Sunday Surprises: What Went Wrong With the Vikings?
"The team you cover. The vikings appear to have a pretty favorable matchup to start the season facing joe borough in his first game back from acl surgery but a theme we saw on sunday was a lot of games not going as expected. So take us through. What was going wrong for the vikings and what was going right for the bengals for much of this game. Yeah i think the biggest thing that went wrong for the vikings had to do with the penalties twenty four already. Four penalties is opening drive on the vikings after that holding call. I think that there were. I wanna say five false start. Penalties and five holding penalties along with defensive pass interference. Most of those occurred in the first half but the vikings racked up over ninety yards of penalties. It turns out. They got five sacks on borough they forced the bengals to three and thirteen on third down kind of all the fundamentals that you look for me there were decent in the red zone the fundamentals that you look for like a good defense or even a good offense were there but a lot of penalties just took them back. I mean the first drive of the game. They gained forty yards of offense only gained three yards on the field. I'm sure you know mike zimmer. Being the vikings head coach is notoriously intense probably was extremely relaxed in not furious at all about any of these penalties right. Yeah of course i mean. He just rolls with the punches. You know you figure that they will probably take care of themselves now. He was as you would expect. He was pretty vocal at halftime about all of the issues that he's coming up but again most of those issues did occur in the first half. So i guess you know for whatever that's worth. I guess whatever's halftime speech was about cleaning things up. May work voice
NFC North Football Preview: How Do You Judge in a Small Sample Size?
"It didn't take us long in twenty twenty one to get our first best bet winner this season. Remember that yes. We keep track of these things around here. We don't just sweep them under the rug windsor losses. I know it was a unexpected quarterback. That was not supposed to play that showed up but fortunately he didn't have much to offer after just two or three days of camp. That was an interesting story because we didn't think callum on was going to play. The actual vikings team site reported at seven. Pm on the twelfth that it was unlikely he was gonna apply. No one who is going to play. Except mike zimmer who threw him in there and played them almost three quarters after jake browning threw up all over himself so it was a good start to the season getting that out of the way we kind of talked about this a little bit past the the wind right like that's what everyone wants. Everyone wants to win a game. We gave out a pick close three. And i think that's really the important part of this when you're trying to figure out information to follow because there's never going to be a long enough sample size of anyone your tailing for singular season if you're listening to him on the radio or podcast or video. Wherever you're consuming your. You're gambling information. There's never going to be a long enough sample size. So how do you judge in a small sample size in. It's like are you beating the closing. Are you listening to information that might pop or break days after that information comes out and i think that's the interesting part about this podcast because last year i'll be candidate off top of my head. I was looking at the sheet earlier. And i think we released forty six best bets. Last year we won a third of a position for the entire season. It was our worst season today. But of those forty six best bets only to move against us and one was covert related. Every other game moved in our favor so while it was our worst season it was one still profitable in to the thing. You're looking for over short sample sizes. We crushed the closing line. Virtually every single time.

"The fourth quarter and the Vikings defense played very very well. This is interesting to me because it was funny in my home. Addiction for this game. I gave praise to the Vikings Offutt Vikings defense, excuse me, the Vikings defense and Vikings fans called me crazy. They said I know nothing about their team. Why would you appraise our defense? Well, I've watched every single Vikings game this year and I would question did you watch the second half because the Vikings defense got stopped after stop after stop. They forced the Packers to punt twice. That's Aaron Rodgers former MVP quarterback who's been rolling recently. They stopped the Packers on fourth down twice. Now. I've got a missed pass interference call probably gave them a stop on 4th and nine and there was one driver of the Packers punted because basically they had two holding penalties in a row leaving them with a fourth and twenty two month. But my point is that the Vikings defense looked very very well-coached early on Jeff glad we got beeped twice by Davante Adams four touchdowns, but in spite of that they bounced back Glad he did mounts back play better in the second half and I guess I'm simply curious whether or not the Vikings can keep that style of play going, you know, barely throw the football Pound The Rock run the ball at home and cook play clean football have no turnovers play solid defense. I don't think there is any way that can last forever. I mean at some point they're going to need Kirk Cousins took up and throw the football very well, but if somehow by some miracle Minnesota can keep doing this all year. They might have saved their coach's job, which is very interesting to me. I am fascinated by the game plan. The Vikings had to beat the Packers and the way they beat the Packers on Sunday now really, the only thing I have to say about Green Bay is that I just for me the highlight of this game was wow. Can you believe Minnesota, but there was a cool moment at the end. It didn't really matter, but I think it's worth talking about I guess obviously cuz I'm talking about it. The Packers lined up to spike the ball both literally 17 seconds left. And Aaron Rodgers had a moment of realization. Hey, oh my gosh. We're in a bad formation..

"Like, huh? They have a bunch of guys injured and on code page with covet the receiver spot, by the way. They also cut Dante Pettis. The Forty Niners are literally down to Trent Taylor like one guy to catch passes tonight on Thursday Night Football. I have no idea what to do. Now another big story line starting quarterback. Matthew Stafford has been put on the covid-19 reserve list. That's a big deal. He got covid-19 not good. I guess I don't know if you got covered but we least know that either he has covid-19 contact with somebody who does have Is actually closed the 49ers facility is I also read that the Bears have closed Halas Hall. The Bears have shut down their facility because of positive Cove interests. The Texans got a positive Covent test their facility shut down as well. Three players are out for Sunday's game. They're all linebackers. Meaning that the Texans defense is really really hampered and limited on Sunday. They're losing Whitney. Mercilus Dylan Cole and Jacob Martin and Jacob Martin actually did test positive for covid-19. Our facility in really good shape. He's ready to go. He's fit. He's been working out very hard says a lot about him and who he is that he he made sure he was prepared for this moment physically. Remember the Ravens sign Dez Bryant sounded like Dez Bryant was not in physical shape. How do you put on the practice squad? Just interesting now the Vikings there's a story that I missed and I apologize. I meant to talk about this while ago. I think it is. I don't have a lot to say about it. But the Vikings have traded defensive and Yannick ngakoue to the Baltimore Ravens the Vikings get a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 second-round pick. Have you remember earlier in the year? The Vikings actually traded a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick to get Yannick ngakoue from the Jaguars they have now traded him away for a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick. So it's just interesting. They got instead of a second and a fifth. They got a third and fifth back, but and and hope I did say, you know fifth round pick that they traded for. So it's just interesting the Vikings basically borrowed Yannick ngakoue for a couple of weeks and said we suck. It's not working by will get more draft picks..

"But this is a matchup that I feel I just want to see this happen a lot as time goes on and I think for years to come I'm hoping We're going to have really good matchups between Justin Herbert and the Chargers and Drew lock and the Denver Broncos. All right, guys, I'm gonna take a short break when I return we're going to talk about some will do some NFL news and we'll talk about the Vikings beating the Packers and the Saints will the Saints. Oh my gosh. No, the Seattle Seahawks beating the 49ers. The Forty Niners are in bad shape tonight the Packers play the 49ers and I I didn't covid-19 have a big impact on the game. But you got to realize the San Francisco 49ers are just totally devoid of talent. Everybody's injured or hurt and it's really really bad. So I I cautioned you if you're watching the game tonight do not have high expectations for the San Francisco 49ers. If they win this game. It's just another example of how long of a genius or head coach Kyle Shanahan truly is guys. My name is Akshay Kumar..

