Listeners if you haven't seen the highlights pause this podcast call up the Blue Jays highlights from last night in to see something like you've never seen before it's. If, you can imagine a shorter maybe larger Pablo Sandoval plan catcher and going four for four and hitting home runs. I mean unbelievable. He's listed five eight to sixty five physically reminds me we you know you're trying to come up with the copper there were Sandoval Mike. was maybe being older Benjie Molina not young. But Older Benjie Molina and you could see the way runs. He's not ever going to be the Swiss guy. But part of the reason why I mean forget the you know the size and the shape. See Guy he's a right handed hitter. You do not see hitters in two, thousand, twenty hit the ball to right field away. He does that was I think. It's were to right field right including the home. Look. It's a he's a remarkable story for starters what he's only twenty one yet. Yes. Played above class say he can hit the bat looks legit. He walked more than he struck out in the minors last year and yeah, the Blue Jays have gotten dope production from their catchers this year. So can he play in the play offs I dunno buster yes. I mean you know who knows when we actually get there but you know when we reach this time of year teams, they don't really care what's in the back your baseball card they they don't really care when you were drafted or you know how much money they paid you. "Time to slow down a little your. Time now. More, than pursue it was it was much I. It's still nice but I'm definitely. At a point now where? Be going, to bed. At like. I'm in like some. Like nine thirty. Every night I've only going to bed. So early every night so very well rested the first time in a long time. So now I'm like h Tina. Traveling, place I'm I'm ready but. All the time. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Man I mean maybe as a way to get into it, I wanted to ask you about this because you're one of the few people I've talked to WHO's actually had this experience you did at least one of those drive in shows, right? Yeah I did one in. It's not technically Charlotte but it's called the fountain. Outside a Shar like. Forty five minutes as a shirt. That I mean walk me through that experience because I'm I'm so curious what it actually felt like to play one of those shows, right? Well, you know it's interesting because. I feel like. Every. Time. They're still I guess every week or so. The climate surrounding. Coronavirus or country or if you wanna Mike. Rugged down to what we do in music. History. Shows and safety every week or every couple of waste seems like there's a different. Tone to. The overall consensus of. Or what's not or what's what's what's considered okay, and what's not considered okay. So at the time of Accepting the drive in at the very beginning of the pandemic but that's Close closer to beginnings. He's ideas started coming on board around and I was like well only if it's safe and. assured was assured it was going to be running with all the precautions. needed. Sauza guy let's do it At least could say I did warn in my lifetime looking back on this and. The entire experience break down it was so. So. Interesting. But it was also really great on the road team. Have that one little sense of normalcy for the back with that family right? Because that's family were disconnected from right now. Yeah. Dude I. I feel like normally I spend majority of my year with these guys in the it's the first time I've seen him since probably February which was pretty wild. You're the show was It was it was interesting was very I know there's been a lot of mixture of us in a lot of controversy and a lot of different viewpoints on the drive in but my experience I can only speak it test mice during read. The people that were vice show of. It was. It was extremely safe I got there and Obviously it's. It's a it's an interesting way out stage is not normal stage, but you look out there near. Plot of land. It's massive view. It's actually in a beautiful area north. Carolina was palm land in your ads they will drive in the middle of nowhere. You know when he started when we got there for the show We had a little green room of whatever you WANNA, call it like the bandages office. Entire thing I'm looking at this? This is insane like hundreds and hundreds of cars, but all all within their confined space. And I was like nervous. We'll see our kids gonNA like. Kids. Tend to break rules Orlean at our bend the rules. Like a follow them until they get into an arcade screw, we're going to go your own thing. What I notice was everyone was actually like. Inner areas tailgating in their own area so We weren't like. Johnny not allowed to drive a students staged way to walk to the stage, which is totally GUAC panacea at all but I walk through these cars everyone like in their own spot hanging out with a small group of people everyone had their masks which I was nervous as. I. Don't want to be one of those things where. Everyone's in their mask and everyone's raging I'm like, please please please everyone is saw. A FROM MY CO engine stage wearing their masks surprisingly a lot of people were. Staying in their cars with all the tour shut listening to the music raging. That's interesting. That's kind of why were they was it on like a like an FM. Station people to so this was this was this was one of those ones amodio station June into classic drive in situation and A. was kind of interesting about the layout was we had a stage in its smaller stage. It wasn't a big festival Susan that. Was Cool. Is Right next to the right of. The movie was the wall movie projector. Only thing is like hundred tall was thing is. The biggest movie screen of. The had alive live streaming camera angle couple of angles of the media Jank from booth cameras hooked up there were projecting like live casting off the big screen and they had that makes in with I brought my vj. So he was able to to display my content. On this really cool large movie screen mixed into my live cam feed and. It was really cool. It was like I've never seen anything like that for a show like scream out large. That pretty interesting show itself. it's it's weird because we had my own borders. So they were like festivals don't monitor so loud for me on like a normal joe for me,

Is Mitch McConnell Rigging The Game?

