"Trump. The first one is a stunner. Attorney General Merrick Garland is now appointed a special counsel to investigate President Biden's son Hunter. He's a familiar figure to the case. Delaware US Attorney David Weiss has been investigating Hunter Biden's Financial and business dealings. Mr Weiss advised me that in his judgment his investigation had death. reached He's also a former president of the United States. Garland has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a special counsel. Garland pointed out the extraordinary circumstances of the Hunter Biden case and the appointment of Weiss reinforces a commitment to independence and accountability in sensitive matters. Today's announcement affords the prosecutors, agents and analysts working on this matter the ability to proceed with their work expeditiously and to make indisputably decisions guided only by the facts and the law. In court in Delaware David Weiss told a judge plea deal talks in Hunter Biden's weapon and tax evasion case were at an advance. Ed Donahue Washington. Meantime House Republicans say the appointment of a special counsel in the Hunter Biden case will not affect their ongoing congressional investigations. WTOP's Mitchell Miller today on the hill. A spokesman for Jim Jordan the Republican chair of the House Judiciary Committee has responded with a statement that David Weiss can't be trusted and House Oversight Committee chair James Comer has said he's ready to subpoena Biden family members. This is always going to end with the buy -ins coming in front of the committee. Comer speaking on Fox this week the White House meanwhile continues to insist there is no direct evidence that Joe Biden received any money through his son. The matter isn't expected to go away in the coming months as conservative Republicans push for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to allow them to ahead go with an impeachment inquiry involving the president. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller, Our other major story is the latest to come out of today's hearing in DC federal court in former President Trump's election interference case. Prosecutors wanted a protective order to prevent the former president from publicly sensitive evidence in the case. And while the federal judge Tanya Chutkin agreed that there are limits of what Mr. Trump can say, she didn't give the prosecution everything it asked for, saying, quote, I will take whatever measures are necessary to safeguard the integrity of the case. Judge Tanya Chutkin agreed with the defense on a looser version of a protective order for evidence in the case. But she largely sided with the the prosecution on what sensitive material should be protected as she vowed to keep politics case. Chutkin repeatedly said that Trump was subject to the court's rules as a defendant before trial, even though he's also running for president. She warned that she would not let political considerations affect her ruling, saying, quote, Your client's defense is supposed to happen in this courtroom, not on the Internet. I'm Shelley Adler. And now to the war in Ukraine. In a sweeping move, Ukraine's president has dismissed the heads of all of the military recruitment centers across the country. Corruption is at the heart of the matter. WTLP national security correspondent J .J. Green joins us live with more details. J .J. He said there are already 112 criminal proceedings underway, and he said these recruiters will be replaced by people who know quote, Why cynicism and bribery in times of war constitute treason. Some officials have been accused of taking cash, others cryptocurrency and others other forms of payment, all of it illegal enrichment. "Story from the White House the u .s. say there is a long way to go for an between accord Saudi Arabia and Israel the proposed agreement would involve Saudi Saudi recognition of the Israeli state in return for US security guards a US spokesperson played a talk of a breakthrough in those negotiations after the Wall Street Journal reported the broad details of the deal had actually been reached and finally just a few things for watching out for today at 8 a .m. UK time we get inflation figures out of Denmark and Norway for July later today the ECB will publish its economic bulletin at 1 30 p .m. UK time we get US inflation data now that will probably reinforce the argument for a September Fed pause and we also get Alibaba earnings so a things few happening throughout the day Stephen Leangarans thank you very much for that now Western arms played a big role in Ukraine's resistance to invasion by Russia but so too has a lesser known pipeline of Ukrainian innovations that the government is now trying to organize and channel towards the Army's procurement desk the mark champion and Alessia Safranova took a look at some of the hundreds of projects involved Mark joins us now with the details Margaret to have you with us tell us a little bit about the kinds being made in Ukraine yes I mean there's actually an enormous range I mean we've all heard about the sort of explosion in development of drones so the aerial drones that have played such a big role in surveillance and targeting on both sides really but primarily and most interestingly on the on the Ukrainian side where they've just there's just been a sort of a boom in small