"Brand tonight, you scored last night on national TV from Arizona State with the Niners. And Justin Jeffrey. It's unbelievable how good these kids are. Now. The caveat is a lot of what he got was when the game was over, and Atlanta's defense was able to loosen up. Take some chances. Play a little. I play a little of Footloose and fancy free and Justin took advantage of it put up a big box store, but he's fantastic, and I love that. He's on the game. So let's go this route with the with the time Do you have left this morning talking with Paul Allen? I'm good man. I got as much as you want that first. Kirk Cousins interception. That was awful that that wass you see, like in Mike Zimmer's press conference after the game, somebody asked him first play of the game. Your quarterback throws an interception. And the Falcons bench erupted in a way like they just got an interception in the Super Bowl. You see, they fired their coach and general manager Monday, and and he must have not been very well liked by a lot of people. I'm not. I shouldn't say that cause I'm not there. I'm just saying when things were going well for the Falcons yesterday, atone five. The reaction on their bench was like they just burst out of this bubble the pandemics over and have to wear a mask. I gotta go to U S Bank stadium. There be 66,000 is like I Kenbrell. I mean, that's who they were yesterday. In Zimmer's post game press conference, John He was asked about that first interception and how bad was it for the rest of the game now? 95% of the time coaches should or will say. Well, it was a bad way to start the game. But we still have 70 to 75 plays to win it. Mike didn't say that. Mike Mike basically said Yeah, you know, in the second one was very deflating, too. So you know him being on the bench and leading the team. You could kind of sense when Kirk threw that interception to Deon Jones. That they almost they almost didn't come back from it that they almost did not emotionally. They bounce back from it by plays later Falcon scored, then we go throwing it out and they score again. You know, Now we're down 10, 0 toe a winless team and and now human nature might start setting in while we got the by next week. We'll That's not great, either. I mean, it's cool that you know they don't have to work every single day. But, you know, I believe this to be accurate because of covert testing and the fact that you know, there have been zero positives for this team through six games, and it's starting to become ah, an escalating problem around the NFL, With with players oer teams getting bit seemingly on a weekly basis now. With, you know, with with the bike coming up. I don't think they can't go anywhere coaches and players and essentials and all that. They have stayed here because they have to test every day. So if you thought you were going to go to Mexico for a minute or Las Vegas or back to Florida and Louisiana or Texas to see your family, that ain't gonna happen. So that's negative, too. It's It's very negative right now, ma'am well and from a from a fan's perspective and just a sort of tio, not tow, spend time on it, but from the sort of social media aspect of it, watching the television Coverage of it was brutal, because right before that opening play in the past, they had just gotten through talking about the interceptions that cousin had cousins had done in his record so far this year. I mean, literally, they stopped talking, and he threw. The interception was like from a fan's perspective. You go to Twitter and you want to talk about like I agree with you. I think the mo mention shift on the field. You can see it. But you can also see watching online, you know, and a lot of that is it's arbitrary when you think about it. Sure, but you, but, you know John. We won the toss. And when you win the toss 9.5 out of 10 times the team differs so you can put your defense on the field. Get a stop. And then as you start the third quarter, you're going to get the ball. We took the ball. I mean, I can't remember the last time we did that. When we want to toss and said, we'll take the ball. They loved what they had so much to get down the field and put a seven up on this team. That they wanted the ball first, knowing starting the third quarter. We're not going to have the ball and that's big and then the interception. So now if you're the head coach, and you're not going to second guess An offensive coordinator has been to seven Super Bowls in one for you're not going to be like we talked about it all week. What the hell are we doing if we win the toss taking the ball, but that, you know, second guessing may creep in. It's just that that's how it's going to be. Now You know where you got to be wary of finger pointing. You have to be wary of overly second guessing. And you just need to take a deep breath. Build yourself for yourselves from the bottom and start there. So ask you this question before before I cut you loose this morning. Ah, lot of talk all over the place, and I'll pose it this way. Do you anticipate any Big changes to the team with regard to the after that, or to find big. I mean, you know, personnel changes or otherwise right now, you know, Drew brought up something with with Zimmer last week, right, you know, and and I know, drawing up known each other quite some time, and I didn't mean to be flippant, or I didn't mean to be You know to to in his face where it's like, it's ridiculous. If you think even a CZ bad as you think this is that they would fire this head coach right now. And 90 noon today in 45 minutes, K FAA I'ma double down on that, and here's why it's forget the peace that they extended him three years. And you would have to eat whatever up to 20 ish million per or whatever deal you cut. There's a monetary value here. Forget that Theo Ners are billionaires, with all due respect. Here is why it's a not on the table with the owners of the Minnesota Vikings. And should I speak for the team? Know? Am I writing my gut instinct? Yeah. There's zero discussion of relieving Mike Zimmer of his job Now despite how bad that looked yesterday, but really, from a human from a from a humanistic standpoint. When you have somebody who has been here seven years and has built the level of respect he has with this team and with this ownership group and with this fan base And had a defense that has been his potent as it has been for as long as it has been, And clearly it's fallen off this year. You don't embarrass somebody like Mike Zimmer and fire him over a bye week because you're one in five I mean, what in the hell is that going to accomplish? You're going to embarrass and incredibly well respected individual around the NFL who won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys that's going to make you look bad. Who you can elevate from within. I mean, Gary Kubiak. Okay, maybe, But what's that going to accomplish from one and five? You're not going to the playoffs..
Buffalo Bills acquire Diggs from Vikings for 4 picks
"Radio back to the NFL some big moves Monday as the talking began Tom Brady hasn't made a decision although some of the decisions may be impacting him meanwhile we know Amari Cooper will be staying with Dallas end the bills reportedly acquiring Stefon Diggs of the Vikings for four draft picks earlier on ESPN radio on Freddie inferred Simmons giving up a first fifth sixth for a guy who has been a massive headache in your locker room for the last two years and and during a you know a playoff game wild card game against the saints when I got but ends up winning the game right exactly Kirk cousins goes to Kyle Rudolph instead of digs no no I'm not some of the game winning touchdown time out at third or those of third down conversion and and they converted and digs goes off the field and throws his helmet into the bench do it you got a first down you about winning the game were just by yourself oh wait yeah we we we we know what you're about so I don't get giving up that much to get him outside from the public but from a kid a skill standpoint I do get it I knew they would take that better back to back thousand yard seasons I mean he is a remarkable talent my problem with Gallic Biggs is in the room because when he's not being targeted he's a pain in the rear end I wonder how much of this is the findings wanted out of Minnesota so badly that he was going to act like that now I'm not trying to explain it not condoning it all in but I wonder how much a whatever led to him wanting a break wanting a divorce in the Minnesota Vikings whatever that was it could be Adam Phelan and his emergence or you want to play a Kirk cousins wait a problem Mike Zimmer whatever it was the findings have enough for Minnesota and he did everything possible verbally invent action wise to make sure that they were not going to keep him even early today when Kirk cousins got his extension the findings was not have a leader was not even Catholic high thought he said I guess it's time to get out here tell me about the Minnesota he was determined to get out of whatever led to the break I don't know what it was but he got his wish now the findings you got what you want to handle it because if you don't people gonna say you had a good thing going to Minnesota where they were building my United Phelan and that wasn't good enough for you buffalo reportedly sending four picks to Minnesota a first a fifth or sixth in twenty twenty and a fourth rounder in twenty twenty one while also getting a seventh rounder back this spring from the Vikings Diggs is in the second year of a five year seventy two million
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner secretly competes in rodeo events
"Arizona Diamondbacks left hander Madison Bumgarner has been competing in rodeo events under the alias Mason's Saunders and even one of twenty six thousand five hundred sixty dollars and a team roping competition in December according to a story published Sunday by the athletic Bumgardner was told I told the website that he has discreetly competed in rodeos for awhile including in March of last year two days before pitching for the San Francisco Giants in a cactus league spring training game he's been roping since he was fifteen or sixteen and said he's been added so long that quote it's just part of who you are he's the twenty fourteen World Series MVP if he agreed to an eighty five million dollar five year contract with the Diamondbacks this past December and I'm sorry Courtney if I was the diamond backs I wouldn't be thrilled to find out that my ace left hander yes competing in rodeos in the offseason this is the same guy who got injured on a dirt bike do not remember that when he was with the giants and that was a serious injury that put him out for a very long time no wonder he was performing I guess you want to call that under a pseudonym or a fake name because had you found out about this the Diamondbacks might not have spent eighty eighty five million dollar a gigantic sum over a five year contract on this guy I mean it doesn't make any sense like I understand the thrill of competition and this is who we is but these risky things every sport has stuff like this written into players contracts that you cannot do I mean I always go back to when it when he got hurt in San Francisco a few years ago do you remember the month Taylor's thing when he was with the warriors he fell off the scooter when he went back to Mississippi for the offseason S. lied about it yeah that was a story that came to mind and I feel like any time something like this it comes to the light I'm not one of these people is like all the cool funny look how cute of the story is I'm like what is he thinking like you get injured and made these you know these are animals eat these things have a mind of their own they're powerful they're strong and certainly he's you know well conditioned and knows how to be around horses but you know that to me is way too big of a risk if I'm a professional athlete you know the prime of my career to take but you know he's done it before and that he is you know we don't really get that much of outside having serious injuries at receiver big penalty from the team for you know the motorbike thing according to have the details how did he come up with the alias of Mason's Saunders instead of going with you know his own name Madison Bumgarner sell it this came from directly from the athletic article that broke the story said quote if you competed as Madison Bumgarner every phone camera in the area that would have been trained on him he said so he devised Mason Saunders the surname is the maiden name of his wife Allie Mason is a shortened version for Madison and it's something allegedly his wife called him out in public so people don't recognize them so very clever I'll give him that but I don't think the whole thing is a buzz saw her story totally bizarre and the other thing is you know if this was an NBA player everybody would recognize them already because NBA players are actually recognizable it just goes to show you how anonymous baseball players are that the most clutch postseason pitcher maybe of all time can compete in rodeos and nappy racket I think what I know it's wild lake in the in the fact is here like he continues to go what do these very risky things it just doesn't seem to care yeah if you get caught I mean there's the photo in that athletic article where he's smiling and you know he's with I guess that it's a two person thing that team roping so I hope twenty six thousand dollars I hope that Madison Bumgarner did not keep that for myself given the gigantic contract he just signed in December the but yeah he looks he's not there we is in this picture I mean I just think it's hilarious how almost incognito so many baseball players can live their lives in that matter just because they blend in because they're not these gigantic athletes by and large I mean they're not six eight or you know they don't think Shaquille o'neal out there everybody would be able to tell if you're you know for the most part with NBA athletes I just don't understand why when you have hit the genetic lottery anyway to be able to throw the ball a hundred miles an hour the end and to be able to make eighty six million dollars really it's more than that doing this why you would ever risk your body or put like what your fans in your organization is rooting for on the line so recklessly and you pointed out he already ruined the giants season aired my fantasy baseball season which is far more important Courtney by falling off of that dirt bike a couple years ago and here he is I guess he says I'm just going to live my life and Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen told the athletic that quote he was not going to get into discussing specific contract language but you pointed this out that we know the player contracts have I can't imagine that the Diamondbacks are cool with their ace pitcher also being a rodeo road being a cowboy literally let alone they don't want to be a Dallas cowboy let alone in being a literal cowboy well I just remember a couple years ago at the end I felt combine whistle and was talking to Mike Zimmer about you know the quarterback situation at that point he had said that Sam Bradford had a degenerative knee I come to find out later that offseason I was speaking with Kyle Rudolph who said that he went skiing with Sam Bradford that off season right around the time of the combine so I'm thinking to myself you are here you are a health concern and you're going skiing or you could very easily risk tearing your ACL for a third time and you already had your season cut short because of injury like I wonder if these guys just do it for the thrill or maybe they just don't care because they have ungodly amounts of money to begin with if they feel like they can the kind of invincible they can do whatever they want but you do wonder like this has to be in contract language if you cannot do things like this because we know across sports there's certain things you're just not able to do I it's a liability reasons you ever been to a rodeo Courtney I half I went Mississippi when I work down there the show but county fair rodeo I've been to the Cheyenne frontier days shout out if you're listening in Cheyenne Wyoming on the ESPN radio affiliate there I gotta tell you it's oddly it is oddly entertaining but the the thrill of it is almost that you think that the that the ball right is just going to charge and block these cowboys into next year it is one of the most dangerous things I have ever seen and I never in my life once thought you know what it be cool to jump in there with these bowls and try to try this on for for my but how do you even practice you know you kind of just have to get in there and and take it on right yeah I guess I guess so what I mean I've seen the photos of Madison Bumgarner I'd taken the horse around the warning track at AT&T park when he was still a giant I just think that that's who he is this is got this guy is a country bumpkin at heart from North Carolina and I I just think that he grew up this way and it's always gonna be a part of him so he feels like Hey I'm an able bodied individual and I also have more money than anybody at this rodeo thing I'm gonna do what I want and it's somebody else take issue with it I'm sure they actually would found out about it right now well look I know why it's so good in the clutch in game seven of the World Series because if that that's nothing compared to facing down the eyes of a bull

