This is WTOP News. 515, good morning, I'm Dan Ronan. Thanks for being with us. Do we dare be optimistic about the U .S. economy? Another piece of news gives us more proof that things are doing a little better than expected. Mark Hamrick is a senior economist and analyst for bankrate dot com. He joined WTOP Sean and Ann to talk about the nation's output in the second quarter of the year. GDP is the main measure of economic activity, and we had a better than expected showing just released. that was This is the first snapshot of this, so it's always subject to revision, but we had expansion at an annual rate of 2 .4%. The long -term trend in this country is below that, not so only did we exceed expectations, but we're really sort of resisting the many fears that people had have about a recession here. Mark what's behind the increase? Primarily it was business investment in equipment and buildings, a rise in inventories. Consumers were spending, but not as much as they did in the first three months of the year, but all taken together, obviously a better showing. Now are all parts of the economy sharing in the good news? No, but I think that we have enough of a positive economic activity here to obviously keep this boat above water, and I think that really is the key. We obviously have had some areas that have underperformed, beginning with the downturn in the technology sector, and of course we've now emerged into a bull market and the stock market. Manufacturing has been somewhat weak, obviously the housing market has been weak but has stabilized of late. Mark is this the time that we can credibly talk about the ability of a soft landing after all these recent interest rate increases? Well between the commentary coming from Federal Reserve Chairman said that even Fed staff is backing off of a prediction of a recession this year. He hasn't believed we would have one and himself now better than expected economic data which sort of puts us on higher ground with respect to the economy there is just better momentum. The job market really is not substantially weakened at all obviously the unemployment rate up two tenths of one percent from the low and hiring is slowing and that is the outlook that will continue to see that but the tremendously negative impacts of a downturn for example in lending have not been seen after the bank failures earlier this year but we are seeing less demand for lending and less lending itself and so that could do some of the federal reserves tightening for it and that really is the current situation. This proxy for layoffs coming in at the lowest level since February decline of seven thousand to two hundred twenty one thousand even the total number of people who are receiving jobless assistance came in lower. Mark Hamrick, Senior Economic Analyst at Bankrate .com A quick look at the top stories we're working on at WTO. The cleanup is underway in our area after a violent weather that rolled through the area Saturday afternoon and evening. One wind gust in northwest DC reached 84 miles hour. per Power outages continue for more than twenty five thousand PEPCO customers, twenty eight thousand Dominion customers, eighty eight hundred BG &E customers and over fifteen thousand SEMECO customers. "On WTOP on this final day of June of 2023, a getaway day for the holiday 75 with a lot of severe weather. Good afternoon, I'm Shawn Anderson. And I'm Nick Ionelli. The top local story we're following this hour is the weather. We do have some severe storms in the area with a severe thunderstorm warning effect in for parts of Maryland. Let's get the latest on that with WTOP meteorologist Mike Stenniford. Mike what do we need to know right now? Right now a severe thunderstorm wind goes up to 60 miles hour. an Stretches from Catonsville to Lansdowne to right around the Brooklyn Park area moving off the northeast at around 15 miles an hour is going to track right over the city of Baltimore over the next 15 to 20 minutes. This is part of a large thunderstorm complex that stretches southward all the way down into the eastern portions of the district watching closely very the Route 50 corridor. It's raining very heavily right now across the beltway right where it runs into Route 50, the intersection there, and we're about to see a thunderstorm cell merger right over the city of Bowie. So we may some see very some heavy rain and some very high winds along the entire Route 50 corridor