"By to hang out with us. They're here. Thanks to the Goodyear hardline. Can we talk about football without friend Bill Connolly does a great job as an ESPN college football writer hit him on Twitter. ESPN underscore Bill C and Bill I'm going to start with Clemson. The only scored three points and planted claims of fans were thinking we might need a new quarterback after only week one when they lost to Georgia over the weekend, but realistically How worried should Clemson fans be about this team, especially when it comes to the offense? I mean Georgia's defense that they just face has been the best in college football the last two years, and the defense that we saw on Saturday night was better than either one of those, So I'll be worried about constant when they struggle against like a mortal defense. But that was the best you could look at to see until like if they still make the college football playoff. That's the next time you'll see a defense that we're close to that so Now they can kind of step back and reassess and actually Move the football in the coming weeks and we'll see how they look after their, you know, shaking some kinks out here. Well, I know there's a lot of excitement when Chip Kelly arrived on campus at U C L A but three losing seasons. Now there, too, and l have a win over a ranked team after beating LSU this weekend are Chip Kelly's U C. L. A Bruins for Real. I mean, they're real enough to challenge in the Pac 12. They almost were last year. They went three and four and three a lot. Since we're down to the wire, one score kind of games. They were very, very close to having a lovely if brief 2020 season and then returned to everybody this year and so and then added backstabbing, among others, so They just have dude this year. They haven't had this many just pure playmakers in a while, But this is the mean team. They could run the schemes that chip Kelly wants to run and I don't feel the petrol started absolutely loaded. Us still could be a top 15 team. Arizona State's really, really fast. Utah continues to be Utah exactly in Utah every year. It's really, really fun, right? But I don't get why you feel that would be a very big part of that race bill staying with that game on the other side when it comes to L s U, because it's one thing to lose on the road and L s u fans. They had bitter beer face after losing that ball given traveling all that way to see their team lose the coach at Orgeron gotten somebody to my sissy blue uniforms, whether you come to U C l A How much of a hot seat could Ed Orgeron beyond now? Down at Ellis here? Yeah. Don't insult that boy. That's just a good Those are gorgeous. Uh, those uniforms down there. Video had a difference of a fashion opinion. I'm just putting it out there, You know, I mean, it's We should have been more or less certain I guess about l s u. I understand why they were preseason ranked in the teens. But wild. Another top five run with top five talent was on the table this year. The exact opposite was too. They were lucky to go five and five last year, and we know all the things that went wrong for them. With Michael Miles Brennan's injury. Derek Stingley junior was never 100%. But they had a lot to prove this year and didn't prove all that much. We know. Okay. Sean Bouquet still is incredible and will continue to be Mac Johnson, the wild card and they all have and the defense just They didn't. They don't defending the run last year, they struck defending the run on Saturday night. They've got a lot to improve upon it. I dont know that its guarantee that they're going to do it. We'll see. Well, I think my favorite story from over the weekend, which Mackenzie Milton getting in the game and then playing well in leading, You know, Florida State's from down 10 to force overtime. Ultimately, Notre Dame still ends up winning, but from Mackenzie Milton and again for those who don't know, 34 months removed from a tough injury that nearly forced the amputation of his right leg. That's when he was at UCF he transfers over to Florida State plays in this game. Is this more than just a good story On one night is Mackenzie Milton, potentially the long term starter now at F. Su But it's really I mean, Jordan. Travis is such a playmaker like I would assume they're going to try to figure out of Oprah him. Regardless, He also 33 picks for sex, so he's very, very much all or nothing. But what we saw from McKinsey Melton, other than you know, all of us collectively holding our breath. Every single time he turned to run with the ball was He's a really good quarterback. He would have been a Heisman favorite the year after he you know, after his injury if he hadn't gotten hurt like this is he's a very, very smart quarterback. That shovel pass was fantastic. He's just he's really good. And if he really is running confidently if it's not in his head every time he takes a step, what happened to his leg like like it was for all of us watching. And I mean, he might just be the better quarterback than Jordan. Travis and we'll see him A good portion of this green stuff by Bill Connolly does a great job to ESPN College football writer hit him on Twitter. ESPN underscore Bill C. Joining Freddy come in the game nights on Freddie and Fitz Simmons on ESPN radio. How.

