"NFL circles, especially the coaching community, the minority coaching community, NFL. I think there was a little bit of heat building on Mike Tomlin because until he promoted Terrell Austin to defensive coordinator this off season, he had never had a black coordinator offense or defense or anything like that. So here is Mike Tom on one of the few head coaches in the NFL. In position to sort of get these guys, some of these guys ready to be head coaches and, you know, he wasn't being overly proactive about that. And now he has Tara Austin and he brings he brings in Brian Flores and I think it's a great move because Tara Austin is his forte is more in coverages and Brian Flores as we know from his time in New England and also Miami, Brian Flores is one of the most creative front 7 schemers in the league. I mean, the amoeba defense here was one of his big things. I think the Steelers have gotten too stale there with their zone blitz and the Steelers. They got to be blitz Berg and they got to stay strong to their roots as the zone blitz and stuff like that when it's like, all right, you know, NFL offenses have kind of evolved since then and you're not really fooling these guys with the zone blitz as much anymore. But I think that Flores his ability to put his flavor on the front 7 will only help those guys more TJ watt and those guys, I think it's a really good fit. "You know, you know what I mean? It's like there's a different societal standard and not everybody wants to be a part of that. He wants to go coaching balls, so good at him, but he was definitely scared of the SEC smoke for sure. USC I can't get a feel for her because they've had a couple of runs, obviously. Their most famous player is OJ. Their most famous team was just completely in disgrace with some of the scanners they had. Those mid 2000s USC teams, which I was living here at the time. That was a thing because the Lakers sucked. They kind of had the alpha dog status in LA, which is crazy, but it's true for a couple of years. USC was the most important team here. Kobe was going 40 42 every year and USC was all anyone talked about. And the UCLA fans were so mad. I'm sure you've enjoyed that too. The UCLA USC thing is actually pretty enjoyable. There's real hatred. I didn't know that until I moved out here. The two fan base is really don't like each other. So now UCLA's doing better and then you have USC they go get this kick ass coach, although I agree with you. It's a little suspicious that he fled. Yeah. He went running in the other direction, but still, it's better than any situation I've had in a while. For sure. The USC during that time, it was very pretty football. Very pretty football. Mid 2000s, mid 2000s, yeah. Yeah. Very, very pretty football. Pretty boy football. Sudden, fast, glitzy, glamour, hardware taken down. When you look back at the run, you can make some arguments that the run is not really as successful as what people remember. What championship they split with us? Yeah. They lost Schuster for the year. They should be one of the 5 worst teams in the league. And Tomlin could just scratch out, I think for college that really would have worked. COVID How does it feel now that you have fans in the stands It's great I mean the return to little Caesars has been a tremendous boost for the team No different than any team players thrive on that fan engagement and energy that they provide But I think the biggest piece for us is the ability to engage with our fans again We've been doing a lot in the community and in and around the city of Detroit But for them to be able to experience a game the presentation all the fanfare that comes with it that's been the most exciting part I got to ask you Mike about the business side of running an organization that's in a rebuilding phase What does rebuilding look like now Because I think every time I hear the word rebuilding I think back to the 76ers and their trust the process mantra in the 2010s and how that influences people's expectations for the return on investment in that process If you're an advertiser if you're an owner of your management you're the talent at all affects you differently What does that rebuilding look like for you Troy said it a couple of times it's a restoration He keeps using the word restore And I think that's probably the best most appropriate word to use I mean for us what we've really been focused on for the last let's call it two seasons is restoring the brand Just like we started this conversation there's great heritage and history of this team with championships And I think in the move downtown we really wanted the brand to be reflective of where we're headed So that's been the part that we've been most focused on And in order to accomplish that it's been about authenticity Being authentic to the city of Detroit the people that are in it and making them a part of everything we're doing So whether it's our small business program we've leaned in on whether it's our talent search that we did this summer where all of the arena performers and acts are going