"It took just 37 words to open the door for women. No person, shall, on the basis of sex, be subjected to discrimination. Title 9, the law that changed the game. All I knew was that I didn't feel tennis was right. 50 years on. What happened when we let women play? Without title 9, I don't think I'd go to northeastern university and win. For the four part podcast on 37 words and the ESPN daily feed on your favorite podcast app. Street games and they were almost like sport extensions of the block party. It wasn't just about basketball. It's about culture. You're just trying to figure out how we could go see some of these games. They added a disrespect. That's how you break somebody. This is the story of the greatest mixtape ever. 30 for 30%, the greatest mixtape ever now streaming on ESPN+. To where the cowboys star on my helmet continue the legacy of greatness. I do. Anything known to man to get in a Super Bowl. When you hear that, as I said, you either love or hate the cowboy fans, and it's usually warm in my heart when I hear that. How about them cowboys? All right, what's this cowboys offense gonna be next season with expectations, sky high as usual, healthy deck? Noah Murray Cooper, CD lamb, number one, new pieces on the O line, but that's the guy we've got this video of Zeke. How can he contribute in a major way? Here's more from McCarthy. Well, I think the biggest thing with Zeke is he's completely healthy now and he said a tremendous all season. I mean the weight that he's been pushing in the weight room. Just numbers that he's been cranking out have been very, very impressive. I can't stand to tell you it's been the best of his career, but he's in top shape and at the end of the day he's extremely instinctive, tough, smart football player, great teammate. So I think he's definitely has set himself up for that. Look away at cowboys fans, I'm sorry about this over the last 5 years, Ezekiel Elliott's rushes and yards per game averages have gone way down. While some of its due to his timeshare with Tony tallard is worth noting, Zeke had only three rushes for at least 20 yards last year, 26 players had more. My goodness. Now some of the other numbers that matter here, Robert, woody bakes on his paycheck. Those numbers are a big reason why we have these high expectations, but you saw those numbers, the bad ones is the criticism that Zeke has faced following his decline fair. Laura, no, the criticism isn't fair, but life isn't fair. And this is what you sign up for when you're a professional football player. You look at those numbers and you saw how his Russia is also decreased. And I think that the cowboys need to make this two back system with Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard, the focal point of their offense. Don't get past happy and the only way they can do that is if they strengthen up their offensive line. Zeke was running behind a banged up offensive line last year. He himself was banged up as he played the majority of the season with a hurt knee and he's still finished 6th in touchdowns with ten and 7th in the league in Russian yards. Now I know they're not paying him to be 6th and 7th. They're paying him to be number one, but you can't discredit what he did after having to play behind 7 different rotations on that offensive line, but the cowboys need to feature Tony Pollard a little bit more, but don't take his don't take Zeke's touches away, give them both more touches. So I agree with Robert that you want to give both of these guys touches. However, at the end of the day, they paid Zeke. They paid the running back. This is Robert's point to life as unfair. Yeah, he's healthy now, but fans don't want to hear about it. Did you step on the field last year? Oh, you were on the field last year. We weren't hearing about injuries last year. Now it's, oh, well, I was hurt last year. So that's all true. But from the fan base with when you have the star on your helmet, you don't want to hear any of that because Jerry Jones is only thinking about Super Bowl. So the fans, they may be delusional, they may be crazy. They have all that belief in the cowboys they want to see results and production. And if Zeke is making that much money, don't tell me about the offensive line. Because they paid the running back. I think that's the reality of the situation. We're going to have to talk a little more about that offensive line though. Sorry to say, Jeff, you heard Robert mentioned that they were injured last season. Now there's been some changes on this online. What's your level of concern about the cowboys O line this season? Very concerned. Listen, Lyle Collins going, right? You got Williams got so they're making movies, but this was not a physical football team at the end of last season. If you think about Kellen Moore, they run 11 personnel all the time. So then they say they want to use one running back one tight end and spread it out with receivers. Well, if you have Pollard and Elliot put both those guys in at the same point of the game, Paula can split out, you can start them at a receiver. He's fully capable of making plays out there, put him back in motion. Now you got two backs in the backfield, Zeke is an excellent blocker if it is pat protection. There's a number of different ways to get creative. But let me just say this. There's plenty of blame to go around for how they fell apart towards the latter part of the season. And that was offensive line was soft. They weren't running the ball effectively behind their pads and dak Prescott wasn't playing great. So if you can give them all credit or all blame, however you look at it, but I am of the same mindset of RG three here. Ezekiel, it's still a very good running back. You give him enough touches. He will produce the yards. I still think he's above four, four and a half yards per carry rusher. I think he'll get back to that this season. Yeah, and it doesn't have to be. Let him eat, right? Robert, it doesn't have to be right guys that you say, well, Zeke can't do anything just because Tony Pollard can, right? Like, maybe these two things can be true at the same time. And one of the things Robert that was interesting is we heard throughout many camp. They were talking about Tony running routes. And we're not sitting here saying he's got some advanced route tree. Amari Cooper gone, you got to think CD lamb, is that guy that's going to be moving into that number one spot, but as you think about their weapons, you think about CD lamb's role. Is he a true number one in your mind, Robert? Yeah, Laura CD lamb is a true number one, and he's going to go out and prove it. He has everything that you look for out of those types of guys. He can separate. He's got strong hands. He understands the route tree and the number one thing for me was CD lamb is his confidence. When they asked him, hey, are you ready to be the number one guy? He said, I been ready. And I would say this. He's been ready because a ready man don't have to get ready. He stays ready. And I think he's going to have a big focal point for this cowboys offense and also Tony Pollard will be on the field. I think Jeff, we talked about this before. He needs to be on the field at the same time as Ezekiel Elliott, and that way you can maximize everything for this offense. Oh, a 100%. And listen, you're talking about a CD lamb. Really, he was the one last year. Amari Cooper may have been on the field, but you saw the way he and dak could never find that rhythm. They could never find that big play. It seemed like every time they needed something CD lamb stepped up and made those plays. No different. Listen, then Tony Pollard, his role. He is a very explosive running back to have both those guys on the field. He and Ezekiel simultaneously, I think puts defenses in a very bad position. How are they going to cover? They can go to nickel, or they're going to have this guy walk out, try to cover power, all those questions have to be answered. You get into significant strategy issues and so again, this goes back to killing more. How can I get my best 11 on the field? I think Pollard and Elliott are two of the best 11. Get them on the field as much as you can. Jeff, yes or no? Cowboys win the NFC east? Oh. I think I do think so. I think so nobody's picking the eagles. It's kind of the, you know, the hot thing I think that I think the cowboys find a way though. Robert, yes or no? Cowboys? Yes, cowboys win the east. All right, cool..

"Had some thoughts on that subject, too. Y'all know that ain't happening. We gotta ask. Y'all know that. Don't tire though. This is full circle. Yeah, but you know, in terms of putting the helmet on and running out of the tunnel and playing ball and stuff like that, man, you know, he's moved on, we've moved on. Right. We could sit around and chop that up and pretend like that's a realistic conversation. But we all know that's not realistic, man. Oh. You know, hey, Jeff, so the one funny thing about this is that the way this question was asked was actually more about him retiring a stealer, but either way, how about the honesty from Tomlin on this one about Antonio Brown? We could do the entire show on top of it and never run out of material. He is a thing of beauty. And listen, he's being real. He's like this dude, you know, as far as Sean goes, he can come back, say, hey, I'm gonna retire one day and sign a piece of paper. And do they putting on the helmet again? And he understood that. I just love how really is on both fronts. AB did a ton for that organization, respect to that, but also he knows everybody's moved on. I just love the way he approaches it and answers it. Just a thing of beauty. It was good stuff. All right, of course, Tomlin was also asked about life without Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers quarterback situation. Here he is on that, Kenny Pickett, Mitchell trubisky. We're also not allocating a damn money that we allocated at the position in the past. And so there's a redistribution of the money. And so it better be a redistribution to the playmaking. Scary. But exciting. The standard is a standard. And so, yeah, it's like McDonald's, right? You know what a number one is. It don't matter where you go. What corner of the globe, the number one is the number one, and that's what I want Pittsburgh to the football to be. Already again, if you have not checked out the pivot, you just got to watch the entire interview. And there's a whole bunch more that's really, really great too. But let's talk about the key for the Steelers to stay successful without Big Ben. What does it look like? More balance. Listen, when you think about the last couple of years with Big Ben, they're past to run ratio was 40 passes to 24 runs. That is way out of bounds. I understand they were trying to dink and dunk. They spread it out. That is not what Mike Tomlin, that's not the standard of the standard. The standard of standards when they won the Super Bowl, they were 31 passes to 28 runs. That's a very balanced offense. They want to they want to control time of possession. They want a shortened how many times each team can take contains the ball. They understand how they win. And that's through defense. And if you look at where the money is allocated, he may mention that in the interview, that money's on defense, Laura, he wants to win through defense and play and sound offense. Nothing explosive, just do your job, play great defense, and don't underestimate this dealer team. Everybody's overlooking them in AFC north. This team has a good shot as anybody in that division. Yeah, they made minka Fitzpatrick the highest paid safety in the league and rightfully so that was something. I'm sure there was a high priority for Tomlin as well as the ownership too or the front office. All right, but Robert, let's get back to quarterback here. Who should their quarterback be? The question is perfect there because who should be their quarterback? It should be Kenny Pickett. When I went and worked out with him before the draft, I got to see how maniacal of a worker he is. This dude has been training like a pro for 6 years at the test academy in New Jersey. He can make every single throw I watched him do it in person. I threw with him. He can run. He's way more athletic than people give him credit for. And for the people out there who say he's hit his ceiling already, well, that's one heck of a ceiling. Look at these stats, passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions. He broke all of Dan Marino's records, so I think the quarterback should be Kenny Pickett, but who do I think it will be? I think it'll be Mitchell trubisky because they paid him a little bit of money and it allows Kenny Pickett to continue to grow and that we have to remember that even Ben Roethlisberger didn't start as a rookie when he came out and he did play very fast into his career, but he still sat on the bench behind both Tommy Maddox and Charlie batch. Yeah, I mean, news flash, a great points, Robert, this league is hard. So even if you're really talented, Gordon Ramsay even have great pieces around you. It's not going to just happen overnight. Kimberly, what have you heard to that point about the Steelers quarterback competition in mini camp? Yeah, to Robert's point, they're very high on Kenny Pickett, but so far in practices, there have been up and down days. He looks exactly what he is, a rookie, and that's no shade at the kid. This is what you expect. He is new to the NFL, but the Steelers are new to him if anybody had more Intel on Kenny Pickett, it's the Steelers. So there's a reason he was taken at 20. I agree with Robert, I think we all understand that Mitchell trubisky, given his veteran experience, would be the obvious choice. I know Tom said it's going to be a fierce competition all that. We all expect Mitchell trubisky to get the starting job. The question, though, is how long Mitchell trubisky can keep the job. Because I don't think you draft can he pick it at 20 in the first round. If you don't think he's capable, at least sometime at this point in the season, starting for you. Yeah, you know, it's interesting, just a little flashback to the draft. Remember a lot of us thought that Malik Willis would have been higher on some of these people's boards. A lot of us put him to the Steelers. His dealer said, no, we're going to go with the guy that we know really well. The hit player who's been in our facility who were very familiar with. And it makes me think Robert is you're talking about throwing with Kenny Pickett. I just had this crazy idea. Like, should we get all of our quarterbacks at ESPN out here and just get you guys throwing around and see who throws the best balls? 'cause I would have my money on offer. It's not a lie. We know that. I would love. I would love to do that. That's a good idea. Fun. Jeff, do you want to bring in and moderate the whole thing and call these guys out when they throw it? Absolutely. You can snap it. You know what I mean? I'd love to take some snapshots. That's true. All right, so this is happening. It's official, even if I have to host it in my backyard. All right, we got something new on NFL live. You've got to see this. Rob Gronkowski tweeting out and for those of you who are like, oh, he's coming out of retirement. No, it's not that. He says, be careful, Tom doesn't like to lose this from a tweet from Tom palace. Saying retirement scoreboard Rob Gronkowski too, Tom Brady won. So watch out as Brady gonna retire and come back again. Oh my goodness, I'm not sure if I can take it. We do so many retirement specials and people come out of retirement. We don't have no airspace for all this. Coming up next, something NFL live, Zeke was the first of this cowboys team to get paid, but as he shouldering too much of the blame. We take a look at that offense and Jeff Saturn, he's going to tell you why he thinks Zeke and Tony Pollard should both be.

