"Once you make that decision as an organization, you have to have a one track mind, right? Oh yeah. Every move revolves around, does this help us maximize the remaining years these guys have left? And for them to keep a pick that's going to be in the mid in the 15 to 20 range this summer, it's going to be an 18 year old. It's probably going to take four years, three, four years, generously, to make any sort of impact for them, is just unconscionable to me. Like I just don't understand how you can look in the mirror and look at the way those guys are playing the commitment you've made and be like, this is what we needed to do. This could be the last possible year where they have any real shot of contending for a cup, even if it was an outside sort of shot, especially because like malkin's been healthy. Like how often does that happen? It's like really well. He's playing really well. They had to, in my opinion, find a way to make a more substantial upgrade. They didn't do nearly enough and adding another sort of questionable contract in the Greenland one beyond the season. It's a really tough look for on hextall. I mean, one of those strengths previously was their bottom 6 because Mike Sullivan had this superpower of anyone who plug and play there. I'm going to get the most out of them. They just need to forge aggressively be solid defensively, have a high motor, and I'm going to make it work with them. Even if they just came up from the AHL. And then you look at all the moves they made recently and they're just completely opposite from that, right? It almost feels like there's this growing golf between hex Dylan Burke and the management group at Mike Sullivan in terms of the players. He likes and I wonder what the communication is like between those two or what's going on there because the relationship clearly seems to be kind of not where you want it to be in terms of communication between those two.

"Understand good organizations have this sort of shared wavelength between GM and coach where they're like, all right, this is the type of player that I want and I need, go and get them and then we're going to use them accordingly. And instead, it seems like all of these moves are almost like in spite of Mike Sullivan to try an alien in a way and not to not to kind of give him a pass because I don't think he's done a particularly great job coaching this year either, but it's not like they've put him in a position to succeed by giving him the personality that actually thrives under his system. There just seems to be I think that's a great point. There just seems to be a huge disconnect between coach and general manager. And one of the other hallmarks of the Ron hex doll area in Philadelphia was that he and I think Bobby Clark ranted about this at one point this season. He seemed to act on his own, like it was him making the decisions on everything and not having much input from anybody. And that same sort of thing seems to be happening in Pittsburgh, where there just does not seem to be much organizational cohesiveness between general manager in front of office between front office and coaching staff. And there's also Brian Burke element in this where I'm not even sure what he does. Other than just, you know, be a figurehead in the organization. It just seems, they're just, they're just does not seem to be any cohesiveness. Any coherent plan, they're all in on trying to win down with this core, but they don't want to deal any of their first round picks. What's the 18th or 19th overall pick in this draft class or the next draft class going to do for your rebuild? There's no chance you're going to find a player with that pick that is going to dramatically change the course of your organization after Sidney Crosby and of getting Malcolm retired. You're going to be facing a long rebuild there, no matter who you pick with that pick. That's why I love the Tampa Bay approach so much where they just don't they know they have their core right now. They know this is their window. Now you can disagree with how they've used those picks in the trades, but I agree with the philosophy where these pixels aren't helping us right now with these guys that we can still win with. We have to cash them in for what we can. And whether you love his

We bought 6 of them. And that's all we do now. We stream. Now yes, I do understand that the platforms that I want to watch games on cost money and it does add up. But we're not paying almost $300. A lot of people are cutting the cord now, so now all these leagues and organizations have to figure a way to capture the attention of a consumer and that revenue. And I think that this is just going to be beneficial. To a lot of future earnings and not so much on the cable companies trying to basically rape the consumer because it's just so damn expensive. Well the tokyo olympics were on so here. We are the day after the tokyo games in canada. Names it's a head coach and the staff but at the same time. I think that we are probably in a two to three week. Window of getting that final decision made yes or no and if it's no than a release of the nhl schedule without the olympic break in it or if it's yes than we proceed based on the schedule that was released on the twenty third of july pretty hard to argue with the selection of john. Cooper isn't it As head coach. No i mean. Actually i i i was it or maybe i was with the on the other show that i do in your your neck of the woods and i suggested why not john cooper for the american team Because he is a dual citizen now and He he could have done a marvelous job for them. But they've hired mike sullivan to do the job. But it it really is. I mean when you think of of what he's done. And and more importantly i think what people will find his approach so vastly different than mike babcock's when the you know. The last two teams professionals and the olympics were intertwined and mike was the coach both in two thousand ten and two thousand fourteen so from from that i think that there will be a welcome relief for some of the guys that were on those teams that still will be on this team sydney And and and try to figure out what's what's going to happen the surprise for me guys and i just. I don't know whether something's happened or whether he's decided he doesn't want to be involved as joel quenneville seems to be the guy that has been passed over multiple times now. He was passed over in two thousand fourteen. I thought he should have been the coach he had. He had a better record in the nhl. Babcock did but in twenty in two thousand fourteen came around and now he's not even on the coaching staff. Now i can. I'm going to do some. Don't make some phone calls tonight to try to figure out whether he was even asked to be involved And i'm just surprised joel. Didn't get more of a an opportunity to be involved with this with this club. Well it's funny. Cooper back to back stanley cups and Of course uh sullivan. Back to back stanley cups. I can take a look at what you got to do. Now to qualify for these jobs for in the united states and three cups in seven years joinville. Absolutely which by the way is more than bob cock had in the national hockey league and so from that from that perspective..

