Brian, back to you. All right, Eric, thank you very much. 8 and a half minutes past the hour and very good morning to you. Thanks for listening. Well, since dynamism is very much in the air this morning, let's welcome to the airwaves, the dynamic. Manishi racha Dori, head of apac equity research at BNP Paribas. Sorry manisha, if you don't get our little inside joke, but yeah, we've been talking about dynamic zero in China a lot. And for our colleagues over at the markets live blog, they'd like to get your views on where you see the most value in China and because that's maybe too broad of a question. Let me ask you, do you see do you see more value in the equity market in the oil patch in materials or in technology? I would say when investing in China, one has to look at it to magically. Number one, the Chinese government has been trying to stabilize the economy using infrastructure investments. So we would think that industry would play an important role. In terms of stabilizing the economy and also in terms of earnings growth going forward, we are already seeing signs of EPS estimates moving up in industrials. So that would be one of the choices I would make. Apart from this, I would say consumer discretionary, which are also sharing similar signs of earnings inflection upward, but very selectively, I would rather focus on those companies which are market leaders and therefore have significant degree of pricing power. Third, I would also look at the beaten down technology sector, which I think you talked about briefly. Because we think that much of the regulatory pressures are possibly already behind us. So those are the three important areas. Finally, also some of the financial banks insurance against selectively, those ones which have relatively better asset quality and very high degree of dividend yields. In fact, high dividend yield is a theme that we are playing across Asia. Manishi does things do things change after the party Congress just very quickly. Of course, Canada, so that is something we are looking forward to as far as the restrictive COVID policies are concerned. Now, one doesn't know, honestly, it is like throwing a dog at this point of time. But post the party Congress in med October, some degree of easing of the policy is the best that we can hope for. All right, manisha, we know you're overweight India as well, so we may flesh out some of those ideas. Many she Richard aureus with us head of apac equity

"Global news. U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan says a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is a real possibility. Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin will be meeting in person for the first time since the start of Russia's war on Ukraine for all the details let's get to Bloomberg's Erica Hurst, hi Erica. Hi, Juliet. Well, as the U.S. administration grapples with increased tension over Taiwan, U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan told David rubinstein on Bloomberg's peer to peer conversations that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is something to worry about. I think it remains a distinct threat that there could be a military contingency around Taiwan. And the People's Republic of China has actually stated his official policy that it is not taking the invasion of Taiwan off the table. Sullivan also insists that the Biden administration hasn't changed its position over the island's status despite China's claims to be the to the contrary, Sullivan met with congressional leaders today to discuss a bill that would designate Taiwan as a major non NATO ally, a bill sponsored by Democrats that has wide bipartisan support. Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of 8 U.S. lawmakers arrived in Taiwan Wednesday, bringing the number of congressional visits this year to the highest in at least a decade. As Russia and China continue to push back against rising geopolitical pressure from the U.S., Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin will be meeting in person for the first time since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, this according to Russia's state run news agency. However, Beijing has not confirmed the trip. The Chinese megacity of Chengdu has extended its COVID lockdown in order to curb the spread of COVID after the capital city reported a 121 cases yesterday up from 90 the day before, a lockdown with mass testing and restrictions has already been in place for a week. New York governor Kathy hochul lifted the state's mask requirements for public transportation, correctional facilities and shelters, one of the last remaining government mandates from the COVID pandemic, huckel credits the new omicron specific booster for the move. We've been watching the numbers. You know, I've been talking about this for months now. It's saying we'd get to this point when the numbers have stabilized, but also the advent of having this booster, I think everyone should get this booster immediately. It starts taking effect and have that higher level of protection. Huckel says COVID numbers are stable, putting the state in good place, new