Is Homefield Advantage Dead?

"WANNA start here eight and I think this allows us to get in week fifteen you mailed me some stats last week And now we saw again today. Road teams were nine and six against the spread. The road teams won all nine of those games outright for the season road teams against the spread. One twenty five ninety three three and five there thirty two games over five hundred while home favorites Through fifteen weeks or fifty seven eighty one in five twenty four games. That's amazing right there. And we have had over and over again these double digit losses. We just had it today again with San Francisco cousin. Sal I ask you this homefield advantage dead. It might be there might be. I think you said you said it in basketball you were saying was dead. It's funny yesterday on text exchange. But yeah if you're looking through your pools and you have to pick sixteen games a week if there are no bison. You're going six and ten every week it's because you're taking home favorites. I know I know it's hard hard. I know when the better team is laying six at home. It's hard to not circle the left side but stay away. It's very bizarre an extremely bizarre week. The raiders was ending that Falcons ending the Vikings first half cost people money the way that ended obviously the Redskins Eagles. That might have been the worst ending if you had if you had the redskins the plus points Or if you're going against Cooper cop in your honesty semi funky you hold. That thought we were talking about that. I think what's interesting to me. I I remember I wrote about this at the end of last decade ironic. I think Oh eight zero nine I wrote about this trend with with the NFL where it didn't see my homefield matter the way it did and then we had settled into this eight nine year run. We're homefield still mattered. But not like a date when we were growing up where it was like. If you went into somebody else's house also really hard to win and then you get to this year and I think we're seeing it with basketball to serves texting boat this weekend. I think there's three reasons I think the first reason is the secondary market. And the fact that you just don't have stadiums anymore words just completely fans for the home team yet so it it always seems to be more splintered than it used to be. The tickets have gotten way more expensive so I think that's that's Priced out some of the crazies. You know like some of the friends wrens. You had grown up some of the friends that I had back in Boston. It's just harder for them to for tickets and then I think the third thing. There's been so much talk about civility ability at games and you know fan behaviors. Just been a huge spotlight on how people behave and what they're allowed to do and yell. Oh and all that stuff and the crowds just seem Tamer and we saw today with the raiders. Blew a game late to Jacksonville Euro and this was the last I Oklahoma Game. It was on those on that. They're not gonNA lose their last home game and frigging g Menchu when right down the field out and then we saw it again today with Buffalo. It's like Ow Josh. Challenge when push comes to Shove Jiaxuan is not GonNa be able to get points in Pittsburgh. The crowd will take him out of it their defense no Josh Allen right down and scored. I don't know who has the great home field advantage anymore. So we'll Josh Allen didn't have a great game no thirteen completions. That was just an. I'm sorry I Pittsburgh Burke might still make the playoffs and I pray that they do because I have. They're the only team I could see betting against in that first round like I have a feeling on any other first round match unless Pittsburgh goes to Kansas City. I mean they've they've got in the last five games in which the supposedly hot they scored fifteen points a game. It's just Mike. Tomlin did as much much as he could. He can't do what you can do for this offense. You can't fake punt from his own twenty eight every week. I'm sorry but I think you're right. I think it's all the things you said. I also I think. Road teams coaches management has figured out the exact amount of time a team should spend in the opposing city. You know it's easier to travel now all that kind of stuff so there's not that much The jet lag isn't as big a concern. But you're right. We used to see division winners at seven and one eight eight. No now aside unless you like the packers this cowboys eagles four and three Kansas City foreign three at home like even the really good teams. You know Houston only five and two at home. Buffalo's GonNa make the playoffs only four and three at home i. I don't know what the reason is but trust us. These home teams are not. They're not better than they were five ten years ago. Yeah and I think that Tennessee Games are good example right. Yep didn't really seem like it mattered. Where that game was played and I don't think it's GonNa Matter Week? Seventeen either right now. The crowd was was good. They were into it but it wasn't like wasn't like the Shawn Watson was going to be affected by the crowd. We left out another reason that I think matters maybe Charles back to our childhoods. But you know the headsets the head facing the helmets and the and the QB being able to hear the offensive coordinator being able to move faster and the the even somebody like trubisky you know they were in that game that I know the packers won by eight. And if he didn't see the game you just assume The packers they were up double digit second half but the bears were lingering in that game and there were a couple of moments era when it seemed like they had a chance maybe to force overtime and I didn't think h Bisky who I don't think is good then look scared but he. He certainly wasn't rattled by playing in Lambo. So I stopped when when you know the we've been doing million dollar pegs you and I have been. We've been betting all season. I've really stopped looking at home field. They're very very few times. Do I say to myself. Oh my God that teams home. I really really love having the home team here even even tonight I bet on Buffalo. Hello at Pittsburgh. And as you said Josh Allen wasn't great but they were still able to move the ball and they needed to and their defense certainly traveled. It didn't seem to matter to them where they were playing. And I just think we throw homefield out. I don't know where it really matters anymore. Well if we go into the playoffs saying I just can't see so and so winning at ax EXC. There's not that many of those anymore right right. Then probably win their game at home and you know the niners or or or award seahawks over wax or they'll have a by but you know those some of those row teams near Green Bay will probably win at home but you can't say unless it's dot co dot com is going to Kansas City. I can't really say Buffalo. There's no way they're winning in Houston right or anything like that especially when you get to the one to three seeds when they match up so do you think is Seattle place that you feel like homefield battered team in the playoffs That's probably top three but not as much Chisato did eight years ago when Tony Romo had to go there or something like that. I don't think it's slow because think about what are they foreign to Yeah about about their last couple of games whether seven and one on the road I mean it is scary arose team right there. Last couple of games Minnesota went in there and put thirty autumn atom. Yep and then the game before that James Put thirty four on them in that game went to overtime I don't know I I wanted to start. The season isn't yeah. It's not the

New England Patriots release Antonio Brown

"I Antonio brown owner is out of the NFL and one of our favorite guys do I have on the show. is of course Steven A. Smith and let's see here what Stephen a Smith has to say about the latest saga. Antonio brown being released from the New England Patriots in the race for the top spot yeah do you expect to see Antonio brown in the NFL again no I do not obviously one will look at his talent. and one would say obviously with the NFL with their bottom line tendencies will want somebody like him and they're willing to tolerate somebody like him. my response to that would be although it is absolutely correct that there are people who's done who've done far worse than Antonio brown that managed to be in the National Football League I would bring up the name calling captain if only for this reason man they talk about Colin Kaepernick every day on their show every day they talk about him it's unbelievable his decision to kneel and in owners eyes compromise the bottom line they wanted to send the message to discourage others from following him in the future being pioneers in certain movements Antonio brown directly attacked Robbie craft how do you think that scull flow with the other thirty one owners in the National Football League I mean if they take bottom line issues personally as it pertains to dollars what do you think they're going to make of personal attacks aimed in the direction of an owner yeah not gonna like it ain't fly with that that's right I said I could like it but Stephen says Dane fly with that let's get to the personal side this man Antonio brown decides that what he wants to do all allegedly is the text messages that he sent out about the the the the person accusing it would you know the sex the second charge against them he said thou pictures of her children in the meantime he also made sure to talk about big band yesterday he talked about Robert Kraft yesterday he talked about Shannon shop yesterday okay he brought up these folks names how do you think that's gonna fly in the locker room he's call it Ryan clock a sellout he's attacked ju ju Smith Shuster how do you think that's going to flow he set up the and went after my Tomblin I am sorry to Mike Tomlin under the bus how do you think that's going to flow this man I've given credit for this he clearly doesn't discriminate he's attacked everybody. I don't. tech teammate tax contemporaries he has pulled no punches okay and he has shown that he can absolutely positively not be trust that I will get I won't even get into this what does great article we have you take into account having a tank filled the Parana's but that's all. and having a personal valet and and and and all you know personal staff to give up what this man has earned all right here's how much she's earned answer web around how much as Antonio brown earned in his NFL career all at all. in millions Bender

