"Buying it. But I'm willing to listen. So what does Dave Roberts do from this point as a dodger managers trying to get guys going I know there's managers that have a tendency to tinker try to shuffled their lineup trying to do anything they can to get guys going what does he do? What can he do? What should he do in your opinion? Needs to let it happen to be honest and he was asked yesterday about the possibility of just going back to mookie Betts being 'cause leadoff hitter. He hasn't batted mookie. Betts. leadoff particularly against right handers this year which was Kinda. Surprised when the season began because mookie was such a great leadoff hitter with the Red Sox all these years but he didn't WanNa do it because he wanted to sort of he wanted to divide as left and right handed hitter so that teams can't go to the bullpen and just bring in a specialist and then they have an advantage in back toback spots it gives them more freedom. With how he handled his lineup and he was asked about just going back to mookie betts hitting leadoff because he's done so well, and he made the point that I could put movie bets leadoff. There are eight other guys in the lineup and hitting mookie Betts leadoff is not gonna fix the eight other guys in the lineup. So you know and unfortunately for the dodgers, a Lotta guys are struggling right now. So it's not like you could just keep moving guys around the only thing that you can hope for is that. These guys are GonNa get going and I'll say it again and I really believe this. I think they are going to get going. I think what we're seeing is more just sort of broad about the league but like I can't fathom that cody bellinger's not gonna hit that Max months, he's not gonna hit but just GonNa hit and I think a good thing about what you're seeing with them at least is they're taking their walks they're not chasing as much and we saw this with Anthony Rendong the angels. Third Baseman designed over the off season. Enron was really struggling. But what what you ended up seeing with random no was even while he was struggling, you're not getting hit. He was taking his walk, which means that he was seeing pitches. He was looking over strikes and over these last two days Anthony Rendell don't looks like Anthony Again. So usually when good established are seeing are taking pictures, they're taking their walks usually the other part of that comes to fruition and you're you're GonNa you'd think that that's going to happen with your STU. Covers Major League baseball for ESPN, and it kind of stick with the angels here for a second Alden, they played a little bit better late than won a couple of games in a row or they've one of those teams where you say you know everybody is GonNa get in or close to it or we're GONNA. Have another season where Mike Trout does not play in October. Two that one's tough for me because they got off to such a slow start and the the good thing for them is that the Astros are so banged up that I mean they're basically their entire pitching staff is composed of rookies in their bullpen is messed which you saw yesterday but the as of already run away with the division basically and again luckily for. Them, it's the Astros, the Rangers, the mariners they're all within distance. So yeah, I keep going back to that everybody's GonNa make the playoffs, but they got off to social slow start that it does make you worry about them a little bit The good thing for them is that they've gotten nationally some good starting pitching even though Shohei Otani is not gonna be able to pitch them. With Dylan Bundy is given, them has been amazing Griffin canning look. Good. Andrew. Heaney is look good. That's a team that I saw like similar to the padres I looked at the angels team that. They're really good for sixty game season because while they're not a team that has its depth that dodgers might have they have star talent they have talented players at the top of their roster that need to show up and so. One thing. You've seen a winning these two games against the as has been huge for them. But through that, you saw random back to who he is. You saw Otani. hitter really start to emerge into who he can be as a hitter and mean, you look at that lineup and I i. I thought I mean spring training it was obvious that align. Anthony. Rendon and Mike Trout and Shohei Otani and if Justin Upton could get going, I mean that's One of the better lineups in baseball. So they just pitch enough my. Facial define again, they've been really fortunate that the rest of the teams in the Al West except for the as have guys NAS to a slow start to. See. He's a pro I'm reading. His articles and lack of crowd noise doesn't bother him. No. All I go way back, we used to talk when he was covered. It'll be dot com I was over that we know. We're we're all always a pleasure doing so much? Thank you so much pleasure. Thank you. You've got it. So that's good news. If you're an angel fan here, Alden say it that they can crawl back into it, but this was the concern right for all these teams to Marco. If you get off to a bad start sixty game season, you can get buried in a week and change and there's just not enough time to dig out of it. Angels are trying, but it's GonNa be close because the as are running away with it and still not in that top to set not far out of that second spike but we'll Ping's gobbled up. All right. We had problem with Dame Lillard before we give you some of these numbers to marco. The Lakers should be very, very concerned about this guy that's next on the morning show on seven ten ESPN. would good Wednesday everybody and Demarco, I, gotTa tell you. I am watching dating Willard highlights all over again. In front of me right now I do not need that man to be a part of my life in another week or so I would very much like him to just go away. He's a real gary do yeah. Big, Time I. You know there are a lot of people out there on that list right now. Go away forever please. Yeah that's it's not a short list but Manaf, I'm a Laker Fan and and I am. He makes my blood run cold. There just showed a whole bunch of super highlight. Ripped him knocking down thirty, four, hundred, thirty, footer sixty, one night. He joins Wilt Chamberlain as only the second player ever to score sixty or more points. Three different times in his career just just just crazy just a nominal flair. It's always those guys that poked the bear or they awaken the sleeping dragon and I used to say this to guys that would have the block Bryant Young. Warren Sapp you know whatever you do is you have a good play against them just don't say anything because you if he's asleep good if you wake him up, it's bad for everybody..