signs will be posted in the subway system that read masks are encouraged, but optional. Global news 24 hours a day on air and I'm Bloomberg quick take powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than a 120 countries. I'm Erica Hurst, weights. This is Bloomberg back to you, Juliet. Thank you, Erica. Let's get to our guests now, Vishnu verathon as head of economics and strategy at Mizuho bang joining us on the line from Singapore. Let's start with what we're seeing in the oil market share a little bit more steady movement after plunging almost 6% on that demand picture. And of course, the strength that we are seeing in the dollar. I mean, when you look at the hawkish Central Bank tones that we're getting the lockdowns in China, what is the picture for the crude market It does look like true prices will be most sensitive to any demand cues that come through like we saw overnight. Nevertheless, absent any fresh demand cues to the downside, particularly what I think would come about from the group market is price stickiness on the way down. So while we see other commodities softening a lot more, oil could turn out to be a lot stickier, primarily because of the geopolitical backdrop as well as moves by the OPEC plus very, very strongly suggesting that they would take action to backstop including if any Iran deal comes through. So these indicators of the crude market suggest to us that the stickier prices are now the more violent corrections and dislocations can be further out. A lot of the stickiness, as you say, coming into the commodities market and driving up these price pressures, what do you think we're going to hear from Jay Powell in terms of, I guess, trying to halt some of these at higher prices and I guess the likelihood that we're going to see a dovish pivot is very, very slim. Oh yeah, I mean, I'm inclined to think so. For most of markets, they've been used to either for the more extreme perceptions double speak from power or for the more measured ones, template statements, checks and hold was a bit of a revelation because it didn't mince words unequivocally in every sense. I think it makes sense that a commentary from J Powell would be quite consistent with what we saw at Jackson hole. And I think the emphasis will be on two things. One is the job is not done yet. Even if inflation starts decelerating simply given how much higher inflation is above ideal levels and the second one would be even if the job is deemed done and probably above 4% levels. It will remain therefore sometimes. So I think these two would be the main statements, even if markets, I think, found joy in allusion to a potential pivot some way down the road. We were just hearing the news as well that Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin are going to meet in person for the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine. Amidst all of what we're seeing with hawkish central banks, the downturn in the economy, how much does this just add to these pressures too? And I guess how concerned are you about a global downturn? I would be increasingly concerned for two reasons. One is that geopolitical picture and even within China, the political landscape is such that economic incentives are not top most political incentives are. And they come at the cost of economic recovery. So that's one. The other is in so far that presidency expresses unchecked support for Russia, then the geopolitical situation could worsen, supply side shocks could remain. And that would

The Chinese mega city of Chengdu has extended its lockdown in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 after the capital city reported a 121 cases yesterday. This, as New York governor Kathy hochul lifted the mask mandate on public transportation as cases of COVID appear to be going down. This is Bloomberg, Brian back to you. All right. Thanks very much, Eric. The time just about ten minutes before the top of the hour is this time we take a look at the media. And it's kind of buzzing through most of the press that Chinese president Xi Jinping made this call that China should step up efforts to master key technology. So I wanted to read you a little flavor of this in the China daily just to see how the state press is treating this. They refer to this as a massive call that will boost the nation's technological independence and self reliance and will help safeguard the stability of industrial and supply chains. The headline for this is that the call for core feats galvanizes the industry and they have experts quoted in this story saying the call is of great significance as it encourages Chinese enterprises to play a vital role in pursuing indigenous innovation and further stimulating market vitality and promoting the country's high quality economic development. So again, this is on the call by Chinese president Xi Jinping. You step up efforts to master key technology in the country. Well, from the global times, and this is about China and Russia together working together to strengthen cooperation to what they refer to as a multipolar world. So this was at the 7th eastern economic forum that's