and eventually this band of strong thunderstorms going is to move right down the Bay Bridge too, so do watch out for the possibility of some restrictions there with some high winds, very rain, heavy and possibly some hail over the next 30 to 45 minutes. Behind this though fairly quiet, still going to be some showers and storms, but the risk for severe weather will come to an end probably by around six o 'clock this evening. I'll be back in just a couple minutes with your complete forecast. Alright thanks so much Mike Ganar, Dave Dildine is in the Traffic Center watching how it's going to affect our holiday getaway. Now on the topic of weather, more hazy days could be in our future. You remember all the haze forecast we we had this week and it's not just wildfires to blame. To experience that red and purple is definitely an eye National -opener. Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Witt says wildfire smoke could mean more days of caution to come. We may see additional days where we'll see more frequent not just orange but also red as well hopefully He says hazy conditions are already more common in the heart of summer but smoke and dry conditions in the DMV are exacerbating the effects. We've been several inches below normal in terms of rainfall. At least in the next couple of days he says there will be some going to be a problem relief. We're going to get showers and storms and it's going to help wash it down a little bit. Another major Your story we're following today is the Supreme Court's decision to strike down President Biden's student loan relief plan. The sharply divided

"That's why no longer random crap And that was actually one of them was like was had he ever been to a baseball game. I thought they made it up like there's no way so i've looked up several just to growing up just over the course of my life just to verify to reinforce that. Make sure it's not some mandela affect a but that's bonkers absolutely bonkers all right last thing here real quick before we go to a break and then get to more Let's go with outlets. Quinn has another one. I think is really interesting. It'd be a good one to go into a break to give some perspective here How many pounds of force is that. When you get hit by ninety mile per hour fastball. like what's the equivalent is it like. Economy gregor left hook or more. So this is one. We did a lot of working it out. We we spent a lot of time. Yes oh it's been months we. It has been months because this is not a simple question. Not even a little bit. So we spent a whole lot of time. Googling gills pounds of force. All kinds of fun things. Go along with this and I mean long story short. What it comes down to is a ninety miles hour fastball. In fact it. One hundred five on our fastball. From ross chapman fastest ever recorded a does not come close. You would rather get hit by a hundred and five monitor fastball in the ribs then get punched by any any fighter in the any league fighter. And let's you sorry go ahead. Let's be clear getting punched in the ribs sucks. It's not a fun hit by baseball in the ribs. Suck it sucks to right. Let's be super clear about this. So i get i get punched in the face for fun. That's kind of what i do. And i'm telling you when this question came through. I was like yeah. That's a good question. So way to go quinn. We appreciate you challenging us and also enriching our lives exponentially but we i. I mean watch mike tyson. You like just go. Watch the mike tyson highlights and figure that that the the amount of pressure that dude is generating is is like three four times. What you get out of a hundred five mile. An hour fastball. Well so out of the so. Let's let's put the numbers to this real quick break five. That's still one hundred and sixty point. Three four jewels if you're getting hit by if you're getting punched by an elite fighter and this is like what what is it close range. Is that what it is. Yes short range. Short range power punches. So that's we're talking like close distance elite. Hook that kind of thing. Yeah and that's two hundred forty one point three four. Yeah so that's a lot for the league could be a rear uppercut you know something like that but yeah and so somebody like mike. Tyson is gonna hit you with more than that more than agar's with more than that other hit with baseball for sure. For sure. Well conor mcgregor is not a heavyweight. Why bring mike tyson. So you talk about jason..

