"To check the morning papers with Bloomberg Steve rappaport of course, Steve the breaking news of President Biden is indeed running for reelection crossed too late to make it in print, but the departure of Fox News host Tucker Carlson certainly did not, and The New York Times has a story on the Trump reaction. That's right, Nathan. After the firing of Tucker Carlson became public, the station newsmax had an interview with the former president in which he said, I'm surprised I'm shocked, I think Tucker's been terrific. He's been especially over the last year or so. He's been terrific to me. And then we also had reaction from the president's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., he said the decision was mind-blowing, and he thinks it changes things permanently, adding that Carlson was an actual thought leader in conservatism and a once in a generation type talent. The reunion, so to speak of the former president and Tucker Carlson comes after the revelation of text messages, part of discovery in the dominion lawsuit case. Some of these text messages that were surfaced in which Tucker Carlson said that he hated Trump passionately and referred to him as a demonic force, but a source tells The New York Times when the two got on the phone together. They patched things up and have since become regular Friends communicating back and forth. That's according to The New York Times. All right, turning from the times to The Wall Street Journal and exclusive story there on Nike cofounder Phil knight and another big donation to his company's hometown. That's right, Nathan. The thing is, for Phil knight, Portland is personal to him because it's not just the headquarters of Nike, he's a Portland native and now according to The Wall Street Journal, knight and his wife penny are giving $400 million to rebuild Portland's albina area. It's a historically black community where residents have experienced decades of strife and displacement. The project to rebuild albina is being called the 1803 fund, and that number references the year that Lewis and Clark decided to bring a frontiersman and slave known as York with them across the country, so the donation arrives as Portland is going through its own upheaval, there is a boom in crime, also we saw many protests in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd there. So mister knight tells the paper, I think it can lift the community and it can give the whole city hope that's my ambition. All right, our last minute here, Steve, let's turn to The Economist and a story on the impact of Russia's war in Ukraine on the black market. That's right, according to The Economist, there is a man named Alexander hotel north. He runs a smuggling museum in the port city of Odessa. He says, according to The Economist, that the corridor, the port of Odessa, has been a corridor for contraband since the 18th century, and according to the paper citing the global initiative against transnational organized crime, think tank, it refers to Odessa as part of the strongest criminal ecosystem in Europe. Interesting thing here though, we've learned from this story that for organized crimes, sometimes patriotism can Trump profits because one told the paper, we are thieves, we are against any state, but we decided we are for Ukraine. And if you're interested in other unique museums, I highly recommend the museum of failure in New York, which actually has a whole section dedicated to some of former president Trump's business ventures, Nathan. Wow. We'll leave it there. Bloomberg Steve rapoport with the look at the morning front pages this morning. Up next here on Bloomberg daybreak, the latest on the breaking news, President Biden's reelection bid is now official. Plus, we're keeping an eye on UBS shares still falling after earnings. That's coming up in our 6 30 news. First

"I'm afraid in your condition. You've got about three weeks to live. What? I've got three weeks to live. Are you shitting me? Hi, I'm Rachel Hampton, and I'm nadir Goff and you're listening to ICU IMI. In case you missed it, slate's podcast about Internet culture. Oh my God. Hello. Welcome back. It's been eons. I know it's been an eternity. I missed you so much. Thanks for having me back. Same. I missed you so much. I missed you dearly. And I'm especially without their joining us because we've had some big news since the last time you were on. You been promoted. Everyone say congratulations in the dera. Oh, thank you. Yes, I am officially associate writer of culture at slate dot com. Wow, are you sure it's not like cultures are and chief, 'cause that's how I think of you. You know, I didn't say it, you did. So you got promoted in November, correct? I did. I did indeed. So it's kind of a holiday surprise, no. You could say that, yeah. So I feel like your first real, your first real period of time as a culture writer is right in the midst of all this culture content. And I admittedly have not been keeping up with what's going on in the realm of holiday related content. I really only watch. You know those rankin bass stop motions. Yes, this movie is like Santa Claus is coming to town. And I do love those. I love those so much. I look forward to them every single year. Keep my snow miserable. I'm mister white Christmas. I'm mister snow. I'm