"That said I'll talk to you on the other side of the music you're listening to Chicago speaks and we appreciate your understanding in this matter try station Hey Jamie this is one twelve Q. Mike slim and run Saudi I heart radio station that if this we at the you the wait there will not this is the old C. I'm the man in the Big Bang okay right but it goes on and welcome back time check for you right now it's six twenty four and we are back flowing with Chicago speaks taking your calls but most importantly giving you a primer on the state's primary election and it's a pleasure to be joined right now by Jim Allen who is a spokesperson for the Chicago board of elections as well as the mire and Europe former mayoral candidate and an astute political commentator Jim I want to thank you for your patience there we are trying to provide the public with important information in terms of this upcoming election as I mentioned at the top of the newscast this morning or Chicago speaks two states Louisiana as well as Georgia decided to delay or postpone their primaries we decided not to and I would think it was a wise decision given the fact that it's only two days away what would you like to tell voters in Chicago land with regard to the primary election well there's there's so much first I want to thank you for having on the on the show and secondly we're so grateful that the voters of the city Chicago have been so patient with you whether its lines they've been very excited about participating in any way they can we set an all time record yes week on vote by mail applications and by all time record I mean we had more vote by mail applications that and then one we had a higher population and you know the number is incredible all yeah serving overseas our our parents and grandparents were in World War two that was the last time we had numbers approaching what we had this past week we extended the deadline to Thursday at midnight a number of wise voters picked up on that we had an incredible surge of re tweeting of information and we think that's why we had that twenty thousand rush on just on both by mail applications in that last day we process does Friday morning and we got those in the mail we've been working closely with the postal service since last December because of coronavirus but because we wanted to do a better job of of using the postal services intelligent mail barcodes on now our borders are not only able to attract their their own ballot coming to them but they they we give them a web page where they can track their dealers that web page information right now so that way people will be able to get that well what happens is after the person applies to vote by mail we send them an email and then they've got a link to their own individual with a contract the envelope comes home and that when they drop it in the mail that contracted back to the election board and what's important for all those hundred thousand five hundred and seventeen thousand eight hundred and thirteen dollars now is that if you want to get their ballot as long as they send it in before election day they're gonna be in good shape and we're using intelligent mail barcode so that on that envelope it passes the very first machine even if they don't post market we're gonna know when it was in the postal service's system secondly we've had an incredible number of people use of early voting for up about two percent compared to twenty sixteen and one side of all the concerns cell of yesterday was a big day we had seventeen thousand we have a list of sites that have much lower foot traffic so if you want to come downtown today to the loop super site it's going to be busy tomorrow because every dollar will return to work today we've got a hundred pieces of voting equipment solutions so the finals are open today all yes all of that so that's important information all of our early voting sites are open today from ten AM till we've extended it so that they're open till five PM all fifty states and no matter what's the best way to find this what's the best way to find the site that's near issue Jim Chicago elections dot gov you want to go to early voting okay and we've got all of our sites listed there keep in mind and work and we're gonna be highlighting later this morning which sites have the least trafficked first Sunday extras that if you're trying to avoid lines because there were people who waited in lines yesterday as long as an hour and what's interesting is that they didn't need any prompting or anything like that they were already practicing social distancing so that that queue had you know gaps in between people of five six feet you know given the circumstances are all for all dealing with right now and all the early voting sites are are you quick twitch hand disinfectant for our borders so we we have touch screens that we have a special high hi I'll call content yeah screen wipes that can write those down upon request we also have disinfectant wipes that we can use that surfaces this isn't yes this is a touch screen so you know you're you're you're gonna vote and then immediately well you'll have hand disinfectant available if you need that but again we had a big day yesterday with seventeen thousand exploding Saturday were open for another big day today but again I want to emphasize if you're looking to avoid a line she you want to go to the loop super site at Clark in lake and use that you're gonna be in and out of there you're gonna be impressed by how professional people are and how quickly