"Other teams could say, and usually they don't they've always had that option, but often they don't because they know well, if we make them check their guy than they might retaliate and make us check our guy and our guys probably doing it too. So that's a problem. In this case, there's a possibility that bowers just doing it better than most people are because he has come up with some special mix. You know he has talked about how he is created combinations of substances that produce a great effect when he is tested it, and so it's possible. That other guys are just getting their sticky stuff off the rack and he is in the lab tinkering for the perfect mixture, and that's why he has had this very dramatic improvement may be as he is getting a greater improvement than the typical pitcher does when they use foreign substances and in that case, you might say, well, even if it hurts us, it would hurt them more for him to lose this ability and so it would be worth checking but I do wonder 'cause mopey sent to a memo around this spring and there is some discussion of do they mean it? Are they really serious but it suggested that they Were really going to be kind of cracking down on this and monitoring it more closely, and if you want anyone to believe that that's true and that there are any teased this, then I feel like you can't just this seemingly not conclusively. But possibly blatant example of someone starting to use something go by without even making any attempt to stop it and you know for all. I know they've warned them maybe they've said something to him I have no idea but it is something that I wonder as he continues to pitch. Well, he does it seems like more and more people are noticing this and bringing it up and it. would be kind of a constant storyline for the rest of his season. So curious to see how that goes an yeah. He has not talked about it recently as far as I know when I was writing during Spring Training, I requested a conversation with him about it and he was not interested. He declined at the time and I believe Jeff Passan also tried to talk to him about what happened with him last September and declined that request to so he has suddenly seemingly gone silent on this topic, which is somewhat suspicious given how open he's been about it before. But again, we shall see. All right. Let's answer some emails. This is a question from Daniel and this was sent before the season started I think he says so with of this time away from Sports I've done a lot of thinking about just what I love about them while I know that you guys have covered this episodes before in various amounts I'm more interested in how you feel about projections and what pleasure you derive from them on the one hand when I listened to you guys particularly. Ben. You seem almost thrilled when a player bucks the projection that was expected of him on the other hand I can't imagine that you'd Enjoy A. World in which every player does the opposite of what they were expected to do Mike Trout at the bottom of a world leader board. So in each of your perfect worlds, how accurate do projections need to be in order to continue to enjoy them how much chaos you want in your baseball lives, and of course, we are in the midst of the most chaotic season we can recall. So I guess this is a good time to talk about this. My trout by the way is not currently at the bottom of the war leaderboard, but I don't know have you noticed that he has. Severely negative drs in yeah I have which. Has Been Great Right as ominous as great and so you know fifteen games of D. R.. S. He hasn't even played. Fifteen Games is arguably nothing combination of an odd series of attempts that were presented to them or it could be I mean it could be any sort of number things. You would. Not. What I'm saying is you would not take it seriously but the point is that the moment might trout's wars is is frustrating me. CHEF. Sullivan had a tweet that I think about a lot is June eleventh two thousand eleven a little less than a month before might trout debuted and when he was the greatest prospect anybody ever seen exaggerating there but not by much and he tweeted baseball would be so much more interesting. If might trout failed. And I think about that tweet all the time because I wonder if Jeff the leaves it. Now at the time we thought might trout would be a star a pretty good. I mean, we thought he'd be a star. He was the best prospect in the game and four the best player in the game you expect I don't know you're thinking well, he might have how what? would. You guess the median if you count people who who, who, if you don't count people who failed like that the people who actually failed which not naming names here but some top prospects in baseball actually do fail. But for the most part they don't they have long careers and probably the median war for those players is like out on a forty or forty, five war and. Some of them are what you're really thinking that you're GonNa get a perennial MVP candidate and maybe you're thinking seventy or eighty war hall of Famer and you don't expect a player who's the the greatest player through age twenty eight in history and and is on pace to maybe have one hundred and forty four. So I wonder if Jeff still feels that baseball would actually be so much more interesting if might. Trout had failed I. think that probably not I think that saying for the most part is that there's a certain amount of joy when a projection nails player like right on the dot there is a even better joy when a player dramatically outperforms yet like a Max Muncie or might trout might trout his dramatically outperforming his projections and it's been Super Fun and I think that there is very rarely much pleasure in. Seeing a player underperform you need to have enough so that it's somewhat interesting so that there's tension the sport has tension but I think that I don't take all missed projections equally is what I'm saying yeah. Well, even if might trout where just a garden variety great player then maybe you could make more of a case that it would be more fun if he had failed just because there are. A lot of cart variety great players says what guard riding means, but Mike Trout is just so singular that that has been maybe the greatest source of joy in baseball for me since he came up and one thing that is probably the one thing, and so certainly would not want to sacrifice that under any circumstances but I think it's true that baseball is probably more entertaining if some top prospects l. you do. You do need to have some. It's true. You're right. Baseball is much more interesting because filling the blank whoever you're thinking of right now failed it. Yeah. It just is more interesting than because of that because of. I mean there are especially because you know every failure, every great player who doesn't develop every player who gets old super rapidly it's its own kind of story it. It's different reasons. In fact, it can be harder to explain it is harder to explain it's a lot harder. I. Still Find it harder to explain brandon would than might trout and I said the name. Were thinking I was. Only because I knew you were. Written about him before but life. But yeah. Yeah I think you want some joy when a player does turn out to be great and if every player who was supposed to turn out to be great turned out to be great then wouldn't be special. You need some uncertainties of unpredictability. There has to be some danger and some tension and some chance that that players not gonna pin out or else. Well, we saw this coming ten years ago and La Di da he's. He's great. So that's true and it can be sort of fascinating to contemplate how an individual player failed when he had everything going for him and maybe you learned something from that specific case or maybe you never do and it just remains a mystery forever but I agree with you that it is far more exciting on the whole when a player comes out of nowhere and Gets good. All of a sudden and no one was expecting that player to be goods that was kind of the type of player. The MVP machine came out of that's why we were all so enamored and remain enamored of rich hills and.

"Not In the mood he's he's played like eight games. See of course field. He hasn't yet what the hell he's not in the mood. He's he's not in the homeland in mood. That's why as an owner yet next. Jd. Martinez Aka just Dinger's why haven't you homered yet dude what the Hell There's the super tall wall in left field in his home stadium that makes it hard to hit homers because you have to hit like really high over it. So that's why he isn't over yet. That's true. He really struggled doubles. He really struggled to hit home runs the last two seasons in Boston when he hit forty, three and thirty. Also just opposites right he's. He's leading the League in doubles. So it's not like he's coming close. He just he just not all those extra base hits just doubles. Okay that's true. Gandhi. Diaz. You are the the most ripped human being I've ever seen on a baseball field. Why haven't you homered yet? Yeah. DDS too strong. He's strong. He's too strong and. The real answer. This question is that. Does not swing up this man swings incredibly hard incredibly strong, but he hits the ball into the ground. He is the most likely big leaguer to produce underground her. Well said perhaps crazier about Gandhi doesn't even have an RBI yet. Which? which is tough to do all right couple more here. This one goes out to our wonderful mets fan producer, Bobby Wagner Jeff McNeil why haven't you homered yet man what the hell? Selflessness. Doesn't want to distract. Just WanNa take there's been this help going on There's been so much going on with the mets over the first couple of weeks, and like everyone knows at home runs are like super distracting and he doesn't WanNa. Make it about him. Right there are certain baseball cultures where like home runs aren't there like selfish rate it's not about your teammates and I think Jeff McNeil. Hitting home runs is being a good teammate and I think we should commend for that. I agree I agree all right last one and this one really kind of hit me. Because his homers are very important to us, former baseball barbecue guests, reese hoskins. Why haven't you homered yet dude what? What the? Hell Because the phillies were forced to take a week off of games because the marlins irresponsibly played them with multiple positive tests and so then the phillies had to stay in a hotel for a week and upon exiting that hotel after not having seen live pitching for over seven days, they were forced to face Garrett. the best home run hitter air. Sorry. Best Pitcher in the world and so that Kinda put him in Schneider. I will say yesterday hit a bunch of balls really really hard. I'm not worried about Republicans but if you're asking why Jordan it's, that's why. I think it's coming. I think we'll be congratulated recent homer this week I feel I feel pretty good about that. All right. Well, that's this week's edition of Why haven't you homer jet now listen there are a few I really catch it two guys who've had at least forty plate appearances there. Certainly someone's lower down that are also questionable but as this list as these played appearances climb and that home run column stays zero, we're going to be asking these guys the tough questions why haven't you homer yet? Hopefully. We can get one of them on. David Doll David Doll I. Haven't you homered yet. By the way, the active leader in plate appearances without a home runs Cesar notice of Cleveland. But I. Like homer guy. So I didn't I didn't feel like you know accusing him. All right. Let's move on to segment. We debut last week that we love. So dearly, it is time for another edition of sorry for your mentions Jake, what is this segment all about? sometimes baseball. Play. Poorly. and when that happens the social media people for the team are forced to tweet out like a final score or news and those mentions are tough for them. the social media person for the angels say. Didn't fail. This week, the team did but yet they are the ones who are forced to sift through the mentioned Jordan this week, we're doing the angels. pod angels swept. Swept by the Texas, Rangers also lost the game to the Seattle. Mariners. So embarrassing, they have Mike Trout and Anthony ran down and yet it doesn't matter. Jordan tell me about their mentions. All right. So we're just GONNA go kind of game by game of their three-game sweep. against. Texas here So we're just going to read some of the measures. Of course we're GONNA omit the actual twitter users here because they don't they don't deserve clout they deserve their their words being spoke podcast and twitter's platform. All right. Let's begin on Friday where they lost the game four to three I believe on my child's birthday where he homered and they still lost. first response here. This tweet says upton is vernon wells and Riendeau needs to start hitting. Very very poignant. Actually Upton is not very well as upton is is upton. So. That's true. He's not very radio needs to start hitting. That is a legitimate critique, absolute fact absolute fact and that was before he went over for for the rest of the weekend. Another one here from this game This tweet says, this is really depressing. This is honestly the core. This is like this hits home. At least we gotta trout homer on his day because that's all we play for. That one I mean. Yeah. But Also this person's twitter name is trout homers in angels lots. Are One more from this game. Again, also, very angel lives here. This one says not the worst team in baseball, but certainly the most disappointing year after year. I get these are like the mets ones were so outrageous and into the. Don't worry. We have some of those because these are like really real. All right let's move to Saturdays Laws Final Angels Zero Rangers, to this gentleman says that is a sufficient sample size to say angels are a bad team planet. Simple epilogue should refresh his resume time to clean house and start over again, all caps Here's another one plain and simple As I said, we really can't make a sixteen team playoff pain. Tweet your emotion that you're feeling at the end of your tweet. Right, I agree. All right. Let's move to the sweep on Sunday. This one is hilarious i. this one I think is very fine. Final angels three seven this person says, what does are hitting coach get paid to do yoga practice today boy your homework is to watch Albert back when he was thin and athletic on the cardinals, you'll be tested on it tomorrow angels on three one, two,.