"The last seven years and they are breaking into young first time coordinators. Twenty one thousand nine hundred twenty eighteen are out wires. This feels like. Ooh this stinks. This feels like gene chizik two point. Oh dan i'll come on. Ooh everybody's so quick to compare a situation too gene chizik or man. Who's the other coach. Who's the oh god. now. I'm blanking on his name. The miami coach. Who followed butch davis. Who was out after a few years. Just couldn't keep larry. Larry larry coker everybody's very quick next coker interesting interesting common ground. Though here neither gene chizik. Nor at orsha. Ron have any sideburns. Is that true. At origins are as short as physics. I believe now gene sideburns. Which isn't really was it was up. I level coach owes sideburns situation. It's not it's it's similar not as pronounced. Maybe that's a head shape thing but it's similar. You're right so for what it's worth in ohio battle royale. I take co over gene. Hey no doubt about it Sideburns are comparable and clearly. We're at a stage. Now with lsu football in the wake of the joe burrow era in the wake of joe brady era in the wake of twenty twenty and the uncertainty where you know there is some question around. Where where's this thing headed. I think recruiting is still been strong. I think there's a lot of reason to be optimistic. It feels like they started to pull it together down the stretch last season with match johnson in their a quarterback but Jean she's two point. Oh dan that is that cuts to the bone right. It does gene chizik. Made some pretty bad hires after losing gus malzahn and took the offense and a great place but recruited pretty. Well the problem with that comparison is quickly made the change and he is not the greatest track record of finding coaches on either side of the ball coordinators on either side of the ball that just weren't fits for a ten win season and even though matt canada's offense at lsu had its moments. It wasn't a fit. Without ron and then following joe brady was going to be pretty impossible but the combination of a newish looking offense. Wasn't that new. Look but it was. You know there were there. Were new ideas and that offense and quarterback injuries and rawness to the quarterback position. I thought miles brennan was pretty good. Defense was a nightmare against mississippi state to open the year so if the defense comes back to anywhere near where it should be given the talent level and given the schedule this year. I mean you can stop me. When i get to a quarterback. That legitimately scares you. Cla macneice central michigan. I think that's that's kind of scary just because mcelwain is doing a pretty good job there. But i'm not worried. It's lsu auburn kentucky. Florida ole miss. Yeah that's a quarterback that scare you corral. And it's on the road. We'll see about bryce young quarterback situation tuscaloosa but we don't know yet. Arkansas monroe am so right now. The the number of proven scary quarterbacks analysis schedule isn't all that high right now and i think there's just a general assumption that the mistakes given everything that goes into the program and given the the guys that they got recommendations from regarding these new coordinators. I think there's just this assumption that the injury luck going to bounce back derek. Singley was dealing with some pretty. He was hospitalized the night before that mississippi state game like there were key dudes who were dealing with some really serious stuff so i think there is just that assumption that even if lsu traditionally is not winning ten eleven games a year that given where they are as compared to the changes and newness of the rest of the that lsu in a pretty good spot. They've got one of the best receivers in the country to main queue shampoo. And i think there's opportunity there for a poor man's twenty nineteen is at nine wins is i don't know but i think we're gonna see notes of it on both sides of the ball and we know dave rant is an incredible defensive coordinator and you know matching. What he was able to do at lsu is going to be very difficult by. It's a really nice starting point considering the too deep on that defense so i don't think the same mistakes we made on defense and i think they will be healthier on offense which i think leads to a certain degree of optimism. I thought we had a blanket policy on the show. That whenever you said verandas name you had. You had to use the lego batman voice for thank you. Look there is some. I think real discussion to be had around where. Lsu goes from here Remember what the conversation was going into that incredible once in a generation season that they had where they ran the table and won the championship and joe burrow went onto the heisman trophy and the first overall draft pick. You remember what the conversation was going into that season. The conversation was we got to fix this offense and the conversation was maybe joe brady and right perhaps doors. Ron is self aware enough as a coach to realize the air in his ways the flaws of the system. And he's going to go out and he's gonna try and get better on offense now. That worked beautifully. Obviously but it's a bit of a cry wolf situation because what are we hear every august from every camp of this guy. This guy succeeded at the manning passing academy. Thank you this this is there. Were really going to open it up this right. That's why we joke about new coordinators. New strength coaches aggressive attacking mentality right. So it's it's really hard to parse you know if you can get practice reports behind the scenes and not necessarily writer saying the sort of just printing what coaches are saying without offering. You know better sourcing. It's really hard to believe what is actually true. And what's not until the live bullets. Start flying that's leonard percent the case and that's my point here with oram so we. We definitely caught lightning in a bottle. The year with joe burrow when they want everything and they were all world everything and they were incredible once in a generation. No doubt about it going to be no doubt about it. It's going to play with timbo but right but much the way the next guy after sabin has a incredible impossible act to follow. I feel like we're kinda in that territory. Now with lsu how do you build upon that once in a generation season they've got some momentum from it but it's tough act to follow and i fear for adores her on that no matter how well they do if they don't live up to that billing it's gonna leave fans under wealthed because it's so close in the rear view mirror so i don't know like i think there is a real likelihood that there's a solid bounce back from some uncertainty year ago but it's just not enough to appease the fan base and that's what i worry about. I root for root for coach. Oh but i feel like that as a probability at this point just given how high the heights were a couple of seasons ago. Yeah i mean it's it's basically we're gonna come down if there's not a special situation at quarterback with lsu we're going to be having similar conversations as to what we had in two thousand thirteen fourteen. Whatever where it's how long can they go nine and three and keep coach artists artists. Okay how long can they keep. How long can they keep going nine and three and you know that might become the question or i mean until they get to bam. All of those games on paper are winnable and then after bama it's arkansas at home monroe at home am at home now. Okay let's go to kristoff for our purposes here. Can we just assume it is at harris's character in the truman show always. That's where i was going with it. The backwards beret. Let's just assume it's the same kristoff he says next year..

