"mike trout." Discussed on The Lead

"When my trout signed his record breaking contract with angels two years ago some people were surprised because the best player in baseball was choosing to stay with a team that had only made the playoffs once in a decade and didn't look like it was getting a lot better anytime soon since then things have arguably gotten worse with the angels finishing below five hundred for the past two seasons one one-two-three three the angels done dodgers five number and all of this has people wondering could trout loyalty be causing him a shot at a world series title. The angels are generic kind of baseball team to imagine if he was in in in playing center on that. And i don't today. The athletics are dia on mike. Trout's commitment to the angels. The questions around his will to win the world series and whether the angels are finally building a contender around him from wondering and the athletic. I'm under scelzo. It's wednesday april twenty first and this is the lead so you recently wrote about the day that might trout signed his historic deal with the angels back in twenty nine. Can you take us back to that day. And that ceremony outside angel stadium. Yeah i mean it was a big day and so they had fans there. They had a lot of people. Were sort of lining up more than our before a packed house. as you. watch the ballpark that day. See like just solve. Everything was with my trust face. The photo and were loyalty was about. His contract is a statement of commitment a commitment to the organization commitment to winning this story of loyalty. Mike a little bit emotional lavi guys. Thanks ross who lose idea of knowing that he was sort of where he wanted to be for the rest of his career something that came a little bit real my teammates and coaches. I want thank you guys. You guys push me hard every day. You keep me humble you. Let me know when. I'm when i'm wrong. I think he talked about wanting to win. And do it so anaheim. You guys have been unbelievable. And just i wanna be a championship back to anaheim. Let's go very obviously. There's a lot of loyalty goes into that. Obviously it's a big part of everything. We've known about mike trout. Since the moment he really burst onto the scene. I mean the fact that he's had one agent is entire career. He married his high school. Sweetheart i he still lived as parents house for years after he won. Mvp award Solich this everything we've known about this guy and all of a sudden here. He is staying for the richest contract in baseball history. Well i mean you. Recently did a long interview with mike trout and among other things you talked about his past what did you learn about the way that his family and his upbringing shaped him. I mean he's sort of the same might trout that he's been since he was a kid. I think that's it. Goes back to like how he was raised. Being oil and full is brought up all perspective on honesty respect and loyalty or you know pretty. Close this hometown. Slow means a lot to him. He built a house out there in the which is anyone who willingly wants to spend winters new jersey. Obviously that means that you have a connection to the area. I mean that's where he met his wife. I mean that's where he's still feels like he can have a chance to be mike. I go back to jersey. It's kinda like a baseball player. You know i'm in the big leagues and people get that. But they treat me. And i think that's that's big to me. He wants to be good to the people who are good to him. And that's the only that he's continued to do even now as he's the best player in the game i've written about in the past where he sort of has tradition where every spring report for training. He would show up to his old high school and instead of having his number one jersey retired he would go back. Meet the new captains the new senior captains each year and give the number two that i think his childhood and the ability to help others is something that has been ingrained in him from a really early age in doing so just because it's the right thing to do not because it's sort of the thing that makes them look the best so no one seems to question trout's willingness to do the right thing or his loyalty but some people have questioned. How badly might trout really wants to win. A world series perhaps because of his decision to resign with the angels when he could have basically gone anywhere he wanted. What are your thoughts on that. Fabian as you spoke to people from his past and people who work with him today what did you learn about my trout's competitive nature. Yeah high school baseball coach roy. Hornbeck wanted to show people is. It's hard to show. How competitive guy is when he's standing out and sara field all the time so what he would tell. Scouts was just sort of go. Watch a basketball game know. He's at the time. Six one lady to our gas jumps center and you sort of saw him scrapping rebound and don't over guys at a guy was dunking. I'm pretty young age like obviously a very good athlete. Billy just to see him. Compete against guys worth three four inches taller. Probably have a little bit wait on them and he held his own sure four running for helping to eight of his like he's a really competitive guy and he will try to win at just about anything. Khan who is a former angels reliever. Mike offered him a stay at his house. In huntington beach over the course of the shutdown part of that time like they just kill time. Doing all kinds of these competitions off all can kong a contest. See it a my quickest somewhere michael. Kahn told me like mike trout. One fifty straight games scrabble and stuff like that. He would try to do whatever he can to win. Just one of those guys that challenge deep down just facing doug it that luck into saying i'll show you how good i can see the viral top. Golf shot he hit last spring. Albert fools is a charity golf event in scottsdale arizona. Drink spring training last year. All kinds of major league baseball players. Were there just turnovers. Their cody bellinger was there. And you can sort of see like everyone sort wants to one up other. Because he's a really competitive guys and you might trout sort of step ups at t and looks back like watch. This takes a swing. Hit sort of see. The ball vaporized domes and they've confirmed since that the ball went not just to the back. Net went over the back net which would be more than three hundred yard drive. Not just the talent physical gifts that this guy has also. If i think he's gonna wanna win by any means necessary to my what it is. You think the fact that he's just kind of like a down to earth regular guy and doesn't have mississippi the most like showy personality. Do you think that that leads to more criticism or suspicion. About how competitive. He really is his personality a little bit. The cause of these claims that maybe this doesn't really want to win that badly. Maybe that's part of it the fact that he won't go out and like trash organization or say hey like this is ridiculous. We need clean this up. We need to win. He's been asked every which way you can. Just sorta.

