Super Bowl Bound: 49ers and Chiefs

"Did bill. We made it to the Super Bowl. You me and Jimmy Garoppolo. I feel I I may have sweat more watching the NFC championship game. That Jimmy Garoppolo actually swept playing being in the NFC championship game. Bill Barnwell is a senior football writer at ESPN and the host of the bill. Barnwell show so after two weeks Of Extremely Exciting Football Championship weekend did not disappoint niners and chiefs fans disappointed pretty much everyone else or at least anyone who wanted close close games both favorites dominated so let's start with the most dominant team the San Francisco Forty niners bill win the niners packers met earlier earlier. This season. Aaron Rodgers had one of the worst games of his career threw for one hundred and four yards. Tonight he threw for three hundred twenty six yards But the result wasn't much better. Why is that okay? So the first time these two teams played the niners won with an absolutely dominant. Pash Josh Rush Nick. Bosa and his teammates knocked down Aaron Rodgers ten times on Sunday. The only knockdown Aaron Rogers twice and while they did hold them without a first down conversion in the first half both of those games the packers movable pretty consistently I should say after after halftime instead the forty niners otherworldly in a different way on Sunday they ran the ball forty two times for two hundred eighty five yards and four. We're touchdowns averaging nearly seven yards per carry to put that in context. ESPN has a stat called expected. Points with measures how each play impacts team's James Chances of scoring on a given the forty niners racked up the second most rushing. EPA for any team in a game this season and and the most for any single team in a playoff game over the last decade just narrowly beating out the prior record holder. which just happened to be the forty niners? Twenty wanting twelve playoff win over. The Green Bay Packers would Colin Kaepernick. Ran For one hundred. Eighty one rushing yards. So they're leading rusher tonight. I was not Colin Kaepernick. It was re Moster who ran for two hundred and twenty yards by himself. were good has hat trick the first half of the NFC championship game deserves a hat trick of field grade baby bill. Will I am guessing. A decent amount of football fans hadn't heard Ramos before tonight. Okay so you mustard is basically it accident accident in football terms but it's such a cool story so the Shanahan offense has a history of unearthing obscure running back and turning them into stars going back to Mike Shanahan stays in Denver but even among those backs most particularly remarkable case. Liners did everything they could to find a different running back over the past a couple of years. They hand picked a runner who they traded up to nab in the two thousand seventeen draft never played a game for the team. They signed Jerick McKinnon Torres. ACL He's collected more than and twenty one million dollars for the niners without ever playing a single game for the team. This offseason they added. Kevin Coleman from the Falcons who suffered an injury in the first half and that opened up the door from western and most of its story is easy to root for. You heard him talk about it. After the biggest game of his life on Sunday crazy that I've been on seven. Different teams actually still have cut dates every before every game a look at the dates when I got cut not everybody can can deal. Would that type of stressing the pain and agony I went through. I kept the faith to not only myself but whoever gave me the opportunity is organization has done a great job most are made the niners roster as a special teamer at first but after he looked good in limited time last season they gave him a three year extension after playing. Well this season most are just became the first running back. NFL history to top two hundred rushing yards and scored four rushing touchdowns in a single game. That's never happened in the playoffs playoffs before pretty good for a guy who was really an afterthought until the two thousand eighteen season. What's just remarkable? Bill is those two hundred twenty rushing yards. Were nearly three times as many yards as Garoppolo the night as quarterback past for which made for a remarkable stat sheet. There was a point in this football game where according to ESPN stats and Info. Jimmy went ninety four minutes in real time without attempting a pass so I have to ask going into the Super Bowl. Is that a sustainable offensive approach. I mean we all had that friend and in our twenties who got by succeeded solely because they were good looking right now that friend is Jimmy. Garoppolo I mean in the divisional round. He barely through through the football in the conference championship game. He barely through the football. We saw a similar situation with Ryan. Tannehill right over the first two weeks of his post. The season and when Tennessee ran into an offensive juggernaut with the chiefs their offense with Danny Hillis not able to accelerate into a higher gear. Now of course Garoppolo is the one who has to face the chiefs unless the forty niners can shut down the Kansas City. Passing game with their pass rush which isn't out of the question they're going to need to throw the football more quite a bit more. We've seen the niners succeed in games or Garoppolo and to throw the ball at ton with the Saints Win. Maybe as a notable for example but since Garoppolo through that interception against the Vikings in the divisional round cow Shanahan has called seventy one runs against just twelve passes passes even if the niners do end up throwing the ball effectively against the chiefs. It's clear that Shanahan doesn't WANNA put the game on Garoppolo shoulders unless absolutely necessary and that in itself is telling throughout the game bill packers fans were frustrated. Understand police and they seem to be taking out some of their wrath on the coaches arguing. They should have devised better game. Plans to both run the ball more and stop the run and do you think there's anything that Matt Leflore or the Packers Defensive Coordinator Mike Patton could have done differently in this game. Yeah I think so I think