Fresh update on "mike trout" discussed on Effectively Wild: A FanGraphs Baseball Podcast

"There are mean ones, there are boring ones. There are kind ones. There are funny for baseball ones, and then there are funny ones, right? I'm sure you've all had these experiences. Yes, important distinction to draw in the humor department. I'm not going to critique any player on this platform with the recording button going for being in any of these, especially funny for baseball, which is a huge insult I'm sure. Maybe after we're done, I'll say a name. But Vinny is in this top group. He is just like the type of like, I don't want to be like, oh, these guys are your Friends, right? Because, you know, I don't actually know him all that well. I was just very struck and smitten by him as a human. And that was really nice because he has developed this cult following online. Recently, and he fits the vibe. Like he's aware of it. He loves the nickname. He came out and we watched a college World Series game together. The next day, which was very fun. Which he said was the first baseball game he'd been to as a fan in a very long time or baseball game in general as a fan. But I feel pretty comfortable saying this is a guy that I think he's okay to like. Yeah, he's now Italian nightmare is the nickname say he was here's Italian breakfast, which was a play on the Billy butler. Nickname and now he's the nightmare. Well, yeah. You know, it's much scarier. No one's intimidated by breakfast. That he was raking at triple-A two in addition to being funny. He had slept a dingers. He was like so overqualified at the level and I think that part of it is that the royals maybe wanted to maintain expectations because vid is a very good player. I don't think he's a franchise savior. Yeah, he's 24, almost 25, right? Yeah, I mean, it's like Reese Haskins or Trey Mancini, you know? He's a good first baseman. He's not going to win any MVP awards, probably, but he'll maybe make a couple of all star games. He's pretty good. But I think the royals were wary of him being, you know, the dude on the horse coming into the air to Carlos Santana. Wow, wow. Yeah. Wow. That's not how Italians. Amelia. I'm jelly. I could say it's fine. I'm not. I also wanted to ask you about this because you have played the game capital P capital T capital G, maybe capital T I don't know if you capitalize the T there, but not with AP I had my promise. I won't say where you put the game because that might detract from your authority. Not in my mind, but in other people's but you guys tweeted or quote tweeted the Mike Trout seemingly getting annoyed about Atlas picaro his teammate tipping pitches this week and there's a great clip of trying to explain from center field how he is tipping pitches and he doesn't look too happy about it and I guess people probably extrapolated from this like 8 second clip because the initial tweet says that he looks so fed up and you can probably read that into him and I think probably a lot of people are thinking like, what is trap feeling these days about still being an angel and having scientists at entire career over to the angels and like would he and Shohei Ohtani have made the same decisions that they made about where to play if they had known exactly how this was going to work out. Anyway, the question was more about tipping pitches and just like how prevalent you think that is and how much it matters because everyone's always intrigued by pitch tipping, right? Because there's like this detective element to it. It's like you're out there and you're just like picking up on these little tells and it's really intriguing and sometimes you will hear often after the fact like oh yeah we had his pitches in that game and there's sort of an assumption almost with like ASTRO's style sign stealing. It's like, well, if you know what's coming, you can hit it automatically, which I think is not true necessarily and I think pitch depth is sort of similar in that like you might think you have the pitches, but do you really and is it easy to hit them anyway, just like do we make too big a deal about pitch taping or do you think it really matters? Like if we were able to quantify like this guy is tipping pitches right now like what is his true talent when he's tipping pitches like actually he is a separate replacement level pitcher now because they know what's coming. Or is this pretty rare like at the matrix level? I've got to think like at the college level probably a lot of people are tipping pitches. I don't know whether the players are all able to pick up on it as well as MLP players would be. So there's your prompt pitch tipping. What do you think? Okay, so I have a couple of stories and I have some thoughts, but I'll do my thoughts first. It doesn't happen at the big league level as much as at the college level because there are cameras everywhere and teams are, there's probably like someone's job on every team is to make sure that no one's tipping pitches. And it's probably someone's job to make sure that they're finding when other teams are tipping pitches. And that I know is a lot. That's what a lot of it advanced scouting is these days. Because so much of it is online. Yeah. Or even video work and motion tracking and you could probably quantify these things potentially. I'm sure teams are doing that sort of thing too. Yeah, so I would say, again, I think it does matter. If teams are putting so much time and effort and thought into it, it has to at least matter in theory to the players in their minds. And I think it probably matters less than a hundred points of OPS, but it matters. Especially it matters in certain counts, it matters in fastball counts when you can be a 100% sure that you're sitting on something. It does make a difference. In college, we did a lot of this. We did a lot of sign stealing even because in college you relay from the catcher gets the signs from the dugout, right? And you could just watch, we would have one nerd on the end of the bench. Which was me at times, you know, writing down every single sign sequence from an opposing coach and then like just trying to figure out what pitch is what and then by the third inning you break the code and then you're doing like verbal calls to your hitters. A fun one would be like, if it's a fastball, you'd be like, bash that ball. And then if it's a curve, you'd be like, crush that.

"He stranger things have happened. I'll give you the bursary for staff. Nineteen percent walkway second at four point. Three percent so peak your interest. Yeah he's making strides should peak interest. Like what and what. I wonder i haven't done a year over year analysis of this but a pitcher who show was uncharacteristically improved in crawl control to this level. Is it sustainable. He's got keep it below seven and a half for next year. All right last one here comes from. Ross he wants to know if eric can call for a bellinger combo meal this week. Maybe two multi homer game. Something along those lines bellenger back on track and we have this. Help me out. man. I need this. I think my prognosticating days should end. There's ridiculous argument. I got it right but yeah no no one bellinger. I can't get a genuine from the heart. he stinks. You gotta cut now watch. He's gonna hit thirteen more homers this year. But you're asking for a lot. That's a lot in five weeks come on. I'm trying to be fair. It's not like i need those homers or anything. oh i. I'm trying to think here of like a struggling guy who i can start to get going again and you know catching hera alagbon. How does this happen. Though where we light the fire under the struggling player and then he picks it up we had not just. I'm no of course right absolutely nothing to do christian ya'll having a great game on saturday. I hope we has more. I am league. i have an assembly numbers I just it was one game taught. Not maybe it's the saturday thing. So we'll circle back to this thursday. Ask care aircrews hitting two homers. Coming saturday mike l. Franko galvez put on the lighter. I will be the starting third baseman in a week. You watch the won't be surprised. Genius all right back the trivia. We've got five pitchers this year with at least ten quality starts without giving up ten homers. The three easy ones corbin stick up to grab shohei otani. I want you to give me the other to go first. Pick wow really oh jeeze. I have again for that miami kid rookie. Rogers rogers has nine quality. Start you would have otherwise made it okay. Because i know he's not giving up home runs. That was good. Guess thank you. I need the list of pitcher name. That's what i'm trying to figure