"But but looking. To the fat that Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. I know that a lot of producers in the industry were really disappointed in how that really played out for portions of the industry I know some parts of the potato industry will pay out just four cents and category two in one sentence category three I compare products like sweet potatoes that are paid out at eighteen cents so I know there's a lot. Lot of frustration for producers when it comes to how the CEEFAX really played out for growers, but as we look again referencing this next phase or a next relief package, what are you hoping to include in that and work with your fellow colleagues in the House and in the Senate to make sure that potato producers in the industry are represented in this next round. Well, you know it's. It's important that we continue working with the Department of Agriculture and that we get that one stand up to the four cents, or whatever make comparable with other prices as you know, don't have to say this. You already know it, but white potatoes voice for some reason. They've got a What's the word I'm looking for? They haven't been well received by by the federal government, or at least they've you know. They took him out of the school. Nutrition programs those kind of things and we worked very hard to make sure we get white potatoes back into the school nutrition program they are the greatest source of fiber and tasks him and stuff that you can have in cheapest source of it, so we were. We were very glad that in the past we were able to get back into school lunch program. But it seems like there's still a little bit of that mentality. In in Washington DC and we've got to change that. Let people know what a valuable food source white potatoes are, and actually at one of the cheapest food sources, so we continue to work with that, but we but as we get into this next place, we got to make sure that we get those payments up. In what are you possibly hearing? working with folks at Usda on on what possibly that payment level could be? Is it too early to to discuss those details? It's really too early. We continue to talk to them. And it's a process of talking to them, but it's too early to say what what that could be, but I like the it up there where it's comparable with other with other crops and so forth. Again. Congressman Mike Simpson is on the potatoes podcast with US right now. We've focused a lot of this conversation on covid nineteen but I. I like to look back to the end of two thousand, nine hundred in the first part of twenty twenty. We saw some great trade successes for all agriculture. Heck, the DC potato fly in back in February. We heard that great news that China was opening up access to fresh potatoes, so we've actually seen a lot..

"Next in depth Mike Simpson and Charles Feldman Major League Baseball players should be well into their twenty twenty season by now instead murder sitting around like the rest of us waiting for a return to something that resembles normal and turned off their sport but while they're sitting around you're going to put their bodies to good use yeah they're gonna participate in this anti bodies start study doctor J. Bhattacharya directs the program on medical outcomes at Stanford it's call managing the M. L. B. antibodies testing research so I was thinking of why why them why this and then I thought okay you've got all these players you've got all these staffers of the stadiums they're spread out all around the country this is like the perfect test population it really is the perfect of population in many ways so first it they have a fantastic organization with medical staff who can help interpret the test there in communities all around the country to country and we're not just testing athletes are testing people who work regular people work work for the M. L. B. OB you know star security staffs compact concessionaires we're gonna get a good look at how widespread the viruses throughout the country and in the in the in the in a way that would have been very very difficult at the MLB or helping spread but let's explore the the test that you're doing it itself because as you know there's some controversy about antibody testing most of these tests have not yet been FDA certified and then you can test ride for antibodies but those antibodies if it's not testing for the right antibodies doesn't necessarily mean that you've developed immunity no that's it that's true and effective that discussed that we're using was approved by the FDA for commercialization which means you can sell they can sell it for use in the U. S. but that the test itself that used to be very careful the test that's useful for surveillance needs to be at least have certain properties into the very very good at dot not cross reacting with other coronaviruses attest that used for political purposes it needs to make sure it picks up every single positive this test is fantastic for epidemiologic purposes it is not committed from club on the studies from that set the stage with red and also from some of the work we've done with folks here Stanford it it did that it seems to have very few false negative in the sense of producing reacting to absorb the blood that we know for sure is cook of a negative how long is this gonna take I'm not talking the the going around and picking the fingers but crunching the numbers and then showing us what they mean to all of all the singers are perfect already so I I'm I'm gonna get a dataset hopefully tonight or tomorrow and then I'm going to work hard this weekend and I I I'm a need to have a paper done Tuesday it does need to have a go through a scientific peer review process to make sure that you know how much your check my work and that that sometimes takes a little while but I'm I'm I'm hoping that I'm gonna be able to share information within a week a week or week and a half or two so what what what is the long term goal the long term goal is to see what the how widespread the cocoa with prevalence is throughout the whole country do you need this information in order to see how far along we evident we are we to reduce decide whether whether or not it's safe to start opening up to see to forecast how how where where you expect the number of cases to go in in the future all of this is really really important and you can't do you can't know those numbers you can't do this forecast without numbers like the ones that this MLB so he's gonna generate Dr J. Bhattacharya directs a program on medical outcomes at Stanford and his co managing that MLB antibodies testing research Dr thank you ms been K. next in depth the podcast on the radio dot com app and I will be back tomorrow one thirty two twenty five traffic.

