Trucks running into invisible walls before running into a child on the roadway or pedestrian seeming to disappear and re materialize on the other side of the street as a runaway car slams into the post on the corner where the person originally been standing. We're talking about miraculous survivals on sunday. August eighth twenty twenty one in rural pennsylvania. A young woman who has asked to remain anonymous was driving her father home from dinner when she lost control of the car. Coming around a curve hitting a patch of loose gravel at high speed. The car spun around slamming into the side of a small block. Raj with enough force to all the demolish the building. The airbags deployed and the car was on fire while her father was pinned inside the crashed vehicle. The daughter who'd been behind the wheel suddenly sat found herself outside the car standing in front of the house next to the garage. She had no recollection of getting out of the car. Or of the crash itself photo show. It was impossible for her to exit the car without injury. Although she was taken to the hospital for observation she was unscathed. Her father was helped from vehicle by fire and rescue and suffered only a broken rib. Did the young woman teleport out of the car. Was it the work of a guardian angel or the almighty the summer of nineteen seventy-six. A farmer in kansas had taken his children in their friend. The river to swim. However reason rains had raised the water levels in the river and the farmer decided it was not save. His children's friends dated she'd been to the river many times when the river was this high and was an accomplished swimmer and without heating. The farmers advice jumped into the swollen river. It was an act she would regret as she was swept up in the current and was being carried downstream. The girl panicked and tried to fight against the water. The farmer fearing for the girl safety jumped into saver. Unfortunately the ungainly teenager clutched at and pushed against the farmer nearly holding him underwater. He tried to find something to stop their momentum as he felt himself sinking in the fast moving water the farmer looked up and saw bright beam of light. As if someone were shining a spotlight into the river he reached for the light and his hand was met by a sturdy tree ranch but he was able to grab used to pull himself and the teenager to safety. What was the bright light that the farmer saw again. Was this the work of guardian angel. Whatever you believe their innumerable stories about miraculous survivals around the world and with the advent of camera phones and cici tv systems. There's even visual evidence. But what sets these survivors apart from those who were not so lucky in lawrence. Gonzalez's two thousand eight book deep survival. He found that survivors of situations which should have proved fatal. All share some common traits. They tend to be humble intuitive individuals with strong family connections. Many of the people who miraculously survived ordeal are not the strongest or the fastest the loudest or even the most boastful in fact in his research. Gonzales found that the rambo types with years of survival training were usually the first to die in extreme survival situations. Thank you for listening. This has been your weekly truth. "For your term For the two thousand eighteen election. And i had said no earlier but You know after the clinton debacle People came around again and my partners said you can do it. And i did it and i was the only challenger to l. Until that fateful night. October when the us got knocked out by trinidad tobago in fact Out of three. Three of the four voting constituencies by our our measures. You know my campaign teams measures. We were winning and on our way to winning that election but after the us got knocked out you know as you know Seven other candidates got The temerity to run and they all saw that senio was in fact vulnerable And after that it became into it became a almost circus the last four months of the election. Oh yeah it was crazy with eight different candidates but but from that you know My involvement has become even greater So in the sport. So i think it's been good achieve what i wanted which was changed And you know at the time. It didn't have to be that ultimately wanted. I wanted to always try to affect positive change in the sport and my involvement since the two thousand eighteen election is all only increased and hopefully positively. So here's the last question. And i think you're probably uniquely qualified to opine on this so given what we've as we're record this this week with the quick demise of the Very short lived Superleague and and what's happened sort of with money and the sport i mean money and sports generally right but money in particular the sport and mls. Frankly right it's very interesting to sort of hear. All of these issues sort of coming to to to the forefront like all at one sort of explosive time. Because you know for every person that says hey twenty-five years. Mls lots of investment long-term investors soccer specific stadiums. there's equal if not sometimes more vociferous number of people on the other side going whereas promotion. Relegation i it's it's it's watered down. It's never gonna be competitive. It's too you know it's too corporately. Central i just i guess the question there is what do you think the future of the pro game specifically is here in this country and then is it even juxtaposed able to what's or is it part of the dynamic. That probably doesn't go away over time. As we see in the super league this money and set and corporatization frankly of of the sport that you and i both sort of grew up loving perhaps in a pure form maybe in a naive youthful way. Or maybe maybe actually. What are your thoughts about the future of the pro game here in this country relative to all of that boy. It's last question. So i want to be concise but if you're asking me to address pro royale which became a big issue on the campaign and that's a whole other show. Yeah i i. Don't i don't show but it's an element that it's not a sideshow. I think it's an element of the bigger issue is. We don't have to get too specific. I mean i. I i think pro rail is Say quickly absolutely. Correct that Players who after play to stay up are hungrier That said as we all know clubs precisely because the revolt of the fans this week at the speaks that clubs are ingrained. They came out of the communities. One hundred twenty years ago they they every community has a club. And and so the club gets relegated. Charlton gets relegated at you know At the valley. You don't get twenty seven thousand fans anymore..