"Now joins me a guy back in two thousand eight founder. walk ons It was at first of fun bar restaurant right across the street and tiger stadium. He played hoops at lsu. And you're like skies awesome. And now he's He's a whole lot more than that. He is a businessman. He is on the move is. He's putting together franchises. Now and it's it's really probably one of the fastest growing restaurant brands in the country. Man and i'm really proud of yet. So i want to ask you about your side of this because as soon as the. Nfl stuff happened. You sent me a note. Hey we got staying in. I'm like okay. So how does this go from. Somebody who looked the lsu community means everything to you. You've been very involved. Donations tickets the whole deal. I mean i don't know what your booster level is or any of that stuff. We never really talked about that kind of thing. But how how does that change for you as a business owner and looking at this as an opportunity because i guess the simplest question would be. Is it just something you feel you need to do is nell. Lsu guy or is this something with your branding or if you play this right you feel like there's a real return for the investment for a company. Yes i mean first of all. Thanks for having me brother appreciate it. Thanks for the kind words but yeah it looks. It's it's crazy because nobody knows. I think that's that's the crazy thing for us. We wanted to have a bigger name on day. One right in in having stangely here in our backyard You know we look on tiger stadium right here from our headquarters it just made sense just from a national play for us the way we look at it as the way we do our regular advertising. We have a national play. You know one. We're we're going our restaurants Were eleven states now. So maybe national media dollars that we spend that we have local And for him being in our backyard and potentially heisman candidate You know and and somewhat of a household name as far as college athletes. It was a good clay for us. from a branding standpoint and of course being an lsu guy that helped but I think more importantly it was just for the connection ear in in he being An you talked to mackenzie as match point It was just an easy play for both of us. are play. Moving forward is to really capitalize on walks to be honest with you And and and really get the stories of these kids That's we're excited about. Because look and i'm sure you've talked about this already. I think there's probably the top what one to three percent of the kids that are going to be big dollars In in a really gonna be marketable. But i think more importantly It's these kids that have great stories as underdog stories that we kinda celebrate here in our company I think it's going to be a good play for us And and then you know speaking internally here as we grow throughout the country We're excited about having these kids that you know have twenty twenty five thousand followers. Maybe so we just opened in tuscaloosa last month You know less less. Backtrack say we'd open two years ago. And nause heirs to say this was. This was available. You know a kid. With twenty twenty five maybe thirty thousand followers I'd say eighty percent of those followers are the kids that we won't working with us. And so it's gonna be really big us as far as hiring you know. We spent a lot of dollars Entering new markets as far as brand awareness and just You know getting that word out that. Hey we're coming into town. We need two hundred. Plus a new employees are new teammates to join our team and so these kids that have those followings there on in those college towns or in those communities that will be entering is gonna be a great place for us so it's all over the board. That's what's the crazy thing like it was. It's almost like okay here you know. And and everybody's like i will go. We're gonna do something and you know raising cane's here in town they're based in baton rouge through other you know they got miles. Brennan really quick. We got strongly and You know of course. You say we're barstools on this as far as the the the barstool athletes. And that's our play. You know we wanna do probably an athlete. A week will sign an athlete. A week up Throughout the year. So we want may. Maybe it's too you know it's between fifty or a hundred and we'd love them be walkouts In in really kind of It just goes with our brand goes with it with our alignment you know. And and and having to where we can tell their story and It'll work for them as far as their own brand and definitely our brand. And that's that's your story to You know the saying goes. Everybody needs a little playing time. Which is you know when you think about it as as aligned for walk on's it's great. It's brilliant. it's it's perfect line. It's