mister knight. I'm a mister ten. Friends call me snow. So, but that's those are very old. What's new? What do I need to be keeping up with? What have I missed? Okay, so I don't know that there's necessarily let me put it this way. I don't think the new stuff can really compete with some of the older stuff. But I can give you just sort of collection of some of my overall favorites. Favorite films, let's say. Let's stick with a specific genre, because if we get into favorite Christmas music and albums, that's a whole different conversation. But favorite Christmas films, I have a ton of them. Christmas and the holiday season. It's one of my favorite genres of film. So one that is recent that I did write about was the new Lindsay Lohan movie falling for Christmas. Okay, how is it? Okay, the movie is actually not that bad. And I love me some Lindsay Lohan. I am Stan. I think she's. Yes, she's iconic and I really enjoyed watching her be able to just do her thing in this movie. What I wrote about was that I wish that they gave her character a little bit more to deal with than the literal same character arc, all of her past characters have been dealing with. But at the same time, I'm just happy to see her. She can do whatever she wants on my TV, and I'm fine with that, you know? Love me some Lindsay. So falling for Christmas, I would recommend, especially if you just want a very lighthearted romp that you don't have to think about. Well, all of these are lighthearted romps that you don't have to think about because I'm not trying to think in the holiday time. So one of my other favorites well actually let's go to two of my other favorites also rom coms are the last holiday starring Queen Latifah. That's one of my all yes. Christmas movies ever. I was like, did they make a new laugh holiday? 'cause I was like, oh, no, no, no, that movie slabs. Yes. It is so good. Good. I never wanted to go. Yes. Listen, I have never wanted to blow all of my money and go on a very expensive vacation to somewhere in the middle of cold, bumble fuck Prague. I've never truly. I love that movie so much. I feel like we should describe what happens in this movie because we're just yelling and coherently. Okay, so in this movie, Queen Latifah, she has, well, two things are going on at the same time, right? She loves to cook. She cooks at home while watching people like Emeril on TV. I know, listen, out here. And then she also has this sort of, will they won't they relationship with one of her coworkers, who's played by el cool J? And she works in the kitchen section of a big department store. So she finds out that she has a terminal illness, and she's going to die in a few months. I mean, of course, the whole shenanigan is that there was actually something wrong with the machine. And so there's a whole C plot where the doctor is trying to return and tell her that she's not actually going to die. But she thinks she's going to die. And so she decides that she's going to blow all of her savings and go on this very, very expensive, super high class vacation to this 5 star resort restaurant in the middle of some European country. I was going to say, I think it's near a Prague. You know, if not Prague itself. So yeah, so she does that. And while she's at the hotel, she has this just lovely experience. Where she meets all of these people and she finds herself worth and she changes all these people's lives for the better because she's honest with them because they all think that she's rich because she's blowing all this money. Right. And so they feel like, oh, this is someone I should pay attention to, but because she's just, you know, Queen Latifah from the block, she's just telling about themselves and they're all just like, wow, I haven't had someone be this honest with me in years. You really are just like an amazing woman. Smokey Robinson isn't it? Smokey Robinson is in it, and I also want to give a small shout out to Alicia witt, who you might not know who she is just by name, but if you look up her picture, you will be like, oh yes, I've seen her. She's one of those actresses who's in literally everything. Like she has been in everything, and I feel like she doesn't get enough credit. And so shout out to Alicia witch. She's also in that movie. Okay. Okay, so what's the next one? Okay, two more quick ones. We'll just say the quickest one is Groundhog Day. Starring Bill Murray, classic. We all know why it's great. I want to talk about holiday in handcuffs. I want to talk about the Mario Lopez mobile. Yeah, I was like film. Family movie? Yes, the ABC Family movie holiday in handcuffs. I have only seen commercials for this because it comes on on the ABC Family slash free form 25 days of Christmas. Lineup. Rachel, you've never seen holidays. Okay, we must. The result of diet and activity. