He was the offensive coordinator and actually Mike Shanahan was another offensive coordinator there. Oh, wow. Mike Shanahan was 26 years old. He came in there. We had not won a game the year before when O ten and one. And Shannon comes in. He's 26. And so after the games, he'd want to hang out with the players. So we take him out to the bars, and we wouldn't get carded, and he would. So to give you some idea of how long I've known some of these people around the league, but yeah, spurrier was amazing. Just one of the most creative offensive minds and I actually started out as a quarterback there in Steve's for your came in, watch me throw the ball one day and I became a wide receiver the next day. So it gave you some idea of where all this has led by my claim to fame, I guess, at the university of Florida was in my very first game that I ever played against rice university 9 yard touchdown. I threw a 99 yard touchdown as a quarterback, which has become like the greatest trivia question. Who holds the NCAA record for the longest touchdown pass and you literally would have to go down 27 million people before you got to my name and so if you know any answer to that when you can win any bar fight. Chris, I got to ask you about some of the big themes that will be top of mind as we begin this new NFL season and I can't stop reading about deshaun Watson and how the NFL and the Players Association have finally we should agreement. We understand it will be an 11 game suspension without pay, a fine of $5 million and this mandatory evaluation by behavioral experts with some kind of treatment program. Who comes out of this looking okay, who comes out of this looking bad? I don't think anybody comes out of this looking okay. It's a tough day for the National Football League and deshaun Watson, it's just disappointing. I have to tell you that I did not see this coming. I met with deshaun Watson, a lot of times and I actually had made the comment that out of the top ten kind of guys in the league. I would have had deshaun Watson on my list. There was a moment in time when there were hurricanes and Houston or something happened flooding whatever it was. And there were three ladies in the worked in the lunch room. Obviously didn't have very much at all. And all of them had their houses ruined. And he, if I remember the story correctly, gave his first paycheck ever for those three ladies. And I remember what an impression he made and so this is one of those that we all make mistakes, but this one fits on the high end of the mistakes and so you hope that deshaun Watson through all that therapy and all the things that he'll be going through can get his life back together and move forward, but for the National Football League, there's nothing that any of us want more than to bring women into the family, right? Whether it's NBC, whether it's the NFL that that's the greatest, the growth potential for the National Football League, the more and more and more that we're seeing women involved with football, whether it be coaching, whether it be officiating, whether it just be as fans. And that's a really exciting prospect for all of us. And this is a setback. I mean, there's just no question about it. It's a setback. And I think it's a big reason why you saw Roger Goodell and the NFL want to maximize the penalty and yet what they also didn't want to do was land back in court. "And my grandfather had so much loyalty to the organization but because he saw thought so highly of mike shanahan. There was a part of him. That thought. maybe. I'm gonna go to denver with mike shanahan when he took that job because they saw through such a similar lands in he ended up staying in san francisco but all the core things that kyle's build in that program on a lot of the things that i think we stand for. It's amazing how much influence that has on us. And how many realize what a small network of people it really is. 'cause that's really why i got a chance to interview with mike. And kyle was bruce. Allin brought my name up but then also when when my grandfather reached out to to coach shannahan he said hey i got a grandson and if nothing else you know. He said hey. Well if he's like yours if you're like him we'll go and bring in and let him compete for a job but like the amount of just layers in the different connections that we have. It's it's pretty eerie and it sounds like I ask for those things from the niners too and they didn't say yes that kyle. What the hell not kidding. You know what's funny though. Peter is his kyle. He they had done such a good job in atlanta. And you know this has been publicized or whatever. But in a lot of instances you almost get punished for doing well in the playoffs nowadays. Sure you know. And it's like the further you go because of the way that it's kind of structured the last thing that the carousel almost well. Yeah it's crazy. Because like i actually got some advantages because we lost and basically a play in game our last regular season game and so when you get hired while kyle it was semantics where he kind of knew he was going to be the niners head coach. But you couldn't officially announce it and he's focused on winning a super bowl. Well in the meantime what are we doing. We're putting together a staff. We're doing some things you're getting a chance to get. you know. Access the coaches that are looking for jobs. And it's amazing how that kind of played out where we both went through it at the same time but you realize like the success that they had in atlanta when he's doing his thing it it actually forces you to kinda start You know a little bit behind everybody. I saw the same thing with. Zach taylor a couple years ago in cincinnati and it but but to kyle's credit you know san fran that was their guy. They knew they wanted him and and he knew exactly what he wanted to. And i think you see that thing come to life with the vision