looking at this giants kid right here. Logan web isn't correct. Ya'll man time quality starts eight homers. So now you've got one more. This guy ranks would've thought higher of him than mobile web coming into the year would have thought higher of him come to speak for you but a higher and moving web not giving up home runs. That's hard right. I mean like who is not like love adam wainwright but he's given up penalty right. That's the next though is thanking but wheelers just barely giving up ten home runs three and one gained. Screw it all out. Bassett was doing well. Gaza mall you're naming guys have more quality starts at home runs. Which in itself is difficult to do. Well i know. Who's suppressing home runs. It's not you know fair. I guess. I mean quantrill. I noticed last night. He didn't allow any home. Runs this season but he doesn't have ten quality starts. He think he's up to that yet. You ought to players age or the handedness. I don't think the handedness with men handed. This would probably help me more than age. One clue you. Tell me what you want just already said it so go candidness even he must be lefthanded is the left ear. You could've figured that out from the way that was presented. But yes max. Free expert is not there. i don't think he has the quality start either. Paul starts at eleven home runs allowed at that level. Not that That houston walker. So here's the other is that i looked at wade miley. But not that ballpark ramblers. A lefty hammer. Valdez is the correct answer. Does allow me has ten. Quality starts thing where seven homers allowed. He's not allowing any home run. Because it's all strikes in walks. I would never have guessed. He got the ten quality starts on a team. And i know he's not allowing home runs but man i didn't think he had. The quality starts either. 'cause rambo this by the way is the shame of it is nobody has reaped the benefits because he was written off after the injury by. Yes everybody like. I have like four houston pitchers on my new team and they're all doing well except cranky so new rambo was was doing something. I've garcia to all right. That's good good trivia question there We're running out of time on today's show. Thank you so much for listening. To our little fantasy focus baseball we should note the fans. "He's running completely wild for oakland completely wild but people leagues underscore that. What you just said. Oakland there was a book or something like that about stealing bases and taking chances right so all of all places oakland. It's hard to believe. He has played in twenty. Two games for oakland is seventeen for seventeen in steals three fifty eight three ninety. Two five zero five two home runs not a big homer guy like his hitting twenty home runs might be gone. Maybe not who knows at nine. And he had playing miami and oakland but in pittsburgh what do you think of them dumping Who's that outfit polanco. He's not on the list here. But like gregory plonker like didn't you think three or four years ago. This is a superstar. Like twenty twenty guy. Yeah with have fast things. Change talked about them quite a bit on the shell. In fact in the injuries just really became an obstacle for him. And look. it's not a great place for him to play so if he latches on somewhere. That's gotta hitting friendly scenario. They can mix and match build up some sort of hot streak okay. Maybe he'll be relevant and ale or nfl only league but fourteen out of fifteen in stolen bases. He has eleven home runs now. One nine nine is a bummer. But like you could you could see. He's not that old any thoughts on. Miguel cabrera obviously people probably want to. Hey congratulations five. Hundred home runs is unbelievable accomplishment but from a fantasy aspect he's rostered and seven point four percent of leagues for a reason. There's really nothing there Same as we pull hose it. It is a little bit sad to me is a baseball fan. Seeing these great players these hall of fame players just not producing the end of the careers but a three hundred batting average with five hundred home runs. That's that's quite an accomplishment and he can still get the three thousand hits because he got to play next year this year but good for him. And i would say it was. Let's see twelve years where we were talking elite first round capable production from i mean consistently so until the injuries cropped. I mean look at the games played from two thousand four up until twenty fourteen. Vlad's doing right now. That cabrera did effort at pull. Let's vlad might well be that next version of this but it speaks to. How extraordinary this is that looking flat. Do for twelve years to get there. Isn't that amazing. Kebir is played another seven years since them. Yeah no i mean. Obviously i think the each would have retired already if they didn't have these contracts and we're not seeing these contracts anymore although you know like in five years what are we talking about with mike trout. You know i mean. Hopefully you know we're not talking about this but you know i'm not sure man you're gonna attack another stupid argument. Coming here is might try to first round pick. It's not just the basis. He's not durable durable or first round. I don't think that's not a stupid argument. I don't. I don't know how we how stupid. That's that's a fair question. I mean isn't he now. Who's the pitcher equivalent like kershaw. Isn't trout kershaw when he plays. It's a monster monster numbers. But he ain't plan enough. What a difference. What i worry in the comp there is that we're taking to career curves and overlaying across each other where trout i think has shifted by a year and a half two years. I think he's a little bit further back on the kershaw. I agree with you in theory. I just want to say he's gonna end up playing like fewer than fifty game season and kershaw. I don't know if he's coming back. And these are hall of famers. Give them all the credit in the world but at some point bodies breakdown you know when i hit mine will and it's just amazing to me like i don't know trout's trout or freddy freeman. I'm taking freddy freeman next season i am. I don't mean you for that. I don't think that's crazy at all. It's not like he's stealing. Basis a monster i wrote about the atlanta infield today. Unbelievable what they're doing. We talked about that. This is what. I fear what the trout conversation is that there probably are at least another two years of one hundred fifty game. Mvp capable production. And what i worry is we're not going to be able to tell what year that is until it's happening until the what shohei ohtani stewart right. Now we're in it's happening. We would never have been able to predict. That's the year would but in fairness when we rank other players with brittle dispositions here missing kirwan's like we don't rank them well mike. Trout has last played more than one hundred and forty games in a season in twenty sixteen. We over rank him every year and right now. He's sitting on thirty six five months so anyway we'll get to our rankings on september shows when we lack anything else to talk about. Let's do a brief closer carousel now. If you would please do due to dilute do. It's the closer carousel. It's been around if it weren't for the yeah losing one today. You're not like pointing at me and dancing around like a jig but you're actually like spinning in your chair. That's new. i get all twisted cord. Say trista can adapt times is what is that you talking. What are the kids. Say we shouldn't do a talk of you singing the closer carousel there. We go out and do a daca pal. Some talk on screen here. Are we talking for tic tac. I'm too old for tic tac. We're all pretty much the same age. So i guess really wednesday night you could win you turn thirty year. A physical Physical limitations are gonna kick in. I'm already over thirty. So i over the weekend. Somebody said to me. You look like you're in your thirties. And i was like hi i am of course i am. Yeah me and will smith. The fresh prince will smith man. It's not always pretty. I i still think will. Smith's atlanta's closer though. So i but you would add chris martin where you have tyler matt. Sek richard rodriguez sure which will smith. You're talking about among the three there. It's not the calcareous. That's a different one or the rapper carousel. Or would you call it a rapper. Nowadays the braves closer look they keep rolling them out there and i mean he's he's doing enough to get the job done. I agree with you that that wouldn't it make sense to dabble with somebody else or even go with some sort of combination two or three coloured. Took try closers. But.