drone producers and then you know of the if government some sponsored some aren't you've seen this the naval drones that the government has sponsored but then you know outside of that you have a whole range of different projects that are you know much less glamorous if you like but quite important so I spoke to a company that is very basic but handsets communications radio sets for soldiers they're very basic but they have jamming anti -jamming properties the that first a few hundred that have been out on in tests for with soldiers they've had a pretty good feedback they're better than the motorolas that they've been working with and these answers only cost $100 so they're looking to start ramping up production to around two or three thousand a month and if the defense ministry takes on them they'll be up to around ten thousand a month another one was a company called Skylab which was developing drones aerial drones and it's now getting into robotic drones on the ground they're like kind of go -karts really but the idea was the soldiers said they needed something to get you know ammunition and supplies right up to the very front troops who are exposed and it's quite a dangerous task to get stuff forward oftentimes you can't use you know APCs or armored vehicles because they're too easily targeted so soldiers have to take that stuff up and now they're producing these robots to it do also little robot versions to do surveillance and bombing range of things yeah I mean that is a that is a staggering sort of range of different you military know initiatives but look doesn't Russia have at least as strong a science base and capabilities as as Ukraine is it happening on the other side if not why not yeah it's a really good question and absolutely Russia does these are both post Soviet states which have strong you know basis in science you know education math education and Russia is producing stuff but it's very state oriented and what you know what's happening in Ukraine you've got hundreds and hundreds of projects most of the people I spoke to they're quite young they just decided when the war started I need to do something they were in already in civilian drones or IT or whatever and they just started making things and that part is not happening in Russia so there is innovation happening it tends to be you know within the traditional arms industry which is much larger in Russia also isn't being constantly targeted to the same extent as the Ukrainian industry is but they don't have this kind you know sort of popular science explosion going on Mark are any of these Ukrainian innovations already in use at the front yes so those handsets are there's about 600 of them at the front now as I mentioned you know a lot of is this about drones so the government set up an organization in April to try and sort of organize and channel this stuff and fast -track it to the defense ministry so in those you know four months they've approved 400 projects for this initiative and the ministry defense is vetted but almost 200 of them and you know in within that you've got you know 70 UAV projects and 25 AI, 16 robotics you and know a number of those are already kind of moving to the front including the drones that for example Skylab was making. Do you think though Mark that these things are going to be decisive for this conflict? You know no piece of kit will decide it you know even when you speak to any military analyst, any defense official who is you know involved in the conflict in any way supplying arms to Ukraine, they will tell you you know even F -16s you know huge pieces of very very powerful equipment would not decide it. So no one piece of equipment will but there's no question that the the drones that have been developed to this highly sophisticated now that those have made an enormous difference and have given Ukraine the ability to sort of level the playing field because that technology, their intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance is better than the Russians. They're better at targeting, using those drones to bring the precision equipment that they have like high Mars to actually hit in stuff real time. It's not like the Russians don't have a fairly precise equipment similar to high Mars. They do, but their iron star just isn't good enough. "The morning continues. I'm John Trout. An international group of agencies led by the United States Coast Guard is investigating what made the Titan submersible carrying five people to the Titanic implode, killing all aboard. Correspondent Julie Walker is following the story. The MBI is currently in its initial evidence collection phase, including the brief salvage operations at the incident site and evidence collection in coordination with Canadian authorities in the Port of St. John's, Newfoundland. After the on scene evidence collection efforts conclude, the MBI will typically hold a formal hearing to gather additional witness testimony and evidence in a setting that is available to the public. Salvage operations from the ocean floor roughly 1600 feet from the Titanic are underway to determine the cause. The board will first and primarily work to determine the cause of this marine casualty and the five associated deaths. The MBI however is also responsible for accountability aspects of the incident and it can make recommendations proper to authorities the to pursue civil or criminal sanctions as necessary. As a senior investigator, I have witnessed the personal impacts associated with these types of events and my primary goal is to prevent a occurrence similar by making the necessary recommendations to enhance the safety of the maritime domain worldwide. He says there will be a formal hearing with witnesses. The Coast Guard led the initial search Admiral John Mauger. As a matter of US law and Coast policy, Guard the Coast Guard doesn't charge for search and rescue nor do we associate a cost with human life. We always answer the call. The international effort likely cost millions of dollars according to experts. I'm Julie Walker. 