Scotland's Long Road to Independence

"My name's george. Miller and my guest this month is rory scoth on an edinburgh based writer who has an article this month. Addition of the paper entitled is scotland closer to independence. Rory is also co author of the book. Rock wins a treacherous guide to the state of scotland published. Twenty sixteen. And when. I spoke to him recently. I was kid to get his update. On the current state of scotland. The two thousand sixteen brexit referendum in which scotland voted strongly to remain in the eu. And boris johnson's twenty nine thousand nine hundred. Uk general election confirmed growing divide between how scotland and england see their respective futures. The scottish national party secured a fourth successive electoral victory in last month's scottish parliamentary elections but the path to independence is still far from straightforward. So where does the snp go from here in pursuit of that objective. We'll come onto that. But rory's piece begins with a comment margaret thatcher made in the nineteen eighties whereas she offered a vision of modernisation. She asserted her. Opponents wanted to turn the uk inter museum society. Rory rights thatcher underestimated the appeal of museum society labor overestimated last him. To tell me more was one of the key things to understand about. Thatcherism is that this was not a return to the nineteenth century. This walson the state stripping away all the gains of one thousand nine hundred eighty five. There was an element of -absolutely. But really it was something new the power of neoliberalism as i think a lot of people and left know very well. The power of neoliberalism was at a offered. Something new offered a form of progress that a lot of people on the left had thought until then the right could not offer. It offered a vision of the future. That kind of took the left by surprise. I think

"Of black lives matter also anti Semitic, both of them anti American trying to overthrow the country. And he doesn't mind mention them as grave domestic terrorist threats. And yet look at what they did to our country during the course of the summer, and you didn't mention What is F B? I told him, which is 60% of hate. Religious crimes in this country had done against Jews, mostly Orthodox Jews, and it's not done by neo Nazis. They're bad enough. Don't get me wrong, but it's done mostly by Relatively recent immigrants from the Middle East, as well as African Americans in Brooklyn. Why is it that he doesn't mention these things? Stephen Miller. Because for the left control over the narrative is everything because if if your narrative is that the biggest problem facing the American people Are radicalized white citizens. And that, of course, empowers you to do all kinds of things that you want to do throughout the government, including things that you know my organization America first legals involved in litigation on like critical critical race theory in government discrimination. And awarding some people benefits and taking benefits from others based on skin color. It's the narrative that is the moral predicate further whole agenda and also make the point. Everything is really important. When we're talking about domestic terror. I would say that what is happening on the streets of Chicago, by any definition is domestic terrorism gangs running rampant running wild Murdering people in broad daylight drive by shootings, killing woman killing Children happening on our streets That's domestic terrorism and under his department of Justice. Well, those people will not get any help. All over the world in foreign countries. People can come here by the millions and claim asylum. All it's peppered with statistics about minor league major league the evangeline league which was really interesting to me. Because i didn't realize our background here. How important minor league baseball was in this part of the world. One of the reasons for writing the book was to keep alive. The legacy of the crowley millers the ballpark that they played in that still here. In fact it's looking better than ever and The storied past of the evangeline which was established in one thousand nine hundred eighty four and lasted until nineteen fifty seven. There was a little time out for world war two right but just a colorful league. In fact it was known as the best literally in baseball and of course that was before there was literally it was classed d and it produced a number of major leaguers a hall of famer named how new hauser who won over two hundred games in the majors and virgil firetrucks coach nicknames. E3 2021 Schedule is Announced

"E three twenty twenty one schedule has been revealed. Didn't know ladies and gentlemen of course next week is e- three a giant live show. It's back it's digital only happening of course. Starting on the twelfth through end of the fifteenth saturday the twelfth of june through the june fifteenth today easily put out a press release. I will start at the most important. Paragraph hosted by alex mendez. Jackie jane and greg miller the injury twenty twenty one broadcast feature major publishers showcase upset major publisher showcases press conferences industry panels extended livestreams special celebrity guest appearances and more now. Here's what i put in an interesting addition. I'm about to get into the schedule of events for what they've done but what you're going to find. Is they basically are saying. Hey we start at ten. Am and there's all these different things that happen if people are like dude this fucking socks. This isn't a schedule. This just you saying what people are on what days which is fine. But you're not putting out an actual times e three themselves tweeted this today real talk. Everyone would love a complete schedule. Every time listed on it but announcing days slash times is one hundred percent perogatives of the many participants the many partners participating in this year show. So we'll keep updating you on here as they choose reveal so you stay in the loop cool. Cooley i thought it was a weird wanted to do though you know what i mean like a weird messaging kind of like throwing the publishers under the bus but well it's weird. I definitely want to talk about this. So i'm happy. We're positive here. Because i do think it's great that he threes being transparent about this and explaining why we're choices are being made but i still don't understand why we're choices are being made sure. This is putting on the publishers. It is on the publishers. They are the ones doing this. But at this point why haven't they committed already like why is it. Each is the ring when the esa right now. Is the ringleader. Supposedly trying to coordinate everything.

Joshua Miller: The Lies That Keep You From Our Greatness

"Title of the book is i call bullshit. Live your life not someone else's and why i chose. That title was purely. Because when i look at the twenty years of working with leaders and individuals across the country And i've read the books. And i subscribe to the models. I've i've walked on the coals. I've been to the seminars. What i found. Is that a lot of these. Books are great in content. They're great in awe insight but sometimes they lack on the substance of application. What do you actually do with what you just learned. And for me. When i was toying around the idea of writing a book Some people approach me a couple years ago as usual. write a book on leadership development or executive coaching. I said It doesn't with me. There's enough books out there to do that. And as i've been thinking about writing a book for close to three years it hit me. One day where i realized what's missing And what. I would like to read personally as a book that just cut through the bullshit that takes the essence of all of these. The great work that that that people in our industry have done but just D- complexities tapes it. Distills down to what's the bare essence. What is it telling you. What is it teaching. And then how do you go. Apply it because an insight without application is is really just an insight. It's nothing else. So i call bullshit is is has kind of a double meaning. It's one is. I call bullshit not so much on people or the industry but it's really on the conversations were having and it's time that we stop living lies and really start asking ourselves pertinent questions. We gotta get more curious about who we are what we're doing. Stop complaining stopping a victim and start getting curious around. What can we do about it. And that's what this book is really drives home.