to be fair. Shanahan might just ask pedants number. It just felt like you is several steps ahead of the packers defensive coordinator and when pen and tried to adjust it just never seemed to catch up and work there. There was one play I think in the second quarter was a microcosm of everything that went wrong for the packers in this game. They came out in their nickle package with five defensive backs against the forty niners base. He's too back offense which created the size mismatch. The niners pitched the Baltimore and not only did he have a huge hole but he made both safeties with on their tackle attempts downfield win for about thirty yards. pedants struggled to put his players in positions where they could succeed and meanwhile leflore didn't coach like a guy who was a seven point underdog. The packers punted. I believe on their first drive on fourth and one from the fifty yard line. We know the packers are enormously more effective offense with Aaron Aaron Jones on the field but the floor still Jamal Williams their backup running back. Play over thirty percent of the offensive snaps and he didn't really take advantage of move the niners movement Richard Sherman. That was really fascinating during the regular season for the niners and during the vast majority of his time in Seattle Sherman signed up for almost every every snap asked the left cornerback. Defense playing against the right side of the offense. The niners started the game on Sunday. Which chairman on the opposite side of the field on the right side of the defense on the left side of the offense against devante items and while Sharon didn't travel to the left side very frequently? He did do it a few times during the first half. The second half Adams was able to be isolated Sherman over the top for a huge play downfield. I think that played about half of his snaps on either side of the field. I would have liked to have seen for trying to isolate him against German a little more often and take his chances with

"Go to the n._f._l. Let's start this in green bay. Packers and new head coach matt leflore and aaron rodgers not on the same page early in camp. The coach likes can't likes camp likes working out with other teams. Here's what aaron rodgers said said about doing a joint practice with texans. I wouldn't mind if they didn't do it for another fourteen years and then he said that the offensive work is of great value because schematically. There's not a lot there and he doesn't like the risk of injury. Is this just one of those things or is this a real problem between rogers and the floor. Take it or shake it. Take it real problems. Take take take it though she sleep but i think when you think when you think about what i said the other day about out joint practices. It's a no no. No one wants to do that but coaches then only ones you. There's there's nothing to gain from it. The iran tell you 'cause. Let's coaches are stupid. He just do stuff. They just day or stupid. I told you this the other day and raja's comes out and basically backs up exactly exactly what i'll say it. No one wants to do that. You risk injury. You're getting no real work at all and it is going to be a power struggle for this young head head coach and matlock floor in aaron rodgers. It's going to be a power struggle in math going to have to cave in or else. He's going to get fire yeah. I was just gonna say if you're a brand new head coach jay first time head coach and all of a sudden you gotta go coach your first team as the head guy that's one thing you've got to be the head coach of the green bay packers with a hall of fame quarterback. Who's in the meat prime of his career. That's a totally different thing different. Yeah it's different because ann rogers is also different. He's so cerebral. He's so questions every think think anyway. He's not just gonna go to get him on like other. Q._b.'s wills so you know skiing on the walls though skin on the wall. What do you mean it meaning matlock floor. Oh if you if you were dealing dealing with coach that came in and mike shanahan or bill parcells done something that has some skin on the wall the aaron rodgers with baal down where if there's a guy like sean mcvay say the world gets up into shining face their push mcvay a smart enough to realize that i need him to produce some let him do what he needs to do. If he's doing what he needs to do in his positive then we're gonna be okay and if it's negative it's gonna follow him. I've done everything to make him a better player. I'll keep my job. We'll get rid of him

"So go Rickie Fowler. And will the Wells Fargo, and I am looking forward to singled and state in Houston tomorrow night. It's probably the first of the playoff games that I've been really interested in to see how Houston response there early three and a half point favorite tomorrow night against the warriors in game three. I think Golden State's gonna win one of those these two games in Houston and close it out four games to one thing. I mentioned this earlier in the show. But if I didn't I think I may have mentioned it earlier in the show. But an amazing stat or an interesting stat is that Kevin Durant. Taken twenty two mid range jumpers in the first two games of the series. The whole rockets team has only taken nine mid range jumpers in whole series. You do not beat Golden State with one man ice OBE, all or to man pick and roll pick and pop just not gonna happen. I don't see it the other NBA playoff series. I'm actually I want Toronto to even the series up because I picked him. But I'm more concerned after last night as I mentioned earlier and not much interest in Portland Denver. Although watching Damian Lillard is fun. And I think Boston's going to I think Boston's gonna win this series. I think they're gonna win a long series against Milwaukee. It'll be interesting to see how Janas plays because in that game tonight two games. You got Boston Milwaukee in Denver upward limb. But see how Janas plays. He played a great second half. But now he's gonna go on the road. For a series where they gotta win one of those games in Boston. All right. Thanks to Aaron thanks to Mike Shanahan. Thanks to Andy. Poland have a great weekend back on Monday..

