It's been a huge week and we are thrilled to have a virtual audience joining us today for our conversation with rachel. Hollis rachel is a bestselling author podcast host and motivational speaker. You know her as the author of the hit book girl. Wash your face and her latest book. Didn't see that coming just came out last. Fall rachel you for joining us. Welcome to skip from the couch. Oh thank you guys so much for having me. We're gonna start with our first question. Let's have you skin your resume. What are the highlights. So my first job out of high school. I didn't go to college. My first job out of high school was actually miramax films. So back in the day when miramax was making good will hunting and emma and That was a bit of a trial by fire as you might suppose. I sort of hopped around production companies after that working as an assistant and then a coordinator and in the midst of that working in la and working in the entertainment industry was an incredible lesson on some levels and also pretty toxic environment on the other. And so i started to dream about what it would like to start my own company and be my own boss and after having a really crappy boss. I quit on a friday and started my company. Monday morning and back then. I was an event planner. So i had gotten my experience doing movie. Premieres press junkets. And i started to do those for brides and people having bought mitzvahs and someone's fiftieth birthday party. And i solely built that company up into what would become a high end luxury event business and it was really fun and it really fed my creative passion of designing spaces and the thrill of putting an event together and i started to get a bit restless and begin again to dream of something more. I started a blog back in two thousand eight which was sort of the heyday to have a blog and slowly than built that into a media company. So back then we wouldn't have used. We wouldn't have known things advertising or Putting things into your blog posts or talking about a certain product. But i started to kind of finagle my way and realized that there was a business there and that gave birth to the media. Company that i now owned today and i like to say you know my my job hasn't changed that much over the years. I have always just been trying to communicate with women in my community and my company and the things that i teach have evolved as i have evolved as a woman so i started writing a blog than i began writing books. Then i began writing about my life and all of that led to the things i've known for today which is speaking and writing and podcasts. Obviously as you just said so much of your life is out of the public on social media. What is something that we can't google about you that you haven't posted on instagram. That you see on my gosh so many things. Well okay. i'll tell you guys. I have not said this publicly but i'm really excited. I just finished my first screenplay. Congratulations thank you thank you. I literally cried when i wrote the last words. Because it's something. I dreamed about writing for a long time and as a writing is my creative outlet and started as an author in fiction and then somehow fell into nonfiction and kind of advice. And it's always been a dream to write a screenplay because i want to challenge myself a new medium so that was a big deal to finish. Who knows what will happen. And honestly i don't even care. I'm just proud of myself for finishing. Is it adapted from your books or is now really totally new idea. Yeah totally new idea. That's so exciting. Great way to start off the year. So i wanna We're going to go back into to how you grew. Up and tire stories started to evolve. We mentioned in our intro. The title of your book didn't see that coming. Your own story started with a tragedy that obviously you and your family did not see coming which was losing your brother to suicide and that loss is such an enormous part of your story in one start first of all despite using so sorry for your loss in also by asking if you could share with our audience just how that experience shaped you at such an earlier age and really shaped your resilience. Yes so When i was fourteen years old my older brother ryan committed suicide. He had struggled with mental illness for a kind of as long as i can remember was when i was little. I didn't really understand that. That's what was happening. But as i can look back as an adult. I understand it from totally different perspectives. I was fourteen. And i think that losing him in in that way would have been awful and traumatic no matter what but what sort of added so much more gravity to the situation was that i found him so i had not just the loss but also the ptsd of of that day in the morning and going through those things and wife shattering. I mean my family. My i think that my parents did the best that they could with the skills and the tools that they had but they didn't have a lot of skills and tools so it was already a hard childhood and this was sort of the thing that shattered Everything that was and trying to learn to deal with that. When i didn't have parents who knew how to help how to advise or to ask me questions or hey. This is who we should talk to. That just wasn't a resource that existed in my life so it was really hard to say the least

Attorneys in Weinstein case buy some extra time before trial
"Harvey Weinstein not that he was gay or anything like that. But he certainly was had his hand in the cookie jar a couple of times Harvey Weinstein, you saw some video of it. I saw this morning couple photos video of Harvey Weinstein. Not looking good which well, he never looked gonna say looks worse than ever looked if that's possible. I don't know who the comic was or who the person was describing Harvey Weinstein ones. But I think it was a she who said that Harvey Weinstein looked like a bunch of lint rolled up in chewing gum. It's a good example described does the sky them. Yeah. It's like the pilots character pig pen. Right. He's like the human version of pig. No matter how many showers, and he was always coming out of the shower too. When he was hitting on these women, and you what do you still look filthy? A heavy showers. He thinks he's still looks just to shoveled. And just. But anyway, he was at court in court, they Manhattan supreme court for a crucial hearing his upcoming criminal trial. And he had this is actually kind of smart. It's getting these two main attorneys are females. So he's himself. Okay. If I'm going to get someone to represent me against all these allegations, these women, I'm going