"I'm eric fantasy focus baseball presented by linked jobs. That intro trista. I do like that intro. But you got one thing wrong. You are no strut derek. No don't go. we're going to go in right away right away people. We're just going to let people wonder why that's your nickname. So you know it's all good. We are presented by lengthened jobs All right let's get into it man. Let's bring kyle back and you guys get into it. So kyle tell. The story tells the story the tweet what happened on thursday show because we know that everybody listen. Monday must have listened to thursday's but you tell the story i'm gonna. He's gonna play the clip. Just what did some neat only the club on the bus. He's he's somebody ticket along numbers on thursday. We had a conversation of our christian. Geologists struggles eric. Pretty much took the stance that he hasn't done anything this year. How can you convince me. He's gonna do anything the rest of the way for some reason throughout the idea that because he was jinxing him saying all this negative stuff the christian yelich was gonna homered twice picked today. I don't know why he picked saturday. He did cristianos homers twice including go ahead grand slam combo meal the whole deal. So do we give him credit. Forgetting to call on saturday right. Do we kill him. For the christian yelich fad. Take because one of the best days of the season is it somewhere in the middle of. What do we do with this information. Somewhere in the middle man died gap. Isn't it no. It is two of his. Three homers since june twenty-seventh right to be able to predict this is the thing like the hits one home run. And you say he's gonna know homer over the weekend that's one thing but to say he's gonna hit two home runs on saturday and then hits two runs on saturday in the course of providing an entirely legitimate takedown of christian yelich. I don't know i. I can't describe what this what this happens. This happens for the same reason that people bring up the homerun derby. Is that when a player stinks. This longer over performs regression to the mean is inevitable. And that's what that was so. I don't think anything's changed..

"He wants. You didn't write this story. sorry. I'm glad getting this out. Somehow we are always happy to send soft pretzels and other goodies to make his family and his teammates. And i wanna know. O are his teammates taking him up on this leg. Does he have a a room in his house. That is where he stores super pretzels. Does he just have like a month. Delivery is there a specific person. He calls and super friends tom line. Let's be really on one hand giving a guy a lifetime. Supply of pretzels is. What are you going to say no channels. I have a pretzel. This just happened when when janas won the championship wins chick-fil-a and was like. Can i get lifetimes why taylor. Sr we can't do that at least leave. It live in the moment. Go with the flow even at least cesare thing but no superpowers. There's no back on the truck and the truck of super pretzels. The last thing i asked was like has it worked. Like has trout enhance super pretzel sales and they said we see a direct spike in social media interactions and advertising recall ed awareness when using mike's image and likeness. This is a true partnership. Mike has become a member of our team at r. j. j. snack foods family. We look forward to many more years to come and like do i like he's benefiting platform getting super pretzels as he was lebron. Nike man wasn't pursued friends about mike out yet the q. Rating is skyrocketing because of the super pretzels sponsorship. That that's the thing it's like. It's not what you would think of as like an athlete. Endorsement like it's not gatorade or body armor or whatever or even like subway which like once you think it's like healthy food at least like super pretzel is it's a pretzel. It's not like performance. Enhancing substance pressure. It is a super pencil frozen gallison. I had the box in my freezer for years. I have definitely experienced a spike in super pretzel. Mike trout. And honestly i'm not. I just searched you know mike. Trout suits on twitter. And i have a tweet from from us. September twenty thirteen. I had bought mike trout super pretzel box. Because i said just when i thought i couldn't love my trout anymore. He shows up on the super slovaks. Most valuable pretzel. Yes there you go. The sponsorship is paying off right now on this cantata super pretzels for twenty minutes. I mean you're listening to this and you aren't about to go at least look for a transplant. You are lying you are. I would make someone who listens to this pod. Just tally the total amount of times. The word super on this pod over under all set it seventy five uses of the word super prep. Do you think he brings super until all of the angels gatherings like if they have like a yeah the has hotline is are they like mike enough of the super pretzels already. So tiny hooked on super pets. Yeah linking anyway. After we published this podcast is definitely going to be a direct spike in social media. Interactions there better-tasting recalls and awareness. We need to look trout. Spin out for whatever to three months. Now like they don't have like highlights to quote tweet so we gotta give a little boost before he comes back. Yup i think. I'll tell my super pretzel material. I can't what else no we're not topping. That job in the first over really notice was better. This was better this way. If you stuck around for the good stuff now. God bless our twelve. I will just thank mike trout for the memories. We hope there will be many more you know. He's he's all famer if he were to retire today. If this were somehow a career ending calf strain he would be a first ballot hall of famer he already has the war of a hall of famer and hopefully he's only like halfway ish through his square and who knows how the second half will be. I would not be at all surprised if he ages gracefully and we'll just hope for the best but he's already given us so much both as baseball watchers in as podcasters because like the mike trout. Hypotheticals are sort of the signature of effectively wild. There've been dozens of them. They're all collected on the effect of wild wicky which i will linked to. Thanks to that page. I know that we have actually talked. About what if my dad had to switch hit on episode three sixty four and then what if he had to left on episode nine ninety nine and boron switch hitting on episode. One thousand two. And what if my child had gone to college in episode four thirty four. We've done it all. And i never tire of considering new ones. And we'll probably get some super pretzel. Related trout hypotheticals. After this boy. I cannot wait all right jake jordan thank you for joining us from the holiday inn express and we will reconvene here. I i hope in ten years. We'll all be here in healthy and happy and so we'll make trout and we will celebrate his fortieth at that time. And until then you can find chicken jordan on twitter at cessnas barbecue or bbq. You can find them also on the ring. Mlb pod every week where. I also appear on separate podcasts. But the real highlight is jake and jordan every week and of course you can read them in. "Check i do check periodically to make sure that he is still the sponsor of of super pretzels. The spokesman for super pretzel. And he still is and like you go and it says mike trout. The supernatural love super pretzel. And we love him. The major league center fielder group snacking on super pretzel soft pretzels. And he's not afraid to let the world know it's not he is not at all or something going going and so much more like the kind of like low budget like local ad quality of it where it's like the the generic jersey that just says make trout baseball superstar and then his hat says super pets. And it's just the best that i wanted to write about this once a couple of years ago and actually corresponded with a pr person from super pretzel. And there just like wasn't really enough. There do a piece about it. But i was just looking at the email exchange because i wanted to know like the origin story of how might trout became the face of super pretzel and the pr person told me that. Like the the ceo and president of super pretzels. Like a big sports fan and they've had some other sports spokespeople before and so they kinda like mike. Trout was on their radar and so they reached out to trout and all parties felt like they had known each other for years. I'm quoting now okay. Natural effortless fit. Mike was aware of super pretzel previously. Okay yeah and he was also aware of icy the best. Yes that's also like a j. and j. snack food it's like they have multiple Brands and super peta's one in icy is another but unfortunately he could not become the face of icy because there was another conflict with another contract he had so he couldn't represent icy so there is another alternate time line where mike trout is not only the face of super pretzel but also the face of icy. What would that have changed in his career. I don't know but i asked like. Can you give me a details about this arrangement. And they told me while. Trout has always been a phenomenal partner tortoise. each year of his involvement seems to be better than the last. He is always more than willing to partake in photo shoots. See that take that rapid like doing his job. He is definitely the face of super pretzel. He will attend to q. Innate cocktail events his likeness on our packaging and so much more. What what else. I want to know what makes this partnership truly noteworthy is the authenticity behind it. Trout has been a longstanding super pretzel. Fan since he was a little boy the partnership never feels forced or involuntary at you know okay. That is true i you. He loves super pretzels. Because else would he still be the absolute shows that like like. If you're friends with mike trout and he tells you. I'm going to help you move next weekend. I think he helps you move like either. The angels. the eagles