being held in Vladivostok. China will strengthen cooperation with Russia and work together with other members of the international community. And Vladimir Putin had a speech in which he said that Western countries are hurting everyone, including their own people. He said the west is failing. The future is in Asia and for that, you know, you got China's approval as well. All right, 9 minutes now before the top of the hour, that's the media, Steve. Bran, I just want to drop a headline that has just crossed the Bloomberg terminal with the Japanese economy showing better than expected strength, second quarter GDP growing three and a half percent on an annualized basis. The estimate was for 2.9% growth. This, as of course, we've seen the yen arise to weaken I should say to one 44 to the U.S. dollar that obviously helps exporters and we've been seeing some record profits at some corporate entities in Japan. Again, Japan's second quarter GDP growing three and a half percent better than the expected 2.9%. All right, we're going to move to our next conversation and talk about the Apple product launch. One of its biggest launch events of the year, of course, Apple unveiling a new lineup of devices. The event was dubbed far out. Well, joining us now to discuss further is Tom Giles executive editor for global technology. Hello, Tom. So, I mean, there was not a big, big change in the iPhone 13 to 14 is the big news the big takeaway, the fact that they did not raise the prices at a time when inflation is roaring. There was a lot of expectation going into this event that we would see some kind of a price price increase. As you said, we're in a we have been in for much of the year, a highly inflationary environment. We've had supply chain issues for a very long time now. It just costs more to make these devices. Apple surprised us by at least some analysts and prognosticators by not raising the prices of anything. Now, what they are doing is they're packing more into their higher end devices. The devices at the at the highest end of their price range in that $1000 are a give or take range And so the idea is maybe if you're lucky, you get some of those users who might gravitate toward a smaller device, a less advanced device, less sophisticated. To buy that higher end, they did a way, for example, with the tiniest version of the iPhone. And instead, not only beefing up the high end pro, but also adding another higher bigger screen size to the device that comes in at over a $1000. So no price rate, no price increase, but the idea is maybe you get people to gravitate towards the higher end devices. They also added to their watch lineup, the Apple watch, which is which is a popular device for many users. They brought out something called the ultra. This is really aimed at your marathoners, your hardcore athletes, hikers, long distance runners, serious athletes like that. And that's going to come in at about $800. Earlier days for Steve and I am probably not so much now. Is there anything come on? Yeah, that's true Tom. Yeah. I'm just going to tell a stupid anecdote about that. But let's get to the let's get to the business first. Dynamic island, kind of a strange name, this new interface. I want to kick out of that. This is an area at the top of the screen that will essentially you can use that to get certain information, certain pieces of data, whether calendar appointment stock tickers just a couple of examples. When the rest of the screen remains off, it's way of kind of making the iPhone valuable to you as a user. When it's in low power mode or when it's virtually off, that's another way of kind of making this device ubiquitous and essential to us at all times. Even when we're sort of trying to get away from it, trying to power it down, try and put it in little power motor or have the rest of the screen off. Tom, basically the key takeaway. Is there enough packed into this iPhone 14 to boost the replacement cycle from the 13 and potentially take market share from Samsung? The changes that they've made, everyone that we've talked to has said that these are more incremental. There's a speedier chip Apple says it's the most powerful on the market. There's some capabilities to the

Putin and Chinese president Xi Jinping will reportedly meet face to face at a summit in Uzbekistan next week, and while Beijing has yet to confirm that Moscow says it is making preparations, it would be the first face to face meeting between the two leaders since the start of the Ukraine war and would likely send a signal of solidarity against the west. The Chinese megacity of Chengdu has extended its lockdown in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 after the capital city reported a 121 cases yesterday that is 90 more than the day before. When future generations walk these halls and look up at these portraits, I hope they get a better, honest sense of who Michelle and I were. And I hope they leave with a deeper understanding that if we could make it here, maybe they can too. The ceremony was partly a celebration of the obamas historic role as the first black family to reside in The White