Cowboys to move on without Jason Garrett
"Jason Garrett's time up as coach of the Dallas Cowboys Edward a reporting Jerry Stephen Jones have decided coach will not be part of the organization moving forward on Friday and paid Simmons on why this process lasted so long after the season to other Jerry and Stephen Jones have moved slowly out of respect for Jason Garrett you know they have a long history with him as a backup quarterback you to this is that coach a head coach's father was in the organization when Jerry bapa team as a scout and they finally concluded that phase of this process and that's going to end with Jason Garrett not being a part of the organization beyond his expiring contract and when exactly they make that announcement I thought sure what I've been told soon and that the next phase will have them moving into the process of interviewing candidates in the battle begin quickly after phase one is totally finished off yes was contract set to expire January fourteenth status with the team at issue since last February the cowboys didn't give a contract extension they missed the playoffs in twenty nineteen finish eight neighbor the four time in his tenure as coach Keyshawn Johnson on the job candidates and Jerry Jones himself he was on sports and we stand ready to make a decision on it there was the eight their long term in the obvious would clearly felt that their work you say while they waited till Thursday well the food that just won't really it just is so you kind of say okay take a deep breath we get back to the facilities we talk about a little bit we think about we pondered overnight we need or Thursday we meet on Tuesday we meet on Wednesday we have a conversation and we finally so you know women the best thing for us to do if not give the public what they looking for what they looking for me to do is be extremely mad and walk out of there on Sunday night if fire you on the tarmac so instead of doing that this call wait a couple days are you playing for the cowboys you're familiar with Jerry Jones and and and his thinking all what happens next now in this search for the next cowboys head coach I think a guy like Mike Zimmer Minnesota Vikings head coach could potentially be a candidate you say how could that be well I I II coach there in the deepest corner along try defensive coordinator for Jerry Jones is the bill Parcells fact either stay here they know what they're getting in that particular coach but also there's a young officer coordinator in cabin step band he this sitting there in Minnesota the Minnesota Vikings don't want to part ways with him they don't want him all of a sudden start to get interviews and become a category another team so I would be surprised if somehow might dimmer wind up being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the cabinet she takes over as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings so a lot of story lines this call come about here over the next with date but I think this time around you will get the head coaching job right where the coach may be season one more before we go do you think that at this point Jerry Jones is ready to surrender more control to a head coach now then he has been willing to in the past as bill Parcells left and and I want to turn this on your stamina I am right now status is not a defense Jerry Jones was some what he is and even as well as we clay as well as Jerry junior what is your you Jones gone wrong with that organization other than the head coaching hire that's a very good question that's very good everybody everybody everybody said here you're you're here the one on that team thank you for calling the latter team for the National Football League I would I would argue and say that their top five channels it is four tally dole is a National Football League the problem is that head coach because you're you're not holding the plate yeah well that gives the player is a free pass for having innate need season the talent on the field didn't win enough games he and Garrett will finish as the second longest tenured and second most winningest coach in team history Tom Landry a record of eighty five and sixty seven the wonders to playoff games unable to get past the divisional round Mike wells Myron Medcalf on Freddie Fitzsimmons the Dallas Cowboys there you know they draw attention but the the the days of being America's team and wanted to be part of what is age and it's not the same anymore it is not the same strictly because of what you have to deal with away from just coaching of football team is not simply you know put together a strong staff the coaster brakes of Amari Cooper Ezekiel Elliott and dak Prescott it's also having the answer constant questions from your boss the owner Jerry Jones deck could become a headache when you're you can't simply just focus on the task of putting your team in the proper position the try to have success there's a side show that comes with it and some people are built or not built to be able to deal with that so you got to find the right coach who is not only a great Exynos guy but somebody who's mentally strong enough to handle the constant you know looking over the shoulders and the pestering of your boss meddling in the inside of things wonder why things are not going well or to give us suggestions on what you should be doing that's not something easy that everybody can handle that type of situation well it and not everybody wants it and that's why I think a lot of these cultures your Matt rules related rallies urban Meyer's why except that to me if you're not going to modernize the structure of your organization so that your owner can do what every other owner does and take a backseat and not be this forward facing figure who's hosting its own press conferences after the game sometimes undermining the head coach then then how can you expect to attract a great candidate bomb out rule no one eight I'm leaving Baylor I got a chance to build something there if I'm leak in Raleigh I'm in Oklahoma and every year I get a chance to go to the college football playoff leave in Oklahoma where I can coach for another decade at least about continue to succeed ever murmur Meyer I'm not leaving LA or on the TV analyst making good money watching a lot of football injuries bouncing around the country see a lot of teams to go to Dallas where I've got a deal with Jerry that's why I think it's going to be difficult if Jerry Jones wants to continue to be Jerry Jones I don't think Mike he's going to end up with any of the top candidates identifying potential replacements Bobby carpenter and fox college football reporter Bruce Feldman gas on Freddie impede Simmons Stephen Jones Jerry Jones offered that coaching job urban Meyer she would say I think that's a hard job to say no urban probably wouldn't be needing to be for another year is that all you but who knows enough the big job at the glamorous job and remember the nose you know damn owns his courage and damn ongoing expound acted it all back thank god yeah I was supposed to do the oil itself journal part of mine and to buy that it was offered so you're going to want to meet your need to guide it was a proven track record we've done it before who's been in the playoffs the only guy that I look at the newest hires cycle that's really available is Mike McCarthy and it's free thank god I'm not that I'm not the biggest Mike McCarthy stand the world but he's the only guy that it holds no one Barty and that is the only thing that Jerry Jones once he is getting older is that you know you if you spend more time on this earth that he's going to spend has the last was starving if you get that oracle Marty troche with them of the order would love to put it in there Mike you've done that you chose to leave and you've been in the playoffs he's done a good job that would be my selection I don't know if they don't know what it does do checks all