Remember when, 10 innings too, and the Blue Jays walked it off 5 to 4. Travis shot at the game when he in the 10th the Marlins had a little magic working. Well, yeah, you know, extra under a second base to start the inning. Ah, little more extra on this one, though. Austin Hayes hit it, and it was an inside the park home run past the diving center fielder. I think that was Roman Quinn and the ball roll all the way to the fence, and he's made it all the way around. So the inside the park two run homer wins it and the Orioles hang on for the 10 to 9 victory in 10 innings in Philadelphia lawyer Jimenez homer and drove in four, leading the White Sox over the Tigers eight for Austin. The Mookie Betts decision could haunt the Boston Red Sox for a long time

"It didn't take very long for mookie bats. He didn't even suit up for the regular season game for the dodgers yet. He's got that tonight against the giants, and they signed him to a twelve year extension for three hundred sixty five million dollars, so he's twenty seven years of age. This is a lifetime deal in La. Certainly Senate notice to the rest of the National League. We mean business here. We're going to be competitive for a long time. On the flip side if you're a red sox fan, because it feels like this was the the Red Sox said. Hey, you know what or last year. Hey, we're going to regroup and try to come back with a vengeance here in a couple of years and there was thought that maybe mookie Betts would end up back with the red sox. At some point. He started his career there. beloved there, but the front. Office didn't commit to him financially. And now the deal's going to be a referendum on both of these franchises. We move forward. If vets delivers the dodgers win, they're gonNA look great in the Red Sox are going to be reminded of the one that got away for at least the next decade, but you never know about these big deals I would never want to sign a player for more than five years. I would just be nervous about that. Just playing the odds of you staying healthy you staying competitive of the cost that goes along with that athlete there. But. We see this with a lot of these baseball players. You sign him up if it's Mike Trout and if it's Bryce, Harper if it's Garrett Cole you want to lock them in, and also there's going to be a question. mookie Betts, no longer in that hitter, friendly fenway park fans in both cities are going to keep a close eye on mookie and his performance in La. La should be one of the more intriguing subplots in this unusual season, and if you look at the numbers with Mukhi Bats, you know my feelings about Mookie Betts. He was must see TV when he was playing for the Red Sox and that will be the same implying the dodgers i. just don't know if you'll be the same style of player that he was at fenway. then. He's going to be that at dodger stadium if you start to look at the numbers since twenty sixteen where mookie Betts ranks. And I know that we think my trout, the coronation, your best player in baseball in the future hall of fame, absolutely no problem with that. mookie Betts. Was the east. Coast version of Mike Trout from the standpoint of he could do everything. and. He's getting paid to do everything now a runs. Nobody scored more runs since two thousand sixteen hits third doubles I. Even home runs. He's not a home run hitting guy. He's five nine one eighty and five nine, one eighty. Thank you thank you? Nineteenth in home runs. You look at RBI's. He's up there. He's you know. He's in the top ten in stolen bases batting average. He puts up numbers all around good fielder as well by all accounts, good clubhouse guy, so the dodgers are investing in somebody who will be the face of the franchise for years to

How MLB can get creative, experiment and make the most of a delayed season

"Well today should have been a really big day I'll build up day for the sport of major league baseball's tomorrow of course was the opening day we're gonna play last year's opening day four o'clock tomorrow they'll be happy to kind of get our fix I know I'm going to need it I know Major League Baseball and different platforms thrown out a bunch of classic games to more people to watch it's not gonna be the same tomorrow's supposed to be opening day we don't know when this is going to happen but today here's a way to get today and what about Corey Seidman NBC sports Philadelphia second here to talk about all the stuff today there was a whole bunch Jeff Passan ESPN Ken Rosenthal of the athletic and Jayson stark and everyone was kind of writing about Hey baseball trying to get together down figure out what this could look like when it does return Scott Boras that idea for the World Series are Christmas twice weekly double headers and all star week start kind of starting the season with the all star game there's a lot of ideas being floated in the I I think you just have a vote you probably would vote in like the most popular players like Bryce Harper yeah they did a fan vote right now who to get in Mike trout Bryce Harper I think those guys that like have a random good year who don't vote for them because you don't know what's going to happen you don't have any sex or anything like that well that's a good thing let's let's bring a Corey Seidman NBC sports Philadelphia joining us right now what's up Corey not much your I think I was outside for eleven seconds to learn so you know it's just another day another day in quarantine yeah you know what's happened to me Korean I think part of it is the the rhythm of the sports calendar like the Sixers play Tuesday all of you know that Phillies have this spring training in this day I just have no idea what day it is like I know the weekends the weekend as I'm not doing a show but like I I don't even know what day it is like Tuesday Wednesday it's all the same right now yeah I totally hear you I feel the same way in like every article I've written recently I've written the wrong there's always you know if I'm saying you know this players at this on Monday or this guy's like I always have a drunkard we in that way still the dog days of the baseball season because quite frankly that's how it gets during a hundred sixty two game schedule for me as well yeah well we're not having one of those this year that that that is that's for certain we don't know what the season will look like hopefully will be played the court today there a lot ideas being thrown out by people that know people in baseball weather be Jeff Passan or Ken Rosenthal Jayson stark ideas what this could look like don't know throw a couple at you and you tell me what you thought when you saw or as I say it what's your thought on it seems like they want to play as many games as possible when we're allowed to to make it a representative season you know if we start in July we're looking at basically half a year but today I I saw a passive wrote that players are open to the idea of of maybe up to once a week or twice a week having double headers what do you think about that I think it's going to be a necessity because to me it feels like the magic numbers like a hundred twenty issue games if you can get that many in the season I don't think they sold one any fewer than a hundred and when you start to think about how long how deep you're going to get into the calendar let's say you know even if you were the most optimistically instead of the regular season could potentially start on June first okay if it's a hundred twenty greens into regular season if it starts on June first even if you have no off days that would end in works like for suckers out in October right so then you're talking about the beginning of the playoffs the plastic about what three three and a half weeks and months so the very safest estimate would have that season ended in early November so I just feel like you're gonna have to have double headers in some form it would be irresponsible I think baseball to having three forties a week once a week all year I would to AT and record the thing is if the players are okay with that that then I and then I'm on board I would think they wouldn't be because of that what it would do to them but the one part about is if we if we go down that route if they're gonna do multiple double headers a week to make it a more representative season they have to adjust the rosters that they have to help these teams especially with pitchers like I already I'm projecting there's going to be more injuries because picture to try to ramp back up and it's it's gonna be a whole thing like the whole the whole set up of the twenty six man roster the limits on pictures that they'd have to ease that or change that well I think it's going to be an expanded roster when the season first begins and it might be an expanded roster all the way through you know you could see roster as the twenty eight guys thirty die instead of twenty six because think about what the issues are brought up right starting pitchers are not going to be going deep into games especially the first month or so of this regular season like it's gonna be quite a while until the team feels comfortable turning loose their east coast seven innings because you got to be thinking about the long term I mean there are some benefits to that as well because you know the shortened season I'm thinking of a guy like Aaron always been a two hundred twelve innings and two hundred two innings the last few years now what he has no choice but to have a a lesser workload in twenty twenty so perhaps that helps him out long term but I I'm with you on the pitching injuries it's a major concern that's why I don't think it should be double headers multiple days a week because then thank you probably first possibly appearing in both games of a doubleheader you know you just open up all these other cans of worms Corey Seidman NBC sports Philadelphia joining us here as we discuss you know what's going on with all these talks in baseball how they could put this season together whatever starts a Corey Tesco Boris and I'm not surprised he would he become a radical idea he doesn't mind the idea of this thing lasting till next Christmas and having neutral site games the playoffs Corey I am okay with that to start the season without fans just so they could start the season I'll I'll watch and listen to baseball even if I can't go to baseball games but the idea on the back and if it lasts really long already the thought is well I will play in neutral sites where it's warmer so like Philadelphia New York Boston you really can't play baseball there November December but you can and Miami in Arizona what not I feel like the post season without the fans because of the weather and and the date that wouldn't feel right I don't think baseball plays right in a neutral site what do you think no I don't I wouldn't like that either I mean it would result in a winning team the fans what no fan would have gotten to experience that that clinching World Series game which is you know that's that's a tough pill to swallow I mean I don't think this is gonna last Christmas that's you know fun content from sky force but I think there are other issues at play to like Christmas is one of the biggest things that you're looking at the calendar they're still NFL regular season going on it's beach season baseball would really be competing for eyeballs at the World Series repeat right around that time I don't think it's going to get that far it's a great you know you can't have an outdoor sport that you know go that long when you're still making some cold weather cities like baseball it's not like football it's not designed to be played in thirty degree weather we see that in April every year when you know you have guys wearing long sleeves and your skin grip the ball in those early season