funny and it's kind of your story too. I mean how much did you. I don't even know how much you played at. Lsu that you tell yourself though it was like that. I usually stop people when they introduced. And they say yeah he played at lsu plays a very strong work I think i got seven minutes my senior year. It was it was either up thirty or down thirty brother. It wasn't in the heat. It's day but you know that's what we celebrate. It really is. I mean it's the underdog story. I mean everyone's got an underdog story. I don't care where you are in life where you're from. What your background is. It's at some point. You are an underdog right either. You got passed up for team or job or maybe not part of a social group and so that's kind of what we celebrate in internally in our company and we attract great teammates that way and and Honestly our guests love it too. Because i think they can they can all relate to it and so it's You know rudy is is a big friend of rob ran. Done a whole lot with us and you know. Of course. he's the ultimate underdog story right the ultimate walk on. But it's it's fun man. You know like our vision is to be more than a restaurant. Really inspire lifestyle than abrasive. That underdog mindset all upset. I mean why do we get excited when the fifteen seats being the two seat morsch mads as because of that underdog in because we all feel like we've been there at some point so we played that it's very authentic for us. I think denial has as a great opportunity for us. And for the athletes out there. That is kind of want to tell their store. I don't know all the state laws. Which i know shaq shoe on what this is. I don't know that anybody knows what they are even a weekend as i've read some of the stuff out of florida in in the structure. That's there i mean. Does anyone really know what is going on or was it just. Hey you know look. We're walk on's we have. You had to do something. You're across the street so the sting thing made sense but as you told me like your pivot is kind of more along the brand side of this so i'm not trying to get you or anybody in trouble here but is it safe to say it's just kinda like all right. What are we allowed to do. I guess we'll just do that. And then we'll see what happens. I don't know. Yeah i mean. Honestly that's what the it seems so crazy but that's how it is right now. We're doing as much research as can't we're not gonna get ourselves in trouble but the universities i know they're trying to educate kids as much as they can You know the kids are trying to figure out. Okay first of all. What can i get paid. How much can i get paid. I mean the taxes and all you can about imagine stuff the.

"You know who's going to be a great match and quarterback this year dustin chrome and say he's very good he. He had remember that game. That i think can stay for who they played. There was only six. Mack games a share. Only four tuesdays. I think dustin crumbs team put up like seventy six on some random night and the last guy underrated which i just. I almost put this guy on air. Because he got injured last year he only played four even played me snaps at all but i can't believe he's still there. You realize max. Borghese still at washington state. Have i brought him up to episodes ago. Max bogey rushed for fourteen yards. Two years ago. Didn't play last year and he's still washington state's running back max. Bourgie i feel like as exists has existed in three different types of mine. Max is somebody that like had ten carries for ninety five yards last year. But max board is somebody that would have been on these last years. Like all american all and he didn't play and people have forgotten about him. You know he's there. Who do you think's gonna start at quarterback for lsu. I think it'll be the mississippi miles brennan. Do you think it'll be brad johnson skit. No i think it's i think miles brandon. We got on him a little bit too much at the beginning season then. He got injured but he was kind of. Turn it around a little bit. I mean he put up forty five against missouri. Lsu fans will not admit it but they wanted to blame the quarterback a they. They lost a mistake. Forty four thirty four. They scored forty five against missouri. Like they were scoring points. Lsu's defense was historically garbage last year. Remember when derek stanley was like the second coming of jesus. I don't know maybe it was just a weird season for him but he he missed a couple of games again and then he just was kind of average. But i'm sure he's still going to be high staffer. You guys rogers. He'll start at first okay. I think you'll probably get beat eventually. But but yeah so god. I'm just these magazines man. I love them so much underrated over the last twenty years. I'm gonna