Jerry Jones cryptic about Jason Garrett’s future, says he ‘will be coaching in the NFL next year’
"Listen to the cowboys started the season with high expectations. That is a true statement but now it's a season that has devolved into a race to win the worst division in football. Here we go. That's where we start. Cowboys said at six and six after a disappointing home loss to the bills on Thanksgiving Day and has Dallas prepares to face the bears Thursday night. Jerry Jones continues to answer questions about the future of his head coach Jason Garrett look where we are with our skill set eh look it up toward they are with Ayers and there's nothing to my mind that jumps out of me that we can't be playing well enough to take it to the house Think about there's no exclusive but he's got exclusive skills to get the job so the collectively so you could but they're qualified people WANNA opinion. It'd be coaching Jerry. Jones has been supportive of Jason Garrett. I think it's fair to say that however was an interesting statement with friends like Jerry. Look Coach Ryan. We'll start with eat right in your ear. Yeah I think we should. I think that's a fair assessment. Oh ooh boy. I had my friend Jerry. Jones is not stupid. No right at all. You don't get to the point. He is in life. You don't get be this rich if you're a stupid man man. He's rich enough to not really care like Jerry. Jones knows how the things that he says will be taken. He knows that people on the outside not we'll be listening also people within his organization he understands what a statement like. JC Garrett will be coaching in this league next year. We'll we'll make everybody do. We'll make the people in the building where where where we'll be coaching Jerry coaching. Well he'd be a quarterbacks coach. Well He'd be office coordinator. What you won't see is he will be the coach of the Dallas Cowboys? And that's what matters if you're talking about Jason Garrett and being anywhere which he has done for year in in year out where we wanted him to fire Jason Garrett for being mediocre. He said he's my guy he's my coach. He will be here. I have faith in him. That soon has totally totally changed to love the way. Mike Zimmer coaches football. I don't expect to ever out coach Bill Belichick and if I can't I can't coach Bill Belichick. I expect out coach Adam Gates and not lose to him Jerry. Jones is ready to get rid of dude. Well there's no doubt that the rhetoric and the tone has changed. Now it's interesting. The Point Ryan Makes Jerry Jones. Smart knows what he's saying. You know that was true with physio Elliott as well when he made that Zeke who you know and he said I was kidding. He was kidding but he you know every every job has a morsel of truth he does know what he's saying and he understands stands out it will be portrayed and in this case I think you're right. The unwavering support for Jason Garrett has come to an end actions. Speak Louder than words. So I mean he's given us a lot of words but really the actions he hasn't. He doesn't have a contract going forward next year so he might coach but Jerry say is not going to be here but he thinks appeals kills conflict. It'd be somewhere else to me. You know he the writings on the wall when when the organization says that we have everything you need and you have to want to super bowl or bus. That's all I mean. There's not much talk about. I mean really. It's been laid out there pretty clean and and Jerry feels he's assembled he is the general manager and the owner. He feels he's like these assembled a championship team. And they're not playing like a champion right now. Does that remind you when you go through a break up and the person says you. I don't want to be with you anymore. But the next person is so oh lucky to have you it. Has that same sort of tone like you know. He'll be coaching in the league. Readers don't really probably want him here in Dallas because he has really been inconsistently early on in the season with backing him saying even as Soon as two weeks ago he was saying better things about Jason Garrett and it just seems every time they win he loves them and soon as they start losing or put together a a you know a poor performance immediately changes the tune in he. He likes to keep them on notice. But I think I don't want to speak for you but I think we can all agree that probably the end of the season if they don't make the playoffs this is probably. I'm not even sure I'm not even sure. I think it takes more than a million. It's always going deep is I believe it's always been that for Jason Garrett in this season and this is why he didn't and have a contract going forward but also understand that a huge reason that Jason Garrett is there is because he can deal with this part of coaching for Jerry Jones. And I don't think I you know I think. That's worth sort of underlining not everybody can and coach you but a coach in this league for several teams. It is a different animal when you coach for Jerry Jerry Jones and you have to take the total package. Not Everybody can do that or not and I get. You can't be there have the understand I I'll be honest if I'm there. I would have to have an understanding because it could not go the way it goes right now. Right and Jason Garrett has been able to handle that part I think into function within those stipulations. And so but you know I think I think this this relationship is coming to a close look the head coach. Come the end of the season though in this job is open. Let's let's just say you think there's going to be guys. Turn that Opportunity Down Because of Jerry Jones. I know I don't I don't believe so. But I also understand that. His more successful coaches who have had different personalities also haven't lasted as long as Jason Garrett has been more successful bay one super bowls but also all those people have left a lot earlier. Jerry needs a strong presence like a Jimmy. John's their push back. He needs strong presence for his head coach but he he is not going to have one if he mandates that things go certain way. And that's just a reality. So what he needs. The most he probably repels away. Greatest strength greatest weakness right. We see it so
‘You Have To Be Able To Throw The Ball’: Vikings’ Adam Thielen Frustrated After Loss To Bears
"Finally in the News Adam the'll and has thoughts on the Vikings kings offense after Minnesota no showed on offense against the mighty bears defense Thalen expressed some frustration ration- I'm not sure if it was with the offense of philosophy or the guy who's supposed to be throwing the ball. Let's listen it well. I think I think that's probably what's frustrating. Straight thing is is we knew that was going to happen at some point. At some point you're not run the ball for one hundred eighty even with the best running back and that's when you have to be able to throw the ball you have to be able to make place have to be able to hit the ball at the you have to do that because otherwise it's too easy for changes not Evan and Russia quarterback so we have to be we have to be able to run the ball and pass misleading cannot be won a national. It's just too easy founder. It's odd to see Minnesota struggling at at this level on ovens West. You may remember shortly before the season started. I was very high in their offense thought they could really maybe it'd be a top OP five top three number one but it's all gone totally to hell and the one thing that has really jumped out to me. That's his surprised me is that the one you could always count on kirk cousins offense was he was going to put up numbers and they were his team will move the football that is what's disappeared here and that's been to me the most surprising thing that you add Alvin Cook into the mix and we talked about it on Sunday. The offensive line obviously has issues but that they would be this inept. I just did not see this coming at all. It's fascinating to me. Cousins is a rhythm passer and he hasn't been in rhythm really since last October and I think if you read between the lines with Adam feeling he at least he may be other players at the vikings have some issues with kirk cousins right now and maybe he's not maybe it's that he's not pulling the trigger when the passes are there any cousins defense. It's not often that the past is are there because his offense of line the mixture of that offensive line that system kirk cousins isn't working yet. It's not a good thing when dealing in that same interview was kind of asked what's different this year with you guys you. You know not getting as much separation and the most telling thing is he immediately said that's not what I see. I mean he's he's saying he's opened and yeah cousins has been under under pressure. There's a good article in the athletic yesterday about it hasn't been extreme and watching that game there were many plays where he did have time and there are deep throws you would think to to give a shot to dig deal and they did try a couple of hit one and he's instead of checking the ball down and I think that's the frustration Gratien in when you have Mike Zimmer on Monday saying the same thing. You've got to pull the trigger when you're when you're talking about your quarterback that way it's I don't know there's bubbled over frustration and there probably probably is in effect that you can't really measure scientifically on most quarterbacks outside of the most mentally tough that if you've been damaged and battered and hurt for a season plus behind a line you lose some trust for them. We've seen younger quarterbacks even earlier this year after a game or two of that not act the way you'd expect them to Aaron Rodgers do it in the last couple couple years you develop bad habits and absolutely there's this one play where they do the boot action and cousins rolls out to his right and he had there's no one within twenty yards of him at that time and he immediately like fires fastball over the middle to his running back. I think it was. Cj Ham who was one yard pass the line of scrimmage and he did it like right away and that's the type of play where you just it drives you crazy. I think if you're never CJ HAMAS open though you've got to get the ball to him get it to them in space and watch the magic. That's that's the philosophy. The football coaches the world over believe. That's what's happening in the

"And Mike Zimmer. yeah because he wants to be a run first run heavy offense and dell my god some of the moves he put on the raiders are still trying to find their shoes and socks after some of the stock moves that he put on the field Sunday at Minnesota but now I've got I've got to take the under here and that's not in any way denigrating would Dalvin cook can do I think he's gonna be north of sixteen hundred yards but I don't see two thousand. Jason I'm gonna take me over because it's the only thing will make me feel better about what I saw on Sunday. then turn around and say you know what he was just as spectacular plus no went on the ball ten times in a win earlier I mean come on they're committed to it give me some hope I respect the prism through which you look at exactly it is impressive worth noting that blessed you think this is just a volume attend Marlon Mack Christian McCaffrey Nick Chubb all have more rushing attempts on the season so far dealt with it out of a destroyer leader yards per carry average I'm gonna go under as well on this reminder play along with us on Instagram at goal can we go as we hit these over unders case we'll start with you here Michael Thomas has just one receiving touchdown on the season he's on pace to finish with just five that would be tied for his lowest output of his career over under five touchdowns Michael Tom I've got to go over I mean there's just no way you can see that level of her I know that obviously they have there the quarterback issue but there's no way that you can see that that level of production sustaining he's too good for five touchdowns way to. private. three can be out for awhile. but not this season not this season yeah I got to take over I think he's getting closer to ten five on pace full season.