NFL Week 2 Monday Night Football

"I thought Mason Rudolph all good it from what I saw just looking at the numbers this morning in the first half half with primarily big Ben I know he departed at about the two or three minute mark of the second quarter or with a two or three two or three minutes remaining in the second quarter rather but you look at the first first half steelers four point three yards per play forty two percent success rate with Big Ben in the second half five point nine yards per play fifty two percent success rate with Mason Rudolph off. He looked pretty capable. There's a reason they moved dobbs so I think you know things. Look a little better for the steelers offensively. The problem album is Mike. Tomlin's defense fell apart in the second half gave up eight point eight yards per play in the second half once. Big Ben goes out right. It's on you Mike Tomlin. It's on your defense inst- to step up and shoulder that increased load instead they regressed right in the eight point eight yards per place in the second half doesn't include the the monstrous pass interference appearance. Call there on edmunds for additional thirty eight yards so steelers. This is kind of the fear we had. We kind of just assumed roomed. It said Hey lady on bell didn't play all of last year no Biggie they seem to make up for that but all of the losses on offense Mike check the offensive line coach. Now you're dealing with James Caan as well left with a knee injury. We'll talk to Dr Trial about that. One see what he says now. You're on the road traveling across the country face San Francisco. It's going to be interesting to see. It sounds like you'll be Mason Rudolph under center yeah very very interesting to see how some of these things kind of play themselves goes out and you always wonder how these teams rebound with some key faces that may or may not be there and of course the steelers staring down the barrel of that Owen to start. We'll see if they can get things corrected as you alluded to their trip on the road to San Francisco but as is the right of oddsmakers and better like you typically see overreactions in week two by the time you get to week three or starting to get a better sense of who some of these teams are and identify how these numbers need to be set figuring out for some of those situational edges so when we look at the look ahead lines for next week pay not a ton of overreaction in the market by any stretch you do have the packers on a look ahead number go for six and a half point favorite now to more than a touchdown touchdown chalk against the Denver Broncos who have to wipe themselves up off the deck knowing they let a glorious opportunity against Chicago bears. Get away from spot on Denver had their heart's ripped out. There obviously not going to have their early season altitude advantage here like they had a week ago. There's whispers within the locker room not all the players. Here's Love Vic Fangio's old school coaching style. If you start doing oh or you win a game like that and you're one and one suddenly players let that slide by but when you're in two you now you're an eight point underdog on the road. Let's see if they can overcome that once. Leflore script were off though for Green Bay and the Vikings woke up the packers offense was back to sucking again and you look into doubt just on the day four point nine yards per play for for the green offense the final three quarters the packers offense averaged three point two yards per play a forty percent success rate and Rogers had zero explosive passes fastest final three quarters so still some things to figure out offensively. They're for Green Bay came out with their hair on fire much much Dr Chagrin but that was kind of after the first quarter the the pace and the output we we kind of handicapped and projected there for the Green Green Bay offense yeah and they even gave were gifted at touchdown for the Minnesota Vikings when they turn the ball over to take that fourteen nothing lead out to twenty one but we're not gonNA cry over spilled. Milk will continue to look get some of the numbers for next week to massive point spreads. That'll remind you a lot more of college football than they will the national football league. I couldn't even tell you in an historical context when you're GONNA see two favorites favorites of this big magnitude pain look ahead number for the patriots thirteen points. Now I know Sam Darnold of course was factored into this look ahead number with him. Being out regardless of how the jets perform tonight against the Cleveland browns you're looking at the pats a seventeen and a half point favorite yes differing numbers on the look ahead. One shop had the look at as low as ten. They actually produced that before the Sam Darnold News obviously so you have patriots than Bennett. They've outscored their opponents now. Seventy seventy six to three you know Antonio Brown is a go. It looks like a real factor and it's not just Sam Darnold. That's going to be down again right. There's other guys that have some injury question question marks for the jets interesting see where this number goes right. I think there's going to be a lot of movement. Obviously it's not open everywhere right now but you know trevor sending in the jets pull off off an upset tonight or if they get blown out this number is going to head in different directions right. I think if the jets get blown out you're probably looking at closer to twenty if they somehow pull off the upset victory probably turning back down towards two touchdowns.

"Tony Gonzalez in the bar area Errington back time now for a big story. Let's move the Pittsburgh. steelers fell to the seahawks yesterday. After Ben Rothlisberger left the game with an injured elbow the team announced been will have surgery injury and we'll be out for a crushing blow to Mike Tomlin's hopes for this season which was supposed to be a bounce back year after missing the playoffs last year. This smells like the exact same scenario destruc- Andy Reid right before he got out of Philadelphia. They went four four and twelve. He was fired and needed a fresh life someplace else. That's where I think we're at with Mike Tomlin this smells like four and twelve and Mike Mike Tomlin to me. Despite Lavar Endorsement Mike Thomas the head coach a Atlanta Falcons next season. Oh man you go in there. Wow both not gonNA to do good. Wow look speaking of Andy Reid. This Mike Tomlin is only third in terms terms of winning percentage as active head coach behind that Andy Reid and Bill Belichick so should he be on a hot seat absolutely not not by resume never losing season season now by resume but will he be because of the conversation because the back of class is talking louder in front of the class that has actually paying attention. He will might be good for Mike Tomlin. Oh to he may want I've been cut before. It sounds good after you cut but not before. Oh you might land on your feet while my air in the first place this is this is unfortunate set of circumstances when you talk about Mike Tomlin woody suffer in terms of loss of talent for various reasons whether it's injury whether it's distraction or whether it's the one wanting to know their personal value and worth whatever it is no more killer bees out there in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh as we were saying and this is really going to undermine what he's done in terms of being a stabilizing force despite all of those personalities and issues shoes unfortunate. Maybe there's a silver lining but for me. He's not on a hot seat for the world at large on certain years. Some say that you know adversity doesn't bill bill character. It exposes it. I look at this Pittsburgh. steelers saying first of all. Mike Tomlin in general is usually on the hot seat. If you pay attention to Pittsburgh steelers news and a lot of times people look to to say well. Maybe he's not the coach his team one thing about the Pittsburgh steelers dealers that organization stands behind their their higher coaches. There's only been a handful of coaches that have coached there. I don't think that this organization is a knee jerk reaction organization that will say okay an implosion. That could possibly take place. I I don't I see them possibly being six to seven one team this year. I don't look at the Pittsburgh steelers organization saying in a rebuilding year. You lose your starting quarterback. We already know that the situation with with bell and with Antonio Tonio Brown the year before I think that this is more of an organization these are two organizations that win by the way are the ones that invest in the people that they bring in to lead the team and assist them and building that team personnel wise. I don't think he's GONNA lose his job over this. I don't think he ends up in Atlanta and they'll salvage the season but you'll look to see this team begin to build. They're putting pieces in place. The kid from Michigan that they brought in Devon Bush been very good or well but he's a rookie and he's young highly talented. They're building. They're building the team. They're going to have to rebuild. Detainment is usually what happens in growing pains agree with you right there. It's a rebuilding year now. Especially since Ben van is gone that young quarterback they brought in. I'm not sure a big been. We haven't seen last him. That might've been the last door with trevor. See from big bend would not be surprised if he doesn't come back. I hope he does because I like watching them play but that kid who came in they drafted him Rudolf. He played pretty. Well two touchdown passes. I think this is is going to be a season where you can watch and see with coach Tomlin if he can turn this around and get to five hundred with this group with that quarterback then I don't see why you fire especially with the history of the Pittsburgh steelers there was Chuck Knoll and Code Coats Kaur who else that it Mike Tomlin I the Rudy family stands behind the guy. I don't see him. Go anywhere. I started saying look went. This may be good for Mike Tomlin to get a fresh start and go someplace else. There's been a lot of things transpire and Pittsburgh from Labianca Abe to his relationship with big been that I if I have a chance asked to start over. Perhaps Mike Tom what I'd rather do with Julio Jones and Matt Ryan and the foul or would I rather the Go-to Carolina. Perhaps when reveres pushed out. There's going to be a lot of upheaval with some pretty solid organizations again. The Pittsburgh's organization is is rock solid but there's a lot of heat on Tomlin. He's I'm gonNA tell you the everybody loves to say his winning percents X Y and Z I do and people are going in. Pittsburgh are going to be like hey man when Bill Belichick Laws Brady they went eleven and five and we're in Pittsburgh is headed for four and twelve three and thirteen something something like that. I just think it would be good. Even for Tomlin. Go someplace else do that is an established organization and let me tell you something matic systemic wash. Don't be open no way don't don't yeah. Don't you dare. Don't you dare go watch the roof. They're always say this there. Are there are franchises and there are. NFL teams teams the difference between a franchise they win super bowls the difference between them and those those NFL teams those NFL teams played the teams that win the Super Bowl right. I'M NOT GONNA leave. A place. I was just saying is coming into work today. It's amazing that a black head coach was able to get the helm at Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh steelers because it is such a historic in history. I don't think it's amazing. I think it was something called. The Rooney rules yes yes. The route started not going to give you Blanco's ruined but nonetheless that's their first black third coaching fifty years again in the reality. The reality of that is that when you have a guy that has had the success. It wasn't a given that Mike Tomlin would come in. The floor is going through right now. Doing Lenovo Not Leflore the past wasn't my God bless. My guys name in Florida got it okay. I got a few points. I gotTa push back on one you know De. Utah get rid of him is GONNA fail forward and land in Atlanta wherever it may be just want to remind how'd you this second marriages fail at a higher rate than I wanNA know. Why because you think it's going to be better somewhere else. Oh fixed it was problem. He is still which brother all the different. You know that part too we will we will fail everyone watching at home as former players if we didn't take them into the locker room right now and tell them how this is really playing now. I'm gonNA tell you I ain't gonNA. Let them off the hook. You know damn well. Everybody unlocked say ball. You know bottom line me. That's Charles Pittsburgh. y'All try to play this high road oh and in building on sand and take the Harrow. Ab and you go cast him down and we are happy group. We're all good and boy that bought on Leibowitz Booysen Poetic Justice in the air right now. I'm just going to let you know that when you start losing players to injury you start feeling like they are. Oh into in to Thomas been here before in his career but still in Pittsburgh there looking like damn. Where's I be doing just landed with the Patriots Better Organization Better Success Ball and day one. It's just interesting that when they were playing this high road I knew it was gimmicky felt disingenuous disingenuous and it's just interesting. I know when I play and there's something happened on your side and we were pitted against each other. I would just sit there and look I wonder how to fill right now so no one thinks that there's a direct correlation between injury and them not performing well and ABC situation but pitted against each other. I think it's very peculiar peculiar that things are crumbling where they said everything was peace. Call in happiness just a few weeks ago Karma. I mean your point boy. You made an argument for why Mike Tomlin should be like. I'm out. I'm out of here. My brand is still strong. I can go land someplace sales sales. Look how well it's working for. Andy Reid Bill Belichick. You know this is his second job to reach. It's his second marriage so I just don't think the timing is bad for Mike. Tomlin Colin take his ball to another organization. Tony Gonzalez back joined now by former pro bowl receiver. TJ who spends auto let's move to the saints not only lost their revenge game against the rams but might've lost drew brees as well with quarterback exiting the game with a thumb injury in the first quarter according to Espn Adam schefter breeze we'll have surgery and is expected to miss six weeks leaving the team and Teddy Bridgewater Hand for the time being but but bridgewater has been below average he came into the league trailing the NFL average passing yards and passer rating and throwing twenty nine touchdowns in twenty nine start having said that I'm GonNa take teddy off the hook for their performance yesterday. I I thought Jerry Cook with potentially point shaving. Some of the stuff was doing it up and things like that. I thought that hurt them a lot. More than Teddy Bridgewater team was undisciplined sloppy. The some off false star penalties things like that can they survive without drew brees perhaps. I think Sean Payton can figure out a way to manage this team for six seven weeks without drew brees and visits not that great yeah. I think they can manage and I think they're going to be okay. one respect teddy bridgewater. Those numbers weren't so flattering but he did lead the Vikings to eleven five record. Remember that year would have one game Blair. Walsh went out there Blair Wasp project what the hell he was doing missing the Phil so they would've advanced in the playoffs so you gotta give Teddy Bridgewater some respect also we've all been in this position before where I came into League as a backup and one game. I remember Bruce Smith was. I ain't feeling that today and it was like eleven thirty and I was like well. We play one. You you can think about that during the week Wednesday and to go from humidity not prepared to play whatever that is to try accelerate that process that fast second series of a game you're in there. I don't care what level preparation you have. That's a tough ask for team in this complex system so you look at their next five games seahawks cowboys. ooh That's tough but then you got bucks in Jags. Okay start to fill yourself into bears. That could be a tossup game right there. I think that they will come back when jewell breezes available. They'll be a five hundred team with a lot of football left to play still in the playoffs. I see him surviving teddy bridgewater highest pay back up in the League for a reason he had an opportunity starting Miami. He turned down for the situation. You don't WanNa see drew brees go down but when he does it's like okay. This is why why came back to be the highest payback number one. The saints have a really good defense..