"Other news, there's the other branch of Congress or the other house. Of Congress. The Senate and everyone knows their Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell is unshakable and ruthless, and he's going to maximize his power however cam, but it is also the case the death of Justice Ruth Bader GINSBURG has taken us to uncharted territory. There are very real political pressures that are going to affect how the next several months play out. Mitch McConnell does not care about being charged with the Crisi but the raw politics of this moment themselves are not uncomplicated. As it was with the affordable care act remember Mitch McConnell had a lot of bravado about that and he failed famously and humiliatingly to replace the law. Here's mayor discuss across pressures. He faces longtime McConnell Allah Gist Jane Mayer Chief of Washington correspondent New Yorker wrote an incredibly insightful profile McConnell back in April this weekend row quote from Mitch McConnell keeping a Senate. Majority matters more than the Supreme Court. Jamie. It's great to have. Let's start with that because it seems to me there's two imperatives here. Everyone says about McConnell the two things he cares about is keeping the Senate majority and being Senate majority leader. Judges the Federal Bench, and there is a way to interpret the politics of the moment that there's a little bit attention between those two imperatives. How do you see it? Well, I mean there is I mean he wants to get obvious wants to hold the majority wants to stay being majority leader. And, this is going to be the crowning moment of his career to have yet one more justice on Supreme Court here we can get him through and he's promised trump of course that he's going to have a vote on this, and so how do you do this the problem? The problem for McConnell is it's unclear if he can keep the majority in the Senate. It's a dicey election year for him. There are a number of racist. They're very close and he doesn't want to do anything that's going to hurt the endangered members of his caucus. So he's got to try to juggle the schedule in some way that doesn't put those members on the spot in a way that will hurt them. So he's the first thing he's going to do an, and surely his done is canvas. Those members find out exactly how they feel about how this this process would affect their races. And then, and then way that in terms of whether it be better have a vote before or after the election. So. It's it's. It's. It's it's tricky but he is nothing if not clever about things like this this is he he? Very early on in his career, he ran for office from a district where he hadn't been resident in residence long enough and he vowed after that, he would never again ignore the rules, and since then he's become kind of a master of the rules, the more arcane the better. And he just he loves talking to the parliamentarian in the Senate and figuring out sort of the the most devious ways to get what he wants. The most sort of obvious pressure here. Just talking about this and I think it's pretty interesting. There's a bunch of folks who are up. In who are imperilled where it's not clear That going ahead with this would be helpful them. We have a bunch of pulling out today showing majority of people oppose it. Those numbers will probably change as they converge towards the polarization and everything else. But like Cory Gardner is down in all the polls and Colorado, he's in a state that Democrats have carried. Now a bunch and plan to carry again Martha. mcsally sally is down a to mark Kelly. You know they're on the sort of aggressor side here in terms of public opinion. It does seem like they've kind of don't care. It doesn't seem like there's a jump together mentality here in terms of getting them to come out whether it was him or not a publicly for those. Well I think. He's GonNa. Be Looking at McConnell will look at each of these races and I think you can almost imagine that he's written off. Gardner in. Colorado, and makes out the in Arizona. So he's not going to change his plan just for them unless he thinks it's going to save them and you'd probably thinks it won't save them and he's already given collins kind of buy in Maine. So it gets you down to the racist that are really going to matter in this are probably it's it's probably Tillis in North Carolina, Joni Ernst in Iowa, and Danes in in Montana, and if McConnell feels that those three or not endangered by going head, he may just gun it. You know and and try try to get I think though that in addition to just thinking about each of these races and how it affects each of the races, there's something else. He's probably got to think about, which is the overall look of this thing if if it appears to the American public that he is one set of rules for Democrats and there's another set of rules he's got for Republicans here, one Senate rules for America and another set of rules for whoever trump nominates at this point, it looks like he's reading the game it looks corrupt. It looks like a naked power, grab an and it's ugly and that could actually create a backlash I think that both he and trump have to think about. It it might really bother a lot of people in this country to think that that it's it's just too corrupt game in Washington. Yeah, I. think that's a correct reading of both where the polls are and the political risks they run and I think it's notable that McConnell has committed to vote but not win and I thought. This was also notable. He wrote this dear colleague later re basically says I don't say anything don't lock yourself into position. Let it give it give us time to work over the coming days. We're GONNA come under tremendous pressure from the press to announce how he will handle the coming nomination for those who are unsure how to answer for those inclined to oppose giving nominee a vote I urge you all to keep your powder dry Dombrowski and collins. Have not heeded that but Mitt Romney said declined today saying anything