"Member I mean beyond potentially corroding family relations it weighs on family finances and it weighs on individuals mental health even if they aren't the ones with addiction the so it is something that is sort of ever -present and and a threat and a sort of an existential way. Did you learn in the poll about any other important health issues that Americans may not really be paying attention to though maybe they should be? Well I mean COVID as you've reported and others have is back on the rise with new variants people basically view the risk of a tick or mosquito a bite is about the same as getting the virus now which is obviously quite different than when we were asking this question last year we see that masking has dropped dramatically by about half over the last six months only 15 percent of the people who we asked say they wear a mask summer all the time and interestingly though the case counts that are going up hospitalizations the cases in nursing homes have changed the perception that the pandemic is over now half half of the population that we asked agrees the pandemic is over compared to 62 percent when we asked the question in May so sliding around a little bit in terms of their perception of where things are with the threat do senior healthcare editor atrial pedal i'm talking with our brennan hazelton look at top the stories we're following for you on wtop this early morning former president donald trump is now asking that his federal rule january 6th trial be pushed back to april of 2026 and maui's head of emergency management we hear has left the job this week citing health reasons stay tuned we'll keep you updated and have full details in the minutes ahead on wtop you are listening 103 former pro football offensive tackle mitch schwartz knows for a guy buying jewelry is a daunting task at most stores but not if you go to diamonds direct it's very simple and very easy process for a guy to go in there and not be overwhelmed mitch found diamonds direct and has been back many times

"Good Wednesday morning. Welcome to the middle of your week. Thanks for starting with us here at WTO. This march 15th, where the time now is one 42. This is WTO P news. 7 Virginia sheriff's office employees have been charged this week with murder in connection with the death of a man at a state mental health hospital last week. Local prosecutor in the case says Henry county sheriff's office, personnel took a 28 year old man to central state hospital last week to admit him as a patient The sheriff's office says he was arrested in connection apparently with a burglary a few days before and was being taken there to get an evaluation. The man was physically restrained and we're told died during the intake process, according to the prosecutor. State police were called to investigate his death, Virginia state police say this morning, they're still investigating and have security footage, which they do not plan to release. The 7 sheriff's office employees actually turned themselves in. Knew this morning on WTO Andrea reeb has stepped away from her role apparently a special prosecutor in the case of the shooting on the rust movie sets in New Mexico, multiple outlets reporting this morning that recused herself from the case after lawyers for actor Alec Baldwin filed a motion to disqualify her in the case. They argued her involvement in the case was unconstitutional. Since she serves as a New Mexico state legislator, Baldwin has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges in the killing of cinematographer Elena Hutchins. And in battle congressman signals, no matter he will run for another term. New York congressman George Santos signals he intends to run for reelection in 2024, filing paperwork with the federal election commission. The statement of candidacy does not mean that he's yet running, but it does allow the first term Republican to raise money. Since being elected in November, his resume and biography have been under intense scrutiny, and he's admitted to fabricating details of his life. He's already facing several investigations. "This is, this is one of the most impressive showings that I have ever witnessed on this show. I'm just saying that. I enjoy the format. Who wants to be a millionaire is a great show for me because it's so I just love the ego that the contestants get all the time in the world to just like sit there and it's like jeopardy. I love but it's like rapid fire and you're answering the questions and you're moving on to the next one. Who wants to be a millionaire is like, I'm the star of this show and I'm gonna take my time and tell you what I'm thinking and you know I enjoy I sort of have taken the opportunity to do the same here. I still remember when the first guy won a $1 million and I remember sitting there and my dad is like a master of obscure trivia and he had just sort of walked into the room and had no idea what was happening and he answered every single question immediately without any hesitation and then just walked out of the room and I was like you would have won a $1 million and at the time that just blew my mind. I told everybody at school about that. I still remember the winning question too. Do you? I do. Is this my Moneyball question? The winning $1 billion question, the first, the first time a guy, what was it? Something Carpenter won a $1 million. It's like John Carpenter. The question was what president appeared on laugh in and the answer was Richard