Andrew Luck retires: Colts' personnel moves forward with Jacoby Brissett
"The Indianapolis Colts in thirteen days face the LA Chargers went out Andrew luck and with your cover percept the guy for whom they traded Labor Day weekend at twenty seventeen he started fifteen games that year after being thrust into the mix with no opportunity to learn the offense no opportunity to learn the personnel no opportunity to learn the coaches everything's on the fly for Jacoby per set it was for an eleven which obviously is not an ideal record but he played well under the circumstances and remember twenty seventeen GM Chris Ballard was still trying to dig out from the mess that Ryan Grigson had made from two thousand twelve for two thousand sixteen in Indianapolis so I think there's reason for optimism as they move forward with your cover per set they have resisted all options and opportunities to trade burset elsewhere and now they have him and now he's the guy now Chris Ballard the guy who has compiled this culture Austin made the playoffs last year made the final weight has to cover percent he understands that the office will be different without interlocutors Ballard from Saturday night we're not gonna ask you go we were said to be Angela Angela was a unique unique player but you go we were set is is a winning football player initially and he is an apple I think your would you what Andrew said Cody said is a rare rare leaders he is he's a rare human being man I know look in that moment Chris Ballard needs to say something to inspire confidence in the locker room and beyond that the colts will rebound from this but look at what they rebounded from just in the past couple of years Josh McDaniels fails on a verbal agreement to take over as coach of the team following fifth Super Bowl fifty two bad stunner on a Tuesday night and we had a hard the rumblings that you know what McDaniels may not take that job after all and they didn't and they were covered and they pivoted to Frankreich and Frank Reich has ended up being the guy who maybe should have been at the top of the list from the get go and right there was a thing or two about moving on from disappointment about changing circumstances and adjusting on the fly right was the quarterback of that game in buffalo the comeback for the ages when the Orleans wrote thirty five to three it wasn't Jim Kelly he was injured it was Frank right it was Frank Reich who was the offense of coordinator the Philadelphia Eagles in two thousand seventeen when Carson Wentz suffered a torn ACL in the middle of December the kind of injury that would derail a team's playoff run they pivoted to Nick Foles the cobble together an offense that would work in light of his skills and they won the freaking Super Bowl with Nick Foles that was the final active Frank breaks career in Philadelphia's offense of coordinator he's not going to panic he's not gonna give in he's not going to give up it was three years ago that teddy Bridgewater suffered a torn ACL at a no contact practice it's always no contact quarterbacks just a week or so before the start of the regular season and Mike Zimmer said nobody's gonna shut down the season nobody's gonna cry force we just have to go forward it was not long ago we heard Frankreich explaining that he learned from watching Tony Dungy how to stay even keel in that setting how to be the call in the middle of the storm and the importance of that message sends to the rest of people the organization now since how possible Frank break knew what was coming so already was working himself into that state of call so he could be the beacon of hope and stability for the franchise because he knows that they're going to go into the season without interlock but regardless between Ballard who has put together a top flight roster couple of all pros not just pro bowlers but all pros that were rookies last year and continuing to build continuing to finesse continuing to make that team better and yes it makes that team worse not having interlock but there's a quiet confidence between Ballard and right and also what we've seen from the cover set I'm not gonna write the colts off at look people will write them off they will have no expectations the fall off the radar screen and and and now well one hand the division to the Jaguars with the Jaguars in the Texans act the colts I think we'll still be

Then you table take that whatever you do. I can do better. We have different skills. Yeah. This is do on the air here. It's a lot of fun. I like it. I'm into that self. What are they called deprivation Monroe though? Maybe they had a good sense of humor. Right. Absolutely. You gotta be yourself because you know, people talk about geology time. Right. So exactly always find that people have the people that can't joke about themselves to me. They're like the most depressing people in the world, right? Like, you just Pergamum do is wrong with you. You know that right, right. No one's perfect. Look at us. All right. Let's let's talk about perfect, right? Mike Zimmer in his five seasons with the Minnesota. Vikings is forty seven thirty two and he's fourteen and a half games over five hundred yet he was going to go into the season as a lame duck coach. Now, they picked up his option. So he's got two years left on his deal. Is it time for the Vikings to seriously start thinking about divorcing themselves from Mike Zimmer because of one bad season. I mean, isn't that overkill? That's definite over. I mean, this is because the league that we're in because of the expectations of what you did in a previous year. It's always so much hiding, and if you have one year that's not so good or not what everybody expected, then you're automatically think the grass is greener. And I think there is a great coach I was around him a little bit what he's in Atlanta. And I knew him pretty good. I mean, he's he's a guy who's feisty gets out to get the most out of his guys, and you know, things happen throughout a season. And you think about it you bring in a new quarterback, obviously incurred because he has to get used to the system we have to get used to where Zad. I mean, there's so many different things that happen around a team. And you can't just put it all into one year. That's why you know, what had happened in Denver. They fire the coach I was like this is just ridiculous. Like, you gotta give these guys a chance, but Zimmer has been such a great job. I believe he just read a stat line. In of allergies over five hundred you talking about the miracle just a few years ago when you know, obviously when they beat the saints and. At the end the ball game. This is a team that defensively under his tulips has been in the top. I think it's top eleven and all five seasons that he's been. So he's put together a great defense. He's put together guys who play to his standard. And now you bring in a quarterback who used to bring it around. You gotta young running back. That's energetic. That's you know, he got hurt you know, year ago. So he's he's finally back and healthy. But I think this is a time where he started to feel that pressure. But I don't think you hear my dog. He doesn't really care what the outside people are saying he's just trying to continue to win game. But I think the fact that he brought engaged kubiak is a is a very good call for the offense. Obviously done a great job with the defense, but bringing in cougs is a great great thing for her to get this offense back role in his second year usually most quarterbacks and offense is play better in their second year in a system. I I agree hundred percent, look, I don't think. Kirk cousins statistically was great this year. But I don't really think he was that great this year. You know, I think the statute little misleading with dalvin cook still has to prove he Ian, stay healthy. But if dalvin cooking stay healthy. This guy's a thirteen hundred yard rusher. No question about Adams avenue and only outside. I mean, come on me digs. How tight end? To be fair. Look, here's the issue. The issue is it's not Mike Zimmer's fault. And it's really no one's fault that Everson Griffen. Had a mental breakdown. Right. I mean that hurt the team you have Daniel hunter is a stud. They probably should resign. Sheldon richardson. They probably can't though in terms of money. But there is talent there is it his fault that Xavier Rhodes played by crap this year. No actually the last couple of years. He's played like crap. So the fact is you gotta give Zimmer a year this coming year, and I wouldn't even put pressure on him to be honest with you. But you you give them this year with Kirk cousins and year number to see what he does. And look if they struggle this year, then he goes on the hot seat. Right. I just don't think you put them on the hot seat going into this year off of one bad year. I agree. It's not really that fair. And you look at the division. They're in you got a quarterback Aaron Rodgers who we can talk hours about it. And what he's about. I am you gotta play them twice a year Trubisky in the bears. They're definitely this season was one of their better years, and they like they're on a on the uptick as well. And obviously the lions are still working progress. But you got another quarterback who can throw you got three quarterbacks in his division that are going to put a lot of pressure on you. But at in the day he continues to put out good defense. Like, you said he can't do anything about an exhibitor roads you go out. And you know, you draft trade you. You know, you hope to continue to play at a high level. Anthony, borrow those type of guys are still may guys for you. This is a team that has a lot of good pieces for my Zimmer. And I think he's an outstanding coach, and I think he's gonna turn it around. And like I mentioned in the second year on this system offensively. They will be better you talking about the numbers that Kirk cousins put up put up some big numbers, but he just did not perform well in those key times to win ballgames that they were into so Zimmer and the pressure needs to be off him the fact that he's been over five hundred and been winning. And obviously they came in second in the NFC north last year. Just a few plays away from being right back into the playoffs where they were a couple of years ago. DJ Shockley in for Rodney Harrison, I'm Dan Schwartzman here on NBC sports radio. Here's another one. Andrew Whitworth is what thirty six years old. I believe the Rams announcing that he's going to be back for another season. How big is it for the Rams bringing back a guy that just two years ago when they brought him in really stabilized at offensive line. Oh, that's a major thing. You're talking about a left tackle who comes in and protects the backside of your young quarterback. And he's a guy who's very vocal upfront for some of those offenses alarm has been around the league for for years four time pro bowler. But this is a guy, you know, who's gonna bring the leadership. He's gonna bring the experience is going to bring door Billy and accountability to that that offensive line. This is a guy who has started a hundred and ninety five games out of one hundred ninety nine in thirteen seasons. You talking about being accountable being there when you know, everybody needs you and four quarterback will you dropped back to pass. And you know, that left tackle has your bag. You don't have to worry about. You're going to have to kind of peak over your left shoulder a little bit to make sure that you know, that that that that other backside in is gonna rip your head. I'll having a guy back there with his type of experience is big for this team going forward. It's like having we talked about earlier avenue adjacent win on the team. He brings that type of oral about them that guy's respect and Whitworth is one of those type of guys who you know, he's to play out this final year of his contract. But to have him back issues for that offense and even bigger full entire team. Here's my war. He though, okay. He's played at such a high level. He's thirty seven years old. Listen DJ, you know, this right in the NFL guys. Don't grace age. They don't age gracefully. Right. They fall. If Andrew Whitworth loses a tiny step, even okay at this point with the speed of edge rushers today. He's done for isn't there that legitimate Warri that he's a thirty seven year old left tackle protecting the blind side of your young quarterback that you're gonna pay thirty five million bucks a year two and a couple of years. I don't work, and I'll tell you why don't work because of what you just said because he's been around so long. He understands the experience part of what guys are trying to do you think about an office of tackle where they played a play inside of two three four yard box. And if he doesn't do anything extra. He's gonna watch tons of film on whoever he's planning answer. He's going to get all his moves down. He's a seasoned veteran. There's only so many things guys can do to you say lose a step. Okay. But this guy's a monster to he gets his hands on you. He's gonna mall you. He stays in that box and long as he just holds up for two or three seconds. He's gonna be five. But I think all the things that I've seen. And heard and know and talk he's a smart guy. So he understands that. Okay. I may not be as fast as these guys as quick, but I think these guys and the way I sit and you talk about your back back backpedal. And if you set a certain way guys think something maybe he can outsmart some of these younger guys, you think they can just outrun 'em. And that bodes well for him. So I think him being a seasoned veteran will help him. And I don't think it's more on the line of. Okay. He's thirty seven. I think it's more. Okay. He's a season guy has seen a lot of stuff that will help them. Now, we're gonna see Thirty-seven-year-old Andrew Whitworth. No, I am buying what that's a great point. Because the Tom Brady's of the world. Drew brees. Is these guys have made a judgments baseball players, right? Like, you don't you? You don't throw ninety eight miles an hour your whole career. It's key start nibbling the corner. So Andrew Whitworth is a very smart guy who understands the technique aspect of it. He's compensating for physical losses by improving technique. Does make sense cut off the angles this way rather than pure speed. Right. And and that's what the better guys who are who have these long lengthy careers is the reason why they can make it as long as they do you think about all these corners who played ten years in the league. And they saw it and then go to safety or a go and play in the deep hole because. Yeah, I'm not as fast, but I can see things I can recognize things a little bit faster where a guy doesn't run by me. It happens at every single position. And if you're smart enough, technique wise to understand what's happening before it happens. You can beat that guy to the punch, and that's why you. Bring a Brady who has done it. And it's been documented on the game's changed. They got these big, you know, divas a Lima who run four five now, they just going to run, you know, tackle Brady can't run outside the pike. All it's not all about that. He can move one way or another or we talked about it Peyton. Hey, he can see stuff happening before the ball snapped. So that gives him opportunity to get the ball out when he knows his arm has diminished. He can he can kinda know exactly predetermine. Okay. I can anticipate that they're going to bring a blitz. All this. I I got off coverage on the backside. I can take this easy hitch route and move on those are some of the things that when you get older in age these guys used to their advantage. When like you said you lost some of the physical attributes has helped you early in your career. Yeah. No question about to see what he does this year at thirty seven years old. All right. It was just I believe thirteen years ago DJ shot we got the invite to the combine now. Well, is it that important should players throw especially the quarterback position. We'll take a look at that. Next. EJ shock. We infrared Harrison I'm Dan Schwartzman on NBC sports radio. This is slash. And you're listening to NBC sports radio. WBZ new Bedford's news talk station..