"So dan. i want you to help. Explain exactly how wild this year has been for sports cards with an example and that example that sticks out to me and shocks me every time i consider it. Is this record setting. Mike trout card. Can you tell me a little bit about the card itself. So it's a it's a two thousand nine bowman chrome super factor dan. Hey ducky is a writer and researcher for espn and a card collector. Himself it's got autograph on a autograph on grated. Basically there are three companies professionals Authenticator beckett s g c they grade. How perfect on a scale of one to ten a. Carter's so this might trump card is a nine so it's pretty. It's pretty close to perfect but the autograph is greeted at ten. So it's really close to perfect card can awesome. It's a trap route card also on top of that. It's a one of one so there is only one of these in existence yet. It's so interesting because mike trout in public is like a semi anonymous celebrity like a lot of fans casual fans and sports. Even don't really know him. But this card this one of one card with the perfect autograph. What did actually go for went for nine. hundred million. A new record has been set for the most valuable baseball card in history. Somebody paid three point. Nine million dollars for this mike trout rookie card. I know that when joe maddon was confronted with the information that he had a player who's card solta that much giving like. How much does the mona lisa goes for. Wow i'm into art. That puts him right up there with the mona. lisa's self. For what what is anything by a davinci or wow that is. That's that's pretty. That's pretty phenomenal. And it's actually. It's like yeah. I mean that's disappear question. And what was the previous record holder in terms of the most valuable card that had ever been sold at auction. The previous holy grail. Was you know the the honus wagner keys who six said turn of the century the twentieth century like early nineteen hundreds heart on. It's such a lower behind it. That's not happening with mike trump there. There's no incredible backstory to have his card exists. It's it's modern. It's not easy to obtain but it's not it's not like tobacco card that was pulled from from production really what happened to wagner was once thought is that wagner didn't like that he was being used his likeness is being used to sell tobacco the kids so he objected a pulled the card from production and that was that the other less known school of thought is that wagner he wouldn't be compensated for his likeness so he objected because he wouldn't be paid and the facts the truth which is a i like this story better it would be the like the earliest flexing of brand autonomy. It is remarkable what you say though the difference between his honus wagner card which does like looking at it. I'm looking at it right now on my screen. It's like this historical american artifacts that reminds me of like a daguerreotype from like the civil war or something it looks important and ancient and the trout card. The fact that this object can be worth more than any other thing that came before in modern times and the guy who sold this. Mike trout card dan for this terrifyingly large amount is a man named ken golden. So tell me a little bit more about him. What's the business that guy runs. Golden is ken. Golden golden auctions diammonium. Sins loan out nike sneaker. How much does that they work can in your eyes to me. It's definitely a six-figure iconic piece it is the most famous pair of sneakers in the world. Then he remains arguably the most renowned auction house for remember billion sports

Mookie Betts makes history with another 3-home run game

"So mookie betts last. Night Raby. Three homers Ford does in a game for the sixth time in his career Johnny. Sammy Sosa the only other players do that and movie didn't in a thousand fewer games basically in Mayes and fifteen hundred fewer than So when you look our call you red sox fan but you grew up there for goodness sakes and you see mookie bats, the red sox traded away it off to a start like this and avenue another three homer game. What do you think? Well I. Think it happens on the same day that the red sox give up seventeen runs and look at a single late in the Celtics and Bruins I think both lost and the Patriots are going to start a season without Tom Brady I think this is I think this is a reminder of the come up in Boston sports fans are are about to have to deal with and the next few years now I mean look it's It's a tough pill to swallow for red SOx nation to know that. One of the transformational players of his generation in an era when Mike Trout is playing mu batches is going to be in the conversation. You know there's there's a Jack Nicklaus Arnold. Palmer. Gary Player. There's the Tiger Woods Phil. Mickelson for Awhile, David Duval conversation. I, mean my child's GonNa. Have you know mookie Betts in Clayton Kershaw and that's what this group is going to be about and to know that he was once part of your franchise and now he's not and a franchise paid him a lot of money and you believe your franchise and was capable of doing the same. For those that are moving in dying with the Red Sox I know it sucks. It really really does it's It's just a it's just a reminder and he's got to be that guy we all grew up with them that. Whatever he does he does to a level that few others can do it. So the three six times you know that's the same guy that has four. That's the same guy that bowls three hundred games. He does those things and and there'll be no surprise. You know when he wins more world series wins MVP's that's that guy he's the guy we all grew up with he's just doing it at the highest athletic level.