"Dr miller. Thank you so much for joining me again. You are such a voice of encouragement for me. As i listen to you on a daily basis in trying to make sense of really what can only be described as confusion and chaos. That something that you describe it as often as well whether it's coming to gender identity and the sexual and moral revolution that you talk about so much you're just the intricacies of policy in court decision so first of all. Thank you for that. Can you give a little bit of first briefing. Courage meant to christians who really just want to bury their head in the sand and to not look at. What's going on culturally and politically and just pretend like none of it's happening because we don't know what to do about it. Do you think it's important for us to kind of keep abreast on what's going on and why looks great to be with you. Allie beth and yes. I do want to offer that word of encouragement to christians not to stick our heads in the sand and try to ignore or be oblivious to what's going on because it's not just that we we have to be faithful to christ in the midst of our times we. We have to understand what we're up against there but it's even more importantly out of love for christ's church for fellow believers for our own children and grandchildren need to be thinking through these issues even ahead of the culture in order to be faithful when the culture throws the the next the next weapon at us and frankly they're coming fast and furiously and just love her own children and grandchildren and the determination that they grow up and be faithful to christ. It requires that we be very aware of the things going on around us. i understand. It's daunting and painful. And it's complicated. But the church of the lord. Jesus christ has all the resources we need to confront these issues with faith and without fear. That doesn't mean that that we don't understand what we're up against but we respond with faith and without fear. So that's a good word of encouragement knowing the truth is a good biblical. Principle and denying reality is never faithfulness.

Netanyahu's war on Hamas [TEST]

"Hello and welcome to the may twenty twenty one podcast from the moment diplomatic. My name's joel. Miller and my guest. This month is shall end. Download a jerusalem based journalist. Who for five decades has been covering israel on the wider middle east. Charles's many publications include a biography of Jamea and most recently a book reflecting on his years as jerusalem correspondent and this month's edition of the paper he's written about the rise and rise of the israeli right. He argues that. The israeli left has consistently failed to understand the uncompromising nature of netanyahu's project despite growing evidence when i called charles in jerusalem a few days after a ceasefire between israel and hamas was announced. I began by asking him what had struck him passionately in the past two weeks. To tell you the truth sweat Rarely surprised me was getting phone. Calls from people in france including jewelries. Think what happened. Everything was quiet for years now. Suddenly everything blows up lays now a new war and what happened with palestinian. Ever seen what quiet. Nothing quite. The fire was ready to burn all the elements where here to have an explosion of violence. No basic problem was his. Netanyahu will for ten years had as his policies to make military agreement cease-fires under the conditions that he would let Qatar bring shoot cases of cash. Do gaza do finances hamas and on the other side in the west bank. No political agreement. Everything is stuck and Settlements are growing within sixty percent of the west bank so everything was just growing growing growing until it grew up so in a sense. You're saying it wasn't a surprise. Did it feel like a repetition or does it feel different this time. Listen i was expecting at some point in time this would happen. I was surprised with the rapidity with which It it became a full scale war between the gaza and israel. This when we're very fast. So this should worry. I believe the policy makers in israel ended order abroad. It dallas sense of deja. Netanyahu has been prime minister since two thousand nine and so i know you've studied the israeli right as part of part of your long career as a journalist. Is it possible to say what netanyahu's endgame is is that clear. Yes preventing the creation of a palestinian State Wrong side israel and to stay in power so vilo survival political survival netanyahu and his old firmly believe the only he has the ability to protect and save the jewish people in israel and abroad so he staying power is of the utmost importance. This is why also he believes and these fighting role judiciary processes that brings him to court for corruption. And so. how do you read. Netanyahu's personal position. Today after the last the events of the last ten days given what you've said about the legal charges that he's facing and the fact that he hasn't been able to form a government for the fourth time. First of all the round of violence between israel and hamas for the cinci came back to power in two thousand nine. Netanyahu has very coaches now to get into full-scale war nut with his better in journals. Not with us is about self Of violence in for example. The two thousand fourteen. This happened without the netanyahu.

Uh so that's that's sort of what i do now. I got to this point sort of chasing fossil plants in the american west. Were you always interested in fossil plants. Though i mean that that's an really interesting interest for like a child to get into you. Don't hear that a lot. I mean i was a dinosaur kid. I know a lot of other dinosaur kids out there but fossil plants. I mean it took me a little bit to get to the point where those were interesting but now i would argue. Sometimes they're more interesting than dinosaurs. But that's harris. The i think in a lot of circles is and i. I started all the time constantly. Battling the data serve posts. Make sure that the plants get the same sort of airtime So i was a mineral kit up at eastern washington state. So i was always after you know courts pistols. Pyrite things like that mine tailings. That were there around. The ranch grew up on. So i kind of discovered fossils a little late-game did have this interesting. Formative experience was really little. i was born in seattle. "Can we stop there and make phone calls ahead And that's something you might not think about if you're not a camper so you might be a camper few spend more time planning the route to your destination than what you're going to do with your destination once you're there i'm guilty of this one as well. That's definitely your thing you're the root guy And then once we figure out where we're going you're taking all the time to look at how we're getting there and then i'm taking the time to figure out what we're going to do when we get there. You gotta make the way. They're fine to. Why do you think we're overnighting at south of the border when we go to florida this summer. I'm so afraid of this stop self. Let's stop the southern version of wall drunk. Yes it's going to be awesome. Okay maisy you. So mike gets He sort of like the kids when we get to our destination of what are we gonna do today. Well there's all that to do. Because i'm the one that's done all the pre prep of figuring out what to do when we get there whereas mike said he's the one that takes all the time and gets us to that destination and i don't really know the the plan to get there. You make it sound. Like i don't care about the destinations we're going to i. I definitely do the research. I find the food joints i find the breweries. The wineries what. You're the one that finds all the national parks. The sides tractions that go to i do some research. I don't know what you're talking about. What maybe there's been like one or two places if you've seen them on diners drive ins and dives that you really wanna go to he..