I know Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania I fully expect will support moving forward. But that that to me, it was interesting because the timing here and the sort of needle to thread is not nothing I think we'll try to do it and the odds are in their favor they will. But because of exactly what you and unseeded from the political standpoint, it's not clear that this is help for them politically in the short term. I think it may not be I. Mean I think also it's going to energize the base on both sides here for and the thing is that when it comes to the energizing the base, the base that needs more energizing really is probably on the Democratic side and you've already seen it happen I, mean look at the amount of money that act Lou raise you know practically overnight a hundred, million dollars two, hundred and sixty. Now it's one hundred and sixty million dollars. Shipping shocking about money. Shocking money an and I think the other thing that it might do is from was doing some reporting two days. I think it may really energize kids younger voters because. You know they were kind of holding their nose, a lot of them about Joe Biden it wasn't an exciting. It didn't seem you now like there was that much reason to do it. Now there's a reason that a lot of young people are GONNA see they're gonNA look they're gonNa see Roe v Wade is in the balance they're going to see a four Bul healthcare act and possibly anything to do with insurance for preexisting conditions and they're looking at the future this is going to. Their. Lives for the this is a this is a decision that has tremendous implications for everybody in the country and it's GonNa be clear and so I, you know it may turn you know help turn out. The Democrats who were young. Six three Roberts court climate. Regulation jurisprudence. A. Favorable to the kinds of solutions. That are necessary. Do you think? Ultimately McConnell himself is up and I don't think he's. He's personally a lot of trouble against say, McGrath at least the pulling now but there are also just a bunch of seats that weren't supposed to be in play that really do seem like they are. There's A Texas poll that has cornyn barely up. There's a Mississippi poll out today that has. Chrissy Hyde Smith a just a few points on Mike espey. There's the Iwa Joni Ernst race I mean it's wild how wide the sort of battlefield has gotten for him to try to hold this thing together. It's it's really volatile and and and the thing is it. What it does is it puts the Republicans on the spot about they've been doing kind of a split that's broader and broader that gotta keep the trump face and and but that's not enough for in many places to get reelected, and so they've got to do is add in. The moderates the you know suburban women particularly and got a candidate here who for a nominee for the supreme court that is truly the choice of the evangelical part of the trump ace it by very much alienate moderate women in the suburbs and in other places especially over things like abortion where sixty two percent of the people in this country saver. Abortion. As keeping it legal and don't WanNa go backwards. So it's it's. It's I think it's a it's it's a it's a it's a risky thing for some ways. You people think it's all into such a gift. Not, necessarily think that's right. Read on the situation Jane Mayer thanks as always great reporting and inside appreciate it. Great to be with you.

So maybe you can start by ten the listeners just a bit about you where you're located what you're up to right now and we can take it from there I like in in. Sorry in the UK. Head. Coach at sint George Hill Lawn. Tennis, Club it's a club that's one hundred, seven years old. So it's been there a long time. We've got about four thousand members pretty busy range of colts etc and doubles is pretty is pretty busy throughout the club. Okay. So four thousand members stats that's a lot of members a day. How many more active now so that membership split between different tasks gotTa Health and Fitness Section, we got obviously tennis and we've got a pool of we've got some squash as well about two thousand play play tennis including a genius Sir Pretty Busy sets up we've got the. And how many courts you have? We've got thirty three courts. The mixture of different surfaces indoors grass at different of official clay. So we've got a full range on ice and your head coach there. Yet on the head coach because the team of twelve coaches coaches right busy at the club especially now with people coming out of lockdown tennis being such a good thing to do with social distancing etcetera have to tennis numbers gone up since this time last year the participation has yet a court really busy from. Morning till night with lots of people working from home. And a sneaking out lunchtime for Gamete friends search it. It's pretty busy. And tell me you're also dope coach of too great. Jamie Murray near Skopje Fest? Round and which obviously J. me was was one of John's previous partners and then yesterday that a came through fourteen twelve in the final set breaker against John's partner from last year, which was Henry Continent finished guy. At the top level, they're all playing people they've played before, which must make. It's so interesting. How, from how do you coach or head of players deal with known that the other guy knows all their secrets are patrons may be a better word yet it's good. Yeah. Lots of players play with with certain patterns in they do specific things at certain times. So it's it's know we speak regularly before the matches. Go through what the opponents, what we might expect them to do what they did against them last time if they did it against the lost time and it was successful low probably good again, if if they didn't work than the opponent will change it. So we've got to be prepared for things to change and it might change through the course match nobody plays exactly the same way all the time

Who Does the Cooking for Cooking Shows?