"But the giants have retired number for a player who was killed in World War Two. And I think a special circumstance like that. And just the tragedy of the whole thing. I think I think honoring twenty one that way would be the way to go. But. But do you agree that it's time for them to just retire some numbers or decide not to retire any numbers, but take it out of the Cowboys. Don't retire numbers. Right. I don't think anybody's gonna worth twelve but they key. The key is don't put Joe in a position like that. No win for Joe. Yeah. Even though he seemed inclined genuinely to to to do it because he he liked Haskins. And and he's very Bush. Yeah. Buddy, grow washed up guy in a bitter that that that, you know, and and you do say noted anywhere for because standing we're already be sock. Kid be turn out to be good. Yeah. It you just you. You've got a as an organization for tech the legacies and not simultaneously. Put these players into a position where the decision is theirs. It shouldn't be all right. You had something else. You wanted to talk to me about. Weekend will be the thirtieth anniversary since Bobby Beth resigned as general manager of the Redskins now couple of weeks earlier, he had pulled off a very good couple of really good draft day deals. He got earnest Byner who's only twenty six at the time straight up for Mike Olifants played a year for the Redskins out of Puget Sound that proved to be a huge picked up as Byner was a key player when they won the Super Bowl a couple years ago. They also got Gerald Riggs from the falcons he was gonna be the next to the big our backs Rigaud followed by Rodgers followed. By rigs they gave up their second rounder and a first round or in nineteen ninety throws draft when it was kind of a typical better draft. He got marks Larry in the tenth round, then swung and missed on a few guys, but he had established himself along with Joe Gibbs as a great general manager, and they seemingly were an incredible team. I mean, they and they seemingly had worked together. Well, because they're number one draft pick that year had gone in the Wilbur. Marshall peel remember, the reds can give up to two first rounders, and they agreed on that they were United on that. And they went to Jack kente cook and cook signed off on it. So it was an incredible shock when he just said, that's it. I'm out I'm leaving. And there were sources who said that it was more difficult to deal with gives at that point that gives was getting more power in the organization, but it just seemed odd timing on that and Charley Casserly took over and reading back on it. It's it's interesting just talking about Bobby Mitchell. I didn't think he was going to be a factor for that job. Because at that time he was doing more business related things for the Redskins public relations that sort of stuff not involve as much players as Charlie was. But his name came up and Tony Kornheiser road. It would have been intriguing to see Bobby Mitchell so long so loyal Redskin advanced GM, and then Michael wilbon had a quote from from Mitchell who said that, you know, hopefully. Early sometime in these final ten years of this decade. I'll get a chance to succeed or fail. Like anyone else? Maybe before long someone of color will get this position..

"Yeah. It's upsetting to me when I see some slob wearing sixty six out there for Jacoby and got didn't Tyler Palumbo. Or some- somebody like that Catalina Catalina were Grimm's number. Didn't he I think so whatever. But you know, you look at those that that's ridiculous. But you know, like the Cowboys Michael Irvin were eight bright. We're eighty eight you know, so I don't Pearson's number. I yeah. Not a hall of Famer, you know, the the point is that they they don't do that. Now, if I'm Haskins father, and I'm old enough to be his father. I would say to him. You're putting yourself in a tough position. I think you're going to be great. But this is gonna be something else that the fans are going to say, oh, wait a minute that guy put himself out there to be the next Joe size. And he's far from it. Also when he said the league done messed up another thing that's putting undue pressure on himself. So I I would advise him if I were his father don't wear it. You're you're putting yourself. I think in a very difficult position for that. Yeah. I think that's I think that's a really logical response. But but your first one is the most important one I in this is what I emphasized to. I don't think Joe should. I don't think it's Joe's call in you in part of the reason, it's not his call is because you don't wanna put him in that awkward position of having to say, no, I really don't want somebody to wear. My number doesn't matter who it is. You know, here's the other thing. I mean, there are guys that don't really care. You know? I don't I guess that you know, Rigaud might say, I don't really care, you know. Maybe wriggle might one what the guy to write a check for it. But but other than that, you know, in that's his legacies for the organization, actually, in some cases, the fans to protect the fans at remember, you know, sort of protect so that's the only part of it that that I guess I was troubled by but again like I try to picture how feel watching Dwayne Haskins rollout number seven in the opener Philadelphia. And it's like, I don't think it'll really upset me that much. This is not the most controversial number story. We've had I remember Bobby mystery. Yes, when Perea trotted out in his first minicamp, Danny worker, wearing seventy eight Matthews wearing died, and he acted like it was no big deal. Everybody went nuts over it and sunny actually told chain Matthews, look, I don't care if you wear nine when I don't think the fan base is going to like it. You're gonna put yourself in a bad position, right and openly they decide now my understanding is the only reason those guys even went out on the field with those numbers because Jay Brunetti was the longtime equipment guy was gone from the organization he would have protected those numbers because he was working for them when they won the Super Bowls. But anyway, those guys went out there that season though, there was a backup tight end name Leonard Stevens who wore forty nine and forty nine is for hall of Famer Bobby Mitchell is not just a hall of Famer, but one of the most significant athletes the history of the NFL because he broke the color line for the Redskins. He was I. African American player that they had of any significance and the first one, you know, since the team had come in the nineteen thirties..

