"Welcome back to the rich Eisen show. And Brockman on this day in which a video that went viral today of Stuart Scott doing the the flu game twenty two years ago on sports center tonight. It's only fitting that my next guest is here today. And the reason why is when I started off at K R, crtv in Redding, California as the sports anchor at five o'clock in the afternoon. Eleven o'clock at night between one thousand nine hundred four nineteen Ninety-six the number of times, I did highlights of Mitch Richmond for the Sacramento Kings, on my eleven o'clock. Broadcast believe it. I I've lost track point my dad, I would send him tapes. My father would say, how do you see Mitch Richmond? So well. It's Mitch Richmond. You say it so fast. But at any rate, the fact that I'm now on a show with my name on it. And I look at you and I see you hear it gives me in a sense of accomplishment of because of who you are, and what you stand for, and how your friends of the good buddy of mine and serve this great to see you here. Thanks. How is essentially what I am saying what about that game last night what a gay what a game. I mean you know it was the excitement to before the game where, you know, you really and truly know how great Kevin Durant is, you know, coming off of not playing for five weeks and any common nails, the first three threes that he shoots. Just just amazing performance. First quarter you could see the rest of the team, he, he was he jilted the rest of the team, you could see he told no series, jolted, the series, he jolted the strategies if he is why the hell do we need to see that to realize what a difference maker? He is for some people. It's just fake. You nuts to me. Sometimes you being a moment. And, you know, you, you don't see him. And you know, you just think that the greatness that he has. I think that's the confidence that met made him come back. You know you look at the sex to sites that he's had in the playoffs. A guy walk on the accordion thousand thirty points a game and doesn't matter if LeBron is gardening. Whoever's gardening, he has put up a big numbers against anyone even against the warriors when they lost. And then it was up three one but he's just a tremendous tremendous players that he will go down as one of the best. Now. You tell me again with your fourteen seasons the NBA here, hall of fame resume. I'm in a position where I talk into my phone every day and so many others in, in my business industry, do the same and I hear all the conversation in the talk and the talk of legacy and the talk of what people are saying, and I think many athletes, here, they really don't absorb it. What Durant might be different in the fact that he has burner accounts on Twitter and things of that nature, where he's all I hear about him is he's very sensitive guide. And do you think any of the conversation about his legacy his joining the team that he couldn't beat despite winning two NBA finals piece for them that all that conversation that he doesn't really wanna play from anymore that are factored into him playing last night? Do you think any of that fact while I'll think probably a percentage of that of because we, we've been here that for how long, you know, even when he grow when he joined the war is they were talking about, you know? He's doing the best team in the world. So he's he's, he's hurting his legacy. I'm pretty sure some of that creeped in his mind. But I think the most important thing that, that creep in his mind is that if he didn't get paid he would still be playing this game. And he's one of those guys that love basketball loves to play. He wanted to help his team, and he probably had some, some gripes in the back is my but he knew that they needed him and they needed a boost for digest actually see him on the court. I've thought he was gonna have thirty that night but you can tell that he was just going to be able to, to catch and shoot. Probably not doing anything off the dribble. And I think what happened was instincts, just crypt, crypt in when a Bacha pushed up on him. It's like Landis got Kengo army and he tried to do a quick move. And that's what happened. Yeah. Just a fake mind. You know, his his mind was a little head of his body at the time and it always happens to when you hurt a when you're older player. But I think at that particular time he felt like I meant this guy. Can't garment. What are you pushing up on me and he tried? And then, and that's what happened here and he planted his fully up. Winter's, too fat, you. That's your motivation. Yes. Because you've been there like, you know, it happens in in wreck lead. You know, when you when you retire, you get a guy, you know, keep talking smack, and then your mind. Is not really where your body's at your body's a little bit behind. And then now you're trying to do some things that you did. When when you were younger or do some things when you are healthy. And that's what happens sometimes when you when you're when you hurt you play better because, you know, you can't do some of the things so you really have to concentrate on on your movement, and how you play Mitch Richmond hall of Famer here on the rich Eisen show. He spent some time also with the kings, in the front office. Correct. And that's what boogie cousins with their, this would boogie cousins had to say last night, about the fan reaction to the injury, as well as to some of the conversation that you and I were having about the talk in regards to Durant that was surrounding his comeback. "Mitch Richmond to the airwaves here niche. Thanks for joining us. I know I've been kind of bothering you about coming