"A smartly dressed woman sunlit kitchen gushes about her love of ricotta cheese as she blithely scoops ingredients including the cheese into a skillet warming on the stove she ticks through the dishes. She'll prepare today right before your Eyes Warm Rubella Salad with Walnuts Baked Ziti with butternut squash and desert a simple yet decadent twelve crisp layered with raspberry compote and Marse. Capone. Her thirty minute cooking show is one of your favorites and for a moment you consider recreating this exact meal at home. But Mike most things made for TV. The delectable spread has a secret ingredient. You probably don't have on hand dozens of behind the scene hands that crap and stir proverbial pot. Traditionally all the cooking shows you'll see on TV begin with onsite chefs who prep food in advance sometimes as many as twenty people will chop whisk and season ingredients in a full service kitchen before a cooking show is recorded. The Food Network Kitchen. For example, has included five separate kitchens that each has stove oven sink and refrigerator. That way chefs can prepare food for several cooking shows in advance. These prep kitchens as well as the made for TV, kitchens on some cooking shows require fully stocked pantries to. A for example, competition cooking shows alike, my personal favorite iron chef may require pantries with hundreds of items for each participant. Iron Chef America stocked two hundred fifty items per chef including nine types of flour seven vinegars and five kinds of salt as well as thirty types of herbs and spices. Along with having the right ingredients on hand chefs, an off camera kitchens prepare swap outs which are dishes at various stages of completion. The can be used during a cooking show the next time you watch an instructional cooking show. Note the carefully orchestrated actions in specific segments, introduction preparation of ingredients, stove, top cooking seasoning, adding extra ingredients to the dish and plating. Dealing any of these segments you're likely to see the work of people in an off camera kitchen. Of course, even with all this help, it doesn't necessarily mean that the host of a cooking show has it easy. Especially, if they're recording with a live audience, the host still needs to cook and speak to the audience often while producer communicates by phone and Studio Director gives silent instructions from the floor. Cooking competition shows can be a challenge for the contestants to although perhaps not in the same way. Take Food Network's chopped. For example, a contestant on this show are tasked with creating edible dishes from a basket of mystery ingredients, and it can take up to twelve hours to film a single episode. Often. Contestants aren't even cooking. They're being asked the same on-camera questions again or waiting for the judge's decisions. Whatever the format instructional competition or a hybrid of both understanding the way a cooking show works has a lot to do with uncovering what's going on behind the scenes. There's simply some things you can't fully understand by watching the end result.

"In she just text it's great great easy simple way to get involved in the show I you know Mike it's been sort of a heavy Newsday a typical for a Friday Fridays generally are pretty pretty light and fun but there's a lot of heavy stuff that we have to talk about today so why not why not talk about distractions specifically what are the things that you and I are doing to to chill out to distract ourselves from from all of this news that's that's happening yeah I mean for for me I mean that I got a I've got to be just disciplined about making my distractions actual distractions because I tend to have a lot of bleed into what we do on air those tend to be a lot of the medically lot of the podcast that I follow so I find myself at times like really looking for to listen to the podcast unlisted real has covering the same spot and not it's sometimes a better and different or more nuanced way whatever whichever way but none the less I've been you know marinating in that topic all week and then I'll try and relax the podcast relies well that didn't help and it's and it's kind of hijacked in some ways all of my other favorite podcast aren't fundamentally news podcasts This American Life like a lot of podcast that I would normally listen to our escape in have become very focused on the the pandemic in the effects of the pandemic from economic to health to social and so I've had this sort of like dig deeper in one of the ones that actually finds a nice escape although it's escape into something kind of awful is I mean awful at least in terms of you look at the actual human cost is war stories but it's is really dynamite to buy a couple of a guy named Aiden who is a military writer a guy named caused by angry staff officer was a former infantryman it is still a member of the Army National Guard and also a military writer these two do a podcast and they essentially break down major battles or skirmishes in in war history not just United States but pre United States early enough from Alexander the great power and it's fascinating because they talk about tactically how when when somebody would make a big shift in tactics how other people sort of recognizing it and it would change the in no different way than than you see disruptions in the tech community it happened in fighting as well and how technology would suddenly suddenly swinging advantage one direction to one particular group of people and then I'm more technology or tactics with swing in advance to another way and it is really great it's a really great history lesson which I dig anyway but it's also this very it's for a very specifically focused history lesson I'm not exactly a military history buff but the stories are well told these two people have a really good dynamic and I find that I completely forget everything else when I'm listening to it because it creates you like you make a very vivid picture in your head and the heart of the whole escape process is to replace the movie that's running in your head