Biden's tax plan together now awesome knows about marginal tax rates and that biden only plans to raise taxes on households that make over four hundred thousand dollars a year critical thinking for the win. "Feel right at home. Well, by the way, I told you yesterday that I hated the way the entire thing was set up and you said we were going to make this happen. So I appreciate you because obviously we're all big fans of yours and I I don't want hey I don't want to put handcuffs on our conversation. We can only talk for twelve minutes because I don't like your brain and if we could. We get go here. That's locking. Talk. Let's go. How'd you do the ten questions? Brian what's this all about? How did this get started were just like, Hey, you know what's a cool segment ten questions with people I'm a good interviewer. Let's get some good guests and launches thing this by yourself or is this with a company is the NFL launch and answer what is it now it's GonNa do the NFL I had I could be the guy who just comes out and says, Hey, new podcast everybody check it out like there's too many damn podcast this many. So I don't have either the platform or probably the talent to be here's why a podcast I'd talk. And I have a friend come on and we just shoot the crap and that's it and subscribed. So I made a game it's like a game where it's a trivia show and I asked each guest's like ten questions and they get a point or they don't, and at the end they get a score you leave with a two out of ten or nine ten and people are super super competitive like we had rogers and we had called Rudd ant man and like run wanted to beat Rogers like I'm not leaving unless I beat writer score it's funded and I don't WanNa give it away but I assume Aaron one. You might assume rock. Man I gotTa tell you before I got Outta here. I came up with a couple of questions for you that I would like to ask I like to put you in the hot seat. Just a couple. Okay. What's I'm GonNa do it yeah I don't do. We go I got two questions to see how you do, and then I'll reveal how there's some how attached to your life. They're not just random your first category cheese professional wrestling. Let's go magazine what legendary ww Asan Era Wrestler bragged about being the perfect athlete. All Its curt Hennig. Mr Perfect Curt Haning is that your answer? Yeah. You're. Right mack. Now, this is important though in the in the aftermath, we're like, why am I ask You my knowledge just wrestling? Says the perfect athlete Pat. You've been around some ridiculous athletes who is the greatest athlete you've ever been around I'm GonNa say this not just because he was on the show the last two days Darius. Butler is the smoothest athlete I've ever seen in my entire life. He was a corner for a he was drafted by the Patriots he liked Corner Frost and he moved to safety he could do anything the guy could do absolutely I think honestly, and this is not just because he's My friend I've just seen him play basketball against other guys that are good basketball I think he could have went to the NBA if he really wanted to I think Darius Butler potentially best athletes version but then on the flip side while giving that answer I thought about Shane, telling me to punt the ball into the stands because tyreek hill would catch and run right past me before I even got my head up. So I there's a lot out there but they're like deboer lodge. Figured you just say your Reggie Wayne or somebody like that. You've been around Butler is an awesome answer. You GotTa know corners are normally right by all accounts. Everybody knows like the corners of the best athletes on the field because they have to Mir the best athletes on the field. Now, Julio Jones their specimens play wide receiver and there's obviously Reggie Wayne incredibly intelligent and athletes. If the NFL you're great athlete but corners are normally the people that are. I don't want to. Talk about is the best athletes, but it's kind of like understood like that guy right there. That's why if any of them have a strain or anything, it's a big deal because it's like they're going to get exposed out there because you're on an island debate would be the guide say but then I saw tyreek hill one, four one or something like that. Almost past my face. So I mean there's a lot out there now but I'm one for one right now. You are one for one. Now, the show is ten questions, but I just have to for you. Pat. So this is you're gonNA take it home a right now the pro wrestling category was wheelhouse I took it easy on you your next category maybe not so much. This category for question two is board games I in the Classic Board Game Clue that each character is assigned a color that matches their name which character is assigned purple. The. Stupid Lady John John Lee. CHARLOTTE CHARLOTTE'S News scarlet scarlet. It's obviously scarlet in that is a game that my family played nightly. We're big into the glue thing. So that is something I understand why you'd ask me that question because that ties into my life I'd go scarlet brand is that accurate? He says Miss. Scarlet Impact is not correct. Miss Scarlet assigned read Professor Plum Wine Purple is professor. Stink. Come in here come in your afterwards side with Professor Blah. Blah need to hear that YOU STINK UTAH. Everybody's offense connective tissue there is you went to high school. Also I like your show. This is a good sean it's a little different. So I read the story and you've probably told I haven't indulge me. You ran up a bunch of money from gambling and entered the kicker competition, and that's how Western found. Awesome. Yeah. It's pretty cool. It's a movie I'm from Pittsburgh right so it's a lot of Italians law too many times someone say some say too many Italians but there's a great culture good food and there's also some other things that come with a lot of Italians being around and that was back when the world series of poker was huge cal that was back when Chris moneymaker the Slob from Zuri just one, seven, million dollars. And everybody that was my type of neighborhood across the country. It was like, Oh that could be us. So we had games all over the town k. all over plum gets Ataman Garages they would have them in their living rooms. There was a Lotta Poker Games and I was incredibly lucky as people have watched my life I am a very, very lucky human big. So the cards would come like I. I, didn't read Texas Dolly's. Poker. Book like I I watched some guys but it was just like I always had to believe it's coming like if I was ready to poker book, it was it's coming whatever card you need. It is coming and people hated playing with me obviously but I was good..