"Thank you guys for tuning in to the gmc sports podcast. I'm your host. Noah dunlap and so far on the show today we've talked nba playoff second round. What we've seen what we know what we expect moving forward. We've talked college football playoff expansion. Is it going to happen and if it does happen. Is that good or bad for the game. We've looked at major league. Baseball's latest controversy being foreign substances and sticky substances debt pitchers may or may not be using on the mound. And now. I want to close out the show today with a little bit of college baseball as promised at the end of the segment. I'm going to give y'all a prediction for all eight super regionals. That get started later today. But before i get to that i want to break down. A little bit of the coaching carousel. That's already underway in regards to college baseball. let's go and start with pulmonary out at lsu for those of you who don't really pay attention to college baseball all that much. I know it's sport that goes under the radar for a lot of people. Pulmonary is the head coach at lsu has been there for. I think it's fifteen years but he's been coaching for thirty years or more. He announced his retirement. Prior to this year's nc double a. tournament which opened up the lsu job and the reason that's important is that lsu in regards to college. Baseball is one of the best jobs in america so with that job openings arising the kind of became who does lsu look to go after and there are a lot of names that are out there. Mike sullivan's name popped up for those of you. Who don't know. He is the head coach of florida. Right now. I don't like that being a name that actually gets done. The reason for that is mike. O'sullivan has built something at He's won a title at florida. I don't know why you would jump ship to go from gainesville to baton rouge to me. That's too much of a lateral move. And i can't see that happening Another name that popped up as pat. Casey pat casey longtime coach at oregon state. One up leave. it's three titles. While he was dp vers up in corvallis. The problem is he retired a couple of years ago and he is now facing scrutiny for one of the recruits that he recruited to corvallis while he was still the head coach. The guy's name is luke. Heimlich touchy story won't get too much in depth in regards to that because no one quite knows what happened there. But let's suffice it to say that luke. Heimlich got accused of some stuff when he was back in high school up. Leave it was that is completely unacceptable very illegal. And let's leave it at that. The issue is pat. Casey to me is being blamed for this and it isn't his fault and the reason i say that is what happened with luke time luke and let's go and tell you luke. Heimlich is a guy who did not get drafted the year that he graduated from oregon state despite the fact that he was the best pitcher in america due to the fact that major league baseball organizations of franchises decided data want deep baggage that he was bringing the reason. I say this is not pat. Casey's fault is because what happened with luke. Heimlich and the individual in question. Because i'm not going gonna go in depth into what happened with heimlich and that whole situation but it got sealed as do all records when you turn eighteen luke. Heimlich was underage. When this happened if this happened so that record was sealed it only came out because a reporter up there in oregon actually brought it out. No one really knows why we're talking about a kid here. Were talking about a report that got sealed. Y this is coming out. no one knows. That's an entirely different story. That's an entirely different situation but pat. Casey ended up basically with a black eye over that entire situation. Even though it's entirely plausible that he knew nothing about it because luke. Heimlich record was sealed at that point. And you knew nothing about it. So i think that's unfair to pet casey. The problem is with when you have. Lsu who is already having all different types of title nine situations as is. I don't know that you can bring Casey in with even the slightest bit of questionable activity on his behalf there. So that's the only reason pat. Casey doesn't get this job kindle. Rogers over at d. one baseball actually hinted at this and said. Lsu was interested in pat. Casey the question is whether the lsu board of regents would actually approve this higher. And quite frankly i have my doubts which then brings us to who's lsu going to hire. It isn't pat casey. If it isn't mike o'sullivan there's gotta be a name. There are a few assistance out there that they could go after And then one other name is ole coach. Mike be anco. Might be anco has had success. At ole miss. It isn't quite de success. That i know a lotta people down in oxford. Would've wanted eve only bend omaha once in your twenty years that you've been a coach at ole miss all of you. That have listened to me before. Y'all know i'm an ole miss student. Yawn a huge amish guy. So i love mike bianco like the success. Not what you want. But he did basically build the program. The problem is his son. Plays for lsu and he played for lsu in college so the connection is there it would be interesting to see whether or not he would be willing to take that job if lsu. Come calling another name. That i don't think is a farfetched. Option is tony patillo over at tennessee. He is built tennessee into a national power..