"Is K. annex in delta Mike Simpson and I'm Charles Feldman Hey we're betting that it's a pretty good bet that you may be a lot more anxious today than you were yesterday were piling in anxieties top of stress on top of fear on top of cabin fever so how are you coping however we all coping will go in depth once again president trump gave a somewhat rosy view of an anti Moran malarial drug used to treat covert nineteen and once again his own scientific advisers shot down the likelihood that there is a miracle treatment so if you do get corona virus how will you be treated if your local supermarket was slowly getting back up to the regular stocking levels you some more on the shelves yesterday's safer at home water that may be caused another run so maybe the shelves are empty again if authorities promised that we don't have a food shortage so they keep saying then exactly what's going on why are people still out there buying so much group of senators made some extremely conveniently timed stock sales very early on in the outbreak ethics watchdogs crime fell about that in house the first week of remote learning going for millions of students out there sent home because the virus we are going to talk to the state superintendent but let's begin with the motional stress doctor Vale right director of clinical research at the American psychological association so a doctor right there really aren't any models I would suspect for this sort of situation in modern American times modern world times really so what advice can you give to people who then may shoot back at you and say yeah but you know your advice sounds good but what's that based on yeah thanks for having me you know this is a truly unprecedented event for most of us and our adult lifetimes and there's an incredible amount of uncertainty and it's that uncertainty that really leads to the sense of threat and danger which in turn drives the anxiety and stress and so it's critically important that people prepare themselves both physically and emotionally emotionally without panicking and so there are some things we know we can do physically washing our hands the social distancing which is really critical but we also need to prioritize their mental emotional health by engaging in self care and staying connected at least virtually with our loved ones yeah what do you do because we are social creatures by nature so you have to try and keep in touch with people yeah absolutely I think the one benefit of technology of course is that it does enable us to connect selecting the text that can be found that can be video chat that can be social media and I think we really need to make a concerted efforts right now particularly if we have loved ones that we know are prone to anxiety or mental health conditions have maybe substance use problems in the past were older adults that we now have to isolate we need to be the ones that reach out to them pro actively engage them in a social connection what do you advise to to people who have actually maybe gone past the state of being anxious and they're actually the state of being just outright scared and to be honest there's a lot of reason to be fearful and a lot of reason to be anxious right now so I don't think we need to treat these as if they're somehow abnormal this is an anxiety provoking time now if your anxiety and.