"Mahomes over the middle. Caught tightly killing the 45 angry 40, 35 Gina 25 20 ten 5 touchdown breaking news happened within the last half hour, tyreek hill leaving Kansas City, headed to Miami. Tour of petrol home, obviously, like I'm a do it one 5 and the strongest arm. As far as accuracy wise, I'm going with two all day. I wanted to hit me right in the bread basket. Just like I did in the Buffalo Bills game until you get 70. I'm surprised a little and I'm sure it had something to do with trying to get his podcast. Some stuff and get it growing. You kind of let other people talk about who's the best and all that different type of stuff. You just want to go out there and wait football games the other day. Out here with the hot takes on the podcast. Anyway, Patrick Mahomes took over as a starter in Kansas City in 2018. Since then, no quarterback to receiver combination has produced more 40 yard plays than mahomes to Tyreke Hill. Number two on the list, interesting as Marquez Valdez scantling has joined the chiefs in the off season you see him there with the packers before. And he may see some of those downfield targets in Kansas City that tyreek hill saw. So Robert, how do you think Patrick Mahomes will play this season without Tyree kill? It's going to be better. And I know that might be shocking because you see that graphic there. Tyreek hill is such a dynamic player and the chiefs understood that so they didn't replace him with just one guy. They went out and got juju Smith Schuster. They went out and got the second guy on that last graphic. Marquez valdes scantling from the packers and then they drafted sky more. On the back end they got Josh Gordon. They have Corey Coleman and Justin Ross amongst a bunch of other receivers in that room that are all trying to make the roster. And because of the variability that they're gonna have at the position now, they're gonna be better in mahomes will be less prolific, but he will be better and more efficient in his career without tyreek hill, which is a 5 game sample. He has a 103.1 QB rating and he's throwing 8 touchdowns to only one interception. So he can be better without being without being as prolific and in Jeff, I want to say this to you, you got to remember they still got Andy Reid and Travis Kelce there. So coaching is definitely going to play a part. What do you think? Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. Listen, if Andy Reid showed you anything in his career, he could put points up. He understands how to now tag on Eric, the enemy who's calling the plays in Kansas City, Patrick Holmes these guys will be absolutely lights out. Well, they miss him to a degree. Sure, just like any other player that moves on and goes elsewhere, but this will not slow down this offense. And here's the other part. Protection beats coverage every time. They have invested heavily in this offensive line. They saw what happened in that Super Bowl when everybody was injured in mahomes running for their life. So what they do, they retooled that offensive line. They were much better last year. They will be better this year, which gives mahomes time and he will pick you apart. That man is skillful and talented. And again, will it be a loss? Yes, Bill, be substantial. I don't think so either. I agree with RG three there. This is what we like having the O lineman on the show because he gives some love to those big fellows. Also in the studio here, you know, I'm looking at juju Smith Schuster right here on our monitor here too. I mean, another thing that Patrick Mahomes has called out here even in camp Kimberly is saying, just having these bigger bodied receivers, maybe not necessarily a slight at tyreek hill, but I guess it could be looked at that way. What do you think his frame of mind is looking at this offense without hill? I think Patrick Mahomes will look at it as a challenge, which is what I assume he should look at it as, you know, I don't know what this offense will look like when all is said and done. But I know two things for certain. It was ridiculous that people were writing off this chiefs team last year when Patrick Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the game and two, this is a perfect opportunity for this new look chiefs team to reestablish themselves as the team to beat because we talk so much about the Chargers and the Broncos and the Raiders and all the additions when we talk about what the chiefs are the subtractions. Oh, nope, no tyreek hill. Think about when that trade went down. We were like, what is going on in Kansas City? But now here's an opportunity. You mentioned Laura juju Smith Schuster coming off of injury in a disappointing time in Pittsburgh. There were high hopes for him there. This is really an opportunity for them to establish themselves and for some new weapons to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes. There's nothing better than that. Yeah, it's a good point by you that we are talking about who they've lost, but they've also added a lot of people and a lot of different types of weapons. No doubt their offense is going to look a lot different. All right, now to some heartbreaking news, Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Jalen Ferguson has died at the age of 26. The team said in a statement, he was a kind, respectful young man with a big smile and infectious personality. We express our heartfelt condolences to Jalen's family and friends as we mourn a life lost much too soon. Ferguson, known as sack daddy coming out of Louisiana tech was a third round pick by the ravens in 2019 and our hearts go out to his family and friends. Mike Tomlin edition, he was on the pivot this week with our colleague Ryan Clark great podcast, by the way, if you haven't checked it out, he had some thoughts on coaching philosophy. Listen to this. I love coaches that resist the responsibility of coaches. That talk negatively about a dude that can't learn and bubba, man, if everybody could learn, we need less coaches. Yeah. Right. If the group didn't need management, then we wouldn't make as much. I don't run away from coaching. I run two coaching. Not many better than Tomlin. Robert, what do you think of what he said on developing players there? Yeah, first of all, love Mike Tomlin and his point is that your job as a coach is to meet the players where they're at. If they have difficulty learning, then you have to find the way that they learn because a good coach helps the player see what they can be, not what they are, and I think that's what Mike Tomlin is saying. It is your job to get through to these guys because they're so talented and can help you win games. Well said by Tomlin and by you Robert steelers also added Brian Flores to their coaching staff this off season after Flores did not receive a head coaching job. Here's what Tomlin said on how that process unfolded. In the early stages of our interaction, I wouldn't even have thought of broaching the subject. Because I just thought that had been disrespectful to his talents. Because I thought this dude is head coach capable and they would hear jobs available. And so I won't have in conversations with this dude about being anything other than that. Okay. When the opportunity started to dry up, is when the conversation changed. I think that was my general attitude. Like, no, I'm not going to let this do sit out. Kimberly, what did you think of how Tomlin handled the Flores hiring? The kudos around Clark for this interview, but when we credit Bruce Arians for his purposeful hiring, this is an example of that. And what I love about what Mike Tomlin said was this was not a favor to one of his boys. He said in this podcast, I haven't really no flow like that. We were cool, but like, hey, nice to meet you. But once he saw that he was almost naive, he thought that he thought that floors would get an opportunity and when he did it, he said, this is too big. This guy is too talented. He has to be on my roster because he's that good coach, not a guy doing a favor for one of his friends. Yeah, it hits you when he basically said he thought it'd be disrespectful to offer him an assistant job because he's such a high caliber coach. All right, this also happened on the pivot podcast, Antonio Brown tweeted on May 16th that he, quote, just wants to retire a steeler. Tomlin.

"Think this is a team that really has to be reckoned with. You have a new staff. I know he's been a defense coordinator, but a new head coach. You lost too offensive lineman. There's a lot of other areas that have to be adjusted. They won't start as fast, but toward the latter part of the season, they'll get back in stride. And you never know. Grok might be back. Tom Brady's persuasive dude makes that call. October, that did mighty suit in the back up. I'm glad Jeff says that. Because Laura, I will partake in this discussion because it's on the rundown, but no, I will not believe that this is the end for granted. No, no, because the last time he retired, I wrote a farewell column, I am not falling for it again. But think about the situation that Brady now finds himself in. He's a guy, 44 years old, who retired, wasn't sure if playing the game still was what he wanted to do. 41 days later, he was like, psych, I'm back. Now he is 5 weeks away from returning to training camp without one of his top receivers in Chris Godwin who's injured, and now bronk, who is his who is and has always been his safety blanket. And when he talks about Gronk, it's not just Frank knows exactly what I'm thinking. It's Gronk brings fun to the game. Yeah. And when you're 44 years old and you needed that mental, okay, we're about to do it one more time. Let's go. And that guy, that silly guy that bro dude isn't there to inject some of that. I think we're going to see he's going to miss him in the red zone, but also in the locker room and on the field. Yeah, and it wasn't. I mean, to your point that he's just a silly guy, right? He did so much. In that red zone to be clutch. Okay, let's say though, rubber that he really doesn't come back. You said, because Gronk's not there, no longer are the bucks, the favorites in the NFC. So I want to put you on the spot here really quick. Who are the favorites? What would you put at the top or they still in your top three? How would you sort of explain all that? Yeah, Laura, like I said, the books are still a really, really, really good football team. So they are in my top three, but the number one team in the NFC is going to be the Los Angeles Rams. To be the champ, you got to beat the champ. And now that the bucks don't have Rob Gronkowski, it puts the rams back in the forefront of that of that conference. Yeah, it makes a lot of sense. And listen, there's a whole lot more of these people coming your way on NFL live today. So keep it locked right here. Here why Robert thinks a lot of the shortcomings in Arizona fall on the shoulders of cliff Kingsbury and what he needs to do to keep the Cardinals in playoff contention and later, steelers head coach Mike Tomlin gets started on the pivot podcast, co hosted by.