"I think so. One. I saw Pat Shurmur I'm saying, well, that's the guy that goes plays golf a wing foot. That's perfect. He fits the giants a moniker. You kinda can see why they would hire Pat Shurmur. So now the question is who do you see or who do we see the jets hiring? What has to be someone that the jets don't normally higher? I mean, that's the point John the history with the giants is a hell of a lot different than the history with the jets, and it has to be someone with experience, and I think with an emphasis on the opposite side of the ball, which is the two things that the jets have not had in their head coaching hires in the last several decades. So I mean, that's why you know to me, it's it's almost unfortunate that John Harbaugh is still out there because that whole situation throwing it. But but you could see it as clear as day John Harbaugh as the head coach of the jets. You could see it clear as my goodness. Yeah. But you know, is he going to leave Baltimore. I mean, I just. And if this team goes on a run, and we'll have a clearer picture after the weekend. This team goes on the run. There's no way that after the this change at quarterback at some of the big wins a day had you came back, and you overtook the AFC north that they're going to part with him. I mean, I is the relationship that fractured is not that. The relationship is fractured. It basically Ozzie Newsome is stepping down. So now, they have a new GM coming in who's been there and not about their relationships. And the other thing that we don't know is what goes on in the building and the relationship with the owner and the players of the players listening still is is he tired of saying the same message to the same players. They have the Joe flacco issue hanging over their head. There's a million things that we are not privy to that. Push the pressure point. Deeper than the normal. And that's why I even though I'm trying to think who it is. Even though there are certain coaches out there. Mike zimmer? For instance, you're your coach he's willing to go into the final year of his contract without an extension. I can't imagine the wealthy family. Not giving him an extension. He's been a good coach for the Vikings. I don't care what you say. He's been you guys have been a I would say a successful team under his tutelage. Would you not say they have the right? So so I would think that he will get an extension, but that may not be the case in Baltimore. There may John Harbaugh may go to the owner and say look man, I want to have more control of the fifty three man roster. And if I don't get it, then I'm not gonna I'm not gonna come back. Well, how's that gonna work though, with Mike maccagnan, though, is if Mike maccagnan's truly the guy who is he may be using that to get out of there? Yeah. What's what I'm saying? So I don't know any of that stuff. And that's why all this stuff. It's fun to talk about because it's speculation. It's big it's big time personalities. I know he would be the perfect person to take over the New York Jets. He's just may not be available. That's all. Yeah. And that's why I think that I wish we knew for a fact that he wasn't availability was and if he wasn't and Mike McCarthy was at the top of the list for the jets, and that was the guy that we're going to zero in on then just blow them away financially. That's what what you would have to do that would be the break the tie. That would be the thing that he would say all right. I'm not going to sit out a year for seven million dollars. Because he we get paid seven million dollars. If he doesn't get another job. He comes here is gonna get paid at least ten. Right. So is telling you right now, he will be you'll be a bidding war between the Johnson family and Stephen Ross if that happens so the dolphins are they're they're thinking McCarthy as well. And. John. I'm saying if if Harbaugh ends up staying in Baltimore and McCarthy's at the top of the list, then I think it would become a bidding war between the Browns and the jets, and if the jets are going to break that tie or get ahead of the Browns. It would have to be with money because there's a prior relationship in Cleveland with McCarthy and Dorsey and Baker mayfield's ahead of Sam darnold right now. If I if I sitting here today, and I had to put on like my life future. Soothsaying glasses. You know, I kind of feel like today McCarthy could be the next head coach of the jets. That's how I feel. Yeah. Even though they haven't had the meeting yet or any of that other stuff because of Josh mcdaniels is that so gung ho for the Browns job. I. But it sounds like the Browns wanna keep Freddie kitchens. And if they're gonna keep Freddie kitchens as their offense coordinator, why would they bring in Josh mcdaniels Mike McCarthy either Mike McCarthy's a guy who, but I've been the thing about I'm telling you about Mike McCarthy that I think. Is this sentiment that I get from the people that are in this industry that may have spoken to him. And all this other stuff is that he is a guy that is a go along get along guy. He's not a guy that's going to be coming in like a tornado and trying to turn in tire building up. So he's also got a lot of pressure on them to because they knock on him leaving Green Bay was he wasn't able to get the best out of Aaron Rodgers fair or not that's the label on him. And he's going to say, all right? I'm gonna get the best that a Baker Mayfield. Well, that's why maybe it's a better fit with Sam darnold. Baker Mayfield is best. Dave a explosive personality. I would always say this. Know, I'm not going to sit here and blame Mike McCarthy for Aaron Rodgers failings. Mike McCarthy really didn't have anything to do with that fifty three man roster. I would say the fifty three man roster was a bigger problem than anything else. Look at the guys who are putting that together. And the other thing is that there has to be some responsibility placed the feet at Aaron Rodgers now Aaron Rodgers has got to also be willing to be coached willing to be selfless willing to be a leader. And not be what I believe he's kind of turned into a little bit of a diva like a little bit of a pain in the ass. You know, that's that's that's what big money and big fame. Does the people especially in the world of sports is we're seeing it all across the landscape sports. I mean, whether it be Antonio Brown or Aaron Rodgers or anybody else. You know, you want a guy that when he shows up that he's going to listen to the coach that he's going to be coach Abol that he's going to go out there. And he's gonna lead, by example, as opposed to talking through the media, and you know, who is the prime example of that this year anyway is Andrew luck. And I have direct knowledge of that. I know that I know how unselfish that kid is and how grateful he is to be back on the field and doing what he's doing and how much praise heaping everywhere else as opposed to taking on himself. So that's the kind of player that you want to be coaching. Carson wentz. Is that way? I know that as well. You know, that you want these guys that want to be on the field that want to be coached at one be given a roadmap that are gonna listen to you and are going to be respectful to you as a coach. And I think sometimes older players kind of lose that a little bit. I think that's a little bit of what's going on with Brady and Belichick over the last couple of years. Yeah. Check probably has been writing Brady for so long. They're pretty finally had enough of it doesn't give me credit, and it kind of came to a ahead a little bit, right? Like finally, can you give me some credit after all these years of what we've done together. Right. And now here they are again. Right. And believe you me, they are they are rooting for the colts. I'm not the called say are rooting. I'll tell you there. Rooting for their rooting for the Texans. Yeah. They want us to play the Texans. They do not want to see the colts art, boomer and geo. Just getting started on a.