with a different right yeah yeah I've been well I I've been doing a few different things podcast is definitely one of them I I tend to I tend to really like weird comedy podcast so there's a couple like deb but man is for bonanza which is its impact I don't even know how to explain it a comedian named Andy Daly he he's an improviser as well he plays this character named Dalton Wilcox is the poet laureate of the west and he originated this character on a different show years ago right and this is sort of a spin off what kind of how mark landed on Happy Days gave him his own show this is that except that he and his his crew go through each episode of bonanza and the joke being there are I think like four hundred and thirty one or two episodes of bonanza right and it's just it's bizarre it's weird it's nonsense they they get to the show sort of toward the end but that's all about the preamble right and all that business I really like that a lot there's also one called twenty thousand hertz which I've talked about before you have it now and that's when I actually put on my list after you talked about the last time it's it's a really fantastic it's so well produced it's done by these guys who are basically sound engineers they make sounds for a living right and they tell the stories behind the world's most recognizable sounds and sometimes it's it's really deep and really informative sometimes it's weird their latest one is basically about why why do we think farts are funny when they talk about the whoopee cushion a lot it's just it's it's a trip that sounds like when I would take yeah it's it's a great show twenty thousand hertz if you spell it out right now so what else you doing other than less to say to get out of podcasts I'm playing a lot of animal crossing like apparently the rest of the world it is it's just a delight full pointless exercise and call right you know you without without even the the scandal of like sim city or anything like that right there is sort of just like as Brian as it gets totally you're the worst thing that can happen to you is you get stung by wasps and then you have to go get some medicine and take some medicine then you're fine or you get a what about murder Hornets all we'll see they're what they updated all the time how we are approaching summer you know it's it's done in real time so their seasons so there's only you can only catch certain fish a certain time of year or certain time of day or in a certain location given sort of the theme of animal crossing my guess is it's going to be maybe attempted assault Hornets it's not really good right right there is no real hazard right right it's an easy for your everyone irritation Hornets or something like that yeah it's yes it's a it's basically a game for children right now it's better but but this the sky's the limit I mean I can do you can do so much with that that's been really fun yeah for me weirdly enough like like I find great satisfaction and I don't know why because I don't than maintain the status but I find great satisfaction in organizing stuff and I'm don't know what I think would look at me is a terribly organized person although I've managed to keep a lot of balls in the air and most the time I don't drop many of them but I'd like the process of completely like emptying out everything in the dresser finding stuff that's got to go to goodwill like clearing out space because I find that if I can keep the space to put things organized I'm pretty good at putting things away I always put tools away I was raised in that sort of my dad's shop in my brother's shop you always had to put like the screw drivers back in the screwdriver tore specifically categorize like that kind of thing and so I'm good about that generally speaking but I find that when I as soon as I lose that regular place to put something I it all starts falling apart every rapidly yes I'm the same way and things go all over the place and I did actually get a good tip about where you should when you are reorganizing where you should put things in this is kind of interesting idea that you should put if you lose things and you find it find something that you've lost a tool that you need or something that you need and you looked all over and he finally find find it where you should store it is the first place you look for it that's a great idea right right pretty good idea of where it should be because that's where it should be yeah I mean like that yeah I know I thought that that was I heard that on a really interesting and a different podcast get a free economics which is my one of my favorite podcasts as a guy who's the editor wired magazine and he had these like tips for living is like thirty died of him and they were all very smart but that one sort of range would be like well of course just build it backwards yeah I know right yeah well I yeah that's wonderful now I'm also watching there's a there's a TV show on now that's in its second season third season I should know this what we do in the shadows it's the strangest most hilarious take on vampires I'm not a big vampire guy right but my god is this show funny it is the these vampires they live in Americanism it's based off of the movie of the same name what we do in the shadows that's from New Zealand and the story is of these vampires who have been living in Staten Island for centuries and they were a were originally sent here to like take over North America right they got lazy and they haven't done anything and it's it's shot of Rory's in every ancillary characters hilarious people show up for one episode a lot of times it's just it's it's I'm going all out of the park we're allowed which platforms it's on Hulu if you hang you can watch it they don't have Hulu so FX show yeah yeah that's it that's it yeah all right well runtime we're gonna have to revisit this because I can I like that I liked I liked it also gave us quite literally it's gets very matter because gave us a distraction from what we've been talking about as well just to have a talk about distraction it's true it's true more Karen I.