"Long precedes a Mike Simpson well you spend at least three hundred million dollars of your own money on a presidential campaign before you even appeared on the single ballot right before your big coming out party your chief rival as a major resurgence how does it feel to be Michael broom for today full full full ask him personally coming up at the bottom of the hour it's a super Tuesday super Tuesday right now that was signed from yesterday it has been an anxious week on Wall Street coronavirus has people on edge to interest rate cut by the fed was supposed to soothe fears and bring some calm Daniel Weiss director of government consulting in fiscal policy research at moody's analytics so there was a little bit of a rally after this but it doesn't seem to have works walk us through this no worries K. yeah there's a lot going on today there's a lot of people who are changing their senses about what they think is gonna happen anytime you have people changing assumptions there's a tremendous amount of volatility in the market nobody quite knows what's going on and it can sometimes take a couple days for everything to work out so with the fed basically did was they they kind of had a surprise interest rate cut today about fifty basis points or half a percentage point that's the first time that they've done that since two thousand eight which is kind of should be a kind of a bellwether for it what an extraordinary move that was some people might be looking at this is a good time to get in touch with their real estate person find out or their mortgage person find out it's it's worth refinancing but this really hurts people in retirement people who might be relying on interest from their savings there's really kind of a double edged sword here isn't there absolutely yeah I'd say what it's intended to do is is intended to increase near term spending and it has we see a big impact on long term saving so folks who are really relying on fixed income instruments to create revenue or income for them over the next couple years this is not great news for them but if you've got any type of debt outstanding you need to do any kind of borrowing obviously it's a big it's a big boost for especially in the business community what it'll do is it can I get a lot of folks some incentive to take on some of those fixed investments and maybe they weren't planning on doing because of all the volatility in the economy you know hopefully that will boost near term economic activity enough to where we don't have to have any additional rating rate cuts but you know it's totally possible given all the uncertainty out there I'm going to buy so you watch what they do number one but you also watch what they say right and trying to read into that so what a drone pals say today that spoke to you what a what is encouraging about what they did and not only did this but the members of the G. seven and several you know global central banks came out said that they're willing to do whatever it takes to you kind of nip this in the bud in terms of the corona virus risk that's a very good thing what is not so good is the fact that when we cut this from one and a half to one percent in terms of interest rate that's extraordinarily low four times of the year were the top of the business cycle so just to give some context whenever we've gone into past recessions usually the federal reserve lowers rates by about five percentage points discounted third job turned things around we can't do that this time because we're only about one percent so if things continue to get bad there's not a whole lot else that the federal reserve can do and that means that we'll have to rely on potentially fiscal stimulus to come from Washington DC next year and given the political environment in Washington DC it's very very difficult to have a lot of confidence that they'll be quick action out of Congress and the White House Daniel Weiss director of government consulting fiscal policy research at moody's analytics Daniel thanks you can find the KNX indepth podcast and radio dot com iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts coming up in just about five minutes when can I can get continues LA county's new touch screen voting systems have their first game time action so how's it been going we'll take a closer look right now the news in brief we check.

"On Mike Simpson along with Charles Feldman well you know people are we mention this before they are flocking to drugstores posco and other places the lines yeah because they were there trying to stock up on hand sanitizers antiseptic wipes and stuff like that in order to avoid this coronavirus Parral says it has seen a big increase yeah no kidding in demand and has increased production significantly it says it is prepared and not worried about running out but doesn't make that much of a difference should we be all running around trying to get to buy up this stuff with us now is Dr Richard Seidman was chief medical officer for LA care health plan so doctor I keep hearing messages day after day hour after hour from the CDC and others saying wash your hands and if you can't do that use hand sanitizer but you can't get the hand sanitizer now so what do you do well I think we should take the advice we're hearing from the CDC and wash our hands I understand that people are reacting and thinking they should do something in addition to the basic precautions we should all be taking but simply in the absence of being able to find to rail or other antiseptic wipes washing your hands is the best advice in one of several everyday precautions we should be taking and just not psych train yourself not to touch your face as much which is hard I don't think we realize how much we touch our faces but you can try and stop I think that's true but I like the sense that we should seek to reduce the frequency with which we touch our faces it's not easy to change a lifelong habit and apparently we all touch our faces and much more than we think we do but if we can consciously try to reduce that habit that would also help reduce the spread of all diseases not just the concern about the current affairs and and then I'm sure his news to to some people I mean if you're in a room in someone's coughing and sneezing not good but is that actually compared to how many times most people touch their faces is that less of a of a vector for transmission than touching your own face well it all depends on where the source of the virus in question is so if you're in a room full of people the advice is to do your best to maintain at least a three foot distance between you and everybody else particularly someone who may be actively coughing or sneezing hopefully there following the advice for all during these days which is to cover your cough or sneeze ideally with your elbow not with your hand and certainly we want to use tissues and blow our noses and wife are mild spied ideally cover your cough in the elbow because then it's not on your hands where you would spread it to other people what I've been saying lately is fist bumps and elbow bumps are cool into this is a good time for us to maybe understand and be a little less cordial and shake hands a little less and do a little more fist pumping an elbow bumping as you train yourself to to not keep touching your own face well I'm certainly trying but just like everybody else it's a habit but every time I do it I say you know that I should do that less but it is very disappointing so easier to avoid close contacts stay home when you're sick keep your kids out of school when they're sick and wash your hands frequently so we revisit masks because we even have the Surgeon General tweeting out over the weekend stop buying masks there for people who are sick so they don't get other people sick not necessarily for you walking around trying not to get sick yes stop buying masks the greatest indication for masses for health care workers and people at home taking care of patients with corona virus or suspected corona virus but flocking to the stores and and searching online to buy masks to prevent the spread of the infection is not advised by any of the public health authorities told a freaking out too much well I hesitate to comment everybody is responsible for their own their own reactions but I would caution people to think about how they respond to each and every year to the cold and flu season influenza remains a much greater risk to the general public getting a flu shot is core to that and many.