super pretzel like this can tory. Yeah loyal i bet. The body armor super drink a sports drink that he is endorsed since two thousand twelve was the conflict with icy them. The body cheaper drink. I think that the right like body. I was gonna bring a body because body armor is definitely just given him the bag. Like which good. Good for mike trout. Get it but this isn't my takeaway. Here is that he absolutely loves super pretzel and adeyemi has since he was three years older. Whenever because that is the only explanation doing a little research here looking at words. We're going deep right now. I'm glad you have vamping. Because we're going. We're going to pretzel archives here so bob woodward so so so. The twitter account is only at least follow or fall by trout. And the new york. Mets gonna hit. That was false. We're going to give a policy professional. But i think it would seem that sorrento's owned by a company that is in basically based in south jersey. So there's probably so he has some definitely some regional world logo and the less i mean again. We talk about suppress all night. And i can't. I can't go go this it's fun. We are not sponsored by so now. It's just. I think the funniest thing that i just found when i googled. Mike trout pretzel his box on ebay of mike chant. Angels super pretzel box for three dollars. Why don't you just go to the store and actually buy signed or anything like i can. Just go to the grocery store tomorrow and probably find rental boxes base on i just affects. But their hair custom osu observes incredible dunks. Goodness espy dunks costume. Super pet pretzel. Qalaway that they made for my. I am just going to go out here. right now in this podcast that if we ever get the chance this is not a bet. I'm sorry i will lock titian. But if we ever get a chance to talk to mike trout. This is number one. We will add him about super pretzel before anything else. This acas like again Much he and we know he's going to be excited to talk about both because they're paying him whatever paying and because he free lawsuit away. There's no he doesn't so. I think it'll be an instant connection. I can't wait to talk to him about super. I have long had the theory and this could go this. Go fast in a good or terrible direction but i have. I have long been of the of the mind that your best chance for. Good trout interview is adn eagles game. Y'all go go to an eagles game with him and just see yeah. Just see where it goes now. He's very serious about the eagles. So you three. Who are not big. Football fans would need to do some prep because he would want to talk about the game and be taxing for you. But but you have super pretzel as a backup. So i think it'd be fine. Actually yeah found the press release. They signed him in october. Twenty twelve so early adopters no the best season ever. I mean right but yeah no i mean at the it would be more preseason and it's like everyone else was like matt. Moore's best prospect in baseball and super pretzel was like now. We're pretzel was choosing between matt. Boren pretzel watch on oetzi for twenty dollars. It says it was a multi. Year agreement. doesn't say how many years but it says we believe. The combination of mike representing are super pretzels. Soft pretzels rose and other related. Products is a rare combination of the best of the best similar notice but rolled gold had Had bat moral locked up. He snyder's might have had a harper. That's in the pretzel race. An anti anti rambo greater all right. I'm sorry the other thing. I asked the super pretzel. Pr person is like. Does mike trout get unlimited super pretzels. Like is that the perk is that why he is so loyal to the brand and they said there's no set quantity of super pretzels. That he gets. But and i'm quoting. He knows he is welcome to all the super pretzels that.

"Polish that we talked about on many honestly favorite in fact he was committed to east carolina. I think is hilarious. Go okay i forgot. Bring this up. The jersey number. One jersey thing is from east carolina. Carolina apparently used to do that with the number fifteen jersey. so he's a pirate acre horri- fraut about it and then he then started at millville so with allied as guideline turned on the angels and go down to greenville. The answer talk about alternate timeline. So my good shouting dominates. The american combine check because remember we were just talking about being the best player in baseball when he was twenty. That would have been. It was sophomore year. I guess or junior year just taking it to like. Unc greensboro. Yes so that's a good one. And then i was just gonna take the. Jj hardy catch that. That is one of the best defensive plays of the last ten years easily and it will hear crap and to do that too right you know has he does have that that moment. That defense emmett. So i've adding to that. He jumped in front of the plane. Add on the fence keeps jewish in front of the southwest fluish. By the way that reminds me the whole. He's subway guy in front jersey. Mike adds such opportunity. And they have god's angel after you know there's that's a bad thing. Yeah that's that's tough but those those are the the only other ones besides million other war related wants to. I guess i'm glad we took it an individual play because like none of us really had done that. And that's not the way we consume might trout's career mostly just like it's the steady accumulation of value. Maybe more so than just like the single play and partly that's just because he hasn't been in the playoffs and so a lot of the place plan together but that's the one that's the signature one like there. Obviously like you know. He'll hit a ball that's like at his ankles. Four hundred thirty feet or something and that's really impressive. Or he'll beat out a ball that he seemingly has no business beating out and like he's made a lot of homerun robberies in there a lot of cool ones but that one because that was like the the young trout who could do everything better than everyone. That was because that was right. Yeah that was twelve. And that's when he right has again. He could have just spinneys carolina so another one i wanted to take and this is a little too personal. Maybe but like jordan. I know someone who got mike trout in high school. We actually know somewhat like that's now like a joke and we've talked to them about it and they're like line out like a thousand months our you know like we that's real like we know someone who got mike trout and i that's the thing. I wonder what he would have hit in college because his dad was a great college hitter. I wrote about that one spot. Like i wonder like what he have been as good but just in college or or what have you been directly exceeded the optimistic version of the wood. The mariners have been able to screw up my. Yeah just to put this in talking with this all the time. 'cause like we love small school division three baseball and new jersey. Small school college. Baseball is like as good as it gets in the kid who we were talking about earlier. Who wore number one at melville was like one of probably like a one of the best hitters in the country. This kid ryan mcisaac at four zero five this year in three d three and we always talk about like what if mike trout just like stayed nearby and like played division three baseball at bro in college like having that of the number of started with six seven seven i do. I do believe it. Maybe he would have started hitting left handed. But just give shine pitch hundred. That's the other thing. Yeah absolutely would have been pitching. Probably true needs to you also. Lot alternate timelines on his podcast. My goodness we've really on different directions. How much better could the other timelines be than. Actually this one's pretty darn good. Yeah so i got just a couple more here. i'll say. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but i think he kinda spoiled us when it comes to prospect promotions and i know that he. He did struggle briefly in twenty eleven. He got a little unlucky. And i wrote about that once. He had like a low bap pin everything but like because he just took the whole baseball world by storm immediately in two thousand twelve when he was still so young like. It wasn't just him. It was also harper and strasbourg and later one soto and like you know a bunch of other guys who came up and were good right away. Jason heyward but like i like now. We're just so spoiled. That when jared celtic comes up in struggles in his first taste of the majors or wander franco is like good but not incredible right away. It's like what are they waiting for. What's taking so long. And so it's like we need to recalibrate to like our pre trout. Understanding of like what the eighteen curve is like an agent curve has kind of changed but like he just. He blew our minds so much early in his career that i think it gave me unrealistic expectations for like every subsequent prospects so that might be a bad thing but it is part of his leg at least in my mind and i also want to take the fact that he has been and still is the face of super pretzels. Oh why didn't i have this on my voice oversight. It's the best like i know. He has bigger endorsement deals too. But this is one the fact that he still reps super pretzels after all this and like maybe he signed like a fourteen year deal with super pretzels to know spotless extension. I think they actually. He stayed with them. He could wind and rain with a bigger company but he has to stay with super has been with super pretzels for like maybe his whole career and you would think that he would priced himself out of super pretzels by this point till like he must have given them a sweetheart deal like he he must have had a chance to opt out or whatever like he can't have signed like career contract like a lifetime deal with super pretzel. Is that what happened. I don't know. But like i just went to super pretzel dot com in. Like every time i check i do check periodically to make sure that he is still the sponsor.