"Say that I you know I I don't know how many years will be left but I don't I don't so I don't see and like I said working from home certainly makes a difference I would say it's a different world being at home Mike it's completely that's a very different world and I and I have to be honest with you because I do want to be honest with you and I want to be honest with everybody listening I woke up this morning I wasn't feeling well and nowadays you wake up and you don't feel well you give it a million thoughts and know my throat was sore and had a little bit of a fever all the symptoms of everything and so out of an abundance of caution you've heard that term a live audience a boat I've been locked away from my family for the last twelve hours because you know I've been to in test I don't know if I've got any better now you know what bro I gotta tell you I actually do turning on the microphone and talking about sports with you actually do feel a little bit better doesn't mean I you know this nothing wrong with me but because I sometimes I I wanted and not that I feel I feel good I gotta say thank god I feel I feel good but sometimes I wonder you know you you know mentally yes almost ought to like you know Joe it within a medically you make yourself they think you're sick the only sold you are so right and trust me I thought about that this morning when I felt that that it's a matter of right right I see us talking to some of the heaven do you really feel like it's mental right now I I genuinely did unfortunately so I've been I've been locked away from my family for the last twelve hours basically the good news for you as far as is that is that you know really it's at least where you you know hearing what they say you're not at the risk that somebody my age or above would be at no absolutely as far as any kind of god's got to bid for talent you would be concerned no that's how will you know that I think that's been pretty well documented out there yeah but that you're a hundred percent right that's why I like in my brain I wasn't concerned about myself as much as I was concerned about my in laws that live with me and my wife so that's a part of why I've kinda caved out a location and housing right now only get it boy I'm sure every I'm sure there are a lot of people listening right now but over the last few days woke up you're not feeling great work and normally do you know me when I don't feel great okay okay take a Tylenol let's go I'm fine with you but I always ready to play with pain of course yeah like let's go but I think because of everything we've learned and know about you just have to be extra careful not only for yourself but for everybody around you yep so that means they'll be about five more classic games I'll be watching tonight because I'll be stored away by myself so all right all right I'll let everybody know what it is let's go to Jason in Montgomery which have Jason Jason how are you your order what's up yes October Salam you bro not much yeah like J. O. I. I think you you're you're now that Robby Anderson says Abbas you gotta get back I re signed and all of my other point was I I just read a report on now yes the on the Broncos released Joe Flacco so would would you actually bring Joe Flacco back up for Sam Darnold and he's a bit you know if you yeah I mean I don't know what kind of what's the money situation would be but I mean you know you certainly would be a decent guide advise your backup quarterback also the question I have and it's funny because we were talking a Joe Flacco yesterday we're trying to remind ourselves the Bronco quarterback situation drew lock obviously right well before I finally came in and the Flacco experiment in Denver didn't work but you wonder about Joe Flacco if he wants to keep going especially if his career now is as a backup quarterback is thirty five years old a lot of money got a super ball already yeah these guys won this championship we're referring to him yesterday because we're talking how Sanchez beat manning and Brady back to back on the road in the playoffs and Flacco was done that too he has that on his resume yeah but if you're Joe Flacco right now would you want to be the backup to Sam Darnold or anyone else I don't know you hit on the head the overall I mean you know he would there's not a lot of quarter but you know you got some some pretty big name guys are available starting quarterbacks in this league cam Newton in the Dalton James Winston and there's not a lot of teams looking for quarterbacks right now exactly if you think about it won't go through all teams in this league and say could they use all the names you mention James Winston Cameron and Andy Dalton Joe Flacco and by the way Joe Flacco is last on that list let's get perfectly I don't know not a Joe Flacco's last on that list I would agree with you on a percent right how many spots are really available to be a starting quarterback in this league is a back up sure why not right I mean look to answer his question yeah if Joe Flacco said I want to be a backup I'm cool with it why wouldn't I sorry no I'm not could agree more solid as well as good a backup as you could probably have to be honest with you but but what but what it comes down to is is that really something he would want to do right at this point in his career I don't know I mean Joe Flacco's thirty five years old and needs to be able to sign if you thought was a backup quarterback I mean you know you have to look at that guy knows who knows what the what how that situation is going to play itself out yeah at some point we can go through the teams that could use a quarterback I don't as a starter not as about right because I think it's a back up sure you should use a good backup sure and you don't miss a pay as your backup sure of course I know what the why not but when you go through the league is not a long list especially if you're going to believe that the charges are gonna go with Tyrod Taylor that's I thought right now that they may draft a quarterback which they probably will but for now Tyrod Taylor is going to be their starter and they're not gonna be that interested in bringing in one of those veterans we mention right we'll get to that is a show rolls on to mention Chris busy now covers the giants for giants inside will join us at three o'clock our weekly chat with Jon Heyman a little bit later on as well but I'm going Roberts here in the afternoon on this Thursday attention.