to get women to talk to the people in the jury who may be women. Right. But then they brought along like to other attorneys to men Jose bias who represented Casey Anthony, and then Artha Dalla I'd Allah who is the one of the attorneys husband's. So he's got a female attorney Marianne, but tuna and she's married to Arthur a dollar. So there's like four of walked in with him. By the way, by defending Casey, Anthony, Aaron Hernandez, the former NFL player who the suicide. And so he's got some high profile people there and the bottom line with Harvey Weinstein is I think they may have a good shot getting him off. I think so too from some of the stuff that I read like the text messages from some of these ladies. Not just that. I mean, the only thing with these particular stories that you have to have to get him on. You would have to have video evidence of him forcing himself on a woman. Correct. Some sort of Email some sort of some sort of evidence admitting wrongdoing the bottom line with these sexual assault alleged sexual assaults is it was consensual. I was a powerful guy in Hollywood. Everybody knew that everybody knew I had the Cassie couch. Everybody knew to get a job in Harvey Weinstein film. You have to to get a job you'd have to give a job. Everybody knew that. And and and the attorneys will get up there in front of a jury, and they'll say, my client, I wouldn't trust my client with my wife or girlfriend anybody he's a scumbag this guy look at them, but he's not a sexual criminal. He's he didn't commit sexual assault. Because all these women knew why there were going in there. And it was a transaction. It was an to adults, and and they may even come up with people who've actually have gotten jobs because of him. I believe there's some pretty big names who've gotten gigs. You know, these actresses that come out of the woodwork? Nobody knows who they are. And all of a sudden, they're in a major motion picture, they went to the Harvey Weinstein school of casting couch. That's what happened there yet. Whenever you see those movies like who's Renee Zellweger Miramax. You'll all right. I got it. I got it. What's her body of work before Jerry Maguire, nothing the film her body body? That's the body of work. I'm just I'm not saying specifically heard allegedly. Allegedly over this whole conversation. So that's the only thing that you have to prove that these women knew what they were doing. They went up to a hotel room. They weren't forced. It's not like the only the only the only entity that would have a real good case against Harvey Weinstein where could stick would be that potted plant. He pledged himself in if the potted plant could speak clearly the evidence there, you know, what I mean, that's the only get him on. But these women the rest of them. I don't know. I like I said they're gonna make them out to be a bad guy, but not a sexual
Let's Get Real About Netflix's Cash and Spending Numbers
"So how do you go about running an Oscar campaign? Well, Netflix has done something very sensible. They have purchased the the abilities of miss Lisa toback. Now, she worked for Harvey Weinstein Miramax and some others. She's been going since the nineties who is a skill. Strategist. Now, she's not alone. There are other people that do the same job. But she is one of the best insofar as that she knows how to play a marketing campaign to the right people to the people who vote it'd be who are taste makers who the people who can influence and change minds so Roma's campaign specifically, I mean, I care let's tales of kind of huge parties. Roma seemed chocolates put yourself in Roma kind of blue screen who would Ince's your wouldn't want to be in Rome. I wouldn't want it to be. But I mean, there are a lot of there are a lot of. There's a lot of glitz surrounded a huge. It's massive now. Number one. It's it's a it's an art house film is made by a popular director who has was one before it's black and white. And we keep thinking what would Rome it'd be like if it was color. Maybe we wouldn't be talking about it. But it costs fifteen million to make 'em. Netflix has spent probably twice that. I'm promotion now that is unusual insofar as most production budgets will just be doubled. For example, for something cost ten they usually spend ten to market it. But they've doubled the production value to push the Sout, which I think's very important now, what would make somebody vote for film as opposed to not voting for a film being mollycoddle. I don't know about you. But role much hawk it wouldn't make me vote for it. A big party would make me vote for but thinking that other people like this, film may change my mind. I mean, this is is the height to believe is a good film. It's a good film. Yeah. It's it's not it's peculiar of having. Arguments with a about it with people, technically, it's it's lovely. And don't forget that that choir on had his his Oscar winning a Chievo is cinematographer helping him on this. Although Chievo was busy with something else. So it looks amazing and it plays into a lot of his Geist of of Latina's of native people of the the sort of underclass, I suppose, but also love and family. Let's take a little bit of a closer look at toback and others Liker. I mean, she is very much behind this particular campaign. And yet, of course, she is associated with with Miramax and Harvey Weinstein that doesn't appear to have damaged her. I think because she left she left she left. She left Harvey before everything got really, really bad. I think there were probably some notes going on. But she is such a highly price specialist and also I was looking at her her social media. She doesn't she's not one of these people that screams in your ear or yells in your face. She's a very very gentle very subtle behind the scenes, almost I dare I say old fashioned Hollywood publicists, she is subtle. She knows how to work the ropes, but the important thing here is a net. Flicks knows this that if they win best picture it's a game changer. It changes Hollywood forever. Well, let's talk about the. Because the way that net. Flicks films are distributed different. They have a shooter window than traditional movie companies. So as you say this model is successful. It does change the way businesses run. Just explain to us how that distribution model works. Well, it's generally a studio will make a film, and because of of of laws that are fifty or sixty years old it cannot own its own a theatrical distribution, meaning it can't own cinemas. So it will put it out into cinemas. And then later it will go onto streaming or DVD's now net.