"Somebody. He tweeted this through me, and it was a guy from Long Island who called any clearly a Redskins fan who wanted to weigh in on thighs men, and the number, you know, debate from earlier this week, and here's how that call went. This is why the Redskins all the Redskins. Bit numbers should be retired. And it's really not that complicated. Okay. You put Joe ties Ming who was a Super Bowl MVP and the first quarterback doing the Super Bowl this franchise where he's gotta take a call from a minute. Pick asking for his number. That is buffoonery. Okay. Nobody can pay the New York Yankees. Because Nikki now, okay. The reality is nobody should be wearing non number down number. Dalley? Dave. That's georgia. Numbers and honor them properly the. Wave is uniform and do this giant satisfaction? And we. Misery and now. Number. Guys. Different numbers. That's my take guys. Sorry. I had to be. So that. It's so funny because I'm gonna tell you right now. What my take was I I'm not I'm not a jersey guy. I'm not typically moved by these discussions. I mean, I I did a lot on it because it was a topic. And I guess I would prefer for them to just simplify it. In say, we got some retired jerseys and everything else is available. And I also think it's the organizations call not Joe's call I don't think they should put him in in that spot in that awkward spot. Now this guy. I mean, the Sean Taylor we shouldn't have newer giant safety. You know, asking for that jersey. When he said it that way about Sean Taylor. I actually felt in that moment. God damnit. He's right. I mean, the cat just give out and I couldn't cared less re. And I and if we see twain Haskins wearing number seven in the opener against the eagles. I don't think I'm gonna be that emotional about it. But sometimes you hear a take from a call. Or or another, you know show host. And you're like, you know, what maybe I do feel that way. Now, you can't retire all the numbers that he wants to retire. I mean, he forgot the big ones like sunny and Rigaud, and I don't even think he mentioned monk, but you can't retire. Everybody's number 'cause you'd have no numbers left boat. What's your I was curious as to what you thought about this debate earlier in the week? Well, not a Super Bowl MVP Riggins with the that Super Bowl and he's not in the hall of fame. But I do agree that size minutes. Putting a very difficult position. When a rookie calls up and says I'd like to wear your number because if Joe says, well, no, I I don't want to do that. He looks like the bad guys. So you know, it's a no win for Joe. I I agree on that. As far as numbers, go..

"But you really introduced it as a you know, what? Twenty percent part of offense a real staple of an offense in in twenty twelve. What did you make the ravens the way they played last year and Harbaugh's commitment to continue to play this way? Well, I think they have to play that way. Because that's what the quarterback can do AMIS if they're gonna go and try to change it to dropback attack or really even a play action tack. It's doing that completely. I think they're making mistake. And I think in a guy like Brown wide receiver was was a very good move. Because you're gonna have, you know, eight nine men boxes stopping the run. You gotta have somebody that has the ability to come up with the big play. If you take a look at Brown throughout his career. Even though he's not very big. He's going to make some big time place. He's got that type of speed. And I think they were just dead on what they wanna do play. Great defense a good running game and take advantage of the play action pass. Because that's you know, that's what the. Quarterback can do and he starred good, and he'll get better at you know, dropping back and throwing the ball. It just didn't happen overnight. It's going to take a good off season maybe next year, but he will get better. You know, it was funny because at the end of the interview, I think Susie asked him about, you know, the losses on on defense, obviously losing their leader, Terrell suggs in and losing the the safety Weddell. And he said, look, we're the ravens were always going to play defense. We're going to plug people in the compla- defense. And and I thought to myself man that is their identity that is been that franchises identity. Going back to the first Super Bowl that they won, you know, back in two thousand how important you had an identity zone running team..

"And if this guy can prove you can do the job, then you know, he's gonna play who drafted. Well. I mean, you you you watch this thing last weekend. Who who did you think had a great draft? You know, that's one thing that, you know, at least from my experience, I'll tell you about two or three years because he's that tells you that they know they don't know all I can tell you is that there's a lot of work that goes into it. And you know, the guys that I think you got a great guy and Kyle Smith that I just loved as young coach he was not afraid to work and study players, he wasn't afraid to to voices opinion. On what guy he thinks will be great players. And when you have a guy that really studies film that enjoys football who's a football guy. You got a chance to make a lot of the right pick. So I got the right guy in Kyle going forward. And even a guy like how I don't think. Dan Schneider is going to influence got like I think I'll is strong enough to stand up there and Bruce Allen as well. And said, hey, if you guys want to pick him year the owner, you're the GM, but this what I believe. And I think it takes a guy with that type of personality. They have a great draft were their players in this draft that you really felt strongly about in terms of you really loved the guy. You know, there's yeah. There's always those guys that there's there's always a handful of those guys that you want sometimes guys go late around that you'd think fit a role on your football team. You know, I I really liked the quarterback out of Princeton. I thought he was a guy that could be a fullback. I think he's a guy that could be a red zone quarterback. Really put some pressure on the defense, and we'll end up going to Kansas City Levette. And you know, here's a guy that I believe is taken is a free agent as an. I was gonna say I don't remember him being drafted. Yeah. No. He wasn't for agent. And it was a guy that you're saying. Okay. I think this could feel Djinnit tight end be legitimate f- position as well. And help you special teams and be a quarterback that could run the zone read probably as well as anybody in the national football. If you ever put them in the red zone he could make throws on top of it. And so there's always a guy like that. It stands out guy like that really stood out for me. You take a look at his test scores intangibles as forty speed is three cone, all those type of things that you look for in an athlete. He had all those things as a quarterback, and he was darned successful and one of the highest test scores too. He was like thirty and a desk or so anyway, guys like that you fall throughout their careers because you had such a feel for them playing in at the legion rates Princeton quarterback. John Lovett, right? Who is in Kansas City is a as an undrafted free agent. We will pay it will pay attention to that one. I'm by the way yesterday. I was watching John Harbaugh. He was on ESPN and he was being interviewed by Suzy kolber. And you know, they're talking about Lamar Jackson and them drafting marquees Brown Hollywood Brown from Oklahoma and the speed that they're putting onto their offense football team. He drafted trace McSorley at Penn State and Susie said he gonna play another position. He said, we we like him as a potential quarterback or being in some packages, you know, with with some of the stuff, and he said, look, we're we're committed to this thing. Meaning we're committed to the way we played football last year, you know, with Mark Jackson at the end of that season. What did you think of the way the ravens played offense football 'cause manage you really in? I know Cam was doing it a little bit before and red zone stuff..