Nixon. Yes. That was the $1 million question. It was. Yeah. Oh, man. All time great TV moment. He used the phone a friend and then called his dad and was like, I don't need your help. I wanted to tell you that I won the $1 million. How old are we at this time, Connor? Oh man. Probably like 12 and ten. I don't know. It was awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Just an all time spike the football moment. It was great. Yes. That's great. That's not. I'm still unimpressed by the question you have to answer. We'll give you a real one to wrap up here. All right. This is of course the Moneyball. It's worth two. The category is Mitch ology. And it's a true or false. True or false, Mitch goldich. There are zero pro football Hall of Famers with the first name Mitch. Or Mitchell. I love that you asked me this. I am so well prepared for this question, Gary. You have no idea. You went to the you did. Didn't you do a story about this? I did indeed. When a wonderful athlete named Mitch Richmond was voted into the professional basketball Hall of Fame, yours truly interviewed him for a story about being the first person named Mitch inducted into any of the major sports halls of fame. No Mitch burger, no Mitch trubisky, no Mitch Schwartz. There are no niches in the pro football Hall of Fame. Final answer. Wow. That is true. This is incredibly impressive. This saved the show. This was a I had a C minus performance today, but Mitch really brought it. Gary, you were great too, but thanks. This is fun, guys. Thank you. I'm happy to come back anytime Rohan's not available. So Mitch is now, okay, yeah. Second place all time. That's great. Wow. Right ahead of Peter king. Third place. It's a tie for first. So it's tie for third place. What did I get? I got one wrong, just the vampire squid was my only I'll take it. But doesn't he now get he gets what are you doing, Connor? What is your math? What are you trying to do? Oh, all right, I tried to add numbers too quickly, and that's when bad things happen. Usually that's what I have to step in and fix things for you. Yes. That's a perfect way to put the bow on this. Well, by the way, producer Shelby Royce and points out. Mitch Mitchell, drummer for Jimi Hendrix, is in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That's a double double Mitch though. It's like a double negative cancels out. It's no Mitch. Mitch un Ryan was a good match. I enjoyed watching him. Broncos. I think he was like a defensive tackle who scored a touchdown once, like as a receiver. Am I making that up? I think that might have happened. 20 13? I don't know. I could be wrong. Mitch Mitchell is the fourth most famous Mitch according to this site that I just Googled. There's not a lot of famous Mitch's. Like I'm at number 20 and they don't even have a photo of the person. So maybe after my appearance on this podcast, I'll climb up the ranks. Okay. I could do that. Who do they have as the number one most famous? Mitch McConnell. Yeah, current events right now. Yeah. A senior U.S. administration official traveling with president Joe Biden earlier called the plan and historic reshaping of the rules for the global economy that will force corporations to pay their fair share of taxes The U.S. and the European Union have concluded a trade truce on steel and aluminum that will allow the allies to remove tariffs on more than $10 billion worth of their exports each of 20 summit in Rome Vaccination rates among New York City's police fire and sanitation departments rose as workers faced possible suspension on Monday The city is bracing for gaps in public health and safety with tens of thousands of essential public workers still not vaccinated under the mandate imposed by marital de Blasio New York Times reports New York police department as saying it's vaccination rate has risen to 84% up from 79% on Thursday The fire department's numbers rose to 77% from 69% the day before amid complaints of trash already piling up on city sidewalks the rate for sanitation workers rose 9% According to city hall spokesman Mitch Schwartz the number was 67% on Thursday Most city workers were required to receive a first dose by Friday afternoon but were allowed to work through the weekend presumably leaving more time for vaccination Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm Susanna Palmer This is Bloomberg You're listening to balance and power with David Weston on Bloomberg radio Bloomberg reported this week that the Treasury Department and other agencies will give the green light to a plan for the SEC to take the lead role in regulating stable coins something Cher Gary gensler has been pushing for likening the coins to bank deposits that have to be backed up by reserves to explain the move and how it fits into the larger issues in regulating cryptocurrencies I talked to Todd Zimmerman of Superman compliance services The SEC is sort of drifted into this area in the past It doesn't seem like this would be this kind of congressional action If it's security the SEC has the authority to regulate it I guess that could be challenged but I think it's pretty clear I think I'm pretty solid ground here Is the basic idea here for stable coins which are as I understand tied to a Fiat currency that in fact there are reserves that basically are reasonably liquid to back it up because that's the promise as I understand it of the stable coin That's how it's supposed to work Now how that exactly will work is a little