The Mookie Betts decision could haunt the Boston Red Sox for a long time

"It didn't take very long for mookie bats. He didn't even suit up for the regular season game for the dodgers yet. He's got that tonight against the giants, and they signed him to a twelve year extension for three hundred sixty five million dollars, so he's twenty seven years of age. This is a lifetime deal in La. Certainly Senate notice to the rest of the National League. We mean business here. We're going to be competitive for a long time. On the flip side if you're a red sox fan, because it feels like this was the the Red Sox said. Hey, you know what or last year. Hey, we're going to regroup and try to come back with a vengeance here in a couple of years and there was thought that maybe mookie Betts would end up back with the red sox. At some point. He started his career there. beloved there, but the front. Office didn't commit to him financially. And now the deal's going to be a referendum on both of these franchises. We move forward. If vets delivers the dodgers win, they're gonNA look great in the Red Sox are going to be reminded of the one that got away for at least the next decade, but you never know about these big deals I would never want to sign a player for more than five years. I would just be nervous about that. Just playing the odds of you staying healthy you staying competitive of the cost that goes along with that athlete there. But. We see this with a lot of these baseball players. You sign him up if it's Mike Trout and if it's Bryce, Harper if it's Garrett Cole you want to lock them in, and also there's going to be a question. mookie Betts, no longer in that hitter, friendly fenway park fans in both cities are going to keep a close eye on mookie and his performance in La. La should be one of the more intriguing subplots in this unusual season, and if you look at the numbers with Mukhi Bats, you know my feelings about Mookie Betts. He was must see TV when he was playing for the Red Sox and that will be the same implying the dodgers i. just don't know if you'll be the same style of player that he was at fenway. then. He's going to be that at dodger stadium if you start to look at the numbers since twenty sixteen where mookie Betts ranks. And I know that we think my trout, the coronation, your best player in baseball in the future hall of fame, absolutely no problem with that. mookie Betts. Was the east. Coast version of Mike Trout from the standpoint of he could do everything. and. He's getting paid to do everything now a runs. Nobody scored more runs since two thousand sixteen hits third doubles I. Even home runs. He's not a home run hitting guy. He's five nine one eighty and five nine, one eighty. Thank you thank you? Nineteenth in home runs. You look at RBI's. He's up there. He's you know. He's in the top ten in stolen bases batting average. You always hear that phrase. Oh it's going around it ever never going around. It's just always consistently going around. Yes I don't think this is going around though. I think it just seems to have stuck on Stugatz. His voice box allergies can start in some places as early as January rights allergy season. I mean my voice. It seems like it's like normal today had some flam early on but I've always seems texts all weekend from people asking his guts all right based on whatever it is they heard from you last week. It was multiple people asking me if you were okay. Okay I'm okay. Thank you everyone. I went to a doctor. I gotTA checked out. He said I'm fine billy. What do you have for me on the Astros needing to shut up? I don't remember. They just should stop talking. A what do you mean why you're done with it now? Yeah I mean they're saying all these things because there's no consequences for anything. They say now their feelings hurt because people know they're cheaters. Stop talking you can't get offended. You got no punishment that's it. I like what Alex Korea had to say. I mean he was defending Carlos Correa. I'm sorry by fine two dollars. I I like what he had to say. I mean he's defending Jose L. Tubay he's telling people. Hey you don't know all the facts. I'm okay with that. Like he is defending guy on his team who he thinks. He's a really good player. Who wanted nothing to do with you? Know the hitting of trash cans to alert him. What was coming on the wrong with that. That maybe cheaters. Stola world series and now people are mad. You deal with it. The end one of the fact but one of that part is true and not being represented. What part the OUTTA vapours? Okay but altuve is still benefited from all his teammates cheating because people get on base because they know the pitch that are coming he won a world series because they won games he won an MVP because they've won more games as a team. Where if they would've lost ten or fifteen more games he may not have won the MVP so he may not have been doing it every single at bat and he may not have liked it but he's still benefited from the fact that his teammates were cheating. He may benefit from it. But it is important for someone to point out that Jose altuve was not indeed partaking. What everyone else was partaking it? That's important to me. I don't know what he was partaking in and wasn't partaking in but because all of them benefited from this and all of them are under a cloud of suspicion. I feel like any skepticism that you direct toward anybody when you look at what happened. For example they they went from having a ton of strikeouts to being first in the league. In not striking out they had the highest O. P. S. on fastballs they had the highest O. P. S. on breaking pitches like they knew what was coming. I don't know which one of them's which one of them knew and didn't know what was coming but they knew what was coming. I WanNa read. Watch some of these games. Because you're they're trying to say al Qaeda and participate. Okay so if I watched some of those Astros Games back you mean to tell me. I'm not going to hear someone banging on a trash can or I am. And he's just making the moral decision to not listen to the trash can being banged on. I've been that's what gray is saying. Is Carlos Correa needs to stop. He was actually coming out looking. Good on this. And he's done a full one. Eighty Mike I realize most of them were cheating but if L. to a was not cheating and I think he mentioned two other guys that we don't know all the facts that it is important to get out there that I'll to wouldn't partake understand what you're saying to God's but you can't trust these people it's like you telling the truth and you have earned all the skepticism that we believe at every turn. You're not telling the truth like I don't have a cray is not saying. Hey none of us did it. He saying most of us did it but there is one guy who didn't do it. I I actually find that believable but students okay. It's baseball though. Let's just say and we have to suspend disbelief for this. Let's say they weren't banging on trash cans or if they were altuve as tuning it up or be is. He's he's hitting when people are on base. I'm not saying absolutely benefiting from other people cheating. I'm not saying he himself isn't regarding what they're doing. I'm not saying he wasn't aided a mud saying he didn't benefit up saying if he didn't take it it it's important for someone that but he's hitting directly indirectly. He didn't stop it and he deserves criticism for that. He didn't stop it as a team leader. One of the best players in baseball but what grade is saying is he didn't do it but he's batting runners at our cheating okay again. He did. Stop Ronan circles. Here are some of the point out that L. to did not do it and he's not it's not important the astros though but they need to accept that they're not going to be the victims of this which they have not accepted yet because they still somehow think that they're the aggrieved here and they're clearly not. They're not sorry that people don't like you anymore. Sorry that people aren't sucking up to you anymore. Sorry that everybody hates you now. But you did this to yourself. I guess it can be victims if someone gets legitimately hurt which is an absolute chance. Now because they botched this from the get-go and other players are gonNA take this into their own hands. Why because that's baseball? They've been taken into their own hands since game was created. I also find a mighty convenient and now everybody's buck enough for Jose. Altuve like wait a second the guy won the MVP. He didn't do it. He's the one guy that was standing on his own and say. I'M GONNA play the game the right way and clubhouse full of cheaters. We've got the one guy who's disturbing example of not cheating but also money..

