How are you man. I am very tired. I had a very eventful weekend and my body is reminding me that i am not twenty two years old anymore so i'm trying to work through that myself. I understand. the events are very positive because sir you are part of a championship team. Yeah so a few people actually did listen to that episode and go to hamtramck to throw balloons emmy which i don't know if it's great because he listened or bad 'cause they hit me in the face with balloons. You might not want to hear this. But i'm just going to declare it great on both counts because that's just awesome fair enough but I was a part of the hammock yacht. Canoe raises iran for whiskey in the jar and we won. We beat to weigh in the final. We beat smalls on the semi and we beat someone else. I forgot who and the browns. Before but yeah. It was a very fun experience. I was nervous because essentially you're pushing this kind of canoe like boat. Kinda looks like a piece of pizza that has wheels on the back wheel in the front. Almost like a wheelbarrow in the way. You're pushing it down Joseph campo turning around coming back down the street and in your other partners jump in. And i was worried so i was like to be slippery. I don't wanna fall become a meam. Like this is gonna be bad. But i was invited by my friend. Katie who works in a jar. And i was co-signed by former soccer team mate named sarah and i know sarah because she's very very athletic but she's like five three five four kind of compact strong lady but still compact. I can push down the street. And then she mentioned of teammate. Lauren and mike lauren who ends up being my neighbor. I'm like i can push down the street to then i met scott..

"Dot com. Mike lauren. mike. Your bike guy. In fact we should probably just call you by ca luria. Please put five dollars in the pun jar so terrible. I'm sorry are how do you feel about e bikes. I love you bikes. They make cycling more accessible to more people. And you know it keeps people out of cars a lot of times because people will choose an e bike for route that they would normally choose for car. So i'm i'm all for them. Well that's exactly what we're going to be Cycling through today nice. nice hello. Welcome to gadget lab. I'm lauren good. I'm a senior writer at wired. And i michael gloria senior editor at wired. And we're also joined this week by wired. Senior associate reviews editor adrian so who joins us from portland. He adrian guys and wired reviews editor julian takato. Who's joining us from new york city. Hey julian all right. So this is the e bike episode. It's everything you've ever wanted to know about e bikes if you're a regular listener of this podcast or if you read wired you know that. We like to talk about bikes. But here's the thing. And this is where i ruined my credit as a tech writer. Here i've never ridden an e bike. Never i know what my colleagues here. Tell me aka by kalari. they're fast. They're fun to ride and they can free up traffic and cut down on emissions so today we're talking about both buying and renting e bikes in the second half of the show. Adrian is waiting to tell us what you need to know about buying any bike. If you're ready to make that commitment but first let's talk about just kind of dipping our toes in. Let's talk about bike sharing because julian you recently wrote about lifts new e bike would this is lift the ridesharing company and they're doing e bikes. Tell us about this right. So lift actually owns several fleets around the country as they're called they're bike sharing fleets Many of them have regular bikes. Traditional or at a log bikes. However you want to call them and then some of them are pedal assist bikes which are also known as electric bikes and so there is a current electric bike already. But this is a new version that they unveiled. Its currently in public beta. It's going to be available in the bay area as well as in select other cities initially like new york and chicago but essentially it's just an improved version of their pedal assist bike. It's more powerful. It does everything for you. So you don't need to deal with any gears or anything like that so it's very beginner. Friendly you just kind of hop on and go and it has enough power to sort of accurately give you power when you're going up a hill for example or it sort of manages all of that by itself. You don't really need to think about it or anything you just kinda ride and go and if you need that extra power to cut across the road then it'll give it to you or if you need less power because you're on a flat road then it won't you know overburden you with so much that you're going super fast. And it's all also limited to City limits so for example in new york it's limited to twenty miles per hour but they did a couple more things with this version. They made it completely reflective paint job. So it's much safer to see at night or easier to see. I should say and the breaks are also stronger and has a much larger range of sixty miles. They say which. I don't think anyone is really going on a sixty mile round trip with an electric bike from the bike share program but paid now. Now you can. That's that's