unclear which currency is backed up and where that will be held And ultimately who's going to be the party on the hook to the extent that you have a breaking of the valuation Is this like money markets essentially That's how I understand it So money markets with a crypto overlay Yeah I think that's exactly right So this would be one step in that direction Maybe not requiring congressional action What else needs to be done Because these are just stable coins we're talking about For example Bitcoin would not be covered by this as I understand it Yeah I think look there's a lot going on in the crypto space As I'm sure you're all aware the SEC finally approved a Bitcoin futures ETF fund the pro shares fund which is done very very well A lot of demand for that And then there's a lot of pushing for additional crypto funds those that potentially will invest in future invest directly crypto The SE isn't there yet I think the future is fund is testing the market but some of the concerns with investing in futures are solved as opposed to investing directly in the cryptocurrency things like valuation and liquidity It's much more difficult in a direct investment And that is because with respect to futures as opposed to the underlying Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency there is a regulatory level inserted because of the futures right I think that's part of it The futures market is a fairly well established market It's regulated futures prices are regulated So I think the SEC is more comfortable with that and obviously Gary Gonzalez used to run the CFTC So he is not a new fight when it comes to the futures market I think the commission and many people in the market are just less comfortable with direct trading and the coins themselves although we're moving in that direction There's no question about it Talk about some of the other issues that would not necessarily resolve just by making sure that a stable coin is backed up by.

120 countries I'm Susanna Palmer This is Bloomberg This is masters in business with very little on Bloomberg radio My extra special guest this week is Lisa Jones She is the CEO of a Monday U.S. the $100 billion U.S. arm of Europe's second largest asset manager on Mundy a Mundy proper manages over $2 trillion in assets than one of the ten largest asset managers in the world with over a 100 million clients in 36 countries about 4500 employees Lisa Jones welcome to Bloomberg Thanks Barry thanks for having me here today My pleasure I've been looking forward to chatting with you for a while I think of a Monday as really one of the largest asset managers that a lot of people especially in the U.S. haven't heard of But before we get to a month let's talk a little bit about your early career experience You come out of Trinity College with a bachelor's in economics and you start at MFS investment management tell us a little bit about your early experiences in the industry So you know I've been working for 30 years So when you say to me about your early experience because I'll make sure we don't go on for so long But actually prior to MFS I started working at EF button for those of your listeners who remember EF Hutton Trinity has been Hartford and at that point in time you went to New York or you went to Boston and I was from Boston so I wanted to take a shot at working in New York City And I started working for EF Hutton and work there for a few years really worked there through the crisis of 1980 the stock market crash in the late 1980s and started in customer service of the brokerage accounts where shareholders wanted to call and ask questions and get some answers It was a great introduction into being an a client facing role And so from there I went to work at MFS in Boston and I joined MFS in 1988 I joined MFS as a wholesaler covering the bank channel the territory was the northeast and back then in the bank channel the northeast was really main down to Virginia And it was in the early days where beyond bank trust departments banks were beginning to have licensed investment professionals sit in their lobbies to offer alternatives to banking customers And that was my first experience working at MFS as a wholesaler I then as the time went on began to become in-house more in a management role in assuming responsibility for running the bank channel after MFS and keep in mind as we think about the world of investing today and talking about low interest rates This is a period of time when CDs were double digit Treasuries were double digit And so it was a quite a different environment for selling investment products in yields event at that point in time So is that if a fast for a total of 16 or so years xyosted spent some time on the institutional side running the global institutional business for emphasis at that time So let's talk a little bit about that global institutional business eventually you end up as global head of distribution at Morgan Stanley's What enabled you to climb to the top of that ladder and how different is institutional and distribution from what people typically think of as individual investing So today I would say that those lines between the two groups are blurring But let's go back to the point in time of when I transitioned from what we would call the kind of retail or the distribution side to the institutional side Being responsible for running the bank channel at that time I was engaged with the bank trust departments and they would be hiring.