Sho Time: Angels' Shohei Ohtani Returns to Form

"We're talking about the angels and not Mike Trout Ouden. Gonzales covers baseball for ESPN. He was recently angels. Camp attract the recovery of two way superstar. Shohei Ohtani. Who's a big star might trout or Shohei Ohtani. I think Shohei is a bigger star. You should see just the media presence that follows him everywhere. They're like twenty Japanese reporters in spring training. Who are just like following him around everywhere. Unlike Mike. Trout doesn't have that people are interested like they're fascinated by this guy so you save time. He's back but he played last season. What do you mean when you say Otani is back? Shohei Otani is back to being the fullest version of himself. Couple years ago came early from Japan in his early twenties and he showed that a player can thrive the highest levels of the sport by being a very competent hitter. Sil- a lights out pitcher GONNA MISS DOT goes down nasty splitter straight down swing that last year spent the two thousand nine hundred nine season rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery while hitting in the lineup. Now starting around May of this season. We're going to see that two way sensation again. I don't think baseball has been excited about a player. A longtime. Why is there so much excitement around Shohei right now because we literally haven't seen this in a hundred years because it's new because maybe it gives us hope that we're gonNA continue to see this? From other athletes in the future. He was just scratching the surface of just how good he can be. And now we get a chance to see it for an entire year. That's incredibly exciting. Well we will get eventually just not at the start of the season right. Yeah so the angels are going to be very conservative with Shohei Ohtani. He had the Tommy John Surgery in October of two thousand eighteen. He had knee surgery in September of Twenty nineteen throughout April. He's GonNa serve as a designated hitter and because of the new rule that allows for two way players. He can go rehab on a minor league assignment as a pitcher in the meantime so he's going to be able to hit in their lineup. As a designated hitter you're probably bat cleanup or bat third behind Mike Trout. I'm going to say maybe four to five times a week and then at some point around the middle of May he's GonNa be a starting pitcher for them to the grand experiment will be back on basically. Yes this experiment. The wrong word. No I think experiment is still the right word because in so many ways the angels are sort of setting the blueprint for how something like this done. They have nothing else to go on except for maybe what he did in Japan which is completely different league. They don't travel across time zones in Japan. They don't play as many games. In Japan. Angels are doing this by themselves. He's going to start once a week. Not once every five games he is not going to hit either the day before he starts or the day after his starts and he's definitely not going to be in the line up on the day of his start so you're looking at twenty starts in the season maybe one hundred games in the lineup. Still a good amount but definitely going the conservative route there. Let's back up to win. Shohei I came to baseball two years ago. What were the expectations like for him? And why was he so special? Will those a lot of wonder about a guy attempting to do this? There was a lot of doubt definitely but a lot of the people scouted him in Japan. Came Away raving about this guy. His batting practices are the stuff of legend. He's incredibly fast. He might be just as fast as Mike Trout. And that's one thing that people don't talk about on the pitching side. The Guy Those one hundred miles an hour he throws a split finger. That's like one of the nastiest pitches that you'll ever see so you have a guy coming over here with that kind of talent and the fascinating thing about Shohei is. He shows up to spring training in two thousand eighteen. And he's awful. He can't get anybody out. Pitching seven runs in the inning. So not the day that. Otani was hoping for today here facing the rocky. Looks like a mess in the batter's box completely off balance chasing pitches. Here's the next delivery and that is a big swing and miss thereby and within like four to five weeks of him attempting to do this. You have scouts saying that he's not going to be able to hit in the major leagues. You have people saying that. He needs to start the season in the minors. You have people saying that the angels should completely scrap their plans of having him be a two way player and just let him try to develop as a pitcher. Because it's too hard to do it at this level and then all of a sudden the season starts and it's like a light switch goes off. Here's the next pitch and he lets well hidden and the right center.

The Brewers are working on contract extension with Christian Yelich that could exceed $200 million

"Christian Yelich might be the next superstar in sports to put pen to paper on a massive contract the brewers India which are closing in on what is being reported as a nine year two hundred fifteen million dollar contract now if you're like me when you first hear that nine years and two hundred fifteen million for Christian Yelich who was the MVP two seasons ago any runner up for the most valuable player award last year when he got hurt and missed a month you're probably thinking to fifteen does not seem like enough and I would tend to agree with you about that he is taking a dramatic discount to sign this extension which is basically seven years a hundred ninety million in new money when you just saw it the rain don't who hadn't been in the top two in MVP voting over the last two years in the National League get seven years and two hundred forty five million to go to the angels in free agency when you've seen our unato in Colorado no one or not get a massive two hundred and thirty plus million dollar contract over eight seasons and here we're talking about new money seven and one ninety for a guy who might be the best player in the National League the deal was first reported today by the athletics some of the details of trickled out of come from ESPN's Jeff Passan he's got this basically yellowish would play the next two seasons starting this year on his current contract so he's scheduled to make I was about to say only how funny is that only twelve and a half million in two thousand twenty and then fourteen million next year but you know I laughed at that as far as the production B. provides and and the elite performance is gonna provide Daddy's shopping in the bargain bin that's finding one of your favorite movies in the five dollar DVD been at your favorite electronics store so the extension for that seventy one ninety would basically kick in for the brewers in two thousand twenty two and go through two thousand twenty eight and there be a mutual option in the final year in twenty twenty nine but you go back two seasons ago when Yelich won the M. V. P. he established himself after leaving Miami where he was an excellent hater and a lot of folks felt like maybe he would win a batting title at some point but didn't get a lot of help we did have a lot of production and protection rather to go along with his production there just weren't players around him as good as him to help him out as they were going to getting rid of all their pieces Giancarlo Stanton Marcello's owner he was the last guy standing so we got to go to Milwaukee and give it a try there and immediately flourished completely took off and became one of the greats in the sport and for my money right now this moment Christian Yelich of the brewers is the most underrated player in baseball which might sound ludicrous considering that he wanted MVP award is finished in the top two twice in two years but I still think when we have conversations in this industry about who the best baseball players are Mike trout's name comes out of everyone's mouth first then you get some of the bigger names that maybe don't even belong in that conversation right now based on performance like Bryce Harper Manny Machado those types but who is the second best player in the sport yeah which might be the answer Cody Bellinger won the MVP award with the Dodgers last year is in that vicinity I'd say there's a a four player tier behind trout vying for the number two seed in the sport with the yellow shoes twenty eight Ballenger who's only twenty four just barely starting to think about Mookie Betts becks is now twenty seven went from Boston to LA this offseason in a deal that took forever to consummate and Alex Bregman the twenty five year old villain now with the Astros who is so much better four in the wake of finding out that Houston Bregman has cheated over the last couple of seasons at least dating back to seventeen and some of eighteen that they've admitted to Bregman the MVP of the American League last year in my opinion ended up not finishing right behind trout and I kind of quantify things as non trout division because he should just get the award every year so I kind of say well other than trap who was the MVP this year you're competing against a legend the likes of which is going to go down as maybe the best players ever lived or one of them no one of the mount Rushmore baseball stars essentially and a guy that you'll meet people listening right now we're not gonna see another player like him probably in our