But yeah Lows still in the upper sixties low seventies but with that humidity just wet just to get in and get the job done and get the hell out. Hit out That's that's the goal for. Unc what is your prediction in this one. He used a map to give up nearly six hundred yards a game last year. Yeah so what are your thoughts. You kind of go bears. It almost looks like it. They belong in the big twelve. They've got a big twelve sooners. Get it together. I do favor the bears in this one. I think mccaffrey learned a lot about his team in boulder. If they fix the stupid penalties that game would have been closer. So it's gonna come down to discipline. Can they take care of the ball. I like and see to win this one nine. Well i i. I liked that a lot Vanderbilt in fort collins Tomorrow night at eight o'clock. Okay rams i love ya. Last week was a struggle against an fcs powerhouse. Let's see if they learn from their mistakes and take vandy a little bit more seriously. Temperatures are going to be in the eighties. You will not retiring with cody wilson denver front range whether for our weekend forecast for these games that are going to be taking place sunday. Nfl football We've got the denver broncos in east radford Taking on the new york giants two o'clock local kickoff time. What's the weather like going to be about. Seventy seven degrees at kickoff with a southwest wind at about fifteen miles hours shouldn't have too much of an impact on the game should be mostly sunny skies and do favor the broncos in this one they will cover the spread their two and a half. Last time i saw. I think in trading between two and a half and three but zeroed harbor in absolutely the on that. I do think that they will cover it. And i think Did you watch any of the tampa. Watch the whole game last. It was really entertaining. I can't decide between whether tampa bay wanted or or dallas lost it first week jitters a lot of mistakes. I didn't get a chance to watch it. Obviously because we ryan we we played last night but It was much closer. I was going. I think dak prescott looked really good. What was fifty eight forty to fifty eight somebody. Nfl between jack and brady they had one hundred eight pass attempts. That's donkey lous. That is ridiculous. Brady put it up dead. Pass a test need to check it out but yeah that was a great game to get people back. Thanks for for football. Dallas defense much improved in many aspects. You know the offense on tampa bay side particularly with brady. You gave up two picks and they also had a fumble in the red zone. And that's just going to be killer but dax presence in the pocket. Coming off of an awful injury was really impressive. Would have never guessed. He had an injury now. I'm glad he got back and glad there's football back. "Games this week, and there are were baseball school sound wounded? That sounded like a wild cat there. How is Connecticut today that something was 26? Listen, it was it's a double elimination turn. They know Connecticut is still alive toy in tomorrow in the baseball terror, they did lose. 26 3 at Notre Dame. Notre Dame got all their runs out today. It's okay. I'm not worried. I don't know at all, because Notre Dame beat somebody, 10 nothing yesterday, So it's just the weekend continues in South bed. I got to say about this softball. There's go down at Oklahoma City tonight. There's still another game after this one about that. I was curious at the earliest supposed to start at 12, 30 Eastern time. That's right. 11 30 in Oklahoma City. Now this is off the air. It will still be going on. This is only bottom of the fifth right now. With Oklahoma 43 against U C L A. We could have extra inning. Still an Oklahoma State versus FS you at Florida State? That's there, just standing by someone else is going to be eliminated tonight. Long evening question. That's obvious to ask which you talked about the Milwaukee Bucks. Can you say my goodness, This team is going to be eliminated again because at Brooklyn James Harden left in the opening minute reinjuring the hamstring and still Brooklyn took the second round opener over Milwaukee. 1 15 1 Oh, seven. Kevin Durant 29 points. Kyrie Irving with 25 bucks from three point range. Where 64 30. The Nets announced to sell out crowd of 15,750 with 98% fully vaccinated wow to the NHL playoffs. Islanders with three late goals, including the empty Netters 41 winners against Boston that ties up the second round series two games apiece. Tampa Bay's up three games to one after beating Carolina 64 essential quality won the Belmont Stakes, third round French Open victories for Americans Cocoa Golf and Sloane Stephens. John Rome had to withdraw from the memorial golf tournament after testing positive for Covid as he was leading through three rounds by six strokes. NASCAR's on FS one tomorrow four P.m. Eastern time in major league baseball there only three games still going. The A's are winning again. Top of the 9th 53, Oakland Ahead at Colorado. The Angels got an early home run from Shohei Otani is 16. But the Mariners are up 53 over the Angels in the bottom of the fifth. Top of the fifth. It's the Mets at Padres scoreless, Jacob Crumb is on the mound and incredible. He's throwing 100 Mile. An hour pitch is like they're going out of style. In fact, if you include the two months of last season and the two months so far of this season I saw the top two pictures in throwing 100 Mile. An hour pitch is just in first innings number two on the list. There have been eight a guy has eight first inning 100 Mile hour pitches. Diagram has 57 in first innings last year. It's just crazy. How good he is on top of the heat that he's been bringing Needless to say, four scoreless inning, six strikeouts, No walks E R A down to 0.65. This is just stinking crazy. Pittsburgh beat Miami in 12 Innings 87. Miami's lost eight straight. Oh, the Oklahoma Sooners have just homered. Ladies and gentlemen, may be no extra innings tonight. 