"Baseball mike trout. Since the wildcard era is one of only three players to lead the league in strikeouts and win the mvp award. As far as i can tell by looking through this on my phone at the buffalo wild will be about an hour and a half ago. The other two. I believe our bovin in sex in sammy sosa in nineteen ninety eight but i just love the mike. Trout lead the lead league in strikeouts. And i know that we live in the era strikeouts. Were everyone swings missing. It's okay it's fine. You can still be good ledley strikeouts. It was like not a problem but not not a problem in for me it made me think about like you never really get your strikeouts completely unchecked and it reminded me of like when i had acne in high school. I can manage this. It's gonna fully go away. But i do my best to keep it under control. And that's what mike trout. Eventually did strikeouts. His totals than plummeted from one eighty four in two thousand fourteen and got significantly lower over the next two seasons both info seasons and so i just love it like us up more than anybody still won the vp. Then it was like. I can't do that anymore. I'm gonna guess is still not good enough. Yeah that's something. I was considering drafting. But we've already alluded to it. Make you mentioned like just the fact that seemingly every season he targets some quote unquote which would already be a strength for just about anyone else. He says this is what. I'm going to be better at this year. And then he is so he wins an mvp awards and he says well was nice. But i struck out too much. So then he's gonna strike out a little less and he's done this with so many things whether it's like when he couldn't hit high pitches for a while right because he's a low ball hitter and then he said i wanna be a good hypo hitter to and then he liked turned into the best high ball hitter for a while or elec when his arm was his worst tool. I don't know if anyone's gonna take that so sorry. If i'm stepping on anyone's toes but i love the fact that that was like the one thing he didn't really do that well and he at least got it up to average you know he. He did some shoulder exercises or something and suddenly he was like pretty good at throwing to and he's had that like every year it's like i'm not getting good enough jumps this year so now i'm going to get better jumps. And maybe he can't continue to do that forever but he has continued to do it thus fire and that's been a lot of so i'm always looking forward to like. What will he fix this year because sometimes it seems like he just doesn't really have anything left effects and like his plate discipline which is like sort of an unsung skill. Stale i guess even in this era you don't really see like highlight reels of you. Know mike trapped good takes or something but like he has basically the best or close to the best player as a put in baseball to in. It keeps getting better after year. He gets more and more selective and just doesn't swing at anything he can't drive and that's another thing that it's like i'm just gonna be better at that. And then he is. It's wonderful. yeah i mean. It's it's phenomenal. it's just the best. He's just the best. I keep trying to like dude discipline reels and no one wants them but i keep wanting them give them. Yeah okay so. This one's a little follow me. We're about to go on a journey. So back in twenty fifteen. Michael clare wrote a thing for cut for about scouting reports for harper and trout There had been previously unreleased a scouting reports from scouting bureau. That he got his hands on for these guys. And i'm actually not gonna read from there staring reports because they're glowing as you might expect them to be but there's a tidbit in here that i love. Which is that mike. Trout experimented with switch hitting at one point ben. I think you're familiar with the story. Jake andrew leslie are too right so he never did it in a game. He would do it for scouts if they asked and he would do it during vp sometimes but he was not trying to actually implement this into games although and here. I'm quoting from this piece. Actually beat my high school team in homerun derby left-handed. They made me hit left handed. They told me. I had to hit lefty or couldn't play sadly according to the center fielder it was just something people thought maybe down the road. I want to do it. But i don't think there was any potential there except that he won the summer under we and i one of the things. I really appreciate about my trout because he is so good at so many things. Is that when you watch him. And maybe this is a little too close to what we were just talking about because i'm going to tell the left-handed home restore so here we are. I just feel like there is. There is a version of trout. That might be better than the version. Weeks could question right. He just still feels all these years into his career. Seventy five or seventy seven wins depending on which version of warrior going with. It just feels like there is untapped potential. He might still surprise us with thing. And some of that is going away in the off season and tinkering with the thing and coming back and being good at the thing he was bad. And i'm doing air quotes. No one can see before. But i just think there is something very special about a guy whose talent is so well established and so lauded and we spend so much time talking about it. Who still feels like he has the potential to. Wow you with something. And i think when a guy has that kind of sustained excellence. It's almost easy to lose sight of. Just how good. He is which people listening to this. Podcast will be like well. Why did you talk about him so much. Because that's seems impossible. But i think you get you get comfortable yet settled in with a guy and so it just feels cool that this dude who is so amazing one day turn around and be like what are they gonna lift you though. It's pretty great. Yeah i got my hands on the video of him. Taking batting practice left-handed i forget how aware and i tweeted it. I'm pretty sure. And i think it's our facebook too so you can actually see it happen. I'll find it and linked to it if anyone is curious but it's not just apocryphal. This did actually happen. I don't know about the homerun derby but he definitely took batting practice. Left-handed looks like he could have hit that way. So yep that's pretty cool too. I love this answer. I also when i think about right. It's like okay but all right. Let's say he was a switch hitter. Like what when you look at numbers. It's like well it's not like he was he hasn't been awesome against righties so it's like let's give them let's give them the platoon's like what changes made mullets. Maybe maybe reverse said votes reverse navy like his. He's like a career like three three hitter but like the powers lower and the strikeouts or something like that like maybe that slipped result would be. But i don't know it's again. It's hard to complain with what we got up. Yeah the many models of mike trout is one of my favorite things about him just because he has kind of morphed a bit as he is aged but has remained like roughly as excellent in his various incarnations. So like you sweat. The league in a lot of different stats. That don't often go together in one player although he still hasn't let the week in homers because jorges hey solaire beat him out a couple of season to go which i'm still sorta matted about. You had the super young trout who was incredibly fast. I mean he's still very fast. But like i think as sam has noted like for at least a while in that season i think he was leading the majors in based running runs and batting runs and fielding runs and he ended up like coming pretty close to doing pat the full season so he was just like the best at everything and had all the tools and then later on he kind of became like the high strikeout slugger and then he cut back on the strikeouts..