"As I understand if I do I'm in that age group where I can take some security at sixty six right and I understand if I if I'm still working my soul security benefit will be reduced right is there a way to calculate how much it's going to be reduced there are my cell is that a percentage of my yearly grocer Mike it's run it's roughly well I should pack up your right it's confusing and in fact you said a couple of things anecdotally that we're not quite accurate so let's just set the record straight social security as important as it is as wonderful as it is is extraordinarily and in my view unnecessarily complicated you pay into the system for your entire working career you reach you give an age of start to receive benefits a lot to be that simple and easy but Hey it's a government program and therefore nothing simple and easy here's what it comes down to you're allowed to begin receiving retirement benefits starting at age sixty two you don't have to wait until you're sixty five or sixty six you can start at sixty two yeah what you understand that but you'll receive less as you know and so the longer you delay the start of benefits the higher the benefit will be once you do start there's an important phrase in social security circles called F. R. A. full retirement age at your full retirement age which is roughly age sixty six for most working Americans that sixty six in a few months and so on depending on your actual birthday starting at run eight sixty six your full retirement age you get your full one hundred percent of your social security benefits if you start to benefits prior to that you get less than the full benefit if you delay you get more than the full benefit if you wait until you're seventy you'll actually get a hundred and thirty percent of your benefits so instead of getting a dollar you get a Buck thirty if you wait eight seventy so the real question is when should I start should I take it starting at sixty two even though it's less but sooner or do I wait till I'm seventy which is more but it's later part of the implication our taxes under the rules if you're still working prior to your full retirement age you will lose a lot of the income to taxes after your full retirement age that doesn't apply so it certainly makes sense for you if you don't really need the money and it sounds like you don't because you're still working that you should in fact delay which is what you've been doing so far and I would recommend you continue delaying until you do in fact quit working okay so completely stopped working and then take it then or eight seven ever comes first because after a seven day your benefit won't keep growing by delaying so you might as well take it starting at eight seventy right yeah and I printed out Michael security statement and I see what it is that sixty six and it's a percent every year up right age seventy right but I also know that if I wasn't working if I stop working at sixty six but still the lady at say one year till sixty seven to get that extra eight percent right it takes twelve I have under the mat it takes twelve and half years to break even on missing that first year of payments yes so the real question for you is how long you're going to live do you think you're going to live beyond age seventy five well that's the real crystal hold everybody wishes they had how's your health a good and what your family history how long my parents nineties mom my mom died at seventy unfortunately but my dad's ninety one is still going may I ask what was your mother's cause of death it well it was complications due to Parkinson's sepsis is but that's because it she just became invalid got it the reason I ask is that many of the illnesses that have caused people to die in the past have already been cured and many others will be cured by the time you reach those advanced ages you know heart disease respiratory illness cancers themselves and so on so if your dad's already is still alive in his nineties and you're in good health today I think you can anticipate with a reasonable degree of confidence that you're going to live well beyond seventy five or eighty years of age meaning it's worth the one year wait to get the higher benefit because in your eighties and nineties you'll be the beneficiary of a higher income thanks to the one year wait okay so just to recap then if I took it before sixty six there's heavy taxes on it but from sixty six on there are no taxes that's correct prior to sixty six about half of your benefit will be subject to taxes after your full retirement age that goes away even if I'm still working correct okay so all right well you you know I've everything I've read on this and I'd never heard or never read something that said that so once again this is just so thoroughly confusing well it isn't even all in even gets more confusing than that because of the fact that you're married did your wife work she did up until she retired many many years ago and she collecting social security benefits she is not she just turned sixty five in August so we're gonna takers next year so the question will Hearst be reduced five I'm working and she's not now but here here's the real question might it be possible that she would get a higher benefit as your spouse then based on her own work record I looked at that and where she could take a fifty percent of mine now and noted that the answer is no hers would be more than fifty percent and that's really the case that many people don't realize that spousal benefits are often higher than the worker benefits so there's an implication for spouses there's also an application depending on the age disparity between the husband and the wife doesn't sound like your racist verities all that significant yeah yeah I I look into that and you know if we were ten years apart she was ten years younger than me then it would be best that she went ahead and took it Neil up to fifty percent of mine exact no she's actually too much older than me and then there are other issues if there's a divorce which doesn't seem to apply to you other other issues if there's a way to which doesn't apply to you there are other issues if there are children under the age of sixteen are there no one dollar thirty years old so this just demonstrates the incredible complexity and why the answer when should I take social security depends on all of these factors are you still working how long do you think you're going to live are you married what's the age difference between you and your spouse how much income are you earning how much income is your spouse earning or their children under sixteen is there anybody with a disability either you or your spouse the list goes on on on the factors that affect the equation of helping us answer the question when should you start to receive social security benefits and it is not a one size fits all and that's why there's really no substitute for meeting with a financial adviser who can go through all of this in great detail for you to help make sure you're getting it right because as you know jam once you make the decision it's pretty much your reversible that's right yeah I got to get it right I live in with a forever yep yeah so I leased a week of sixty six and quite frankly the reason I'm still working is because of that reason generous for one K. plan of my work so I wanted to keep soccer as much as I can until I finally say okay that's enough and are you enjoying working yeah it's okay if you could give it up as well I could be okay therefore what we need to do is some financial planning calculations to determine do you have enough money saved between your four oh one K. and other savings and investments plus the income you'll get from social security is all of that enough to support you and your wife for as long as you and your wife are expected