"Welcome to NFL live all kinds of topics to get to today. Rob Gronkowski announced his second retirement from the NFL a day ago, so what does Tom Brady look like without his security blanket? Someone here will tell you who's under the most pressure on that buck's offense. Plus, Mike Tomlin spoke about life after Big Ben and the Steelers QB battle, one of our analysts today, making a case for Kenny Pickett to get the start he'll explain why also why Z can Tony Pollard on the field at the same time could be the best option for Jack Prescott and that cowboys offense. It's all coming your way on NFL live. We're so glad you're with us here today. And we have Kimberly Martin in the studio. So good to see Kimberly glad to have you. She's got a lot of updates coming y'all's way that you don't want to miss. Plus Jeff Saturday and Robert Griffin the third with you for the hour, as I mentioned, there's a lot to get to today. Let's begin with a big story in the NFL. There was a congressional hearing today on the commander's toxic workplace environment Dan Snyder did not attend yesterday. The Washington Post reported new details from a woman who settled with the team previously. Here's representative Carolyn maloney today on Snyder's absence. We also invited Daniel Snyder to testify today. But rather than show up and take responsibility for his actions, he chose to skip town. Apparently mister Snyder is in France, where he has docked his luxury yacht near a resort town. That should tell you just how much respect he has for women in the workplace. Roger Goodell, whose father Charles was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate spent much of the morning testifying on Zoom before the House oversight committee. Here's what he had to say. I have not seen a workplace in the NFL that is anywhere near what we saw in the context of that period of time for the Washington commanders. Yes or no, are you willing to do more? Yes, of course I'm willing to do more. I never said that we were going to stop. I actually said the opposite. You won't continue. Be removed as a team owner. You can recommend ladies time has expired. The gentleman may answer her question. Your time is expired, you may answer a question. Should dance? Remove him. Well, you remove him. I don't have the authority to remove him. Congresswoman. So you get a feel for what that was like today as tisha Thompson joins us now. She's covering the hearing for us. Tisha, where does this go from here? Well, you just saw representative Carolyn maloney, who's a Democrat from New York who chairs the committee. And she announced during the hearing that she is going to subpoena Dan Snyder for a deposition she announced that will take place next week. We're waiting to see if that actually happens. But that's a big move. That's been a move that's been anticipated over the course of this 8 month investigation. It started in October. This morning, representative maloney also released a 28 page memo along with about 650 pages of depositions to the public for the first time revealing a lot of details of what they have found during their investigation. And is accused Snyder and his attorneys of essentially running what she called a shadow investigation where he was trying to investigate 50 former employees that he suspected might have spoken to The Washington Post as part of its original investigation into sexual misconduct in 2020. And the memo goes into great detail about various ways that the committee investigators allege that Snyder and his lawyers went about getting personal information from those former employees. Thanks so much to all of that information. We'll continue to keep an eye on this. And a reminder once again, Dan Snyder not present at today's congressional hearing. Let's bring in Kimberly Martin here. Kim, what did you take away from today's hearing? Laura, I used to cover this team back in 2018 and my introduction to Dan Snyder. I was told, do not look at him if you see him in the hallway. Do not speak to him. He does not speak. He's like that with his employees as well. So none of this actually surprises me. My question, though, is how much more do we have to hear? We have The New York Times cheerleading story. We have The Washington Post Washington Post stories. And now we have this memo detailing him intimidating witnesses alleging that he's intimidated, witnesses, and it's not surprising, unfortunately. And Roger Goodell said something I found interesting. It's the one thing that we know for a shadow of a doubt is true. He does not have the authority to remove him. So my question is for the owners, the other 32 owners, what is the tipping point for you? Because the Washington wants us to understand that things are better with Dan Snyder taking a back seat. But clearly with him at the head, they are still issues from the past that keep being dragged into the public forum right now. And that's where this team is. Yeah, that's a really important clarification there. The Goodell made multiple times a day. This is on the owners to make this removal. Here is a statement from the Washington commanders that came out just a short time ago. They said, while we respect the committee's desire to learn more about how workplace culture issues can be addressed, some of the comments in the media have portrayed our team in a harsh and negative manner that does not reflect who we are as an organization today. Nor do they acknowledge that for the past two years, we have been dedicated to making much needed, meaningful changes to our workplace culture and improving our diversity, equity, and including practices team wide. Importantly, we recognize that none of these changes could have occurred and been maintained so carefully without all of you. Again, that is the statement from the commanders and from the Snyder family as well. Tanya and Dan Snyder as well as Jason Wright. We'll keep an eye on this story. We'll continue to bring you all the latest news as we get to more news here today on NFL live. Rob Gronkowski retired. He says he's hanging it up again. One of the best to ever do it is retiring. He said he's given the game all he has for the moment. So Tom Brady, who came out of retirement, a 101 days ago is now without one of his favorite targets. And since entering the league in 2010, only Jason Witten and Greg Olson have played more offensive snaps than Rob Gronkowski. He's got over 7000 plays of experience. Look at the rest of the Buccaneers tight end group right here. Cameron braid and experienced player, but the rest of that room pretty new to the pro game. Some names on there you may not recognize, and you see offense and snap while the zeros there. So Robert, you said yesterday that grog is the greatest tight end of all time without him. Are you concerned about the bucks at that tight end position? Oh, 100%. Anytime you lose the greatest tight end of all time, you're gonna be concerned about the rest of the guys that are left behind. So it's gonna be a lot more pressure on Cameron brake and Kate oton, The Rookie they just drafted out of Washington who has a similar skill set to Rob Gronkowski, but none of them are Rob Gronkowski. And the numbers are undeniable about how much of an impact Gronk has had, not only on Brady, but the bucks offense. They've been a top 5 red zone offense the last two years when Gronk is on the field and Brady has thrown 48 touchdowns and zero interceptions when Gronk is simply on the field in the red zone the past two seasons. So they're gonna have to get more out of the rest of their roster, but this is still gonna be a really, really good football team. They're just no longer the NFC favorites because they don't have Rob Gronkowski in the fold right now. Oh. Listen, I agree with Robert here. I mean, you know, when you think about how good rob he has been with Tom Brady, the large majority in the past 5 years has been red zone. When you think about what he's capable of doing and that's just because of reps in time together. When you think about these two, how many reps have they thrown in spring? How many reps have they thrown in summer? And then you get to the season and you see these things and they just look phenomenal. It looks like it's so rehearsed. It's as well orchestrated as can possibly get. That's what he's going to miss. But the reality is it's going to be in the red zone. This is still a top three NFC team and to RG three's point. I.

"You probably would, but it wouldn't be indicative of anything. Thank you. Thank you, coach. There's the common decency. You were just referring to moments ago. I appreciate being on the business end of that. What about the taunting rule? Did you like the way that it was adjudicated last year? Coach Tom. I did. I think it was called 61 times. I think we reviewed them all. I think it was four that we wish that we wish hadn't been called. Obviously, those four or 5 get a lot of the attention. But you can't argue with the spirit of what we're trying to get done, we need to own the responsibility that comes with being great examples for young people that are involved in the game. One of those that you wish wasn't called was that cassius marsh of the bears staring at your bench. Was that one of them? I reserved my opinion because I was directly involved, but other members of the committee were really comfortable with the way that play was officiated. Was he staring at you? Is that what you're saying, Mike? Was he staring at you? Cassius Smosh? He probably was. Okay, very good. Before I let you go, sir, what about you? You're now entering your 16. How are you a different coach now than you were when you first took the reins in Pittsburgh like Tom? What about you? You know, I'm smarter, but smarter because of scars, you grow and oftentimes growth is usually associated with failure. And so I've experienced a lot over the last 15 years and hopefully I'm better for it and hope that I can apply those lessons learned to the crop that I'm working with this year. I know that that's always the goal, I better be continually getting better in the same ways that we challenge our players to do the similar things. And we always hear when you're talked about coach and you probably hear it yourself, is that you're a player's coach that you're somebody that knows how to relate to the NFL players of today. What is your philosophy on that? Mike Tomlin that you can share. You know, I just I have a bunch of individual relationships. I don't try to treat people to sing. That's an impossibility. I try to treat people the way they deserve to be treated. And so I have a bunch of individual relationships and there's something to manage, but as they say, that's why they pay me the big bucks. And how much longer do you want to do it? What do you think? 'cause I know people probably knocking on your door with certainly your way of communicating is so unique. And so excellent in your way to boil things down. So simply is perfect for broadcasting. I'll be very honest with you. What about how much longer you want to maybe keep doing this, Mike Thomas? You know, I love what I do. And so I'm singularly focused in that way. I hear some of that chatter, but it doesn't move my needle. The challenges that this job holds does and it does continually I'm fired up each and every day and I'm just thankful to have the opportunity to have the compete in the ultimate competitive league. Well, I want to thank you not just for calling into the show, but you provide, I don't know if you were aware of this. You provide this show with some of the greatest sound bites that we keep playing over and over and over again. Coach Mike Tomlin, especially this one with the USC job that can never say never, but never. That's fantastic. Did that come off the top of your dome? Or did you say when you walked to the podium, you knew you were going to get asked that? And that was going to be your answer. Mike Tomlin. It kind of came to me. I probably shouldn't have been as ignored as I was, but this game was, man. I get single. We focused on real challenges, man. I was just annoyed by the line of questioning. I mean, that's truly one of my favorite quotes of all time. It's never say never, but that's the way to shut the door. That's the way to shut the door. I didn't want to follow up question. If my memory serves, you didn't get one, did you? So don't miss an accomplished. Well, I appreciate that that's not your sense when you see my request for you to call into the show. So always appreciate that coach Tomlin and I look forward to the next time. And when I see you again, thank you. Much respect to you, sir. I just always appreciate the way you present what it is that we do and support what it is that we do. Thank you. Right back at you, coach Tomlin. Thanks so much. You'd be well, best your family, and we'll chat down the line. Thanks for calling. No doubt. Take care. You got it. That's Mike Tomlin, everybody. At coach Tomlin. On Twitter. There you go. I went through the end zone, took a hit. Took a hit, and they liked the overtime is stupid. Sorry. Well, no, but the taunting, I'm not a fan of the taunting rule. One of those flags that they wish wasn't thrown, I need to find that out. I got to get on the horn here and find out what those were. What those four and 5 four or 5 plays. One of them had to have been. I hated the cassius marsh one. As he said, probably was staring at him. Because he was caught by the stones..

"We played, I think, four rookies on offense last year because they were deserving. So you think Pickett has a shot to start at the position this fall. You would say. Yeah, I don't want to overstate it rich, but certainly he's not going to be excluded from the opportunity. Mike Tomlin here on the rich eisen show. Let's talk about your role on the competition committee. Were you in favor of the new overtime rule? Coach Mike Tomlin? And I'm an overtime purist. I am the rest of the committee laughed at me when the discussion comes up because I'm a sudden death guy. And always have been, but I lost that battle, maybe a decade ago. I just believe if you played 60 minutes of football, all the teams have had a legitimate opportunity to state their case for winning the game and I'm just trying to land the plane as quickly as possible after that. And so I try to keep that simple spirit and that simple component of it, but obviously based on what has transpired something needed to be done relative to last year and I was for what we decided, but largely when you're talking about the subject of overtime in spirit, I'm a sudden death guy. What do you mean they were laughing at you? Who laughs at Mike Tomlin in a competition tomorrow? What are you talking about? They were laughing at you. I get laughed at often rich. I'm with you though, where purists too were purists to, I'm with you, because in the same playoff last year, and I know you were referring to in light of what happened between the bills and the chiefs next week, chiefs and overtime again got the ball first again, but the Bengals picked him off in a way that the bills couldn't. The next week it was a different outcome, but the same scenario. So I'm with you as well, that said, what do you think you would do? I understand, I'm sure there's many different permutations that you and your staff will look at. Don't you think it would be better now to get the ball second in overtime as opposed to getting it first, even though getting it first would give you guarantee you an extra possession if you are all square after the first, go around, coach. I think the conventional approach moving forward is going to be to play second. So you know the parameters of your decision making. Certainly. And I'm sorry this phone is beeping. Can you guys hear that? It's a little bit. Don't worry about it. It's okay. I just thought maybe you were in a submarine. Don't worry about it. It's okay. I think the power I'm on a cordless and I got an IT guy coming in here to fix it. Do you guys want us to call you right back? Yeah, let's do that. Do that. Go ahead. We got a guy coming in here right now. Okay, very good. Mike Tomlin, everybody, on a cordless phone that needs charging. This is amazing. Mike Tomlin can coach anything for me, man. I just love anything. I do love Mike Tomlin. What was the red barn if you have red paint? You paint the barn. You have red paint. You paint the bar. I mean, I guess it's like with whatever you have. That's what you use to do whatever your job is. Simple, right? Simple concept, you know? We have a lot of blue here, so we have our color scheme is blue. So we have blue paint. You paint the barn blue. Yeah, we paint the graphics blue because we have blue paint. That's what we do around here. I think he's calling back. Do you think it's going to be a good do we get it fixed? IT guy coming in and we get the coach. Let's take him. You back? We're back. It's like you're sitting next to me. It's like you sitting next to me. So you were saying it's getting the ball second is now going to be you think the way to go in overtime. So what you're saying? I would imagine I would imagine that everyone's probably going to take that approach so that they have a clear understanding of what the parameters are in terms of their decision making. Right, because you want to, if you've got to go for it, if you get the ball first, you're not going on it on fourth and 7 from your own 25, right? I mean, you're going to punt and play defense. If you get the ball second and you know you have to score, of course you're going to go for it fourth and 7 on your own 25. This is an unintended consequence. I don't know. It's no question. And that's why I always bring up the subject of unintended consequences and why firmly remain dying on the hill of sudden death overtime that I died on a year a decade ago. So I know, I know I might be putting a crimp in my plan here that I've been constantly been pounding the table for, but you are on the competition committee, and I'm going to take my shot here. I think we should change the rule that if you fumble into and through the end zone, the ball goes to the defense, there should be some sort of a reverse touchback. Or a ten yard penalty in the team that fumbles through the end zone still gets the ball from the same down, but maybe not the same distance, what do you think, Mike Tomlin?.