probably that's about ten rides or so. Yes like like city bike or like bay wheels in san francisco. Yes with having that larger range. It just basically means that it's not necessarily for one writer to take it out sixty mile trip but it means the service. Operators don't have to swap out those batteries as often. Because it'll just last a whole lot longer so the battery is actually have to be swapped out. There not rechargeable so that's two different methods at the moment they do. Have these vans that. Just go by these fleet stations. And they'll find the electric one swap them out and that's still going to be the case with the new one but left is also implementing these new charging stations into the existing docking stations. So some select charging station. Starting this year will actually have the ability to chew automatically. We charged those bikes when they're docked so they won't need to replace them as often or at all. I know that lime the scooter company in portland that they have like their fleet of contractor juicers or whatever that they pay like some nominal fee like run around like find all the scooters to recharge them. So i don't know if lift is doing that to basically similar Do they just basically all in a van. They're not call juicers that is but it's basically it's super easy to swap out the batteries but then of course if they're implementing and connecting. These docs to the grid then. They don't need to do that at all. And i think the ideas eventually. We'll get to a point where all of these existing stations will just be able to automatically charge these things. But at the moment i think that would require a lot of overhaul in the public infrastructures. Extra sector so. I think that basically is the easiest way to just swap out the batteries every once a day. Maybe every other day depends on how much it's being used to these. E bike shares come with helmets or other safety gear. You might need. They do not they all recommend that you wear one and you bring your own but that responsibly design you some public programs. Give you some helmets for free. I know new york has like a specific helmet fitting class that you can sort of find with the department of transportation and they'll actually give you a free.

And everything happens for a reason, and you can really see that as evidence and Ben Higgins season of the bachelor. No, and it's just one of the greatest clearly one of the greatest seasons of all time, and also I enjoyed watching it because it hearts me back to the days when I was so into the bachelor. You know like up on everything and it just. It reminded me of when and why and how I I used to love the bachelor. Yes, also not again that I didn't watch it, but I saw people watching it on Instagram, and they were just like showing the actual TV, and it is insane. How different all the contestants look like Joe! Joe Looks Judge Different Person. Lauren is a different person Amanda different person back a different. Different person like they all just glowed up so hard, and it's like I can't believe looks like when they were on TV. Because in my mind. What they look like now is what they've always look like yet, Noah, it's insane, but they also I'm sure everyone's like so much work done. Which I'm sure like. People have had worked on a little lip here a little Chin there. But you can also make. Like babies. "What is your Jalingo streak right now? ooh I apparently did not complete my streak on Tuesday so I guess one whenever one of my favorite little tricks that dual and go has is that <hes> if you're listening and you're not familiar dueling go encourages as you to use up every day and every consecutive day that you use it. You're sort of streak number gets higher so it encourages you to return to the APP. <hes> there's something very very upsetting about losing a long streak and one of the genius genius things they've built in is a wage to buy back your streak as long as it's within twenty four hours and the payment goes to I think just back do lingo or perhaps it's donated to some kind of charity but it's a very low amount of money that I think it's probably well worth it until I get back a one hundred two hundred day streak. Luckily I will never have a straight double. I will not be sending any money back to lingo. Sorry <hes> do you think it that's great <hes> my recommendation recommendation. This week is a book is called. The most human human what artificial intelligence teaches us about being alive. Have you read this. It is a bit old. I think it's it's from two thousand ten maybe <hes> but it is <hes> a book about the Logan Her prize which is this competition that takes place every year to basically beat the turing test so people prepare these artificial intelligent programs they're they're chat bots and and they send them to a panel of judges who have these five minute chuck conversations and then the judge is trying to determine if they're speaking to a human or computer and every year they get more advanced to get more interesting <hes> and you know the state of A._I.. Hi progresses but <HES> book release centers on the other part of this contest which is being