to live because of the answer to that is yes then there's no reason to keep working an extra year or two merely to increase the balance of the four oh one K. to produce income that is already sufficient to meet your lifestyle needs and you might as well just quit now enjoy yourselves now that is that is true so I would argue that you should meet with a financial adviser who can do some retirement planning calculations for you to test the theory how long do in fact you need to continue working you said you're going to do it for another year to win a concluding retire right now we may conclude you need to keep working on one or two more years with three or four more years okay in other words let's do the math okay that's great advice yeah I do I know this answer with the caller but there's a certain number that you you can figure out what how much you have any investments and what you can draw on it comfortably do not depleted and then you know be able to maintain your life so there's no particular name for it but the bottom line is we want to know that there's enough money in your piggy bank coupled with social security to provide you with retirement income for as long as the two of you are expected to live and we've got an office not far from Ventura California so we're happy to to help you and go through these calculations for you that's what we do is financial planners helping people realize based on where you're at based on how much money you've got how much money you're at continuing to save where that money is invested how long you're expected to live how much money you need on a monthly basis here's weighing you can retire it's either right now okay or it's never or somewhere in between not ready but great advice I really appreciate in chance to talk because this is just so confuse it is confusing all the more so for folks who have never dealt with before and yet we do it every single day and so we're pretty good at it you've dealt with it once and you're not as good as we are although you seem to have a pretty good handle on the stuff so you have that put you ahead of the curve so give us a call if we "Kill your Mike can we get it let's put a ticket in on that Mike I hear it do you hear that Mike it's driving me insane it's driving me bonkers three oh three seven one three eight two five five all right Colin will not on a let's go to a car question Linda what's going on in September I was backing might two thousand eight Lexus owners of the drive way and it suddenly accelerated and smashed into the neighbor's car across the street and bounced like a billiard ball come running it bounced back onto my lawn and hit three trees going sideways across the lawn and across the driveway miraculously I was fine I walked out of the car but the car was a rack oh my goodness what failed on the car you you you alluded to the fact that this was not you doing this now the brakes wouldn't work the steering wouldn't work it was like of a roller coaster ride at lake side only not one I wanted so what happened so I assume your insurance paid for whatever damage or what happened my insurance paid for the car damage and my neighbors car but nothing for it the landscape damage close it with my long hard and I did it I gotcha but I kept thinking how could this happen because I know what is striving to stop and steer the car is what do you think what did the people that repaired it what did they think happened now it why can't repair I would never get into this death trap again in the insurance company total they have a different car today look at it I mean did they try to figure out what happened well I kept thinking how could this happen and I remembered about thirty years ago there was this thing with all these suddenly accelerating yeah so I went online and sure enough Lexus recalled seven million all of my model car await Lexus are X. three fifty right now yes I do see that there are a few blogs are here we are describing almost identical with he was going through the steering wheel locks on the brakes don't work so what is what is Alexis say about it here's the problem no you don't even have the vehicle anymore that's the hard part you have nothing yet yeah my insurance company adjuster and Lexus has their own a jester and they have like the black box in the car in event data recorder and its proprietary software no one else can figure it out except they are engineers of course because it's their product but you can sue him and figure that out but I'm gonna go back to what I said before you don't have the car or the black box it's probably in a little break the size of it's probably been jumped already is my point out that there say they're insisting the car worked fine there's nothing wrong with this hearing nothing with the break I got to my fault Linda I understand wondering if there's a federal agency I could contact the deals with problems I'm gonna give you I'm gonna give you real advice after this break so you just hold tight okay I don't know if you're gonna like it or not actually you might like it but seriously I'm gonna give you real advice on this one is so hold tight three oh three seven one three eight two five five.

"You know if someone text your calls you they will receive a message going back saying i'm unavailable right now police guy will call you when i can or our tax you can try to take that the distraction so that you don't feel that you have to answer the tax because you're not going to know about it by that's a great tool we encourage everyone to to use that but once again mike it's gonna it's going to get back to education and you know you talked about you know most people aren't that on the road aren't drunk right so but the few that are caused the problems everybody in today's world is using their smartphone and they're using it constantly and i mentioned about all the new apps that come out more and more usage of it it's it's hard to put that down and so we have to use that tool to stop that are are what we're really doing is going out to try to educate them more and more the put it down because we will real we really want to see that kind of behavior change it is on the website and also you can go to your apps store and stuff like that downloaded from anything they could tell them not to do.

"More of a hit that was like middle school early high school yet and we were probably still stuck in our grunge phase for a little bit of that time but okay serve you the pig favorite to pox on what would you pick i tell you what i you know i only really liked the hits of two palk but if i picked one in this is one that i would recommend to anybody because i think this this song shows his talent you know like i said i'm not big into gangsta rap but uh it sets a white woman sweat it well yeah but i like dear momma by by two back and i'll tell you why because i think i think you could listed like any style of music in still like that song like even if you didn't like rap i think you could pick up that song it'd be like our i get this i like it is that good of us all wildest throne this out there and and i think the one of the hardest things to do is take a song and remake it and make it better than their original right mmhmm at one a in a a fabulous artists of very talented artists a bruce hornsby he had the song the way this red ana to park remade that and made it into changes uh yeah i personally think that to park song is better now mike it's mahape male for that but i think he took a song to the next level and i think what he's saying is very socially relevant today as much as it was back then another song that is socially relevant probably today to is a keep your head up that's an are one that each check out if you're not familiar with his work but we'll get right back to that after this quick beer break.
