if you want to go that way, it's your call. We empowered you with that. You know what Could you sit down and just have dinner with the Sean? Just check all the boxes? Yeah. Yeah, I just think that that conversation has to be had with just more than just Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy. It's gotta be more than just those two and scouts and don't even think other coaches air in that same conversation. When it comes down to Who are we going to draft or who we're going to get in free agency. It's gotta be more than just a couple of guys in the room. Has to be. I think a collaborative effort and and Ted and George not even part of that. Everything's at the feet of Ryan Pace, and I think that's a problem. Someone else has to be in the room to be able to say, Well, what about this? That's how things get done. Not just Hey, man, I'm thinking about getting this guy and that's like that's where we're at. So what system are you running? Because once again I don't know what you are offensively, so I don't I don't have any confidence in that fact because I don't know what met Maggie is offensively. Let me see what the math says The Mass as you need to win the game and to be Aaron Rodgers. You don't need field goals. You need touchdowns. So for them to kick a field goal to go upend the seven. Okay, that's great and then, literally 90. Seconds later, Aaron Rodgers goes down the field for a 72 yard touchdown pass. They kicked four field goals in a game they lost by 19 loser mentality. You can't coach like a coward, and that guy does. Honesty point. What do you make of keeping Mr Biscuit is the starting quarterback or at least as the quarterback? I don't know if there are better options available in a perfect world like if I was the GM of the Bears. I would entertain every past its ability to trade for two Shawn Watson, who's the quarterback of the Houston, Texas. They didn't draft them. They didn't draft the homes. We know we move on from that. But now you have an opportunity to right a wrong Mitch Stravinsky is not going to win many playoff games. If any, I just don't see it. I mean, he hasn't won one yet. They've been into the Cody Parky double double going. They lost that game to the Eagles at the seven point favorite. They should have one and they didn't And he was awful against the Saints. He's not going to take them to the promised land. But why wouldn't you get aggressive and at least you know, try and pick up the phone and see what the Houston Texans want? Because if you bring it to Shawn Watson Who is a dual threat. Great passer good with his legs seems to be well liked in the room. That team is a train wreck in Houston, and I don't think he's gonna be there all that longer. You have to do your diligence and pick up the phone and make a phone call the same trade the farm for the Shawn Watson. But at least see what you have to do to make it a possibility. The problem is this management group in this regime. They are sort of tied to Mitch. Travis Key, Yeah. Of Travis Key does well in the Bears make the playoffs then. Okay, maybe maybe Mitch is okay. Let me ask you this. Let me ask you this, Sam. Um Maybe you don't care what the answer is, But is it possible that you get rid of him? It's true, risky and then he goes in place for a team and then he's really good on a better team, and then you're kicking yourself because we could have kept him. But now look at that. His team is in the playoffs. This other team that he's on. It's a very good question. I wonder about this because I think the schematics don't help him. Mr Biscuit would be at his best in an offense that establishes the run right. If if you can run the football with success and move the chains and keep the defense honest that opens up Mitch Torbinski, the runner. And it opens up play action Play action is where Mr Biscuit can be a very decent quarterback. But the problem is they pass way more than they run and they put too much pressure on 10. That's the issue. He's not going to sit back in the pocket and pick teams off. That's never been the case. He needs to be a part of a fluid offense that has a plan to run the football and established that power run in the trenches and the bears. For whatever reason, whether it be personnel whether it be injuries, whether be idiotic, play calling. They refused to run the football. There are past first offense with a quarterback. That is not an accurate passer, and that's a recipe for disaster. Could the right coach save Mitch Strabinsky if he went to the Patriots if he went, you know X y Z. Maybe, but I think the combination of everything play calling, coaching and quarterback. It clearly isn't working, and they clearly aren't contenders. And yet they clearly don't get rid of the people in the front office, the coach or who else Who else would you like to see not be working for the Bears? The general manager. That's where you start. I mean the decisions rather easy. He's been there six years now. 39 wins 53 losses they've whipped on multiple quarterbacks. To head coaching whiffs. We've got one winning season. "Uh oh. The bear season is over, and even very optimistic Bears fans, I think knew that they were gonna be in tough and in deep in New Orleans this weekend. They hung around. I think a little bit longer than a lot of us thought or figured that they would. They should have had a lead early in the game. 7 3.5 time. Unfortunately, should've had a 10 7 lead. Unfortunately, they didn't what it could've showed up. It was a 73 game at halftime. It was a 73 game with about five minutes to go in the third quarter and then a bad penalty on Eddie Jackson, where not sure what thesis ain't were doing there if they were just trying to draw him offsides if they were going to go, but it's fourth down. It's 4003. So when offsides penalty is going to give the opposition automatic first down, and Eddie Jackson, one of your best players, supposedly supposedly hate is when you're one of the highest paid safeties in all of the National Football League, who had a really rough year, and maybe, in fairness that he's hurt. Maybe we're going to find out like Jamal Adams. He's got a bad shoulder. There's something wrong with him. I think because He don't want to make a tackle right here never been a good tackler, but he just didn't want to make them this year. I'm assuming there's some sort of an injury that we don't know about in fairness to Eddie, but did not have a good year, and you made a very undisciplined why we want to blame any Jackson on that specific play. Do you see a path to them Truly getting better? I don't know that. I see it. You still have to go out and find a quarterback. You still have to figure out what you're doing with your best ride receiver. You still have wide receivers like Anthony Miller that are undisciplined