"And we're back all right so my main issue or one of my main issues with the movie is the violence that is enacted against women. Which so okay. So this is a movie where there's a lot of cartoony but still pretty brutal violence that happens to a lot of different characters of all genders such as a bunch of people are murdered. But but it's done to event is different. It's different women are assaulted physically or sexually to a greater extent and it sometimes like not even as a murder. Sometimes it's just as a sight gag exactly where there's a few examples. Yeah so I have a list of examples. Head professor plum grabs Miss Scarlet at the very beginning. His own insert shot so UAE. Is I guess to establish that. He is horny because we later find out his back story of having his medical license being revoked because a assaulted his female patients. Which again like you mentioned. Jamie is played as a joke for the most part. Then he continues to assault women throughout the movie Yep Mr Body grabs events ass dinner. Mrs Peacock is screaming after she thinks she might have been poisoned. And Mr Green slaps her across the face and then he goes like what I had to get her to stop screaming and then later Wadsworth slapped her again when he's recreating that moment with his little recap. Yeah with Caitlin Caitlin has never slapped someone during a recap for the record. is true but yeah. I mean I I. I think that there's a few moments there where it's just like the joke is like women be hysterical Right there's a lot of like moments of I mean there's a few moments where men are screaming but it's far outnumbered by like usually Mrs Peacock but also it's it's the Event in one point. But it's just like women be hysterical is is alive and well in this movie right. Women be overreacting women. Be Women be fainting. We have several different. It's I think it's mostly Mrs Peacock but she faints a number of times. Then we see the cook. She pretty early in the story gets murdered. Her dead body is lugged and dragged around dropped trampled on. They also mock her body as well like they make. It seem like she's really difficult to lift interest. So like I mean. There's only two people of Color in this movie and they're both killed almost instantly and to add insult to injury. The Cook does not even get a name and they like make fun of her. They body shame her corpse air. Just like what on totally? Because she's a plus size woman in the movie goes out of its way to show how difficult it is for the other characters to like. Lift her and carry her and she's like yeah she's totally body shamed even after her death and it's horrible. Yeah but it's a very body normative casting process so it's very like it's very agreed as the way that that's presented for sure a few more examples on this list is that The characters are looking at colonel. Mustards compromising sex photos. And Mrs White Says No one can get into that position and professor plum's like sure they can let me show you and then he grabs Mrs way kind of pushes her down on a couch and then gets on top of her to demonstrate this thing and she's like Get off of me. Always see professor plum rest. His hand on the cooks but Again after she's dead. Yeah for no reason just just to a visual jokes. I guess there's a yeah I mean I think most of the like assaults on women in in the I mean. None of them are not jokes. They're all they're all jokes it the logic very like this is how you treat women but added an eleven right yeah And then there was. I think one more than I notice. Which is that Colonel Mustard and miss scarlet are searching the house together. They go into a dark room and he's like what room is this and she says. Search me as in like I don't know but then he starts groping her and she has to be like get your mitts off of me so yeah it's just women being assaulted constantly and then I would argue and there's a whole conversation to be had about Mr Green's sexuality but except for in the third ending when they they like undo him being a queer man right you assume from all the movie that he is gay because he identifies himself as such but I would argue that. He is also more brutalized than the other straight male characters. There's a bunch of scenes where like there again. There's a lot of scenes. Were like a lot of the characters are being rough with each other right but I feel like Mr Greene gets the worst of it because you see that scene where you know. Wadsworth his dragging him around throwing him down on the floor during the recap and he's also slapped twice yet by two different men. At the end of the second ending I feel like that is supposed to like directly imply that you would treat a queer man the way you would treat a woman just yet. The only part of I mean it's Mr Green's character. I mean it's just it's complicated. It's weird I mean there's one yeah there you're right there's one ending where they totally undo it and they're like just kidding no homo and that's like the ending joke of that version of the movie. Because he says like I'm an F. B. I. Plant and I'm going to go home and have sex with my wife because I couldn't tell if that was if that