on. Now, you're finally coming. I told you need to come especially after this game. You're right about that. I'm glad you put that in there. Now Mitch we got to ask, you know, the people I guess the big question. People wanna say are the warriors better without Katie boys are twenty eight and one without Katie. What are your thoughts about that in the ball movement? When he's not in the game. No. The ball ball movement. Definitely. I think they used the ball momentum as bad as it move the ball. But when you have a dynamic player like Katie no question about it. If he's what the Golden State Warriors. They are a better team with him on the court. Now, if he goes somewhere else, then I would have to say to Golden State Warriors better without. But right now KB is is still a member of the Golden State Warriors. He's one of the dynamic layers that we have at this game. In just one of the smoothest scores of that. We have any makes he's definitely makes Golden State a better team. So you look at Golden State at Klay Thompson have a bad night, Katie there to really clean that up. So right now, those two guys really got to continue to keep playing. Well, but I still go to stay will win in a one of those guys struggle because they do play the deeper sedan. They play green we really kind of anchoring that defense. But no, that's that's enough. Now, mid the bench scored thirty points. I mean as a shooter, you know, how hard is it to come off the Benjamin you didn't have to do this star. But you know, when you come off the bench like a Quin cook. And you're expected to knock down these shots and create an instant offense that can be tougher shooter. Very tough for for bench player haven't played most of the of the play offs into come on. And then to to make sense. But I think the one thing that you could you have to you have to continue to do when you're not playing you have to get up south. Jim Jim to make sure that you still a routine. As a bench. But you still have to be ready when you're number is call. So I think if you slack off, and you don't do those things prepared then I think you will struggle but being NBA player. I think if you could tell you to keep doing what you're doing outside of not playing a you'll be fine. We're not gonna Mitch Richmond hall of Famer NBA champ. You name it US Olympia and everything body Joe got him on for us to run TMC talking about the warriors taken that lead over Portland. Mitch I want to ask you the other side, that's Portland. They got for the Western Conference finals, they knocked off the nuggets knocked off. Okay. See and now they start off and they want to say laying eggs, but they didn't play the way they wanted to in game one. So if you're Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, what are you guys saying and doing it practice today? Well, you know, those guys are phenomenal player. So they have definitely game to probably be very aggressive want to get that Mike Yok anytime a great player played not. So so well the next game they come back with a vengeance. But I think. We'll we'll play well against the Golden State Warriors. But I just think the war are too much on the Golden State will we'll be in the finals there. So I think yeah. I mean, it's it's a lot. What you saw last night on the court without K D. You're like can we ask you to reflect back a little bit on the previous series the Houston series because everybody that wants still is resonating in people's minds. How how devastating was it for Houston? And in terms of the warriors to knock them off in Houston without K D. It seems to have freed up steps confidence. You know, we got a look back at the same. I mean, the last two years I did the same thing. Houston in the mall. So for the championship. No question about it that that was a big win for them. I've been have any doubt. Because I know that at that particular time they will have a little bit more vulnerable bit of it would have about he's moving make a bake golden. I mean, I'll make Houston play play team defense of something that they do have trouble doing at time. And I mean, Golden State just they played appropriate game. You know, Kerr's curry struggled at that the end I mean, I at the beginning. But he's at the moment player, you give them just an aunt they need to make. And I thought Houston not. So that that curry was shooting bad Houston did a really really good job over for the whole series. They were taken away to three, and they would contest them at the basket of then all of a sudden, you know, he got loose and gained seven. And and so who is only a few more games left at oracle Mitch. And and you know, there's a lot of mixed feelings kind coming in. We a lot of our listeners or I don't want to say disgruntle, but they're unhappy the East Bay guy. Say man, you're leaving us. You're going to San Francisco, and I just wonder what when you look back. Mitch. I mean, your feelings about I know they weren't current calling at oracle when you were playing there was a call see him. But. Is there a night for you? Or a moment for you or game for you that you like. Yeah. Man. That's the night when the Coliseum went off. What are your memories looking back? What does really kind of hard to say? Because I think you know, we always look back when I talked to John when I talked to Chris I think every game was was really phenomenal in in that building. And I think it has carried over the plans that never sit down. Are they always cheering team? Also, I never knew about the bay area. When I got drafted at my first couple of games. I mean, I I was I was like man, I love this place. It's a beautiful place