and frustrate you from time to time. Jovon Whims hasn't taken the next step. We had hoped Riley Ridley hasn't taken the next step that we had to the Miller. That's what he said, did the deed. The defense is getting older and the defense costs a lot of money and isn't playing as well. You might be changing your defensive coordinator. Your left tackles a problem. Your left tackle is a big problem. Human turnstile. This is like, Oh, my God. Look at all the things that have to be fixed and corrected And can it happen in one off season? And is there truly a window anymore? After 2018? We're all pretty giddy As bears fans we felt like As fans. This franchise was entering into a championship window. We thought that there was going to be Uh, plenty to celebrate in the coming years. Even with how bitter and disappointing that loss was with the double doing in 2018, and there has been regression to just Very, very mediocre football the last two years and and under normal circumstances, they wouldn't have even made the playoffs this year. So what are they really? And has that window closed that window that we thought was wide open as it closed with nary a playoff win your co narrator what they've scored 27 points in two playoff games. Is that right? Under Matt Maggie. What? They scored 18 in the first one If I'm remembering correctly, what was the final of that first the longest without Philly? We've been mediocre at best. In the 35 years. I'm just looking at this and, you know, normally you would say a franchise like this. We gotta get lucky once in the once in a millennium. We had our chance. And we have a chance to draft to generational quarterbacks, and we picked the other one. So I don't see anything going to change. Yeah, maybe we'll bring in another person. And I know you can't fire ownership. I'm just trying to tell everybody is Just get ready for more of this, because it's not going to get any better. And I'm getting too old my life to think it's ever going to get better in my lifetime, So well, That's depressing Note. I'm gonna let you get away from letting me events a little bit tonight, do you? No. Come on. It's gonna be all right. Hang in there, buddy. I know it's tough, though. I mean, when your lifetime lifelong bears fan and just Can't seem to get over the hump because you look at franchises. You look at the camp. Kansas City was a Pittsburgh some of the story franchises. But you can look around the league and you could see organizations and how they've been able to do it. And when you break it down, you know management allows their head coaches. That general manager is the run the program. They go out and get the right people drafted right people and They're able to go on a run much like you know, the New England Patriots have done and we now look at Kansas City and what they're doing, so it's hard to win, though it is very difficult to make that happen to get all those parts to come together at one time. Bears going up against the Saints Bears After we talked about flipping teams, the Bears have turned into an offensive juggernaut with Mitch Stravinsky down the stretch the Saints starting around back into shape offensively, I like their defense, but Michael Thomas is coming back. Think they pull away this number fields loaded me at 47 a half. I'm on the over. Yeah, I got in my head. I probably just choose the Saint side. I would like to fade Chicago, but they're all the way out to 10, which is just a big number in the playoffs. It is a big number, but I think it's big for a reason. S o. I'm on the over, I think. Well, if you believe the saints are really going to get out ahead, then the over is a good play, too, because in the Bears, they're down 14 or 20 points, they'll likely stack up some points as well. But I like the over finally. Final pick of the out. Kick six Pack Browns at Steelers. This number is dipped down to 5.5 at Fanduel. I'm on the Steelers. I think that not having Stefanski is going to be a big deal for the Browns. I think you saw this a little bit. In the Clemson game against Ohio State. You can script early plays, but then when you have to start dynamically adjusting to what you're seeing on the field I think it's going to be harder for the Browns to do that without Stefanski there without the same coaching staff interaction that they would ordinarily have. So I've got the Steelers at minus 5.5 even as wobbly as the Steelers have been. I think they come out and play a good game. Get the win over the Browns. If there's one quarterback in this wild card round that I do not want to back without their offensive coordinator It's Baker. Maybe Yes, I think the Steelers is the only way to go in this game. You know better defenses are going to find ways to make Mitch uncomfortable on this defense that they're going to play Sunday in New Orleans is going to find ways to make Mitch uncomfortable. And so now, if you're Mitch, if you're Matt and Bill later you have to make sure that when you're disrupted those don't become, you know, game losing mistakes, right that you don't just lose your mind and throw a bad pick our fumble. Uh, this this isn't another one of these defense is that's going to put Mitch Stravinsky's weaknesses on center stage. And he's going to have to work really, really hard, every single possession to make sure that he doesn't fall apart. Because they can challenge and they contest you and they can confuse what you're seeing. And we've talked between us for four years about how processing isn't necessarily. Mitch is strength there, right And so It's gonna be a major challenge Sunday. He's gonna have to play Probably his best game of the season for them have any chance and the states are gonna do everything within their power to make sure that doesn't happen. Well, what took so long for them to kind of figure out? How to really run the ball effectively dead. It's a combination off commitment, Carm, and then it just took them forever to find the offensive line combination that worked with what they wanted to do, and it's just You know, you can stop and say, boy, What would this season have been had they had the trial and error faces off a normal offseason of May and June that, with more traditional about late July in early August that were more traditional, would they have found answers? Quicker than week. 12 right, potentially, But that's not the world we live in. And so I think that that struggle to commit to the running game to understand that David Montgomery is a guy that can help you every single week. If you give him the right opportunities. It's a problem and it's got to be part of the evaluation this season because Guys. Because I don't think it's necessarily gonna tell us anything about the long term direction this franchise and that should be worrisome for everybody up the up.