"Large of boston law firms. And just thought. I was going to be an associate and i would have no other soccer contact anymore prof- professional experience with that But lo and behold at the end of my first year Senior partner in the firm came to me and said hey we know your background you know. One of our client are two of our clients because they owned it together One was bob kraft was a guy named steve. Carper owned foxboro stadium together. Then foxboro stadium. You know they want the world cup. In particular. bob kraft and boston's bid. Effort is twenty nine. Th and last the quality of its bid. Effort is twenty nine th and last of all the cities bidding four. What was then thought to be twelve bid sites. And you know they're close to pulling the plug. Really it was. Bob kraft more. Who's interested you know Do you think you can turn it around and you know i'm like i hope so. And later afternoon i was in. Bob kraft office And so this is. I guess. Nineteen ninety And the firm turned me loose for the next three years. Like fifty percent of my time was working on turning around the boston world cup bid effort so here i was back in soccer And you know work with a lot of people and we worked all together and You know the city was never ranked last By the quality of the bit effort was and ultimately twenty nine cities bid for what we're not twelve world cup sites but nine ultimately and i'm pleased to say nineteen ninety-three. Obviously we were. We had turned it around enough so that we were chosen as a world cup site And so from there. It just continued You know I don't want to overstate it. But you know. Bob kraft You know when he was considering an mls investment you ask me my opinion The first gm of the revolution Was brian donovan. Who is mild client. He's a senior executive at foxboro stadium. So advise them in their first year. Not about player and not on the field but about you know kind of helped him with the ball. The blast model of front office Which i think was unique and in terms of fan and corporate sponsorships and and all that as you probably know they would have even though they had one of the worst teams on the field there. for the first three years they're the number two team attendance y In the league which by the way proves again boston's a great soccer town because even though the team wasn't doing well they had huge crowds at at foxboro stadium so i did a little with the reds and then advisors asked me if i If the friend advisors were not lawyers asked me if i.

"Now where is it. I'm sorry it said they also played one season of indoor soccer using the providence civic center for home games But that it also says right. At the start of the eighty eighty one indoor season they relocated to jacksonville. So that absolutely does confirmed what you're saying. Which is they relocated midseason. I can guarantee you played at least one game there where an and it was announced and I was inconsolable. 'cause i certainly didn't know that it was in the works that they're all right so aside from that abandonment then And obviously you went to to to baltimore for a while. That was great so But maybe just sort of wrap this up and it's it's hardly fair here but it's clear that the sport of soccer really kinda never left you. Despite your you know the ending of your playing days and stuff you continued to sort of have a bond with this sport literally all the way up to a few years ago running for presidency of us soccer right so you you give our audience a bit of a sense of of what you sort of evolved to professionally in your life and and how soccer has stayed kind of on your radar or are part of your life since Because i could imagine that. This kind of abandonment might swear you offer game at this point right being so emotionally tender at that age and being abruptly Quickly here about why. Why state in the game to place. Now okay okay. Sure so now. Realize i mean this. Is you know my my dad. Who's looking down these days And i have to tell you that that problem yesterday. 'cause my two boys that are college soccer players now together they'd never played together in their lives at any level Younger son who's coming back from a devastating knee. Injury played his first college game yesterday and assisted on one of my older son's goal so You know and what. I posted about it because we had that. Was you know it's all started. You know all started by my dad. Came from germany weren't against who Started at all So even is heartbroken You know the bond My love for the sport and the bond when my dad was of course not abrogated in any way so i became even more militant more devoted to the sport and more militant about the nfl running. They're they're being you know. Having more of a centralized focus on teams that are going bad in markets that are good market so i felt more even more that i fixed it I had transferred from cornell brandeis precisely team that left so i had more of a thought that it had to work. I unexpectedly had to redshirt. You know after. I transferred and broke my leg playing semi pro and then had a series of injuries. That made my college career virtually nil. So i you know. I secretly You know held a desire to to to prosecute my playing career and make it back from these injuries. I very overtly said it's not the sport It's not the city You know clubs just to be run correctly and so what happened. Is you know i i knew. I was openly or thought. It was openly headed to law school but After i graduated I i.