and and why the ball's men writing san fran. The whole process was miserable and tough. I mean i went into a very open heaven for interviews because i grew up around the head and watched my dad and i just i knew i was so adamant that i wanna take take the wrong job And i'm just so glad that i felt that way about san francisco and they felt that way about me But of nine. It's not like the other three teams offer me So san francisco one enough or if wanted to vote that way. I wanna to jail and who knows what happens next year. You know. so that's why it's a tough league and that's why a lot of people you know as soon as you get that opportunity sometimes you never wanna look back because at opportunity doesn't always come again but i also there's a very fine line. That opportunity comes in you're in a bad situation in a might only be one year just because they never get it again. So that's why. I watched guys goes to the same stuff i watched. My dad go through in a workout and i watched it not work out in washington. And that's some of the stuff. I've learned that. Have so much respect for coaches and people like my dad. People like bill check. People like sean but you gotta realize that they're also fortunate like did not. Everything's gonna play out that way always and you got to believe in yourself. You got to believe in the people around you but you can't just be obsessed with the results Yes all i think about is when a super bowl and trust me. I don't need to sit here and tell you how much east of me. But he also you can't make decisions chasing that 'cause it's a business isn't guaranteed as a team sport. "May 3rd 2021 Side recluse and Kathy Liam Dave Logan Millennial grants. Here is well, we have George Payton. GM of the Broncos join us a little bit earlier. And as I just, said Nancy Wilson. Of heart. In this last hour. Pop down with us. She's set to release her first ever solo album entitled You and Me, That'll Be On May 7th via her new label, Curia music and a lot of that. Particular album. Was maybe all of it done last year in the midst of covert, which we've wasted. A lot of artists do that. You know they were home anyway, and they have a studio at home, and they just started writing and recording. And that's what this record was born out of the pandemic three or 3941. So what was the drama between reason? Elway? Move. Log story. Yeah, Yeah, I mean, I think the men it was a multi layer, multilayered drama. I think the bottom line was John. Um Wasn't entirely comfortable with the offense that the offense was Uh, how many phrases constricted. Him and their ability to throw it and make big plays. He also felt like late in the game that the staff just sort of said okay. Do your thing and win this game, And he did that. More often than not right. This is a quarterback that mean the Hall of Fame quarterback that is forever remembered as You know, being able to bring teams back and win games. I think there was the you know. Then there was this story line between Dan and Mike Shanahan course. Mike's first year with the Broncos was 84 years, the receiver coach. Then that he was promoted to be the quarterback coach, Ultimately the offensive coordinator and at one point Dan accused Mike of Basically scripting plays with John. And not letting Dan know what the place were. And the relationship at that point was so bad between John and Dan. That you know it put my kingdom In an interesting position. So Mike and then Dan Fire Mike So you can. You can just imagine after Mike went to San Francisco On Ben had a chance. I mean, he was offered the job in 93. Turned it down because he didn't wanna be the guy to follow Reeves because of all the stuff that had happened. Wait. Philips took the job for two years. And then had Boland. I mean, I honestly haven't put too much thought into it. I You know all those things get sad at the end of the day. You know I'm a 40 Niner. I'm here to play quarterback. I'm here to be the quarterback of this team and Every day. I go out there and try to prove that to my teammates and my coaches on at the end of the day. That's what really matters. So You know the people in this building. I love them. I love every one of them is just like I said it before. It's a great group to be around Jon Kyl. I think they've talked to the media and said what they've said I I love those guys for it. So it's some Yes, This is what I want to be. And I love it here. Jimmy, you've had the kind of said And watch. Ah lot of this season and I don't know I'm not sure. On Social media's much his Children. Something like that. But you know, you should know where. Of speculation. You know, recording, Ashley dropped this guy or they should trade this guy and that should trade drop below and I mean very competitive. Just die. Yeah, that's that's what I really care about and all the speculation gonna be out there. But at the end of the day, you Scott do your job coming to work every day. Come with him coming with a good mind set and we got a lot of guys with that mindset, and it's fun to be around. You kind of answer this, but your teammates Shanahan talk a lot about how you're the same guy every day. No matter you know what's going on. But with all the criticism with the injuries, you ever have your moments where you're just like this kind of sucks. Absolutely. Yeah, I mean being injured, you know, prior my career never really had injuries, so didn't really know how to deal with it. But it's kind of one of those things that it comes with The comes with sport, I guess, but you just gotta do I have to do my best to prevent it and do whatever I can in the off season to get my body, right. Tol handle the whole season and just, you know, get my mind right in that way. But, yeah, just the motivation that comes with the injuries, though. It's something that Is I unlike anything I've ever had. Just, you know, you're not out there with you guys out there