you are going to be processed and in and out of there and then you can get on with your day and have your ballot cast and have it in the bank itself so very good Hey Jim I truly appreciate you can you hang on there apples we just talk about some of the information that is actually on the ballot with that in mind I want to turn our attention to a Myra and your former may oral candidate my word there is a lot that's on the ballot both with regard to federal state and local officials who are running what do you see as some of the most important elections aside of course from the top to which would be that for U. S. senator as well as presidential nominee sure no thank you for having me on and good morning to you Jim as well good morning my I would say that the thing I was pretty high and then the presidential primary between ten AM right in and thanks president senator thank you Mr president by dance at least in Illinois in the Chicago area we have the state's attorney's race with them very very acceded to say the last long one yes the NET crew surveys after quite some time when cook county state's attorney Kim five who is the incumbent and then you have I get the most widely known challenger at least at this point it seems to be kind of like a broken way so who is contending for that seat so that's definitely a I'll be the last don't also see the Illinois Supreme Court that's a very interesting there because you have a seat where one justice was appointed to the seat following the retirement of justice freedman and then now you have several people of color that are vying for the democratic nomination there and in essence you could have somebody from the other side in terms of the Republican nominee actually coming in and getting that C. sure and that's been a major issue in that race the idea is that they are convinced that jet sitting now instructed that novel and be a he's in the seat they the desire to have an African American in that seat however there are at least we are at least two additional African Americans and one Latino exactly so and then there's also that's been his also running for that seat so the building is concerned well that he is the potential for that to to be locked and they want to do that the Democratic Party at least is the wanting to maintain that speed with the current holder of that sees that that's been a race that perhaps maybe not as high profile of the state great for the presidential but it's one that a large in the landscape of Illinois politics at least the other rate that I think it's something to keep an eye on it that the county clerk of the circuit court you only have one person running there to replace it or that brown exactly and that will be Richard board exactly former cook county commissioner he was out of the political game I think for a couple of years after he left the commission if he now he's back he faces Mike carbonite de Carmen RG I'm not I'm not full of any any actually takes advantage of that in terms of his political leads the fact that his name is hard to pronounce yeah a lighthearted funny I thought it was funny and add that he's branding that I think is is hoping to get over that hump needs out though a long time and the Democratic Party I think it was on the where do you all prior to so that's another wait to keep an eye on yes and then there are a couple of congressional races but I think it's interesting I think the seventh district and campaign Alex and Danny Davis has a couple of pretty strong challenges that the distant landscape of people vying for that seat the card and then the previous election you have to have that you know probably and she's from Compton very active in the community very active across the city on many issues for a number of years he's out the bank that the cell you know we'll see how how does that look I think there are a little bit of a challenge for challenges an interesting race as well okay I want to go to the phone lines right now I'm going to begin first with my calling from Bronzeville very quickly Mike question you may have for Jim Allen hard lord of elections or Amar wrote unit well you know well first good morning to you and good morning to your cast and I would first J. back because you most churches will be closed today is a great opportunity for individuals to go out and to vote for their courage yeah that way they don't have to deal with I've already voted I voted yesterday I have a I'm someone disagree with your our Jeff flock a marked Sardinia I think quite frankly I tell people that plunging argued times thirty one I found that rage four on the server Bristol district and Davis but what also sounds on the west side the US state of the change rates are punch one eleven Gerard morning John zero also from regional to the cook county politics Frank Oliver on strength follow the Vela who is punch one twenty three for commissioner for the metropolitan water reclamation district you can only search for engineers in their ranks on of course turns to one forty one for state of state your state attorney Kimberly Foxx of the clerk of the court five times to reach you bored him I think quite frankly I thought it was quite interesting that when H. R. each if people a number of Tom cards there are collected from the north side import charges that the port should be level difficult Democrats as well as you might imagine Aireon which might marriages there here also not found your hair out of Jim fox on his time card they also saw that with a number of other white all.