"We're kinda barred from using the whole stadium They found another venue for nineteen seventy nine and lo and behold it was boston university's nickerson field and that actually so there. You go there in desirable. You know boston metropolitan area on a boston area on the on the green line of the tea. That goes right by you And yet go into that stadium. Hurt tremendously And the team lost a lot of that momentum. Seventy seventy nine was a reversal A fortune for the team by the way part of it having to do with that part of it having to do with lose not getting back a lot of their star players from seventy eight but also part of it having to do with in my opinion one of the seminal developments in the league that ultimately killed the nfl And that is. Ill advised calling of a player. Strike at the beginning of the nineteen seventy nine season from which momentum was lost So yeah seventy nine wasn't a great year for The team and in boston. Boston area or you know largely for the nsl as compared to seventy eight. What was the. Do you remember the situation with flanagan. And this is a guy who you know lit up the league and was like you know year on his way arguably for even a something even greater in seventy nine but was it was. It charlton athletic. That was not letting him come back. And i know a lot of the players that were coming from. England were doing the three months in the nsl thing. I'm just wondering perhaps if that was the issue or the team men couldn't pay or whatever. I'm just curious. If you know why. I actually i actually. I actually don't remember per se with. He wanted more money or or the team or teams asking more for the loan. I believe that happened more. Dramatically even in detroit with the express with with trevor francis shows he was dead and even a bigger player And i believe that had to do with with economics But i can't tell you I i remember Okay i just google that. I'm being honest i can't i couldn't remember. That says flanagan got into a contract dispute back home with charlton an ultimate team in themselves so And i guess it looks like they prematurely announced his return but my aging brain doesn't literally remember what happened that that was a major disappointment. What's going to be action. Yeah but i think moving stadium knocking not getting people back Ironically lowering the capacity and And the nfl strike all conspired and the team not doing well on the field all conspired to To to to hurt yeah. I think a lot of people just just just plain out forget that the nsl especially in its sort of explosive Late seventies years so dependent on Before even called premier league but sort of this influx of of english talent. That would literally be you know only for about three months of the. Nfl season itself was relatively truncated. I mean maybe april two to august and soccer balls were happening in basically in august late august. I think largely because it was just the more convenient thing and then sort of elongated over time. Give me a sense of lipton. You kind of hinted at.

"Were willing to go if they were interested. You know a fox. Whereas i think twenty two miles from you know where where i live in newton and and and not You know not a bar In theory if you drew from providence and in theory you would because it's a good soccer to in an ethnic community community and say in theory again because sometimes if the quality soccer is not good enough Ethnic soccer aficionados will affirmatively reject going to these games and they'd rather watch you know piped-in games from their home countries on circuit. And you know they're their clubhouses. You know the of their social clubs but in theory. Providence is attractive in theory. You know it's it's closer to new bedford and fall river where there's a big portuguese community and that becomes relevant in nineteen eighty at a big mistake that the team in the made when they were back At foxboro shot stadium. But i don't want to jump ahead. So i don't think if we're talking about nineteen seventy eight i I don't think it was a bar interesting. Well described for me. Sort of what sort of happens after seventy eight because it was a magical start for sure. But mike flanagan doesn't come back and that's just the least of the worries or certainly one of them right right. Yeah mike mike mike or flanagan as he was called you know. He came from charlton at a time. Trautmann's in the second division but he led the league in scoring like you said and was mvp and became a local folk hero here and he didn't come back but really you've got it right again. that was the least of the problems. The big problem was And while i'm attorney i'm not a real estate attorney and but what i can tell you. Is that part of schaefer stadium. Foxboro stadium was was Built evidently on a tiny part on land owned by a harness race ports track and A person bought that that a horse race track Got him any. Handelman was a big Like you know. He's he's a businessman but he was a big Sports and actually a kind of ahead of time sports talk show host here in boston and show called the sports huddle but he was he was. He was a pretty hard driving businessman and He basically he told lipton tea That he wouldn't let the team play in in Schaefer stadium in nineteen seventy nine unless they paid him right. Presumably for what's called an easement a right to use Another's property access through that property and lipton tea. Felt that The price he was asking was exorbitant And and blackmail ish and they said no and so because They buy that dispute..

