Nobody else cared about for many years so I had to myself. Her research is difficult to understand because of its complexity laxity but at its most basic milton studied carpet in all its forms including its electric energy structure among the many facets of of her work. She tested out the properties of carbon when interwoven with other materials for example. If you stitch carbon and an alkali metal together where it becomes a superconductor military it was also the first to come up with the idea of rolling a single layer of carbon atoms into a hollow tube or what we know today as a Nano Tube. It's a primary component of nanotechnology. Milford was also known for her work on graphite. Spouses of fallen service members lobby to eliminate "widow's tax"

"He wanted to make the world, a better place that his sons what have a better life when Tracy Volks husband army, major Paul Volcker was killed in action seven years ago. She not only had to deal with losing her spouse. She also had to worry about her family's financial future. There is an archaic rule on the books that if you get money from the VA that money offsets, any money, that's paid by the DOD a widow can get roughly thirteen hundred dollars a month, tax free from a compensation fund run by the VA, if they agreed not to hold the government responsible for their spouse's death. Some also get a payment from a defense department survivor's benefit plan that their deceased spouse, had paid into, but the nineteen seventy-two law that launched the Pentagon program blocks some of these families from collecting from both funds instead for every dollar a spouse gets from the VA. They lose a dollar of survivor benefits from the Pentagon, it's known as the widow's tax. Tracy said, she's missed out on thirteen hundred dollars every month for seven years. That's more than one hundred thousand dollars. I think part of the reason why my husband served was he knew that if something were to happen? We'd be taken care of now. Democratic Senator Doug Jones of Alabama, and Republican, Susan Collins of Maine are leading a BI partisan campaign to fix the problem. More than seventy senators support the plan hundreds of members in the house back a similar idea. This is a case of tremendous unfairness. We have a not ligation, not only to the service members but to their families people have talked to us, and they expressed that anger. And they're right. They should be angry. Hey, how are you? Kathy Milford lost her husband more than twenty five years ago has been dealing with the widow's tax ever since. I mean it's been pretty amazing, the way this is going three years ago. She decided it was time to start lobbying congress. It's very difficult for me because

Lauren Bogle Bon here late in twenty eighteen APIs does called visit technologies. Formerly tech Saen completed a tower off of I thirty five near Milford, Texas with its laddis style. Structural supports and bulbous top it bears a distinct resemblance to Nikola Tesla's warden cliff tower sometimes called the tesla tower which was an ill-fated power project envisioned by the famous engineer in the early twentieth century the tower was meant to provide free energy all over the planet using wireless technology but instead wound up scrapped by creditors. After tesla couldn't pay the mortgage on the property visits vision statement, rendered in all caps on its website is to power the planet and bring light to the world indicating that its primary goal is indeed power related. They're aiming to offer epic trinity without traditional infrastructure as part of the partnership with Baylor University. If it's anything like tesla system, it could also offer new ways to send signals for radio communications. And. Global positioning systems, and it could bring city to the one point three billion people worldwide who don't have it and don't have the infrastructure to get it. According to company literature. The endeavor relies heavily on what are called zanuck surface waves these waves named for Jonathan Senic a twentieth century, physicist and electrical engineer are electromagnetic waves that harnessed earth surface is a sort of wave guide or conduit for electricity and communications signals so powerful that they enveloped the entire planet without the need for wires. Unlike so many other types of transmissions zanuck waves don't suffer degradation from challenges like solar flares lightning or other electromagnetic pulses sounds like a fairly straightforward corporate experiments so far right setup. Power transmitters in one location. And then the receivers in another tweet the variables of it. And then determine if you can make your theories work in real world conditions. The thing is when it comes to Nikola Tesla's legacy. Nothing is simple. His legend is fertile ground. Not only for real modern science. But also for fringe theories of all kinds down the rabbit hole. Wego let's review. In nineteen forty-three, tesla a brilliant possibly mentally ill. Scientist died in the hotel. He was living in US officials immediately seized the scientists research a partially in hopes of finding plans for a secret death-ray particle beam weapon. And of course, also to prevent access spies from getting their hands on any useful. Scientific revelations hundreds of pages of those documents were subsequently classified and went missing. It wasn't until two thousand sixteen that a freedom of information act. Forced authorities to unveil some of those papers it's possible that Tesla's tower had potential applications in some sort of particle Ray weapon, hence, the classified files. Some have even taken to calling device a piece Ray a kind of defense system that the war hating tesla created to prevent countries from attacking each other a powerful invisible. Wall of force that would keep enemies at bay without resorting to violence of bullets or bombs flash. Forward to modern times fringe, there's pounced. On the fact that to a visit technologies top leaders are ex-military with histories and ballistic missile defense. This at a time when the US commander in chief is speaking about a space-based