"Thanks mac alco quick tip that. We're going to leave you with today if you haven't noticed from me saying it four thousand different times. It's all about the press. It makes life so much easier to just grab and go so whether you're traveling in a camper you wanna go camping or you're staying somewhere for the week whether you're at home i highly recommend and i tell myself to do this all the time. It's time to prep be ready with what you want to eat. So that when you go to the store you can get everything that need at once and then prep as much as you can ahead of time especially for us weekend warriors when it's not the summertime camping that would work going and we really only have one day at the campground. 'cause you're getting there friday night. You're staying saturday. And then you have to leave sunday morning to be able to relax and de-stress the more i can prep- at home the better it helps especially if you could threes because then you don't have to worry about the frisbee temperature you can just grab your frozen stuff. Throw it in the fridge of a tiny gets to the campground. You're at the right temperature in fridge. Everything's ready to go grab cook. So it's all about the prep. Well i hope we made you hunkin and thank you for listening to this nine needs to go prep for this week as i knew special prep yesterday and sunday. It's all right. We'll get have a great week..

"Mac loves it grossly crusty bert. I don't understand. Why would set it on fire. And i need. That doesn't chris but i am. Definitely golden brown I take my time roasting the marshmallow. And we've tried a couple of different ways to make the s'mores recently. We've also found these new chocolate filled marshmallows. Those are pretty good but it's difficult knowing like is the chocolate enough on the inside and Cooked while enough on the outside but graham cracker marshmallow buttercup. Yeah so but not the whole peanut. Been on your defense either thins or you need the miniature peanut butter cups because if you try to put a whole peanut butter cup on your s'more it's way too much you've raised way but it's the whole sugar ratio because sometimes the peanut especially reece's ones for the holidays and the chocolate the peanut butter ratios wrong. You can have the wrong chocolate. The marshmallow ratio. When you're making your more. I'm i'm crazy but you know what could solve that. We tried this making this. Moore's with the strict cookie. Yeah that was a new thing. We just tried this year and the kids seem to like that. Most to agreements cookie marshmallow. Yes because you just put the bottom of the cookie on the inside. So that the fudge bottom melts a little bit with the marshmallow. Okay to try again. We only tried it once. And i think the kids just ended up eating all the cookies instead of using it as a small more your traditionalist though you like just straight. Graham cracker marshmallow. Pc shop do you. Did you like when we use the pie iron last summer. That was good again. We're brand new to the pie iron. So it's we need to get used to it. Because i feel like we haven't figured out completely yet but yes i also think the fighter we re using was ridiculously thing. It was a little hot so But pires are these cast iron pieces that you put right into the fire to make people make Pie apple pies you can make you can make pizza and my grandmother used to do that with us all the time. Just two slices of white bread. Some pizza sauce cheese pepperoni over the fire for a couple of minutes..

"Have repaired the other one but the cost would have been the same as just buying a new one so he got a fancy like he said camp chef grill which has been really nice and wallets not as easy to set up and breakdown as the road trip grill that we use so much with camping tailgating. It's still is fairly easy. It doesn't take you more than five ten minutes if get it going. Yeah if if that. If that. And it's like i said it's very versatile because it's too gas burners that i can put a grow box on i don't have a blackstone but i have a cast iron griddle that goes on top of this or if we wanna boil some water for some passers corn or just do a saute or something. We don't have to heat up the inside of the camper. I can take one of those off of the grill and just use the gas burner right there now. Our camper also has a pulled out burner but that thing gets in the way when we're trying to cook so i just prefer to do everything right on the camp chef so we highly recommend that you have a travel grill but there are so many options out there. You wanna find the one that works best for your family for us right now. The two burner camp chef was the best. The coleman road trip girls are still out there. They're still fantastic. They have other a weber small grills. Mike keeps telling me he needs a big green egg. Mini max that he's going to camp with. That's gonna charcoal. It's gonna happen but you just find what's best for you in terms of your storage space and the needs of your family when you're when you're cooking and this this particular set up well for us now on the inside. We do still have a full kitchen setup with a stove top and oven and our microwave that we do use a lot for cooking. And by we. I mean ashley eases a lot for cooking and we really don't cook a ton inside like mike said. We tend to cook everything outside when we're camping but it's really nice to have the stove top and that especially for When it's raining or things like that in an earlier episode we went through kind of the rundown of supplies that you need but the biggest thing that we use inside most of the time. And from what we're gonna talk about today is a nonstick frying pan a cake pan which we use for a ton of different things and then a slow cooker with what we have found has helped so much with cleanup. Are these new while newer to us. Probably not new but reynolds brand slow cooker liners so they're just like a bag that you put in the slow cooker that is created to handle the temperature..

"I'm ashley i that and we are be. Moore's it's cool outside the player places one. Yeah but when. I look outside. I still see a lot of snow and i know that we have more snow coming and that makes me always think about what i want to eat. What comfort food is going to make me feel. Warm and cozy. Shrimp invader makes me warm fuzzy. That is really good. But also when we're meal prepping. Because i like to prep for the week because i always hate as we get closer to five o'clock in the evening and everybody always asks me. What are we going to have for dinner. And if i've been at work. All day i hate trying to figure it out on the fly so i have a frame that there's a picture behind it on us. The glass with a dry erase marker that. I like to plan out for the week especially for dinners. What we're going to eat because it just makes our life easier than it. It helps keep the schedule because we know what days were busy and we know we can throw something in the crock pot on tuesday. Because we're not gonna be home for dinner whereas maybe wednesday we're all going to be home and we have time to do more substantial meal and we do same things when we're camping especially if were just camping for the weekend or as people call us the warriors when it's still during school time during work time not in the summer when we have a lot more flexibility but this time and we're trying to plan or summer trip. Were starting to think about camping food..