"Into the culture and organization was just different. You'd think the fifty third guy is going to sit there and say you know what man biz out here just getting senate in working hard but i'm hugh embiid is making sure everyone is on the same playing field. Everyone has to do it in an easier task than if mommy it just has to do that man. The head coach has to do that because if everyone is not on the page if i tell you do some and i watch you do it and you or not do it. I need to come to you and tell you you need to do this. How come get it done a big dog. How come there wasn't a browns way when belichick was there but there's a patriots way is because he got somebody who finally say. I'm gonna make sure i is the patriot way because bill belichick makes it the patriot what he was. Tom follows the same. That was <hes> follows through you. Were was there do me james told by multiple patriots players that tom. Tom brady will take but shoe in a meeting from bill belichick. He's allowing himself is not you said it boom he our house it. He is been allowing. Dad is the conversation that we're having but you've got to listen. Go out of demanded no no because when you're when you're dorothy figure in tober and others who we're sitting here saying ben is the guy you don't have complete control of personnel tomlin so you're saying undermine his power as a head coach. He doesn't have the power that been hass us in your situation. You're in pittsburgh but i'm saying from this vantage point if that was being a little too kills two thomas when i was in pittsburgh and i waited plan i know for a fact being wanted wanted me to play but i didn't so obviously the hell he taught power. They'll do like that. I i don't know those details you saying man. Dan has another nobody jay that's a hell of a point but i will say this and you know better than all of us in here. I do think the steelers front office has a culture sure that favors the players a tiny bit more than others and they believe we've hired three coaches. We know these coaches. Anybody by the comes into our organization as a coach is going to have success they. I think tend to value the players a little bit more than maybe other friend. He said he said then that uh-huh maybe in previous head coach but maybe not even cower. I couldn't say that i could not say gold approach. Is the guy thanked. Their structure is hey. We are in a point you the head coach. We're going to empower you to be the head coach the head coach now. That's up to you if you want if you want wanna establish that power. I don't think they circumvent the power of the head coach. I gotta in with this day. Kevin kober said there are fifty two kids under ben rothlisberger. He didn't say give them respect fifty three keys under mike tomlin come on man you already know how this is working out what woodlock wildly lavar arrington with time now for dardanelles question of the day. "I think that was his way of acknowledging that maybe the leadership wasn't quite what it needed to be so i think any any mention to how maybe they were talking a little bit too much and they should <hes> temper that down a bit so so i think he has shown some signs that he's willing to change and <hes> <hes> but like they've said we can't really see that but <hes> <hes> starting with <hes> the regular season we'll we'll finally get to find out <hes> some of these answers so <hes> i'm looking forward to seeing <hes> <hes> how he is and what your number twelve you know 'cause he's still a relatively young man so so people forget the coaches can improve and they can get better later and they can learn so you know <hes>. Let's see what happens. Dave scofield is coach. Mike tomlin a coach of the year candidate. Ah coach of the year candidate has everything to do with how the team finishes you could be the best coach without talent coming in at the beginning and you can't get there or if you make a really big jump coach. Tomlin is not going to be a coach of the year candidate because he's coaching the pittsburgh steelers to you've got a flash to the national media to win that award and guess what the steelers <unk> as an organization or too good to flash the way that you really have to do so. That's why i don't. I'm not saying that he shouldn't be considered but that's why. I think that he wouldn't win it. So if i'm not mistaken i don't think they've ever had any coach of the years <hes> <hes> that might be something for the statman there or might be one eighty nine. That's a that's a good throw that out there tony cause. I think you're right that no one at one point but i'm not sure when it was four yeah i think it would have been in the eighties is an eighty nine. Team was a nine hundred seventeen. That did some beautiful things and she was mark. Stock the drop the four and then treadwell for the broncos joint one in off the uprights <hes> gosh i still i. I need to go back doc in watch that game again to that was that was one heck of the game. There were so many chances for that team there too <hes> i i think they would have beaten cleveland and i think they would went on to the super bowl to play the san francisco forty niners who beat the broncos fifty five to ten. Maybe it's a good thing that they they didn't get there. I like bobby's odds against joe montana roger taylor on jerry rice the but anyways so that's that's a great question. We've asked questions coming in on the on the super chat here and a lot of them are excuse me not the super chip on on the live chat and get your questions in. We'll have some time for a few of them. <hes> one of them that we've got a couple of times. This is on who's going to get more carries. Is it going to be jas jason samuels or benny snail the but he's still junior. Excuse me tony. What do you think i think everybody wants to be benny snell because you know he's at prototypical steeler running back a wrench downhill whereas in in samuels is more of a <hes> swiss army knife kind of a weapon on offense where he could be utilized out of the backfield and <hes> it can even pull it a little bit of tight end but <hes> you mentioned <hes> mike tomlin and changing but <hes> with <hes> if if they started to go more <hes> give carries.

"Because he has that right type of player next to him again and yes because he was playing to that right with that type of player before for it showed you what he could do. Well you know we talked about players with new attitudes the whole team the coon by that. I've just been i might is. We'll get that copyrighted because i've been using that just ad nauseam <hes> so and oh by the way tony i saw your <hes>. I saw your your quote. I believe it on facebook about spelling ad nauseam if i'm correct on so i had to bring that up but i've been using i've been using team kun-bae like crazy. I'm glad to see that <hes> there were some flared up pensions the other day with a hayward with villanueva and they were joking about it afterwards. That's what happens in the heat. That's what happens when you have passionate. I have no problem with that so it's great to be amped up. It's great to have that new attitude and tweaking something's just upping the decibels upping the intensity. Can that be said for coach mike tomlin what have we seen so far from mike tomlin tomlin and has he up the intensity. Is he going to change. Is he going to tweak a little bit this year. Are we going to see less with the running backs running being the wheels off running backs. Are we going to see just call him upping the ante. This tier is missile midnight for mike tomlin as well dave. Let's start with you. You've got first of all. You've got to remember that you are talking to a former football coach so i've kind of been there with some of the stuff nowhere close to the level of these guys but at least i have an understanding adding of what it's like to to coach football being locker room and everything else there is nothing that we have seen from for mike tomlin this year to make us think that it's going to be any different but the key part of that phrase is that we have seen because the the biggest role of mike tomlin of coming out and answering questions at the end of every every practice and training camp which has been fantastic for helping me write some articles and from 'em taking over after the game added to his press conference everything we think i think that what mike tomlin is doing. They're on the sidelines. The biggest thing what my commas doing is in the locker room every day and we can't see it and we don't yeah no it but i'm hoping it's different because by seeing the players be different. You think that that's also got to be a reflection of what's going on with your coach coach. You know what tony i have. I seen i kind of feel a comb intensity from mike tomlin here. I feel like he has upped the ante. Where are you on this whole thing and we're not talking about and i mentioned threat level midnight. I'm not talking about his job at all. I'm just talking about him upping the ante knowing that this is a year where everybody was under fire in the off season because of some players leaving. There's been in all kinds of talk. You know that this guy is a competitor. He's itching to win. He's so do you think that he's going to turn that dial l. a. up so much more and maybe do some things he has not done. In the past. Yeah we talked about the running backs. I mean kevin covert mentioned that in the off-season about maybe they have to revisit their approach to that and and so that might be one aspect of the changes <hes> he <hes> he agree he to to have a coach that was in charge of challenges which had to be <hes> difficult for him to to admit that he wasn't really really good at that. You know it's not you know coach big egos and and you know we see legendary coaches like chuck knoll refused to change go-carts will come come a long time to open up the playoffs and trust is a franchise quarterback when he finally got one and you saw that paid dividends they want a super bowl with that so you know he mentioned <hes> how the departures of brown and bell a cleansing for the organization for the locker room..