missile defense system and the residence of Milford Texas, reasonably worried about the towers purpose. But there's more when tesla died in nineteen forty-three and US authorities snapped up his research, they called in a well, regarded electrical engineer from MIT to sift through the papers and note, anything useful. That engineer was Dr John g Trump uncle to President Donald Trump after valuating Tesla's work, John Trump scoffed at many of the geniuses ideas as speculative, but why then were these documents classified for so long? And is it just a coincidence that visits tower was constructed after Trump family member was elected to office? Visit technologies did not respond to the request of the house of works editorial staff for comment on the story. But Michael Taylor. Vice president of communications at visit had indicated. Located previously that the first rounds of testing involved low-power waves that wouldn't have any negative effects on humans or animals and has said that the company only wants to improve the lives of people in the community and quote the world around us. As of June two thousand eighteen the company had planned to conduct tests for perhaps six months to a year. And then use those results to reevaluate its future plans for further experiments as to what sort of plans, those might be. We'll just have to wait and see. "Southbound ninety five over by Milford and the Milford Parkway there's going to be some. Slow moving traffic all Judah, roadwork little further south over by Noah we have, northbound delays, actually in the mirror. Parkway that's a roadwork actually concluding right now so it's a little delayed looking, good in Stanford and. Greenwich not really seeing, any major problems in Westchester county northern or lower Westchester looks pretty good to, eighty seven from right to Tarrytown looking good over the tap is well into Nyack not really seeing any major issues the George Washington Bridge you have that. Upper level roadwork coming to an end then there's, delays at, the toll plaza gonna run you. An extra ten fifteen minutes there Lincoln tunnel, is fine, there's a pretty good, route of my four ninety five and route three really no major delays in that big old construction site that's going to be out there. For a few. Years over by route one thirty nine Jersey City that's a different story we do have some slowdowns there with the closure that. Should be opening up soon if you're traveling in Brooklyn northbound on The BQ. E between basically Atlantic avenue up to. The foot of the bridge going to be slow and southbound. That earlier crash over by Hamilton avenue on the, BQ which is still seeing delays and if you're over on the van Wyk no luck insight just terrible southbound over by jewel avenue going to be that way. All the way towards. The q. interchangeable that roadwork our next traffic update in. Less than ten minutes on WCBS all right let's check out the weather with meteorologist Bill. Deger I pressure control. The weather again for today along with bright sunshine we'll see low humidity still at a high of eighty tonight partly cloudy low. Sixty in outlying areas to sixty six and midtown that high there moves. Off the, coast tomorrow we. Turn more humid as. A result partly sunny high eighty three and then very warm and humid on Monday. Hazy sunshine a high of, eighty nine Right about now seventy two four year. In Ridgewood queens port Washington has seventy two at sixty nine. And clear, in central park w CBS news time five fifty secretary state Mike Pompeo was supposed to be in. North Korea this weekend but President Trump, called that trip off CBS news correspondent Bill Raikov joins Steve Scott and Michael Wallace, on the WCBS afternoon roundup So. Why did the president cancel the, trip so, the president doesn't feel as if there's been enough progress made toward denuclearization. And that comes as. A pretty rare admission from the president when you think that just a couple of months. Ago he said that you. Know there was not going to. Be a nuclear threat anymore back in mid June with Kim? Jon, UN but in this series of tweets he says we want to see more progress from the north, in the denuclearization process at the same time he's also saying China's not, helping out as much as it could be, with that process pointing out the trade disputes it's ongoing between the two countries what does. The latest intelligence say about North Korea's nuclear activity well there is some ramping down in dismantling that's been going on at. One of the sites out there but there's been a lot of talk about how effective that really is and whether it. Was the up to date you know site where a lot, of the processing was going on at the same time there's been intelligence that's been, showing that there's been a digital work. Continuing Toward processing nuclear material and that it hasn't slowed down in any. Sense so the president getting very frustrated by this after saying. Again that North Korea wasn't going to be a threat, anymore the idea, of Pompeii oh going over with nothing really to show in terms of any kind of progress toward this is. Decided to pull back and see, what happens, to perhaps use it as a bargaining chip not only against the north. But as we mentioned. Against trying to in the trade dispute now you mentioned China in the president kind of. Frustrated with them what could. Unfurl there as we move ahead. Here obviously the trade situation a big factor well obviously there's? Been, a lot of talks going on behind the scenes upfront the president blustering meeting trade tariffs against tariff, if you will it's been a back and forth but behind the scenes, we've been hearing a lot of talk about, hopefully coming to some resolution this fall with the trade tariffs especially at the end of. September when they think the biggest hit is gonna hit the American farmer CBS news Bill Rakoff says. The Trump administration feels China is, using North Korea's bargaining, chip to resolve the trade dispute you can, listen to the WCBS afternoon roundup weekdays at three thirty and, five thirty for an in depth look at the day's.