"And that was mount rushmore. Okay that should be on everybody's bucket list to at least see it in person. One time the pictures that you see in your history books or when you're watching tv shows don't do the mountain justice. It is amazing now. We only took a half day to go see mount rushmore and that was more than enough for us to look at the museum aspect of and to be able to walk outside now. One of the parts of mount rushmore. When we went out was closed the there was an artist trail the sculptor studio. That was closed at the time. But there were still plenty to see if you're going to take a half day to see mount rushmore. We highly recommend that you do the second half of the day so that you're there at night the nighttime ceremony that they do every night is amazing. It truly is a here in this huge outdoor theatre. The mountain is in the background behind the stage. There was what maybe a twenty minute video program and then they had the veterans that were in the audience assists with the flags at the end of the night and it was just something to behold keep. We were there for the fourth of july. And i never realized how much i wouldn't care that i didn't see fireworks at year until we saw that like that replaced it and nothing else will ever come close to that it's periods so my rushmore is cool. You definitely want to go see it but half day is really all you need now. If you're adventurous and up for a little longer of a drive about ninety minutes away you can hit. The badlands and there is a lot to see in the badlands. The babylonians is about two hundred and forty four thousand acres. And most of what you're seeing there are rock formations and Fossils and wildlife. That are all through the badlands. The name badlands. Even though it looks beautiful there is from the lakota tribes word for that area that the word translated to badlands. Just something funny from its own website from the badlands national park website. That went in one thousand nine hundred twenty two. It was first proposed as a national park. The suggested name was wonderland national park. Why gives a little different connotation for it. Now when you go to the badlands you must bring lots and lots of water sunscreen and sunscreen. It is so hot there you remember. What the rangers said to us when we asked yes because it was what like ninety six ninety eight degrees and she said it was actually. Yeah this is really cool. A cool temperature like god. We are sweating the other thing to explore the balancer some trails and stuff. You can walk on but pay attention. Because we were walking around and delaney. Our youngest just happened to go. Oh look there's a deer and there was a baby. Deer tucked up underneath one of the rocks in the shade that everybody was just walking by except she saw it and there was. Yeah so you get to see. Lots of wildlife at the badlands. The colors of the rack formations are amazing. They have great ranger programs. They are to learn about the fossil and the animals that used to live a long time ago. that are extinct there now. but it it is definitely really cool to see you know. What else was cool when we were out at. The badlands was right outside the entrance to the badlands. Minute man missile site. I know and we didn't even know that that national historic site was there. We just as we were turning right to go to the badlands. We happen to see a sign pointing to the left saying minuteman missile national historic site and we said Okay i guess we'll check that out of the way out now. I knew that was a chance. Because that's where a lot of those. Missile sites are there in the middle of the country. But i didn't realize that one would be right outside the entrance of a national park now. The thing that was to remember about this place is a. The museum is one location. But they have an offsite actual silo tour. That's a little bit away. But you need tickets in advance for and we just happened to get there too late in the day and they didn't have any tickets available to be able to go to the actual silo site but the museum itself was really a walk back in the time it was crazy and it was interesting for our kids to see the history because they had never really learned about the cold war. They're also still young But it was just really interesting to see now and mike says. Get your tickets in advance. We're not talking about the morning going and getting tickets. They open up tickets ninety days in advance to get into the silo tour. It's like going to disney. You gotta give six months in advance so right now. They're not doing the silo tours. Where you go down into the Into the actual silo you can just go to it But if you're planning for future trips and you know that you're going to be going there and you wanna to see the mission control area in. The silo definitely remembered ninety days in advance to go get those tickets. So we've discussed a lot of south dakota already and quite a bit of that is in our memory. Banks being some of the coolest stuff that we have seen. I don't think i'll remember driving up the entrance to the parking lot of walter. Kazak place was ridiculously. Hugh now wall drug as we were driving in south dakota four hundreds of miles before we got there as we are driving across the state we would see billboards advertising this and free ice water which i guess when you're traveling out west back in the day that's something you're gonna wanna stop and get and it's definitely nostalgia. Four wall drug it originally opened in nineteen thirty one and during the great depression which this is peak. Time that they're opening up people didn't have much and they definitely didn't have ice or a way to get any Any of that so to get people to come visit the their big thing was free ice water. When you go to wal drug now you can still get free ice water. I think it's still like nickel coffee or tencent coffee. They have dining. They have different activities for the kids. Like we took pictures of our kids on jack. Lopes out there that were giant dinosaur. That scared the bejesus at every metron dinosaur. That looked like it was coming out of jurassic park and so many gifts and souvenirs that are there. If you can think of an item you can find it at wall drug. Well maybe not a kitchen sink but they did have pretty much everything else now to give you an idea of how big wall drug is for wall. South dakota wall. South dakota has eight hundred year year. Long residence wall drug pulls about two million visitors every year. That's ridiculous that's crazy. That's the kind of draw that it has so definitely. If you have. I would say thirty minutes. You need to make sure you do that. Thirty minutes it might take thirty minutes. They have tons of free parking though but there are so many people that are there. It's definitely You're gonna it's gonna take some time to walk through all of it. It was not a national park that we went to but the last part that we wanna talk about that was about forty minutes away from rafter j more that we stayed was custer state park custody. Part was amazing. We hadn't really even looked at all into it because we're focusing on national parks and just said.