53 in the fifth Chris Planks team could still be playing tomorrow. Basically, Plank is the anti Arnie Whenever we're on airplanes team does. Well, wow. There you go. That's right. I was thinking Arizona was going to win a close game today. They'd be playing while our knees on the show, But they are playing the plague. Santa Barbara in baseball. Okay, Baseball is played. Okay? Yes. There you go. We got that going. The Sega appreciate that you want to get in Erin Torrez on the Spaniard. Erin underscore Torres. I'm in stinking genius one. It's like old times. We're on the air. We got in Arizona game on the area that you didn't know that they're playing in the baseball World Series. Right now, we will be off the air before all these World Series games will be that I promise you that, you know, I was wondering if there was another game because I knew this game got postponed because of weather out there in Oklahoma. By the way, I know nothing about softball that looks like an amazing facility. And I know that the city of Oklahoma City really embraces softball, so Pretty cool to see the support that the girls are getting out there. But like I said, I've been kind of into this softball. I took softball for three semesters at University of Arizona. I bet you I thought you majored in it. I thought that was your major. We got to play in the field where the girls got the player was awesome. How many home runs yet? Never. Exactly. Yeah, that was good, though. It was good. I was pitching. So you're pitching, okay? But you don't expect to be via hitter and a pitcher. I tell you want to get it. Like I said, Aaron underscore tours. I've been sticking genius one. By the way. How much load management is there going to be next year? Based on all the injuries we're seeing this year with Anthony Davis and now with the hardened and of course, LeBron and Let's just say, yada, yada yada goes on and on and on. Um you know, you put it in an 82 game season. These stars are gonna be lucky to play 41 games the way things are going on right now. You know, I was going to ask you about that because I think it could be one of two things. So I think you could argue, shorter offseason. Weird year. That is a perfectly logical argument for all these injuries. I think you could also say the opposite. Couldn't you say these guys take so much time off now during the regular season that it's like when you have to ramp up for the playoffs? I mean, think about all the injuries that have happened just since the playoffs. James Harden tonight. Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis. I mean, it's a lot and these are only to the star players. Not not, You know the peripheral guys..

"Course he's got to handle it right there in the middle of a three game losing streak right now. Well paul okay. There's no excuses you can't mess up mother's day the what's worse messing up mother's day when you married with kids or messing up valentine's day before you marry with kids. I still think it's mother's day when you have kids little kids. Yeah and you have to get involved with the little kids so explain what mother's day is to them and they add but little cards and they do all the little drawings and stuff like that and that kind of thing what choice. Sabrina sabrina like that. Well yeah i mean. She's she's definitely very creative. He likes to draw the she understand. Mother's day is coming. not necessarily. I know that you're going to do something for your mom. Yeah of course we do. But you gotta get sabrina. Do something for i know and but you have to make her understand what she's doing it for i. I i know i understand and i. She's gotten their sierra. She's definitely getting there. She's definitely understanding a lot. More but the concept of mother's day might be a little bit overhead. Draw a little card. oh yeah of course crayons. And she's doing all that now she is she is. It's very you know i love you. Mommy i don't know about that. But i love you. Can you put the crayon and her hand and just help. Her just helped her right in. I know well she does She draws smiley faces now. So can maybe draw a picture. Mommy that's all we can do there. You go that would be very cute. That's something that. I've been thinking about right little smiley out to a spa and then you can handle it. I'm sure got a nice bother. Yeah i mean. I need a swat team to get her out of that. I don't know if i'm sending her anywhere. Take tak- take some brennan to library. Yeah they have. The spot comes at the house so you don't have any sheets on the window. That's right. yeah yeah you can't have that either no massages or anything in house. There's nothing i mean. Yeah so if you