"The guys get hurt and all that but like still there was no prevailing sense that like everything was about to change and that this guy might trout was about to dominate the next decade of baseball. And i think that that's wonderful because it suggests that you never know what's right around the corner may be the next best player in the world is about to debut and we don't even know it yet and i don't know if anyone's get like draft. His two thousand twelve season. So maybe i'll hold off on that. But he was just the best that basically every aspect of baseball that. You're i really would like harper to end up like second in war over the course of their careers just so that we can never abandoned be going into the hall of fame the both be first ballot guys and here we are yet again. It's funny because like it was always harper's trout and who you got like at least for a little while. They're just because harper was so highly touted as a prospect and harper has panned out. He basically has lived up to the hype. I mean maybe not just because he was like the most hyped prospect ever. But you'd be hard pressed to say that he's a disappointment because he's going to be in the hall someday to and he is a superstar and i guess you know you never know like how there's thirties will go and maybe harper will make up some ground on the back end but like that conversation ended very quickly. Yeah there's no real rivalry. Even though harper has turned out to be awesome like trout was just so good that that became not a conversation very quickly. And we could do this own like mike trout war segment. But i mean again. I didn't even bother preparing it. And i fell into noticing that. Bryce harper literally at half of mike trout half. And he's also maybe a. I vowed hall of famer. He's a so like that. That sums up. And i just love like you mentioned right because the two thousand twelve is obviously you know such an iconic season but like it was really sixty five games that through everyone off the scent right the forty yeah bad to average games in the big big leagues and then the folly in into dozen levin when he was just tired and it wasn't good and those are the only time he's ever struggled basically ever in baseball so because of that he fifteen except ragas twenty fifteen when he was merely an average big leaguer. Yes yes well said so for my second pick. I love all those Very good good transition here. This is kind of going more of off of what meg was saying. Because i was also thinking about like trump and bad. And i just got to mention that. But i'm gonna go a little bit different. Which is i'm going to draft. Mike trout being unbelievable in spring training. Mike trout. This is maybe not something that people i was going to take the fact that he's also making all star games because he's got to all star game. Vp's and you know he's always been against but that's a small sample but if you look at mike trout. Spring training numbers going back to this started noticing like fifteen sixteen. But i'm now going back and seeing that when in two thousand ten in seven plate appearances when he was literally straight out millville he had four hits two doubles a triple a. Homer as a child in big league spring training and then if you look at thirteen through sixteen. Ps was over two thousand ten to twelve eighty eight thirteen sixty to twelve seventy six like this dude is presumably just hanging out just showing up and getting swings in. And he can't help it. He's like sorry mike trout. Like i know we're all trying to get loose. But i'm still going to put up like six hundred on base and slugged nine hundred for these three weeks like i just what i do going to do. I'm sorry you know. And i i just love it sure. There are all kinds of great players who absolute suck every spring and it was a slow stories. Slow start mike. Sorry i'm just. I can't help. I can't movie where the superhero uses their powers in like common society. And everyone's like what are you doing. Still turn it off. Hold the door accidentally. That's that's mike trout. You know hitting six home runs in two thousand fourteen spring training for no reason. The best player as the scene at the end of incredible were dashed like tries to finish second in the race. Angels are his parents. Being no govern psychic couldn't like sorry. I'm also the best one. We're not trying so i just love mike trout. He just can't get it off. So what about his his career. Spring training stats can do those. So four hundred ninety three at bats in spring training. He's like douglas season full season. Basically give me the line. What are we got three forty three four thirty five six twenty three. Let's a one thousand fifty eight hundred. Twenty seven homers and twenty six steals and eight times caught stealing. I so it's like it's only a little better than his normal. Say it's a little bit better. I guess because it's like I mean those numbers are eye-popping but so are all of his numbers. So but thousand eight oh. Ps compared to a thousand to a ps career in the regular season. But like you have to figure. He's not trying his hardest so even though he's facing you know minor league competition rape part of the time. It's still pretty impressive. Yeah maybe maybe we should. Maybe i should look into this and just be like how. How good is the average superstars. Line yet again. This doesn't tell me then. We already know bike. Trump's good matter. But i just think it's i just think it's funny because i always noticed that every year. I'm like oh my god he just can't turn it off so that's my second pick had speaking of the fact that he's never had a bad month like he's never had a bad march even i guess he like he missed time in some marches but his worst spring training opie s.'s. Twenty seventeen eight sixty four which is not bad at all or i guess eight twenty four in in two thousand twenty which was like one of his worst seasons you even though it was a really excellent and he was like. I'm disappointed in myself after that one. He is like he came into the spring. He's like fix them things like but her last year where he had a one sixty two. Opiates plus like. Yeah he really needed some work so you got spring. Spring trout is. What do you got jake. I wanna talk about twenty fourteen thousand which is far and away mattress most dreadful omega fifty in which he at an obvious plus one sixty nine and won. Mvp miguel cabrera decided not to around here is low season by war. I believe in a full season. But what i really want to zoom in on our his strikeouts from that year you start at one hundred eighty four times which led baseball mike trout. Since the wildcard era is one of only three players to lead the league in strikeouts and win the mvp award. As far.

"I did go with a stati one. Because it illustrates a thing to me. That i just really love about him so using the fan split stool. I looked at my trout's wrc plus every month since he became a bigly regular. So we're we're saying cited twenty eleven forty odd plate appearances. He got that every month since he has become a regular. He has one month where he is below league average by wrc plus and he had a ninety nine w was in that month in august of twenty five ninety nine w. r. c. Plus that is the only month in since you became a big league regular where he was below league average and to follow it up and this to me is such a mike trout thing his september october. Wrc plus in two thousand fifteen one ninety one because the guy when he's down he comes back and he figures out how to do stuff better the next year. He can't hit the high fastball. He figures out how to hit a fastball. He feels like his defense is lagging. He sorts that out. I just i appreciate that. A person who is who was obviously like pattern gifted at this specific thing that he happens to have the amalgamation of skills native skills to do this weird thing that we have constructed super. Well it's also a guy who like is still in school right. He's still doing school. He's not getting stuff quite the way he wants. And his worst many big leaguers would love it if their worst big-league month less than ninety nine. Wrc plus there's some big leaguers. that'd be a great month for me so as i call. I think he was hurt i. He was playing through an injury like dove to make a catch and he hurt his wrist or something and it was bothering him. It was sore. So there's a reason why the one time he was not great. it's not just a slump. It's he was hurt so yeah basically he ever slumps is just the most consistent when he is healthy and when he's on the field and i don't wanna take anyone else's pick but the thing that occurs to me along these lines is is just that you know. He has been so consistent on a a seasonal level to at least when it comes to the war so that it seems like every year there's a new challenger in if i'm still in someone's pick your just the i will stop but it seems like a number of times you're not yes this would not actually people take but it is something i like about him which is just that like we've had the is. This guy is good as trout. Now is there a new player. Who's the best in baseball and obviously like there's legitimate reason to have that now because he's not playing but when he was playing even this year he was clearly the best player in baseball and so many other contenders to for the crown. Have come and gone. Whether it's bedser yellow or josh donaldson or whoever like there have been so many guys who may be matched trout for a year or two but just haven't been able to stay at that level so it's incredible consistency for someone who has such a high level at all times. I was gonna add like i do hope that we basically ends up being lebron type thing where we're so desperate to give someone else and then he's gonna have like twelve hundred psi in september and we'll be like what are we doing what we're doing people. Let's let's be realistic. So i think i will take something that is sort of similar to jordan sits in the genre of we underestimated make trout. Except it's even closer to his transition into the best player in the world. which is that entering. The two thousand twelve season was rated as the third best aspect in baseball. I love this pick by baseball. Prospectus by baseball america and by mlb dot com. All of them had either matt moore. I and bryce harper second or bryce harper. I and matt moore second and this was after mike. Trout had made the majors. This was after he had been in the minors for a few years. Like everyone had gotten a great look at trout. He who's not an unknown. He was not the kid who is playing high school baseball in new jersey like scouts at seen him and everyone liked him he was super highly rated. The projection systems really liked him. And suggested that you might be the best player right away but no one got anywhere close to how great he was almost immediately and i say almost just because he was sick in the spring rate and he lost some weight and he didn't actually get called up in two thousand twelve until like late april and basically from day one. He was the best player in baseball and has continued to be ever since. And so the fact that smart prospect people kinda missed like that close to his breakout. Like i don't want to denigrate anyone's scouting skills. They're all better than mine. And it's easy to miss but to me the fact that he was drafted twenty fifth overall. Like that's a great one but there have been a lot of draft. Mrs and you know he was in high school and he was far away and he wasn't facing great competition. Everything was called that spring. Yeah right didn't he. Was still a a few years away from from being superman so that to me is like more explicable than the fact that on the eve of his immediately become the best player baseball he was still seen as like a very good prospect but not the best prospect ever basically and that just boggles my mind because We thought he was gonna be good but right up until he was the best. We seriously underestimated him. I think it's still too early. I think it's really important to prospect. There's a chance matt moore has another gear did you. Did you see what he did in japan last don't want i don't wanna lock that in. Yeah okay that's true. Let's let's listen. plays out then. I i mean you're right more could easily accrues seventy five to. Oh that's true. That's a good point. Yeah we've been turned thirty yet so he has a long way ahead of him. But so it's not like bryce harper was a bust or something like it's not like like harper's a hollow favor to so i'm not saying that like him being the number one or two prospect in a typical year like of course he would be more. Okay maybe that's more of a mis- just because pitchers are tough to project..