"Put It on the poll. Guillermo please at Lebatardshow is got his voice. Fine seems to be always allergy seasons guts. Yep because it is. I have a theory that Things are always going around right. You always hear that phrase. Oh it's going around it ever never going around. It's just always consistently going around. Yes I don't think this is going around though. I think it just seems to have stuck on Stugatz. His voice box allergies can start in some places as early as January rights allergy season. I mean my voice. It seems like it's like normal today had some flam early on but I've always seems texts all weekend from people asking his guts all right based on whatever it is they heard from you last week. It was multiple people asking me if you were okay. Okay I'm okay. Thank you everyone. I went to a doctor. I gotTA checked out. He said I'm fine billy. What do you have for me on the Astros needing to shut up? I don't remember. They just should stop talking. A what do you mean why you're done with it now? Yeah I mean they're saying all these things because there's no consequences for anything. They say now their feelings hurt because people know they're cheaters. Stop talking you can't get offended. You got no punishment that's it. I like what Alex Korea had to say. I mean he was defending Carlos Correa. I'm sorry by fine two dollars. I I like what he had to say. I mean he's defending Jose L. Tubay he's telling people. Hey you don't know all the facts. I'm okay with that. Like he is defending guy on his team who he thinks. He's a really good player. Who wanted nothing to do with you? Know the hitting of trash cans to alert him. What was coming on the wrong with that. That maybe cheaters. Stola world series and now people are mad. You deal with it. The end one of the fact but one of that part is true and not being represented. What part the OUTTA vapours? Okay but altuve is still benefited from all his teammates cheating because people get on base because they know the pitch that are coming he won a world series because they won games he won an MVP because they've won more games as a team. Where if they would've lost ten or fifteen more games he may not have won the MVP so he may not have been doing it every single at bat and he may not have liked it but he's still benefited from the fact that his teammates were cheating. He may benefit from it. But it is important for someone to point out that Jose altuve was not indeed partaking. What everyone else was partaking it? That's important to me. I don't know what he was partaking in and wasn't partaking in but because all of them benefited from this and all of them are under a cloud of suspicion. I feel like any skepticism that you direct toward anybody when you look at what happened. For example they they went from having a ton of strikeouts to being first in the league. In not striking out they had the highest O. P. S. on fastballs they had the highest O. P. S. on breaking pitches like they knew what was coming. I don't know which one of them's which one of them knew and didn't know what was coming but they knew what was coming. I WanNa read. Watch some of these games. Because you're they're trying to say al Qaeda and participate. Okay so if I watched some of those Astros Games back you mean to tell me. I'm not going to hear someone banging on a trash can or I am. And he's just making the moral decision to not listen to the trash can being banged on. I've been that's what gray is saying. Is Carlos Correa needs to stop. He was actually coming out looking. Good on this. And he's done a full one. Eighty Mike I realize most of them were cheating but if L. to a was not cheating and I think he mentioned two other guys that we don't know all the facts that it is important to get out there that I'll to wouldn't partake understand what you're saying to God's but you can't trust these people it's like you telling the truth and you have earned all the skepticism that we believe at every turn. You're not telling the truth like I don't have a cray is not saying. Hey none of us did it. He saying most of us did it but there is one guy who didn't do it. I I actually find that believable but students okay. It's baseball though. Let's just say and we have to suspend disbelief for this. Let's say they weren't banging on trash cans or if they were altuve as tuning it up or be is. He's he's hitting when people are on base. I'm not saying absolutely benefiting from other people cheating. I'm not saying he himself isn't regarding what they're doing. I'm not saying he wasn't aided a mud saying he didn't benefit up saying if he didn't take it it it's important for someone that but he's hitting directly indirectly. He didn't stop it and he deserves criticism for that. He didn't stop it as a team leader. One of the best players in baseball but what grade is saying is he didn't do it but he's batting runners at our cheating okay again. He did. Stop Ronan circles. Here are some of the point out that L. to did not do it and he's not it's not important the astros though but they need to accept that they're not going to be the victims of this which they have not accepted yet because they still somehow think that they're the aggrieved here and they're clearly not. They're not sorry that people don't like you anymore. Sorry that people aren't sucking up to you anymore. Sorry that everybody hates you now. But you did this to yourself. I guess it can be victims if someone gets legitimately hurt which is an absolute chance. Now because they botched this from the get-go and other players are gonNA take this into their own hands. Why because that's baseball? They've been taken into their own hands since game was created. I also find a mighty convenient and now everybody's buck enough for Jose. Altuve like wait a second the guy won the MVP. He didn't do it. He's the one guy that was standing on his own and say. I'M GONNA play the game the right way and clubhouse full of cheaters. We've got the one guy who's disturbing example of not cheating but also money..

I was like i don't know i'm like you don't really hear about guys who are like super a good super good careers except really judge lately that began pulled up at twenty four twenty five for pete alonzo's having that judge asked rookie year hitting fittings fortieth home run the other night help carry them to a play-offs man because i remember the last time we were on this. We were talking about the mets kind of saying what the hell of a method doing and we sit here. I mean if we were here week ago like last week i would be saying the mets play off. They were super hot. There were like fourteen fifteen last week. Yeah they're cooling off but i mean it definitely made up. Some great did make some grants funny because last time we were on the show we were like what are the mets do stroman we're doing. We're like a guest. I think they have a chance tober and we're just just laughing. Although it's a silly joke and now the mets have a real shot again. That wildcard spot a second wildcard spot. It's gonna be interesting to see but i think it's tough when you're the guy that you really need to lead leisure team as a rookie. I like that that's so tough yeah. They'd just lost macneil. Macneil went on the <hes>. It's gonna be tough yeah. I mean he's doing in a real great job he wanted like we said he's kinda older. I think he's doing a real good job with like this leadership role but it's kind of tough when it aside from the pitchers the the leader of this team i i would say conforto her the pita lonzo yeah. I'd agree that guy excessiveness because he's not in the lions been hurt. I mean you you put a guy like that at least on the young guys if somebody up to more somebody who's been there before but these guys really haven't been there and and if you think about it though a bunch of guys on the mets that were either like like like veteran guys feel like aren't like playing super weller. They're getting her like robbie casinos stuff like that or they don't play every day like todd frazier but the guy is that kind of dupleix day or first year mets players at least wilson rama's yeah. Judy davis a. p. alonzo really <music> except for like every day. Guys conforto. I feel like is had resigned. Yes but it's rosario of everyday guys really play. You know coming back. It's only really conforto and i feel like the rookies have ruined a real good job of stepping. I mean even even <hes> mcneil and he's kind of an you know the guy to. They really stepped up this year so i think that's the big thing for the mets. It wasn't the guys who they brought in. It was how they're they're like. Newer guys or org. I didn't really hear about before are actually playing this year. Even mcneil to like me neo came up last year again like an older rookie babysit over three hundred men. They were all. You're saying we got this mcneil. He's pretty old right yeah twenty six on the oldest. I'm not sure exact ages but yeah i. I think they're doing a i think. One of the mets did do is that they waited. Wait if these guys like super mature and like they kind of kind of act like they've been in the league for more than the justice here. I mean it's kind of interesting to the mets amer. They drafted somebody. He's like almost twenty year old high school kid coming out of high school so i mean maybe that's their philosophy that doc this guy four or five years in the mind forty years. Maybe the miners will come up when he's twenty four. They love the kids who get held back. They love their favorite. What's your s._a._t. Score it's like twelve. We're drafting. You accept the highschool celtic so they ship them up so i know you are good s._a._t. Score you finish in four years. Are you going to seattle or whatever but <hes> yeah. I'm actually still a super surprise with them. That's n._p._r.'s lonzo. I think yeah i think he he needs. I think he's got a lot of credit for rejoin but i feel like it's a lot of individual credit but i think he's he's like it's crazy to say that he's kind of like glue this team. I would say as the glue guys it's crazy. How like a rookie like that by really do think he is but i do. I do think p lonzo with all due respect. There's yeah i think he over. He overshadowed tat tease junior league rookie of the year. I know tease out of the year now but i mean that can have phenomenal phenomenal year as well. I think if like any of us in like over three hundred twenty something like i think the thing is with fernando totti's junior if you ask me. She's she's just so cool. I think every kid wants to be fernando time these junior i it's not that it's taking shots at peter lonzo b.'s people onto your i'm jay this crash your office job. He gets a good. He's like you look void like you guys love. Him could just a regular dude. <hes> here's a regular dude alonzo so that can smash the crap out of a baseball but fernando tozzi <unk> is twenty years old from fly balls. I remember like secular yeah second. Be jason kam kamala guys making incredible play's that's short. He's got the hair. He's got the sunglasses. He's a cool dude but a i thought he was rookie of the year you're obviously he got hurt and my prediction from before the year was fernando tozzi sooner. I'm a little upset that i think not going to happen because a strong second because he if you play the the full year i really do think got. He got hurt once before yeah. That's true but i think if alonzo it's fifty. It doesn't matter can't if if alonzo didn't win give year. I think the like isn't isn't the mets has ingo season record. I think it's forty seven. I'm not sure i'm pretty sure i'll i'll pass it then. If it's forty forty four and earned i'm bridget's angels record is forty seven trout at forty two nats and that brings us to the next guy. We have to talk about mike trout route. The guys absolutely unreal <hes> he's the m._v._p. Of this season <hes> no no doubt about it. I mean he's trying to just running circles around his own numbers. I mean it's when you compare him to make his career high for it to him run crazy. He's got a better season this year than he'd probably ever going to be as best season and it's and it's crazy because i remember like in the beginning of the year. A few people were texting me saying like it was like it was like the fourth day of the season and like trout having an off of year. Now's like there was. There's so many things wrong with that sense because i saw even of. Let's say it was later in the year like right now and mike char actually was having an off off year trout off still pry better than like ninety five percent of the m._l._b. Off years still he's still going to start in the all star giving speeding maybe to ninety yeah yeah. I'm and maybe like thirty. Five home runs off your for mitrokhin. Exactly there is no such thing for this guy. He's absolutely absurd at i mean he's having one of his best tisco season yet. There's no down my mind he would've m._v._p. For next season just just based on how good this season was he. I think he's lock. I don't see a real competitor. Now can leak. I mean i do think bregman is a is a good second. I'm going to be honest. I really i really was rooting rooting for bregman. I'm a huge trout guy. Of course you know i do love. Bregman have bregman guys on the podcast was rooting for him but i don't no i don't think he didn't catch trout but you know what bregman you competing for another ring man and bregman your beast and we love you out of your love you long islanders. Love love bregman another guy. You're talking about appreciative another some crazy as a kunia man and i'd like it just bothers me because if i yell itch and bellinger weren't having the crazies like right under three hundred thirty five home runs and he stolen thirty basis do but it's it's the same thing with bregman like if it wasn't trout always first or second except for the last year i think he was fourth in the all star going like bregman would it would it's bregman endeavors right now two and three that that's insane to make the all star team. I know he's corey would like to have those two guys guys like you would have been. It would have been so cool seeing those guys battle it out for the m._p. But it just it's kind of tough being american league when you have trout yet. It's take always chasing lebron man the right to say. It's almost like being like a western conference basketball before this year the you always chasing the warriors might trout it essentially the warriors that makes sense. Hey got the point across yeah. I mean he's having a filthy year. I i need a sea trout a little bit of a tough credit calm because he's like my favorite play. I need to see not just a playoff berth but win. A playoff series series not even a wildcard game l. Let's see like how you can do. I mean like i remember like that. The whole thing iran man the near on finally actually against the in two thousand nine men that you need one of those sears performances where it just puts it all does get on if he doesn't wanna world series because the guys around him are too good all right but like you need to see producing the postseason put the thing is also. I will give chart a little bit of a credit here. They're nine guys batting. You're not even pitching as unless you're otani. Bush has not really pitching over a year. It's not it is not a one man cannot takeover. No it's not because if you want any other sport of basketball just give on the basketball every possession and let him doing. You can't look of the charters four at bats game. Maybe five yeah and the guy can't do anything if if the leftfielder makes an hour <hes> can't do anything if there's a bad throwing indian field i feel like that's kind of what makes below like solich cool and like how we can consider trout one of the probably the greatest of like this probably the.