"I think the main thing about having a good running game. You gotta believe in running game. And your whole team has to receivers your offense of line. You get a guy that gets gets positive yards. Just like Peterson did last year you feel like man, I got somebody that could get the job done. And so I mean, you always looking for those guys that can once it gets line scrimmaging get that extra two three yards. And that's something that we've always looked for the rest of their draft. I don't know how deep you would go with any of these guys, but they drafted west Martin a guard from Indiana in the late latter portion of the fourth round Ross, peer. Dr a guard center from Alabama coal Holcomb from North Carolina Kelvin hormone wide receiver that a lot of people thought would go earlier from North Carolina State a corner from J M U Jimmy Moreland in defensive end from Oklahoma state. Jordan, braille for'de do you have any did you have any opinions or did you see any of those guys? You know, I didn't really study them enough to really have opinion. Okay. The I heard different opinions from different people. But I did look at those guys. Those guys myself. Watch you know, twenty or thirty highlight plays on them not enough to really give you my opinion. But you liked sweat a whole lot in terms of his upside. And you feel the same about MacLaurin the wide receiver from Ohio staff. Yeah. I really liked those guys and on Haskins. I mean you've shared with us. You know, what you think the concerns would be? But also what the strengths are. Is it a guy does your gut tell you? It's a guy that's gonna take a little while and that the organization needs to be patient with once to anytime, you're on a different system from college, and pro football, it's been take a little while it won't take long to figure out how easy it is. For a guy like asking to stepping up into the pockets slide be able to go through progressions how quickly does but you'll see very very quickly, or at least the first month is a natural as gonna take a little bit longer and process of you know, going through. Through your your rates your coverages, and is something that takes some time. But some guys can do it very quickly other guys it takes a little bit longer. But the thing that he has such great arm strength. He such physical player that you know, he can make all the throws as soon as you figure out if he can processing quickly go from first second third receiver. And he does that then you've got somebody very special. But you do think that it's one of those things because what I'm hearing from you is you get through a few mini camp and training camp practices. You're going to have a really good sense. As to you know. What he's capable of. Or how long it's going to take. Without a question. I think, you know, very quickly on, you know, this is gonna take awhile. But it doesn't mean a guy can't get it. Right by you know, what you're saying half a season. And you may go half a season saying my God. This guy has picked it up record -ly or just the opposite. You know? This guy's gonna is gonna take some more time we have we can see the physical attributes. But you know, the process of being a quarterback in national football is more just great arms rate than being physical guy, and, you know, call place. I mean, you gotta go through the process very quickly and very few guys can do it. And once you have one of those guys try not to lose them look on there. There've been so many reports over the last going back to the night before the draft the day of the draft the days after and I'm sure you're familiar with some of them about how Haskins was a Dan Snyder. You know, put his fist down on the table. This is our guy, and you know, I've learned and from a lot of the reporting out there that that not all the football people neces-. -sarily were were in line with with you know, Haskins. Fifteen do you have you know?.

"But you know, Alex is really unique. I mean what he can do running. He's got such a skill set. And I really don't know his ability to drop back in with a conventional pro-style attack because Kansas City, they would change your game plans week in week out briefly what they did on offense. And I think that's what Jay was trying to do with him. And I think it takes time for you know, the head coach and the quarterback to get in sync really figure out what somebody's really good at until you spend some time with them. All right back to. Askins for moment. Then I'll move onto to Monto sweat 'cause I want to get your thoughts on him as a pass rusher would Haskins if you had had to put together a board this year of quarterbacks. How would you have rated them? At least the guys that went, you know for second round. And I'm talking about, you know, Murray, obviously, Daniel Jones, drew lock Dwayne Haskins. How would that board have fallen? Like, I said the only reason I hesitate a little bit is because the big question to me is the intangibles of the quarterback. I mean, what is the guy made of? So let's judge it on talent on what you saw on on film only. Okay. You take a look at a guy like Haskins say, you know, he can make all the throws. He's big he's strong. You know, they say he's really into football. And he's easy guy to deal with the only thing I didn't see I didn't see a pro style offense and the guy with the ability to just kind of shuffle step kind of go to a process and and be able to dump the ball very quickly. And that doesn't mean he can't do it. It's just the style of offense. They ran was much different than he's much different than he's going to see in the National Football League. And it'll be interesting you'll see very quickly as you go through the mini cats, and you go through the, you know, the preseason games. Exactly. His ability to do those things because it comes out very quickly. Because every quarterback you have you find out in the first month month, or so what this guy can do how easy it is for him to slide to go through the process of quarterback to go through and go through his proper progressions. What did you think of Daniel Jones going six to the giants? Well, you here's a policy drop back quarterback in my opinion. You know, we probably didn't have this skill around them that a lot of quarterbacks do have then have to pass protection. But this guy is ready to or he will be ready in my opinion to step into a offense that has a pro pro attack because that's what he's been doing throughout his career. And obviously with many background at the coach and the system that he's got he's been looking at that day in day out, you know, practices games. And I think he'll be more NFL ready. Does he have the armed talented Haskins has no not anywhere close the strength..