"And he basically we spend a day together. I went to his house in Baltimore. It was amazing. You took me out on this boat. And we just talked about football for an entire day. And one of the things he said he talked about it because he obviously had called plays in Minnesota. And then he took the didn't call plays in Baltimore for for long stretches. Obviously he did. Sometimes, but he had this thing called the three AM real and the three I'm rule was that when you wake up and your head coach you need to be thinking about one thing. And what whatever that thing is needs to be you need to be blazer focused on it. And if you're calling plays, you're always automatically going to be focused on two things because there's always going to be something else. You're going to be distracted a little bit because you're trying to build an offense. And I only I that's sort of shaded my view on this thing. And I've always thought that maybe you shouldn't have the head coach calling plays. And now, I think that the offense is have changed so much to where obviously Andy Reid in Kansas City who who had stepped away from calling in Philadelphia, obviously, he's breaking the mode a little bit Sean McVeigh is Sean McVeigh. And so Sean Payton Doug Peterson Sean rate and magnate. It's a new era to where I think it's obviously okay to to not to call the place. Okay. But I think that if you can get away with not calling the plays. You should the only reason I ask because because Dan Quinn is now taking that over in Atlanta. Mike Zimmer does it in Minnesota. And if we don't normally hear as much about it, but it feels like people are going to are going back that way a little bit. I mean, the idea that Dan quintessentially said I'm the defensive coordinator. Now, we just as new that's new. So I remember when Mike McCarthy panicked after the NFC championship game and gave up play calling and then just four months in fired his offense coordinator took it back. Yes. Exactly. So it's just I don't know we hear about it all the time. We didn't mention Kyle Shanahan. Also with head coaches made some new era on offense. Yeah. And that's what I'm curious to see whether it will go to defense. I don't know the answer. I was just wondering if you had a thought on all right? So who you charge? The ravens ravens. Okay. We're both on that. It's tough for me to do. I like this chargers. Steve I picked him to go to the Super Bowl. I just think this ravens squad is a very bad matchup. And I think the ravens present an interesting challenge for everybody throughout the entire playoffs. And I think that's why they have a real shot to make a lot of noise. All right. Let's get to the fourth game of the weekend. The red hot Philadelphia Eagles who are six and four in their last ten games. Goto? The apparently not red hot Chicago Bears who are nine and one in their past ten games. You've already said that Nick foles is going to burn down the bears. Would you like to stick with that assessment?.

"And so they have no one else but themselves to blame. And I think they have to rebuild their offense and defensive lines. If they don't do that. I don't think it's never going to be the same. I think the Tony Sporanos death. This summer is unfortunate as it was the loser man that young and a good coach. He was I think that really was had did impact their team. I mean, you can replace players line coaches are hard to replace during the season, and I think that really caused them. But if I'm the Vikings of I'm Mike Zimmer or Rick Spillman. I'm I gotta fix these offense of defensive lines because until that gets fixed. Nobody else can really all. The skill. We have doesn't matter if we don't fix the line. And a lot of people are pointing to the fact that one of the reasons Washington and not want to keep her cousins of apparently, this was the leak, you know, report was that Embiid games. He didn't quite show up. Obviously, you mentioned the fully guaranteed contract of eighty four million in this game. The the problem was on third down on Kirk cousins was not able to find a way to figure out how to get around some of these third Q miscue third-down miscues Amine overthrew Savan digs on the initial third down in this game the bears get an early lead. And you know, you could just see that the crowd was starting to turn turn on him as he was unable to get some of these things to go through. So as much as people are pointing to Kirk cousins like you said that deal is done. He will be the quarterback in Minnesota. That is not necessarily the focal point. That is holding them back. Even though it seemed like on this day, everyone can point occurs. Cousins and say that was the problem. A lot of the Minnesota players and coaches and staff to the game were asked about the security of Mike Zimmer they all said that is there guys that that that has nothing to be concerned with about Mike Zimmer being on the hot see with this team. Like, you said they have to shore up those oftens of indefens- of lines to figure out really who they are as a team. Should we move onto some of these the head coaching vacancies some of the bigger stories as we push into the off season?.

"It's never been easier. To throw the ball. We have to star receivers. We have a quarterback that now makes thirty plus million dollars. We drafted a running back two years ago in the second round that could have been a first round pick the can really catch the football. And we don't have a good blocking offense of line. Throw the football yet. He was adamant we we've fire John D flip. Oh, we gotta run the ball. Run the ball run the ball. So he goes in the biggest game of the year. We tried to run the ball. Yanked gonna run it. On Khalil Mack on Keam Hicks on roquan Smith on Danny trevathan on Leonard Floyd. Those guys are going to kick your ass. And then they're going to kick your ass some more Mike Zimmer living like a Dan dinosaur thinking that it's still nineteen Ninety-six deserve to get his ass kicked. If you're listening to this on Tuesday two days ago, it was his own. Fault for the archaic thinking refuse to think outside the box refused to admit and embrace. What is working in today's environment at home to lose that game embarrassing? I think you could justify firing Mike Zimmer right now, you know, I got to give a little credit where credit is due. I did not like their draft pick. Anyone that listen to the show knows that I am not big on running backs really high in the draft. I'm definitely not big on guard really high, but I'll take my hat occurs valor. And Andrew luck. And the colts organization to me this year was a muscle flex for two people one. I would say, you know, typically GM's don't get crazy buzz like over a period of two or three years and become the next Kyle Shanahan. Kyle kind of became an Atlanta. Adam gays was actually that guy before Miami hired him. You know, Pat Shurmur had a lot of buzz a couple years ago or. Just last year. Now, the giants head coach it's harder for GM's because we don't quite feel if you're not the assistant GM or the player personnel guy, or the college director is hard tell what you're really doing. But everyone that falls the NFL at heard the name, Chris Bala. I personally have never met him. I'm friends in no people with the chiefs that swear by them. I know Matt Nagy loves them vs loves them. Coterie love them. They all spoke highly of. But until you really know what a guy is doing. It's hard to quite quantify with a quarterback. It's pretty it's pretty easy. Right. It's black and white. I I never understood the Andrew luck haters. And maybe it's just as simple as in life. People resent greatness. Like, the dude was great in college. He gets rafted number one Ryan Grigson who I've worked with which was laughable when he was hired as the GM arguably go down as the worst general manager in NFL history. Almost ruined this great player. He took that team. He took Ryan Grim into the playoffs. Three times. Chuck pagano. Who somehow getting interviews? I wouldn't hire. Chuck Pagano is my head coach with a ten foot pole. But you know, Chuck pagawa was head coach Andrew luck overcame at all then this year with the help of Chris Ballard because I tip my hat to Chris Ballard, and maybe I. Should've thought about like the way I looked at the way they're draft had kind of the way they approached it you had to protect Andhra. I kind of get it. Now, maybe I shouldn't have been so stubborn like you can have you know, kind of hard hard set and concrete rules in life. But sometimes you have to be flexible too. You know, I wouldn't take running backs in the first round but saquon Barkley Zeke Elliott's I do get it that when you look at what Andrew luck accomplish this year with the help of Ballard and even. Josh mcdaniels left. Chris Ballard at the alter it still to this day. And we may never see anything quite like it again is one of the craziest things we ever seen in sports the end up with Frank rich. They start one in five Andrew early on. You know, as it should of hadn't played in a year and a half. He was coming off multiple shoulder. Injuries looks rusty. But for them to finish. What are they ten and six the sixty they're playing the Texans which they're getting two and a half points..