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. It's 11 times the diameter of earth and more massive than all the other planets combined. Jupiter grew so large because it was born far from the sun. At that distance, it was cold enough for the planet's growing center to incorporate a lot of ice in addition to rock, so it grew big and heavy. And that gave it a strong gravitational pull. Jupiter used that gravity to suck in a lot of hydrogen and helium gas that were left over from the birth of the sun. Gas that wasn't available closer to the sun. "You're so cool 'cause you're president. I remember. Yeah, that's a Trump card right there. And I'm like, oh, Dolly Parton constantly taking my Pakistan married. Jeez, I'm a wonderful person. Where are you from, man? I'm from Indiana. And so he's got his Indianapolis. That was one of the ways that Jenny and I connected online 'cause that's a big Houston Texans fan. We're in the same division. So it's funny because, you know, I grew up in Indiana went to school at a place called depaul university, which was a free catch. Not the one with the L in Chicago. It's a smaller one. But, you know, and then I couldn't wait to get out of there. I'm like, I'm getting out of here. I'm moving, I can't put this place in my rearview mirror. I moved to LA. And I was like, that's not so bad. You know, so it's one of those places I appreciate as the years have gone by and my folks still live there and it's kind of a great I've got an 11 year old son and so we take him back there for a little country living and I appreciate it much more now for sure. Yeah. When you strike me as like a real like you're more of a dudes dude than I am for sure, which anybody basically. But like no, I shouldn't have explained when I said that Eric's achieves fan. He was a cult. I knew that. Okay, I didn't know. I'm still not great. But I watched a Tony Awards the other night and I thought of you because I just watched the first one was to see Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Oh, yeah. Hell of a win. But yeah, Danny, you're not. It's not like I'm not like a, you know, I enjoy, I enjoy a good match. You like to watch the sports. I watch the sports at least up until the intermission. Yeah. Camaraderie. Are you in New Jersey guy? Is that what you have? I grew up liking the Giants and I also grew up liking sadly the next. Which was in Les mis. And I was like, the very first baseball game I ever went to, which I don't really remember that much as I was like four years old, but I just had I was at Shea stadium for the 69 mets. What? 69. Yeah, 69, 9. Nice, nice. But yeah, so I like them that. That 86 series is one of the like, that was like a year where it was like, basically, I think giants won the mets one and then Syracuse went to the finals only to lose to Indiana. Syracuse is your Alma mater too. Here's my Alma mater, so I was not a huge fan of mister knight, but I wasn't either if I'm honest see what's a real prick. Although I did like the movie, I like the movie hoosiers quite a bit. Now we're talking best sports movie of all time. No question. He was a chore. Oh man, and he was a God in Indiana. Oh, I still use for some people, but you know, I always was like, how does he even as a kid? I'm like, how does it get away with this stuff? It was just a grouchy asshole. Yeah. Well, that's it. But there's a movie called blue chips. Oh, I can't believe that. Okay. Fucking amazing. It's one of my favorites. Right? It holds up. It holds up. It holds up amazing. It's a movie where Nick Nolte basically plays this Bobby Knight character..

"Ada blackjack brings a cup of tea to her lips and a sprawling living room and mcminnville Oregon. Sitting across from her are John and Georgia knight, Lorne knight's parents. His younger brother Joseph sits to her right. They all stare at blackjack. They describe their house as old and modest, but to blackjack, it feels like a mansion. She knows they're waiting for her to speak, but she doesn't know what to say. It's early December 1923. Blackjack has been back from wrangel for over three months, but on some days, it doesn't feel like she's fully returned. There's a gnawing hunger that never goes away. And she's always cold. At night, she still sees knights thin face, blood dripping from his nose and mouth. Georgia, Lauren's mother, sets down her teacup and smiles at blackjack. What were the other men like? Blackjack takes a deep breath. Stealing herself to answer. They were all very nice, good, handsome men, mister knight was also a very good man. He had the hardest time of any of them. Georgia delicately wipes a tear from her eye. How long was he sick? For a long time, he hid it. He didn't want anyone to know. Black Jack sneaks a look at her hosts. They're looking at the floor. A million emotions playing across their faces. Blackjack reaches into her bag and removes the Bible. I brought this for you. Georgia gasps. That was his grandfather's Lorne loved that Bible. I read from it every day. It kept me alive. Mister knight lent it to me, and I promised I would return it to you. John reaches forward and takes the Bible. He rubs the cover, then looks at blackjack, and hands it back. You keep it. Thank you for taking care of our son. Blackjack hugs the Bible to her chest, crying. She stays with the night family for a week, sharing more details about her time on wrangel island. John and Georgia ask blackjack and Bennett to move in with them. But blackjack declines. She doesn't want to live with the constant reminders of what she went through. After surviving two years in one of earth's most desolate places, Ada blackjack is ready to move on. Ready to be a mother to Bennett and help him heal. Ready to build a better life for the two of them. Ready.