Slugging percentage which have seen these trends on the rise in the past few seasons. We probably won't see him reach three thousand hits with estimates at around twenty three hundred but it's fair to say that my trout will one day hang up his cleats in the annals of baseball greatness but his route towards being the best is more than plausible. We may not see a player pitch and hit in the same game ever again. After the season. I can understand the argument for both sides while shohei ohtani plays in the american league. "So dan. i want you to help. Explain exactly how wild this year has been for sports cards with an example and that example that sticks out to me and shocks me every time i consider it. Is this record setting. Mike trout card. Can you tell me a little bit about the card itself. So it's a it's a two thousand nine bowman chrome super factor dan. Hey ducky is a writer and researcher for espn and a card collector. Himself it's got autograph on a autograph on grated. Basically there are three companies professionals Authenticator beckett s g c they grade. How perfect on a scale of one to ten a. Carter's so this might trump card is a nine so it's pretty. It's pretty close to perfect but the autograph is greeted at ten. So it's really close to perfect card can awesome. It's a trap route card also on top of that. It's a one of one so there is only one of these in existence yet. It's so interesting because mike trout in public is like a semi anonymous celebrity like a lot of fans casual fans and sports. Even don't really know him. But this card this one of one card with the perfect autograph. What did actually go for went for nine. hundred million. A new record has been set for the most valuable baseball card in history. Somebody paid three point. Nine million dollars for this mike trout rookie card. I know that when joe maddon was confronted with the information that he had a player who's card solta that much giving like. How much does the mona lisa goes for. Wow i'm into art. That puts him right up there with the mona. lisa's self. For what what is anything by a davinci or wow that is. That's that's pretty. That's pretty phenomenal. And it's actually. It's like yeah. I mean that's disappear question. And what was the previous record holder in terms of the most valuable card that had ever been sold at auction. The previous holy grail. Was you know the the honus wagner keys who six said turn of the century the twentieth century like early nineteen hundreds heart on. It's such a lower behind it. That's not happening with mike trump there. There's no incredible backstory to have his card exists. It's it's modern. It's not easy to obtain but it's not it's not like tobacco card that was pulled from from production really what happened to wagner was once thought is that wagner didn't like that he was being used his likeness is being used to sell tobacco the kids so he objected a pulled the card from production and that was that the other less known school of thought is that wagner he wouldn't be compensated for his likeness so he objected because he wouldn't be paid and the facts the truth which is a i like this story better it would be the like the earliest flexing of brand autonomy. It is remarkable what you say though the difference between his honus wagner card which does like looking at it. I'm looking at it right now on my screen. It's like this historical american artifacts that reminds me of like a daguerreotype from like the civil war or something it looks important and ancient and the trout card. The fact that this object can be worth more than any other thing that came before in modern times and the guy who sold this. Mike trout card dan for this terrifyingly large amount is a man named ken golden. So tell me a little bit more about him. What's the business that guy runs. Golden is ken. Golden golden auctions diammonium. Sins loan out nike sneaker. How much does that they work can in your eyes to me. Mookie Betts makes history with another 3-home run game

"So mookie betts last. Night Raby. Three homers Ford does in a game for the sixth time in his career Johnny. Sammy Sosa the only other players do that and movie didn't in a thousand fewer games basically in Mayes and fifteen hundred fewer than So when you look our call you red sox fan but you grew up there for goodness sakes and you see mookie bats, the red sox traded away it off to a start like this and avenue another three homer game. What do you think? Well I. Think it happens on the same day that the red sox give up seventeen runs and look at a single late in the Celtics and Bruins I think both lost and the Patriots are going to start a season without Tom Brady I think this is I think this is a reminder of the come up in Boston sports fans are are about to have to deal with and the next few years now I mean look it's It's a tough pill to swallow for red SOx nation to know that. One of the transformational players of his generation in an era when Mike Trout is playing mu batches is going to be in the conversation. You know there's there's a Jack Nicklaus Arnold. Palmer. Gary Player. There's the Tiger Woods Phil. Mickelson for Awhile, David Duval conversation. I, mean my child's GonNa. Have you know mookie Betts in Clayton Kershaw and that's what this group is going to be about and to know that he was once part of your franchise and now he's not and a franchise paid him a lot of money and you believe your franchise and was capable of doing the same. For those that are moving in dying with the Red Sox I know it sucks. It really really does it's It's just a it's just a reminder and he's got to be that guy we all grew up with them that. Whatever he does he does to a level that few others can do it. So the three six times you know that's the same guy that has four. That's the same guy that bowls three hundred games. The Mookie Betts decision could haunt the Boston Red Sox for a long time

"It didn't take very long for mookie bats. He didn't even suit up for the regular season game for the dodgers yet. He's got that tonight against the giants, and they signed him to a twelve year extension for three hundred sixty five million dollars, so he's twenty seven years of age. This is a lifetime deal in La. Certainly Senate notice to the rest of the National League. We mean business here. We're going to be competitive for a long time. On the flip side if you're a red sox fan, because it feels like this was the the Red Sox said. Hey, you know what or last year. Hey, we're going to regroup and try to come back with a vengeance here in a couple of years and there was thought that maybe mookie Betts would end up back with the red sox. At some point. He started his career there. beloved there, but the front. Office didn't commit to him financially. And now the deal's going to be a referendum on both of these franchises. We move forward. If vets delivers the dodgers win, they're gonNA look great in the Red Sox are going to be reminded of the one that got away for at least the next decade, but you never know about these big deals I would never want to sign a player for more than five years. I would just be nervous about that. Just playing the odds of you staying healthy you staying competitive of the cost that goes along with that athlete there. But. We see this with a lot of these baseball players. You sign him up if it's Mike Trout and if it's Bryce, Harper if it's Garrett Cole you want to lock them in, and also there's going to be a question. mookie Betts, no longer in that hitter, friendly fenway park fans in both cities are going to keep a close eye on mookie and his performance in La. La should be one of the more intriguing subplots in this unusual season, and if you look at the numbers with Mukhi Bats, you know my feelings about Mookie Betts. He was must see TV when he was playing for the Red Sox and that will be the same implying the dodgers i. just don't know if you'll be the same style of player that he was at fenway. then. He's going to be that at dodger stadium if you start to look at the numbers since twenty sixteen where mookie Betts ranks. And I know that we think my trout, the coronation, your best player in baseball in the future hall of fame, absolutely no problem with that. mookie Betts. Was the east. Coast version of Mike Trout from