"Was astounding. And i enjoyed the campground. Because when you first pulling you're pulling in right off the main road and hill city and i pulled in And we're gonna hear all these trucks in the construction. No because the entrance to the camp ground is a salad half mile. Three quarters of a mile before you actually enter the actual campground itself. It's like the long ranch driveway. That you see on the tv shows like if you're watching dallas or yellowstone or something. They have the mile long driveway. Before you actually get to where you're going so. The place that we stayed is called rafter. J ranch in hill city south dakota we stayed at a full hookup or site which meant that. We had water and electricity and the sewer hookup but they lots of different levels of rv sites. I see since we went. They actually have premium sites with concrete pads and tables and chairs at now that you can rent but looking at their new information depending on the style of rv site that you're looking for it's gonna cost you between sixty four and ninety nine dollars a night which is not bad considering the location. You're at everything you're around and the amenities at rafter. J are pretty phenomenal. The pool was also and it was heated which was really nice not counting even the hot tub that they had. But if you don't have an rv and you're interested in checking out the rafter j ranch. They do have tent camping Or they have cabins that you can rent. And there was quite the spread of cabins where you could choose extremely rustic cabins from about eighty three dollars a night. All the way up to it was called like a ranch house style cabin which looked super fancy for about two hundred forty dollars a night and these are offered the peak seasons so this is in the middle of summer from june to august that everybody wants to go out there because the weather was beautiful. You forget that they get feet of snow in the wintertime and Just wanna stay there forever now. We unfortunately were out there peak-time because we were out there over the fourth of july holiday which was an amazing experience in and of itself. But you can definitely see that they do get feet of snow because some of the roads actually had signs road closed october first to march first or snowmobile traffic. Only during this time and that's a lot of snow for talking. That's how you get so at rafter. J bar ranch. They have some of those amenities that mike was talking about. They have a playground for the kids. That was really nice. Nicely setup. they have back houses. They have a snack bar by the pool. That you could also get some food at For dinner if you didn't want to cook they have wi fi throughout the campground. They have camped security. They do have a dump station. If you didn't get one on your site if you need to fill up some propane gas they have that available a really nice ranch store there and then over the weekend they even host pancake breakfasts. That people went to that was just a few dollars. It was totally affordable. And worth it to go there. It wasn't we unfortunately. Were there during the week so we only heard other people talking about it but not many campgrounds offer that amenity which is nice especially giving where you are. It's not like you can just walk across the street to the diner. Whatever because it's kind of on a busy highway that goes through hill city. But you do have to go a mile or so before you find anything like a gas station which i had to had venture out and when mike says busy highway. It's not like in the east here for us of busy highway when we turned into rafter j bar and it was a four four lane highway two lanes going each direction and we had to make a left to leave it with the camper and i was like. Oh my gosh. There is no way working to be able to get through these four lanes to be able to turn left onto this highway. Let me tell you if we saw a car every five minutes it was a big day so busy highways they are not like busy highways out out out west now we charles rafter j bar because it was a beautiful park it had been recommended through a facebook campaign group that were a part of and it was also a fantastic base camp for all of the parks national parks in store sites that we wanted to visit. Would we visit like six or seven national parks and the state parkway we were there. It was five national parks and one state park and the state park in itself. You could spend days at just exploring everything and we have talked about. If we go back to that area we want to spend a lot of time in the state park. And i even wanna try to stay in the state park they actually had in state park custer state park which will talk about the second even lodges that you could say there that looked beautiful but the closest state park to rafter. J bar in south dakota was thirty minutes away and it is jewel cave. Joel can is the third largest cave in the world or the longest cave in the world right now. It is closed because their doing work on the elevator. Their website says that they're going to be open. Probably the summer of twenty twenty one. But if you're out in that area you definitely want to check out. Jewel cave the drive out. There was nice too because you could. You could look up into the mountains to try to see wildlife as you're driving along the road and then you sudden nerve the staring at national park that you didn't see coming the next one in it's very similar with it was forty minutes away. Kind of in the other direction was wind cave. Which is the first national park for caves the first cave national park. They offer not only cave tours but they have so hiking available above the cave where you can see so much wildlife like bison that they have roaming there if you're gonna go to jewel cave in wind cave. We highly recommend that you wake up early and you get there when they are opening so that you can get your ticket to get into the cave because tickets do sell out fast for these cave tours and a little tip to its chilly in the cave. It may be ninety degrees outside. But you're in the cave and it's easily in the fifties. You're gonna wanna have a long-sleeved shirt or sweatshirt with you and probably a hat. Keep the water off your head. Because it's wet down there you don't realize it but you're underground and the chances of you getting wetter. There next park that we went to was closer. It was only twenty.