was undoing it or if that was him like lying to his co workers. I wasn't sure what we were all. I didn't even consider that. I thought maybe that the way I interpreted it although. I think that it's easily interpreted your way as well was that he because he says at the beginning like I'm a gay man. I am not ashamed of this But if my workplace finds out I'll be fired and at the end in front of all his co workers so I thought eight gotTa go have sex with my wife by that. Very well could be the case. My interpretation of it was that like in this is maybe just like my Bechtol. Goggles like clouding my vision. A little too much sometimes being very cynical but I was like oh because he's allowed to be the hero and this version of the story. They're not going to allow him to be gay. His Declaration of being a gay man is was revoked listeners. Sound off yeah. There's different ways to look at it. I guess I'll optimistically hope that he is lying. Just kidding. I'm going home to my communist boyfriend. I hope that too but yeah no I do agree. That he's like treated physically different than me. Identified Hetero guys in in the story It's it's frustrating because it's like nine hundred eighty five. We have a queer character who it's not coded they state it. There's no shame involved with it but even in that scene where he says like I'm not ashamed of it. You cut to three different characters. Who clearly think it's gross for sure Where everyone's like. Ooh What and then and then. It's kind of like every every like suspect character. You don't just there's too many you can't spend that much time with them But then it Kinda like disappeared. I don't know I don't like I like that choice for a character. And like in the era they choose to set the movie in which they did not have to but like they do. I like that. There's quite representations I just don't like that how it unfolds and how it's really handled so it's it stinks. The I like thirty seconds of it is like really cool and then it becomes not calling anymore because an in addition to him saying like I feel no guilt or shame about that. The movie allows him to come out himself. Like because Wadsworth is he's outing everyone else's wrongdoings or whatever it is. They're being blackmailed. Four and then finally comes to Mr Green and he stands up and he's like here's my thing so like no one else him. He's the only person that's done. Nothing wrong also. Exact totally right but yet he like he comes out himself. No one out Tim because like Wadsworth was revealing. Everyone else secrets but Mr Greene comes out himself so the fact that he was the movie allows him to do. That was interesting and unexpected for me and I kind of wonder because there are so many drafts of the script. It's kind of impossible to track who that belong to. Anthony was a queer writer Mike. Maybe that's an Anthony Perkins thing. I don't know I wonder. I wonder but Queer visibility in the movie clue but yeah I I'd be interested to hear what our listeners think about that. And if you have any additional insights let us know we already touched on the very limited number of of people of Color in the movie. The Cook the COP are the only two they not given actual names. They're both minor characters who were killed not long after we meet them. They didn't need to kill the COP. Like I was like bummed. I was bummed out And I always am Bob. Dot that they. Because he's such a fun character he enters and it's kind of fun to have like a bumbling cop character who's like everything looks fine to me and everyone's like you know humping corpses and it's funny and he's just having a good time right so it's so funny he's like just man's drunk dead drunk dead right. Yeah there's there's so much dumb wordplay in this movie I like it. Yeah there is no. I don't think that character needed to diet. And he like that's a fun character to keep in the mix for the rest of the movie sure. Yeah Yeah and then. Let's not forget the reveal that Mrs Peacock's favorite recipe was monkey brains quote though popular in Cantonese cuisine are not often found in Washington. Dc or whatever. Yeah so just a racist little detail. That absolutely didn't need to be there. Yeah this movie. It's weird because it's like this movie is very of its time. And then it's also very of the Nineteen Fifty S. So it's just like two eras that Don't fare well for most people that are not straight white guys in one movie Tim Curry can't say it enough though. He's Great Oh love him. Things facts about there. There was a a pretty good Oral history style piece about clue that came out I think in two thousand thirteen that just kind of tracks. There's not. There's not a lot of you know wildness behind the scenes of this movie. It was written and rewritten by a bunch of different men. A bunch of writers. Quit the point where the director had to finish it. The closest thing I could find any controversy behind the scenes was the costuming Jonathan. Lynn definitely needlessly Had his female actors where really constrictive courses. During the course of which is like wasn't even a thing in the fifties really. So what is this titanic rice? Doing up roses corset..