quicktake powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm Susanna Palmer This is Bloomberg You're listening to balance and power with David Weston on Bloomberg radio Bloomberg reported this week that the Treasury Department and other agencies will give the green light to a plan for the SEC to take the lead role in regulating stable coins something chair Gary gensler has been pushing for likening the coins to bank deposits that have to be backed up by reserves to explain the move and how it fits into the larger issues of regulating cryptocurrencies I talked to Todd Superman of Superman compliance services The SEC is sort of drifted into this area in the past It doesn't seem like this would be this kind of congressional action If it's security the SEC has the authority to regulate it I guess that could be challenged but I think it's pretty clear I think I'm pretty solid out here It is the basic idea here for stable coins which are as I understand tied to a Fiat currency The fact that there are reserves that basically are reasonably liquid to back it up because that's the promise as I understand it of the stable coin That's how it's supposed to work Now how that exactly will work is a little unclear which currencies will back it up and where that will be held And ultimately who's going to be the party on the hook to the extent that you have a breaking of the valuation Is this like money markets essentially That's all I understand Money markets with a crypto overlay Yes I think that's exactly right So this would be one step in that direction Maybe not requiring congressional action What else needs to be done Because this is just stable coins we're talking about For example Bitcoin would not be covered by this as I understand it Yeah I think look there's a lot going on in the crypto space As I'm sure you're all aware the SEC finally approved a Bitcoin futures ETF fund the pro shares fund which is done very very well A lot of demand for that And then there's a lot of pushing for additional crypto funds those that potentially will invest in future and most of them invest directly crypto The SE isn't there yet I think the future is fund is testing the market but some of the concerns with investing in futures are solved as opposed to investing directly in the cryptocurrency things like valuation and liquidity It's much more difficult in a direct investment And that is because with respect to futures as opposed to the underlying Bitcoin or other.

think this is shots are actually a good idea We also want to slow down these break through infections None of us expect this Taliban to change its behavior at all when it comes to the ferry's activity Where the world of politics meets the world of business What do employers do as real wages start to tick up Cleaner is actually cheaper when you internalize all those negative effects for the burning of fossil fuels Balance of power with David Weston on Bloomberg radio Coming up this hour my exclusive interview with Evercore co chairman and co CEO Ralph schloss after announcing this week he's stepping down after 13 years I ask him why now And what comes next Plus the SEC is set to move forward on regulating stable coins I talk with Todd silverman of Superman compliance about what's next in the crypto world and my exclusive interview with Senate banking committee chairman sherrod Brown For his view on the Federal Reserve's leadership and the Führer over securities trading by fed presidents But first General Motors announced its third quarter earnings this week beating expectations across the board Although helped by its financing arm and reimbursement for the cost of its bolt recall I caught up with GM chair and CEO Mary Barra for her reaction What the real story is how well we perform from trucks and full size SUVs We're selling every vehicle we can make And I think that along with the overall environment is what allowed us to have a beat for the quarter And I think it shows the strength of our underlying business So I'm really proud of the team and everything that they accomplish So the magic words there for me were everyone you can make because you can't necessarily make all the ones you'd like because of the supply chain problems We've talked about it before I know that it's continuing into next year I guess my key question for you Mary is is there anything at this point that can be done to speed up the time that you can get the microchips that you need Well we're seeing improvements in fourth quarter We had indicated that Q three would be the toughest for us And then it was further impacted by COVID But we're seeing strong stronger performance now We'll have