wanna see what. I'm doing later. Come by peek. In the window will be there. Hey watch a little tv. Make it some lunch. We're we're in here. We're in here hanging out. Yeah mother's day thinks mother's day is going to be packed at the restaurant. Stuff restrictions are going to be lifted us set. Yes yeah i know. That's a big one. So what's your take on father's day father's day like should you hang out with other fathers doing what you wanna do or is it like you have to be with the family. Well on pasture as governor. And i've played in a father son golf tournament right so like the father in the certainly want. You just do what you want right. I know that's kinda like my father's day. Yeah of course you have babies babies different story because it'd be mats birth first father's day as well yes. We can't just leave and go through what he wants. That's different story yeah. It's a different story but when you all right. So what age do the fathers get to do what they want. I guess it's all a little bit different depending on the dynamics. Yeah yeah so. I i would say i could see like. Are you gun. Started playing golf together. How old was he. Value is ten. While i throw them out of a golf court when he was six life but i mean to throw them out of the golf court sure so we were playing arizona. We are in the golf cart. And it's great and arizona in the desert sometimes with your golf cart so you can go to the next hole. Yeah so we in the gulf. So i figured i was going to slam on the brakes and turn the wheel and we go sliding like fish tailing. Because i before there he goes. And i didn't tell him and he got propelled out of the golf course and out in the desert out in arizona. The these things that they called jumping cactus. Oh and they're low to the ground and if you go near them they will just absolutely prayer outside of the leg and they'll stay in there. Oh no he got. He was about an inch away from his back in that thing. Oh god and my buddy. Mike north-south spuds was up on the top of the green looking down. At this whole thing i could was. Why does it was like why are you. Why does it go so gunners. Not he's laying on his back. He's this cactus. And i'm like okay so there's two ways to react to this sure. There's this is a good little tip for you. Don't don't panic. Don't overreact so if sabrina falls and she starts crying and then genius worse yeah. That's exactly what happened. Goners over there. And i think he wants to start crying and i'm looking at him. I get your ass carton. That's so yeah. But i'll tell you my heart was now sure hounding one hundred miles hours just praying to god that he was okay. Imagine if he did so many cool things with him like crazy things like that and all sorts of fun stuff and trying to create memories. Of course yeah absolutely absolutely. That's what you've got. When memory. I will never forget for sure. Well good thing. You didn't end up in the cactus. That's day ruina right there. That's the course of the day changes at that moment. Bruce McLaren Pt. III - Life after Death: Road to the P1
"When we last met up with Bruce the young. Qe had left his home country of New Zealand and made his home in England working for legendary carmaker John Cooper in his factory. Bruce's racing career abroad had a bit of a bumpy. Start but after two wins at the Medina of Formula One. Not because I would say the machias Monaco Silverstone Bruce was finding his confidence behind the wheel is Medina. Like Madina Right. That's the first time I've ever really called on to city in Western. Saudi Arabia Coleman Anyway. It's the one thousand nine hundred fifty eight German Grand Prix. At the Nurburgring Bruce Finishes Fifth Overall and first in the formula to class. He was hanging in with the formula. One cars thing about how Formula One cards. You have to stay ahead of to be fifth overall but still win. The form from the to us about twenty-one sounds about right I'm not gonNA contest that's pretty crazy. Just like bump up a class like yeah I mean that. Just shows the prowess over. Yeah Yeah So. After the fifty eight German Grand Prix Hayman's mechanic Colin set off for England a race in brands hatch. Which was the very next day which I thought was insane. What these guys are always driving to raise amazing. They may act like now Racing is very posh. I guess like these guys are treated as athletes like you mentioned in the last episode. There's just so much data on them. They're checking their pulse. And their heart rates you know they probably like decompress the dudes after race in like check all their muscles and stuff like back then. It was a pretty like rag tag almost like the circus is coming to town. Yeah and it's there was no thought for scheduling. Yeah I'm really it's like. Hey we have formula one race in Germany. How will we go to Britain the next day? And there's like there's a race on there I don't know I guess two races back to back. In a day holiday weekend we might as well take advantage. Might as well make a vacation out of. Let's get some Carl's junior on the way. So they managed to complete the three hundred eighty mile journey from the nurburgring to brands. Hatch overnight and cooking. Yeah Bruce Hop in the car and finished third at that race and by the way. He wasn't the only one who made it to that