"What's up guys. Welcome back to the arctic. I'm your host yard. Mcandrew and we are back with another podcast. We took a little bit of a break but i'm here now with my guy peyot. Heo and we're gonna be talking about some stuff having around league. Somebody has gone too good to be back on. I took a little bit of a break but we're back now <hes> before before we get into this episode. Make sure you guys follow us on instagram twitter at the artwork he subscribed does an idea and follow us on the net now. Let's get into the show. I the first thing i wanted to address is a two guys are having crazy good years. I think the first guy that's gonna get the honor is a pita lonzo so yeah mean pylons number last year. All these mets fans are talking to me and they were like we got this guy in the system. They should just bring them up but they're like they're talking about like they want to save his control troll like again next year contract and i was like all right man he's hitting home runs in the minors but they play in vegas flies out there but i mean the sky hasn't stopped. Men are talking about peter lonzo last year and he was like he's like twenty four twenty five as he went to college. He went to college at university. The of florida's kind of established should've been raking in the minor leagues. Yes we're talking about last year. I was like i don't know i'm like you don't really hear about guys who are like super a good super good careers except really judge lately that began pulled up at twenty four twenty five for pete alonzo's having that judge asked rookie year hitting fittings fortieth home run the other night help carry them to a play-offs man because i remember the last time we were on this. We were talking about the mets kind of saying what the hell of a method doing and we sit here. I mean if we were here week ago like last week i would be saying the mets play off. They were super hot. There were like fourteen fifteen last week. Yeah they're cooling off but i mean it definitely made up. Some great did make some grants funny because last time we were on the show we were like what are the mets do stroman we're doing. We're like a guest. I think they have a chance tober and we're just just laughing. Although it's a silly joke and now the mets have a real shot again. That wildcard spot a second wildcard spot. It's gonna be interesting to see but i think it's tough when you're the guy that you really need to lead leisure team as a rookie. I like that that's so tough yeah. They'd just lost macneil. Macneil went on the <hes>. It's gonna be tough yeah. I mean he's doing in a real great job he wanted like we said he's kinda older. I think he's doing a real good job with like this leadership role but it's kind of tough when it aside from the pitchers the the leader of this team i i would say conforto her the pita lonzo yeah. I'd agree that guy excessiveness because he's not in the lions been hurt. I mean you you put a guy like that at least on the young guys if somebody up to more somebody who's been there before but these guys really haven't been there and and if you think about it though a bunch of guys on the mets that were either like like like veteran guys feel like aren't like playing super weller. They're getting her like robbie casinos stuff like that or they don't play every day like todd frazier but the guy is that kind of dupleix day or first year mets players at least wilson rama's yeah. Judy davis a. p. alonzo really <music> except for like every day. Guys conforto. I feel like is had resigned. Yes but it's rosario of everyday guys really play. You know coming back. It's only really conforto and i feel like the rookies have ruined a real good job of stepping. I mean even even <hes> mcneil and he's kind of an you know the guy to. They really stepped up this year so i think that's the big thing for the mets. It wasn't the guys who they brought in. It was how they're they're like. Newer guys or org. I didn't really hear about before are actually playing this year. Even mcneil to like me neo came up last year again like an older rookie babysit over three hundred men. They were all. You're saying we got this mcneil. He's pretty old right yeah twenty six on the oldest. I'm not sure exact ages but yeah i. I think they're doing a i think. One of the mets did do is that they waited. Wait if these guys like super mature and like they kind of kind of act like they've been in the league for more than the justice here. I mean it's kind of interesting to the mets amer. They drafted somebody. He's like almost twenty year old high school kid coming out of high school so i mean maybe that's their philosophy that doc this guy four or five years in the mind forty years. Maybe the miners will come up when he's twenty four. They love the kids who get held back. They love their favorite. What's your s._a._t. Score it's like twelve. We're drafting. You accept the highschool celtic so they ship them up so i know you are good s._a._t. Score you finish in four years. Are you going to seattle or whatever but <hes> yeah. I'm actually still a super surprise with them. That's n._p._r.'s lonzo. I think yeah i think he he needs. I think he's got a lot of credit for rejoin but i feel like it's a lot of individual credit but i think he's he's like it's crazy to say that he's kind of like glue this team. I would say as the glue guys it's crazy. How like a rookie like that by really do think he is but i do. I do think p lonzo with all due respect. There's yeah i think he over. He overshadowed tat tease junior league rookie of the year. I know tease out of the year now but i mean that can have phenomenal phenomenal year as well. I think if like any of us in like over three hundred twenty something like i think the thing is with fernando totti's junior if you ask me. She's she's just so cool. I think every kid wants to be fernando time these junior i it's not that it's taking shots at peter lonzo b.'s people onto your i'm jay this crash your office job. He gets a good. He's like you look void like you guys love. Him could just a regular dude. <hes> here's a regular dude alonzo so that can smash the crap out of a baseball but fernando tozzi <unk> is twenty years old from fly balls. I remember like secular yeah second. Be jason kam kamala guys making incredible play's that's short. He's got the hair. He's got the sunglasses. He's a cool dude but a i thought he was rookie of the year you're obviously he got hurt and my prediction from before the year was fernando tozzi sooner. I'm a little upset that i think not going to happen because a strong second because he if you play the the full year i really do think got. He got hurt once before yeah. That's true but i think if alonzo it's fifty. It doesn't matter can't if if alonzo didn't win give year. I think the like isn't isn't the mets has ingo season record. I think it's forty seven. I'm not sure i'm pretty sure i'll i'll pass it then. If it's forty forty four and earned i'm bridget's angels record is forty seven trout at forty two nats and that brings us to the next guy. We have to talk about mike trout route. The guys absolutely unreal <hes> he's the m._v._p. Of this season <hes> no no doubt about it. I mean he's trying to just running circles around his own numbers. I mean it's when you compare him to make his career high for it to him run crazy. He's got a better season this year than he'd probably ever going to be as best season and it's and it's crazy because i remember like in the beginning of the year. A few people were texting me saying like it was like it was like the fourth day of the season and like trout having an off of year. Now's like there was. There's so many things wrong with that sense because i saw even of. Let's say it was later in the year like right now and mike char actually was having an off off year trout off still pry better than like ninety five percent of the m._l._b. Off years still he's still going to start in the all star giving speeding maybe to ninety yeah yeah. I'm and maybe like thirty. Five home runs off your for mitrokhin. Exactly there is no such thing for this guy. He's absolutely absurd at i mean he's having one of his best tisco season yet. There's no down my mind he would've m._v._p. For next season just just based on how good this season was he. I think he's lock. I don't see a real competitor. Now can leak. I mean i do think bregman is a is a good second. I'm going to be honest. I really i really was rooting rooting for bregman. I'm a huge trout guy. Of course you know i do love. Bregman have bregman guys on the podcast was rooting for him but i don't no i don't think he didn't catch trout but you know what bregman you competing for another ring man and bregman your beast and we love you out of your love you long islanders. Love love bregman another guy. You're talking about appreciative another some crazy as a kunia man and i'd like it just bothers me because if i yell itch and bellinger weren't having the crazies like right under three hundred thirty five home runs and he stolen thirty basis do but it's it's the same thing with bregman like if it wasn't trout always first or second except for the last year i think he was fourth in the all star going like bregman would it would it's bregman endeavors right now two and three that that's insane to make the all star team. I know he's corey would like to have those two guys guys like you would have been. It would have been so cool seeing those guys battle it out for the m._p. But it just it's kind of tough being american league when you have trout yet. It's take always chasing lebron man the right to say. It's almost like being like a western conference basketball before this year the you always chasing the warriors might trout it essentially the warriors that makes sense. Hey got the point across yeah. I mean he's having a filthy year. I i need a sea trout a little bit of a tough credit calm because he's like my favorite play. I need to see not just a playoff berth but win. A playoff series series not even a wildcard game l. Let's see like how you can do. I mean like i remember like that. The whole thing iran man the near on finally actually against the in two thousand nine men that you need one of those sears performances where it just puts it all does get on if he doesn't wanna world series because the guys around him are too good all right but like you need to see producing the postseason put the thing is also. I will give chart a little bit of a credit here. They're nine guys batting. You're not even pitching as unless you're otani. Bush has not really pitching over a year. It's not it is not a one man cannot takeover. No it's not because if you want any other sport of basketball just give on the basketball every possession and let him doing. You can't look of the charters four at bats game. Maybe five yeah and the guy can't do anything if if the leftfielder makes an hour <hes> can't do anything if there's a bad throwing indian field i feel like that's kind of what makes below like solich cool and like how we can consider trout one of the probably the greatest of like this probably the.