"A friend of the program rich. Thank you. You say what it is you do. Thank you so much. I believe it or not, we were just talking about I was at Dave Chappelle's comedy show last night, coach, and how he takes his takes your cell phones away. Like you can not have your cell phone. I've got to put it in a pouch just to go into the arena. Do you do that with your players? No? Did you take their phones away? No, no, no. We're so far beyond that technology is such a component of what we do. Guys take pictures of the notes on the board with their phones, et cetera. It's just a part of our life. So because I'm just wondering if they don't dare do anything untoward now anymore with you. I'm sure. So we just proceed with the assumption that they utilize it for professional purposes. I love that. Okay, let's get into the football part of this conversation then coach you and I spoke along with my colleagues on NFL network the other day about your quarterback room now with Kenny Pickett in it. So let's get to Kenny Pickett and what you liked about him and why you chose him 20th overall in the draft, coach. You know, first of all, he had a couple elements elements of his game that were really attractive. We were talking about the quarterback position. His ability to anticipate and his professional level accuracy. Oftentimes, the college guys have a ways to go and those areas. And when we talk about someone having a high floor to quarterback position, usually it's because they're pro ready in those areas. And he was, we also had the proximity angle and we just had a bird's eye view of his growth and development not only as a player, but as a person, as a leader. And he does the things that come that comes with the quarterback position in a very natural way. Whether it's dealing with and leading teammates, whether it's media responsibilities and so forth, none of that appears to be a chore for him, it happens in a very natural way. And I think that's an asset to him. So the first time you ever saw him would be when you would stroll into Patton or doozies office practice across the way there in Pittsburgh. Is that the first time? Yeah, we run across those guys quite a bit in passing in particular. Just being neighborly. Over time, you learn who the quarterback is and so forth. And so you can say, hey, good luck this week and things of that nature. And so he and I had an opportunity really over the course of three or four years to establish a real friendly and formal relationship and kind of get to know each other without the speed date and component of the draft process. Now, as you know, we in the media and certainly tell evaluation community, we can get stuck on the details and the nitty Gritty and things that may or may not be of importance. What was your take on the whole idea that his hands are too small to perform in the NFL? Coach. I potentially was capable of buying into that if I didn't watch him play college football in Pittsburgh and deal with the elements that comes with playing in this environment. And so, you know, you can get into the hand size thing or you can just look at how he performed in a variety of conditions and we have those conditions here in Pittsburgh. And so there's very little speculation from our perspective about how he might handle the ball in a inclement weather wet days, et cetera. They play North Carolina here on a Thursday night. I actually went to the game and it was raining pretty good that night had no issues. And so it was probably less of an issue for us as it was just in terms of some of the draft chatter. So now he hits a quarterback room with mason Rudolph and Mitchell trubisky and how do you expect the competition to go? What are you expecting? I expected to be fierce because I know I know all three guys. I don't expect anyone to take a back seat. The challenge is from a structure standpoint, man. Are we providing enough of a platform for all the guys to show what they're capable of and so that's going to be the challenge component of it. I'm excited about watching these guys compete man just like I am at any position where you got some viable options. And so we'll proceed with that understanding that it's going to be challenging from an organization standpoint, but it's a good challenge and I'm excited about watching those guys perform. And then in just in terms of a level of expectation, as you as a head coach, there's a large conversation going on in the NFL media over the last 24 hours at Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee. Again, I know that's not your house. When talking about Malik Willis saying, it's not his job to mentor Malik Willis, and then of course you have your own experience with Roethlisberger back in the day when you drafted mason Rudolph saying that if he asked me a question, I might just have to point to the playbook. What is your level of expectation for trubisky and Rudolph with Pickett in the room to get him up to speed? You know, it's good when it occurs. But it's certainly not necessary. That's why we have office of coordinators, quarterback coaches, assistant quarterback coaches, people are employed in their sole focus is the development of players. Certainly there's growth in development opportunities and learning opportunities among players, but it is definitely not their function. Their function is to have themselves ready to go and be good teammates. And I think that's probably what you speak to just in terms of providing common human decency and courtesy to someone if you can if you can help them along the way. I'm sure Ryan is open to that. But I think he was just state of the obvious that he's not employed to do that. He's employed to pay to play quarterback. Mike Tomlin here on the rich eisen show. George pickens a second round selection for you. And Kevin Colbert, who is now leaving his position, but still going to be around. You and he and the rest of the staff together have just had a remarkable run finding receivers that work for you in whatever system that you are running. How does pickens potentially fit into what you've been able to spot at that position over the last 15 some odd years, coach? You know, really, you know, first we acknowledge that they come in all shapes and sizes and they do. At that position probably more than any other. And then you looking for distinguishing traits and he has that. He's a big guy, 6 three plus with little guy, body control. His ability to change direction, his ability to stop and start his ability to drop his weight is like that of a much smaller man. And so that was the trait that really attracted us to him. He's a competitor. He's got easy hand eye and ball skills. And obviously that's a major component of the position as well. So when it all comes down to it, how open are you to a quarterback and wide receiver two rookies starting together at such an important connecting connective point? No, I'm open. I've learned to be when you got red paint. Man, you paid your barn red, man. If those guys are deserving, then we'll play them..

"Asked about najji harris An about he continues to expect him to just get better as he's going went into a lot of different things about harris and And and how he's grown and is a student of the game and everything so far and how he just expects that to just continue to grow he was also asked about. Possibly you know making improvements to the run game which was not what the steelers have wanted it to be the first two weeks About the use of of usage of derek watt as a fullback He acknowledged it's an option Some weeks he'll be used some weeks. He won't be used depending on the game plan. has nothing to do with him as a player coach. Tomlin said he also Used james is another example of this is that sometimes he'll be more involved or less involved in the game plan based on their week by week in their opponent also one thing where where he was Was asked about the sixty one yard touchdown and how make. If it's patrick said that it was totally on him coach. Tom said everyone was was culpable. On the sixty one yard touchdown including him. They need a better defensive call. They need to be more prepared. He says there's there's a lot of things that went into that play and that everybody needs to be better to keep those things from happening. He acknowledged that. Ben rothlisberger took too many hits And part of that he saying his getting behind the sticks making it obvious passing plays where they're having to get a further distance down the field which means they have to hold the ball longer Staying out of those situations where a team could just get back and go with their pass. Rush would be one thing that can help that He was asked a question about pat firm youth in his. How he's been getting more snaps than eric hebron He just acknowledged with firm ruth. You know he continues to grow and is doing a nice job already. And this'll be both short and long term his growth Will will continue to really help. His team was asked about the taunting penalties in the nfl. And there was you know one in the steelers game so far the number of had been across the league. He said he hasn't really paid attention to the rest of the league in those penalties. But he's basically saying players will adjust to it our players better adjust to it Because you can't be having that cost you An important spot of the game that the people understand what they what they can and can't do and we'll adjust accordingly He was asked a question about carlos davis because he was not mentioned at the beginning with injuries He said we'll see how he progresses too big chance for him to get some more playing time with With all alu on the Injury injured reserve list. Now and Brought up him and bugs. You got henry mondo the came off the practice squad and just various players the defensive line in there and the opportunities that they might see here specifically this week coach. Tomlin was not asked any questions about players on. I are because they're not eligible to return next week. Meaning those that were added right away like steph onto it like zach banner like anthony. Junior now was not the time to ask him those questions. Those will probably come next week. So was asked about. The communication between ben rothlisberger matt candidate so far this year two games and he says that that's been fine not a concern with them Was act was talk a little bit more about the groin. Injuries going on and the availability of those players. He says they are very player. Specific some players can come back. The injury itself is very specific. It might not be the same type of injury for one player to the next. He also acknowledged that with these players. Some players can play on less practice time than others i. I'm pretty sure the main person he's probably talking about there. Is someone like a joe. Aiden joe haden could possibly not practice all week and still be fine to play in the game on sunday. Tom did mention him. But i had a feeling. That's who he's he's talking about. was asked Two last questions he was asked about was about Jamir jones he says he's you know got thrust into more playing time. He said he's doing what young guys do You show a glimpse of what you can do and wait for your opportunity. So that's kind of what's going on with jones. He mentioned james pierre being in the same boat last year as an undrafted guy made the fifty three Things like that. So even though jones was actually the year before and didn't catch on with any teams last year that this was something that he did to just continue to try to work with his opportunity and last but not least coach. Tomlin was asked about If he had any conversation with trae turner and the incident that had him ejected from the last game. He said that There was there was no meeting of the two of them later. turner apologize to the team and how we let them down downwards him not being available. said coach. Tomlin said that he felt that that you know kinda wrapped up. Put a bow on that subject and it's ready to move on because of his You know he understands how these things work. He's a veteran. He knows the importance of being available during the game and not unavailable for those types of reasons so that wraps up coach tomlin's press conference I hope i had all the the major points therefore you hope it wasn't too many points candidate would leave anything out As as we see what the steelers are getting ready to do as they as they prepared to take on The bengals this week. I know they were breaking down film yesterday. The players were both their game in the bengals coach. Thomas says they're focusing a lot on this year's film because that's the players that are out there nuts since they have two games to work with to really see what they're they're going with and Practice will be out tomorrow so. Make sure that you're you're you're tuning back in sorry it's me again and not jeff hartman for those of you. That are used to that It just so right now happens to work out that that i have the availability to to to do this podcast for jeff right now when he couldn't get to a to a later time so and we wanted to get it out there in case you're driving home in your afternoon commute and saying Wha what what's we'd set about coach. Thomas press conference today. Let me check out. Bts's and see what they have to say. I'm glad that you're you came listened to us up. Be safe if you're on the road of course and and hopefully you're not dealing with too much traffic but for those stumbling on this. Otherwise make sure. You're checking out oliver.

"Las you roughly between six to eight weeks so allah won't be done for the year but we won't be seeing him for a significant portion of time after that He also talked about tj. What who had a another groin injury and missed the second. Half of the game is really unfortunate. Because tj watt was lighting it up in that first half Put together nicely game from cell once again and put up another sack on the sack column. The last injury the game happened on the last play of the game. That being deontay johnson. Who's helped off the field by two two members of the steelers team He is currently being evaluated for a knee injury. So hopefully that is not one. That's significant one but it didn't look too good On the field so hold their breath and we will get you that information as soon as we can over at pine the steel curtain dot com coach salman then kind of got into question periods. The first thing he was kind of asked about and then spoke on Was just the general sense of this game coach. Tomlin basically pointed at this group as a whole that needs to grow Most because there are so many new faces in in primary roles especially with all these injuries. A ton of rookies today They have to grow in their roles. You have to be more comfortable for being nfl players. And they have to take the next step because simply they are the next man up and they are the guys that are going to be in that lineup Coached allman was also asked about so that punt on fourth down about eight minutes left in the game and the steelers were down two scores. Whether or not you thought about going for it I it was a fourth in one rather Coach tomlin said they thought about it but they're comfortable putting the defense and position at to get the ball back. That's exactly what the defense did do now. After that chris boswell hit that heinz field record. Fifty six yard field goal The steelers would not get the ball back until about twenty seconds. Left in the game with an insurmountable score ahead of them so In a way the punt worked out but the playcalling after that did not coach. Tom was in once again. Asked about the the rugs touchdown and what they're coming to the minute details at the steelers could work on So play like that doesn't happen simply put coach thomas. You've got to put the lid on all plays like that. Basically saying you can't be beat over the top and not let Other teams beat you as long touchdowns with which is exactly what henry rugs. And derek carr were able to do to the pittsburgh steelers echoes elmo's and asked about the trade turner incident Tallinn's.