"On the cast questions asked movies have women and all their discussions boyfriends and husbands or do they have individualism. The Patriarchy start changing with the deck Adele cash. I know who did it? Who Was it it was Caitlyn in the bedroom with the microphone but it dooming recorded a podcast because if so then yes. It was me who did it. Yes and I passed the Bekdil test. Welcome to the back door. 'cause Jamie Loftus. My name is Caitlin Toronto and this is our feminist movie podcast where we use the Bechtel. Test as a jumping off point to analyze famous movies. Were were in the quarantine zone as everyone at this point So you know. I don't know I don't remember life before this anymore. I don't either. Yeah so we had hinted at possibly doing this movie during our national treasure episode. Right because we're just trying to stick to the romps we're trying to sink to the rams I feel like it's particularly fitting in the quarantine because it's a movie pretty much exclusively taking place in one location one house. No one really leaves some people come in and then they die theirself. Yeah and that's what you get when it's a metaphor. They weren't wearing masks when they came in and they didn't wash their hands. They did not. They didn't know when you don't see anyone wash a single hand and the House looks not. It's old it's inherently dirty and there's a doctor present. He should know better. He should be telling people literally someone from the World Health Organization there and and not like scrub scrub big issues. Big problems obviously there. That's just the beginning of the critiques. Only talking about today like I who done it. So this'll be a fun episode But I we should tell you what the Bechtol test is. Sugar Caitlyn dear. Remember what it is. No it is slipping my mind. If memory serves it is a medium metric sometimes called the Bechtel. Wallace test requires that two female identifying characters have to have names such as Mrs Peacock. Oh Miss Scarlet. Mrs White. The Cook the nameless Cook They have to speak to each other and conversation cannot be about a man. I want to see if we can figure out a the Bechtel test version of the of crimes. Here here's a pitch. Okay please. Yeah if two women with names commit a crime that has nothing to do with a man if passes the buck test. Crime addition crime edition. Yeah I'm into that right. I don't think that any of the crimes would pass the Bechtel test. Crime addition in this movie. Yeah in this particular movie where it's it's usually connected to a husband or something like ten with Miss Scarlett was like men were always tangential to what was happening for sure. You know. We'VE GOT TO DO BETTER. GotTa do better crimes. Although if the crimes are committed against men who are behaving badly that that's okay to me. I now by men should be stolen from and like that's true but then most of the women in them of everyone in this movie is basically bad true. Sear like okay. Everyone's bridge so that's not you know except for the cook who And we don't even get to know what her name is you know. She's the only woman of Color in the movie too. Yeah and killed and made fun of book. Jonathan Lynn. God Damn it alright. Well we have a lot to talk about and no guests today just us today so the gals Jamie. What is your relationship? History with the movie clue. I liked this movie. I didn't see it like when I was growing up or anything like that but I've seen it. I think a good comfort movie I love who done it and thrillers and stuff like that Comedy who done. It's right up my alley. I think I've seen it like yeah like three or four times. I re watched it most recently after seeing knives out which I think I mean. I was not alone here but I watched or re-watch a ton of who-done-its after knives out came out. Because I really really liked knives out same I loved it so yeah there I am A. I'm a clue hat. I'M A whodunit head. What about you? I also didn't grow up with it but saw it some time. I think in like my late teen years for the first time And I think it was just that once that I saw I remember thinking it was fun but like I also. I didn't play the game really at all ever growing up. I think maybe play the game. Not Heavily We're GONNA Operation Kid. Yeah I was a scrabble. Kid also smart. That's smart kid culture. Well it's why I went onto later. Get a master's degree in screenwriting which I hate to bring up but there it is us one degree heads were just poking at the guys like liver and operation. They're like he's dead. I forgot I forgot how that game more. It's more or less it. If you lose operation. Does he die? Oh that's Yeah. What are the stakes? I don't lose does a man die. That's really dark. I'd actually don't remember. I haven't played Jamie. I played a Shrek version of operation. Oh I forgot about that. It was right before I had my sludge surgery For those of you. Who Don't know what I'm talking about. Get WITH THE PROGRAM. Whole podcast about that grow up. I had my gallbladder removed But I was told that I had sludge my gallbladder anyway. It was a whole thing but the Shrek so you perform operations on Shrek. Yeah and right. Around where a person or ogres gallbladder would be it. Said like slugs looked not unlike sludge. And you had to remove the slugs out of his gallbladder area and it was like so the Shrek operation game was kind of like an oracle for you. Exactly I never forget Shrek. Actually I don't now that we're talking about. I think it only played the clue board game proper a few times but I did my cousins. Had Simpson's clue. Oh and so that was I just like Mr burned dead. That's it it was fun. It's a fun game and it's a fun movie. I'm excited to talk about it. Yeah and this whole genre. I do love who done it. Indeed an also I know we'll probably go through all of them but for if in case you're not familiar with the stick of this movie there's three different endings And so if you went to theaters in one thousand nine hundred five you would have seen one of the three endings. But in the in the cut that we that they distribute now you just eat three endings in a row and kind of like none of them make sense or satisfying true So that's part of the thing. Yes indeed So should I recap it somehow? I don't this is. This is a difficult movie. Do it up. But I'll do what I can think. Yes same we have no guest mucking up the place