"Of the time now and do you know mike trout have you ever met my trout i've never met my trout all right so when he comes out of the box is he kind of looks in your general direction but he's just kinda it's sort of like you're just the background around and he's he's not looking to acknowledge you and you're not looking all jim you're focused on you're catcher right i've noticed that from him the first thing that i do feel like you usually looks at me and maybe get a little nod i think he might just do that everyone yeah when he the first the the first batter the game he like he goes i mean what he says heidi umpiring taps the catcher with his with his bat and then he so then he looks at you to like he's gonna introduce himself to the home environment yeah i think so you know he's just like hello i'm the best player that walks you're nice to meet you see i'm gonna go for for today at that point when when he comes in for for end just generally you know he's mike trout is there a psychological element element to it where you're thinking maybe even that you have to get away from you regular game plan just because whatever you've done against him doesn't worker there's some sort of just intimidation component that comes into it yeah definitely you know you you're big league pitcher you feel confident but there's always guys that's a you know i don't wanna intimidates not quite the quite the right word but that you know you just feel at eight disadvantage right off the bat right because of who he is and and what he's done against you in the past paso in in you just automatically feel like you're margin for error so small because i mean he just hammers everything you know so right off the bat you're like man okay of basically throwing the kitchen sink already what can i change this at that maybe at least get off the beryl i mean yeah he only single those first two at bats so technically 'em kept the ball in the yard and he didn't do any damage but at the end the day might trout on first he could still bags and then you know you got pool holes in upton behind on so you don't want a fast sky on base so obviously you wanna keep mosque so yeah there's a lot swimming through remind there at the end the day when he got the best you know best baseball player standing in the box you know with a lot of success in the past against you yeah i'm not sure that there's anything in my job that feels as hard as facing like the like if i had to go up against the very best in the world in like a head to head matchup at my job like that i don't have any equivalent to that and so i i probably would emotionally shut down and in fact a lot of the questions that i'm probably gonna ask about a lot of these plate appearances is how did you not emotionally shutdown it is incredible dummy how when a strike needs to be thrown you're up there on the middle of the on the on the mound in middle of everything and you throw a strike and i don't quite know how you do that 'cause i i couldn't do that but i also don't quite know how you go up against might trout in i mean you know your i imagine that to be a professional athlete takes a great deal of confidence and a great deal of self confidence any ability to convince yourself that you know you're you know you really are one of the best in the world and you can get anybody out at any given time end there is a little bit of of a self reinforcement there and there's a lot of that's true and then there's probably a little bit of self deception when you need it and you just when you're looking at mike trout there's no self deception possible you know that mike trout is you know better than you like i don't know how you feel with that yeah well it's good that will now you got me all nervous man.