21 til now for the latest on the situation between the Kremlin and Ukraine. President Biden has offered first his remarks about what's being called a short -lived insurrection in Russia. Washington Coger -Magani reports. It's just too soon to know what impacts this is going to have on and Ukraine on Russia, quite frankly throughout Europe. It's just too soon to know. The president says the U .S. and NATO allies have made clear they were not involved. We had nothing with to do it. But they are assessing the fallout from the biggest challenge to Vladimir Putin's rule in decades. It's still too early to reach a definitive conclusion about where this is going. The president says Whatever the outcome, one thing will not change. The only outcome of all this remains to be seen. But no matter what comes next, I will keep making sure that our allies and our partners are closely aligned in how we are reading and responding to the situation. It's important we stay completely coordinated. And that they maintain support for Ukraine. Sagar Meghani, A Washington. British -based analyst understands the weekend's mercenary revolt in Russia to be about senior defense figures jostling for control. Correspondent Charles de Ledesma has that part of the story. The vulnerability has been demonstrated but at the same time I think everyone in Russia looked over the abyss and saw that whoever toppled him couldn't guarantee their own safety. And so in a system where he is the arbiter between some fairly vicious competing factions, this actually may strengthen his security in some ways because he's seen as the indispensable guarantor of the safety of whoever might want to replace him. Jack Watlin from the Royal United Services Institute says when Wagner Group chief Evgeny Kraigoshen took over the southern military district command post for Ukraine, he didn't stop it by operating and sat down with the deputy head of the general staff of the armed forces who had been running Wagner Group operations for a long time. It's obvious that there were negotiations going on in the background the whole way through and this was essentially a ploy to try and shift the balance of power in the Russian Ministry Defense of and so a deal was eventually struck. Watlin argues the mercenary revolt may be an official for Ukraine. They were making slow progress in their offensive and so any disruption to command Russian and control, in addition to the destruction of their logistics network that's been happening, will make it easier for them to make progress in the field. So I think the Ukrainians are fairly pleased by what transpired. Charles Kula Desma, London. Was it a coup attempt or just protest? a Is the Wagner paramilitary force still in business or part of Russia's military now? Is the head of Wagner you have any progression, a traitor marked for death or safe in Belarus? These are just few a of the unanswered questions in the wake of provisions aborted March on Moscow over the weekend in a television address to the nation that was carried on American cable news live. Vladimir Putin told soldiers in the Wagner group today you have the opportunity to continue serving Russia by entering into a contract with the of Ministry Defense or other law enforcement agencies or to return to your family and friends. Whoever wants to can go to Belarus. The promise I made will be fulfilled. Putin then met publicly same with the Russian generals. "Right now, let's get back to Ryan Gorman on NewsRadio 1055 w E. R C. I'm writing Gorman in for the team here today, while they hopefully enjoyed the day off, Of course, on this Memorial day, we all continue to honor and remember those who courageously served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice while doing it, And it's important to keep their families and loved ones left behind in our thoughts today. As well. So a big topic of conversation lately has been UFO's. In fact, recent videos confirmed by the Pentagon have led to a 60 Minutes piece on all of this, and a report from our Intel agencies and the Department of Defense is set to be delivered to the Senate Intelligence Committee in just a few weeks for more on this intriguing topic, I'm joined by Nick Pope. UFO expert who ran the British government's UFO project. Nick, Thanks so much for coming on. How did you first get involved in working on this issue, including four the British government? Where I fell into it almost by accident. I was a career civil servant in the UK Ministry of Defense and you get posted around every few years and I happened to be due for a move Justus the point where the vacancy cropped up for this, this