"He's got his locker room back. So maybe you go to Ben Rothlisberger. Say Ben Look. I'm not gonNa tell you to do the show or not to your radio show but if you do that show you better keep your mouth shut when it comes to calling calling out players and you know what he has every right to say that even to a veteran like Ben Rothlisberger because you know why he's the head coach of the Pittsburgh steelers that's why he has every right to say that's a ban. He has every right to say to anyone on the team. ZIP IT UP ZIP it up. You know what everyone always criticizes Bill Belichick in that team up north as we call them for being so locked in and they're never saying anything guess what that it comes directly from the top. It is followed to a T. in that's that's how they do business in in my opinion I run a website that is you know we're looking for traffic. We're trying to write attractive articles that are going to get you to come to our site and read them. I would be fine fine not writing about this drama. That happens like Bud DuPrey in the comments. He made about lady on bell last year then. They raided his locker don't need to do it. Don't need to say it. Keep Your Mouth Shut Viz. These are some of the things that Tomlin needs is to start to curtail its. I think it stems back to Antonio. Brown's facebook live video during his post-game speech after the team beat the Kansas City chiefs in Kansas City in individual round of the playoffs that year. They're getting ready you to play the Patriots in Foxborough the A._F._C. Championship game. You're star wide receiver is more worried about his his image and how many people were on his facebook. Live feed fits word started but now as we're can end dole up to Mike Tomlin. Will he do it. I don't know I don't have a lot of faith in that. I like my talent. I don't want anyone to listen to this guy. He's just a tomboy Nader. I actually support Mike Tomlin. You can ask lands. You didn't ask anyone that I've gun shows with anyone that I've talked to. I actually like Mike Tomlin head coach but that doesn't mean he's perfect. It did Bill Kaur was a perfect Bucknell was imperfect. He's not perfect either but it's time for some change time to get at their time start. Start a new trend a new way of thinking in a way of acting for the Pittsburgh steelers because that stuff off the field that stuff in the locker room which was so calm quote unquote last year. I believe it bled onto the field. I believe it. Did you might disagree and you're entitled to your opinion. I think it did so Mike Tomlin. I know you're listening time for a change. "They just yell and scream, okay? To give him what he wants said that he shuts up that's kind of what I felt like. And so now, Mike Tomlin's gotta have this perception hovering over his head like a cloud saying can I control my players? He's got to prove it that's going to be some pressure. You those situations are going to happen. Someone's going to say something someone's gonna do some it happens all the time. I hope it doesn't happen that often this year for the Steelers. But if it does what you're gonna do that's pressure. I have to say that speaking of perception, Mike Thomas perception in terms of the national media, probably even the local media, probably even the fan base in even maybe I don't know this for a fact, I'm just guessing, but maybe even with other players that could be potentially free agents. I think Mike Tomlin's perception is at an all time low people used to tout him as the next great coach they wanted to they free agents wanted to play for him players want to be drafted by him players wanted nothing. But the play for Mike Tomlin coach t they heard all the stories. He's a winner. He's going to give you a good chance to succeed to get to the Super Bowl. I'm not sure if people think that anymore, and so Mike Tomlin might say. I don't care what other people think that are outside these walls. I don't care. Care, what the media says I'm gonna pay attention to that. That's all white noise. But you have to understand that he he feels it. He has to feel it if there was a free agent. And there was I think it was Roby the cornerback. They offered him a three year contract. He said, no, I'll take a one year deal for Houston to play quarterback for them instead of a three year deal in Pittsburgh. You have to wonder if someone said, I don't want anything. I don't want any part of that circus in Pittsburgh. And if they did. That's that's fresher perception can be reality, folks. And in this case, maybe it is. And if it is that's a problem. Okay. So now, let's go to the next one for my Thomas is number four. I think the ownership might be reaching the end of their rope with certain things it's tough to go into an office of a coach she's never had a losing season. And I know. I know I just said a few minutes ago, how the fan base of Mike Tomlin loves to tout that but bear with me. So you know, it suffered owner to go into my Thomas office in and complain about the product. But when this organization has been drug through the mud the way that it has and that they're not making the playoffs and they're losing first-round playoff games. Like, they didn't it gets the Jaguars after a buy in the divisional round, the two thousand seventeen with now all that stuff is having. It's just building. It's building the drama team turmoil. As everyone calls all this stuff building building building. You have to wonder when ownership art Rooney the seconds going to say I've had enough I've had enough. It's not going as planned. See? I'm not saying that's happened. I'm not saying they're thinking about it. But you have to think that if you're using the the terminology of the hot seat that might Tomlin's hot seat might be warming up a little bit this year in particular. You get rid of the clowns of the circus. Okay. They're gone. What he what does this team do? Now. A lot of people were down on the Steelers the over under a Vegas is nine wins. They used to be a joke in the they used to be a punchline nine Wednesay serious KOMO but not anymore..

"Thursday night around nine o'clock makes you check us out live here here live on YouTube. He's going to say, well, yeah. But Jeff there was the lowest total interception. Mark in the NFL. Like the last two decades. I don't care. He still led the league in interceptions. So I think there's gonna be some pressure for him to not turn the ball over as much. I remember as two years ago. He went into training camp saying he didn't want to throw any interceptions at all the entire camp. And I wanna say he came really close to doing that. And he s- protecting the football was paramount. But then last year and training camp, he came in with a little different mindset. And that was more of a I needed as let it loose. Sometimes we saw were that got him. So the pressure might be this year. He's got to play a little bit cleaner. He's gotta keep that football out of the defense his hands in that's going to be some pressure. So those five things I'll run down in case. You're just joining us live on YouTube number one where the comments made by his teammates. Okay. That the players that used to play with him and. And you're leaving town how they basically just ripped him. That's going to be pressure. No more Todd Haley to to you know, Bank on Randy feet ner experiences going into year two. So that's his offense. That's pressure hasn't been to the Super Bowl and over of ten years. That's pressure. He's got prove that it's Ben that made into Neo Brown. Not the other way around that's pressure. And lastly cancer so many interceptions. That's going to be pressured. Okay. Now, let's go to the other side of the docket. The other side of the coin, however, you wanna put it that would be Mike Tomlin head coach different kind of pressure much different type of pressure. I don't think that you know. We'll we'll answer the question, which is who's going to have who's gonna have more pressure into dozen nineteen. Let's go over. What might Thomas is the first and foremost top of the list for me you missed the playoffs last year. You were seven to an one at one point in did not make the. Playoffs finishing a distant disappointing nine six and one that leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth. I'm sorry. I people that are Mike Tomlin fans, and I'm one of them love to tout about all those things, you know. Hey, he's never had a losing season. And that's true. And that's awesome. But at the same time if you're eight or nine and seven in you don't make the playoffs. Who cares if you who cares? If you don't have a losing season. Yeah. That's just a nice little feather in your cap. You wanna make the postseason? You wanna get to the dance? You wanna punch your ticket at least giving you a shot, and they didn't do that last year. So that's going to be some pressure next is the this could be number one, it really could the perceived the perception I should say that he has an inability to control his players, I as someone that used to be coach. Now, if you listened to a standard as I've coached in high school, that's the extent of my coach house ahead varsity. Coach not football doesn't matter. If you're coaching group vigils, and it's a team sport. You have some of these issues when someone whether it's the media whether it's the team whether it's your ship perceived that you can't control your team. That's a problem. That's a big problem. So now, you have a situation where Mike Tomlin every single issue that might happen. Let's say a player misses a walk-through. Let's say a player as perpetually late. Let's say someone does something on the field that warrants a flag. Let's say an excessive celebration, let's say that somebody says something in the media that is not very attuned to the what the Steelers want to hear from their players, whatever the case is you have that happen. People are going to want to know, what's he gonna do? Because everyone thinks this is the perception that I'm talking about everyone thinks that Mike Tomlin just let lady on. L and especially in TIMMY, Brown just run rampant. They just run rampant kinda like that toddler that just gets whatever they want..