"Mike Simpson along with Charles Feldman well California's communications systems haven't really held up all the best when confronted with natural disasters you know earthquakes knocking out cellphone towers cutting off millions of people whose mobile phones are there only phone lines preemptive power cuts in extreme fire weather where you know if that did it did the same thing really right when fire departments are trying to send out evacuation orders well now there is an effort under way to fix these issues yeah a group of California Congress members seven it is the emergency reporting act in the hopes of significantly boosting the resiliency of emergency communications Jessica Rosen were souls are commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission so we need some help here what's with this act do how sure well thank you for having me you know what we are seeing wild fires out west hurricanes along the coast with alarming frequency and Californians know it better than others it means our communications often fail in a disaster if you can't reach out for help if you can't reach out for nine one one that's a problem and so I think as a result the Federal Communications Commission needs to work with Congress to update our policies so that our networks work in disaster and this bill call the emergency reporting act is a terrific start and it's California representative to have introduced it what would you do so first it would standardize how we evaluate any disaster where there are service outages it seems amazing right now but we don't have a standard reporting functions for those kind of things and if we standardize some of the reporting practices what will be able to do is see what worked in any disaster see what didn't work and figure out how to change our policies no it's more technical than that but it's a great benefit is that it's standardized how we deal with each of these disasters and make sure that we learn from them and do better the next time what about practical things like putting generators cemex to the cell towers sensing some cases they're they're they're just not right I mean if you think about our network infrastructure for emergencies is really built for an age when there was a phone on the wall with a curly cord right it was built for wired to lessen the error and it's you know it's long past us by more than half the households in this country are wireless only we can figure out how everyone of those wireless phone has a fighting chance of working in disaster and so consumers are gonna to figure out how to keep it charged for also going to figure out how to bring back up generators to more cell towers to the cell towers themselves work when the unthinkable occur Jessica I have one of those phones at home with the curly cord I know all those lines they tend to work in disaster and an electrical for a great may prove to be one of the safer things to do to keep that court in that service up that we're going to recognize a lot of households are still not gonna do that but here's the thing though I remember after nine eleven a lot of the things that we are talking about now that California and probably applies to many other states about emergency communications that kind of thing they were being talked about back in nine eleven what's taking so long so I think that we have been slow to recognize the fundamental change in how we communicate I mean we rely now on wireless phones on texting on always on internet access on your phone in your pocket in your palm in your purse like never before we've got to update all of our emergency response to reflect those communications realities and you know if you need object lessons California has lots of them but you could also look to Porter Rico and hurricane Maria you can look to what happened on the east coast with superstorm sandy we gotta take everyone of these incidents and use it as an opportunity to learn how we do better your source the phone companies to to keep their towers powered or is this just a like Hey you should do this I think what he needs to have a conversation about that and I know the California public utilities commission is starting one when people are disconnected in disaster they can't call nine one one they can't reach for help they can't locate friends and family we're making all of ourselves less safe we don't do something about it Jessica Rosen were some commissioner Federal Communications Commission yeah I do I have one of those old lan lines but you know welcome to your house well you know we've talked to in and she just said it to we've talked to lots of experts here say that in an emergency they work better generally start then cellphones some keeping good even though it curls all around my arms trip on it eight times a week when can extend up to continue some of the stories you may have missed but we did not.