"He was on hard knocks back in the day with the jets when rex ryan was the head coach. I've seen him about she's really really good. Steelers LB T.J. Watt Still Not Practicing With Team as Week 1 Approaches

"Have sneaky big news coming out of pittsburgh. This is bad and it. Serious steelers superstar linebacker. Tj what is declining to practice. This has been getting very little attention. He's been sitting out since the start of camp wants to contract the steelers having given him one and it's almost impossible to quantify just how good this guy is. He comes off a season in which he led the league with fifteen sacks he had the best pass rush win rate sport meaning. He beat his blocker within two and a half seconds. So he's a superstar. This is a guy. many people are being. It'd be the defensive. Mvp and jeff. Can you explain because again. This is not getting as much attention as i think it should be. Exactly what it is going on there will let me explain why to you just mentioned. Tj watt has been sitting out. he actually hasn't and that's what makes this. Such a weird scenario. Is that because of the fines that players face for a holdout now mandated by the players or not sitting in essentially so he's been going through practices in individual drills but then sitting out team drills and there was sort of. I think there's lingering expectation that that would change once the regular season arrived. It hasn't now mike. Tomlin is scheduled to address the media today. Maybe we'll get some more clarity on what it would take if the team perhaps plans to suit them up anyway on sunday even though he's in team but no doubt a fascinating situation with this added layer the steelers on the fact. They do new deals with players during the regular season. So this doesn't get done before sunday. We're in new territory when it comes to the pittsburgh steelers and negotiations with players.

"And i'm bringing a t- again this week. After the pittsburgh steelers preseason has drawn to a close no they couldn't wrap up the defeated preseason but that may be a good thing depending on your kind of outset mindset on these type of things but the steelers drop in a pretty ugly fashion thirty four to nine to the carolina. Panthers coach tomlin took to the podium straight off the top. He said he was disappointed. In the team's performance surprising to nobody that he wouldn't be happy with that game First and foremost coach tomlin pointed to the offense not being able to take care of the ball as one of the biggest factors in why they performed so poorly. He thought the defense started out. Okay but because the offense was unable to move the football and turn the football over so frequently. They got tired and in doing so. They made mental mistakes and all in all coach tomlin. So the offense and defense were junior varsity which is a kind of a theme for this. This post game press conference from mike tomlin kind of judging guys on whether they were varsity status or junior varsity His words and we will see it to brought up a number of times. Now the last thing before we got to The question period was a breakdown of the injured players. Marcus allen Hurt his hamstring and had to leave the game. Josh jobs at a turf toe. Which saw dwayne haskins reenter the game. Midway through the fourth quarter coach salman would further go on to say at mcfarland's zach. Banner were left at home for treatment to injuries. That they thought would be better. Served a just staying in pittsburgh and getting treated up there. He also was asked later on in this in this. Press conference The status of candidate who was held out of the game because he was sick. There's no more reports on that other than just kennedy being under the weather and something that kinda monitor i suppose in. Today's climate one of the questions. That coach tomlin was directly. Asked was about the long snappers however and we'll start with that one now because christian kunsi of course got all the reps tonight there. Is that kind of long snapping battle that has been going on and survived every round of cuts. so far this steelers were to hang onto kunz. They would have a player that has a million dollars cheaper than candidate and also a better tackler. The pros in camp candidate side is that he snaps the ball at a higher velocity about one tenth of a second faster which yes does make a difference in the nfl. It could be the difference between getting blocked and getting a kick away so it'll be interesting. See how that shakes up whether or not the steelers shut bank on a little bit extra cash and a little bit better special teams coverage skills or someone who can snap the ball faster. That is one to watch as the week goes on and cuts become official taking things off the top now from the question period Coach tomlin was of course asked about dwayne haskins who pretty Pretty pretty adamantly. Put it that day. He was not varsity in this game. it wasn't enough from haskins of course to get the job done. The next question was again on dwayne. Haskins reentering the game and scoring that touchdown very late to ray ray. Mccloud of course Coach tomlin said that might be good for Dwayne haskins to get the taste out of his mouth haskins that is because of his poor performance from earlier in the night to finish in the end zone. But it didn't change anything in terms of the final score the game it It was kind of just a play that could help haskins. Maybe sleep better at night. But it's not going to change the overall grades of the players or how they will be judged upon when time comes down to it to make those cuts Coach tomlin was also asked about what he liked in this game if anything at all and he quite simply put it he didn't like much the final question of course Bondsteel curtains favourite position battle. That we've been monitoring for the last couple of weeks. The punting battle that coach tomlin was asked about really seemed like the only bright spot in the game and the only bright spot of this press conference coach tomlin said presley. Harbin and jordan berry had been varsity. They've been competitive through this entire process. And he's got well. He's going to judge the entire unit special teams wise on film after the game before they can give any fair assessments just to make a prediction myself. It seems like either. Punter has put themselves in a position where the steelers might be able to recoup a draft pick Instead of cutting either them because jordan beria played very well from so maybe the best punting of his career while pressing. Harvard of course burst onto the scene. And we all know the story. If we've been watching the game there with big press so that about wraps things up for the coach tomlin press conference breakdown for the final week of the preseason. Of course we'll be back bringing this action in two weeks time after the pittsburgh steelers take on the buffalo bills. Ladies and gentlemen. It's time for some regular. She's in football. The next you hear this podcast. They games count and boy. Oh boy to. The steelers have a big one to kick the year off with so make. Sure you're dialed into behind the steel curtain dot com. Which once again should be your one stop shop for all things..

"Thanks to tom. Brady and to particularly a shout out to nelson louise the vice president of communications with the with the bucks. I've been talking to him for a while about trying to get brady. And and he was very helpful in it and i really appreciate him His work and making so many people available to me when when i was in tampa for just a day last week. So let's move on to our interview with bruce arians. I enjoyed this conversation. Because i think it gives you a little bit of a feel of how arians is going to approach this year and just how different it is this year from last year. Here's bruce arians. With bruce arians the head coach of the super bowl champion. Tampa bay buccaneers. I have to ask you. Has your life changed now. You've won super bowl. You've coached a super bowl winner. Never gets old brother being introduced as that never gets old but You know finally after the ring ceremony we could put last year to bed and and get this team focused on this year job and put it in review mirror but Yeah that that part never gets you know. It was almost exactly ten years ago a decade ago. That you've got either depending on how you term it either fired or not renewed by the pittsburgh steelers and part of you thought. Well that's it. You're riding off into the sunset. And i wonder could you have ever imagined a that. You were going to coach another ten years and be that this would have happened. No not a million years You know One storybook book year change dollar lives. You know chuck's phone call to come to india ghana in the colts. Yeah he makes that call. We go to indianapolis and You know we're driving the road and my wife looks at the phone show. Shit you're gonna take this job. Wait till to see what he's got a but When when chuck got leukemia and got sick and they got an opportunity to to take over. It opened up all those doors that we're never going to open. And i knew they were never gonna open and it's a shame that took chuck to get sick for to happen but Life is funny man. It takes some crazy turn sometimes but just two more questions about you. That really interest me. Remember at that time even after you had the coach of the year season in indianapolis the only interim coach ever to do so. You still go through the first seven jobs of that postseason without getting a sniff. Seven jobs get filled. The only job left is the arizona cardinals and luckily you get that job but just imagine if they hire somebody else maybe. Maybe you're never head coach. Oh i i doubt i ever would have been you know. I took the chicago interview first. And then came back and really wasn't even going to take the arizona one because kenny wizard. How and russ grimm and kevin spencer those guys while went on super bowl within pittsburgh and i would have to let some of those guys go. We're good friends inside. I called kenney said bro. i don't know if i can take this interview. And he really talk me into take an interview while so let's go to the present tense now. You and your general manager jason. Light have brought everybody of great importance back to this team. The coaches are backed front offices back. Probably you're twenty five. Most important players are all back to me. That seems almost a blessing and a curse. Because you don't have a lot of new blood here. How has it been so far for you. Spent fantastic jason mike greenberg. jackie davison. Just did an unbelievable job of getting everybody back. And we're very fortunate with the hiring process happened before the super bowl. There's no doubt my mind had to hiring process happened. After the coaches for coaches have lost tight end byron and You also have your coaching staff. We even have staff meetings. We've been together so long. Everybody knows what to do where to go. How to do it and Coach coaches is harder than and players. And so as i have them back. Have all the players back to top twenty five to thirty guys. Then i thought we'd jason just hit a home run with the draft and the influx of new young guys that are gonna make big impacts on this football team and giovanni bernard talk about his impact early. Yeah was one of the guys really targeted in free agency. And it was a great interest on his part. Great interest on our part in a veteran back. That's solid pro person and fight football player. But he gives us a pass catching guy out of the backfield. That's been there and done it. And he's been a blessing in a lot of ways because of his preparation. He's one of those meticulous preparing guys. Nothing's going to surprise him in a ballgame Younger players are there any. Is there a downside at all to bring everybody back the whole idea. Maybe some people are complacent. Now i think with with the everybody's think thought would be complacency would be the problem. And you know. I gave all the veterans the entire spring off and We brought in forty five young players looking for about ten fifteen spots and mostly were special teams. So we spent the entire. Ota's with them. Then we brought the vets in for the mandatory mini camp. When you have dante david in. And i'll even throw devon young as years but devon white devon jason pierre paul shag dominance all the leaders. We have on defense. There's no complacency but the competition between our offense in our defense is relentless every day. Because they're both really top five in their Rain ranking so they wanna win every day and with brady on offense. They're not gonna be any complacency. I promise you what's brady lake in year. Two with the bucks it's night and day. I mean he knows how to get to work first of all. He knows where where to stop where to get groceries. All those things that that that affect your life but the terminology it just flows now. He seemed pictures in his brain when he calls the play. He knows the picture in his brain last year was just a bunch of words. What the hell's at me all the way up to by week nine It was it was just a learning process. Us learning him how to make him. Comfortable byron did just unbelievable job. I get way too much credit for anything that happens offensively. It's all byron and So now he can be more vocal he can even a better leader Because he'd really knows what the hell he's doing. You know what. I really remember about being here last year. Exactly one month before your first game of the season to give people an example of how difficult it was last year exactly one month. I saw the first practice where he huddled with his offense. Imagine you don't you don't get in a huddle with your teammates because a cova because of all the restrictions until thirty days.