"You won't want to miss out on these deals. Head to go Honda dealer today. Okay. So yesterday, we talked a little bit about levian Bill gave his first interview to Sports Illustrated since signing with the jets in free agency. Let's hear a little bit more about that. He was talking about Ben Roethlisberger, and what kind of teammate Big Ben was it has been the quarterback at the time thinking that's supposed to be supposed to be. Leaders in my core. It's like us doing teammate. And then they were saying not Kevin couvert. Mr rooney. I'm just saying. All of these guys are so happy to be away from Big Ben, don't I'm this is this. Affil- like it was a boy band and somebody wanted to go. Oh, boy, man that got you know, they they all got together they had some success. But eventually you realize that no matter what you weren't going to be bigger than the leader of a group, which has been rothlisburger. And so at some point you're like, look either you're gonna pay me more money or I wanna go somewhere else and start my own group. And that's what lady Bill was basically saying there was that no matter what you are never going to be bigger than being. So I wanna go so world to start monger. I know it's hard, man. It's hard. I know you're you're a backstreet boys man or. Yeah. Back. All right. What I'm saying? I think that's good. But what do you think Ben's to who should shoulder a majority of the blame here for the break-up of the Steelers because they had the best trio and football. I think we can all agree on for several years, but never resulted in Ultimo any championships. Wow. Man. There's four guys here that are the biggest personalities and kinda share blame. I think Mike Tomlin Ben Rothlisberger. Antonio Brown Levy on bell. I think if there's anyone that I would have to I guess put blame on. I would have to put it on Mike Tomlin, and that's the hard part because I know Mike Tomlin such a great, dude. Good good guy. Good coach won the Super Bowl. You know? He's countless number of accomplishment, so far, but as the head coach who really think does a good job of kind of deflecting away from the players as much. He doesn't talk about guys who aren't there? Let's just talk about the the real issues instead of, you know, the players to me, I think is still falls on the coach in the the reason why say that is because I've and as a hate make the comparison, but look at the way Bill Belichick has ran the patriots. So. Many times is it still bills team. Or is it Tom's team like still bills team? And don't get me wrong. Tom is pulled the shots and doing what he's got to do. But. You know, and we've heard this different reports. But obviously they made the deal to trae Jimmy Garoppolo. They made the deal the trae some of the best player that they've had on that team. But yet they've never had the the big time they've had rumblings and remember the Seth wicker shin. Peace and we thought that the empire was gonna crumble hit. They've won you know, pretty much to the last week Super Bowls. It's just to me. It's how do I say that the coach is not always at fault?.

Super Bowl 2019: History says Rams vs. Patriots in Atlanta could be another all-time classic

"It is the once and for all finally, we have reached. Super Bowl fifty three a game that will be played down in Atlanta, Georgia. Right around six six twenty between the New England Patriots in Los Angeles. And I think it's now time for me to admit the bitterness the anger the bad feelings I had towards this year's game have to come to an end. Because now it's game time. Now, we will think about degrade. Bella check in the great Brady. Yes. Paul for. The course something we've seen quite a bit over these last seventeen eighteen years Brady and Belichick getting ready and preparing for the night's Super Bowl going up against the boy wonder the next great young coaching store in the NFL, Sean McVeigh, and he's very very talented, Los Angeles. I'm steam and remember, despite the fact that the Rams got the benefit of the whistle. And did not get that penalty. Flag down in New Orleans. Does. The fact that this Rams team all year one of Vegas favorites to win this year Super Bowl. The Rams come into this game. We're Boorda talent. That's why you think about where this line opened up opened up with the LA Rams, basically is a one point favorite. Now that has changed you're going to see New England anywhere from two and a half to three maybe it falls to two we will have to wait and see. The reason New England is going to get that. Nod as far as being a favor, according to Vegas, according to a good amount of you. It's because of what those two gentlemen, had done throughout their entire NFL careers. It's very tough to go into these Super Bowls and pick against Tom Brady and Bill bell check. And I've done it on a couple of occasions that didn't last year had success with Philadelphia Eagles for some of you. You may be did it against the Atlanta the Seattle Seahawks and you can have success when it's twenty eight three falcons. We know what happened. Now, you're probably thinking you're going to have success bet against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick went Seattle and curse makes the spectacular catch. And they're inside the five yard line and marshawn Lynch does not get the ball. And Russell Wilson is intercepted. One of the greater Super Bowl mysteries in the history of my lifetime. This patriot team all year. According to most of us. Fans media, whoever you may be maybe thought they were losing a little bit. Maybe thought that this team didn't have the same offensive firepower. How long can Tom Brady continue to dominate on the north side of forty how much gronk have left. What about the loss of Josh Gordon who they brought in to be a big play weapon? Just goes to show you when you count out the New England Patriots. You're making a monumental mistake. And our molested picked against the patriots in the division around. Bingo well against the patriots two weeks ago championships Sunday instinct classic game. No went to overtime Tom Brady and the pats Bill Belichick and the pats still at team that's left standing. The Rams dole have avenues and ways to win this game. You don't work it. The Rams, nor should you look at the Rams. The way he did on now. The two thousand seven New York Giants who were an overwhelming underdog coming into the game. And we know what happened. The giants won a game prevented the nineteen year. You don't have that here with New England in Los Angeles these evenly matched games. In fact, you could argue one through fifty three you liked the talent of the Los Angeles Rams. A little more. Not crazy. Take reds gonna win this game. If we're sitting here Monday morning, and I'm breaking down Tom Brady going five and four now in Super Bowl games. You will need to see I think to specific keys paramount. The first band, and this is a given any time you're going up against Tom Brady, you better hit him. You better get them into the ground. You'd better sack him. Your pasteurized. Gotta do some work. I won't get Aaron Donald. I look at consumer the interior pass. Rush four. The LA Rams is going to have to play a major role. You did about age rushers. You ain't going to find a better pair of edge rushers Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. I thought off the age those guys we're gonna get the Tom Brady. But remember the game plan for New England was so good net game. He's getting rid of ball, one one and a half seconds. Two seconds bowl. It's out. So you can generate much pass rush. You get them up the middle of changes things a little bit. Aaron Donald wanna show me wise best fence player in the league. Superbowl Madama can sue who has made plenty of all pro teams over the years. Now has his chance in his first Super Bowl to go wreck. Tom Brady, he's had some big games and postseason remember one when he was with Detroit against Dallas Cowboys was in Tony romo's face. Play off the play off the play. I remember game last year. I went to data south Florida when Dominic can sue was over Tom Brady, make your life miserable. For Tom Brady to me. That's data happen. Then you have on the offensive side for LA. Todd Gurley who is one of the most electrifying playmakers in the sport. Who I would argue is the best running back in the sport. Has in. Exactly been that player. Let's be fair. Even if you look at it as a hundred yards that he had against Dallas in the divisional round. Is that what you're going to remember about that game? Of course, dont. No, you have one or two big Ron's that came was all about C, J Anderson and his ability to run the football. You at the championship game Elliott had far more success. Throwing the football running the football. We now has basically two weeks to rest up. We'll see if he's much closer to one hundred percent. I can't envision the LA Rams winning this game and Todd Gurley. He's not gonna play a major role. You know, Bella check will look to take away what you do best. Now. That's the great chess match between these still McVay and Goth trying to get to the line of scrimmage quickly. Surveying the landscape of the field and in China to figure out what they're going to do. And Bella check and his mastery China counteract at the more and more thought about that the more and more fun this Super Bowl matchup become for me. I have to admit because that idea of Sean McVeigh China show a guy. Analyzed a guy that a lot of coaches around the league now who are having great success did going to idolize Bill check because they're going to look at him as the modern day will forty gigging to look at him as a modern day Paul Brown where nobody's doing what he's doing. All these coaches seem to have a shell five all these coaches, even if they're in a job for a long period of time, they have that downturn. John Harbaugh had that downturn Tom Coughlin eventually had that downturn. Mike Tomlin now was having that downtown with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dan, never happens for Bill Belichick and the patriots. They don't miss the postseason. They've only done so twice in seventeen years. Never missed the playoffs since two thousand eight and that was when Tom Brady tours ACL they are used to being in the big game. Wait a variety of different players, and how can McVay now with a roster has maybe a little more talent. Make the necessary adjustment. If need be at halftime figure out. All right. They're taking this guy away. We're gonna make this guy star or that guy star. It's fun