a human who is put before a judge and the judge has to decide if it's a human error computer and <hes> the author who is Brian Christianson is one of these human contestants who's trying to prove his humanity to a panel of judges <hes> lest he be mistaken for an advanced chat bots script and it's it's sort of this beautiful story story of A._I.. And machine intelligence but also about like what it means to really be human and he leaves in all kinds of cool stuff about computers but also really cool floss affi stuff <hes> psychology stuff and and really arrives at this like beautiful discussion on what it means to be human <hes> I was just on a very long road trip in this was the audiobook that we'd selected for for the drive and it just was <music> something I looked forward to playing in the car like every time and got back in the car so I highly recommend it. "Joining us on the line to talk about all of it is Michael Oren, former Israeli ambassador to the United States. He's also the author of multiple New York Times, bestsellers, including six days of war June nineteen sixty seven in the making of the modern Middle East. Michael, thanks for joining Ben Shapiro show. Really appreciate it. So let's start with this. You tweeted last week about a New York Times editorial about rising anti-semitism anti-semitism, unfortunately, has been rising across the west. It's risen in the United States is risen from in Europe and yet newspapers like the New York Times are seeking to blame that on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. What is the relationship between anti Zionism and anti semitism, wise, left, seemingly so willing to cover for anti-semitism so long as guises anti Zionism? In the twenty first century if you don't wanna be called and. You're anti Israel, but dancing is very specific way, holding Israel at a standard that no other countries is held to in the world it saying that the Israeli Palestinian conflict is the worst conflict in the world, the most pressing moral conflict in the world and ignoring example, the arrest of hundreds of thousands of Muslims by China or the massacre of hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Syria ignoring that it is charging that the quote unquote Israel in Washington has too much power and controls. The median controls congress and buys politicians it is accusing Israel, war-crimes news. Belated Israel choosing genocide against the Palestinians and passes for legitimate anti Israel discourse. But in fact, idioms by even the definition of the United Nations, even by the definition of the paean union. There's thing with him Bassett, or Michael or former Israeli ambassador to the United States, so embassador or in a lot of the talk in the media has been specifically about one type of anti-semitism people wanna talk a lot about white supremacist, anti semitism, which is certainly worthy of discussion. But in terms of global threats to Jews it seems to me that statistically, speaking, the biggest threat to Jews is not white supremacist, anti semitism, which is evil and should be condemned wherever it is wherever it is promoted, but it is radical Muslim anti semitism, which is the greatest danger. Jus I mean, isn't that the case across the west as well as in the Middle East? Needed to Jews in Europe because of the influx of immigrants. Among the many radical Muslims into Europe in the United States, there's been outbreaks of violence against Jews and it's Burke, and in California, and, but the greatest campuses in the United States in the American press comes from Alaska. Calibrates been, you know, very easy to count swastikas, if you will count antisemitic incidents calibrate, anti-semitic atmosphere, on campus were afraid to be used if students on certain campuses, and afraid, pull themselves less be branded a racist. That's an atmosphere and bad Kamai mind, the most pressing problem, the United States today in advance in terms of. So let's talk for a second about the Israeli political situation right now, obviously, there's a lot of flux right now, given the fact that new elections have been declared prime minister Netanyahu was able to form a coalition. So the Knesset effectively dissolved itself. No have new elections again. Ambassador, do you expect there to be any change in the constituency in the Knesset? Or is this basically just going to be do over? Over, if, if it were held today, but three months very long time in politics. Many things can happen, and they'll be a shift in the political lane state, different parties will form distant parodies may break up. But what occurred in the last few days to my mind, ministry change, and Israel, last, seventy one years, most, the most pressing issue, here has been security, and it's released voted because they're afraid of their lives or for their laws, and the last twenty twenty five years Benjamin Netanyahu has appeared as the person was able to protect his really live. But now with additional fuel which may even be more more paramount fear, that is if you're not alive to their way of life fear, not of his of the of the hurry game who will make threaten their way of life. Whether they be