today so we should be fine. No disrespect to all of our wonderful. What if this was the what if we did have a guest and they tried to murder. Wow things I don't know if Everyone else but my mental state is unraveling Ohio deteriorating rapidly. Really having some weird thought Weird Weird yes. Yeah well there with us. Okay Yep so. The movie clue starts where in New England of or heard of it. It's nineteen fifty four the year that my mother was born. Shout out to Lori. Hi Lori it's dark and stormy night and Wadsworth the Butler played by Tim. Curry our king an icon. Also the the second most popular. Tim Curry movie. That starts on a dark and stormy night in a mansion way the other one being oh rocky horror. Oh my gosh yeah. He's all about that. Darkens stormy mansion yet. Tim Curry he does just kind of look like he belongs in a dark and stormy mansion. This makes sense it does make sense. Yeah he arrives at the mansion. Because there's a dinner party that night he and other staff members are making preparations He checks in on the made AK Yvette. Then he checks in with the cook guests. Start Arriving They've all received a letter from a man who lives at the mansion question mark and has invited them to this dinner party He has given them all alias so when the guests arrive they are addressed as colonel mustard. He gets there. First that's Martin Mole Yeah icon Jean Parmesan from arrested development So good next to arrive is Mrs White. That's Madeline Kahn. Then Mrs Peacock played I Lean Brennan in your second year. Like Susan Serandon. Because you're so used to seeing her in. Tim Curry Movies about dark and stormy nights. But it's not her see. I think Miss Scarlett looks like I was talking. That's why I was argument. Mrs Peacock is Has like the feathered hat. It is very hard to keep the characters name straight. There's really is I kept my notes. Might be jumbled also because most of them I would say except for Mrs Peacock have a name that is related to a color either color specifically or like right mustard yellow. Of course. There's Mr Green he shows up next. There's Mrs White Miss Scarlet that's color and then Professor Plum Plum Purple Purple but no no one wears the color of the name that they are given which is rude So then Mr Green shows up. That's Michael mckean. And then outside down the road. We have Miss Scarlet. That's Lesley Ann Warren. She has car trouble and then professor plum played by Christopher Lloyd who was having a great year in one thousand nine hundred five because this is also went back to the future came out. Yeah I think that if back to the future come up before this. He probably wouldn't be in this movie. So this is like the last chance of Christopher Lloyd and Lake as supporting supporting role in so he drives by picks up Miss Scarlet and they both arrive at the mansion and everyone sits down for dinner. But no one knows what's going on really who anybody else is but they all start chatting and they figure out that everyone has ties to Washington. Dc and it's also like the McCarthy era so you're it it took a while for me to like click in what they were doing with the historical like setting. Because I was like. Why were they going through the trouble of having this in nineteen fifty four? But it's all vaguely I'm like. He's trying to say something if so. I don't know what it is but I think they might be sort of trying to say something by setting it in the McCarthy era and it's like a bunch of Washington elite in the McCarthy era because a little later on we find out this Mr Body Guy is blackmailing everyone. Because they're like you're UNAMERICAN and instead of the riot reporting you to the like House on American Activities Committee GonNa make money capital. It's like it's very campy commentary where that's the one moment where you're like. Oh that's what they're trying to say. Okay like that and then move on in all three endings you find out that. Communism was a red herring in. It's like what are you talking about right. It's so campy that I'm like I don't know I don't know how much of it is like cabinet. How much of it is like good Americans? You know like I'd also Jonathan Linda's British so he might just be making fun of Americans in general. We don't know we don't want this movie for the message..

Let's say that another person who disappointed me was terry crews who seems to have lost all of the activism that was brewing up up in him when he was on the other side of it because he tweeted to Gabrielle. You're the Best Gabrielle. You will be missed. Wow a hey have a nice summer of tweets I say. What a Kirstie Alley Stephen Hawking? Oh Bet thanks for your input guys look up. That's tweet sense the snark in that is that you feel it while there's not snark but it's you're the Best Gabrielle. You will be missed which is just there's lack of solidarity it's lame yeah. It's so bare minimum. Especially since during Terry's assault incident. She tweeted Terry crews is a stand up guy literally one of the nicest people in our industry. He is honest kind and a true professional. I believe him and stand by Him Hashtag me too and he even gave an interview where he talked about. How while some black men met his story with ridicule judgment? He says that black women supported him the most after his sexual assault. Of course we did. Yeah so seeing that Bare Minimum Tweet to Gabrielle. It was like why even bother by the way and always remember Gabrielle Union. The time she was asked about Stacey Dash and she responded with fake incredulity and she said you mean Damon Dash. They've done a comic monologue. That seemed entirely improvised that slate. She so very funny quotes always be appreciating. Please for more the anecdotes like that you should read. We're going to eat more wine. Her memoir which is hilarious to and actually very playing it and I just hope that this this thing is resolved in a good way. Sure yeah get your money get your bag Gabrielle. Get sagged to get you your money for being fired by the way before we wrap this up. Isn't it crazy to think Simon Cowell still doing this damn thing. I think of him as a celebrity who picked in the two thousands of Y'all appreciated his anger and snarky Innis. Then Dan but it goes on he continues to do the exact same thing and we're just sort of you know over but I'm sure he's making nine figures year or something