of play unique places play. You don't understand what you're on that court, and you get the energy from the fans is one of a kind of tell you too. And I'm gonna really miss that. Even the when I go back and see the games now still feel that same energy. Yeah. I think that you know, going to San Francisco of money move. But. Truly think that you're gonna lose some of that spunk. You got you know, you got a lot of people from San Jose the bear they come all around the world to to to to to Oakland golden warrior game that was his school. I don't know if they're going to be staying up all night with this today dies. I hear you, man. I love fits. I gotta say man, I grew up giants and Niners, man. So I gotta stand up for San Francisco right here. Man. Giants fans and forty Niners fans are born hard man and old candlestick Niners giants fan. So I'm going to say don't, you know, don't be so quick to dismiss San Francisco at exactly it. Ain't exactly a countdown. You know what I mean? Okay. Hey, I totally understand that. Yeah. Hey, I'm standing up put a bay area. Hell. Yeah, man. But no, you're echoing a lot of people say. I hope listen I'll go and play that San Francisco steel have that energy. I I really really do. I know it's going to be a beautiful arena. But you know, you just gonna lose some of those fans that they didn't care if they were sitting by the concession stand in the bay area. You know, if they were standing out today, just only see one basket, right? They didn't care. I mean, and and they they bought up everything that any any time. They come to that arena. You go in that store. Man, you, you know, you're trying to give jers. Stuff that you're gonna miss and and I hope and pray, of course, I do love the bear. I love San Francisco. I love the Golden State Warriors. I love everything about the East Bay. And I just hope and pray that that that you still have that that type of spunk in Sarasota, you definitely priests into a lot of choirs out there. Lot of people agree with you share Mitch Richmond, eight minutes before we let you go. It's great to talk to you too basketball, Famer bay area sports hall of fame too. We just had the Bank with the other night. Molly was there for Jason Kidd that was fun. It was fun to see. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The very cool, man. But a quick question on the east Milwaukee Toronto. I know we're all out here on the west coast doing our thing and focusing on the warriors. But if indeed the warriors take care of Portland as we anticipate they will warn of those two teams has come in. It's going to be to Hawaii and the raptors or Janas in the bucks. And I don't know Mitch you taken note of either of those guys is games. And what are you seeing? Yeah. I am really. Looking forward to this series Kawai against the Greek freak up and just gonna be a great series, man. I think either of those scenes what I think Milwaukee. It was a dangerous team. Oh, you know. Originated with with the of at the front mean demeanor of how he looks when he's playing the game. And it just reminds me of the old days where each has miss it. And he's willing his team to win you play in the right way on those guys are playing a bomb phenomenal basketball. I mean, go to to lose that game one against Boston. And Dan big them after that it just so you of what leadership yet he has with the team. And I mean what you said about this guy. I didn't see that. He was gonna have enough the pool that gave up at the end. I mean, he was dead tired. I mean, he was passed. He was passing the ball to his teammates things passing. The right back tool could use of all he and he shot forty times that he has never done in his career all but those who match up just be phenomenal to watch. Think Milwaukee probably. Look at Golden State, and they will they will make it a good challenge of a Golden State. I think I think Toronto I think they'll go through to Otto, but Milwaukee it would be something to watch those who teams play against Milwaukee and voted state. Hey, Mitch, Molly was the arena last night. When we see you at some games Western Conference or hopefully NBA finals. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm gonna feed her at some point time. I'm going to be there. No question. You gotta be by those fans by the concession stayahead last night out there man for real get one last night. Yeah. But I'm not fighting the Khuzestan on woman. I'd I'd be in the bar area. Just. I'll join you down there. And the first drinks on me. Man to share this anecdote before we let you go. May I told you this before night, I went to UCLA the same years as Pooh Richardson? Right. So I was covering. I was basketball writer for the daily Bruin new school paper, and we were doing a little preview session with poo fall in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight and we were talking about, you know, his summer. And I think if you story checks out he went to the tryout camp for the national team with you guys. And he said to us me and this other reporter, he goes, we said, what did you do this summer, man? I did the whole trial thing for the Olympics. And he said man, none of y'all are talking about my man at a Kansas state. And he said, well, he called you Mitch and kids cover your ears. He said, that's my man. Mitch the bitch. Richmond. And he did a little following. He did a little following jumper. He goes sweetest follow away in the game. He said so ever since. Was like a senior in college. We were ESPN wasn't as big then. And we weren't getting the driver and all that. So K state wasn't really in our in our head in California..