throw some names at you. And i want you to tell me if you think they were underrated. Now just you tower you all jordan mathews vanderbilt jordan. Happy is one of the all-time receivers in the i think. All time receptions leader in the the top to vanderbilt is earl bennett and jordan mathews. That's just crazy. He was incredible vanderbilt. Nobody ever talked about it. Because i think mike evans unrated am because it was johnny johnny johnny but mike evans best player on the team. Johnny was throwing up some balls during his time. That only would have been caught by mike evans. And maybe who. Jones or calvin johnson to two players at the same time in texas colleges that that almost won national titles. We don't talk about anymore but looking back it is crazy. How underrated bryce petty at baylor and trevan boykin at or they were legitimate. Were five six in the playoff. Tcu has arrived to this day. I know ohio state won national title. Tcu as gripe to this day it should have been in the almost forty two three in the ballgame driven boykin and bryce petty just in the middle of that decade dominant quarterbacks. And we don't talk about an all anymore. bryce yeah. Bryce petty ended up going to the jets and was not very good. So i kinda messes with my memory a little bit but those baylor. Tcu probably what was that year two thousand fourteen when they didn't get in. Yeah it was a shame. Neither of them got in. And then how about andre williams for underrated name boston college. This guy ran for twenty two hundred yards one year. He and then right after him came austin dillon's which kind like made us forget about hundred but he was someone that whenever he got the ball just looked like he was going to get not touchdown but fifteen yards kevin cobb university of houston case. Keenum come along and set a whole bunch of records. Houston after but kevin cop up ungodly numbers at houston. He did two thousand one hundred two thousand three. He was incredible and then he came in great rolls back up for the eagles. Here and there taj boyd. Clemson another jets quarterback. Because does shawn watson happened because trevor lawrence happened. We forget that the guy that started this whole quarterback ronan clemson and got him close to the national title. Level was ties boyd close. And he had the andrea hopkins sammy watkins head and martinez so he had he had all those players and but they had a great offense. I mean put numbers ties. Boy was fantastic. But we don't we talk about and quarterbacks you mentioned him ever and the last guy i think. This is the most underrated player of the last twenty years. And you as a non power. Five guys are just going to. Are you going to like this rookie team. Kato had marshall. You realize one hundred thirty one touchdowns which would when he left was four. All time he was there he realized he had the tenth most yards all time when he left college routine. Kato put up monster numbers. And nobody i. If i say we're keen kato to two standard non like super passionate football fans nominee people are gonna say. Oh yeah the guy from marshall. Another guy underrated toby gerhart very underrated stanford stanford has the most ever most ever second place finishes in heisman and five of them have happened the last fifteen years andrew twice twice dare heart-to-heart did price love. Yeah christian mccaffrey. Yeah have been second in the heisman so so so much and you think white stand for running backs you think christian mccaffrey. You don't think toby gerhart I'm just looking at some ties. Boyd's up there is dexter emma cluster. Doesn't get brought up. I know that's fine. We're not gonna bring up. Oh who was the backup running back on usc behind lingala lyndale white. Yeah i was running back. Reggie bush or better high highlight machine. But then they'll have more rushing yards their their sophomore seasons than reggie bush. Anyway the five best. Then we'll get to the tweet. The five best college football days of the summer. Are you ready. Yes number five. This might just be a day. I've always said this. But i don't think anybody else does it. It's called youtube day the day. I don't really have anything to do. i'm not busy. I'll just sit on the couch. Or i'll sit in my office at work and i will just fire up youtube videos off. Fire up dak prescott fire. Vince young highlights youtube day. Where i get myself ready for the season just watching every single college. Football highlight tape on youtube. Am i the only one that does that. Yeah no no those. It's not you can't be because those high videos millions and the moment where they're initially posted. No no the greatest things. You'll you'll sometimes look up a game from two thousand eleven. We'll have three hundred fifty nine three hundred.