"From <Speech_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> <SpeakerChange> <hes> that. The other steelers <Speech_Male> linebackers were <Speech_Male> not good in this one <Speech_Music_Male> flat out. <Speech_Male> They looked really <Speech_Male> bad. So that trade <Speech_Music_Male> that we talked about <Speech_Music_Male> a little bit earlier <Speech_Music_Male> is more <Speech_Music_Male> than <Speech_Music_Male> welcome. <Speech_Music_Male> Pass <Speech_Male> that to coach. Tomlin <Speech_Male> was asked about kevin <Speech_Male> dotson which he kind <Speech_Music_Male> of deflected <Speech_Music_Male> Pretty <Speech_Music_Male> quickly <Speech_Music_Male> But <Speech_Music_Male> basically came down to <Speech_Music_Male> Coach tomlin <Speech_Music_Male> being asked if datsuns <Speech_Music_Male> order and more playing <Speech_Music_Male> time and <Speech_Music_Male> coach. Said <Speech_Music_Male> he wasn't able to <Speech_Music_Male> watch him closely enough <Speech_Music_Male> And <Speech_Music_Male> we'll have to watch the tape <Speech_Music_Male> and see were he goes <Speech_Music_Male> from there <Speech_Music_Male> So yes some <Speech_Music_Male> definite deflecting <Speech_Music_Male> on that <Speech_Music_Male> one <Speech_Music_Male> The next kind of question <Speech_Music_Male> kind of involved <Speech_Music_Male> really <Speech_Music_Male> all the second year <Speech_Music_Male> players especially the way <Speech_Music_Male> mike tomlin answered <Speech_Music_Male> it Saying <Speech_Male> that the <Speech_Male> all the guys that are <Speech_Music_Male> coming from the steelers <Speech_Music_Male> twenty twenty <Speech_Music_Male> draft <Speech_Music_Male> class slash undrafted <Speech_Music_Male> group. <Speech_Music_Male> Now they expect <Speech_Music_Male> a big <Speech_Music_Male> step from them. <Speech_Music_Male> What the <Speech_Music_Male> steelers rookies <Speech_Music_Male> did last <Speech_Music_Male> year. <Speech_Male> That's the bare <Speech_Music_Male> minimum. And <Speech_Music_Male> they need to do more than <Speech_Music_Male> that in twenty <Speech_Music_Male> twenty one if they <Speech_Music_Male> want to have a job <Speech_Music_Male> on this team is basically <Speech_Music_Male> what what <Speech_Music_Male> coach tomlin said <Speech_Male> but also complimented <Speech_Male> them that they all <Speech_Male> look like <Speech_Male> they're in extreme <Speech_Music_Male> physical <Speech_Music_Male> condition <Speech_Music_Male> And <Speech_Music_Male> really it's <Speech_Music_Male> it's <Speech_Music_Male> kind of something that's <Speech_Music_Male> going to help fuel <Speech_Music_Male> this team <Speech_Music_Male> Pointing of course <Speech_Music_Male> to alex. Highsmith <Speech_Music_Male> chase klay pool <Speech_Music_Male> Antoine <Speech_Music_Male> brooks junior. <Speech_Music_Male> Carlos davis <Speech_Music_Male> and james. <Speech_Music_Male> Peer were all the names. <Speech_Music_Male> That coach tomlin did <Speech_Music_Male> list in that little segment. <Speech_Music_Male> So <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> maybe those guys will be <Speech_Music_Male> some pretty big <Speech_Music_Male> kind of contributors <Speech_Male> here in <Speech_Male> twenty twenty one <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> Coach <Speech_Male> tom was also <Speech_Male> asked about the defense <Speech_Music_Male> kind of <SpeakerChange> getting burned <Speech_Music_Male> a couple times <Speech_Music_Male> and really <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> it was was <Speech_Male> a pretty simple answer <Speech_Music_Male> from coach. Tomlin <Speech_Music_Male> but i think it speaks <Speech_Music_Male> volumes. <Speech_Music_Male> This team <Speech_Music_Male> especially defensively. <Speech_Male> Didn't <Speech_Male> show a whole <Speech_Music_Male> lot of scheme <Speech_Music_Male> lies not trying to confuse <Speech_Music_Male> the other teams quarterback <Speech_Music_Male> and basically <Speech_Male> why they're <Speech_Male> trying to do that and <Speech_Music_Male> coach tomlin did answer. <Speech_Music_Male> This was <Speech_Music_Male> that we're <Speech_Music_Male> trying to evaluate <Speech_Music_Male> our own players. <Speech_Music_Male> We're not trying <Speech_Music_Male> to confuse the other team. <Speech_Music_Male> <hes> playing <Speech_Music_Male> some dramatic scheme. <Speech_Music_Male> You're not gonna get the <Speech_Music_Male> best look out <Speech_Music_Male> of these guys that you're trying <Speech_Music_Male> to figure out whether or not <Speech_Music_Male> they're good enough to make the <Speech_Music_Male> team so <Speech_Music_Male> playing <Speech_Male> some fancy scheme is <Speech_Music_Male> not what the are trying <Speech_Music_Male> to do in this game <Speech_Music_Male> and they <SpeakerChange> didn't <Speech_Music_Male> Do <Speech_Male> the burn a couple <Speech_Male> of times shirt. But that's <Speech_Music_Male> what the preachings about <Speech_Music_Male> the steelers are evaluating <Speech_Music_Male> their talent <Speech_Music_Male> going about business <Speech_Music_Male> the right way <Speech_Music_Male> and really <Speech_Music_Male> it's I <Speech_Music_Male> would say it's been working <Speech_Music_Male> out for them and <Speech_Music_Male> of course we <Speech_Music_Male> know what they're going to get <Speech_Music_Male> And <Speech_Music_Male> then of course the steelers <Speech_Music_Male> will open that playbook <Speech_Music_Male> once we hit week <Speech_Music_Male> one and <Speech_Music_Male> everything <Speech_Music_Male> will open up <Speech_Music_Male> from <Speech_Music_Male> there. <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> The last question <Speech_Music_Male> of <Speech_Music_Male> This <Speech_Music_Male> coach tomlin <Speech_Music_Male> post game. "mike tomlin" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain

"Mike tomlin press conference recap podcast where he was talking about all things steelers as it relates to the team preparing for their second preseason game it's technically week one but it's their second preseason game against the philadelphia eagles at lincoln financial field in philadelphia this thursday night at seven thirty. Pm eastern time. Mike tomlin started off the press conference talking about the philadelphia. Eagles game not talking about the eagles but just talking about the the upcoming game. He said that he's looking for similar things in the second exhibition game as he was in the first exhibition game against the dallas cowboys in the hall of fame game. The only difference is he is kind of differentiating between these two types of players players that are getting their first opportunity. So maybe someone that's coming back from injury or maybe someone that didn't get a lot of playing time in that first game. He's looking for them to eliminate pre-snap injuries having penalty free games in dealing with motions and shifts especially on offense much better in those that have already had a game under their belt. He's looking for players to have an elevation in their play So we're talking about players like he's talking about essentially having awareness inequality about their play growth inconsistency more fluid in faster and he said it's just another this upcoming games just another first game scenario based on the fact that this is the first preseason game for the philadelphia eagles but again tomlin reiterated. He does not care who his team is going up against just that they are playing their brand of football the way that they want to play. He was asked about the quarterback situation. It's pretty obvious. Ben rothlisberger is not going to play. Although that mike tomlin did not state that clearly and he said that the pittsburgh steelers will mason rudolph starting the game for them on thursday followed by duane haskins and josh dobbs to finish up so the same exact rotation they had against the cowboys they asked about. The plan can their plan because he did say tomlin said they do have a hardcore plan when they go into games. They said ken then plan change. He said yes. In last week was a perfect example. They had planned for mason bereft to get two drives the second drive ended with the fumble when he and klay bulls exchange got botched. They lost the football is recovered by the cowboys. He then put mason murphy alpha a third drive. He did not want that to end the way it did for mason rudolph so the plan can change but that is the plan as of right now speaking of participation he did not give a clear list of who is in and who is out. I think it's safe to say the players that are veterans. Were talking cam hayward ben rothlisberger joe haden. They're probably not going to play in this game but he did say the final decisions have yet to be made. He's looking forward to some of these players that are returning that are on there as he put it quote road to recovery. We're talking about players. Like devin bush zach banner szucs core for even someone like pat farm me through miss. Last week's game with a shoulder injury should be back in the lineup Or i guess in his case rookie should be in the line for the first time as a professional he was asked about kevin dotson we all know about the news relating kevin dotson the offense of guard and he said that look. His focus is on those who are working. They asked about whether they liked his work as he starts to return back to the team and he said i'm not in charge of that. I got good reports about his work. A pleased with those reports. He's he's he's just getting back to work and that's where they left it. There was an update on james washington's injury. He has a lower body injury of some kind. He's a tomlin said. The update is he may miss a day or two but not expected to miss a lot of time so good news for james washington as it comes to his injury but he probably will miss this thursday night. Tj what he's situation is we know what that is by now. This fact tj wad is not going to be participating in team drills until they get a contract on. He was asked about that. Obviously as keith butler it's spill the beans on why what is not fully participating in practices and tomlin said that. What situation isn't unique. He brought up cam hayward participating fully a year ago until they got his contract done. He said that it has to run. Its course sometimes these things. Their courses run faster than others. He can't focus on that. He said i have to focus on guys who are working for whatever reason but he did go ahead and his is something. The tomlin has always done was hired in two thousand seven. He talked about how one man's misfortune can be an opportunity for someone else. In this case he brought up specifically that what being out has given them. Greater exposure to melvin ingram. He's the player. They signed before training camp outside. Linebacker played his whole career with the chargers now finds his way in pittsburgh on a one year contract and he said that ultimately ingram is a player that they have really gotten to know. Because of watts situation he was asked specifically about tj wadden. Would he be good enough to go if he didn't sign the deal until right before week one. He said he doesn't deal with hypotheticals. He's gonna take it day by day. But speaking of ingram tom on talked about ingram and he said that in a team meeting this morning he said they're coming after ingram today based on his run stopping z's run game bully and they're going to make sure that they make life tough for him. They're gonna throw tight ends over top of him they're gonna slide protections to him. He wants to see what he has left in the tank. He said there's no reservations because he was asked specifically about. Melvin ingram's health and was it a hesitation for the organization prior to them signing these. It there's no reservations about his health. That was done with the physical everything checked out. And he said that his flexibility or versatility to play both sides right and left outside. Linebacker is just. It's huge for the steelers. Not only in the fact that if someone gets hurt whether ties smith or what he can fill in on either side but also he said if we want to utilize tj watt in a different way. The fact that ingram can play. Both sides is a huge advantage for the steelers. He was asked specifically about the front seven last week. Going going back to the dallas game..

"His bus go in with several others earlier lassie last year. No one's talking too much about bill. None the legendary scalpels tomlin spoke glowingly of bill. None and how great he was in the time that he spent with him the things that he taught him that he's still uses today in terms of scouting players and looking at potential players to bring in. He said the man was a genius in his own way. And so it's good to hear coach. Tomlin talk about that. He just couldn't talk enough about the the fact that they're going to have the experience of the hall of fame ceremony. He did not say whether they were going to go and be there. I remember when dick lebeau was enshrined in canton. The entire defends the entire team when we were there in person. I'm not sure if that will happen this year with these circumstances with everything that's going on with protocols and stuff like that but mike tomlin is not going to ignore the fact that this is a big weekend for the pittsburgh steelers organization in their fan base. And they're excited. It'd be there thursday night. Pittsburgh steelers dallas cowboys legendary matchup. It's preseason no one cares. it's football. Were excited at football back. And so i- show respect to the men that i work with bringing that same energy By bringing same urgency as idols focus on. What's going on with me. I just looking to the is it a young man that i work with and as chasing dreams and and trying to make life better for themselves and their family in understanding that if we do our jobs and prepare them and set them up for is significant. There's nothing better than watching a guy you work with live out. His dreams mandate is secure financial security for himself and his family and change the course of generate of life for generations to come. We all been in it long enough now that we can see it in cold. You know Desk that's why we get down like that. That's why we that's why we bring it all on a day to day basis at work because we expect them guys who do the same thing. We want to honor them with urgency of work. That's why you see the response from both these guys. Peter that they get from their players consistently year in and year out. You can't fake that. And they feel it and i always say those who know no and the the players that are in the building working with these guys the coaches on a day-to-day basis. You can't fake it. They see it. And that's why these guys are As great at what they do and even better people and like i said ma'am appreciate you both taking the time guys mean a lot to me and can think of two better guys to wrap up. The flying coach podcast. Peter conned me into doing with them. Such a konczal guys. Sean sean. Ten hours worth of podcast hosting in the off season. I mean this is maybe my greatest greatest achievement yet. It's unbelievable sean. And yet i think you liked it sean. I think you enjoyed it. Conversations like this. Make me enjoy peter. Let's wrap let's wrap with the one thing that we've every coach who's been a guest on this thing and it's been the most rewarding part of this and we'll start with our coach tomlin If there's a twenty one year old coach coaching at the high school level right now. And he's wondering whether he should get involved in this profession. And they get an elevator with raheem morris a bit combine and he says hey coach what. What's your one tip or your one thing you would like to pass along in the next ten seconds that were getting in the elevator. Would you say to that young man or woman as you as you take that ride with them. You know it's funny aspects. That happens all the time to end up my part to give back to these guys of the first emerson does not gonna give just ten seconds on appointed that young man on the way i was forty two about mike tomlin by herm edwards on by lovey smith by robber nellie by monte kiffin by all the guys that that to me joe gardy recipes all those guys investigation and if i came.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin hopes his team isn’t confident after loss