a Q one will be better than Q four It will linger into next year and we're right now our feeling is we'll be in a much better shape in the second half of 2022 And we're also taking steps over the medium term to make sure we're never seeing this kind of constraint Not only with chips but with other whether it's critical materials or just the overall supply chain Because we have an aggressive growth strategy in front of us and we're going to make sure that we can execute it So it's a very it's a near term problem that will work through In the meantime Mary are there places you can save some costs Let me give you one example advertising If you can't sell as many vehicles maybe you don't need to advertise as much Well David it's a great point We are saving across the board We're seeing a strong pricing environment Obviously we're adjusting what we're doing to match the fact that we're selling every vehicle that we can But also through COVID and through this crisis with semiconductors we have found ways to make the business more efficient We're working with our dealers to drive an increase in profitability for them as well as improving our costs And so across the board we are always driving efficiencies And that's an underlying underlying strength of our organization and that supports the strong earnings Mary let's talk about the perhaps longer term that's electric vehicle something you really embrace you have some very aggressive goals for General Motors going out Electric fields We had some big news this week from arrival starts with a T won't necessarily name it with some big fleet sales particularly to hurt I know in the past you've been I think a little dubious about fleet sales because the margins get down Where are you on fleet sales for electric vehicles Are they different Because you really want to get broad acceptance Are you looking at fleet sales for electric vehicles Well you know if you look at bright drop the commercial fleet and what we can do from a light commercial vehicle perspective with bright drop and the whole ecosystem that will support I think is a huge opportunity And that's some of the most profitable fleet sales We're looking at many different opportunities Because with electric vehicles you can really reframe how the sales will be And so we're looking at a number of opportunities but I think what we've announced is around break drop I'm very excited about that because that's just pure growth for us But as I understand we shouldn't rule out the possibility down the road General Motors might have a deal similar to hertz deal Well you know in the past we have limited rental cars because that generally was the least profitable type of fleet sales as we reimagine how the business will look We're not ruling anything out Since we talked last there have been more and more vaccine mandates Is that affecting General Motors operations Do you anticipate it will I don't think it will We'll work We continue to encourage our employees to get the vaccine We continue to provide them the information from CDC and other like organizations around the globe And we're going to work to understand how to implement the executive order from the president But to do so in a way that our employees and our unions agree to So once we know the details will work the execution plan but I don't foresee it being an issue for General Motors as we look at our overall labor availability Yeah you do have a very important relationship with the UAW CIO As you talk with him do you see resistance coming from the union side to vaccine mandates Well I think that's a better question to ask the UAW We're just working with them to provide information and encourage encourage all of our employees to make the decision with the right information And that's what we'll continue to do And then again we'll look at what the specifics are of the mandate and figure out how to implement At this point we don't know where we are in the pandemic but it seems like it's getting better again in the United States Is it affecting GM operations either on the sales side or in the production side Actually the biggest impact that's gaining us right now is we talked about it as semiconductors But we've seen recovery from the impact in Q three from some of our supply base that caused a little bit deeper impact So I'm optimistic that we are through the worst of it We've shared our safety protocols with our supply base around the world So that's what gives me confidence that we're going to see a stronger Q four and then a stronger Q one And even as we get to the second half of next year continued improvement Thanks to GM chair and CEO Mary Barra coming up.