"Of the time now and do you know mike trout have you ever met my trout i've never met my trout all right so when he comes out of the box is he kind of looks in your general direction but he's just kinda it's sort of like you're just the background around and he's he's not looking to acknowledge you and you're not looking all jim you're focused on you're catcher right i've noticed that from him the first thing that i do feel like you usually looks at me and maybe get a little nod i think he might just do that everyone yeah when he the first the the first batter the game he like he goes i mean what he says heidi umpiring taps the catcher with his with his bat and then he so then he looks at you to like he's gonna introduce himself to the home environment yeah i think so you know he's just like hello i'm the best player that walks you're nice to meet you see i'm gonna go for for today at that point when when he comes in for for end just generally you know he's mike trout is there a psychological element element to it where you're thinking maybe even that you have to get away from you regular game plan just because whatever you've done against him doesn't worker there's some sort of just intimidation component that comes into it yeah definitely you know you you're big league pitcher you feel confident but there's always guys that's a you know i don't wanna intimidates not quite the quite the right word but that you know you just feel at eight disadvantage right off the bat right because of who he is and and what he's done against you in the past paso in in you just automatically feel like you're margin for error so small because i mean he just hammers everything you know so right off the bat you're like man okay of basically throwing the kitchen sink already what can i change this at that maybe at least get off the beryl i mean yeah he only single those first two at bats so technically 'em kept the ball in the yard and he didn't do any damage but at the end the day might trout on first he could still bags and then you know you got pool holes in upton behind on so you don't want a fast sky on base so obviously you wanna keep mosque so yeah there's a lot swimming through remind there at the end the day when he got the best you know best baseball player standing in the box you know with a lot of success in the past against you yeah i'm not sure that there's anything in my job that feels as hard as facing like the like if i had to go up against the very best in the world in like a head to head matchup at my job like that i don't have any equivalent to that and so i i probably would emotionally shut down and in fact a lot of the questions that i'm probably gonna ask about a lot of these plate appearances is how did you not emotionally shutdown it is incredible dummy how when a strike needs to be thrown you're up there on the middle of the on the on the mound in middle of everything and you throw a strike and i don't quite know how you do that 'cause i i couldn't do that but i also don't quite know how you go up against might trout in i mean you know your i imagine that to be a professional athlete takes a great deal of confidence and a great deal of self confidence any ability to convince yourself that you know you're you know you really are one of the best in the world and you can get anybody out at any given time end there is a little bit of of a self reinforcement there and there's a lot of that's true and then there's probably a little bit of self deception when you need it and you just when you're looking at mike trout there's no self deception possible you know that mike trout is you know better than you like i don't know how you feel with that yeah well it's good that will now you got me all nervous man.

"Wow. Plays hard. He plays with passion. He has a vicious smile. You know, he smiles, but he's trying to destroy. Pretty good. Child leaps up. Trout's I bought full seasons. He finished runner up three times and won the American League MVP award in two thousand fourteen and two thousand sixteen. He stays healthy and he continue at this pace. He's going to be the greatest player to play this game. Athletically, push shore about historical comparisons with you guys in your neighborhood or Ted Williams in Babe, Ruth and Lou Gehrig. How do you feel about that? You know, it's, it makes you feel great. People compare. You know, you always going to be the next Babe, Ruth disguising the next time. Great to be in the same conversation. That's remarkable. It's pretty crazy. For all of his success. Every off season trout returns home to spend the winter in millville even after signing a one hundred and forty four point five million dollar contract. He lived in the basement of his parents home. Then in two thousand sixteen he bought his own place across town. It looks fishing, Delaware Bay's. Here he likes hunting everything that he likes to do. Other than baseball is here. He also likes this Mr. Mike trout on the phone with a huge, a huge weather nerd, whether just like I am and the rest of us out there having a winter storm come through. And Mike, you guys got a quiet down by down and you call somebody. I'm like, who is it calling? Tell us the latest. She got their millville. It's been crazy for sure. Obviously up all night. You know, up every hour, you know, checking, we probably. We probably the roads are terrible. No, it's awesome love. When we're home in the off season, my phone is blowing up with weather maps and pictures, and all this is going to be the big one. The baseball season trout keeps the angels in their fans informed. It's warmer in jersey. It's going to smell scorching the chance of rain. These are meteorologist. There's no doubt if we see rain coming into a city Worrell plane. We go check with Mike, hey, how's it? Look? We're gonna be able to take BP tomorrow or what's going on. And he's usually right on the money, no snow after baseball. I think he just knows this and you know, I enjoy weather lot. So it's maybe I'll do. And it was home a New Jersey where undescended ninth, two thousand seventeen Trump married his high school sweetheart. The best day of my life. Yes, walked down the aisle is great. Tell me what you saw when she walked on the. A lot of. Oh, man. Unbelievable. When they wanted to be a swear, they know it's very. It was a magical day in Mexico night. And it's not so icing on the cake. A month after getting married trout's hometown team was in the NFL playoffs. Have you do is watch football on Sunday and you're seeing Mike, do something the eagles game and get a football, and it was like, all right on cool. I mean, I see this guy on during the season need to see him on Sundays. Trout, followed the eagles all the way to the Super Bowl, taking twelve people from millville including his barber Christian thought the NFC championship game was the best game. But saying, obviously the Tom Brady is. The ultimate. That was all. Everywhere. Can't imagine what it felt like as a player, you know you reflect as in like how this would feel as you know, being on baseball win the World Series. The way I fell as fan. I think it'd be pretty special to feel it as a player too. But trout hasn't come close. Now in his seventh season, his only one playoff appearance in two thousand fourteen the angels are swept by the royals. Trout had one hit in twelve advance. He's the best all round player in the game, but he's not as famous as our in judge right now who've played a year and a half. And the only way that that gets corrected is if the angels get to the World Series or deep into the playoffs. And you can't guarantee that in baseball. I think my trout could raise his profile tomorrow if he decided that he wanted to engage a little more fully, give up some more of his free time. And that's his choice. I know there's a lot of people that would like to see the commercialization of Mike on a much grander scale. That's not what he's about.