"Mike. Tomlin was in front of the podium. The virtual podium for add a thing. Well just we just talked to him next because the steelers had just lost twenty seven to seventeen against the cincinnati bengals on monday night football. Might tom had spoken to the media after the game. Obviously until on tuesday on a short week leeann week sixteen. The pittsburgh steelers absolutely need a win. And mike tomlin had a lot of questions to answer as the steelers. Prepare for the indianapolis colts to come to heinz field in the season. Finale there at the big ketchup bottle. He started things off of the recap of the cincinnati bengals game. He said the loss still stings. The steelers simply just have to perform better but he also mentioned that some things about team went from bad to worse and he was mainly talking about the team's poor starts. He talked about three turnovers in the first half essentially spotting the bengals seventeen points. He said it wasn't just the offense though. The defense failed to get the the bengals the field even with those turnovers. They never forced field goals. They must they gave up fourteen points in the last two turnovers. He's just a very poor start to the game. He said the score that the steelers face the way that they wanted to operate offensively. They couldn't lean on the run the whether they wanted to. He said the nonetheless with all of that said in his bad as the team was. He's vans cannot expect sweeping changes. He's a they just have to do it better when he meant it. He's talking about he. S to the steelers have to perform better. They have to plan better. He is still confident. You can't expect the head coach. The same thing different. He is still confident in this football team with the coaches that they have they. They need to shut their mails and go to work

Steelers’ Perfect Season Comes to an End With Loss to Washington

"Or game tonight. The undefeated steelers hosting the washington. Football team ben. Roethlisberger and alex smith go and head to head. Second quarter all steelers early. James washington to catch the steelers while received some of the best in the business with run out the catch all been has to get the ball in their hands. They know exactly what to do with it. Fourteen nothing pittsburgh. Meanwhile from the comeback player of the year alex smith. That's the last thing we want to see bleeding profusely after being cleared. It's the other leg to quick nap. Critical moment final seconds of the first half of the clock. Ticking down. Alex smith getting sacked on a third-down play. No timeouts left the trying to run the field goal team out but the clock is going to be stopped by the officials and this may have been sneaky from alex smith. this sneaky. good better and move by. Alex realized that he doesn't have any time outs left and if they used the ball in play to probably not going to be able to get the feel law so retards off with the football. They got to stop the clock in the points. Before the you take a look. Ron rivera's yelling everybody's yelling but we're going to show it to you here. Watch alex smith again. Sneaky veteran move the official saying. Give me the ball. Alex smith is saying. I got other ideas. He takes that one himself. They have to look. He's laughing he knows. Exactly what is doing common knows what he's doing and in the end it results in three medical points. Dustin hopkins forty nine yards. It's up it's good. Fourteen three at the have a little momentum shift now oakland drive of the third smith. Watch cam simms. This might have been the biggest play for the washington football team in this game. And don't just take my word for mike. Tomlin talked about this after the game. Felt like he was a real turning point thirty yards on the catch and run a big first down in that would lead to this. How about logan thomas to the one converted quarterback out of college logan thomas with some great hands being able to get down to the one he's really turned into a professional title. They were punching in premier. So fourteen steelers fourth quarter at seventeen ten at smith. It's thomas wide open worldwide. That's a busted covers right there but don't fault the waas to football team alex smith to taking advantage of the miscues by the steelers. So we're all even now the steelers of a fourth and one on the twenty eighth. They're kick chris. Boswell is out the rookie. Matt right is there. And so mike tomlin elects to go for it a throw was to anthony mcfarland his miscue there and the washington football team takes over on downs and that leads to. This happened this catch. This is a big time catch right here by camps and being able to survive the ground one handed grab pressure situation. Can't do it any better than that. That's a big first down later in the drive. Dustin hopkins from forty five away at the first looks. It's going to hook but then it hangs and it's good to washington up twenty two seventeen but mike tomlin had used his timeouts. Well they will going to have plenty of time. But there's no time when this happens a no deflections your the game washington. Football team's defensive line. Being able to get their hands in passing lanes four passes from that group to reaper. For montesquieu it'll be no perfect season. Washington wins

"Us some news about steelers running back James Connor. Yoshimi sprained his ankle last night Laura now, Mike Tomlin said they're going to leave the white on them for this weekend. So they don't believe it's overly serious, but obviously couldn't finish last night's game in penny snow came and finishes the weeks second leading rusher play very well. This week but PHILP Lindsey Nursing Turf Twenty three to Jerry painful for running backs a difficult injury, and of course, the bears right now are dealing with an unhappy Allen Robinson who today took off his social media pages all mentions of the bears he's unhappy with his contract situation. He's in the last year deal. He'd like a new contract and the fact that he is basically removing references to the bears on his social media platforms. An old trick also a new trick, but it also tells you a lot about players mindset, Alan Robinson not happy with the bears at this point in time.

Is Homefield Advantage Dead?

"WANNA start here eight and I think this allows us to get in week fifteen you mailed me some stats last week And now we saw again today. Road teams were nine and six against the spread. The road teams won all nine of those games outright for the season road teams against the spread. One twenty five ninety three three and five there thirty two games over five hundred while home favorites Through fifteen weeks or fifty seven eighty one in five twenty four games. That's amazing right there. And we have had over and over again these double digit losses. We just had it today again with San Francisco cousin. Sal I ask you this homefield advantage dead. It might be there might be. I think you said you said it in basketball you were saying was dead. It's funny yesterday on text exchange. But yeah if you're looking through your pools and you have to pick sixteen games a week if there are no bison. You're going six and ten every week it's because you're taking home favorites. I know I know it's hard hard. I know when the better team is laying six at home. It's hard to not circle the left side but stay away. It's very bizarre an extremely bizarre week. The raiders was ending that Falcons ending the Vikings first half cost people money the way that ended obviously the Redskins Eagles. That might have been the worst ending if you had if you had the redskins the plus points Or if you're going against Cooper cop in your honesty semi funky you hold. That thought we were talking about that. I think what's interesting to me. I I remember I wrote about this at the end of last decade ironic. I think Oh eight zero nine I wrote about this trend with with the NFL where it didn't see my homefield matter the way it did and then we had settled into this eight nine year run. We're homefield still mattered. But not like a date when we were growing up where it was like. If you went into somebody else's house also really hard to win and then you get to this year and I think we're seeing it with basketball to serves texting boat this weekend. I think there's three reasons I think the first reason is the secondary market. And the fact that you just don't have stadiums anymore words just completely fans for the home team yet so it it always seems to be more splintered than it used to be. The tickets have gotten way more expensive so I think that's that's Priced out some of the crazies. You know like some of the friends wrens. You had grown up some of the friends that I had back in Boston. It's just harder for them to for tickets and then I think the third thing. There's been so much talk about civility ability at games and you know fan behaviors. Just been a huge spotlight on how people behave and what they're allowed to do and yell. Oh and all that stuff and the crowds just seem Tamer and we saw today with the raiders. Blew a game late to Jacksonville Euro and this was the last I Oklahoma Game. It was on those on that. They're not gonNA lose their last home game and frigging g Menchu when right down the field out and then we saw it again today with Buffalo. It's like Ow Josh. Challenge when push comes to Shove Jiaxuan is not GonNa be able to get points in Pittsburgh. The crowd will take him out of it their defense no Josh Allen right down and scored. I don't know who has the great home field advantage anymore. So we'll Josh Allen didn't have a great game no thirteen completions. That was just an. I'm sorry I Pittsburgh Burke might still make the playoffs and I pray that they do because I have. They're the only team I could see betting against in that first round like I have a feeling on any other first round match unless Pittsburgh goes to Kansas City. I mean they've they've got in the last five games in which the supposedly hot they scored fifteen points a game. It's just Mike. Tomlin did as much much as he could. He can't do what you can do for this offense. You can't fake punt from his own twenty eight every week. I'm sorry but I think you're right. I think it's all the things you said. I also I think. Road teams coaches management has figured out the exact amount of time a team should spend in the opposing city. You know it's easier to travel now all that kind of stuff so there's not that much The jet lag isn't as big a concern. But you're right. We used to see division winners at seven and one eight eight. No now aside unless you like the packers this cowboys eagles four and three Kansas City foreign three at home like even the really good teams. You know Houston only five and two at home. Buffalo's GonNa make the playoffs only four and three at home i. I don't know what the reason is but trust us. These home teams are not. They're not better than they were five ten years ago. Yeah and I think that Tennessee Games are good example right. Yep didn't really seem like it mattered. Where that game was played and I don't think it's GonNa Matter Week? Seventeen either right now. The crowd was was good. They were into it but it wasn't like wasn't like the Shawn Watson was going to be affected by the crowd. We left out another reason that I think matters maybe Charles back to our childhoods. But you know the headsets the head facing the helmets and the and the QB being able to hear the offensive coordinator being able to move faster and the the even somebody like trubisky you know they were in that game that I know the packers won by eight. And if he didn't see the game you just assume The packers they were up double digit second half but the bears were lingering in that game and there were a couple of moments era when it seemed like they had a chance maybe to force overtime and I didn't think h Bisky who I don't think is good then look scared but he. He certainly wasn't rattled by playing in Lambo. So I stopped when when you know the we've been doing million dollar pegs you and I have been. We've been betting all season. I've really stopped looking at home field. They're very very few times. Do I say to myself. Oh my God that teams home. I really really love having the home team here even even tonight I bet on Buffalo. Hello at Pittsburgh. And as you said Josh Allen wasn't great but they were still able to move the ball and they needed to and their defense certainly traveled. It didn't seem to matter to them where they were playing. And I just think we throw homefield out. I don't know where it really matters anymore. Well if we go into the playoffs saying I just can't see so and so winning at ax EXC. There's not that many of those anymore right right. Then probably win their game at home and you know the niners or or or award seahawks over wax or they'll have a by but you know those some of those row teams near Green Bay will probably win at home but you can't say unless it's dot co dot com is going to Kansas City. I can't really say Buffalo. There's no way they're winning in Houston right or anything like that especially when you get to the one to three seeds when they match up so do you think is Seattle place that you feel like homefield battered team in the playoffs That's probably top three but not as much Chisato did eight years ago when Tony Romo had to go there or something like that. I don't think it's slow because think about what are they foreign to Yeah about about their last couple of games whether seven and one on the road I mean it is scary arose team right there. Last couple of games Minnesota went in there and put thirty autumn atom. Yep and then the game before that James Put thirty four on them in that game went to overtime I don't know I I wanted to start. The season isn't yeah. It's not the

"I Antonio brown owner is out of the NFL and one of our favorite guys do I have on the show. is of course Steven A. Smith and let's see here what Stephen a Smith has to say about the latest saga. Antonio brown being released from the New England Patriots in the race for the top spot yeah do you expect to see Antonio brown in the NFL again no I do not obviously one will look at his talent. and one would say obviously with the NFL with their bottom line tendencies will want somebody like him and they're willing to tolerate somebody like him. my response to that would be although it is absolutely correct that there are people who's done who've done far worse than Antonio brown that managed to be in the National Football League I would bring up the name calling captain if only for this reason man they talk about Colin Kaepernick every day on their show every day they talk about him it's unbelievable his decision to kneel and in owners eyes compromise the bottom line they wanted to send the message to discourage others from following him in the future being pioneers in certain movements Antonio brown directly attacked Robbie craft how do you think that scull flow with the other thirty one owners in the National Football League I mean if they take bottom line issues personally as it pertains to dollars what do you think they're going to make of personal attacks aimed in the direction of an owner yeah not gonna like it ain't fly with that that's right I said I could like it but Stephen says Dane fly with that let's get to the personal side this man Antonio brown decides that what he wants to do all allegedly is the text messages that he sent out about the the the the person accusing it would you know the sex the second charge against them he said thou pictures of her children in the meantime he also made sure to talk about big band yesterday he talked about Robert Kraft yesterday he talked about Shannon shop yesterday okay he brought up these folks names how do you think that's gonna fly in the locker room he's call it Ryan clock a sellout he's attacked ju ju Smith Shuster how do you think that's going to flow he set up the and went after my Tomblin I am sorry to Mike Tomlin under the bus how do you think that's going to flow this man I've given credit for this he clearly doesn't discriminate he's attacked everybody. I don't. tech teammate tax contemporaries he has pulled no punches okay and he has shown that he can absolutely positively not be trust that I will get I won't even get into this what does great article we have you take into account having a tank filled the Parana's but that's all. and having a personal valet and and and and all you know personal staff to give up what this man has earned all right here's how much she's earned answer web around how much as Antonio brown earned in his NFL career all at all. in millions Bender