"Prize so i spent a lot of the time during the year when we're not camping looking at targets in the dollar spot or something like that are marshalls. Or there's a a discount store near us called tuesday morning but all look for things. Small things like a dollar apiece little activities like coloring activities or painting Like son catcher things. I've done before activities that they can choose one of on days that there's yucky weather or really long travel bees that they have their own and they get really excited to be able to look in the bags and choose that thing to keep them busy another great place to look for stuff for this kind of bag idea. Five below has got some interesting cheap kind of coloring in quick things to do. That would be good for the car to do in the camper when it's a nasty day. Oh yeah and a lot of these things that i get are disposable because we only have so much space so it's not like big toys or action figures on buying them it could be Silly erasers it could be a small new set of crayons and different colors or something but just something to keep them occupied for them to have fun with but not necessarily like a long term investment thing. So i'm doing a lot of the driving. And i like to be entertained. To and one of the great things about driving is there are visually to games. You can play while you're in the car. Everybody has played find the license plate. Game right right everybody. Yes and usually we do the license plate game either by writing it on a scrap piece of paper or i have found with road trip games before a sticky pad where you can color in the states as you see the license plates and it was really funny a couple years ago when we went out west and we were parked in a parking lot and we had we had just a few states left. And we walked. We're walking to some national park because that's all we did when we went out west. It was amazing. But mike her little boy as we were walking. We got to be that car because we were the delaware license plate that they never see when they're out west right in north dakota's not nobody sees delaware. North dakota We're fort laramie. We went to fort laramie wyoming and there weren't many cars in the parking lot but there was another delaware car and the people searched us out because they heard us talking about something in the gift shop at fort laramie. You know that happened to. When we were at chimney rock we were parked in. His guy came up and knocked on the door that kenya because they were from lower delaware and wanted to know where in delaware we refer so definitely. The license plate game is fun to play. I spy so we're still playing those games as we're driving that you don't need anything really to do it and then just some miscellaneous things that i find are important road. Trips is a trash bag because while we try to use reusable containers and things for lunches we also bring wipes and napkins If somebody needs a tissue or something and you need a place to put that kind of thing you need a place to put their juice pouch trash so a trash bag is always really important with wipes and napkins and things like that. You need a why. I do either way. I left monk. Don't be mean about monk. I do now. Sometimes we can't get where we want to be in one day even if we push ourselves when we were driving across montana those longer thou that definitely took two days and we didn't want to necessarily stop at a campground because we were on our way to yellowstone and so there are other options that you can find if you don't want to stop at a campground or a room over just one night now. Everybody knows you can usually stay overnight at a truck stop but those are loud. We've done that. That was the worst night's sleep probably we ever had in the camper. And they really don't wanna let campers and rv's park in the truck stop area which i totally get because the trekkers are more important keeping the goods flowing back and forth. I get it now. Pilot j does have spots designated just for us with our campers that when we happened to stop at they were already fool and they said just park near the front which was really bad idea because we heard traffic in and out all night long but in an emergency situation not undoable. You definitely could do it. Just be prepared for what you're getting into. Some of our favorites are hitting walmart or cracker barrel or even a kabila's parking lot as long as you call ahead get permission because not everywhere is allowed to do it and some places don't do it just as a company policy so you can call ahead like mike said or just when you get there. You can walk in to ask if you're allowed to overnight park. They're the only the only place we've ever had no is a few walmart's because it was within a certain set city limit and the city didn't allow overnight parking but even that is my least favourite to stay at because walmart's are pretty loud also another one out west wisconsin quiet yet but there was a lot of people parked there and they did like parking lot street cleaning at three. Am in the morning. So that wasn't super fun for me now. Look here's the key to that scenario right if you're gonna overnight in business parking lot please either before they close or the next morning if you can fromm a little love go in if it's cracker barrel. Go grab breakfast. If you can foreseen morning. They opened early. So get a nice big breakfast before you go go on the road or at the walmart stock up on some stuff that you might be needing for your next stop. Didn't have or even cabela's it is a cabal is just pop in. You may not have to buy anything but make it give it a good attempt to maybe throw them a little love by hat or shirt from the area that you're in by anything when you go into kabala today. We did go to today. You're right. Cracker barrel is my favorite to stay overnight at because then we can get a nice big breakfast before we get going. And i don't have to worry about the kids complaining about. When will you need for breakfast. Risk rural yay. And also if you're gonna overnight anywhere that you've gotten permission from please make sure that you leave it looking as nice or nicer than you left it too because people that are abusing this and leaving messes are having walmart's places. Choose not to allow overnight parking anymore and please use that as a rule of thumb at your campground because we love our campgrounds and we would hate for some of them to go away because people are treating in properly leaving piles of trash and causing more work for people that are coming in after you so please disavow rule of thumb. Leave it neater than you found it. We're gonna take a break for a minute. So that we can go get delaney and she can share her ideas of what makes it a good road trip In the car in her eyes high delaney. You excited to go camping in. Yeah we like the plan. Only yup what are you. What are you like to have the most. When you're in the back seat for a road trip. I would definitely like to have like snacks and a water bottle and like a snap for snack. I would prefer like a granola bar snacks We were also talking delaney about games and other activities. We like to do in the car. What's your favorite game that we play in the car. We definitely do proud. I spy with my.

"Rv one happy new year. I bet the biggest question you have is way here have you been. We've been going crazy just as everyone else has because there's this thing called life that we all live in right now. All of our lives are being dictated by the pandemic. So we're all trying to get used to this new normal. Were all trying to get used to. How do we occupy the kids. How do we occupy ourselves and something had to go. Something abol had to be dropped in everything that we're juggling and unfortunately for us because we love this time to talk together and reminisce and think about everything that we do with camping. Unfortunately this was the ball that had to get dropped right now. It's not like we didn't want to record and talk to everyone. It's just every time we brought it up. Something else came and got in the way we live here up in the northeast mid atlantic in camping season for us to bigly ends the end of october. We were fortunate enough to get out twice in november and then before we knew what the holidays are here. And i wasn't ready to get rid of the you know put the camper and storage yet and we looked about taking it out and thanksgiving well to that for us. The drive just didn't make sense. We didn't have enough time to be able to get their setup and joy. Get back and have everybody ready to go back to whatever they were doing for school and then we had already. Winter is the camper which is called the big pink drink which is the anti freeze that has to be pumped into the water line so that they don't freeze and caused damage over the wintertime. People do it themselves. We are not diy fires and so we have The camp camp not camp brown camp dealer dealer thank you. That's the word the dealership and the service department do that for us and we had already gotten done and then trying to get back on the schedule. Have it done again. It just wasn't worth the time or the money for us at this minute to do that to go camping for just a couple of nights and thanksgiving side note. It's actually a good thing we didn't because when we had it winterized there was a little bit of damaged under the camper by the dealership that were waiting to get fixed so probably wouldn't have been a good idea to take it out anyway probably not. It's just more inside. A door got damaged An handle so. It's nothing big. It's just it wasn't our fault and it has to get fixed more static and being able to close the bathroom door. They forgot to do that before they put the slide in and they heard a big crunch and we just have to get that fixed. So that's a good tip for everybody. Remember to make sure your doors and cabinets or closed before you bring your slides in our situation. But it wasn't our fault not our fault not our full and then christmas came. How did that happen. I that was like a blink of an eye and we were putting up a tree in opening presents and then new year's was here last week. That's crazy it was only a week ago. I know and we have thought to schedule something just to say happy holidays. And happy new year. And then we blinked. Winter break was over for us and we roll back to school and back to work so back to work for me which has also kept me from having the energy to record any podcasts. Right now is teaching. I am a teacher. Teaching is always tiring. It is always stressful but right now with the pandemic and us going back and forth from being online only or virtual to than hybrid were on teaching students in the classroom and online at the same time to Going back to virtual which is going to happen. This coming week is just exhausting. That i this is my nineteenth year teaching. So i know my content. I have things that i can pull from. But i'm having to make everything different with this virtual setting. Because i can't give them a piece a paper to write on i have to change it So they can more easily do it online with this virtual thing. You're easily working twelve hours a day or more just to get all that ready. I and it's just exhausting right now. So there's really not that much more time that i had to eat. It doesn't seem like recording podcasts. With take very long because what you guys here is maybe thirty minutes forty five minutes but we have to plan out what we're going to talk about. We have to set that up We have to get a time to record my casted. Then do all the editing and adding things in because while we might sound totally polished and the final edition. It doesn't always start out that way. You're giving us a lot of. We're very polished so actually a teacher. I work from home naturally but like everybody else in the world. As we mentioned is kind of working remotely at home. People are doing projects and we're no different. We decided to take on a fairly massive renovation. Both inside and outside her house of the house and i spent a lot of time coordinating contractors and deliveries and workers. So he was. Mike was our project manager for all of the things that we were getting done in the house. And it's almost done. It's been a six month process and almost just two more deliveries and were there is it. We still have two more deliveries but then we have a couple other odds and ends once. It gets warmer outside that we need to get done in. All of this was happening as we were back to school. And we're home and trying to fit in the last season and finding time to have conversations with you all so we had a lot going on. Now that's where we've been. What are we doing. Now that it's not camping season planning not only dreaming but we're planning for camping were already scheduling our summer road trip the big parts of the trip hoping that life will be in quotations normal or more normal and quote once we get to the summer and wallets only january. You're probably asking. Why are you thinking about what. You're doing in june and july. Isn't that too early. No it's not too early because for a lot of the popular spots and we mentioned this before. I think in another podcast but for a lot of the popular spots if you wanna guarantee a site which is what we wanna do having kids were not really up for rolling the dice is they're going to be a spot isn't there. You really need to start planning six to twelve months in advance. Not only to guarantee a spot but camping and wien has exploded in popularity recently especially because of the pandemic. It's a safer way to travel since you're in your own bubble and so there's not as many spots.