"Wow. Plays hard. He plays with passion. He has a vicious smile. You know, he smiles, but he's trying to destroy. Pretty good. Child leaps up. Trout's I bought full seasons. He finished runner up three times and won the American League MVP award in two thousand fourteen and two thousand sixteen. He stays healthy and he continue at this pace. He's going to be the greatest player to play this game. Athletically, push shore about historical comparisons with you guys in your neighborhood or Ted Williams in Babe, Ruth and Lou Gehrig. How do you feel about that? You know, it's, it makes you feel great. People compare. You know, you always going to be the next Babe, Ruth disguising the next time. Great to be in the same conversation. That's remarkable. It's pretty crazy. For all of his success. Every off season trout returns home to spend the winter in millville even after signing a one hundred and forty four point five million dollar contract. He lived in the basement of his parents home. Then in two thousand sixteen he bought his own place across town. It looks fishing, Delaware Bay's. Here he likes hunting everything that he likes to do. Other than baseball is here. He also likes this Mr. Mike trout on the phone with a huge, a huge weather nerd, whether just like I am and the rest of us out there having a winter storm come through. And Mike, you guys got a quiet down by down and you call somebody. I'm like, who is it calling? Tell us the latest. She got their millville. It's been crazy for sure. Obviously up all night. You know, up every hour, you know, checking, we probably. We probably the roads are terrible. No, it's awesome love. When we're home in the off season, my phone is blowing up with weather maps and pictures, and all this is going to be the big one. The baseball season trout keeps the angels in their fans informed. It's warmer in jersey. It's going to smell scorching the chance of rain. These are meteorologist. There's no doubt if we see rain coming into a city Worrell plane. We go check with Mike, hey, how's it? Look? We're gonna be able to take BP tomorrow or what's going on. And he's usually right on the money, no snow after baseball. I think he just knows this and you know, I enjoy weather lot. So it's maybe I'll do. And it was home a New Jersey where undescended ninth, two thousand seventeen Trump married his high school sweetheart. The best day of my life. Yes, walked down the aisle is great. Tell me what you saw when she walked on the. A lot of. Oh, man. Unbelievable. When they wanted to be a swear, they know it's very. It was a magical day in Mexico night. And it's not so icing on the cake. A month after getting married trout's hometown team was in the NFL playoffs. Have you do is watch football on Sunday and you're seeing Mike, do something the eagles game and get a football, and it was like, all right on cool. I mean, I see this guy on during the season need to see him on Sundays. Trout, followed the eagles all the way to the Super Bowl, taking twelve people from millville including his barber Christian thought the NFC championship game was the best game. But saying, obviously the Tom Brady is. The ultimate. That was all. Everywhere. Can't imagine what it felt like as a player, you know you reflect as in like how this would feel as you know, being on baseball win the World Series. The way I fell as fan. I think it'd be pretty special to feel it as a player too. But trout hasn't come close. Now in his seventh season, his only one playoff appearance in two thousand fourteen the angels are swept by the royals. Trout had one hit in twelve advance. He's the best all round player in the game, but he's not as famous as our in judge right now who've played a year and a half. And the only way that that gets corrected is if the angels get to the World Series or deep into the playoffs. And you can't guarantee that in baseball. I think my trout could raise his profile tomorrow if he decided that he wanted to engage a little more fully, give up some more of his free time. And that's his choice. I know there's a lot of people that would like to see the commercialization of Mike on a much grander scale. That's not what he's about.

"Part of the program for this week they'll be back on. Monday as, well with my regular crew. We'll, be let's hear from Mike trout And baseball, is saying we need to hear more from Mike travel remember we talked about it yesterday and the comments by the Commissioner I was surprised by these. Comments rob Manfred he said Mike's. Are great great player a really nice person but, he's made certain decisions about what he wants to do. And what he doesn't want to do and how he, wants to. Spend his free time and now he doesn't want to that's up to him if he wants to engage. It'd be more active in. That area being marketing himself I think we could help him make his brand really really. Big but, he asked to make a decision that he's prepared to engage in. That area takes time and effort here's travel Iraqi talk guys. I do, as much as I can Baseball season so You and Erin. Hitting home, runs I mean you think this is, nice Promotes You, know I think Like I said before we, can express herself know obviously not just playing baseball. During the, game dugout This anywhere I was thinking about this whole thing about that might trout needs to. Market himself more Manfred. Said player marketing requires one thing for sure the player you cannot market a. Player passively you need people doing gauge with those to whom you are trying to market in order to have. Effective marketing we are very interested in having our players more engaged and having higher profile players in helping our players develop their, individual brand but that involves the player being. Actively engaged what exactly does rob Manfred want Mike trout to? Do that he's. Not doing I. Don't know I would be interested to ask rob Manfred like this whole idea, marketing yourself What what does that mean commercials I mean I've seen Mike trout. In some commercials I as he turned down commercials possibly would that make that much of a difference interviews I think he does, interviews that he taught people cover the angels. I've never heard him say that Mike trout doesn't talk to? Them he was. Willing to do. An endgame interview while he was walking around centerfield the other night on FOX I don't know that it's. My Mike trout's fault that was? A story that his what they?.