"She's fantastic at what she does ESPN hockey reporter Emily Kaplan joining us here on Game Day on ESPN Radio Emily We appreciate the time thanks for jumping on first round of the playoffs in the NHL set to start tonight. I want to start with more of an abstract question. This has been a very unique year for the National Hockey League, in which all the Canadian teams spent the entire season playing one another and nobody else. So how do we properly evaluate the Canadian teams as we get set for the playoffs? Because we've seen none of them cross over to play anyone else do the pandemic. Yeah, it's wild, And it's the same situation here in the states were all three divisions of played each other again and again, and the first two rounds of the playoffs are again in division. So it's just the same teams we've seen face off each other, and I know talking to some guys. They're sick of it. There have you for new competition, but I do think that one it will make these first two rounds. Little extra juicy. You know, there's no feeling out period. We know who hate each other. We know their second seeing each other and to your right Once we get to the semi finals. It's kind of a crap shoot, because we don't really know how these teams they're going to face off against each other. And, you know, we've heard some talk that the North Division was little weaker than the other three. Maybe the central Division of the eastern stronger But there's only one way to see that and that's when they all get to finally play each other, which will happen eventually. Emily. We haven't seen the Penguins on top of the NHL's is 2017. How much faith should we have in Sidney Crosby on this penguin stain? That's a good question. You know, I really feel for them because of the last two years. They've just been decimated by injuries. But I think that coach Mike Sullivan has done a really good job of just been feeling the next man up mentality and it feels like anyone they've put out there with those guys. Does well and this year, you know they're getting healthy at the right time. They just got of getting milk and back, but he missed some time. We'll be here for the playoffs. I think they've got a shot. But they're playing the Islanders in the first round. And that is not an easy out the Islanders of the team that like nobody wants to pick because they don't play a great for effective Brenda pockets all defense. It's pretty boring, but you just kind of discount them until they go on a long run. So I think if they could get past the Islanders, they've got a good shot. But it's no easy out the first round. Emily Kaplan, ESPN hockey reporter, joining Joe Foreign Ball, admiring Metcalf E of the Goodyear Hotline. Some years in no matter what the sport. Maybe you only have a small handful of teams that are truly competing for the championship. When the Golden State Warriors were running through the MBA, it was almost a foregone conclusion that they win The West, and maybe one or two teams had a shot in the East for this year's generation of the Stanley Cup playoffs. How many teams truly have a shot at hoisting that Cup? At the end of the tournament. That's a great question. You know, I think the unique thing about the Stanley Cup playoffs is once you're in. Anyone does have a shot. And we have seen these eight feeds, You know, Go on long run thinking of it. Just off the top of my head. I'd say a half dozen teams I could say, realistically winning, but I I honestly could maybe up that number date. Emily, the Minnesota wild Go 51 into against Vegas. What does that mean? And what's their potential? You think in the playoffs? Yeah, it's crazy because, like the President's trophy was who gets the top seed came down to the pretty much final day and final game that the Colorado Avalanche played and because they won biggest bumped down and had to play. The wild is a really exciting time for Minnesota. They have got this kid Korea could freeze off who just Change the complexion of the team. He's so dynamic, so fun to watch and like they might have been, like lowest on my watch ability rankings last year and probably our top three this year, So yeah, they do get a favorable matchup. It's like Vegas. But Vegas is a team like they've only been in the league for a couple years now, but they think their time is now They're really veteran squad. They've got the best goalie tandem in the league, and Marc Andre Fleury and Robin Lehner. So it's no easy task for Minnesota. But I wouldn't just count them because you know, I mentioned completes off, but they do have a bunch of veterans on that roster as well. So it's kind of a nice, well rounded bunch. I love that term watchability because when you see the playoff structure, you get some teams that were matched up like Boston and Washington, and that just feels given their history that that's