"Part of the program for this week they'll be back on. Monday as, well with my regular crew. We'll, be let's hear from Mike trout And baseball, is saying we need to hear more from Mike travel remember we talked about it yesterday and the comments by the Commissioner I was surprised by these. Comments rob Manfred he said Mike's. Are great great player a really nice person but, he's made certain decisions about what he wants to do. And what he doesn't want to do and how he, wants to. Spend his free time and now he doesn't want to that's up to him if he wants to engage. It'd be more active in. That area being marketing himself I think we could help him make his brand really really. Big but, he asked to make a decision that he's prepared to engage in. That area takes time and effort here's travel Iraqi talk guys. I do, as much as I can Baseball season so You and Erin. Hitting home, runs I mean you think this is, nice Promotes You, know I think Like I said before we, can express herself know obviously not just playing baseball. During the, game dugout This anywhere I was thinking about this whole thing about that might trout needs to. Market himself more Manfred. Said player marketing requires one thing for sure the player you cannot market a. Player passively you need people doing gauge with those to whom you are trying to market in order to have. Effective marketing we are very interested in having our players more engaged and having higher profile players in helping our players develop their, individual brand but that involves the player being. Actively engaged what exactly does rob Manfred want Mike trout to? Do that he's. Not doing I. Don't know I would be interested to ask rob Manfred like this whole idea, marketing yourself What what does that mean commercials I mean I've seen Mike trout. In some commercials I as he turned down commercials possibly would that make that much of a difference interviews I think he does, interviews that he taught people cover the angels. I've never heard him say that Mike trout doesn't talk to? Them he was. Willing to do. An endgame interview while he was walking around centerfield the other night on FOX I don't know that it's. My Mike trout's fault that was? A story that his what they?.

"We it gets in our cross has we. Ripped them apart that's always, the way we've been doing thing we have never under show. Never had a bad word to say about millville Mike trout how could he is, one of the. Class. Acts. Of all prime professional, sports history wind him up. Amazing yeah and the other hand rob Manfred the Commissioner. Baseball, this point in time he's been. There about three years nine take three or four years now I've never had an opinion about. Nine. Kind of just rip bud ceiling that. Senile old fart right. But, I never went. After rob Manfred I have no opinion yeah hill this. Week now I have an opinion of and it's extremely negative and the reason it's so negative is because this guy stupidly decided to blame, Mike trout. For not being a better Representative of baseball better he does market. Himself well what's behind it is how are we supposed to maximize what we can, get out of. Might. Trout's. Marketability when he doesn't, really want to engage in. All that stop that's what he's saying he's saying boy. Mike. Trout for the sport now being. More popular our best player doesn't really want to market himself which by the way isn't even. Really. True no Mike does what plenty bite. Does plant he did. Subway. So this dummy. This dummy Manfred comes out at the DM all star. Game the very same day the trout hits a home run in the all star game this guy's ripping might trap This towels. You're. I, wanna read you, two statements one by trout and one by the angels organization right and these statements to me. Way. Too polite way too polite you wanna hear what. A great guy might. Trout, his he gets dimed out they make a big issue out of him having another amazing season another MVP year and they say he's a problem magin that here's the. Statement Trump puts out. Yesterday I, received, lots of questions about Commissioner. Manfred recent statement I, am not a petty guy would really encourage everyone, to just move forward everything is cool between. The, Commissioner in myself end of story I. Am ready to. Just play some baseball Lassie state yes he's he's basically saying give the guy. A break and the. Angel stood by angels camp as much as I love Mike. I'm not following his advice Not moving forward and, is not. The, end of the story all right because my statement would be this is a quick, one? For the Commissioner kiss my ass that's what my statement Patty, kiss my ass I am a petty guy I would. Encourage no one to. Move forward nothing is cool between me and the Commissioner this is not the end, of the story, and I am not prepared to play baseball until I got a. Full apology by that stuff shirt jackass rob Manfred that's. My statement with kiss my ass Keith Olbermann who's a bit of a nut. Said it really perfectly this is how Mike trout best promotes. Baseball top five all time greatness an endless media cooperation. In. Ten, minutes I could, write a promo which he mocks how boring is right and it could be it might trout. Would. Do it in an hour Now the key I'm thinking of change Now let me be with the angel said because Al this also I found to be too. Kind all Dow they made it clear, they? Didn't, appreciate what the Commissioner. Today right they this is their state Mike trout is an exceptional embassador for the. Game combined with his talent is solid character creates a perfect role..

"One of the nicest guys you'll ever and most talented guys you've ever seen but don't you see that with mike trout that i don't think trout wants to be i think he just he's trying to keep his the best he wants to be himself but we want him to be bigger than the sport right yeah and i don't think he embraces that now i you know for what he does in the way he carries himself i think it's phenomenal for what how he does it because he could if he wanted to but somehow the upbringing the parents whatever the is environment was always so special to him than he respected that you know it in nineteen sixty six i was in carolina league and they asked me about what i wanted to do and i said well i talked about the fear of failure in nineteen sixty six but it wasn't failing myself it was failing all of those people back home all those people that believe meal those people have picked up a newspaper you know i couldn't imagine something happening i did something in my parents had to face you know and and i talked about that and i just think that mike trout is to me the pitta me of what baseball players are i mean it's just so humble and so great and so tell it he hits the ball ducks his head he runs and he doesn't try to show anybody up and and we're blessed with a lot of great talent i mean we we're seeing that fun stuff last night at the at the at the home run derby and people said did you ever have a homerun derby i said yeah every game everybody practiced everybody bracket and so here here we are cubs right nineteen sixty five was my high school i last year the number of the scout for the chicago cubs name was billy caps and he loved me he loved me he wanted me so badly and he brought a is supervisor down i went one for four and he's say overstay over we'd just got back from senior trip stay over he said i can't so the next time went four four with two doubles two home runs and the cubs sighted they dried draft me in the third round ivan but i'm going to jump out the when window i them but think about it i mean not to be hundley because they moved me up quickly i could have been you know i could have been twenty two or twenty three by the time i got in the major league we would have been patient mr bench we we needed us randy hundley was underrated though he was voting in grody did he teach you to put your hand behind your back now i just i broke my thumb twice with a foul outs yeah and i'm thinking you know this is stupid i got round globe and it's hard to miss that thumb i don't know if there's some writer it's hard to miss that and i broke it twice and i said this is stupid and i saw randy had caught like one hundred sixty games and he was using it so when i got there i just took my hand down and stuck it out of the way and i never had another broken bone on my right hand it was but it was just something i had to do and i have a book called catch every ball how to handle life's pitches and i kid people come up and say my kid wants to be a catcher what i tell them catch every bolt if you learned to catch every ball the same thing in life but catching every ball all of a sudden man this guy can really catch him or this lady can really catch did you have knuckles that i'm trying to think who you got caught we had a guy named l a brigade pruitt gatewood and aaa in nineteen sixty seven and he was a journeyman and he was on the way out so he said he'd throw the knuckleball.