"One of the nicest guys you'll ever and most talented guys you've ever seen but don't you see that with mike trout that i don't think trout wants to be i think he just he's trying to keep his the best he wants to be himself but we want him to be bigger than the sport right yeah and i don't think he embraces that now i you know for what he does in the way he carries himself i think it's phenomenal for what how he does it because he could if he wanted to but somehow the upbringing the parents whatever the is environment was always so special to him than he respected that you know it in nineteen sixty six i was in carolina league and they asked me about what i wanted to do and i said well i talked about the fear of failure in nineteen sixty six but it wasn't failing myself it was failing all of those people back home all those people that believe meal those people have picked up a newspaper you know i couldn't imagine something happening i did something in my parents had to face you know and and i talked about that and i just think that mike trout is to me the pitta me of what baseball players are i mean it's just so humble and so great and so tell it he hits the ball ducks his head he runs and he doesn't try to show anybody up and and we're blessed with a lot of great talent i mean we we're seeing that fun stuff last night at the at the at the home run derby and people said did you ever have a homerun derby i said yeah every game everybody practiced everybody bracket and so here here we are cubs right nineteen sixty five was my high school i last year the number of the scout for the chicago cubs name was billy caps and he loved me he loved me he wanted me so badly and he brought a is supervisor down i went one for four and he's say overstay over we'd just got back from senior trip stay over he said i can't so the next time went four four with two doubles two home runs and the cubs sighted they dried draft me in the third round ivan but i'm going to jump out the when window i them but think about it i mean not to be hundley because they moved me up quickly i could have been you know i could have been twenty two or twenty three by the time i got in the major league we would have been patient mr bench we we needed us randy hundley was underrated though he was voting in grody did he teach you to put your hand behind your back now i just i broke my thumb twice with a foul outs yeah and i'm thinking you know this is stupid i got round globe and it's hard to miss that thumb i don't know if there's some writer it's hard to miss that and i broke it twice and i said this is stupid and i saw randy had caught like one hundred sixty games and he was using it so when i got there i just took my hand down and stuck it out of the way and i never had another broken bone on my right hand it was but it was just something i had to do and i have a book called catch every ball how to handle life's pitches and i kid people come up and say my kid wants to be a catcher what i tell them catch every bolt if you learned to catch every ball the same thing in life but catching every ball all of a sudden man this guy can really catch him or this lady can really catch did you have knuckles that i'm trying to think who you got caught we had a guy named l a brigade pruitt gatewood and aaa in nineteen sixty seven and he was a journeyman and he was on the way out so he said he'd throw the knuckleball.

"Listen farright last segment the day today here in for those of you who are wondering why i'm like pointing out the title of this show today and saying it doesn't say l west up there because it used to say that they're about a segment ago and then between these i renamed the episode so it says it doesn't say it says mike trout just mike trout because i was my trout rant right there so yeah mike trout poor guy he i hope he has a i know he has a pretty girlfriend that's fine i know i don't really care anyways but nice house that actually do care about hopefully has some comfortable living arrangements because you're forty one and forty one year ten and a half games back of the of the astros who tanked for two and a half years while you were good like playing the top baseball of your life when you first this i mean so you are still now because you're obviously mike i'm talking straight to mike shot right by the white guys this is just for me and mike mike sorry you're just the policy is for you to you from the from the angels for disappointing you so much and allowing team and your own division to win the world series before you guys and to and for them not not spending money wisely and giving j wilson a crazy steal and for giving pools too much money because he's getting old and knowing that has a of fasciitis problem and yes i chris young and signing we'll just enough to actually just ups and he's gotten better but yet and thinking that gave richards could be your your ace yeah he looks grays look and pitcher looking big big guy got a great slider but this nope nope and then you didn't you who don't have any buddy they don't have anybody they have their guys the giants they went out and got cueto they went out and got some marga hasn't really worked out yet just give me an example from what does you can do but the astros made it work for lander the astros wouldn't found charlie morton turned him into a gray starter make move make a move make a move do something that's op season signed somebody pitching pitching pitching pitching pitching pitching even though i know tom lost last time for two three four two to win that game yeah they probably should because then whether they're hitters on strike or they a team they're baseball is a grind people as abba salute grind it's just the season is so long number one you're always together you're on a airplane back and forth throughout the so you think that the pitchers when hitters finally hit and they lose seven to five or or lose ninety eight or something like that the hitters don't get upset or they don't feel it at all then it goes back and forth the pitcher anybody a pitches nice five and a third innings of the two one run ball whatever it was to run doll in the hitters can't bounce back that's it's inspiring baseball i mean i know i know what giants fan not trying to be giants fan no i'm telling you disclaimer but missing sample is happening to giants yesterday they even lost i only talk giants losses that much but they lost yesterday however they were down in that game twice before they took the lead twice and then obviously blew it couldn't come back in the bottom of the ninth inning but we only have one inning it's tough i understand but the fact that they had fight a team has shown fight team had injury issue teams had all this stuff that happen to them with their ace of their staff going down and and multiple injuries shoes happening a guy at an appendix tear guy got slid into and and busted busted his finger on josh l please leg because he has slid into wrong had a weird concussion because he slid into slu into a side wall on the side of the field flu crazy fluky weird injuries and they're still there two games over five hundred they're four and a half back in the west yeah they wouldn't be back in the american league was meant that because it's a little different comparison but they shone fight they have fight they are could mesh together as a team they have fight they come back and games the.