to be people from the city of Detroit That really has been an emphasis in focus because we got to be rooted in the city that we call home Hey Mike Tom You had the number one pick with Kate Cunningham Somewhere back in the 80s the NBA went from a team league marketing standpoint to marketing individual players Is that pretty much hold true today Our approach is never built around in individual I always look at it as the players are communicators of the brand but not the brand So I think from us you'll continue to see a more team holistic approach when we go to market obviously is a big piece of that We had a great rookie class last year and Olympian and Jeremy grant some great acquisitions like Kelly Olynyk and the off season this year So I think you'll consistently see from us a more team oriented approach I want to build on that I know I hate using the phrase auburn hills the palace the silverdome My answer would be no Obviously I didn't wasn't in market at that time But I think listen you've got one of the best downtown entertainment quarters of any city in the country All four teams play within walking distance of each other You've got the Fox theater that's right there as well I think the downtown entertainment district is a desirable destination "Who have all the risk factors that don't get the disorder. What is it about those people? For example, with something like Alzheimer's disease, there's a particular protein in the brain called amyloid. That's one of the predictors that is another predictor, which is a specific gene called APOE four that people carry, which increases the risk. There are some people that have got two copies of the APOE Fourier which just means they're at higher genetic risk to have high levels of this protein amyloid in their brain, but they don't have cognitive decline. So, you know, maybe ten, 20 years ago, these people would have been sort of just written off as inconvenient outliers in the data, but now people are beginning to look at these. What is about their lifestyle? Because it's sort of genetic factor. It's not the physiology. What is it that's protecting them against getting Alzheimer's disease, for example? It's amazing that you've done so much research over the years, publications, talks all around the world and it worked that you're doing it a couple of universities in Melbourne. It's very interesting. I mean, we could talk for days about the science and the research that points to certain aspects of people's lives and what they're doing differently to be and feel the way that they feel. And I think evidence is not only a big part in the work that we try and put out into the world with the work that we do with living. But it really is an area that I'm genuinely interested in because in a world with so much social media and there's so much news. You just sort of don't know what to believe. And I think at the end of the day, it's really important that we get to the truth as best as we can. And I think people like you who spend hours and hours and research time finding the truth. I think that's important stuff. Thank you. It's a big topic that we could have spoke for, I reckon four or 5 hours on here just about the brain itself. And a lot of this stuff might is very new to me. Andrew, it's very new. I think it is to a lot of people. Yeah, it is, man, it is. And I think it would be an opener for a lot of people who are listening right now because it's one thing, you know, having a great meal once a week. But it's about consistency, I think. And I don't think you have to be a very wealthy or a millionaire to sort of to get on the healthy food bandwagon or to start learning more about, you know, you met its reine dot, for example, pescatarian dot, whatever that looks like. I mean, everyone's very different. But, you know, I can tell you right now with my hand on my heart that food, nutrition and exercise has changed my life, not saying that's going to change everyone's life, but I live and breathe it myself, so it's easy for me to say that, you know? What about you Mike? Do you live and breathe it yourself? Are you in a Mediterranean diet? Is that why you said passionate about it though? I try my best, you know, it's like you say these things aren't black and white, but certainly my diet, my lifestyles changed a lot, exercising. I think it's probably the one thing that's really changed things for me. And you made a really good point early on about how often these things that aren't convenient, you know, there's a lot of work showing that they're cheaper, but convenience of some poor food. So some sort of socially disadvantaged working single murder who's got a little Johnny or Jenny asking them for a markers as opposed to cooking up some delicious vegetables. That's a really, really hard position. And that's a different problem. It's not one that I know the answer to, but I hope somebody does. Yeah, and it's a very common one to I think Andrew, I mean, so many people listening right now could relate with that exact comment, your mind. I mean, how much easier