the standpoint of he could do everything. and. He's getting paid to do everything now a runs. Nobody scored more runs since two thousand sixteen hits third doubles I. Even home runs. He's not a home run hitting guy. He's five nine one eighty and five nine, one eighty. Thank you thank you? Nineteenth in home runs. You look at RBI's. He's up there. He's you know. He's in the top ten in stolen bases batting average. "Yes. Anybody to serve this contract. If Mike trout consistent dominant players marvel act. We know how tough it is to be still good so consistently and Mike trout has, you know, easily been the best player of this generation. And you as you heard yet talk about he could go down if he keeps this up as the greatest player of all time. So a lot of jealous players out there not only because of the contract length and the dollar, but he gets to stay in LA, which we love playing. And from my standpoint, I got to spend a few months angel wonder if that's places to play in baseball. At least you're being honest. I appreciate that. I could imagine. There are jealous players out there because that deal is amazing. And of course, why not be in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, let's talk about that franchise. The angels. This franchise has yet to win a playoff game in eight seasons with Mike trout. What does this mean for the angels going forward? Well, Rangers had to sign Mike trout. I mean, he's really untradable think about it. Because of the type of return that you were going to have to get the trade, Mike trout that wasn't going to happen. Not was going to give up their ten best prospects. Right. So the angels had had Detroit or had to sign him and fault. Fault that they haven't won. It's really been the injuries. And you look at last year they had fifteen players at one time on the guys like Shohei Otani, you what are the most exciting players in baseball. He missed significant time, Tommy, John. I mean, they signed big players though. No big time players. He's the money the money. They've already spent money. It just hasn't translated to ws in the season and October. You want him to put the team on his back so to speak. It's a lot harder and baseball to do that. But I'm not sure what more you want. This guy to do. Second MVP last year fourth and twenty seventeen one it and twenty sixteen also wanted in twenty fourteen like this guy is producing on the field. He's producing may look in angels. They've spent money whether it was Josh Hamilton Vernon will CJ Wilson. They spit the money. But now this kind of money is a little bit different. And we've seen it now with a couple of contracts. But it will you think about the NFL? They're still no way the whys coming to this kind of money. So I know when I wake up this morning, I four thirty. I know NFL players like Leon should've picked up baseball. I mean think about Antonio Brown just pulled everything that he pulled. So we can get thirty million guaranteed over the course of his contract at Mike child's getting five more than that per season. You this contract? Also does one thing it does stir up the conversation of possibly or what collar Murray possibly giving up. And I know Peter king's been all over it. Peter king. He'll join us next. I do want to get his thoughts. We've already passed the Cuyler Murray..

"Because as you said, you know, the the cost for all these players salaries for all these players in that category. Is naturally going to go up and a domino certainly fell into direction of our beloved, hembo, Paulin bikinis affiliate guy Philly's fan. He probably already added trout, Phillies jersey some place right next to his Harper jersey. Well, guess what dreams just died for him? Oh, yeah. He probably got a good deal because he ordered those two jerseys in bulk, you know, two for one kind of thing. But now one of them's a nice little collector's item. That never came true. I thought about buying a Greg Oden Celtics jersey when it looked like they were going to win didn't do it. I kind of wish that I had. But yeah, now, it's similar for hembo with his Mike trout Phillies jersey, but I don't feel that bad for him. He's still got Harper on his squad. Things could be worse. Yeah. Exactly. We'll hear from hembo. On Wednesdays podcasts. We're also going to hear from Perez from Tokyo right after he calls the seas. Opening game between the Mariners flex. We mentioned. We're going to be talking with Michael Conforto with Andrew mccutchen. It should be a great show. Again, can't Keith law to BUSTER. Oh, yeah. That's right. Yeah. Okay. And we got keep laws. "Every day. I'm BUSTER only and Josh we got done our podcast this morning a regular taping. In the news broke, Jeff passan, twelve years. Four hundred thirty million dollars in a deal for Mike trout. I gotta say I heard it, and yeah, when you hear the numbers you like, wow. But I kind of wasn't surprised how about you. Well, you say that I'm the producer for the show every day, which is halfway accurate, but it would be more accurate. If you said, the producer for our show who has the worst timing in the world because I literally hit the published button on our first podcast of the day. And not fifteen seconds later. My phone blows up might trout signs this deal. See it all over. Twitter. I'm like, you've got to be kidding me. We literally just finished in this happens all the time. And I kind of expected to happen in late July around the trade deadline where we'll wrap up and then something big happens. But man, oh, man, I'm sitting here in the middle of March. And you're telling me all of a sudden the show that we just worked so hard on is suddenly obsolete and just kidding week. We do still have a lot of good conversation the first podcast today. But boy that was discouraging to see that happen when it did. Yeah. And we gotta address this for sure. And I mentioned just said I wasn't really surprised and I'll tell you why. I mean, you know, I got a lot of chance to spend a lot of time with Mike and his family when I was working at east sixty for a period of at eighteen months and first off he someone who values what he has. He's not someone who's always complaining about what what you know, the the organization that he's in about his situation. He's not looking for a bigger better deal someplace else reflexively, and there's certainly a lot of people not only in baseball. But in all walks of life who are like that the last summer I was having a conversation with Billy apple or the general manager of the angels. And he mentioned to me that trout was so invested in the angels minor leaguers like there would be a box score. That would pop up in in. From game the night before and traveled. Look over the box score need, call Billy. And he'd be like, hey, you got you got a phone number for that kid who got three hits last night in classic. Hey, do you tell me about this guy who just lit it up last night in AA tell me about this player? Let me reach out to this guy..

"You know, not any I thought Haskins could be similar to Rothlisberger. But Rothlisberger is a is a really really big guy. He's at least six five, and he's probably to sixty Haskins is six three probably two thirty in a big difference in their like when you're around Ben. And you see a defensive lineman throwing them around, and you go man, I mean, that's a herculean task. Because Ben is a big guy. But to be able to move to sidestep to be able to have that vision. That's really important. I don't know if Haskins had that one scout said if you move him off his Mark, he's not very good. So in scouting vernacular. If I get you a little uncomfortable out of the pocket or you're not where you like to throw. Then you're not you're not as good. But you know, we nitpick. But that's what happens this time of the year. We'll check in with the Phillies coming up the great baseball writer Jayson stark. And really the point of this for me. Is you got Bryce Harper. And I think it's a team friendly deal. But also Bryce Harper saying publicly I've had conversations with Mike trout. The likelihood of Mike trout turning down the angels extension. Even if it's going to be twelve or thirteen years for four hundred million dollars, and it'll be in that range. What do you want to go home to play with the Phillies? And is that the plan?