secular or national traditional. And this is what big Lieberman now, the defense minister into into this fear that twenty thirty years country will have a population, which could be third to one half hurry. Gaby's ultra-orthodox Jews are not prepared to engage economy. Not prepared to defend the state also realize that has the largest population thirty of any industrialized countries in the world are natural growth rate is roughly free times that most European countries and young Israel. Population is both concerned about religious Parisian also right wing Resona pass the, the battle against religious coalition has been almost exclusively. Enhanced. Really nobody out there saying, hey young, right wingers? Coercion lieberman. Tap into that. Very big force in Israel politics, in the near future in the long term thing, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren ambassador, Oren, one of the big concerns that I've seen from many members of the American Jewish population is that President Trump's close relationship with prime minister Netanyahu could backfire, if President Trump is no longer presidents in other words, Trump because he's so warm. And because there's so many Democrats who hate President Trump that the backlash will come in the form of an anti Israel backlash once Trump is no longer an office. Is that a concern in Israel at all? With me. Van. President. Ministration we have known since our founding in nineteen forty eight and I think there's no debate about that with an Israel administration that has a recognized through some of this capital. The American embassy to Jerusalem as recognizes ready sovereignty of the over the Golan Heights. It has stood steadfastly by Israel in United Nations and posed all efforts. It has cut off funding to the, to the Palestinians when they leave the peace table. When Nate de-legitimize that's when they finally US law. So any Israeli, government can be right down up Sam center is going to express deep and profound gratitude to this administration, but having said that wear of political polarization in the United States and than distancing ourselves from this administration, which, I think, profound, gratitude gratitude, we should be reaching out across much as possible to Democrats, because, in, in the nature of things, the Democrats will be back, certainly in congress back in the house, maybe in the Senate, and eventually in the White House as well. And since bipartisan, support, his believe a, a paramount national strategic interests in the state of Israel, and the United States is our ally. I think we can do a better job of. Reaching out in investing more robustly democratic support for Israel speaking about that. What exactly is happening the American left? I'm old enough to remember when support for Israel was. In fact, bipartisan by pulling data. We are seeing a radical decrease in the amount of support for Israel inside the Democratic Party, obviously, Democratic Party leadership has now kowtowed people like Hannah who's openly anti semitic worship. It's leave who's the same what happened. Democratic Party and Kennedy moved back toward a more pro Israel direction. I don't know about that. We do better job. I don't know if you do one hundred percents, what's happened American European Asian of the American west, the Corbin ization of the American left and some of the same prophecies in the same sort of means, tropes, that we see in the European your left, just a hatred for Israel, and the alliance between the European left and radical Islam. We see this now evolved in the United States as well. And it's the outcome of many long. In the nineteen sixties the radicalization of campuses, and it's something on Sunday, mental misconceptions and lies in many ways is much more progressive country than the United States, America's, I've now finished four years in the Knesset, and I'll tell you, we had debates in the committee. That would never take place in the congress. Much more progressive abortions not an issue here. For example, a small ones and Israel was ahead of the game. I'm gay rights while before United States we never had don't ask don't tell them this country. So, you know, expect on on and, and the American left is making alliances with people who consider him example, homosexuality offense. We haven't seven Tel Tel-Aviv. We have a Palestinian gay community here, who's refuge in the state of Israel. Because if they go back to the Palestinian, Eric Tories, if the American left much you'll be killed killed there. No women's rights there. No sexual freedom really. And, and. So that alliance between the American last and radical Islam. Is based on a gross distortion of reality and a fundamental misunderstanding? What state of Israel's about ambassador? Mike lauren. Thanks for joining the program really appreciate your time his two most recent books six days before June, nineteen sixty seven in the making of the modern Middle East, which is a great read for Jerusalem Day. And also power, faith and fantasy America in the Middle East seventeen seventy six to the present. Mike, much running the show. Really appreciate it, sir. Thank you. Bring.