House and partly a reunion with the bidens and the hundreds of staffers who served across both administrations. Eric, thank you and so nice to have you with us. So let's get to our guest Mark Chandler, chief market strategist and managing partner at bannockburn global. Mark, it's a pleasure. It's been a while since we've had you on the program. So thanks very much for taking out the time. So we had a little bit of a risk on session today. That helped the Euro ahead of the big ECB meeting, and we got back to parody. But the conditions don't look particularly good, especially with the dollar being so strong, what do you see for the Euro moving forward here if we get, let's say, 75 basis points from the ECB. Yeah, isn't that interesting? I mean, 75 basis points of the ECB. And I think it's just about price then. I'm looking at not just what they do in September, but it seems to me between September and October, a 125 basis points. The dollar has been strong. It's been mostly a dollar strength story here, but I think that we're going to be in for a period of a bit of a correction in the U.S. dollar. I think once we get past the ECB meeting, the next focus is going to be on its EPI next week. And remember what happened in July, it was flat. And the early call here for August, it's probably a small down number, a small fall in a U.S. headline CPI first time since COVID first hit. So I think the dollar corrects a bit lower ahead of that. Well, Mark, obviously the ECB, the consensus is what? 75 basis points with headline inflation at 9.1%. They're a little bit late to the tightening game, aren't they? Yeah, I mean, the problem that they have, I'd like to comment that other countries, including the U.S., has been tightening into an economic slowdown. And just earlier on Wednesday, the Eurozone up growth for Q two, something 0.6 to 0.8. I think those days are over. I think there will be lucky to see .2% growth if not negative growth that is contraction in the coming quarters. So the ECB is in a tough position, but I think that the combination. I mean, I think what we should be looking at for tomorrow is not just a rate hike. But the staff is going to provide their forecast and the company imagine what they're going to be higher inflation and slower growth. Yeah, it's more than just slower growth in Europe. It's a full blown energy crisis. Which is not something that really looks like it can be resolved anytime soon. It's true. And I think that's why also tomorrow and Friday, the European energy ministers are meeting and they're trying to work out another scheme to cap prices to cap prices and gas and electricity may be in Europe. Maybe decouple it from each other. And of course, they're talking still about that cap on Russian oil. So I agree with you. It's an energy shock coming out of COVID and the climate. I mean, I kind of think it's three things really, right? Climate COVID and conflict. Yeah, but the one interesting part is that all of a sudden now we're seeing quite a lot of fiscal support. How does that change the equation? Yes, I will see that really in the UK. The new prime minister talking about 200 billion Sterling package subsidies. But I think you're right. And we saw over the past weekend, Jeremy, and other third package, it's largest package so far. I think this is the challenge. I mean, I had thought that after COVID that the budget

I saw some like it's like yeah, a lot of the big names are gone, but the backstory about this young man, Francis TFO is really amazing. He escaped from Sierra Leone West Africa and we all know the turbulence that happened there. He his father eventually wound up setting up a tennis you worked. He started building. He was part of the date. Day labor who built it, and then he became the maintenance guy. Exactly. Um All right, Giant fans. I know what you're going to be doing here on Sunday night. All right. Nation Capital football fans. I assume what you're gonna be doing tonight. Philadelphia Eagle fans. What do you guys gonna be doing tonight? I think they're going to be watching in large numbers. But are they going to be excited about it? Are they routing forward today really know what they want to see. That gave you the couple of inactives, which some of which are we surprised? One of which acted give you He ran down the list of inactives at the Eagles have in their midst and a whole bunch of their better players, One of which I was surprised by Mile Sanders. I'm pretty damn sure Miles Sanderson and hurt. Ah, I follow Eagle News all week long, and I don't remember anybody mentioned in Mile Sanders of missing time and practice. No, they just decided to basically make him a healthy scratch. The other one is Carson went is a healthy scratch for tonight's game. He is not going to get into the game. If something happens to jail, er two is going to be the starting quarterback. Of course, Nate sudden. Feld has been activated as the backup quarterback tonight for the Philadelphia Eagles, which Had said huge After Jalen hurts his first stark. He's had three starts. Now. He came in at the end of the game prior to the change. It's starting