"But if you take a look at his play, very impressive, you know, very impressive guts, God given skills bulletin brush into quarterback and playing run. And I think it's gonna have a great future fell. All right. Let's get to the quarterbacks which the quarterbacks did you like in which the quarterbacks would you have hesitated on? Well, that's one of the things that it's really hard unless you see the intangibles because you can always see an athlete, but you don't know how he handles himself. And so you can see like if you're talking about Haskins, you see a big strong guy. Great arm strength. You know, he's not a scrambler is not gonna make a lot of plays on the run. By a lot of good things about him as a person and can add translate the National Football League. Does he have the ability to step in the pocket and shuffle? You know, he's not running a pro attack it so you have to project a little bit where this guy will be in a year or six months or two years. And but you do have a big powerful smart guy, what big arm strain, the has the ability to make all the throws with no effort. Now. The question is will he will he feel comfortable in a pocket? It's going to be a little different dealing Astle football league with those small windows and not having that type of skill. All around him that he had at a while state. At least the difference between the skill level between the offense and players defensive players us going against the you're not gonna have guys as wide open as he did when he was at a lousy. Is that your biggest concern about him under pressure in a pocket and creating more time in the area of the pocket because he won't be a guy that will that will extend plays outside the pocket with his legs. Is that your number one concern or not well number one? You know, how states have good football team. So they've got some great skill around him. Not only in the backfield wide receivers tight ends and great offense of light. So when he goes back, you know, he's used to certain amount of protection, you don't have to step up. You don't have to slide as much as some players do at to respect of college. And so you don't really see it. So you don't know. I'm not saying he can't do it. You just haven't seen them. Do it. We can we got which you'll have to an footballing. Is J's system. A good system for him. What all depends. What system Jay's using using the system Alex Smith Kirk cousins, you know, what to do with Robert, you know, at least a little bit. What was done you know, in two thousand twelve season. I think Jay is, you know, especially last show with Alex Smith, you know, he changed his offense of scheme relative what he was doing compared to years past with Kirk. So I think is ability to do whatever he wants to do. And he's going to have to be able to just if he's not comfortable being able to slide into POC and do some things that those drop quarterbacks do, by the way, just as an aside. You know, one of the things that I found surprising. And I think I talked to you during the course of the year, and I forget if it was on the podcast or off it. I I was not I it would. There was a disconnect for me in what J was trying to do with Alex. There weren't a lot of boots. There wasn't a lot of early downplay action. There wasn't. A lot of quick game. There was dropped back. And there was a lot of RPO. But it almost seemed like it wasn't what Alex Smith should have been able to do. Well, I would have thought maybe I'm wrong. This is why it ask you. I would've thought some of the stuff that Kirk did with Gruden especially in the quick game stuff in the play action in the boot stuff would have been good for Alex. They didn't run a lot of that last year. Why do you think that was you know, I really don't know?.

"And I warned you it was there that there was gonna be a delay. And it was a two hour twenty minutes. But it was a good win for the NATs. They brought in Sean Doolittle for a four out save and I was watching the game. And I thought it was interesting that Bob enough P indi. Equated that that they thought it was possible that he would come out come out in the eighth to get a more than three out save because this was a game that they had to have you know, were were on may second in. There was a desperation to win that game. I know it had been some time since Doolittle had pitched. And I know it wasn't the first time that that he'd been asked to pitch in the eighth and get more than three outs. But but bear clawed struck out two and one of the singles had given up was an infield single. Plus, it was Goldschmidt right hander coming to the plate. Anyway, do little done. I mean Goldschmidt did hit one foul a mile. Yeah. The concourse a mile, but he got it done in the NATs rebel to avoid avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of Saint Louis with once again not much offense to speak of now. After the game came the news that the team had fired pitching coach Derek Lil little. Quist and Rizzo made the announcement Mike, Mike Rizzo their general manager made the announcement saying quote, we felt that both the rotation and the bullpen. We thought we had some flaws in there. We thought that there were preparation issues in there. And we thought we wanted to get a new message and anew voice closed quote. Minor league pitching coordinator, Paul men heart takes over now. By the way, some irony last night. They're very good pitching coach for many years. Mike Maddox was in the building. Because now the cardinals pitching coach, I don't know much about Lilla quest. You can tell me about him. But it strikes me as maybe the first attempt at a sacrifice to help jump. Start a turnaround from this disappointing start. And if they continue to struggle there may be another sacrifice coming. Yeah. When you think I I do think it's that actually it was I think it was Tom Boswell who asked Rizzo about that pointing out, you know, typically, this is the first. First step when you see something this early. It's kind of the first step towards the manager Rizzo denied that he showed faith in Martinez. But yeah, I mean, it doesn't feel so much because it's so early not not that it's early in the season. But like if you liked little quiz last year, which they may or may not and I think Ken Rosenthal actually got on the nationals about this. Why are you firing him a month in this definitely feels like okay? This team is under achieving. We have to do something right now sense reports have come out that people. I don't wanna use the word lazy though, I actually have seen that were thrown at thrown around a little bit. I I can't say that I can't attest to that. He was apparently very hands off type layers a quote unquote players coach and sometimes that came across as not doing enough to get the job done. So that was kind of one of the things that got an that's what you heard a lot. We need different message going there. We need we need different things we want someone more hands on. And this guy's apparently very hands on though, it's interesting that they talk about Rizzo talked a lot about how the players know him when most of the players in the rotation and the bullpen at this point didn't go through the nationals minor league system. Like, I think there's players that were -quired. Yeah. It was five players who actually came up through the minors through the nationals most of them have been acquired outside. So I think a lot of these people don't really know men heart that well, he's apparently I heard the word change of whisper last night. So we'll see change up whisper. Yes teaches everybody. Does that? Well, I mean, we'll see how it goes..