"Started. I might. I'm ashley i mean. I realize this episode is all about what. I'm gonna call being a grumpy old man at the campground. We're not that old. We're getting kind of old now. We can be grumpy though so really what. It's about is kim brown etiquette because when we go camping we go to have an enjoyable time and we feel like. There's just a few rules that you should think about. That are some simple guidelines to keep in mind so that we all can have an enjoyable time. I'm going camping to relax. Not be the campground police right and so we're going to go over a few things that we think are important to make sure that we don't have to be the campground police to each other and that we all can have a nice relaxing time. The first thing we want to say is being respectful of the campsite and camping space. That means when you're camping. Please don't walk through someone else's campground site win their there or went all their stuff is set up. If they're not outside that doesn't mean you can quickly run through. It means if there is a campsite. That's occupied please. Stay out of it. I understand that if you have kids and stuff goes between campsites or whatever that's a little different but if you're trying to get to the playground or the dog path. There's no reason to cut through my sight to get and we've even had people that have walked through our site while we're sitting outside and we just kind of stare at them dumbfounded like what are doing. I mean could be because of jams. We were listening to a pretty good. But i mean think about the campsite as your personal space and most of us are not going to be walking through someone else's front yard or backyard when they're actively using it that brings up also your trash. Make sure you have control over your trash. don't leave. leave your campsite better than when you got there. That's what we always try to do as well and we also bring a recycling bin with us every campground that we've been at has not had recycling but we still keep it separated and bring it home with us when we can but just making sure that you're not leaving a lot of trash around. You want to leave the space. As mike said better than you found it so that we can all enjoy that space. Your fire pit is not a trash can right. Don't burn trash all right so the second thing is about lights on the outside of your camper in nighttime look. I'm not corey hart. I don't wanna wear my sunglasses at night. When i'm sitting at the campfire. Be respectful of your surroundings and the other people around you. I the led lights that come with the campers nowadays can feel like the sun's shining on you and i understand having them on at night when you're outside and you're trying to get things put away or you're trying to get everything cleaned up but when it is time to go to bed those landing lights and the The side awning lights. Just turn them off so that other people don't have those light shining on them and could just have a better night's sleep without that coming into their camper now. That's not saying we don't mind if you have your if you have a little light that shines down by your steps you can see your status or if you have a porch light. That's usually an amber color. It's not super bright white. Led's that's mostly okay as long as it's not like blaring right in somebody's window we're talking about the auto lite your year. Ground effect lights the light center the fancy ones on the underneath of your camper. That stuff is cool to look at when you're outside if you're inside or even not at your camper just be curious tents like us two weekends ago though that i don't know what they brought the sun i mean we were what one hundred feet away from them and i had to move my seat because it was so bright where we were. What are you doing camping with that kinda late. Just enjoy being outside and trying to see the stars so then it brings up. The next one is be aware of your campgrounds posted quiet hours and the be respectful when they start and when they end again we started this. We're all there to have a good time. If you're camping with friends you're gonna be loud but when it is midnight maybe it's time to turn off the bright as the sun lights and your music. I do enjoy some good tunes but not what. I'm trying to fall asleep and also being aware of where you're camping state parks are going to have a lot different quiet hours than private campgrounds. You're gonna get a much later quiet hours campground or private campgrounds. Then you are state parks but just be aware. Just be respectful of the people around you that maybe they don't wanna stay up as late as you do that night and again ashley said this to begin with. We're not trying to be the grumpy old men here. It's just these are some things that we've seen go on and it's become more prevalent recently that we just feel that we should have this conversation to just make sure that you're thinking about these things as you're heading to the campground we were at another camp ground up in allegany right allegany river campground and we went there this summer. Because it's supposed to be one of the darkest areas in the east coast and we were there to see the stars at night and it was beautiful except to cameras down from us. Started a bonfire that you could see from the move. And they brought floodlights with them so that they could light up there cornhole tournament that they were having with all of the people that they brought with them and that wasn't really what we were looking for in our campground experience. However and we'll talk about this later. That campground was an is on the list to go back to. Because i think we didn't take full advantage of everything that was out agreed. So if you're like us and you travel with your four legged friends got to have him on a leash kind of the law. People there are so many people that don't have their dogs on a leash because they say well my dogs trained enough or my dog's not going to do anything and you just have to be aware that you're never a hundred percent. Sure what your animal is going to do. Especially with all these new other.