going to be a great series. But sometimes that could turn into a done other times. You might have serious that aren't necessarily appealing on paper, but they turn out to be great. I remember maybe 10 11 years ago. In the opening round. The Kings and the Blues had just this seven game brutal battle. That was one of the most physical encounters I've ever seen in my life for the opening round of the playoffs. There's one serious jump off the page at you has one that people who might not normally pay attention should be paying attention to You know, I think one of the more unique series this year for the first round is the battle of Florida. It's the Florida Panthers burst the Tampa Bay Lightning, and there's just so much there. I mean, the Florida Panthers. They're having this Renaissance year they're really buying in. They've got something called the Goaltending Excellence Department, which is hilarious to say, but they created it..

"You don't ray. We asked on the ranger. Greg's twitter channel on monday. A poll question. It is the canadian club. Poll question and we asked me to the four division leaders in points. Toronto pittsburgh las vegas carolina as the best chance to raise the stanley cup. This year in honor. Canadian club Now do you have any idea. Do you pay close attention. You watch everything that happens with. The rain griggs soldiers. Not don't get me wrong but do you have any idea what the results are already think will be surprised by what the pollsters submitted. I don't know the numbers. But i'm going to guess. Toronto vegas pittsburgh carolina who interesting toronto vegas pittsburgh carolina. Vegas vegas rehab -solutely slam dunk vegas. Which is nice. Because we've got. Max pacioretty the vegas golden knights on the podcast this week. I wonder how many times devoted as you say that. I could just see marc andre fleury for whatever reason with flippers. Just hammering things vegas fifty six percent fifty percents Six percent of those voted going with the vegas golden knights. The toronto maple leafs eighteen percent. Carolina snuck ahead of the pittsburgh penguins thirteen percent for the hurricanes. Twelve point five percent for the penguins. Look we'll get into headlines voluntarily for me. I'm surprised that the penguins success this year me to. I'm not by the individual success. Sidney crosby is still a study and there are lots of good things. Like about the penguins. I guess it's the sum of the parts that i didn't see coming together in the fashion that they had I wouldn't have thought tristan. Jerry and casey smith would play goal like they have. I wouldn't have thought their defense could be as good as they are and without malkin. Who's not the malkin old but still a damn good player. I wouldn't have thought this could be but man crosby cancel roster all over twenty goals at teams fast and mike sullivan is a really really good coach. Really good coach. I mean talking about good coaches. You've got the carolina hurricanes rod brind'amour's. Look that deals getting done soon. The extension for rod brindamour should it one hundred percent. Maybe before the playoffs. I mean there's been some good dialogue. But you're old ward good coaches right in. Most you see around the league teams chase the good all the time. "James as we wrap things up today. That such sidney crosby going into the covid nineteen protocol. That's not to say. He has kobe but I guess The situation is such that he's got a quarantine for at least one game and The head coach of the team. Mike sullivan said He wasn't gonna play tonight. Added the penguins cancer the morning skate due to protocol and Again being placed on the list is not necessarily mean. A player has tested positive. Say the nhl overall. They've had little outbreaks here and there. I honestly thought it would be worse than what it is The list today featured crosby ryan johannesson of the nashville predators and thomas hurdle of the san jose sharks and the league. They updates things every every day at five o'clock. But i thought it without the bubble situation i thought it would be worse than what it is. But certainly that gets everybody's attention when One of the game's greatest players He's taken out of the roster. I gotta admit right. We haven't we over the several months over the last year. Now right when when did you know the the kickoff of the pandemic was that piercing shot of Ruben what's his face owner dallas looking at his phone. Do you remember that night. They said. Okay the nba's cancelled. That was the first that was the first league to shut things down tired. But mark. cuban. Cuban ruben could go for a cuban sandwich right now. I was thinking of a good savage hills. Giving the hot mustard would you on the market. Ruben okay anyway and of course then it's been just a shit show this whole thing but steve. This is kind