"We're going to stick with a bow scheme. We're going to stick with a bow. And they stayed with then obviously Butler takes over. And then all of a sudden Tomlin started getting his hands into the mix little more. They started running more zone covered scheme. They started to really work on the Tampa twos tile defense. But again, I asked the question is this all Tomlin URS this mainly Butler? They've won in the same. So let's get back to the question at hand who's to blame who maybe that's not the best way to put it who shoulders more blame in the fact that this defense who has been in rebuilding mode since probably two thousand eleven it's two we're going into the two thousand nineteen season. Eight years of rebuilding. You should have rebuilt the defense ready. That's that's the way it is. Okay. You look at the offense, and and they'd kind of rebuilt themselves in a lot of different ways. But the defense is seems to knob yet again it there, and there's a lot of blame to go into that. So who is more to blame? Well, I think Keith Butler has plenty of blame to go on his shoulders when it comes to the way that the team prepares the defensive game plan going into games to me that's on Keith Butler. It falls on his shoulder. That's a Mike Tomlin's. Gotta sign off on this stuff. He's the head coach. I get that. But Tomlin is not in the defensive Filmer in the entire time. He's gotta be over in the offense aside special teams. He's thr- spread pretty thin Butler's, the one's gotta come up with some of these games. And you think about the way some of these games have played out. And you're thinking my goodness. Who saw what what in the world is this game plan? You know? L at the same time you have to save. Do we give Keith Butler a lot of credit because this defense has put up one hundred and eight sacks in the last two seasons? Fifty six setting a new franchise record two thousand seventeen in fifty two tied for the NFL lead in two thousand eighteen so for as bad as some things are with his defense. They do know how to get after the quarterback that's been proven. It's then I look at it into. Okay. What about this head coach who's a defensive guy? That's people often forget, he's a divas of guy. They say this is a hey all defense. This was his forte. How's the defense that bad? And that's a question every wants to know until me the answer. This question who is more blame? It has to be Mike Tomlin because for all those categories that I broke down personnel players. Whether it's free agent acquisitions and fell draft handling the players currently on the team on the defensive side of the football. All of that it boils down to the head coach. And I guarantee their circumstances and situations or Mike Tomlin will Trump Butler, and they were going to do it this way. Sometimes maybe it's maybe Tomlin does that. And we don't know this because we're not there again. But maybe Tomlin did have prior to the New England Patriots game said, look, we're not doing the same old same old. We're going to mix it up. Here's what we're doing. And it works. You don't hear about that? That would help. Mike Tomlin's rep reputation immensely with the fan base. He doesn't care that the same time. We'll never know that either at the same time, you know, it could be Tom on that marches into the room. It says against the Oakland Raiders, we're going to do this this and bother might be sitting on his hands and coach his bad idea. But he's not the head coach Mike Tomlin has to carry the majority of the blame. That's not to say that Keith butlers innocent. It's not to say the Keith Butler doesn't have a mess on his hands as it is. But here's the thing. I bad as the defense is not an article about this today. It was the second part of the three. Part series about how to fix the two thousand nineteen Steelers in I focused on the fence today. It's fitting that I'm doing this topic on the burning question podcast..

"mike tomlin" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain

"Curtain dot com here with you for another weekly installment of this solo episode where I answer a question that might just be on a lot of folks minds that follow the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, if you haven't heard the news yet, and maybe you haven't because there have been a lot of sources that have come out with us, but the Pittsburgh post gazette writer, Jerry dulack put out that recently the Steelers organization and Mike Tomlin ultimately decided that instead of replacing outside linebacker Joey outside linebacker coach. Reporter they decided to just have Keith Butler defensive coordinator take over those duties now a lot of people myself included, I might what? Well, then I thought about it a little bit more. And I understood that Butler has plenty of experience in this arena. And. Fact, he was the linebackers. Coach was prior to them having an inside linebacker special coach specialty coach an outside linebacker specialty coach I used to be just Butler himself. This is under the dick lebeau regime. Duke LeBow was forced out of town. Keith. A is when you organization decided to bring in Jerry will sassy coach the inside linebackers and Joey porter to coach the outside. Clearly, they fire Jerry porter or his contract was not renewed. Same thing in my opinion. None the less. It's all semantics and so instead of bringing in an outside source for talk. We heard any named like Kevin Greene was thrown around the lot. They decided to say hey on top of being the defensive coordinator urine. Now be responsible for the development and production of players. I T J watt, and bud depre- and whomever else they might bring it now at this time. I also think myself in this was noted in do lex article that this is the only coordinator that has a secondary duty, for instance, rain defeat and is also still the quarterbacks coach, I get that. But he's going to be dealing and talking with Ben Rothlisberger a ton anyways. In terms of how they draw up plays. And how they. They focus on specifics in how they're going to attack defense as pretty much the same thing. I ask though, how is this going to change the way Keith Butler does his job because think about it this offseason? Terms of the coaching staff has been some changes, you know, out side of Joey porter. They bring in tarot Austin who used to be the defensive coordinator the Bengals who was fired midseason. He's a defensive assistant. That's going to be also helping out the secondary, very odd. Emma seemed as if they're going to have to coordinators, you know, Austin in Butler Butler will take care of the front seven. And then clearly awesome. Take care of the back end. I'm not saying that's how it's going to happen. It just seems like maybe that's the direction they're headed. With that said, I think that we all myself included can look at this situation and say if there's a weakness on this Pittsburgh Steelers team, whether it was two thousand eighteen or whether it was moving looking ahead to two thousand nineteen it's on the defensive side of the football. It's not that the offense hasn't had issues. We know that they do. But at the same time this defense has some glaring glaring weaknesses. And so you can talk about coaching. You can talk about a lot of different things. The question the burning question on tonight's episode is who is more to blame. Head coach Mike Tomlin defensive coordinator. Keith butler. The reason I asked is because it's a season ended. Everyone always wants to fire Tomlin. And there's a lot of people that have some serious underlying issues with Mike Tomlin that don't have anything to do with football. That's fact, not saying that's a vast majority of fans, but there are plenty that won him gone..

Is it possible for the Rockets to beat the Warriors?

"Want to buy. Aids. Is it possible? The rockets could get it together by the Western Conference fund where they're better than they were last year. Is that possible? I don't think so it's not possible. I don't think so I think that's poss- adult at the sixty five wins as good as they looked last year. I don't think it's possible for most teams to be better than they look lashes out. But what I mean is actually better like the the warriors one seventy three games. Yeah. And then they got better because they added the rent their regular season record wasn't as good. But in the moment of truth, they were clearly the best team. And of course, they should be big favorites. Again, the way they've been looking recently. And the talent we know they have my point is if you believe it's possible for the rockets to actually in the moment of truth now that they have the experience of last year be better than they were last year. They only need to be that much better by the snow. You don't think the lawyers? Got you go, Molly, I'm trying to make. It's just interesting doing down that ladder. They had no man that tell C P three got hurt. I just. Very very very clear. My reservations for Oakland have already been made. There is no there's no issue. Here is your I will be in Oakland at oracle ju- where where are you going to be on the east coast with us? I'm hoping I'm hoping today Milwaukee. But only for you know, I may wanna socialite that's all your team because a lot of drama goes another day in more support coming out for Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown. This time for fellow wideout juju Smith Schuster crazy stuff about AB. You gotta fill in a law firm. If you come back, you guys welcome. And they man he may he's guy. Yeah. Well, I wonder what his teammates feel about this tweet from AB who usually says businesses Bowman and right now, Stephen he's open for business. It'd be over for whatever you want still is Abbas right to say other so exc- he could be open to whatever he wants. I don't give a damn about Antonio Brown's feelings right now I wanted to stay with this. These that great. And really, by the way, I'm not telling you anything. I haven't told him. Yeah. If a damn by his feelings, I want him on a steel course. I don't want to Steelers to trade this, man. He's great. He's too. Great figuring it out. I'll give it there. You gotta give them a massage pedicure. You gotta take them. You gotta have sports therapy sessions with you gotta go play with his cage got treated to dinner for the next day. What you gotta do. Now. I will say this. I want him to apologize to Mike Tomlin to for pudding that coach in that position. But particularly considering the paucity of African American coaches, so only two and NFL it'd be three by the time. New England wins the Super Bowl, I guess unless they lose the bottom line is is that I don't like the position. He put my Tomlin. And that's about it outside of that. He doesn't want get Tomlin put him. That's fair. That's fair. Let's get over it and figure that I or Rooney is saying I don't see how you can be on the team next year. Yeah. And all the press all the chirping out of the Steelers negative towards the future with Antonio round. Like, we don't we don't see it, basically. Now, all of the sudden juju Smith Schuster, though, watching his body language and his and hey, Derek Carr. Yeah. I'm I'm inferring. What I see? That's true. I didn't seem to me like it was in juju Smith, Schuster heart. But you can't know another Mantar all you can do is inferred from what you see. Didn't I don't know? If he if those words that are coming out of his mouth reflect the way, he's feeling, but I'll let me read between the lines a little bit. It seems to me Stephen A that at the point that they were saying all that stuff. They were probably thinking we are going to try to trade him. And probably I imagine started to kick the tires on some trade ideas like one could they get back for him. And I think what I read this. As is. Maybe what's happening here is they're not liking what they're hearing in terms of the return on moving Antonio Brown. And that they're better off with him. That's my sense. If they don't if that is true, then the Steelers would have everything to do with that. Because how do you want to trade such as surreal asset and command top dollar a top cash eighth for him? When in fact, you've served a role in excoriating, correct? So what you do don't they say this is what happened with Kyrie? Right. When the whole world. Knows he's outta there. Or you're gonna get the best offer. The worst offer at the worst offer you have to make people believe that he's going to stay whether that's because you don't get the offer you want. It's going to snake or to make people believe it. So they come with a better offer before we move onto LeBron. I just have to say this quick. I don't think I ever gave you props on this. When lady on bell was sitting going to sit out. And I was like there's no way he sits out. You're like, no he's probably going to sit out and he sat out the entire season. I think you're the only person that actually believed that he would do that. When we think he could do if you wanted the gold at the end of the grandma never would his type talent on that team. But happened LeBron James on this is fifteen straight game with the Lakers take on the Timberwolves tonight. But he hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's matchup with the sons, according to coach Luke Walton when he was injured on Christmas day the Lakers weren't fourth place in the west since they injury, Los Angeles five and nine they've dropped to ninth plates in the west, Stephen A. How bad is what bronze injury for the Lakers of worry. I was told not to be worry if LeBron James Levy reading. Needed to he could go out the plate, and he would be ready, but I find this to be the most significant injury of his career I'm incredibly concerned because I want the Lakers to get a big time free agent. I want them to make some noise in the summertime, and I think that obviously when you took thirty four years of age, they are going to be people who are going to question your ability, even the great LeBron James almost never hurt. So the fact that he's outright. Now, you have to wonder whether or not a potential free agent is going to look at that. And question how much time does he have left at this level? That's when I'm not saying there's any legitimacy to that. I'm simply saying that that's a reasonable cause for concern. And so the bright lights LA Tinseltown palm tree. So the California weather notwithstanding. You'd never know what some marquee free agent is going to look at when it comes to Magic Johnson. Lincoln picking up the phone to call them and say come on L A what I man the Bron. When in fact, they're wondering about LeBron. More. I look at this more. I think Jerry's going to be a Laker. Yeah. Because I started to run down the scenarios if it's not a Y, and it doesn't look like it'll be why I wouldn't put anything past magic he landed. Lebron after all if it's not going to be K D or someone like that if Kemba Walker in fact wants to stay where he is. And they work that out if Mike Conley is not the answer in a trade. And if the Celtics don't wanna give Kyrie a supermax like why would we want to stay in Boston, not only that they're extremely talented coach the whole thing, but he'd get a supermax deal. Then I think kyri and LeBron could come around in their own minds to seeing a reconciliation as hey, what if Kobe and shack worked it out what if they parted ways? But then they said, you know, what we messed this up. Let's work this out and that eventually the Lakers would be Kyrie's team that's got to be very appealing. We know kyri has relationship with Kobe. And could you imagine if the Lakers didn't have to give up any assets at this trade deadline, if they kept Ingram and Kuzina and. An and heart and all these guys and simply added KYW read or run Bill that happens where are they in the west for ten Kyrie's there right now with LeBron and LeBron's healthy. And assuming Ingraham continues to improve and mom gets a little better share, maybe one more acquisition the right acquisition. Lakers can win the chip next year. If kyri is there, you do not need Lonzo ball. They're correct. And that means you might get something for Lonzo. Then you might not need Brandon Ingram either. Say that happening playing with LeBron listen, I'm told that is far fetched kyri is happy and Boston. He has no intentions of leaving. But Kenny had ever go around not shutting. I don't have to pretend I'm not sharing anything anything's together. Anything is they get back together for now. Sure about that. Thanks. Mitch listening to the podcast gets. I take weekdays ten AM eastern ESPN.