"Listen farright last segment the day today here in for those of you who are wondering why i'm like pointing out the title of this show today and saying it doesn't say l west up there because it used to say that they're about a segment ago and then between these i renamed the episode so it says it doesn't say it says mike trout just mike trout because i was my trout rant right there so yeah mike trout poor guy he i hope he has a i know he has a pretty girlfriend that's fine i know i don't really care anyways but nice house that actually do care about hopefully has some comfortable living arrangements because you're forty one and forty one year ten and a half games back of the of the astros who tanked for two and a half years while you were good like playing the top baseball of your life when you first this i mean so you are still now because you're obviously mike i'm talking straight to mike shot right by the white guys this is just for me and mike mike sorry you're just the policy is for you to you from the from the angels for disappointing you so much and allowing team and your own division to win the world series before you guys and to and for them not not spending money wisely and giving j wilson a crazy steal and for giving pools too much money because he's getting old and knowing that has a of fasciitis problem and yes i chris young and signing we'll just enough to actually just ups and he's gotten better but yet and thinking that gave richards could be your your ace yeah he looks grays look and pitcher looking big big guy got a great slider but this nope nope and then you didn't you who don't have any buddy they don't have anybody they have their guys the giants they went out and got cueto they went out and got some marga hasn't really worked out yet just give me an example from what does you can do but the astros made it work for lander the astros wouldn't found charlie morton turned him into a gray starter make move make a move make a move do something that's op season signed somebody pitching pitching pitching pitching pitching pitching even though i know tom lost last time for two three four two to win that game yeah they probably should because then whether they're hitters on strike or they a team they're baseball is a grind people as abba salute grind it's just the season is so long number one you're always together you're on a airplane back and forth throughout the so you think that the pitchers when hitters finally hit and they lose seven to five or or lose ninety eight or something like that the hitters don't get upset or they don't feel it at all then it goes back and forth the pitcher anybody a pitches nice five and a third innings of the two one run ball whatever it was to run doll in the hitters can't bounce back that's it's inspiring baseball i mean i know i know what giants fan not trying to be giants fan no i'm telling you disclaimer but missing sample is happening to giants yesterday they even lost i only talk giants losses that much but they lost yesterday however they were down in that game twice before they took the lead twice and then obviously blew it couldn't come back in the bottom of the ninth inning but we only have one inning it's tough i understand but the fact that they had fight a team has shown fight team had injury issue teams had all this stuff that happen to them with their ace of their staff going down and and multiple injuries shoes happening a guy at an appendix tear guy got slid into and and busted busted his finger on josh l please leg because he has slid into wrong had a weird concussion because he slid into slu into a side wall on the side of the field flu crazy fluky weird injuries and they're still there two games over five hundred they're four and a half back in the west yeah they wouldn't be back in the american league was meant that because it's a little different comparison but they shone fight they have fight they are could mesh together as a team they have fight they come back and games the.

"To tell my children about him is that he likes the weather i've been around trout i've spoken with trout found him actually really engaging when he was talking about shohei otani but i've kind of seen up close how tough it is to bring out more from trout until i'm interested in he can tell us about your efforts behind the scene to kind of make trout into the superstar that he should be i mean i i love my drought drought is awesome he's amazing everything that those of us who love the game know that he is and what sparks my little mini thread last week wasn't really in hope it didn't come across his picking on mike trout in it was really pointing out the kind of systemic issues the get in the way of marketing him or or anybody else in and it was really responding to this notion that you see just as narrative that his form that this this quote unquote mlb needs the markets players better which for people like me who are on the inside is like nails on a chalkboard it's along the lines of saying baseball's dying or or people who say the mlb it just you know we we we reacted visceral way because again we were on the inside and we were doing it and we know all the things that that then in the way so i i would say you know a couple of things one and you know lindsey alluded to this you know the player has to have nachos the great personality but also a willingness to discipline a lot of these things and again this is not to pick on my trial will experience this with countless star players but you know you can have all sorts of opportunities to to do either you know national advertisers sponsors to do media interviews to do extensive profiles to do magazine things shoots and these opportunities do come along and people inside him will be headquarters make those opportunities happen and very often in sometimes the player just doesn't want to do them sometimes the the schedule and reality of baseball simply doesn't allow you know a mocking to sit here and say that football and basketball players have an easy but they do have many more office in between their games than than baseball players do of baseball really is a grind it's every single day and it's not just the three hours of the game is you know if you know for an average seven pm game players are getting to the ballpark around one or two they have their routine of stretching and working out there they aren't talking to media there's gonna be writers before and after games and you know they'll have an often maybe every two three weeks and on that one day they want arrest you know or they wanna do whatever else interest them and so very often in some like myself would come up with for two days that might qualify under that banner of quote unquote marketing players and for whatever reason in it's very difficult to pull those things offering the season yeah and i've talked to chat to and i was asking him about him as opposed to ask him about someone else and so i had to work pretty hard to find a line that i could quote that was actually worth quoting and not necessarily the most attention seeking type but even if you are in there are players out there who are maybe a little fleshier in some ways or seek that kind of publicity in a way that doesn't and even they at this point in the post cheater post a rudder era there really aren't any baseball players who are national figures in the way that the biggest stars in other sports are and that's not just because of trout's personality or any other one guy's personality it seems like it's because of some larger obstacles that have to do with the sport itself and the way it's fandom is organized so can you talk a little bit about just some.

"Ria mike trout is to for his last nineteen are we worried about mike trout is mike trout gonna need to spend some time at salt lake city to get his bat straight and what would have thoughts a rare slumped from mike trout i i think angels are earned not too early to my child you know things they have spirit about i i don't think this mini slump for my child is particularly disconcerting especially since they're gonna go off the plate safeco field where he is traditionally hit very well so you know it's probably just a timing thing for for trial he has his way of of guiding himself out of these these little downturns in becoming his normal and ep self so i suspect that will happen soon also isn't as you knew you knew his reputation come in your second year on the beat right so you knew his reputation coming into that i'm just curious like washing him night after night like what stands out because he's not a guy who necessarily a given night you would know is the greatest player in the game right it doesn't like he's not like in your face about it like an aaron judge might be you know hitting a monstrous homerun on a given night mike trout is a little more subtle in how he gets to his numbers where it's just that dog consistency night after night after night so i'm just curious from your perspective have covered him for a year plus now what has been like to see him on a daily basis yeah i agree that what he does not necessarily flashy i mean i think one of his biggest drinks is just the fact that he's on base of off in a means you know sometimes you look up and of course he's already on base go to the goal.

"In the history of the game and my troud is right up there with him with them getting his one thousand hit on his twenty six th birthday and it won't be the lead story because it's not three thousand heads it's not five hundred home runs but i think it speaks to a larger point the fact that price are gosh i keep getting their names wrong because they're broke so good the mike trout is so great and he's not going to be the lead story because he plays for the angels in these acquired dude and he just goes about his business news heard for part of the year and he doesn't do anything particularly interesting other than just be great of baseball and is that speak more to my troud urged that speak to the fact that we are of football culture of basketball culture a look at me culture in a guy in my trout is not a look at miyagi whereas price harper is and we talk about price harper more and he's great too but might trout somehow gets swept under the robbery's off the radar and to me that's crazy i feel like in an era not too long ago when i was growing up as a baseball fan i i loved the yankees believe it or not and i'm sure you can believe it i feel like did a we had so send maguire of course and all the home run chases as tainted his those may be in retrospect but i feel like baseball was so much more in the public consciousness when the yankees were winning all those games in like 1998 specifically and in the mariners a few years later we talk about it all the time it looks like the dodgers could win a hundred and seventeen games this year and we kind of just mention in passing and that's where we're at with baseball and i think he's just because we're in a different culture now we care more about instant gratification that we get with.
