"Along with reporter Mike Reicher did it's almost like a heist story and meets a who done it story on some very clever local medical folks the U. job with connections to Amazon in a variety of other people connections in China how they managed to source primarily nasal swabs but how they managed to source some of the hardest to find products in the world right now to help you know kickstart corona virus testing Evan thank you for joining us thanks for having me early Christian so let me start at the beginning with the story because the story was so good and so it's so hard to stop reading once you got into it but how did you how did the what was the inception points on this story and what actually precipitated you to getting involved in this particular tale sure well then enter data a chip and called me on Friday night and so I think we need to check out the you don't have some sort of shipment but they're working on and I got a call either mass and called shipped here he is the laboratory manager over over at UW Madison and he just had a heck of a tail he sh yeah he he had had been talking with a friend his former landlord and she had just you know trying to help and and shifting its Facebook posts about ramping up their lab work and she's really excited about what he was doing and she offered some masks she works in import and and export and she runs a local business here in Seattle are called three by three Seattle I can design firm and so she was asking heck all the connections in China and they're offering you know masks do you do you want any and they they weren't offering very much you know couple couple dies and and he said you know I really need is made of surgical swabs think that set her on kind of this class to bring some of these feed and Keith swabs that they're called to Seattle so let's let's plan a pretty interesting right let's talk about that before we go any further in the story how important this is this is the longest Q. tip for people who don't know how important is this particular item for testing people for corona virus so the real big constraint right now is the supplier casket arm on testing so Jeff told me they just need a medicine or ology lab they can process some five thousand stock today but they're not getting five thousand specimen today they're only getting about half that on average it seems and so you know there's a there's a problem after the bottleneck is is supplies right now and so what they need is the swans and they need what's called viral transport media a fancy term for you know just this this specimen preserving liquid so that it may take a swab is taken so far to know that this seems like it's you know scraping your branch and then they pull it out and don't put it in the in the too with some pink liquid and snapped the swab and then and then the virus just falls falls right off the swap into this liquid and then across the lab to process and so the the issue is we need in Washington state and throughout the nation more testing kits to get to get up and running so so they can meet our mobile laboratory processing which has ramped up okay so evident we we know we need some swabs we know there in China how what happens next sure well so I needed natal sun she's though because he held by a business owner so she you know knowing how how things work in China she you know she told me she can get anything made in China she's got twenty years of experience working with Chinese factory and so you know she was basically scrolling Holly Baba looking that's the the big commerce website and you know basically looking for these medical supplies going back and forth with wood Johnson said is this what you need to destruction it and she narrowed down one factory and it was actually close to a factory that she worked really closely with before and she had a contact at that factory named strawberry strawberry a saleswoman and she has strawberries and strawberries boss to go unchecked bacteria and so they go and they they drive over the factory and and they get some samples they couldn't see the the the supplier blind running at the at the time and so they they came back and and then there was the heck up into this basically that they were having a hard time figuring out how to get the samples back to Seattle so so bear that Jeff paired could take a look out on you know I have a cold nineteen of the fact that everything obviously including freight air freight shipping and so they were having a hard time you know getting getting those samples back but but strawberries boss had a family connection to a doctor in in Quebec province in I hope I'm pronouncing that right and and humans doctor who was the work of the boxes brother in law had had been working with with past and move on and the factory that had supplied Wuhan with thank you and so they made that connection and and after a while and you know instead of getting samples from that factory Jeff at the lab decided you know what we just got it we got to take a chance we got a risk and they nida the the local shuttle business on our website at work won't work for a hundred twenty five thousand dollars on it let's get some slobs and and and you know we're gonna hope that boats right we trust strawberry we tried we know we have this long relationship we think this is going to be there when ever when you were when you were doing this Sir when you're following the story and these details kept unfolding in these these twists and turns it did you I mean did you feel like you're in a like an ocean's eleven kind of movie is this I'm not a reporter is this typical it doesn't sound typical to me well I mean this one kept on the full exam just kind of strange ways and you know it really illustrates how much we need