"To tell my children about him is that he likes the weather i've been around trout i've spoken with trout found him actually really engaging when he was talking about shohei otani but i've kind of seen up close how tough it is to bring out more from trout until i'm interested in he can tell us about your efforts behind the scene to kind of make trout into the superstar that he should be i mean i i love my drought drought is awesome he's amazing everything that those of us who love the game know that he is and what sparks my little mini thread last week wasn't really in hope it didn't come across his picking on mike trout in it was really pointing out the kind of systemic issues the get in the way of marketing him or or anybody else in and it was really responding to this notion that you see just as narrative that his form that this this quote unquote mlb needs the markets players better which for people like me who are on the inside is like nails on a chalkboard it's along the lines of saying baseball's dying or or people who say the mlb it just you know we we we reacted visceral way because again we were on the inside and we were doing it and we know all the things that that then in the way so i i would say you know a couple of things one and you know lindsey alluded to this you know the player has to have nachos the great personality but also a willingness to discipline a lot of these things and again this is not to pick on my trial will experience this with countless star players but you know you can have all sorts of opportunities to to do either you know national advertisers sponsors to do media interviews to do extensive profiles to do magazine things shoots and these opportunities do come along and people inside him will be headquarters make those opportunities happen and very often in sometimes the player just doesn't want to do them sometimes the the schedule and reality of baseball simply doesn't allow you know a mocking to sit here and say that football and basketball players have an easy but they do have many more office in between their games than than baseball players do of baseball really is a grind it's every single day and it's not just the three hours of the game is you know if you know for an average seven pm game players are getting to the ballpark around one or two they have their routine of stretching and working out there they aren't talking to media there's gonna be writers before and after games and you know they'll have an often maybe every two three weeks and on that one day they want arrest you know or they wanna do whatever else interest them and so very often in some like myself would come up with for two days that might qualify under that banner of quote unquote marketing players and for whatever reason in it's very difficult to pull those things offering the season yeah and i've talked to chat to and i was asking him about him as opposed to ask him about someone else and so i had to work pretty hard to find a line that i could quote that was actually worth quoting and not necessarily the most attention seeking type but even if you are in there are players out there who are maybe a little fleshier in some ways or seek that kind of publicity in a way that doesn't and even they at this point in the post cheater post a rudder era there really aren't any baseball players who are national figures in the way that the biggest stars in other sports are and that's not just because of trout's personality or any other one guy's personality it seems like it's because of some larger obstacles that have to do with the sport itself and the way it's fandom is organized so can you talk a little bit about just some.

"Ria mike trout is to for his last nineteen are we worried about mike trout is mike trout gonna need to spend some time at salt lake city to get his bat straight and what would have thoughts a rare slumped from mike trout i i think angels are earned not too early to my child you know things they have spirit about i i don't think this mini slump for my child is particularly disconcerting especially since they're gonna go off the plate safeco field where he is traditionally hit very well so you know it's probably just a timing thing for for trial he has his way of of guiding himself out of these these little downturns in becoming his normal and ep self so i suspect that will happen soon also isn't as you knew you knew his reputation come in your second year on the beat right so you knew his reputation coming into that i'm just curious like washing him night after night like what stands out because he's not a guy who necessarily a given night you would know is the greatest player in the game right it doesn't like he's not like in your face about it like an aaron judge might be you know hitting a monstrous homerun on a given night mike trout is a little more subtle in how he gets to his numbers where it's just that dog consistency night after night after night so i'm just curious from your perspective have covered him for a year plus now what has been like to see him on a daily basis yeah i agree that what he does not necessarily flashy i mean i think one of his biggest drinks is just the fact that he's on base of off in a means you know sometimes you look up and of course he's already on base go to the goal.

"In the history of the game and my troud is right up there with him with them getting his one thousand hit on his twenty six th birthday and it won't be the lead story because it's not three thousand heads it's not five hundred home runs but i think it speaks to a larger point the fact that price are gosh i keep getting their names wrong because they're broke so good the mike trout is so great and he's not going to be the lead story because he plays for the angels in these acquired dude and he just goes about his business news heard for part of the year and he doesn't do anything particularly interesting other than just be great of baseball and is that speak more to my troud urged that speak to the fact that we are of football culture of basketball culture a look at me culture in a guy in my trout is not a look at miyagi whereas price harper is and we talk about price harper more and he's great too but might trout somehow gets swept under the robbery's off the radar and to me that's crazy i feel like in an era not too long ago when i was growing up as a baseball fan i i loved the yankees believe it or not and i'm sure you can believe it i feel like did a we had so send maguire of course and all the home run chases as tainted his those may be in retrospect but i feel like baseball was so much more in the public consciousness when the yankees were winning all those games in like 1998 specifically and in the mariners a few years later we talk about it all the time it looks like the dodgers could win a hundred and seventeen games this year and we kind of just mention in passing and that's where we're at with baseball and i think he's just because we're in a different culture now we care more about instant gratification that we get with.