Ex-Steelers OC Bruce Arians says Antonio Brown isn't same player Pittsburgh drafted

"Of Antonio Brown. And he was the offense coordinator at one point in time before leaving Pittsburgh. And then joining the staff of Chuck Pagano in Indianapolis, and then becoming the colts interim coach as he battled cancer Picado dead and successfully thanked out and it became the Arizona Cardinals head coach. And now as the town. Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach. And that is Bruce Arians who said that he would not be interested in in Antonio Brown that he's too much of a diva. Antonio Brown is is not the same player. That the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted not physically we're talking about. Now. We're talking about everything else that comes along with Antonio Brown. Besides his ability to help you out and special teams and catch the football as an NFL wide receiver. Yeah. You know, Arians, basically said he's heard a lot of stories about as recent how he is speaking of Antonio Brown. And he said he plays as hot as anybody on Sunday. He practice really hard to. But you know, he's he's basically said as a paraphrasing. He's got him. He totally Brown's gotta make better decisions off the field as far as his punctuality and stuff like being being on time and whatnot. That's we said, so it's pretty interesting new head coach, you know, you've been in the broadcast booth for a year your new head coach of the box. This guy's a Steeler kinda. And I honestly coached them. It's you know, it's interesting to hear him say that about him. So it doesn't sound like Brown be going to Tampa Bay anytime soon. No. It doesn't sound like that. And that's the concern. I mean, you know, you can listen to every former NFL player, whether it be Jerry Rice and others say that he wants to be a San Francisco forty nine or that's great. I may it's great. And I do we both are in agreement TASR that Antonio Brown's gonna get traded this off season by the Pittsburgh Steelers. OB fascinating the team that he does go to am. I telling you that he's a losing player. Antonio Brown can help you in football games. But I will say that there's a lot of headaches now Brown and distractions. Yeah. Great point that Antonio Brown brings to the table that I don't know if there's a lot of NFL head coaches that are going to go out and look to embrace it. I really do. And that's the issue. I have with Brown is I don't want to deal with the nonsense. I really don't as Aaron said, you know, there's the little things that he doesn't do shop to shop to practice on time show up to meetings on time. You know, you're asked to run a hot return a walk-through run the run the hot read. What are you? What are you doing here? I mean, come on. Exactly nervous. I understand what you thought. I was going. I remember where it was funny. I mean, honestly, I it's not that difficult to it's not that difficult for Antonio Brown to handle his responsibilities. Yeah. I completely agree. I've never heard that before I was refunded. Agree with you to moves by. Yeah. Yeah. It was great. Yeah. Man. You know, I think you're going to get some coaches that are that will some teams that will wanna take that chance because how talented these days. We've all in all careers separately. You and I coming up in in all world separately. Right. I'll separate worlds. I'm sure you've come across the state me. All you've heard of guys that you may be going to do business. What guys or girls that you're going to do business? What that you've heard a lot of negativity about. And what's the first thing you said yourself? Well, I okay. This person's talented. I'm going to judge them for once. I get to know them. You give them that. You know what? I mean. I, you know, my wife always taught my son that you might hear things about someone judge them. I from how you judge them. Okay. Take defamation here. But a lot of times it could be hearsay on the advice. It is with this guy here. It's been a like him himself. He's combustible. He's tweeting stuff. Meaning it's Brown. He's been doing a lot of stuff. He's creating he's adding a ton of gasoline to these little fires that war with the Steelers in Hammond Tomlin. So if you're another coach, my point is that I do think some of the coaches or a coach will say, okay. This guy's really talented. He's a superstar. He's going to put as we going to put people to seats in the building. Okay. And and these stadiums role big he's a draw. He's going to draw people. He's a star. I so we've heard all this bad stuff about them. Just like Erin said, I've heard the stories a younger coach hypothetically might say. Well, I wanna to take that chance. I've heard the stories too. But I'm going to judge Antonio foot for what what I see we're going to take a chance on him. And that's what then you gotta hope for the best because he's gonna end up somewhere. Most you know, he's just too damn. And that's a fair way to fair way to look at it by also think that if you're having issues with a player friendly coach, Mike Tomlin, see, I I think there are guys that can't work and play for Bill Belichick. I think there are guys that can't work and play for other disciplinarians like a go back a couple years go back years ago. Bill Parcells right there. There are guys it just it just doesn't work. Now, if you can't play for a guy like Mike Tomlin, who's bent over backwards to placate you over the course of your career as you've changed with the success as your personality is changed with the money. All of that is well deserved because it's earned. I'm not talking about his personality all the money that comes his way. Tasr? I also have to look at that. Same of you have issues with Mike Tomlin, what the hell are you gonna do here? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Mike cobblers a really is he's apprentice coach player friendly code. But there will he will be playing in the National Football League next year, you'll be making seventeen eighteen million dollars a year. God bless, but there's there's a lot. There are other guys as Bruce Arians said, I think there are a number coaches to say, I don't want daddy. Deal with that. I don't want that toxic person in your locker room. That's what you don't want. You know, you don't want that. Like, I'm a bills fan as you guys know, and I I love all young quarterback. And if we gotta Antonio Brown. I think that'd be amazing. Be awesome. But I would worry that he would like inadvertently mess. What the Josh out? I would worry about that. And I think that's a fair fair concern. But I think that a lot is coaches will judge him. For what they think and and meet with him Suez heads out, and let's just I just play a little bit on Antonio Brown side. He's been with the same organization right out of college. Right. So seven eight years, whatever it is sometimes difficult to paint. Sometimes you you'll be in better behavior. When rental the people a change of change of environment sometimes could help, and maybe that's what he needs, and maybe things will change. And may maybe