I would say the Brier gate location is my favorite we all wheels. And I also came out here for our Super Bowl par party last year that we through with this station. So certainly. This is our favorite location. And if you make your way out here, it might be your favorite location as well. Of course, we got Monday night football on tonight. Panthers saints. I'm trailing by thirty points in my fantasy league. And I have Michael Thomas Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara all going in tonight's game. So, you know, I'll definitely be watching. In addition to Monday night football. The Avs are also in action, and they are taking on the New York Islanders. So couple of different sporting events for you to feast your eyes on here at back, east bar and grill, and certainly a lot of good food to just straight feast on if you'd like to get all interactive on the show two eight six zero zero four six that is the text line. Our twelve days of ticks, MS contest continues today as I am giving away a a. I'm giving away half season tickets to the Rocky Mountain vibes. A game to each of the home games for the vibes up until the midway point of this upcoming season. You probably knew what I was saying immediately. Just sounds really weird when I say it, but it's an awesome prize, and the vibes are awesome for hooking up with it. And you're going to be awesome for winning it. So that's coming up a little bit later on in the show also later on in the show Woody page. We'll talk about his piece in today's gazette in just a moment. But Woody page has graciously accepted my invitation to join me on this show, and he will do so at four thirty five. So what we'll do is. We'll do this segment you and Sam Farnsworth will come on after that to give his opinion on the Broncos and everything that's going on. Then we'll have Woody at four thirty five then wheels, and I will do crunch time to wrap up our. Hour number two. So now that you've got the. The gist of what we are doing here. Let's. Proceed with this. If you missed it. He's pages piece today in the cassette. Saying that John Elway met with Mike Shanahan last December. To see if he would like to be the next old the head coach of the Denver Broncos come back to the organization coach the team. I'm getting rid of veins then. In a separate meeting. Mike Shanahan spoke with Kirk cousins. And said. And Kirk cousins, I should say said that not only will I follow you to Denver. If you go, Mike. I will sign in Denver, and I will sign for a discount just to make sure that we can get it done. Now with John Elway presented this idea. Reportedly to Joe Ellis. Joe Alice balked at the idea and the whole thing was dead. And here we are with the Denver Broncos being eliminated officially from postseason contention. It was technically on Sunday with the titans win by the beginning of the end was Saturday night against the Browns before we get into all of this stuff. Because I know you have a lot opinions on it. Vance Joseph spoke today up at the valley, and he was asked his reaction. And also if he had spoken to John Elway about what he pages piece, at least of my worries are article, it's been worse things written about me. I'm assuming that's not my concern. My concern is the football team these coaches in. You know, we have a big game Monday night small concern was written. What's being said? I can't worry about that. That's not says to me it is it really is. Fair enough. You know, I try to get I try to acknowledge when Vance actually says something, correct? And I think that's the correct answer. Like was he supposed to say? Yeah. I was pissed off about it. And I went to John Elway. And I gave an ultimatum Siamese extension or fire me. I mean, what else is Vance Joseph supposed to say. But I gotta tell you to be in Vance's shoes right now all season is not you know, would be the stuff of nightmares. But to be in his shoes today. That's gotta be tough. I mean, I like I think that Vance Joseph is so over his head as a head coach. And I- formed this opinion rather early in his tenure? But nobody. Most of us can't even relate. But nobody would like the idea of a big story coming out saying your boss hates you. And he tried to replace you. That that'd be tough. So I give Vance Joseph a little bit of credit there for saying. Like there's worse things written about me. And he's probably right. There's actually no real knock on Vance Joseph other than John Elway didn't want him to be the head coach in two thousand eighteen. Now, there are reports and I'm gonna ask Woody this at the bottom of the hour. I there are reports that Mike Shanahan will not be considered for the head coaching job. Once Vance Joseph gets fired because he is once and for all just like just like Saturday was kind of the or Sunday, or whatever you whatever time frame you want us this weekend was the super official into the Broncos season. Eliminating them for playoff contention. It's the same way with Vance Joseph tenure as the head coach of the Broncos. It was over a long time ago. You know, I told you that I thought that he would have to either win out at this is after the bye week win out or make the playoffs knowing full well that he probably had to win out in order to make the playoffs. I said short of that. I don't think Vance Joseph is is back next year. And I saw other people report something similar mind was more of a gut feeling. There's was talking with inside sources because I give opinion and they do the reporting. Right. That's that's how this whole. Thing works. Make the world. Go round. So. Vance Joseph was done already. This this Browns lost just kind of was the final. I don't know because I said college Shanahan drew drove the final proverbial now. I don't know. What I what was but. We know that Vance Joseph going to be gone reportedly. I think Troy rank was the was the first one to say this to say that Mike Shanahan will not be among those considered for the next head coaching position of the Denver