"Ada blackjack starts a fire in the stove. The fire went out during the night, and it's a cold morning. So she looks forward to the warmth. It's August 20th, 1923, about a week since the storm that blew away her umay. Afterward, blackjack was so depressed that she spent three days in bed. But finally, she got tired of feeling sorry for herself. A few days ago, she got up and built a new boat. She's not exactly her usual self. There's a bone, deep, exhaustion. She can't shake. But the feeling of despair has subsided. She hears a weird rumbling sound in the distance. She steps away from the crackle of the fire, to listen more closely. She hears it again and looks down at Vic, who has her ears perked up, relax Vic. It's just a walrus. Now that the fire is lit, she starts making breakfast. She pours seal oil into a pot and takes some dried duck out from the cupboard. Vic rubs against her feet, begging for a piece. Blackjack gives her a tiny bit. She hears the same sound again, but louder, repeating at a steady clip. This time, she freezes. And her eyes go wide. That's not a walrus. She grabs her binoculars and charges out of the tent. She climbs up the ladder to her observation platform, and aims her binoculars towards the ocean. But she can't see anything through the thick, soupy fog. She frantically looks back and forth, desperate to find out what's making the sound. She has a guess, but she's trying not to get her hopes up. A gust of wind shifts the fog. And then she sees it. Hazy and faint, but clearly visible just offshore. The mast of a ship. She slings the binoculars over her shoulder and leaps from the platform, landing on the tundra with a thud. She sprints toward the beach, the binoculars thumping against her side. When she reaches the ocean, she charges into it, splashing through the waves. Her legs go numb in the freezing cold water. But she doesn't care. An unac emerges from the fog, being rowed by a handful of Inuit men. Behind them sits a white man, a parka hood over his head. She can't make out his face. But she sure she knows who it is. She grins and yells out. Gayle. But as the boat grows closer, she sees that the white man is not Milton Gale, with his round cheeks and bright eyes. The man is older, with deeply lying in his face. The reaches her and the man offers his hand. I'm Harold noyce, captain of the Donaldson. Why isn't mister Gale with you? Where's mister Crawford and mister moorer? Noyce looks at her. Surprised. I thought they were here on the island. Blackjack shakes her head. A feeling of dread spreading through her. There's nobody here but me. I'm all alone. What about Lorne knight? Black Jack looks down. Mister knight died on June 23rd. She can no longer hold her tears back. They gushed down her cheeks. Her knees feel weak. I want to see my son. Can you take me back to nome? Yes, of course. Black Jack's legs fall out from under her. She almost ends up falling into the water, but noise catches and holds her. It's over. You're going home. All blackjack can do is cry. Ada blackjack steps onto a dock in the harbor of nome Alaska. She has a small bag of belongings on her back and Vic in her arms. The sounds of men yelling, hoisting sails and loading supplies pierce her ears. The sheer number of people is overwhelming. It's August 31st, 1923. Blackjack has just spent the last 8 days on board the Donaldson in a small cabin. After captain noyce arrived at the island, she spent three more days on wrangel. Noyce and his crew buried lord knight's body. Erecting a simple wooden cross to mark the grave. Noyce packed up all the records he could find, including knights and black jacks diaries to give to Wilhelm or Stephenson. Blackjack's secretly stowed night's Bible in her bag. She promised to return it tonight's parents herself. Blackjack remains frozen on the dock. She feels dizzy. Everything is moving so fast. Then she hears someone calling her name. Over here. Black Jack sees her sisters and their husbands walking towards her. Peeking out shyly from behind one sister is a young boy. Blackjack gasps. He's taller and his face is more angular, but he's unmistakably Bennett. Black Jack snaps out of her trance and rushes over. She hands Vic off to one of her sisters and throws her arms around her son. Bennett remains still for a long time. And then it's like a dam breaks. He clutches her jacket with all his strength and cries. Blackjack rests her head on top of his..