of. It's been four five days a thing in hockey so which is a great sign and he isn't necessarily the positive right. I got a text today from my buddy bill. Comrie his son. Eric is goaltender Been beaten it out there in the minors and stuff and i got moved to jersey from winnipeg played a game with new jersey a couple of weeks ago and he won. Anyway back in winnipeg now and billy was saying it's a it's a crazy time for for good goalies right to second third string goalies or backup goalies because they move from one city to the next steve often right or get called up or something like that and then they gotta go quarantine for frequent two and a half weeks. You know a every time they move around. That's been the case with his son so it's been pretty good steve. I'm kind of. I'm kind of getting a little more. Hope again that this things. Maybe getting in control. I talked to someone today. Who got their got their vaccine. They're starting to roll them out. And so so that's one of the things. I'm interested to see what the trade deadline looks like. This year is gonna be busy and we always see the tsa in trade deadline day. Is you know always really exciting. They're going to be a bunch of big trades big blockbusters well in most cases in a lot of cases. Anyway you're going to be hesitant because Particularly the canadian teams. Anybody roles in is going to have to go into a fourteen day quarantine right at that stage. You're bringing these guys in because you want them to help you. You know in the playoff drive in everything and for the teams that are just trying to make the playoffs. It's between deadline day in the end of the regular season. That's everything to those types of teams. Are they gonna make deals a month away from the end of the season if the guy's going to be unavailable to them for two weeks so i might have. What do you do then. Steve did not say okay. There's no you can't trade yet. Starting now you certainly can. I just think that the teams that are fighting for their playoff lives. I think there's going to be fewer of those engaging in these trades the teams that no. They're going to the playoffs and they're going for it all and they wanna win the stanley cup. They'll still go ahead and say well we're in the playoffs. We know we're comfortably inside the playoffs right now. Right so we'll go and make this deal and we'll get them for the last couple of weeks of the regular season but we really brought him in for the playoffs. It's more of those teams that are on the bubble that that might not make the deal Because you have to give up quite a lot and you're you're not gonna have the guy for two weeks he's gonna get rusty on you. You only have two weeks left. After that and the regular season could affect things at the end of the day. I mean the next two three weeks it'll be a really telling rate about cova because baseball's underway now right for the sports world right and you know this is close quarters. There's lot going on. Curling pulled it off. Stevie the scotties the ki a anderson it how they pull that off. I just thought there's no way people you know breathing on each other. Steve sweeping rocks runner. All with with four games. Going on side by side and all that stuff and They they did it. We'll see what happens with baseball. Hockey hockey is doing it and basketball. Right is is there. I haven't read too much about while. The raptors have had a couple of games where they had to shut down here recently. So the it's out there and and That's why the nhl would have an even bigger issue than they've had many dallas. They missed a pilot games at the start of the season. There's looking like the sensor finally out of last place technically because they're they're ahead of the dallas stars at least when they checked this morning and Let's because they have eight games in hand on this the last time you heard anybody in the nhl irving eight games in hand on any. I keep forgetting about that right. I look i look at it and going okay. The everyone's played fifteen games. These like toronto. They play played five more games than anybody else. I think guy sends around the same as while they believe in around twenty five or something like that we gotta go No final thoughts today. We're gonna go right to the exit but before we go. I wanna remind everybody one last time and my son's coming in the room again to bothering annoy me here. We had two minutes. Michael just two minutes and i'm done and as we as we head out the door reminder that if you're enjoying the show and that we're doing each and every day a brand new show be fantastic you would consider subscribing and sharing link with your friends and followers and we kinda hit you over the head with that but there's good reason for it it does really help the show grow and also we've got the patriot membership as well.