quarterbacks. I I don't think it was after he came in. And replaced went. I think it was a week after that. I wish I could tell you when I should be able to tell you for your help. Shame on me for that, But I mentioned the fact that if the Eagles were eliminated Before the final game of the season, which is exactly what happened that the Eagles might be Would be well advised, to least in this man's opinion. Actually put Carson Wentz back into a game and not for the reason that you might think it is because what do you guys gonna do it? The quarterback position is very much to be determined. Everyone's got their speculation as to how it would bet be served going forward. I think the Eagles really need to move on from Carson Wentz, specifically of Doug Peterson's going to stick around, and that was a report in several different outlet over the past 24 hours that Peterson is definitely coming back. Their defensive coordinator, is Potentially retiring. He's going to step away from football for it least a year, Jim Schwartz said. This is the last game. He's going to coaches, D C for the Eagles, and then he will decide what he wants to do with the rest of his career during the next year, or it could be during the next couple of weeks. If somebody was over my head coaching position, I guarantee he's gonna flip flop on that whole retirement thing. Um, but I think he wants to be able to have the flexibility and not be under contract to be the defensive coordinator of the Eagles. Um, just speculation but my thought on Carson Wentz Wasps The day should get him back into a game so that you can have a good game and maybe could enhance his trade possibilities during the off season, because that's what I think the Eagles should do. It's going to be ugly. It's going to be a 30. Some odd million dollar dead, Kai cap it even if they trade him. It's like a 60 million dead cop, cap it if they cut him, so they're not gonna cut him. So they have to find someone who's willing to trade for him. I don't know exactly what the price would be you off the awful season in the ad, but I'm assured by some NFL experts there's always one That is willing to take that kind of chance. Okay? I hope that's the case. I'd like to see cards wins, Go back down there and take one more shot. If that is the case and play, it is not happening. I was woefully wrong on that speculation, and I knew at the time that I said it that I was trying to push a rock a pill doing so well. Iraq has just rolled all over me. They're not even dressing him tonight. He's not playing it off for the Philadelphia Eagles. Hey, I've seen lesser squads come out of nowhere and upset teams. We don't know what watch the washing of football teams got left in the tank. We know Alex Smith is going to give it a go. But does it mean he's going to be able to play all? Uh, poor quarters tonight? I have no idea if that's the case. But with the season online no one should be surprised that Alex Smith, who fought back from not only a potential career ending injury But a life ending injury only made it back to the National Football League. And he is actually one games with Washington football team this year, and he needs to win one more to get them into the playoffs at seven and nine. Yes, it'll be an ugly playoff entry by below 500 playoff entry, but at least that will be a playoff entry if he can find a way to win this game. Get the whole for the Washington football team, A k a formerly known as the Redskins, um, that they are win and they're in lose and they go home. And that is always a compelling reason to watch. But there were other better games and specifically, now that we know I said this all week leading up to today after they made the announcement that the game they were flexing in the Sunday night football was the Eagles and the Washington football team. I just didn't get it. I didn't understand it. I debated it with people on the air and will continue to do so tonight. It just didn't make sense to me. There are better get Oh, do you want me to go through games that proved Be better games just by the way that they played themselves out. Um, the Giants and Cowboys game was an exciting game. The Giants ended up winning. There was a debatable play at the end of the game look like a pass to Pettus actually hit the ground before it was judged to be a catch in the port quarter. The Cowboys did not challenge it. Despite the fact that on TV down Fox, they had several replace, which showed that it probably would have been overturned. They don't giant's gonna feel go out of it. They go by four. Cowboys need a touchdown in the end, rather than a field goal to win in the last two minutes when they drove in the Giants. Dori couldn't convert. So the Giants of the team what, at least the possibility of getting into the playoffs, depending on what watching them does tonight? That would have been a better game to show. Um, the Packers and the Bears actually was competitive. Give the bear's credit. They hung tough until the fourth quarter. Aaron Rodgers got his, uh Four touchdown pass at that time to blow the game open, But it was hanging in the balance..