"We welcome in chris during Who gives us her. Quite a look ahead to tomorrow's game. Chris in most years florida hosting lsu of the sec this week. It's been pretty quiet. I am curious as you know those two teams so well especially from florida side What what are they thinking as they get one of their bitter rivals in a bitter rival that they are a prohibitive favorite. It is weird. Isn't it paula. Me and thinking back to win. This game was originally scheduled. I thought most lsu people felt like we're gonna get a chance to play later in the year we'll get healthier. We'll get miles brennan back. We'll be in better position. And i would argue that. They're actually in a worse position now than when they were originally scheduled in october. So i it's kind of a weird dynamic with a lotta florida. Fans looking forward to sec. Championship game next weekend for me. This is all about. Florida has nothing to do with their opponent. Lsu it's about getting right offensively full full-fledged dress rehearsal right costumes everything. Let's go for what we're gonna do next week. I i honestly been kind of disappointed with florida's offensive performance. The last three weeks dating back to the vanderbilt came. Because they just look inconsistent. They look like they walk through a haze periods of time. They look like they're not executing and part of it's their own fault for looking so good against arkansas in the second half and missouri against georgia. We set the bar pretty high for them but focused level has not been there for a full sixty minutes. I want to see all fence. Get back to executing at the level. They were early in the year defensively. Let's get some things shored up. Let's figure out how to keep from giving up these long passing plays. Let's get generate some more pressure on the quarterback. Let's be able to to penetrate and stop the run something. I thought they did. Well against tennessee last week but The thing i'm gonna keep my paul. What are the numbers for. Kyle trask because obviously this is a game as you said against a A bitter rival one. That beat florida by fourteen. Last year florida's got a chance to return the favor but they also have a chance to outduel in back to back weeks what mack jones get did against the very same defense. And don't think that winning the heisman trophy is not something that dan mullen really wants. For contrast and something that will help his program significantly going forward in on that subject. How do you compare. Kyle trash to meg jones. And that's really his main competition now and that we know we know what had next two weeks especially next week but what what what what separates college trask. If anything well first of all. I love both of these guys you know as a former receiver. I love the the accuracy. I love the the the way they re defenses and get the ball to the right guy. On what the defense is dictating But i would go back and say kyle. Traffic is probably had a tougher. Time than what mack jones at and. That's not taking anything away. From mac ios but look at how. Good this offense of line is for alabama. Look at how well they've run the football over the last six games or so look at what. Najji harris has done. Devante smith the reason why iraq jones's numbers look so good on the deep passes over twenty yards and no disrespect. Mac has been really accurate. But when you're throwing a guy that's five yards behind the nearest defender. It makes it a little bit easier. So again i think without the run game florida certainly not able to run the football very well. I don't think they're offensive. Line is the most consistent So i think the load that kyle. Trask bears a little bit harder to to carry them. What jones does now with that being said. Look at the weapons of florida has i. I don't think i've ever been able to say at least in recent years. That florida has more receiving weapons around their quarterback than what alabama does. They've been absolutely loaded but Looking at the way that that not only kind of is utilized trayvon. Grimes justin shorter. All those receivers. Jacob copeland has come on as well Forgetting about tony. Who might be one of the biggest Factor mismatch guys in the sec. Right now but the way. They use the running backs as well. That was something that we saw against georgia so a lot of different guys. That are helping. Kyle trask out. But i think with the advantage that alabama has on the offensive line and that run game to complement the throws down the field. I think kyle may have a little bit more of a impressive Season just because of how much he's had to do himself chris. Couple of games. I want to ask you about one. Particular auburn at mississippi state mississippi state has been up and down we. We've been through that conversation. But i'm really curious about auburn. Because they've had some really good moments this year and then some clunkers especially lately. I know what you're doing here paul. You love it. When i go off on auburn and it's been up and down year with them right early in the season. I was really down on him. I was starting to get A little bit more positive with the way they were able to run the run the football figuring out who they were with take bixby and that offensive line and then they got hit with a bunch of injuries up front Bixby was was banged up.

South Carolina vs. LSU Football Preview

"Certainly one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the day tomorrow night in Baton Rouge between South Carolina and Lsu. Castaneda joining us from down there Quin. Thank you very very much. Appreciate the time, and it looks like a weather. Is An issue for what's going on down there right now? Well, just for the moment I'm across the street Tiger Stadium's to my left in their facility straight across the street I'm about to record up and advancer for tomorrow and had a little lightening. got. Dark severe winds and pouring but you can see the nicer weather up on the horizon. So things should be back to normal about ten minutes. We'll good because. That is a place that doesn't need Louisiana does not need any more bad weather. Quinn let's talk a little bit before we get to the game just about your job this year it's different I'm sure. A lot of zoom calls a lot of unusual situations caused by the pandemic. How would you describe the the obvious difference between this and every other year you've been on the sidelines for ESPN and ABC. Well, it's taken a lot of the fun out of it taken a lot of the things that I enjoyed get on campus to meet with the coaches to talk to the strength coaches just to get a vibe for how that team's doing and you learn so much whether it's Roman down the hallway and talking to a tight ends coach or bumping into a recruiting intern about video, they just paint so so that. Part of my investigation is is far less exciting. This year there's no