"mike tomlin" Discussed on First and Last

"This product contains nicotine nicotine is an addictive chemical first and last podcast. Did you haven't been following? What's going on in Pittsburgh and Tonio Brown was not on the field for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday? We originally told that was because of a knee. Injury. They were looking into. Then report comes out this weekend. You see it in the Pittsburgh post gazette that Tonio Brown had not been injured. But in fact, it had an altercation with Ben Rothlisberger during a through during the week hadn't shown up to walk through on Saturday on the weekend. Hadn't communicated with his team or teammates in a number of instances, and then showed up to the game Sunday expecting the play was told he wouldn't play and then the rest of this ensues. So now, we hear all that we hear all these reports. And we start to hear more and more the rumblings about who an Tonio Brown supposedly is behind closed doors or in Pittsburgh in a way that does not paint him in a positive light. Mike Tomlin the Steelers head coach gets the first chance to speak, and this becomes interesting because Mike Tomlin I said the other day probably not getting enough credit for the job. He's done managing to keep this all under wraps. And there's a lot of debate about people saying, well, you create an environment where this confessor you create an environment where it eventually got to this point. I'm not sure I wanna come down on Mike Tomlin for the actions of one person in all this. Because again, I think you've got a separate levian bell situation. What's going on with Antonio Brown? Right now. One seems to be about money. Antonio Brown seems to be about everything else because he's well paid well compensated. None of that seems to be in question at this point. But everything else seems to be up in the air. So Mike Tomlin's been handling this. And I think Mike Tomlin again now is coming out and trying to handle the situation as best. He can protect everyone involved. So that they can handle this the way they want to. But the bottom line is this all to me reeks of a lack of accountability. And when that lack of accountability bleeds over to the field, you reach a point where you can no longer trust this person as your teammate. And if this is something that's been demonstrated in smaller instances behind closed doors, the moving on would be the thing you'd like to do. But for all the financial reasons that seems like it's going to be impossible in. So mending this fence becomes the number one off season priority for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Here's Mike Tomlin Steelers head coach in his exit pressure yesterday talking about Antonio Brown. A conversation had with his agent and what happened through their eyes on Sunday. Reading up to that game against the Cincinnati Bengals woke up Sunday morning and got a call. Call from his agent. Drew Rosenhaus drool express that he was feeling better. And that he will potentially be able to participate outlined the drew that decisions weren't made like that. But I would be interested in visiting with him in person at stadium prior to the game. But playing what knowing the menu. So drew relate to him. I met with AB prior to the game he asked what he could do. I said the best thing he can do in terms of helping us win the game to be there and support his teammates. He agreed to do that we had a general conversation about his overall health. I sent him to the training staff to visit with those guys who obviously were stadium ready and people for play. And that was the last conversation that he and I had I last Michael junior here on ESPN radio so on a base level because I don't want to just discount. What might Tomlin saying and say he's covering them from clearly, but on a base level. If this was even the only problem, it's a problem. Like if you're not communicating about these things in a crucial time of year this one week one of the season. This wasn't after the Steelers are well out of playoff contention. Wouldn't after they had anything locked up..

"And I've gone back. He drives me nuts. But I will say this. I have heard people I had an I had a scout say Dakhil only work in this league. If he has a great running back in fairness at this point Tom Brady needs a running game. At this point. Drew Brees needs a running game. Jared Goff needs a running game. Let's slow down a little on. Dax the only quarterback who needs a great running game out. I mean Carson Wentz who is a wizard. Doesn't have the running game this year in the same guy. Dak ceiling is low. We would both agree with that. I agree. But most every quarterback even Aaron Rodgers right now what's his record? Don't have much of a consistent running game index stealing is low, but he would Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys organization sees as they see the future with that growing in him on the incline versus on the decline at the beginning of a quarterback's career. A running back is most important, and I believe at the end of a quarterback's career a running back as more most important, very good point, Greg Jennings. All right. So. You know, it's funny. The raiders beat the Steelers, and I got glossed over because the bears Rams and the Cowboys won the Steelers lost to Oakland for everybody watching and nobody talked about it because there were so many big games over the weekend. The Steelers lost to the raiders. Okay. The dysfunctional raiders. And in the game big bend was healthy. And they kept Josh Dobbs in it. Once again, the Steelers are sort of unraveling is it fair to compare Tomlin and ban. They got a little McCarthy. Aaron rodgers. Yes. Yes. I know I haven't been in that locker room. So I don't know the ins and outs of that dynamic. But yes, but when you look at who will be on the out you look at the Green Bay Packers. And look who they chose the quarterback the quarterback chose the quarterback. I'm sticking with the hall of Famer the guy who's going to sell these tickets when you look at the the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mike Tomlin as much winning as he's done. So did Mike McCarthy as much success? They've had together Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers. But if I have to decide on who I'm going to continue to move for. With I am not parting ways with a hall of fame quarterback because that looks bad on us as an organization I've said this for years people compare Rogers to Brady he compares favourably. With Ben transformational talent lot of drama can be a little passive aggressive through the media. I mean, Aaron Ben literally they are the two guys true. They without saying it, they're constantly saying, I think there's a lot in common. That's why I think the suggestion that Tomlin he's run. His course is fair not saying you have to fire him. But if you're gonna fire McCarthy midseason afra- bat eight nine game stretch, you can at least consider Tomlin. You can bring it up. It's a fair com. It's definitely a fair column in and you've always said this Tomlin gets a pass. He's funny. He's incredibly Anna. It's Mike Ditka. And I think he gets the past because of the culture of that. That organization but because they don't turn over coach either to the Packers. Really hackers don't either. But, but when you really look at the Pittsburgh Steelers, they don't revolve that door and also the head coach, they just don't do it. And so they'll put up with more more in Bill, take the winds. We haven't won the big game in a long time..

"Go to Oakland and lose yesterday. Unbelievable. Twenty four to twenty one Chris Boswell missed an extra point. But the story of this game for a while was Ben Rothlisberger getting hurts volume. He stayed out until they started to lose. And then he goes back in. Yeah. We'll ribbon DRAM in the fact that he was back on the sidelines. Sounds like he was cleared to come in. Mike Tomlin said later that. It was the game flow that the game at the time did not allow for him to return. You know, what our interpreted the bottom line? He went into the locker room to get X. Rayed checked out comes back. He's okay. Yeah. Not a great game for an Tonio Brown. Five for thirty five. Jersey was unbelievable though. Eight thirty three touchdowns thirty three points for juju. But the real story was how would this backfield shake out yesterday? Jalen Samuels, Stephen really, the answer was an overwhelming. Jalen Samuels is the guy Stephen really found the end zone, but he had five carries for four yards. One. Touchdown. Jalen Samuels, by the way, seven catches on seven targets of sixteen point two. If James Connor MRs next week and Adam Schefter reported it's possible play. But we'll find out later on. Then you have to figure. Jalen Sanyo's is an Rb to again this weekend's the

"Don't wanna be team that plays down today. How concerning is it that they sometimes play poorly against poor teams? It's it's just I feel like it's a lack of focus. But I then when I think about this team and all the nonsense in the stuff in like individually, you can go who cares into Brown's, live streaming post game locker room thing. Okay. Well, yeah, by itself it wouldn't be a big deal, but then it's living on contract stuff and the fact that the entire offense of line turned on him which we never ever see you just don't see in this sport and then you have rothlisburger 's oddities of sometimes you know. You know, like I don't know. Sometimes Rothlisberger sounds like really scripted and manufactured like he's he's reading lines that you'd expect from a quarterback. And then other times I'm like, is he being honest or jerk, and I, you know, I can't. I can't tell like, I just it's a team and I've always said this about them on paper. I've liked him so much better than other teams over the years. But I guess after a while I kinda stopped wanting to Bank on them figuring it out. Yeah, they do have a lot of merger personalities on that too. I totally agree with you. And the other thing I've heard of any not all criticism of Mike Tomlin. We're just having a Steelers discussion, but I've heard this from people within the NFL. I've often thought at myself if you had described Mike Tomlin's core football values and what his identity is, what his team's identity is. I don't know where he would begin and end with that. I don't quite know how to define might tell me as a head coach. It's amazing. You've been around a long. He's been in. All right, so long. And I think there are people within the league, not the people who play against them or coach or them necessarily, but but people within the league who might see him every few years who say, we really don't quite know what Mike Tomlin team should look like, what is the identity there. Yeah, because it's not traditional Steeler stuff. It hasn't been for a while and it used to be for awhile, spread 'em out throat a million times. And then Ben was taking a beating and then levian been terrific the last couple of years, but you know, they've drafted running back. So I think they kinda knew that worst case scenario, this kind of weird. I've had some bad luck with injuries linebacker. Certainly, she's ear as well. The oh lines had real up and down moments under Tomlin. I think you'd agree like there were times I go man. If it wasn't for Rothlisberger. I don't know who else would survive back there. And now I feel like talent wise, it's, it's finally come around the last couple years, but I don't know. I think Tomlin is so convincing, like I have this Jay Bilas theory right in that Jay Bilas could say the most ridiculous thing ever, but he's gonna convince us right? Because he's Jay Bilas. He's one of the best public speakers I've ever seen. He's incredibly brilliant, and I've actually disagree with Jay uncertain NCA things. And then when I've disagreed doing the radio. Showed ESPN with Bilas. It's like, oh my God, somebody disagreement, Jay Bilas and I kinda go, yeah, it's weird, right? Because you never think you want to disagree with them because he's so damn convincing. He's a lawyer. He's as well spoken. If you're talking about just the industry, forget college, basketball. I'm envious of Jay Bilas efficiency to answer the question. He's as good as anyone talking sports and maybe even talking on television. What's the topic? Okay. Here's the point that I'm going to make an. I'm going to be convincing concise inefficient with every word I use. He's incredible. But sometimes. Bilas before I would love to sit in his talk with him for a few hours sometime because he also comes across even if he's making a bold statement, he's willing to make those. He comes across as level headed in reasonable every single time, no matter what he said. Exactly. So you never want to disagree with them. So you know, I was on get up a few weeks ago and he came onto started ripping the NCAA again because he does. He just rip them all time..
