"Novel approaches to the work force I mean just recently yeah I mean we've had a variety of things like telecommuting work from home open workspace people always trying to connect mess with the the work environment I assume all in an effort to get more productivity out of workers keep them happy we stop of the open work space though like all those words though the man in that might be work some of this is coming from so you know to every action there's an equal and opposite reaction but we have to go to Germany where they are trying out something called the five hour work day all right so as we got a guy writes that he worked at this firm and it's a celery cut the reason I took a salary cut as he wanted to spend two afternoons a week with his kids go down pretty awesome a few months later he went back to his bosses and asked for a salary to be reinstated because even not showing up for two days two afternoons a week he was still producing as much work as before workers should get out so I'm asked productive as I was before so I should be paid any less his boss is the like Russell with the for a little bit but then reconsidered his full salary so when he acquired a company he decided to float out this idea of a five hour work day twenty five hour work week you started dating you leave at one okay eight to one and the idea would be you will have to be productive in those five hours you have a job to do and so when you were at work I expect you to work to that means no cellphones out that means no social media that means that we are using the web surfing the web you know cut down the chit chat stand around it if you if you want to find out how you know your coworkers daughter's wedding was this weekend he grabs some Chinese take out brother conference room at one o'clock and have not it but between eight nine one I'm your mom nose to the grind stone so to speak because I think would be the the what they figured out any and it sounds to me like the math that came out of this was while we're paying you from nine to five you only actually working five hours the other three hours is a bunch of crap you you you you shouldn't be doing it stuff that is not relevant to the company what you're being paid for and if we just cut that out what we'd all be more efficient so I mean research has been done on this for years and it shows that most people are really truly only productive at work for about four five hours a day so reducing work time doesn't necessarily cost companies output this is what they were getting already but now you're freeing up that time so that they can be how to your people your pick up that hobby spend more time with their kids they they're rejuvenated the come back into the office the ready to hit it hard for the next five hours no this isn't the first time something like this is been done it has happened in other places there was a company remember reading about in San Diego the the build paddle boards okay very San Diego paddle boards yeah right yeah and the CEO of the company that created it felt guilty you know hit the waves at one o'clock every day when people were still not every day but you get the point what people were sold the office board company so they are they went to like a five hour work day they would try and they did it for about two years and the CEO said you know what it did stop some employees enthusiasm there outside life was growing so much better than like that within the company so they still do it but they reserve it and limit it to the summer months interesting so they do it for like a season okay okay from like Maisie too I wonder how hard that is the guy Mike Swick flip the switch you know what I mean you know what if the if the alternative would be eight nine hours a day what year did not call down you would flip the switch because there was a time we we I think most of us remember that dumb you don't have a cell phone at your desk I'm what you might have a computer all right you have worked with computers so you use it for work no no but my point is used for work you didn't have access to Amazon prime you know what I'm saying to you it was a work computer that the the phone on your desk you could make personal calls from yeah but on the flip side of that too what you're talking about is what my my parents experienced right when they work not grow up but when they walk through the door at night they were distracted by a phone their face wasn't buried in the laptop getting extra work done they weren't answering one more email from the boss in the evening so there is a trade off right and I think that this is a very interesting trade off and it would only work for certain companies because you think about it this to you I I'm not exactly sure what with with this guy does but if you have to give customers or you have clients you just sell it you know they what they want to be with you at two o'clock I'm sorry were done at one who how does that how do you okay where that with your family some businesses that it just wouldn't work or do you or do you shift it and you know you've got some people that were from eight to one and others that work from twelve to five units you have two different shifts going on there but if everyone is doing the only way that this would work is if everybody in the company is doing and what I and the boss understands and can't get mad that Hey you know what I sent you an email last night why did you respond to it like everybody's expectations all have to be on the same page because you know I I think anybody out there who works in certain kind of an office environment can probably relate at one point like you know I really need to get work done but people keep coming in the office or other or the or the phone keeps vibrating or whatever it might be you know I'm saying it's like I knowledge did I have difficulty focusing at times and I felt bad as a boss if I close my door because it was like this bat is the open door policy when a project but if I close the door I could focus and get whatever I had to get done if I left the door open it was a steady stream of people coming in and I would just get the second one anything done I my most productive time I I usually run seven at night so four thirty to seven is when I actually got things done when people are leaving yeah all the other lights were off in the office okay we can actually get to everybody focus on getting out in Europe not not coming in you know shoot the breeze of the boss yeah I live at seven so I could use a car pulling through because I don't like sitting in traffic makes sense and Tyrone but I just think you're just you're seeing how the labor market is shifting in even in Germany they're using this as a way to recruit and a T. tight labor market I might be a heck of a Benny if somebody offered you five I think a lot of people think flexibility over more money these days to agree agree maybe that restore your faith in him and maybe you need a little more of a push don't worry Pamela says she can do that for you it's coming up next on Arizona's new things bullying is an epidemic whether it happens on social media the hallway the playground bullying.