"Okay. What is going on John little cough renowned podcast reporting live late afternoon as I record this on a Monday also known around NFL circles as black Monday people been getting fired left. And right. I woke up this morning to the news of Mike Mayock being hired. Tons of thoughts here on black Monday on the coaches and just on everything going on. I'm gonna dive into that in one second also going to dive into Mike Zimmer looks like I was on the right side of history. Went on ran a couple of weeks ago about firing John D Filipo. It turns out the dinosaur. Kind of poked his his ugly head again yesterday in Matt Nagy in Vic Fangio and Khalil Mack. Intimacy took them to the woodshed obviously playoffs. We have the matchups Brady. I think you can't get much. Better. Just top to bottom of the games. We have on Saturday and Sunday all dive into some my thoughts their college football playoffs had some big takeaways. What what a what an awesome day in theory and then the actual game start. But you know, if you were gambling, and you fold my advice, I had Notre Dame getting rolled had Oklahoma keeping it within the fourteen points. I'm trying to make money here. And then I'm going to do a little game called word association. I'm gonna go through every team on both conferences the one through six seeds in the playoffs. And just the first word that comes to my mind kind of little radio e type segment, but it just trying to mix it up a little bit. And then we'll end with the middlekauff mail bag. You can always get in the middlekauff mailbag to slide up into my DM's at John middlekauff on Instagram. Try to do it for the kids here on Instagram slide up into my DM's, but let me start with something black Monday happen. And what did we see? All the coaches got fired. But none of the GM's got fired. I know Mike Mayock was just introduced a couple of thoughts on that here in a second. But Reggie McKenzie had been fired for a long time among our plus. But you look at the jets you look at the cardinals you'll go the buccaneers, obviously the Browns the Packers Jim safe. I started thinking why do coaches get fired, but general managers don't like think about that? All these coaches are fired. A none of the gentleman's lose their job. When you looked at the New York Jets, Mike mcalinden who hired Todd Bowles they came in at the same time built a roster that Jamal Adams yesterday, basically called the entire roster. I don't think he was including Sam darnold, but every other player on the team gutless heartless said we have no dogs. Steve kind the general manager for the. Arizona Cardinals started the season off first off he hired Wilks in one of the big stories when he hired Steve Wilks was they had like met over the offseason the previous year when they were on vacation in like the Gulf of Mexico or something they met on a beach. Both worked in the NFL start talking had a friendship, and that's how it all started. He got a DUI in the summer this off season. I guess it's still two thousand eighteen on the fourth of July. I'm recording this on New Year's Eve, if you a DUI on the fourth of July or on New Year's Eve, two things, you're either alcoholic or your idiot. Worst case you're combination of the two. So if you're a multimillionaire, and you get a D wide he had a bad DUI and people like what do you mean a bed? Do you? I hope you is all now you can put context things in bad things in the context. Not all DUI's created equal when you blow like three o on fourth of July. That's an awful DUI. When you go point. Oh, wait on Wednesday afternoon after a work meeting. Yeah. I mean, it's a bad decision. But I look at it a little differently..

"Both those teams feel like there is sending teams and both those teams frankly have better and more durable quarterbacks. Next up the Cleveland Browns at fifteen Browns on the upswing. It doesn't sound like Greg Williams has a great chance at the head coaching job. Or Freddie kitchens? I think I've said this before Brian I'll say it again, two pretty big risk pretty big risks. They're taking by potentially hitting the reset button on both offense and defense. I mean, they're really rolling right now things are going well, and they're going to all of a sudden just hit the reset button on both. But it appears likely that that's what they're going to do. Number fourteen. Minnesota vikings. Very disappointing season for the Vikings. Obviously just hard to believe that they weren't able to get that done on Sunday. We'll see if they make any changes to the coaching staff or elsewhere sounds like Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer are both back Zimmer's been clear. He's not resigning. He's not retiring. So he doesn't want to go anywhere else. Although there is some speculation that maybe the Bengals would be interested in Mike Zimmer and he's from Kentucky. And you know, maybe he would be ready to for a change thirteen the Steelers. So clearly a lot of discord there in Pittsburgh. The latest news is that Antonio Brown didn't play in the last game. Not because of a knee issue. But instead because he threw a ball at Ben Rothlisberger at a practice on Wednesday. You know, he didn't show up for practice. The next couple of days thought he still playing the game. They didn't let them play in the game. I really dislike hearing stuff like this. I hate when star players started acting like this. It's just really really disappointing. I don't know the inner workings. What happened? Maybe he was just upset that juju. Smith Schuster was voted the MVP instead of him. I know this wide receivers get very protective of their standing as the number one guy on the team. I can remember that with Eric moulds and Lee Evans, very protective number twelve the Dallas Cowboys. So here we are. Now, we get to the playoff teams. It's weird. Cowboys ten wins Cowboys playing very well. Right now. I it's they just happened to be number twelve. I think because of what the eagles have done lately, you know, beating teams like the Texans. The Rams eagles just on a roll now with Nick foles, but the Cowboys they have their opportunity Saturday night should be an excellent game against the Seahawks. Very much very much looking forward to it. Both teams run the ball festively. I think ultimately. And we'll talk about this later in the week bribe. Ultimately, I think you know, decor back plays probably the difference..
LA Rams beat Minnesota Vikings 38-31
"In the man cave. One of the things that's being talked about is. What happened in the the Rams showdown against the Minnesota Vikings? And what in the world is going on? This is a hint as to what happened one of the world is going on with the Minta soda Vikings. They are not what they were billed to be. And I used to cover Mike Zimmer who's the coach of the Vikings really like him when he was a coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys and boy the Vikings go out they pay a fortune for Kirk cousins. And it's it's not working out quite the way they were hoping and part of the reason is because they ran into a hot ran ram team and Jared Goff here. Listen to this connection for golf. What? Goth throws over the middle. Touchdown. What ties franchise record? Touchdown pass of the cave haram style lead thirty seven twenty eight thirty seven twenty eight thanks to the Westwood One radio network for that it was the Rams over the Vikings thirty eight thirty one and the end Jared Goff who was the young quarterback for the Rams twenty six of thirty three four hundred sixty five yards and five TD's Todd Gurley. Philadelphia Eagles, Vikings and Kirk Cousins discussed on Skip and Shannon: Undisputed
"Kirk cousins made his Vikings debut on Saturday and Denver, and look, radio only played one series, but when a perfect four, four, including touchdown, pass to step on days. Last week we should report put the Vikings number one in their preseason power rankings, and we are now joined by vox NFL analyst and former Viking, Greg, jenning. Thank you for joining us on this Monday. This is an easy question for me, but I like your opinion, is Minnesota the best team in the NFL? No, they are not. No, they're not. Philadelphia Eagles are the best team in National Football League. There are most recent Super Bowl champion. They have not done anything that leads me to believe they did not get better. They did not improve going back to the Vikings. However, if if I were to rank them, I would rank them one to somewhere around there. The NFC is so cluttered at the top right now. There's there's so many great teams that have great potential vite the Vikings being one of them. Obviously, we saw where they ended up last year. But here's why I say that they're not when you take a quarterback in case keenum who let's say he was a b to a b, plus quarterbacks his with his performance with this performance. Then you, you take him, you remove him and you insert Kirk cousins. You don't gain that much. You get better in my opinion, but you don't gain enough to where I can just automatically say you're the best team. Now, when I look at the way they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in that NFC championship game, if they have Kirk cousins, do they win? I don't think so. So I don't give them the throne just yet. They have to prove it in their schedule will let us know real soon whether or not they can handle being one of the bullies in the NFL right now they have a, they have great depth. I love their coach. Probably one of my favorite coaches in the NFL right now and Mike Zimmer. I think his mentality, his approach his his way that he has shifted the kosher there. It's permeated through every single player. Only the players, but the people within the organization, just his approach to the game in his approach to winning. And I don't think that you can just dethrone the Philadelphia Eagles with the moves that they made in acquiring Mike Wallace lowly, NADA, Michael Bennett. All these other guys, acquisitions, let alone they get Carson wins back at some point this season. And that last point. This is why say yes, gift, because I don't know the health status of Carson Wentz currently, and you look at what Minnesota's done with this. You look at their delight limb Bill Joe's Everson Griffen Harrison Smith Kendrick bar. They're loaded defensively offensively. Now they had they were, I think, pro football focus. Bleacher reports. They had the number one receiving core with the day. Rudolph bring down and cook back down and cope with having an unbelievable year before he went down. Now the the thing that separates them that a no break. Owner, if Phillies line is good, as we got next Dallas, they might have the second best offense of land. I believe Kirk cousins is substantial upgrade over case keenum substantial.