and do the winners of the shows even go on to have careers anymore or are we at the point where we're supporting them. Oh God I can't think anyone. I don't know what you win for. America's got talent if anything you go down a couple ranks a member your visa league. Say he just released his highly anticipated memoir how we fight for our our lives and to review from NPR declared Jones voice and his sensibility are so distinct that he turns one of the oldest just literary genres inside out and upside down in this memoir Sayyed has developed a one of a kind style. That is as beautiful as it. It is powerful and he has cemented himself as an essential writer for our time. Sayyed is here with me today to talk about his life his work and his remarkable new book. Say He'd welcome to design matters. Thank you for having being here now. Is it true that you often fantasize about having sex with Paul Newman's goes. We're doing it right now. That's why it's very convenient being in a very complicated relationship with a ghost because you just never know what's going on. No one can see. When did this I I think I remember probably in college college starting to see some of Paul Newman's films or films featuring him and I think that's around the time? I saw a cat on a hot tin roof. Who My goodness and what I find really truly? I mean he was very handsome. I'm certainly but also I think as far as we know he was a good man He he stood up for some really important causes that matter now you know and I think he would be part of the cultural conversation now in a very contemporary way. He was very kind had a wonderful reputation. He loved his wife. He loved his dogs. You know and it's just it's a real delight that as we see all of these men in in Hollywood now twenty nineteen. It's just like God you to your jerk your monster. You know to see this guy who was like. Oh no I'm I'm super dead. Ed and I still still pretty good. Yeah I know it's amazing. Given how handsome he was. And what a star he was star. How how much in love with his wife? He was and one of my favorite things that he's been noted to say was that when asked about why he wasn't unfaithful to Joanne Woodward his wife he said well well why would I go outside for Bologna. When I can get steak at home madly in love and recommend people reading an Helen? Peterson's writing about Out Him because of course he existed in this very controlled mediated kind of Hollywood tabloid. And and so it's like heart. Is that for real. Did he ends like like no. Yeah that was there is something to end my goodness so handsome enjoy. Those is our killer. Wow so you were born in Memphis now interesting that your mother named you say because it means happy in Arabic and it has relationships to Muslim faith and also Persian urgen history which like intermingle but yeah. Sometimes I'm told often by taxi drivers to be honest that it is good or happy and fortunate. Ah which is what my mom always said. Sometimes it's like it's like good news or leader with the good news But yeah I I mean. I've always liked my name I do remember growing up when I was very little in Memphis. The Memphis accent is such that sade in Memphis sounds like said Said and I remember being really young like kindergarten have memories of like. I wonder if my mom thought I heard ghost or something that goes to Paul Newman. Because people would say I would turn thinking they were speaking to me and then we got to Texas and like no one could say my name and it was a constant and certainly how to spell. There are a lot of spellings for the name. Say It's one of actually the most popular named in the world and then nine eleven happened and I was a sophomore in high school at that point. Well used. I used people misspelling my name. Not knowing how to say and suddenly everyone knew how to say the name Saieed lost the television show came and one of the. Yeah so it was very. It's really really interesting and I've bonded with so many people you kinda ended up naturally having to tell the story of yourself to people you know from a young age like I remember you. You know lunch ladies say that's a funny name for a little boy and and yeah I was like. I'm just trying to get my macaroni and cheese. Please but you know you have this experience from early age wjr a feeling different. Yeah I've always had this dance with at that also. I think a lot of people have put their names. Maybe you were raised by your single mom in Lewisville Texas Not Louisville Louis Kentucky and I was like Oh no she had a job with Delta as you were growing up. She was also a Buddhist and her mother. Your grandmother was rather religious but she was not a Buddhist. What was that like for you to be between those two sort of fierce points of view you know? Unfortunately I think this is true for a lot of people you know. Faith religion in in our families is such a source of division often comes on my earliest memories as a little kid. Probably a toddler actually are my my family arguing with my mom about faith. You know you're going to go to hell. By the time I was a little older early teens. The conversation at kind of I've become the silence where people weren't just weren't talking any more people weren't closed and no one would explain why it just was the way things were you know and I i. I remember at one point as a kid like my mom ended up in the hospital and it was like really serious and her family didn't immediately come to take care of her. You know. In retrospect now as an adult. Oh Oh my gosh that says a lot. You know so. By the time I was a teenager you know then it became well. We're not GONNA have this argument with Carol Anymore. She's adult. She seems really set in her ways but here saieed he's teenager. He's acting worldly he's starting to talk back he's effeminate and I think an interesting way. The worldliness the sarcasm. The you're just being too much of a teenager was a allowed them to not have to say head on. We think you're going to be gay and we want to stop that so instead it was kind of framed as like you're GonNa go to hell like your mom and was like what does that mean so yeah it was it. It was really awful and it led to a lot of hurt more silence because I think you know it just got so painful that I also distanced myself from from those family members and we have since made up and we have a better relationship