"Trouble in his personal life and ultimately And i'll never forget this. I was at a game and and you know this guy started to sell off all the players. 'cause they still had a you know a very good roster you say the was there and seventy five antonio samoa's shep messing and i and i you know i went to a game loyally in seventy six in in quincy mass at this. You know it was. It was a good five to ten thousand stadium but yet a high school stadium and lo and behold. Who's sitting next to me. Who sits down next to me. Shut messing because he's sitting out the game and he's gonna be sold to the cosmo's next day so i sat with shopping his wife. So that was. That was kinda interesting when i was fifteen and You know he got into major problems and you know Criminally and at the end of seventy six. You know the the the he sold off these guys and the minuteman They folded Huby went on to. I think team hawaii All the top players were gone. And i was broken hearted and so i actually wrote eight fifteen to fill wisdom the commissioner and said look what this just happened boston. Or it's happening maybe i did. I was still going on. It has nothing to do with boston. As a shocker town it has to do with the mismanagement. Let me tell you what happened. and and You know this. This is a great soccer city and you ought not to let this happen without league intervention. And so he sent one of his top guys into meet with me. And you know from that you know. It didn't save the men. But from that moment i was Again committed to making the sport work in the country and in i city so that was the minute informed. You know informed my relationship and ultimately i transferred colleges to to to be with with the team and so that's that's the minimum interesting so i so t two things on pack that number one..

"The boston minutemen played at Let's see it was probably five or six different t- Different teams different stadiums in the boston and largely Wider new england area Alumni stadium At boston college Nickerson field at boston university. Foxboro stadium veterans stadium in quincy etc etc era. The team had their own sort of issues Playing at least in the beginning at schaefer stadium You know which was brand new or relatively new Back then in foxborough massachusetts essentially losing the opportunity to play and having to go back to nickerson field again and then going back to schaefer stadium Once again so it was it was it's indicative of not only sort of the the team ends sorta travails but also a pro soccer's sort of waywardness. I guess in the boston and new england metropolitan area. Frankly an issue that still lasts and is pretty raw today to a new england. Revolution fans of of major league soccer This sort of Continued quest to finally hopefully someday maybe find more boston. Centric or or within the city limits of boston Soccer specific stadium. As long as i guess the kraft family owns the the revolution. I think it's going to be very hard to sort of a separate them from Gillette stadium where it's very cost efficient to To house that team in the home of the new england patriots for sure but it does speak to the regionality of soccer in the pro ranks in the boston metropolitan area and the Frankly the just the difficulty of trying to find and create a soccer specific venue for a team in the new england region in new england team and our excuse to kind of get into that and a whole bunch of stuff We make lots of different stops. Yes with the minute men The cosmos certainly make an appearance. We talk about their move And the debatable. Dates of when that occurred from new england to jacksonville where they became the jacksonville tea. Men right up there in the what are you talking about with things like the utah jazz and going from new orleans Keeping the name but all that stuff and we also sort of Get into a little bit of his is a team in one word or t men. Two words hint it's it's absolutely the latter as As our our sleuthing has discovered all that and much much more Steve gant's our guest. "Was You know a company that was interested in this pixie. Dust known as the north american soccer league Warner communications. Certainly with the new york cosmos gulf and western with the washington diplomats or other other companies. That kind of just sort of Jumped onto the old proverbial bandwagon. But you know you know You who knows what the The marketing geniuses in the minds at The hallways corporate headquarters of lipton tea. Were thinking when they thought. Hey let's you know. Let's by north american soccer league franchise and and we'll make millions I'm not quite sure wound up that way but one in one effort of corporate synergy. You heard that little clip there. That was an ad from nineteen. Seventy nine we think and that was a majority voice over by kevin cat keelan. Yes the the the Standout goalie for the new england team and And his mates enjoying a nice big pitcher right after a game. of lipton is t of course why not Let's make that corporate synergy work. And i will tell you that. This is a team that Probably punched above its weight in terms of memories. Its logo hey it's jerseys If you may remember at least for the first couple of seasons they literally had a t the shape of a letter t On their jerseys sort of yellow add up Red slash burnt orange gorgeous Sort of looking logo that incorporate all those colors light blue and white as well. Sort of the big schooner ship and of course the boston tea party. That's sort of the the background of sort of why the name the but but they stood out and they really hit the asl and nineteen eight was six expansion franchises that year To bring it up to twenty four teams back then and as we get into our conversation with steve i really good sense of perhaps just a few too many teams at that But boy do. They make a splash their first season. They beat the cosmo's twice. You had mike flanagan. Lighten it up. And i believe was the most valuable player of the nfl that year. Mike flanagan was he only lasted one season with With the team he wound up going back to england he had led charlton athletic As as a player he was basically with the team in On loan for nineteen seventy then went back to play for crystal palace and queens park rangers back the charleston a few other things and also some management teams that have relatively a recently to But cat keelan was part of this team for sure. Let's see we had. Ringo can t o somebody we've talked about Who played with The since comments prior the asl was he he was a major presence in the american soccer league. But ringo can t o had a spell with the team in a lorry. A whole bunch of great place brian. Alderson who you new jersey rockets fans okay. We'll they're they're of them but he was a player for that team. Later on he was part of the mix and on and on and on some great names and faces that dominated This team for three years and peripatetic frankly within the new england region we get into that with steve. This is a team that came after a similarly wayward team known as the boston minutemen. That was actually a promise. More the Early adjunct for steve into his What effectively became his Pro soccer experiences..