Broncos. And I said this last hour, I don't necessarily believe that Mike Shanahan is the best long-term option for the Denver Broncos. I don't even the my thing about what he pages piece was. You're telling me. I get Kirk cousins instead of. Case keenum, and I get literally any other human being besides Vance Joseph. Yes. I will take that trade and the Broncos will be better off for it. Now, the the most ideal scenario for me is John hires Mike Shanahan and Mike Shanahan tells Shanahan come OC for me for a year. And then I'll step away you become the head coach that like literally I will have a dream about that tonight. And I don't even like the Broncos. And that and that would be a dream of mine. Because I want what's better for you. Broncos fans. That's why it is. But the report from what he page was that Gary kubiak was considering being the OC in such a configuration, which again, we we, you know, we bag on Vance Joseph and for absolutely good reason. But you have to understand when I say vans. I am saying Vance and the coaching staff. Bill must grave Joe woods. I feel are in the same boat there. The three musketeers all for one one for all. And I think they're all terrible at their job. So it's not just Vance Joseph who's costing the Denver Broncos. It's Bill must grades play calling. It's Joe woods is lack of. Coaching acumen. But. Almost anything would be better than Vance. Joseph was this year for the Denver Broncos. It was nice that three game winning streak. It was fine. You know, we finally got to see here on Monday at back east bar and grill talk about victories talk about playoff hopes. But it was just. It was just a short diversion from what we all knew was coming. And that was what happened Saturday night another rookie quarterback. And that's maybe the most disappointing Tableau or picture from Saturday. Is that? A nother young quarterback a rookie quarterback goes into mile high. And wins. What it was what many people thighs the toughest place to play. You hear? Oh, it's so loud on third down and all that kind of stuff, and it just didn't even faze Baker Mayfield. You know, why didn't faze him? It's not because it wasn't loud. It's not because Broncos fans weren't going berserk because they always do whether this team sixteen in our Owen sixteen. It's that the team across from him posed no credible threat. There was that fifty eight guy in that fifty five guy and Baker Mayfield said I'll run away from those guys and also get the ball out too fast for them to get to me. And once you do that. The Broncos were what were they gonna do if Vaughn and Bradley Chubb couldn't get to him? Nobody was going to get to Baker Mayfield. And in the second half Baker Mayfield did what he wanted. And that should have been a reason why Vance Joseph goes forward on fourth and short knowing that Baker Mayfield was not going to go three and out because through the entire second half. He had been performing very well against the Broncos defense. But yet Vance Joseph quote, unquote, trusted, his defense and on the first play Nick Chubb runs like sixty yards. That's the most disappointing thing that a franchise that John Elway has famously dominated throughout the course of his career quarterback by a rookie. Coach by an interim coach this is kind of like the San Francisco game. There's all these reasons why the Broncos should not lose to the team. And yet they did. And it's just further cements. Vance Joseph legacy. You know as a worse record Vance Joseph for Josh mcdaniels fans Joseph two eight six zero zero four six coming up next. We'll get Sam farnsworth's Sam farnsworth's thoughts on Woody pages. Peace and also where the Broncos go from here. And then don't forget at the bottom of the hour Woody page from the Kazan round the Horne Woody page dot com. You know, he'll join me coming up at four thirty five. So keep it locked as the kids say to extra sports thirteen hundred. Here's an Xtra sports look at the streets. Eastbound you went to night twenty-five accident. "And up and cover so it'd be fun to watch and these things occur here denver much were used to some stability the position so i think it's interesting it'd be fun to see who who wins out we should note a few weeks head coach fence joseph told us earlier this morning and i don't mean to just throw this hatchet a see if you agree with him but he told us he doesn't wanna pick a quarterback this here and pick a different quarterback neck exchairman the goal would be to have that stability that you're talking about does that favour one guy over another in your mind i don't think so i think the best players going to get the job the best periods quarterback yeah i just think that's how it works mike shanahan told me something was your target was when he was trying to decide who to play not after john left good short while afterwards in and he said you know you can't trick the players players want to win we want to win the fans want us we you know that's that's our expectations and so the best guy is going to be there everybody's going to know what i think and that's who play talk about how you see the afc west brooke my heart my chargers we san diego and they they go up north you got the raiders that are moving in a couple of seasons kansas city has been you know in a lot of season pics to be a really strong team again after their ending the way the end of last year what do you see this division look same as last year toughened the charges a little bit better and and able to compete at the highest level i think we can too so i think it's it's it's sort of anybody's anybody's opportunity who's gonna step up and take it i think there'll be a lot of close games mlb a lot of you know different outcomes against different teams within the division and and uh it'll be close it'll be tough i think it's the toughest division in the nfl and uh let's hope we can come out on top that circle few things when it comes to management john elway signs on for another five years.