with the teammates. It's um as a quarterback. It's really hard and I hate the feeling. I hate very helpless feeling. But at the end of the day, I just wanna be out there. My guys battling on the field. Jimmy I looking back on when you return from that ankle injury. In retrospect, Do you feel like you came back too quick. I? Yeah. I mean the first time. Yeah, yeah, the first time just like I was just saying, I think I went two weeks without being out there. And it was just something that I don't like that feeling didn't I wasn't used to it. And, Yeah, I just want to be out there with my guys. And you know, maybe I rushed him. Maybe I didn't. But I wouldn't. I wouldn't change it. Jimmy in 2018 when you when you had the knee, he did some things in terms of working with Mike Shanahan a little bit and some of that stuff, but also you were still kind of new to the offense. You didn't have a whole lot of games on your belt. How different Where was it going through it this year in terms of your approach while you weren't out there just did what you could learn and what you are trying to gather to to make yourself better for next year. I was pretty history. Cool being up in the box. I would have the call sheet with me trying to go through plays and I No, just mentally being in the game as much as possible talking tow guys who were up there with me about the game, and there's little things that you could do that having been injured for this most of season. I had a lot of time up there, so we got to figure out some things that could help me in the future and tried to make the best of situation that wasn't along Those lines. Give me that camera during games with sometimes find you up up in the stands next to George or next. Oh, Richard Sherman. And you seem to be jotting notes from time to time. Um is that part of the call sheet? Is that something different? Where did you pick that up, and then? You know, sitting next to Richard Sherman, his knowledge on defense. How valuable was that to have that inside probably in your ear during during the game. I was actually just about to say that I sat next to Sherm, especially these last couple of games. We sat right next to each other and Really tried to pick his brain just in a casual way, You know, but at the same time it was. It was very Very insightful. I mean, sure, he's a very bright guy obviously knows both sides of the ball and just talking. You know, a schematic scheme. Whatever it is I He has a very interesting outlook on it. Honestly, I told on this side yesterday at the game I was like, Dude, I've learned so much. Just in his last couple of weeks of talking to you because there's a quarterback you know you you think you know, defense is and you think you know what they're thinking. But now you talk to a corner. He's been doing it for so long. It was. It was very insightful. I learned a lot and Share my shares my favorite teammates have ever been with. He just die. All those guys you love to be around love his attitude, love how it comes in every day..

"Yes, God. Happy New Year to you, but a long season man. Been good, though, been along seasonal long year. Nice to be able to put the year itself into the rear view mirror. But before we get to that spot, we've got a We got a regular season. We've got to wrap up this week and one of the interesting things that came out this week and we talked about this a little bit earlier with Ian Rappaport here on the show the Dolphins finding out that the guy who could ride in to save the day is not gonna be available to them this week. Ryan Fitzpatrick testing positive. It's an interesting dynamic that's been going on there in Miami. The fact that to a has done well, but there's already been a couple of times and Brian Flores is called on Fitzpatrick's come riding in to save the day. That's all That's strange spot for a guy to be in like this, Patrick. He's handled it well, but moving forward. Obviously, you know, are they gonna be able to do it without having their safety net? They're gonna have to do is find a way to do it without Ryan Fitzpatrick. You know, it is interesting that you have a quarterback that's selected, you know, Top five in the draft. And when he gets into games he gets that did it into a rut that they tend to want to save him with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now I understand what Brian Flores is thinking he is trying to solve which wins, so you can't be mad that He comes in and says, Listen it first. If you know if two was strongly I'm gonna put in this Patrick and try to at least salvage that win and then get back to our next week so his his philosophy is not It hasn't really, you know, it's a little flawed because you you're not allowing the gods to grow and get into situations where you have to work himself out of it. But the doctors were knocking on the door of the playoffs, so obviously it worked. Um, but, you know, right fist patrons. Not there. The two of us gonna happen. Find a way to display a full game and understand that even if they're down by 17 points, he's gotta find a way to flip that switch. And come back and try to save his team. You get to a situation where you've got some teams that are out there that have already, you know, wrapped up whatever they're going to wrap up. There's nothing specifically to play for in week, 17 and some starters end up getting arrested. You get that extra little charge. Summit say, Do you take the Momenta? Muay? What's your feeling on that specifically for a final week of the regular season? Wow. This guy is great question, because I've been in both situations where and 1996 we had to buy and we rested. Right guys. Uh, too long. And we end up losing a Jacksonville and the divisional round and we just never got our mojo back. You know where 13 in three. We just never got it back. We had lost it, and we just figured we could flip a switch. This doesn't happen That way.