and more convenient? Is it just to stop on the way home and grab something that's going to take 5 or ten minutes to down if you're in a rush to a mating or something like that instead of going home cooking up a piece of chicken or a piece of salmon and throwing in a bit of broccoli and some brown Ross and maybe some dark grains. It sounds like a lot of work, but it probably really isn't. You can do it really simply and you feel a hell of a lot better after, don't you? That's why I always sacrifice my tongue. I'm like, oh, Mike Tom to get the extra 5 or ten minutes to put in the good food. And do the exercise because I know it makes me feel better. It makes me perform better at my work in my relationships in my life. But I want to say, look, we've hit out four cards up here. Receiver is a dependent position. Yes you go as the quarterback does he asked to read it and see it and decide. You're opening up to throw it to you and then you have to trust. He will get it within your catch radius. But i think we're having two different arguments we're trying to. We're trying to bay one thing what you're telling me. I'm not saying jerry was ever more valuable than the quarterback. I'm saying jerry was a better receiver then. Tom your quarterback. That's all i'm saying if you look at the numbers how can you say that. He skipped dick curiously. You look at his numbers day compared to the next best number that to in all the guy that had these numbers out jerry played in which all they did was throw them all. Okay but i can give the bulk of that credit to bill. Walsh's off west coast. Yes and to joe. Montana and steve young for throwing it to jerry rice. But jared jared had no impact on bill okay but in in leadership. Jerry wasn't a leader a follower on those teams. Okay gerald jerry's work ethic jared length to work at. But but again if the historical opportunity to take brady lt they would just take brady because you can't beat them. Because of the values the value at the position is like okay. "Jammed together in all three may make the playoffs And then there's the Cardinals and I think the Cardinals they don't make the playoffs. Think there'll be one of the teams looking for a new coach, Come January. Why do you say that? Well, when you look at the history of the Cardinals They've They've been around for over 100 years. They've never had a coach last longer than six years. Two guys made it six years. Jim Hanifin and Ken wasn't hunt Bruce Arians was there five years. And this is the year when the column very experiment needs to come to fruition, and if it doesn't happen, it's not gonna be anyone's fault. But the coach who's responsible for getting the most Out of Murray and just some of the things that were said throughout the offseason by guys like GM Steve Khan by Murray, who is clearly getting frustrated by not getting to the postseason. I think if it doesn't happen, that's when job number one in Arizona becomes finding the right coach. To build the perfect offense around column er, give me some more hot seat. Well, I think I think in Minnesota, where Mike Zimmer Is setting the stage to be on the hot seat by saying, I think we have a pretty good team. Now we just have to go out and prove it. Rick Spielman, the guy who built the team is probably very appreciative of that, because maybe that means he doesn't get fired if they fail to make it to the playoffs, But they have a weird vibe around them. Because of the offense. Offense feels like it's fallen off a bit now we didn't see any Dalvin cook in the preseason, but if that offence doesn't doesn't produce at a high level, it's going to be very difficult for them to get to the postseason, And if they fail to make the playoffs for two straight years, I think Zimmer could be In significant trouble. Beyond that, it's just going to go. I mean, other than Kingsbury and Zimmer. You know who out there has. I mean, would Mike McCarthy be gone in Dallas? I don't know They'd fire him after two years. Sack Taylor in Cincinnati Easy pick for the hot seat. If he's got guaranteed money in his contract for 2022 Bengals, don't fire people and pay them. They want their coaches to work, and Jerry Jones is the same way. Probably only thing he has in common with Mike Brown. He doesn't like to pay coaches to not work either. And that guaranteed money for either McCarthy or Taylor beyond this year could help save them. But you know, we see it every year. I mean, there's gonna be bad teams. Everybody's optimistic. Now. Glass is half full everywhere, Everybody zero and zero. Everybody's got a chance. The end of the day. Every team that's good. That means it's gonna be a team that's bad, and you know, we we see it. We we saw what seven last year. It's amazing the turnover, but Either when you're done and you don't have many chances, and Jon Gruden should be on the hot seat in Las Vegas, But he's not because Mark Davis ain't gonna fire. You know, Mike Mayock will be gone. I think if they don't make the playoffs That Mark Davis is going to keep Jon Gruden indefinitely into the future.