"He's brought to you by Valparaiso University and they had a big upset win over Drake. The other day, who was undefeated and ranked Val Post smacked him by 17. After ball in the lead the day before in that two game serious so congrats to Matt Logic and Valparaiso, Albert Breer Tristan dwarfs had the highest pro football focus. Great of any player in the Super Bowl. He was a rookie. On the offensive line. I guess it proves that if you have a good offensive line and you protect your quarterback, you can make plays. And if you don't I don't care who you got back there. Even Patrick Holmes. You know what? It's interesting because, you know, I think that like for all the only made over Brady in the homes and the different skill position players, each team had all the different story lines going in and You know, football still a game one of the line of scrimmage and you know, I ast much of anything else. But that game was representative of that. And you know you saw with the chief's losing Um, Eric Fisher and Mitch Schwartz. You know, going to that game and get without their tackles against defensive line that had dominant Sue. And Shaq, Barrett, Jason Pierre Paul and like you said. On the other side, you know it's It's investing in the first round pick the 1st 1st trumpet they had with Tom Brady. They're in the right tackle interesting works and adding it to a group that already really invested in that already had Donovan Smith and Sean gents. And then Ryan Jensen and You know, in Alamar pet on it. Um, you know, we saw the difference. We saw the difference in the two teams really kind of came at the line of scrimmage. And you know the deficiency of cheese had there not only Meant, you know. Patrick Holmes is running for his life all night. But it also meant more three and outs, which allowed the bucks to establish the pace in the temple of the game and kept it from being the sort of fast breaking chief sir are more comfortable. And so you know, I think everything came down to that. You know another great example of how football's a game one blind scrimmage, Albert, you've covered Tom ready for a long time, so you can have perspective of this. So where do you place Tom Brady amongst the grace that you've seen your lifetime. Eyes. I mean, boys, the greatest football player without question, you know, and I didn't see You know, Johnny United or, um, you know where Otto Graham play, but I think it's safe to say that, you know, um, you know, 20 years from now on, we're all old. Not that we aren't already but Uh, that that Brady is going to be, you know, regarded, probably is the greatest football player ever to play. The heavens. Have on sports in sports is tough, You know, and I sort of and I know that I don't want to take a fight with you guys. I know it's city around. But, you know, I think that this does sort of, you know, kind of Elevate him to another level from a lot of other guys could being able to do this another city at his age. And look, I know there are degrees of difficulty and all this, but When I looked this up a sort of blown away. I mean, we all remember what Michael Jordan was with the Wizards. Brady's five years older Now then then, then Jordan was when he signed in Washington and you think about that, and it just sort of. It's crazy to think like How much you know Tom Braise, you know, accomplished Senses. 37th Birthday Four championships is he turned 37. You know it's I don't know. You know, I think we have to kind of let it breathe a little bit The figure out where he's at But, you know, I think we're way past arguing if he's the greatest football player of all time. I think you know now we're looking at things like that. Where I'm preparing him with Jordan comparing the Bay Bruce, you know, compare him with whoever you want. Wayne Gretzky. You know, I think he's very solidly in the argument. As you know, one of the three or four greatest Came sports athletes in North American history. And I hope he grew up here. I grew up here. I love Michael Jordan, all of it. I agree. Tom Brady for me, is the greatest team sports athlete. He the most dominant Lang Gretzky. Wilt Chamberlain's numbers were insane. But in terms of Dropping a guy under your franchise and the effect he has I go. Tom Brady number one. Yeah. You know what's interesting about two guys is like I remember, you know, so I covered Brady now mold up to have covered Brady when he was in his twenties, but Um, you know, I remember my first couple years covering the league and you know I was on the Patriots feet. And so I was every one of their games and five and six and I You know, I just I remember there were even then there was like a feeling of inevitability that in the fourth quarter, whether they were down by 10 are up by 10. He was gonna take over and it was the same sort of feeling. It was the exact same sort of feeling. I remember having Michael Jordan when he was a teenager. You know what I mean? Like where you knew the ball is in his hands at the end of the game. It didn't always work out this way. But you knew what you felt like you knew who was gonna win. You know what I mean? Looking again, like there's almost shocking when it didn't happen in the world points in time for both Jordan and Brady, where they had the ball in their hands, and it didn't work out. But more often than not You felt like it would happen and more than just that. You knew they knew it was gonna happen. And so I think that that's just such a I don't know. I mean, we could talk about like our generation versus you know, kids who are, you know, 20 years old. Now there's so much focus on like Um there's so much focus on like rock athleticism and, like, you know, the ability to you know, put together a highlight that wild people on social media I think sometimes.