raise. It was like pretty much the entire field in Germany. It's like a huge caravan of big old haulers and like probably station wagons and stuff just ripping down the autumn. Get on the M one. You know that's a local reference to angle everyone in the Midwest right now is like yeah. Three hundred and eighty miles. That's your commute. Yeah how far was la to Albuquerque for high low? It was like eight hundred miles so not that impressive. Sixteen hours twenty five dollars. God that was yeah. That was yeah. It was tasty blames my heart attack on that show. He's like like we just shot season. Two of high low the Z's are awesome now But like she was like very concerned while. We're shooting it because the last season was just so hard on us. This one was way easier by last time we work in eighteen hour days for like a month in a row and I had a heart attack like two weeks after it was weird man like that show like gotten the rhythm of that like you said eighteen hour days it was like okay you wake up drives garage work all day and then come home sleep for a little bit and then just do that and then after like two weeks this is like just a weird kind of few mind state. I forgot to pay bills beard dream state and like it's not like we're just going and work in it was like the highest pressure. Just everything was going wrong so much stress constantly and just like I think all of us cried. I cried cried cried. I was angry writing my lyrics by Bruce's twenty first birthday. He had competed in eleven European races and he had finished every one of them. Bruce believes it was because of the shared meticulous nature between he and his mechanic Colin they always tried to be first to tech inspections. I wants to practice and always have the car looking in tiptop shape in his book. Bruce maintains that quote. Three things are important. Go a long way towards winning races. I think it's time for just a little. Reminder of what racing was like back then the reputation that open-wheel racing has today as of precision and other worldly engineering and safety. But that's not how the sport was perceived in the late fifties. Now let no. Let's just listen to how Bruce describes a race. In Avis Germany. To my mind it was ridiculous to have a race. On the Avis Sick. It proved nothing and it was dangerous consisting of two two and a half Moss straights at one end by a hairpin and the other very steeply banked corner and when I say steeply banked boy I mean. Steeply banked is around forty degrees. It sounds more like something you'd see in running man to full throttle than a sanctioned race. I just think about. That's the most ridiculous racetrack I've ever heard. Yes big old oval that's not even oval is like hairpins up. Both sides knows a big bank at one side maintains a Frickin slingshot around the moon apart. And then you have to go through a hairpin shoe like the shape of the Caribbean her family. Yeah yeah so like you could just maintain a two and a half miles so you can maintain just like top out speed for. I'm guessing like close to six miles. Said Yeah they are in the book he says I think the average speed for that race was like one hundred fifty miles hour. That's absurd you remember. This is in the late fifties. Cars didn't have frigging seatbelts back. Then I don't think no no. No he goes on to describe the racing. At the Avis Circuit Race itself was like a group of boys and dodging cars wheels. Touching noses entails bumping jostling for the lead. But we do of that one hundred fifty miles per hour. Dodging cars are just bumper cars. Doug Jim Jim can't get a loan. I'm going to get some Cotton Candy Army Kit. The Dodoma's ooh that sounds. I'm going to try and win stuff bare minimum. There's a part of the documentary where he describes these like really steep banks. And he's going so fast that like it's hard to keep his hands in the bottom of the steering wheel like it's point his hands. Yeah isn't that crazy? That is insane. Bruce's appreciations about Avis testified as a crash sent one of the competitors flying thirty feet in the air and ejecting. The driver. The car went thirty feet. Car was out. Yeah the rest of the pack was able to dodge the car and continued their Breakneck Chase. Down the stretch back. Then they didn't even have like What's it like lotion rounds? Yeah they never. Yellow flag doesn't sound like as long as our cars on the way that's like a man. Keep it going. Crashes like these were not uncommon in racing back then. Bruce's car through a connecting rod that race by the way and the ejected driver also survived his crash with a broken leg and four. Broken Vertebrae like our racecar driver back. Then I'd be like okay. I'm down to race. Thank God I blew karate. Yeah certainly marina okay. I'm not going to win but at least I'm not dying today. There does seem to be at least a little bit of that kind of feeling. Drought the book because he when he describes time that it's car broke breaks down. He's also he's very sad obviously but also he then like in. The same breath described some horrific crash. Where someone just gets thrown from their car. His good friend got killed in a race and then he just like race the next day like they didn't even think about it. It was just like yeah. Of course I'm GONNA race guys used to die all the time.