but we will never be as close as we could have been had this this conflict not been a part of our lives you realize you were gay. Equality Young Age you've written about. How as a kid you realize that being black and get you killed and so it can being gay and combined being a gay? Black boy is a death. Wish So you felt you needed to hide. who were yeah you're right? I mean I'm from my earliest most big kind of blurry fantasies. It was is always boys and men you know. I didn't really fantasize about women's bodies. I thought it was rude. Actually I remember you know when I was hosting a entity in the morning. Show for buzzfeed which I did for a couple of years I got to interview. TYRA banks and I told her that I was like I remember when you were on the a sports illustrated cover because that was history making and my guy friends at school. We're learning Hon. I want and I remember and I checked myself but I remember thinking it would it be ruled to see any more of and that's when I was like oh I think so. I didn't have question about attraction it was always like how. How is this going to work like in terms of life you know will ever have love? Will I ever get married because at the time I mean this is you know two thousand two thousand four for example. That's when I'm in high school major quality certain wasn't even on the docket would ever be able to be a father. Would if I do have a family if I do you find this man. Will I be able to introduce him to my family. Will I be able to you know. Bring them home for Thanksgiving. I don't know and so it felt like America's already perilous terroists you have people like Matthew Shepard or chains where junior being killed just for who they are anyway but also even if I'm not killed and signing up for misery by being myself so like that just seems like it is an unfair choice. That's not a choice. I know that you are really impacted by the deaths of Matthew Shepard and James Virginia and I read that you stated that just as some cultures have one hundred words for snow. There should be one hundred words in our language for all the ways of black boy can lie awake at night. How did you cope? We would always in a state of fear. Not necessarily and I don't know if I would have said that if you ask me at the time are you scared. I would've been like what are you talking about. You know. It was a very creative kid. I was reading very very passionately particularly like when when I was in middle school. We didn't have the Internet. Dial up and then dial comes like right at the beginning of high school and of course it was so slow and you couldn't actually use your landline phone and and beyond so it was like it took a while before that was even a part so I was just reading a lot of books I started writing and I really rich creative creative life and I think though I didn't realize I was coping I think my writing and reading and what became my writing life as a kid manifested in this lake rich interior. Already I had my. I have such an overactive imagination. It's just why you know now. I'm married to Paul Newman's ghost You know I just had like elaborate fantasies fantasies and everything in the world to myself so I think that kept me from feeling dead inside and kept me from feeling that the way America Kerr was outlining the borders of my identity and like barbed wire at that like they were never going to get to who I really really am. What is your first memory of writing? I think the first thing I remember writing with the intention to share it to someone was in middle school. We watched the movie clue in school the original movie. And then I think short store remember Mrs Scarlet and I think it was like to learn earned vocabulary were so it was like Miss Scarlet sauntered across the room I remember loving Miss Scarlet and wanting I remember and I and I was drawing my mom. Tom was in fashion when I was growing before it was born and I loved that part of our history so I was always trying women addresses so I was like writing poems about my scarlet and drawing all these women in red addresses and so that's kind of where I started and then the screen movies happened and my mom let me watch them and so the work that that I didn't start at sharing with my classmates that I was like I've I've got a new story. They were all slasher short stories. I guess is what you'd call them. It was basically screen but it would I would set did at are school and I would or some horrible murderer would be brutally murdering me and all my friends and the more I liked you the more elaborate and awful your death was and and you know kids are so crazy and so we all loved it. We thought it was great. And it's like wow this is awesome and like Oh when you put the knife in my forehead and the blood that was so awesome thank you yes I eat and then the school shooting started happening because then it's like columbine there was a shooting Paducah Kentucky was all over the news as we're kind of seeing again now a new cycle where sure everyone was like well. It's the video games they're playing. It's the clothes they're wearing. Are you looking at your son's notebook. Does he have a notebook and so I stopped writing that and then I start right about Greek. Mythology was much. Say You wrote in the voices of Penelope Ritchie and Medusa let you choose those characters You know so. Many writers Danielson certainly have examined the relationship between gay men in Greek mythology. So there's a long tradition there and again i. I think it's a fantasy life. These these myths about beautiful people literally being swept off their feet off the earth. You know in the case of a lot of these missed by these gods and I think maybe in the way that when we think more conventionally about feminity and like the princess idea I think for you know gay boys it was like Oh maybe Apollo. So we'll show up one day but I didn't feel comfortable writing candidly about my attraction as a boy to other boys or men but I could write about penelope longing for years and years for deceased now if I were to you know look at some of those poems and they still have the notebook that I wrote in the most. You know. It's obvious I'm in writing. I can almost figure out who the crush is based on the imagery but it was a way of again creating this protected interior almost like garden of richness. You've written.