"So just be ready for that but it is nice it is shaded so that you can just take a walk if you wanna do beyond just walking around the campground. The fishing pond is nice. Because it does it is stocked with That's there's blue gill some smaller sunfish and it's fun for the kids to go down and get their give their fishing experience without going too far and no fishing license required. Because it's on private property so beyond all those positives there are really from our perspective. Only two big negatives of this campground one is. It tends to get kinda loud at night really on friday saturday nights not too bad but it is because there are a lot of people that are group campaign and they can get rambunctious is the night goes on and so don't expect to have silence to go to bed until maybe like eleven o'clock at night that's being generous. Sometimes it could be a little later but there are quite hours but people are just so excited to go camping on the weekends that it can stay con allowed for a while. And it's not so this next. One really isn't a nighttime issue. It's there are a lot of golf carts here whether you rent one from the campground or people bring their own. They are golf carts. That are whipping around the camp ground. All the time. And there's some golf carts that you would see probably at alexei nascar van or game. That are tricked out with weights and big radios. And sometimes it's a little too much. Sometimes it's okay so just be aware of the golf carts going around. If kids are riding their bikes. Make sure that they're wearing their helmets. And that they're being aware of the gulf carts going around But beyond that we always have a great time when we come to corey. Ville and while every jelly stone is not the same because there are jelly stones. All across the united states. We have really never had a bad stay at any jelly stone. No they're actually one of the f- parks that we actually will look for when we're trying to plan a trip just because we know what we're getting into when we go to the park so if you're looking for a fun getaway whether you are tent camping whether you are camper travel trailer camping or you wanna stay in a cottage or a cabin. We think you should check out either. The coryell jelly stone war any jelly stones. That are near you. What we're going to do now is go. Grab the girls so that they can tell you some of the things that they love the most from the kid's perspective of jelly stone hymac. Could you give us just a couple of things that you like about staying corey voegeli stone. So one of my first ones is definitely every saturday here in amish country. So the amish come up and set up like a stand with homemade goodies. And they have like whoopi pies. Which is like cake. And there's like ice cream in the middle and they also have homemade root beer and homemade lemonade. You've forgot about the sticky buns. They've sticky buns now. Yeah you didn't see him now. Because i didn't get off my bike all right. What else besides the amish The water slides at the water parker. Pretty fun it is pretty cool splash pad that they have here And then probably the jumping pillows you guys do spend a lot of time at the were either there or redoing activities then. We only see you when you're ready to eat..

"And everybody's respectful so we don't really have a problem being right next to somebody without a lot of privacy. It's not like when we were out west and we re there's one camp ground where we couldn't even put her awning out because it would have touched the camper right next to us. Yeah it's not that bad but don't expect like a state park type private sent a site you know. What else is really nice here is they have. Maybe some of the cleanest bath houses that. I've seen it a campground. They are really nice and a lot of them. Are individual so that you when you go into the room. You have your own shower in your own restroom with the lock on the door so that you can take your time in that shower and getting dressed and not worry about a small tight space and it's actually a residential quality shower. They do have a lot of room in them. Compared to what you would find in your typical small bath house or even your camper so for some of the kid amenities we've been talking about. There are really a lot of them to list. But we're our location is. There's a really big field that you can use for playing ball for kicking the soccer ball and right next to that is a nice large playground. That has mulch on the bottom for kids to plan. There are two different bounce pillows a smaller one for the little kids a bigger one for the bigger kids a volleyball net with sand. There's also up the road a smidge or is the pool area which is really nice because it has a really nice splash pad with some water slides and some water features too big pools one heated one just a regular pool and then it has to hot tubs up there as well. One is for families. You can have your little ones with you when recommended for a long time. But it's nice to jump into a warmer pool in the folder. In the early spring they also have cabanas that you can rent up at the pool area. So that if you're looking for just a designated space where you don't have to worry about bringing your stuff. In and out you could be fancying. Rennick amana so they also have many golf that is included in the price of the resort fee and pedal carts which are kind of like recumbent type bikes. Where you're sitting down and pedaling that the kids always have a lot of fun on a little track that they have up at the top also by the playground they have to gaga ball pits which are amazingly popular with the kids right. Now if your kids don't play it yet. I'm sure that they would enjoy it. Every kid that i have met has a lot of fun at gaga our biggest dodgeville. It's sort of like dodgeball. But you're in In an area that you're only allowed to hit people below the waist below the knees. So that's sort of sort of dodgeball. But the kids have a good time. They also have a bunch of other activities. They do coloring. They move outdoor movies..

"I'm ashley by that. And i'm delaney. We a low from the campground. We are camping today. We decided that we're going to do a campground review from the campground that we're at in thankfully we're not very far from home so few here. Some ambient noise like our dog right. Now it's just because we are at the campground and there's a lot going on around us. So the campground we are at is a jellison campground located in quarter ville pennsylvania which is about forty five minutes away from where we live and we liked coming here because it is close to the house so this has really become our goto campground with its close proximity and with all of the kid friendly amenities that they have at this jelly stone campground. Which kind of gives it that resort. Campground feel with everything. They have which we're going to discuss here in a minute. And if you have ever watched the yogi bear jelly stone. That's what it's named after so everything is themed with the bears. They're even character meet and greets with yogi and the park ranger boo-boo and cindy bear. It's kind of fun. I know our kids get excited when we pull in the bears are out on the prowl. And that's what they call it out on the prowl so we are currently in what we call store and stay. I think that jelly stone mike call golic camp and stay but it's a really neat program that they have that we take advantage of spring and in the full when we're still in school or have just started school where we have the option to camp from either thursday through sunday or friday through monday and then leave the camper during the week so a great way to think about this is kind of a short term seasonal where we have everything set up and we just come and go over the course of four to five weeks and so it's really nice. We get setup that first time that we know where we're going for the weekend and everything is all already set up so all we have to do is bring clothes and food and we're ready to go by four o'clock on a friday afternoon. It's also nice because we don't have to do the hurry up and rush to get out on sunday to go home to get ready for school on monday. We can take a leisurely time and enjoy the campground a little longer. So some things to know about jelly stone..

"That we have right now. I really like that. We have our own private bunk room in our camper now because in our other one we only had like it was just our bunks and like we tried putting up curtains and that just did not work at all anything else. I also like how they're both top bunks because like in delaney like fought over. Who got the top bunk in other one. Is there anything you wish we had in this trailer I wish that we had a bigger bumper. Because like when mandalay you're getting dressed in the morning like putting pj's Like it's really like it's tight so we have to like take turns so we fight over. Who gets that.