NFL Week 2 Monday Night Football

"I thought Mason Rudolph all good it from what I saw just looking at the numbers this morning in the first half half with primarily big Ben I know he departed at about the two or three minute mark of the second quarter or with a two or three two or three minutes remaining in the second quarter rather but you look at the first first half steelers four point three yards per play forty two percent success rate with Big Ben in the second half five point nine yards per play fifty two percent success rate with Mason Rudolph off. He looked pretty capable. There's a reason they moved dobbs so I think you know things. Look a little better for the steelers offensively. The problem album is Mike. Tomlin's defense fell apart in the second half gave up eight point eight yards per play in the second half once. Big Ben goes out right. It's on you Mike Tomlin. It's on your defense inst- to step up and shoulder that increased load instead they regressed right in the eight point eight yards per place in the second half doesn't include the the monstrous pass interference appearance. Call there on edmunds for additional thirty eight yards so steelers. This is kind of the fear we had. We kind of just assumed roomed. It said Hey lady on bell didn't play all of last year no Biggie they seem to make up for that but all of the losses on offense Mike check the offensive line coach. Now you're dealing with James Caan as well left with a knee injury. We'll talk to Dr Trial about that. One see what he says now. You're on the road traveling across the country face San Francisco. It's going to be interesting to see. It sounds like you'll be Mason Rudolph under center yeah very very interesting to see how some of these things kind of play themselves goes out and you always wonder how these teams rebound with some key faces that may or may not be there and of course the steelers staring down the barrel of that Owen to start. We'll see if they can get things corrected as you alluded to their trip on the road to San Francisco but as is the right of oddsmakers and better like you typically see overreactions in week two by the time you get to week three or starting to get a better sense of who some of these teams are and identify how these numbers need to be set figuring out for some of those situational edges so when we look at the look ahead lines for next week pay not a ton of overreaction in the market by any stretch you do have the packers on a look ahead number go for six and a half point favorite now to more than a touchdown touchdown chalk against the Denver Broncos who have to wipe themselves up off the deck knowing they let a glorious opportunity against Chicago bears. Get away from spot on Denver had their heart's ripped out. There obviously not going to have their early season altitude advantage here like they had a week ago. There's whispers within the locker room not all the players. Here's Love Vic Fangio's old school coaching style. If you start doing oh or you win a game like that and you're one and one suddenly players let that slide by but when you're in two you now you're an eight point underdog on the road. Let's see if they can overcome that once. Leflore script were off though for Green Bay and the Vikings woke up the packers offense was back to sucking again and you look into doubt just on the day four point nine yards per play for for the green offense the final three quarters the packers offense averaged three point two yards per play a forty percent success rate and Rogers had zero explosive passes fastest final three quarters so still some things to figure out offensively. They're for Green Bay came out with their hair on fire much much Dr Chagrin but that was kind of after the first quarter the the pace and the output we we kind of handicapped and projected there for the Green Green Bay offense yeah and they even gave were gifted at touchdown for the Minnesota Vikings when they turn the ball over to take that fourteen nothing lead out to twenty one but we're not gonNA cry over spilled. Milk will continue to look get some of the numbers for next week to massive point spreads. That'll remind you a lot more of college football than they will the national football league. I couldn't even tell you in an historical context when you're GONNA see two favorites favorites of this big magnitude pain look ahead number for the patriots thirteen points. Now I know Sam Darnold of course was factored into this look ahead number with him. Being out regardless of how the jets perform tonight against the Cleveland browns you're looking at the pats a seventeen and a half point favorite yes differing numbers on the look ahead. One shop had the look at as low as ten. They actually produced that before the Sam Darnold News obviously so you have patriots than Bennett. They've outscored their opponents now. Seventy seventy six to three you know Antonio Brown is a go. It looks like a real factor and it's not just Sam Darnold. That's going to be down again right. There's other guys that have some injury question question marks for the jets interesting see where this number goes right. I think there's going to be a lot of movement. Obviously it's not open everywhere right now but you know trevor sending in the jets pull off off an upset tonight or if they get blown out this number is going to head in different directions right. I think if the jets get blown out you're probably looking at closer to twenty if they somehow pull off the upset victory probably turning back down towards two touchdowns.

Is it possible for the Rockets to beat the Warriors?

"Want to buy. Aids. Is it possible? The rockets could get it together by the Western Conference fund where they're better than they were last year. Is that possible? I don't think so it's not possible. I don't think so I think that's poss- adult at the sixty five wins as good as they looked last year. I don't think it's possible for most teams to be better than they look lashes out. But what I mean is actually better like the the warriors one seventy three games. Yeah. And then they got better because they added the rent their regular season record wasn't as good. But in the moment of truth, they were clearly the best team. And of course, they should be big favorites. Again, the way they've been looking recently. And the talent we know they have my point is if you believe it's possible for the rockets to actually in the moment of truth now that they have the experience of last year be better than they were last year. They only need to be that much better by the snow. You don't think the lawyers? Got you go, Molly, I'm trying to make. It's just interesting doing down that ladder. They had no man that tell C P three got hurt. I just. Very very very clear. My reservations for Oakland have already been made. There is no there's no issue. Here is your I will be in Oakland at oracle ju- where where are you going to be on the east coast with us? I'm hoping I'm hoping today Milwaukee. But only for you know, I may wanna socialite that's all your team because a lot of drama goes another day in more support coming out for Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown. This time for fellow wideout juju Smith Schuster crazy stuff about AB. You gotta fill in a law firm. If you come back, you guys welcome. And they man he may he's guy. Yeah. Well, I wonder what his teammates feel about this tweet from AB who usually says businesses Bowman and right now, Stephen he's open for business. It'd be over for whatever you want still is Abbas right to say other so exc- he could be open to whatever he wants. I don't give a damn about Antonio Brown's feelings right now I wanted to stay with this. These that great. And really, by the way, I'm not telling you anything. I haven't told him. Yeah. If a damn by his feelings, I want him on a steel course. I don't want to Steelers to trade this, man. He's great. He's too. Great figuring it out. I'll give it there. You gotta give them a massage pedicure. You gotta take them. You gotta have sports therapy sessions with you gotta go play with his cage got treated to dinner for the next day. What you gotta do. Now. I will say this. I want him to apologize to Mike Tomlin to for pudding that coach in that position. But particularly considering the paucity of African American coaches, so only two and NFL it'd be three by the time. New England wins the Super Bowl, I guess unless they lose the bottom line is is that I don't like the position. He put my Tomlin. And that's about it outside of that. He doesn't want get Tomlin put him. That's fair. That's fair. Let's get over it and figure that I or Rooney is saying I don't see how you can be on the team next year. Yeah. And all the press all the chirping out of the Steelers negative towards the future with Antonio round. Like, we don't we don't see it, basically. Now, all of the sudden juju Smith Schuster, though, watching his body language and his and hey, Derek Carr. Yeah. I'm I'm inferring. What I see? That's true. I didn't seem to me like it was in juju Smith, Schuster heart. But you can't know another Mantar all you can do is inferred from what you see. Didn't I don't know? If he if those words that are coming out of his mouth reflect the way, he's feeling, but I'll let me read between the lines a little bit. It seems to me Stephen A that at the point that they were saying all that stuff. They were probably thinking we are going to try to trade him. And probably I imagine started to kick the tires on some trade ideas like one could they get back for him. And I think what I read this. As is. Maybe what's happening here is they're not liking what they're hearing in terms of the return on moving Antonio Brown. And that they're better off with him. That's my sense. If they don't if that is true, then the Steelers would have everything to do with that. Because how do you want to trade such as surreal asset and command top dollar a top cash eighth for him? When in fact, you've served a role in excoriating, correct? So what you do don't they say this is what happened with Kyrie? Right. When the whole world. Knows he's outta there. Or you're gonna get the best offer. The worst offer at the worst offer you have to make people believe that he's going to stay whether that's because you don't get the offer you want. It's going to snake or to make people believe it. So they come with a better offer before we move onto LeBron. I just have to say this quick. I don't think I ever gave you props on this. When lady on bell was sitting going to sit out. And I was like there's no way he sits out. You're like, no he's probably going to sit out and he sat out the entire season. I think you're the only person that actually believed that he would do that. When we think he could do if you wanted the gold at the end of the grandma never would his type talent on that team. But happened LeBron James on this is fifteen straight game with the Lakers take on the Timberwolves tonight. But he hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's matchup with the sons, according to coach Luke Walton when he was injured on Christmas day the Lakers weren't fourth place in the west since they injury, Los Angeles five and nine they've dropped to ninth plates in the west, Stephen A. How bad is what bronze injury for the Lakers of worry. I was told not to be worry if LeBron James Levy reading. Needed to he could go out the plate, and he would be ready, but I find this to be the most significant injury of his career I'm incredibly concerned because I want the Lakers to get a big time free agent. I want them to make some noise in the summertime, and I think that obviously when you took thirty four years of age, they are going to be people who are going to question your ability, even the great LeBron James almost never hurt. So the fact that he's outright. Now, you have to wonder whether or not a potential free agent is going to look at that. And question how much time does he have left at this level? That's when I'm not saying there's any legitimacy to that. I'm simply saying that that's a reasonable cause for concern. And so the bright lights LA Tinseltown palm tree. So the California weather notwithstanding. You'd never know what some marquee free agent is going to look at when it comes to Magic Johnson. Lincoln picking up the phone to call them and say come on L A what I man the Bron. When in fact, they're wondering about LeBron. More. I look at this more. I think Jerry's going to be a Laker. Yeah. Because I started to run down the scenarios if it's not a Y, and it doesn't look like it'll be why I wouldn't put anything past magic he landed. Lebron after all if it's not going to be K D or someone like that if Kemba Walker in fact wants to stay where he is. And they work that out if Mike Conley is not the answer in a trade. And if the Celtics don't wanna give Kyrie a supermax like why would we want to stay in Boston, not only that they're extremely talented coach the whole thing, but he'd get a supermax deal. Then I think kyri and LeBron could come around in their own minds to seeing a reconciliation as hey, what if Kobe and shack worked it out what if they parted ways? But then they said, you know, what we messed this up. Let's work this out and that eventually the Lakers would be Kyrie's team that's got to be very appealing. We know kyri has relationship with Kobe. And could you imagine if the Lakers didn't have to give up any assets at this trade deadline, if they kept Ingram and Kuzina and. An and heart and all these guys and simply added KYW read or run Bill that happens where are they in the west for ten Kyrie's there right now with LeBron and LeBron's healthy. And assuming Ingraham continues to improve and mom gets a little better share, maybe one more acquisition the right acquisition. Lakers can win the chip next year. If kyri is there, you do not need Lonzo ball. They're correct. And that means you might get something for Lonzo. Then you might not need Brandon Ingram either. Say that happening playing with LeBron listen, I'm told that is far fetched kyri is happy and Boston. He has no intentions of leaving. But Kenny had ever go around not shutting. I don't have to pretend I'm not sharing anything anything's together. Anything is they get back together for now. Sure about that. Thanks. Mitch listening to the podcast gets.