amazing post thing that we have or had At the time in the ministry defense where the job was to research and investigate the UFO phenomenon, So I had no previous interest in it. Never seen anything myself. No strong beliefs. I was just given it to do as a government job. What was the reason for the government wanting someone to do that job? It really comes back to the frank that within government, the UFO phenomenon, whatever its true nature, maybe, and we really don't know it's viewed as a defense and national security issue. I mean, I imagine it's basically the air Force, particularly saying If there's something in our airspace we need to know Who will want it is and what they want to doing. So, your role in the British government heading up this UFO project. What exactly did that entail? Whatever. There was a sighting, you would be the one to go investigate. Tell us how that worked. It's a mixture of research and investigation on it's not quite like the X Files. We didn't go, I guess sort of wandering around John warehouses with flashlights and things like that. It was much more. We were based out or Ministry of Defense headquarters building. So our job was often too brief Sr Starks on this, and most of the investigation we did was done. By doing things like looking at radar data, Seeing what whether we've got anything on space tracking radar systems, more standard military air defense radars. If we got photos and videos, they would go to intelligence community imagery analysts so so that was the way that we did it. There was a mixture we got about two or 300 reports. Each year, So I had to investigate those, but also more. Interestingly, I guess handle the policy on this. What is the government line on UFO's? What do we think we're dealing with? Are there any threat? Are there any opportunities? I'm joined By Nick Pope UFO expert He ran the British government's UFO project is a DVD out aliens at the Pentagon, which dives into the issue of government UFO programs. When you're investigating UFO sightings are there certain categories that they're placed into some, Maybe you're more likely to be easily explained. And then there are others that say, fit a pattern. But don't offer any simple. The answer's Yes. I mean, you look at these sightings on a case by case basis, But inevitably, it's more likely that you're gonna pay a lot of attention to sightings where, For example, these things have seen by pilots, whether it's commercial airline pilots or particularly military pilots, where they're tracked on radar on where you have And of course, everyone has seen these recently..

Handle the policy on this. What is the government line on UFO's? What do we think we're dealing with? Are there any threats? Are there any opportunities? I'm joined by Nick Pope. UFO expert He ran the British government's UFO project is a DVD out aliens at the Pentagon, which dives into the issue of government UFO programs. Of course, everyone has seen these recently. These Thies Videos of US Navy jet chasing whatever these things are. So those are the sorts of cases that really kind of get your attention because of the quality of the witnesses. And because you've got things like forward looking infrared camera videos, radar data, another technical data measurement and signature intelligence. Do you get the sense that there are more sightings these days? Or is it just that, with better, more accessible technology, the sighting seem to be more newsworthy. It's a really interesting question. I honestly couldn't say. I think he could be a little bit of both. And the other thing that's happening is that because this is now being treated so seriously in government, there is an unidentified aerial phenomena task force set up in the Office of Naval Intelligence. As I mentioned director of National Intelligence is now drawing up this report for Congress. What that's doing, is it? It's encouraging people who've had sight things, particularly in the military, who would have previously stayed quiet. It's encouraging them to come forward and speak out. So I don't know if we're having more of these, or it's simply that more people are speaking out. We got better ways of capturing the data. Better cameras. Better satellite imagery, for example. What would some of the other possibilities be? If these UFO's are an extraterrestrial life monitoring visiting Planet Earth? What could these UFO's potentially be? What are the options? Other options would include that it's our technology secretly being blind, tested against one part of the military by another on classic bureaucratic kind of left hand, right hand situation, I think thats unlikely. I don't think they would have let it go. So far, you know, congressional inquiry briefings, classified briefings except etcetera without someone saying, Hey, look, that was us. The other possibility, of course, is its Russia or China on that. What we need to find out and these experiences with objects doing things that were just not able to do based on our level of intelligence and our technological capabilities. This all tracks with stuff that you heard when you were working for the British government, and even before that stories that have been around for a long time that I'm sure you looked at in researched when you were doing your work for the British government's UFO project.