be expected to try it because you know this is a public it you know public university and they're throwing in a hundred twenty five thousand dollars kind of you know it's something that sounds a little a little because we really need this well I think that's the point of the story and you know really really important message either crosses you know folks are doing everything they can to to sort of ramp ramp up testing and you know which is key to opening up our our economy it's Q. Q. you know removing some of these distantly measures that but the governor as well as has put in place and so I'm not really trying to stress the importance but now it does seem like a bit of a hybrid because what you see caper I mean it's got a really interesting quality so the king of the caper then right so now we're at the point she has fronted without seeing a product she has fronted a hundred twenty five thousand dollars because she has faith in people that she's dealt with to get these swaps what happens next so this is where they had all kinds of logistics issues right and like I like I mentioned global shipping lines are are struggling you know there's not as many commercial flights going to China and sometimes you know they'll be cargo on commercial flights it's just that M. and regulations are changing cover those affected everything and so the usual means forgetting stop from China to Seattle you know that was going to take too long keep in mind this is both for the the the surge was in full swing right this is this is in late March and they're trying to work through these details so things are really picking up and and there's real worry and a lot of hospitals about where things are headed and so Janice had been on email threads where another Jack Jack Wilkie and he's he's our CEO of global consumer at Amazon he's like one of the the top executives one of the top three guys there and he shoes the other job the Amazon Jaffa in an email out of the blue and said Hey we really need the swab we got to get him to see how soon can you help me out I mean this is this is loony stopping by Elliott Gould place this is insane it sounds like a story about cocaine but it's about can you tell well there you go and and it's sort of a hail Mary Jean all right I mean I'm sure you will do you have a million things to think about right now and you know Amazon has put an emphasis on trying to bring medical supplies to those mistakes and using their you know their their corporate power throughout traditional you know it's good public relations for them and and you know it doesn't hurt to sure their their bottom line well they already have a shipment of medical supplies heading back to the states and they said if you can get on you know he can cross World War taken for you and we've got this chartered plane so yeah we'll do it it's crazy so they get they managed to make the deadline to get the package now how many swabs are in this package at this point so there's eighty thousand for UW Madison and then another twenty thousand entries GL children's shoes piggy backed on the order and so eighty four boxes test kits which again include the the swabs and the and then you know Hiles of transport media we're here with Evan bush she's a reporter for The Seattle Times okay so they get that they managed to get to the airport on time to get this stuff loaded up and what was left in the charter aircraft it takes off it starts heading to United States what them bring it to Orange County and I think it's trucked up to Seattle and it arrived last Sunday and you know I I I got to see this whole process and about eleven AM yeah right Amazon prime truck showed up and they start unloading these boxes and shelves bear the the laboratory manager he was so high but he was super nervous right he was like you know he told me while the plane was flying over you you know try and you know I I'm I might have bought a hundred thousand dollars worth of packing peanuts we were not really now right hello Kitty this year sure so it is I mean I think he's a lot of nervous energy policy on it and the first box to pop the trunk and then he attacks you're going at it with the car keys ripping it off brand and pull them out and they look legit and you know he's so helpful is going on hopefully it's not Q. tips in Kuwait but but he's given out you know who to Lawler's usually excited about that sure and and then he rushed over to his in his laboratory or one of the use of medicine laboratories I should say and you know you gotta pass the test right to see if there are legitimate and that's when things took a real emotional terms we met him in the lobby about you know an hour after after he ripped open those boxes and his face was just you know he was really down totally crestfallen she was really really upset and that he kinda ripped one of the swamps apart a little bit and he thought it was cotton cotton is no good cons not procreate surgical but nineteen testing and yeah I think you know at that point you think your match he had wasted a hundred twenty five thousand blacks any other reporters that merit will ration you honestly you couldn't write this is like a like an end of act two false victory like this is this is the actual screen placed up for yeah I mean it was really strange moment and you know I think he was he was feeling really down and he's like I don't know you know if there's a story here you know and we're saying well it's kind of a story you can either way you know he said let me see let me bring a rental outlets you blow me make sure you know we really know what's going on and the next day we talked and both squads were not what they had ordered exactly but they were really close and the the material was not it was polyester and.