"Like the. The isn't even clue. They have a line leader where there's like there's nothing illegal about any of this than another characters. Like are you sure I guess this is America? It's like the, the loopholes that everyone's exploited now task maybe as much money. I didn't know that free. Yeah. Yes. Yes. Exactly. And, you know, blackmail and all these things that people are treating as new revelations of time are really such look, we, she's that. They were in fact in a clue the movie. So, you know, the answers were there. They were there, all along. I'm always saying it was in the public domain. I do love the line where we find out that professor Plum was once a shrink who treated patients suffering from delusions of grandeur, and he says, yeah, but now I work for the UN and Tim curry goes. Oh, so your work hasn't changed. Exactly. Exactly. And I love how they take a bunch of shots at the hypocrisy of the UN, which is so perfect. So let's go through the cast of characters and who's who because I that's what we've been obsessively doing all morning. There are the real turn of endings, which may complicate things. So I wanted to start with the first ending's you have to determine who's who based on the ending. Right. Because because that really defines the character, so the first ending and turn this off. Now, if you haven't seen close early matter, it's just if you haven't seen clear lost already. Everybody alerts for nineteen eighty nine hundred eighty five movies three endings. I think we're okay you guys. So the first ending it. Turns out Yvette the super sexy French made with her Bubis hanging out is a mass murderer that she's just going around killing everybody, and she's doing it with miss scarlet to create confusion in some cases to create confusion, so Sarah. Okay. Well, you vets, the Kremlin, maybe Maria boots. Yeah. Yeah, we went back and forth. I think she's the perfect package of the Kremlin, because you have the Honey trap element, which the Kremlin legs to use. Anna Chapman, that goes far back. And then you have the fact that she's posing as this French-made..

"Help us make sense of the world. We live in at ourselves in these times and give us him. Well needed break. All of us both show. Yes, indeed. And I would like to mention that I probably one of the reasons clue came up is because we use a clip from the movie clue in our opening sequence. Don't make about you. From miss scarlet, and I, I'm just very proud of that clip. Well that turned out to be what they call a coincidence. And yes, Malcolm Nance says there are no such things as coincidences, but I will say that there was this mean going around Twitter saying name five movies that are absolutely perfect. You wouldn't change a thing. And I did my five which included clue and then the Sarah chimed like she normally does with some bullshit. And. I replied saying, I'm always in the mood to watch clue and then a g came in next thing or this chatting it up, we're going to do a clue up. We all of clue. We're all like eighties children. Right. We all grew up watching clue, which is completely inappropriate for children. I'm now realizing that. Like Mr. Greene was gay like, who knew. Yeah. And the best part is, you've got Jane we'd land. You've got Jane Weeden, who stars as the singing telegram, and she's the Qatar for the go Go's and then you've got being who is the lead singer of the punk rock band fear. He plays Mr. body in this film. And so it's just kind of this cool crowd like music crossover from the eighties as well. Yeah. No. It's a masterpiece. And so, I mean, Tim curry, how many conic roles has he has he plays Wadsworth the Butler, he was in rocky horror picture show, the clown it, and he's had so many conic roles. And so he just such a great perfect wouldn't change a thing movie. Let's get to it. All right. So Sarah, and I watched the movie together, we took copious notes. We're seeing that you ladies being given how deeply research I've done the same. Yes, I do have pages of notes here, and the first note is I'm the Butler, sir. I bottle. Okay. So, yes. Exactly. So buttering is our new name for crimes for committing crimes like so Manta for, but Butler is a lot, right? He's buttering. He's butlering battled. Are there other connotations to mind?.

Bam more Ianovich because of his height gives you a little bit of a defensive matchup against your well where he can match up against some. Well, what are the Sixers doing sitting there with Mike miss scarlet? Amir Johnson wasn't Chandler filling in time to this is ridiculous. The absolute nightmare. You know, who I'd go get. He and his canter. Well, you know what there's a. Cantor has been you know, totally eliminated by Dale the head coach of the Knicks. He's rotting on the bench. And there was even a mean, did you see this Maija? Lena. It was a tweet yesterday where he's in front of the welcome to Pennsylvania, sign off the turnpike waving his hands up and down in his canter like saying, please send me the Sixers. We'll see the, you know, the guy, and I know it'll never happen Rick. What if we wanted him during the trip there was anywhere? We didn't get Kristaps Porzingis from the Knicks. I went out. Right. There's just a great disturbance in the force emperor. I'm sorry. Great disturbance. Yes. There was just a bad day. Just and what's the whole irony of this whole thing this bad day is the fact that I've made this happy list because I got down in the dumps about the world. You know, we've had some sad news really horrible news in the last week. And I tried to turn it around by keeping a list of things that are that's positive that make me happy big or small, and I called the happiness. So I added some things yesterday then then the Brady bunch kids house of cards just kind of fell down a little bit. But anyway, I'm going to pick it back up. I'm gonna rebuild that happy house of cards, which by the way, the new season drops tomorrow heartache either either tomorrow or next Friday either tomorrow or next Friday forgot so but I haven't I have a follow up on an AB fab that I wanna tell you about.