social aspects in terms of our TV crew, our TV team so it's just zooms and when I'm on the road I'm the only one here are our broadcast crew will will broadcast this from Bristol. I'm the only one here. So I kind of treat this like I'm a spy, I don't touch anything I talked to strangers and I couldn't. quit. There's always a challenge on the sidelines especially. When there is weather but is it any or how different is it i? Guess I'm trying to ask dealing with the crew. Fifteen hundred miles away or maybe longer or farther right upstairs nothing you can see them but you at least know that they were seeing the same thing you're seeing. Yeah there's a little bit of a time delay in the audio so it can be anywhere from two seconds four seconds. So I've been on a crew with Jason Bonetti and Rod Gilmore. The last couple years Mike spent hot the whole game this year I've changed crews almost every week, and because we're doing it remotely. They can't have my mic on because we'd be talking over each other. So we do it old school and I'll talk to the producer I talked back and say, Hey, after the third down, play I wanNA talk about upon her coming out for hey, if they make a first down here I want to talk about how they're tight ends doing a great job so. Do it old school and go through the go through the producer in the in the remote truck. In order in order to get on air whereas in the past I could just talk and we were seamless. Clean on the sidelines I mean to say the least there are restrictions what are they and how much do you have to tiptoe around? It's really not bad. I mean we won I. Did a game not they actually made me call the game from the stands in the front row was good seat but I really couldn't get a feel for what was going on on the benches since then they've just widened appalled widen areas it's actually easier now because there's less hangers on, there's less alums, there's less NFL scouts until the sidelines are vacant and it makes my job a lot easier. I also feel pretty secure in that the players and coaches have all been tested recently as recently as Friday or Saturday morning. So I, feel good in that regard So it's actually almost easier less fans less crowds more space. Speaking of testing. How often do you have to be tested? we test once a week it's either an ad home test, and then you mail it in test results come back in about thirty six hours or it's an onsite tasks on a Thursday afternoon then you quarantine. And then Friday, they released you so so far knock on wood six for six negative tests. That would be Kinda. Nerve wracking you show up at a game and you have to sweat it out and you hope you don't get a a Nick Sabin positive. Let's talk about the game because. It's a really interesting game. Let's start with South Carolina just your. As I know you do gather as much information as you can you probably would like to. Be Able to gather more in person but. Your impressions of what you've seen to them and and what you expect. Well they beat Auburn as you know, and they got the three turnovers and converted those in touchdowns. My issue was South Carolina's they're operating an offense with very limited downfield wide receiver threats shy Smith is a natural slot receiver. Colin Hill is is working Mike, Lobos offense efficiently and their offensive line in running backs or carrying the day. Okay. That's with this team is I'm not sure they're ever going to be a high scoring team defensively they're really good corners who can shut you down they add to the box so. I think South Carolina given that Lsu has a freshman quarterback. I'm leaning towards them having some success defensively in this ball game. So I kinda like Carolina's ability to negate lsu with a freshman quarterback but Carolina's physical they're tough. They're not nothing flashy about him and I think big plays are hard for them I. Think they have to manufacture find ways to manufacturer big plays but I think this team is definitely moving in the right direction I. Think they've improved each week. And the other side of that you alluded to the quarterback situation team that has struggled mightily on defense quarterback play has been pretty good I. Know I know it's impossible to gauge because we don't really have a lot of information but. What have you what have you been able to learn about where they are right now? Yet, teach gets the start a freshman Ponchatoula high school. He's gigantic six, six, two, hundred and forty two pounds nets down from to sixty s a big toll righty and you watch his high school tapes just drops in the pocket and he conflict the ball and it goes forty yards without him even trying he seems like he's calm. He's Louisiana product of this dream for him the ADRENALIN will be running. Also expect to see, Max? Johnson. The son of NFL, quarterback Brad Johnson a lefty also tall but more of a dual threat and when you think about calling the game around a freshman quarterback making his first start, you know any kind of run game would be beneficial and to put the quarterback in successful positions. Early in the game, get him hit but but get a couple first downs give him some easy throws and I think that'll be on the mind of lsu going to be a little more conservative game plan I'd. Imagine. You know he's got targets downfield terrace Marshall their running game I thought was anemic Missouri game that was the most disappointing part of the game in my eyes Missouri was without three defensive tackles in that game and Lsu had no running game whatsoever good news for the Tigers to get Ed Ingram back at left guard. But this is an offense through the air with Miles Brennan that's been outstanding. But now you've got a new freshman quarterback. So expectations drop again, I'm seeing a little bit more of a lower scoring game here. In Clinton's you've seen them. The. Biggest used on defense. Would give. Horrible And coach today sentence embarrassing. Alignment. Very, often they're they're moving at a snap making checks that is when the coverage changes on the fly because of emotion because of formation change that has been a dismal day of given up big play after big play against Mississippi State, it was more catching and run the air raid defense was was atrocious quite honestly continued to play man defense got shredded by crossing patterns but I was at the Mizzou game and That game was defined by busts. I mean just blatant bus where I got him. No you got to I got you got him guys wide open touchdown in the running game. Their linebackers are not playing physical. They're not playing north not playing north. They're not getting to the line of scrimmage and engaging blockers to waiting for runners they're missing tackles remember the tyler beatty runs Missouri fiscally untouched broke attack Lens. Gone So. Those are the headlines here new quarterbacks for Lsu and a defense that has had no answers.