And maybe even in the realm of defunct sports altogether in the united states. And i will fight you on. Perhaps it being one of the best ever logos to ever grace uniforms in the year. The united states and north america. And if you are a soccer fan of Of any significant issue will certainly remember perhaps quite fondly This team known as the new england. Tea men obviously playing in the The northeastern region of the united states boston a little bit but Regionally in foxborough and we get into this the interesting story of this team of the north american soccer league three years. It ran until it moved to jacksonville in one thousand. Nine hundred eighty an interesting circumstances. And we're not quite sure exactly did they. Start in Jacksonville playing indoors before they played actually their first outdoor season and match. We're not quite sure but our guest this week. Steve gant's helps us try to get to the bottom of all of it. Steve gant's a name. You may know if you're a soccer fan or practitioner. A name you may be familiar with twenty eighteen. Steve was one of the handful of candidates running for the presidency of soccer. The united states soccer federation was Previously known as pretty much more commonly known as us soccer and Very tense and intriguing presidential campaign that was for the future of the sport In the united states and arguably very much still an open ended debate and conversation Steve is known More for His work as as a corporate lawyer well regarded and a highly sought after in various aspects of of soccer law contracts player types of stuff and As we get into our conversation in a few moments a player Back in the day in the collegiate ranks in a little bit. Is i sort of professional taste of this game. Known as pro soccer in the united states was as a as a high school kid Working in the public relations department of the marketing team for this team known as the new england team it. Why were they call the team and we'll get into but if you didn't remember the They were owned by the lipton tea company. "Percent, but the community average. was just six percent. Six percent of our members. Sorry. Rephrase that one evolve our members? WHO answered this poll? Trust about six percent of their neighbors to help them out in a pinch to guard the community if the rights were outside the door. And nearly every answer that was higher than one percent had to do neighbors that were former military law, enforcement or something like that. This! This is the problem. A modern minute, man is no good by himself by himself. He's seen as a cook a mayor dwell. In even a handful are seeing this violent ruffians up to no good, but if you have a community of them. Stores to change. For, better or worse, people are easily swayed to go along with what they see going on around them. Now I know you've seen lately in the news with these riots and protests going on, and it seems people who otherwise normal to us are suddenly doing and saying that you never would have imagined before, and the reason is because they see others around them doing the same thing if they want to fit in. This also applies the positive qualities though. We need to set a better example. Start off by setting it for yourself, then your family and your neighbors. Encourage them to do the same. This is not going to be easy. And I know I know everyone of US worried about I remember the protests in January in Capital Virginia was twenty fifty thousand armed protesters there who left that place spotless when they were done and nothing happened. No windows are broken. Buddy. He was arrested. Nobody was hurt. It was a truly peaceful protests. It was a textbook definition of a peaceful protests and yet. Everyone, there was called an extremist. Media could not say the word extremist or racist, enough and reference to a very diverse crowd who was there in support of the rights, and yet what you and I see today is peaceful, protests or anything but. And they're praised for it. This is not going to be easy. Kennedy was not wrong about needing nation of minute men. When liberty minded grow too complacent. The agents of tyranny will take root and make no mistake. This is not some new phenomenon that the tactics were seeing employed across social media, and the streets are no different than what we saw on the Russian revolution, the Salem witch trials or any other event where someone with an agenda convinced the mob. The something was in their best interest. Commitment to freedom. is about more than buying guns. It's about civic engagement. It's about being part of the process. And all of us me included. Need to put the needs of the nation before own personal goals whatever that means to you. I believe in a modern minute. Man I believe in the ideal of a citizen. who whether he's military, law, enforcement or not? Is Ready to pick up and defend his community his nation when it needs it. And I believe.