"Ada blackjack huddles in a small igloo on the edge of camp, desperately trying to stay warm. It's mid December, 1921. Outside a blizzard rages. She peers out the entrance of the igloo. She can barely make out the smoke from the wood burning stove in the winter house. She wishes she was in there, warming her hands by the fire. But yesterday, Lauren knight banished her to the igloo. His latest punishment for her refusal to sew. Black Jack's hands ache in their mittens. She tries to wiggle her fingers, but they're stiff and sore. She can barely move them. She'll have frostbite soon. Maybe this is where she'll die. When the storm subsides, night will find her body blue and covered in frost. At that thought, adrenaline jolts through her. A thought enters her mind with shocking clarity. She doesn't want to die. She wants to live even here on this terrible island. She pulls her hood as tight as she can around her head. And charges out into the snow. The wind howls in her ears. The gusts push her left and right. Snow whips into her face, stinging her cheeks and sticking to her eyelashes. She plots forward, hoping she's heading in the right direction. At last, her feet hit against the blocks of snow the men have used to insulate the winter house. She calls out. Mister knight, mister Gayle, let me in. The door opens and night looks out. Bundled up in his reindeer parka. He eyes her warily. For a moment, blackjack worries, he won't let her in. But he stands back, granting her entrance. Inside the main tent, Milton Gale lies in his sleeping bag. Crawford and murr are still away at the trapping camp. Blackjack doesn't say a word to either of the two men. She had straight for the stove and extends her hands. After a few minutes, feeling starts to come back to them. She senses night looming behind her. If you want to stay in here, you have to sew. Otherwise, you're going back outside. Blackjack bristles. But then, she stops. She looks night in the eye. What should I make? Gloves and socks. Blackjack nods and gets to work. She sews all the way through dinner without stopping. And as she pushes the needle and thread through the fox fur. She.

"Again. As shown what's making headlines in today's news media. The financial review is reporting that woolworths is replacing a key measure of retail productivity when selling bonuses for managers instead it wants to include a reputation score. The idea is that it will help rebuild trust in the supermarket, which has been plagued by wage underpayments. Also, the media is reporting this morning that the Morrison government will force state and territory leaders to abandon lockdowns saying that $1.5 billion in emergency Commonwealth support for affected workers and businesses will be turned off two weeks after inoculation rates heat 80%, and finally the sitting morning Herald is reporting that the New South Wales nationals has backed new climate change targets to cut the state emissions in half by 2030. Okay, running through some of the other stories around yesterday and this morning, the big battery fire in Victoria in July was caused by a cooling system Lake according to Victoria's safety regulator. The Tesla battery fire was exacerbated by protective systems being turned off at the time, certainly wouldn't help. It was the first major incident at a utility scale battery in Australia. And there were fears that could derail the growth in batteries, though fortunately, the regulator has given the all clear for the unit to start operating again. Michael the boss of Domino's in Australia and New Zealand and Nick knight will step down. Mister knight used to deliver pizzas and he ended up owning a store and rose through the ranks. His replacement David Burnett has pretty much the same background. That's one of the things I love about domino is in one of the factors in its incredible success. Many of the top executives, including CEO Don may, started as either delivery people or franchise owners. They know the business back to front, and that's really served the business world as it's grown. Yeah, it's an amazing success story and Don may actually spoke to you last year on fear and grade. And you can still find the interview on our website fear and grade calm today, well worth a listen that one. Michael, I just got to say some of the cross promotion in today's episode has been excellent. I think we've got three mentions so far. It's pretty impressive, isn't it?.