NFL Draft & Post-Spring Top 25 (without spring football)

"Why don't we turn our attention? Bruce to the players who will be back in college in. Twenty Twenty On Tuesday I released my spring top. Twenty five a little different this year because usually the reason you put it out the last week. April is that everybody's completed spring practice and we use some of the insights we've gleaned from that to update the rankings. I did the morning after title game. Obviously we did not. So why did you put it out this time? Because people love rankings? Remember the the one up morning after the national title game. We didn't yet know who was going to turn pro. We didn't get there have been head. Coaching changes that happened after that game like Matt Rule Even Baylor certainly lots and lots of coordinator changes. Transfer Portal guys I'm not saying that it drastically altered the lineup by any means. But you know there's you you have more info certainly than you did The morning after the national title game so the hardest team to rank is the one we just talked about a little while ago. Lsu because on the one hand they just had this dominant season and we know their program that recruits well so there's going to be able to reload but on the other hand fourteen guys a lot and To replace fourteen guys that were drafted. Some of those very very high draft picks most notably Joe Borough and generally speaking. I look back at some of the teams that had a huge number like that. Almost always there is a drop off. The next year might not be a severe drop off so the question is okay. I had them number five. I believe The day after the title game I dropped them to eight now. It's not like something bad happened between then and now have some you know. We didn't know who his new coordinator is going to be at that point that didn't really factor into it. I just find it hard to believe you can lose that many guys and come back the next year in win the SEC again. What surprised me a little bit? When I looked I was like wait. You drop them down. They actually like Djibril Cox's it was considered by lot of people as the top Grad transfer linebacker in the country and he ended up going there which is which is interesting to see how fit in going from North Dakota state which obviously wins national titles every year till she was just one one so I was a little surprised at okay. The probably the the one area on their defense. That was a question mark. They showed up from the time. You'd sign there but I don't disagree with you. Having them eight. I mean to me. The biggest loss is going to be jober. I mean he had the greatest quarterback anybody greatest quarterback season anybody's ever had in college football. And you know I know. Miles Brennan has a strong arm. That's about all we know right and so nine Oh yes good receivers Tamar Chase as the best receiver. He would have been the best fever in this draft. He's back but they got to replace basically three. And a half starters on the offensive line and they gotta replace Clyde. That's a lot and so to have them eighth. I don't think that's I don't think that's like eye-popping I was like. I said I was a little surprised that you you drop them Just in time from that but I think that could probably be as much relative. Yeah it wasn't because of anything that it wasn't anything that happens since January in. You're right that was a big pickup In terms of Djibril Cox Just recently that morning that it went up and I'll actually for being honest. I wrote it the day of the game. it's you just get a little distance from that and I mean it could be a very wide range of possibilities probably more than most teams in there. The ceiling in the floor is probably a pretty wide range. They wouldn't be. It wouldn't be shocking to me. If I think they're still gonNA be really good on defense. I think you would agree especially up front on the defensive line. You've got probably the best cornerback in the country extinguisher. You've got to Kobe. Steven's coming back. They should be really good still on defense. It's the Joe Borough factor. It's the offensive line. It's replacing Clyde like those are big questions but if they can answer those questions and maybe they're right back in the playoff and if they can't maybe there number eight maybe they go seven and five like there's such a wide range of possibilities with them. The thing that probably surprised me the most about your updated one was really jumped Texas. A&m High move them up seven spots. So what changed? Or what sunk into you that made you feel like I'm I'm going all in on the aggies pretty much well for one thing. I'm a big believer in bill. Connolly's rankings as you know and sometimes we default to Okay they were. They had this record last year and they returned this many stars. Therefore I'm GonNa slot them here but obviously there's more to the story in terms of how much talent do they have? And I think an last year might have had a much different record if they didn't have to play Alabama Clemson and Georgia which is just an insane insane schedule. Their record reflected Bills PRESEASON SP plus rankings. Texas is tenth I don't have them quite that high. Obviously