And it's not about you know. It's not about winning. But what it's about? It's not giving up. If you have a dream fight for it. There's a disciplined for passion. And it's not about how many times you get rejected or but you fall down on your beaten up. It's about how many times you stand up and our brave and you keep on going. Thank you. Okay. It's like, oh, bizarro idol. Is this getting to? I don't know. I don't think it's ever gonna happen. I mean, if you make the idols so much that they look handmade where the contestants can then well photocopy them. So if we had Dr Mike, Lauren Rimmer like shell with a frigging string, right, right. It's like who's to say, like, maybe we need to go back to bar code island where we need. We need the real survivor. Typically, we'd like a little hologram on there to show. Okay. This is an authentic, like a base sports memorabilia. Anybody has like a baseball. Oh, this was signed by John rocker. This baseball like, oh, really? Well, where's the hologram? If Shera me where to go to bark? I sorry, if Alex were to go to barcode island and take his voting parchment, and it read germy. Yes. Would that would that would that pan out? Would he confirm or deny there? We don't know. It seemed like he was nine votes to one. He put down Jeremy, the guys Barco, it confirmed it on that note, Matthew m. sent us a tweet with the tribe swap coming up with uneven tribes or one person left out. Will they go to kiosk island? What's your prediction slash twist advantage for the potential left out person. Okay. So the swap is coming up, right? Do you think that they are going to do to tribes and then somebody is going to be going to barcode islands? They could be better. Take that germy vote still upset about that, but went through what I'm talking about. Alexander up is vote and it said germy not Jeremy. Germy how you spell that. J. e. r. m. e. y. okay. Well, I mean, Alec is probably not Alec it. Why would you say Alison, Alex? Okay. So am I. Alex. Oh, we'll take both names the Barco. We'll figure that out. We'll figure it out. So do you think that we will send somebody to some sort of bar code island ghost, island, redemption island rep, Sean exile island to a boat with Cochran, right? Yeah, I don't know. I see. This is this is a no question. I can't think that far in advance. Yeah. What do you think they're going to split it evenly and have some loan? This thing that's free agent didn't kicking around in my mind is. They hear about kickers. Yes, thanks maybe is is being not going to be okay, and then we'll we well, we have an even number by the time we get to the tribe swamp. "That realizes oh if we go into the merge there's more of us should they either get rid of their weakest link or do something to sort of just avoid going into the merge with that perception we have the most numbers from our original group it's a fair question i don't know that you can make a hard and fast rule when it comes to this because i think that the other other players would look at that group and say all they they can't be a unified five like they're they've been mixed up they've been working with us and they probably never got a chance to even task their line so how can they really rely on their five when we've tested are lines are when we know that that we are strong in terms of our our grouping so i don't know i i think that in in this particular case it is a little difficult that they thought while we have five and we'll pull in two and then we'll be will be we'll be sad and the thing is i'm not sure that that's why ultimately the votes went the way they wet it's hard to say what the episode presented to us was that ben didn't trust coal and that ban and war in as the swing votes lauren wanted to work with dr mike lauren liked the healers there was a good on fair that was formed in that ben had thought that that might not be the worst thing either so i didn't hear from the votes that actually matter from and lord that it was because strictly because of the numbers why they voted so it's hard to say in this particular case if there had been one or two less dealers with the with the group dynamics have shifted that significantly it sounded like the problem was specifically with coal and with coal and jessica as a pair and that was something that ben had a problem with and ben dinh why can ben didn't trust work were moving forward i dunno was that do you think that there that less healers in this case would have changed that dynamic at all i'm not exactly sure but it seems like that we there was talk about the five healers from both sides sell i think they definitely did make it sort of like a flashing yellow target for everybody to go after yeah bennest.
